The playground is located at Sohier Park, Ourimbah, on the corner of Ken Cook Way and Shirley St. “The playground has been four and a half years in the planning after Council made a resolution to construct it in November, 2008,” mayor Cr Eaton said. “Our staff have done

a fantastic job with the design and construction of the playground and I know that it has already proved extremely popular with local residents who have long called for a facility like this in the Ourimbah area. “Throughout the consultation phase, which involved 500 letters sent to residents, all responses received by Council were extremely favourable, including the direct consultation with the Ourimbah Precinct Committee and Ourimbah Neighbourhood Playgroup.

“I encourage everyone to get along and experience the playground first hand because it really is a state of the art facility with some wonderful equipment for the kids to enjoy.” The playground caters for children aged between two and 12 years and features a 25 metre long double flying fox, a 7.4 metre high net climbing structure, explorative dinosaur skeleton, regular play equipment such as swings, slide and spring toys, large shelter, bike racks and seating for the adults.

osford Council has agreed to write to the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) in relation to continuing negotiations for the purchase of land at Bambara Rd, Kariong.

Following the recent inclusion of one of the seven land parcels to the Brisbane Water National Park, council will request that the OEH again approach land owners to reopen discussions in an effort to ensure all lots can be secured for inclusion into the national park. Cr Gabby Bowles, who starred the Notice of Motion at council’s meeting of Tuesday, July 16, said the issue had been ongoing for a very long time. “We’ve actually started to hit some home runs and we’ve got some runs on the board now,” said Cr Bowles. Cr Hillary Morris said she wanted to make it known that council was committed to the purchase of the lots.

“The purchase of the lots on Bambara Rd has been a very long drawn out process but I think that it is important to keep negotiations going,” said Cr Morris. From the early 1980s, the properties located at Bambara Rd have been recognised for their potential to be included as part of Brisbane Water National Park, which surrounds the blocks on all sides. The properties contain a number of threatened species, threatened species habitat and significant recognised areas of Aboriginal Heritage. Council has supported the aim of acquiring the blocks for inclusion in Brisbane Water National

Park since 1998. In 2007 and 2008 the COSS Matrix was used to identify public and private land for possible inclusion in the Western extension of COSS. On July 1, 2008, Council decided to include the seven parcels of land along Bambara Rd as part of Western COSS and, in accordance with Council’s resolution, the properties identified for voluntary acquisition were encoded with a 149-certificate message. Since that time council, in partnership with the OEH, have worked to negotiate the voluntary acquisition of the seven lots at Bambara Rd.

Last June, lot 2501 with an area of 18.5 hectares was successfully purchased and has in recent weeks been transferred to become part of Brisbane Water National Park. “While the negotiations for the remaining lots at Bambara Rad have to date been unsuccessful, and though council acknowledges the primary role of the OEH in the negotiating process, I feel it is important for Council to show its continued support for voluntary acquisition of the remaining six lots at Bambara Rd, Kariong,” said Cr Bowles. Wallarah Two or any other coal mine in the area. Formerly a Labor MP, Mr Thomson is now running as an Independent candidate for Dobell in this year’s federal election. Mr Thomson said he has been fighting the coal mine for several years. The mine was an issue at the 2007 and 2010 elections. “Now the mining company, Kores, is out in the community telling people its mine is virtually a rubber stamp away from proceeding. “I have called on both the prime minister and opposition leader to support my private member’s bill which will prevent coal export from our water catchment, effectively stopping the mine.” Mr Thomson said the people of the Central Coast will be able to express their opposition to the mine at the election. “This is a huge camp with many countries attending and the top 40 American students,” said Jayden’s mum Stacey. In January this year Jayden was a member of the NSW Waratahs U18 Country Basketball team that won the Australian Country Basketball Cup at Albury. From this tournament he was selected as captain of the NSW Country team to

compete at the Australian U18 championships in Queensland in April. “Jayden is classed as bottom age and is still eligible to play in the same age group next year,” said Ms Hodgson. “He is the only student from his school ever to make NSW Combined Open basketball team which won the All School State Championships. “Jayden has another two years at making this team again as it is an open team with students up to and including Year 12.” As a result of Jayden’s performance in last year’s U16 Nationals he was selected in a 20 man Australian squad to train for the World U17 Basketball Championships in 2014. The squad has had three camps at the Australian

