Donner Summit
Truckee Donner Land Trust
The Truckee Donner Land Trust has acquired thousands of acres of land to preserve and protect scenic, historic and recreational land to be enjoyed by the public. Explore some of the areas on Donner Summit:
Royal Gorge
• LYLE’S LOOKOUT – a short 3-mile hike provides spectacular view of the iconic Devil’s Peak.
• ROWTON PEAK – a moderately strenuous 5-mile hike leads through several wildflower and bird areas, passes through some impressive volcanic geology, and offers expansive views of the Pacific Crest and the Granite Chief Wilderness.
• POINT MARIAH – a moderate 5-mile route with dramatic viewpoint down 4,000 feet into the Royal Gorge of the North Fork of the American River.
Donner Summit Canyon
The gateway to perhaps the most important square mile in California’s history. A trail up the canyon follows much of the old Dutch Flat/Donner Lake Wagon Road, which later served as the Lincoln Highway. Some of the historic features visible from the upper part of the trail include Native American petroglyphs, the China Wall, and the world’s first automobile underpass (1913). The moderately strenuous hike is approx. 6-miles round-trip with a 1,000’ elevation gain, uneven terrain and moderate to steep ascents.

Pacific Crest Trail
The Pacific Crest Trail (commonly abbreviated as the PCT) is a longdistance hiking and equestrian trail. It is a 2,663 mile long trail running from Mexico to Canada along the crest of the mountains in California, Oregon, and Washington. Explore sections of the Pacific Crest Trail on some of the hikes on Donner Summit:
• MT. JUDAH LOOP – a moderate 4.5 mile round trip loop accessed from Hwy. 40, east of Donner Ski Ranch, turn into the unpaved parking lot before the snow gate and begin the hike on the PCT heading south.
Paved Paths And Trails
Explore over 17 miles of scenic paved trails in Truckee, including:
• THE LEGACY TRAIL – 6.0 miles one way, this easy paved trail follows the river and provides scenic views. Great to walk, run or bike and it is cleared from snow in the winter. From downtown, head east on Brockway Road. Just past Palisades Drive stoplight, turn left into Truckee River Regional Park. The trail begins here or from East River Street downtown.