Institute of Sport (AIS) where players have been dropped and others added. “He has just received notice that he is invited back to the AIS in August as part of the final 16 man squad,” said Ms Hodgson. A team of 10 will be picked from this camp to play in the Oceania Series against New Zealand in Melbourne where the winning country will represent Oceania in the 2014 U17 World Basketball Championships in Dubai in June next year. Jayden has also been part of an Australian squad that attended the Asia Nike Basketball camp in China. “Jayden is working so very hard to hold his position in these squads and teams as your performance is regularly tested,” said Ms Hodgson.

The partnership agreement aims to provide Gosford City exposure at a national and international level and focuses on a range of community benefits including youth, recreational and sporting development opportunities, increased tourism and visitor attraction to the region. Council sponsored the Central Coast Mariners between 2008 and 2011 in conjunction with Wyong Council, Business Central

Coast and the Department of State and Regional Development for a total of approximately $440,000. Council concluded its sponsorship of the club following the 2010-2011 season. While the joint sponsorship of the Mariners was successful, Council had resolved to investigate opportunities to sponsor other regional activities, projects and joint ventures in the marketing of Gosford City. The Central Coast Mariners have built a reputation as the most consistent team in the national competition’s history, as four time grand finalists, two time premiers and 2013 Hyundai A-League Champions. Following their success, the Central Coast Mariners reapproached Gosford

Council with the opportunity to become a sleeve sponsor for the next three seasons commencing this year. The partnership will provide Gosford Council with exposure at a national level through the Hyundai A-League competition and at an international level through the Asian Champions League (ACL). Four ACL games were held in Gosford against competing teams from March to May and drew crowds of up to 8,000 people, accompanied by large visiting delegations from overseas supporting their respective teams. The funding of $120,000 per year for three seasons, totalling $360,000, will be sourced from Council’s To u r i s m - B u s i n e s s Development Special Levy.

he Youth in P e r f o r m i n g Arts (YIPA) 2013 presentation night was held on Friday, June 28, at Laycock St Theatre, signaling the final segment of the 2013 YIPA year. The presentation night provided an opportunity for some of the best young talent on the Central Coast to be recognised for their participation in YIPA, with 12 performers receiving awards. Claire Sheather, Alicia Brock, Daisy-SherwoodMiller, Tyson Almond and Olivia Corkery received scholarships while Dylan

Pollard, Luke Mahler, Jessica Hughes, Hayley Nobbs, Matthew Fadhul, Lily Kidd and Claire Billson received encouragement awards. After receiving their individual YIPA awards, each of the young performers were asked to perform an item for the audience. Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna and general manager Mr Paul Anderson were on hand to assist with the presentation of a number of awards. Australian country singer Gina Jeffreys and her husband Rod McCormack were also in attendance as scholarship providers.

“YIPA is very appreciative of the support we get from a variety of local businesses and individuals who make these awards possible,” said YIPA spokesperson Mr Gary Jackson. “These awards are aimed at providing assistance to the young talents of the Central Coast to develop their performance skills. “Now that YIPA 2013 is complete, the YIPA committee will take a short break before starting to prepare for the next YIPA concert series which will commence in late May of 2014,” Mr Jackson said.

The production began on Wednesday, August 7, at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst and will run until Saturday, August 24. After starting his career working with local theatre groups including Gosford Musical Society and Mad Cow Theatre Company, Craig graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004 and since then has worked continuously as an actor, comedian and broadcaster. For Melbourne Theatre Company, Craig has performed in The History Boys, The Glass Soldier, Don Juan in Soho and for MTC-Company B, The Man From Mukinupin. For television, Craig has appeared on Blue Heelers,

Newstopia, Satisfaction, Dead Gorgeous and was the face of Boost Juice Bars and Open Universities nationally. For many years Craig also performed in the double act Stefan and Craig, whose radio show aired on Triple M and their television series Stefan and Craig: Slightly Live was

nominated for a Logie. From 2010 to 2012, Craig hosted the SAFM breakfast show in Adelaide and, after a recent move back to the Central Coast, can be heard each morning on the Star 104.5 breakfast show, Craig and Mandy. Free breakfast for young people in Bateau Bay Jamie McKenzie, Regional Youth Support Services Inc

T

he 2261 Breakfast Club (Breakky Club) is a brand new Regional Youth Support Services Inc project that began in Bateau Bay on Wednesday, July 17. The project, which is funded by the State Government’s youth opportunities funding, is a new partnership with Samaritans at The Cottage in Deborah Anne Dr, Bateau Bay. Developed by people aged between 12 and 18 years, the Breakky Club is aimed at improving young people’s access to community facilities, services and events, health and nutrition and improved school attendance. It also promotes young people mentoring their peers, imparting practical skills such as decision making, problem

solving and high level communication. “This Breakfast Club will allow young people to attend school after having a healthy breakfast, which studies have shown is vital for young people and their education,” said Regional Support Services Inc Youth Opportunities team leader Mr Jamie McKenzie. As a 10 week trial which commenced on July 17, the Breakky Club has already started developing links within the community, with cereal donated from Kellogg’s and Not Just Cakes bakery donating breads and treats. Breakky Club leader Ms Bianca Lawther said that being in the heart of a condensed housing area in Bateau Bay West, the aim was to provide young people with a nutritional start to the day. “We also want to lift the community spirit,

encouraging volunteers to help out,” Ms Lawther said. Mr McKenzie said projects such as this had the potential to change young people’s lives for the better. He also said the program linked in with training and further education, as well as employment opportunities. “[It is] a social outlet, a way to voice concerns and to have fun,” Mr McKenzie said. Breakky Club runs from 6:45am until 8am every Wednesday morning of term three at The Cottage for young people aged between 12 and 18. Breakfast is free, with toasts, spreads, cereals and fruit available. Young people can also make a sandwich to take with them before they leave.

While enjoying the artwork, people were able to sample wines from the Rutherglen Estates Winery. The Bays Community Group also provided a wide selection of cheeses, pates and other treats to round off the experience. Each artist donated a piece of work which was offered for sale in the auction. Paid announcement, Authorised and written by Edward James 323 West Street Umina Beach NSW 2257 phone 0243419140

EDWARD JAMES IS REVISITING OLD AND SADLY UNRESOLVED POLITICAL ISSUES OF COMPLIANCE ! P14 - GRANDSTAND - September 6, 2012 Paid Announcement

Our local councils are to blame for permitting abuse of due process which happens every election time.

I

t seems Gosford City Council compliance officers and rangers are unable to act on illegally placed political signs unless or until someone makes a formal complaint. Most ratepayers won’t know, but I will tell you that about eight or ten years ago, Gosford City Council advised me that in the future, all of my approaches to council, council officers and councillors would be re-directed to the attention of the public officer to deal with. By doing so, Council has arbitrarily interfered with my engaging with my elected representatives. Those Councilors whom I have asked all deny that they asked council to do that. I think it is more than wrong, but I know better than to take a political argument into a court of law. From that time, I have been paying rates to a corrupt council while not being represented. I understand that there are other ratepayers whose approaches to their elected representatives are, according to them, also being blocked. Where Gosford City Council’s abuse of power falls down is that some complaints made about the problems with the Old Pacfic Highway above Piles Creek were lost, because Council did not keep proper records as the law requires. Had they done so and the “rejected” complaints attended to, five lives may have not been lost. How many records were not kept according to law? Would you believe, eight hundred thousand items were not properly registered/logged into DATA works?

My Dear Readers, Here are a few words about why I took up making paid announcements. My elected representatives point blank refuse to do the jobs they are elected to do! Then, some of them lied to us. Right now, there are politicians trying to hold on to power for power’s sake. The Labor party needs Labor councillors to hold power in local councils like Gosford so they will have something or some councillors to help Labor nationally claw its way back to the top. Labor have certainly not learnt their lesson yet. We know this because they have never conducted a legitimate election campaign without campaign material popping up illegally on poles all over the place. The way I am now is a result of my standing up and decrying systemic corruption and abuse of power accommodated by political allsorts and their supporters. The sort of abuse used to disenfranchise my elderly father and hound him into his grave. People in his community who knew him, told me he was a good man who manufactured and installed excellent TV antennas. When I stood up in 2000, I was in a better position to see and hook up with the many others in a wider community who are not well represented, not just locally, but in many other local councils and at State and Federal levels of government. It took a very long while to understand our political allsorts. They are a very small minority with not too much self-control. For example, I have asked Labor party members what they would do to change the toxic reputation the Labor party has attracted because of the shonks within the ranks from the top down. The rank and file members have no answer to offer me, apart from an uncertain, “we do not get involved in that”, or, "I don't see a problem". The reward I will take away with me when I go is with me because I made an effort to bring about change in my community. That change is within reach if my readers make the effort on Saturday to number five boxes below the line in order of their preference for their formal vote. Keep in mind that when you all start exercising your votes below the line, you will be on the way towards honest representative government. Stay below the line! Do not let others exercise YOUR VOTE! Fast food restaurants rally to raise funds Nerissa Magee, Brilliant Logic

M

c D o n a l d s Restaurants from across the Central Coast rallied together on Friday, July 26, hosting their annual fundraising dinner for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which runs the new Family Room at Gosford Hospital. This year, locals and business owners again dug deep with almost $50,000 raised on the evening. McDonald’s Central Coast licensee Mr Ron Mussalli said: “Having a sick child or family member is such a difficult time for families.” “This event aims to support those families who have been dealt the unfortunate card and raise much needed funds for the Gosford Hospital Family Room. “Much of the success of the night has to go to our exceptional auctioneer, Tim Andrews principal/

licensee of LJ Hooker Terrigal, who volunteered his time. “Tim’s expert skills and ability in running a successful auction were invaluable, rallying guests and sharing his enthusiasm for this worthwhile cause – all of which resulted in another excellent outcome for the Family Room. “Thanks to the generosity of everyone associated with this event, The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Gosford Hospital will be able to continue offering its support in making the journey to recovery as easy as possible for families. “The room allows families to have a break from the children’s ward and offers some level of normality in their lives, even through simple things like watching movies or colouring in together when a child’s condition does not permit them to be at home.

“I believe this sort of service is crucial and encourages healing both for the child and their family,” said Mr Mussalli. The event, which was held at the Reef Restaurant in Terrigal, was sponsored by Star 104.5 FM and featured an appearance from Ronald McDonald himself. Along with a live auction and raffle, guests also had the opportunity to purchase a brick for $1,000 to be displayed on the wall inside the family room with the plaque identifying the contributor or family. “We are indebted to those who have given so generously to the Ronald McDonald House Charities and recognise that without this outpouring of support, services such as the Gosford Hospital Family Room would not be able to continue their fantastic work,” concluded Mr Mussalli.

of the evening. She paid tribute to the strong community support which she said has been instrumental in helping to provide support for the Welfare Fund. “We all want our young people to benefit from the wonderful opportunities that are on offer in our communities and there is no reason why they shouldn’t receive all the encouragement we can provide for them to get out and experience the satisfaction which can be derived from being part of a team with their mates,” said Ms Doak-Stride. “We see this fund as being one which provides a financial platform for these opportunities. Ms Doak-Stride also praised Lachie Turner’s ongoing support of the junior rugby movement in the Woy Woy region and mentioned, in particular, how willingly such special support had been forthcoming.

“A shining example of this, for instance, was highlighted when the popular Wallaby star acted as a trainer and water boy for the successful Woy Woy under-13s during last year’s Grand Final at Bluetongue Stadium,” said Mr Wilson. “There was a special moment during the fundraising evening when several members of that under-13 team presented Lachie with a Woy Woy Juniors jersey with the word ‘Trainer’ emblazoned across the back. “The gesture brought roars of approval from the large gathering,” said Mr Wilson. Fundraising benefactors included McLeish Wines, Edwards Butchery, the Killcare General Store, Gittoes Real Estate and Godfrey and Susan Franz, who provided holiday accommodation at a luxury unit in Killcare.

Feet in the Dirt to help support Street Smart Stuart Cork, Woy Woy School of Music

W

oy Woy School of Music teacher Cat Cork has released his new album titled ‘Feet in the Dirt’. The album, which features lyrics dealing with depression, hopelessness and bittersweet moments of happiness, is now available on iTunes. For each copy sold, $1 will be donated to Street Smart Australia. Street Smart Australia raises funds and awareness for grass roots projects which support the homeless and those at risk of homelessness. To date, they have raised over $2.4 million for 646 projects. “Street Smart uses 100 per cent of donations to support community projects that are unable to raise funding themselves,” Mr Cork said. “For example, a women’s refuge needed a washing machine to

provide clean linen. “The volunteers at the refuge weren’t able to raise the necessary funds so Street Smart stepped in. “I am very impressed with the direct and sensible approach taken by Street Smart and am proud to do what I can to support them.” Mr Cork previously worked as a lawyer and often helped people who

were facing bankruptcy and the loss of their home or business. He retired from practice 18 months ago and relocated to the Central Coast. “The Woy Woy School of Music has been incredibly supportive to me,” Mr Cork said. “There is a real sense of community spirit there.”

Unidentified creature still a mystery

Riverside Office Tower to open soon F

A

n unidentified creature that washed up on Wamberal beach on Tuesday, June 25, is currently being studied by Quarantine in an attempt to identify it. The giant rat-like creature was examined by local environmental activist Mr Jake Cassar and has been described as similar to a brush tailed possum. Mr Cassar said he wasn’t sure it was a brush tailed possum, as it was “a little bit different”. “It has a very elongated skull, very, very long ears, very sharp teeth, much like a rodent and very humanlike hands and a long tail. ‘It is a very powerful, large creature. “I would love to think it’s something unusual or not

known, but I’m just really not sure. “There are many different views out there, but whatever happens, I have had a heap of fun and this thing has captured the attention and imagination of thousands,” said Jake. An answer from Quarantine was expected to be received on Monday, July 1, however, it was not available at the time Coast Community News went to press.

inal preparations are being made as Riverside Park gets ready to unveil its latest development on Friday, August 9.

The four-storey tower will become home to the new Reliance GP Super Clinic. “The Riverside Office Tower currently paves the way for a greener future with optimum energy efficiency and guaranteed savings in light and power,” said Riverside Park proprietor Mr Matthew Gibbens.

New weed endangers threatened species new exotic weed has been discovered on Saratoga Island Nature Reserve in Brisbane Water near Davistown.

The invasive weed known as Sicilian Sea Lavender (Limonium hyblaeum) has been known to displace native species in both South Australia and Victoria, but this is the first time it has been found invading natural environments on the Central Coast. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) acting regional manager, Mr Alan Henderson said that the weed was invading the important saltmarsh vegetation communities on the island. “The weed is displacing native plant species and it can lead to the loss of biodiversity and impact on these fragile and important communities. “Sea lavender is used in cultivated gardens, but

Prime Minister in Kariong to reaffi firm F3 upgrade P

rime Minister Julia Gillard joined Federal al Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and Member for Robertson Ms Deb O’Neill in Kariong on Friday, May 24, to reaffirm reaffi firm Federal Labor’s $600 million plan to ease congestion and cut travel times along the F3.

The corridor is used by some 75,000 cars and 7,000 trucks a day, with freight volumes predicted to nearly double within the next two decades. The centrepiece of Federal Labor’s plan is $405 million to bring forward the construction of the “missing link” between the F3 and M2. As well as delivering smoother, quicker driving conditions, this new 7.7km dual two lane road tunnel beneath Pennant Hills Rd would also greatly reduce traffic congestion through Sydney’s northern suburbs. The project will be

delivered in partnership with the NSW Government, which will provide the same amount of upfront funding. The balance of the required funding will come from the private sector, with the project expected to go to market within months. In addition to making the F3 to M2 Link a reality, Federal Labor’s plan also funds targeted improvements to tackle congestion and improve safety along the existing F3, including widening the section between Tuggerah and Doyalson, widening the section between Kariong and Somersby, upgrading

the Kariong Interchange and upgrading the Weakleys Dr ntersection. intersection. The staged delivery of these projects could begin as soon as next year and will be jointly funded by the Federal and NSW governments, with each contributing $195.8 million. Minister for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Mr Chris Hartcher said the intersection upgrade funded by the NSW Government would benefit motorists by improving safety, reducing delays and lessening congestion. “This key intersection provides a major road link

between suburbs of the Central Coast and the F3 to Newcastle and Sydney,” Mr Hartcher said. “Importantly the upgraded intersection improves safety for motorists and cyclists by separating traffic movements and minimising merges. “The upgrade has

extended the existing right turn lane and provided a second right turn lane from the Central Coast Highway into Wisemans Ferry Rd. “And in another benefit to road users, the intersection has opened two months ahead of schedule.” Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein said work on

the intersection upgrade commenced in June last year and was carried out by Roads and Maritime Services. “Minor finishing work including improved street lighting, building shared paths, final line marking and median upgrades is expected to be completed in late July,” Mr Holstein said. “Traffic control and reduced speed limits will

be in place where needed to ensure the safety of workers, motorists and other road users.” Further features of the upgrade included an additional left turn lane from Wisemans Ferry Rd into the Central Coast Highway controlled by traffic lights, a continuous lane on Wisemans Ferry Rd for southbound vehicles exiting F3, removing the need to merge, a right turn

bay from Wisemans Ferry Rd onto the northbound on ramp of the F3 to separate traffic and an off road cycle path. “I thank motorists and nearby residents for their ongoing patience throughout the upgrade and while this essential finishing work is carried out,” Mr Holstein said. This will involve hand removal of the weed species and include measures to prevent the weed spreading or recolonising. its escape into natural bushland is devastating to environment and it has now become an invasive weed causing problems on the island,” Mr Henderson said. Coastal saltmarsh is listed under the Threatened Species Conservation Act as an endangered ecological community and provides important habitat for marine and terrestrial animals such as crabs, molluscs, insects and spiders. Fish species also use the area during tidal flooding and many migratory wading birds use the areas for roosting and feeding. “Our priority is to rid the island of this weed to help the saltmarsh areas recover and ensure this important habitat is maintained for native species of the Central

A report will come back to Council outlining options for alternative sites for a resource recovery facility, options for the gradual rehabilitation of the site and the ownership of the land and adjacent parcels. Council will explore a number of alternatives for the use of this site, now and into the future, balancing the financial impact of resource recovery activities and ensuring the environmental concerns of residents are addressed. The quarry was initially purchased by Council in 1997 and operated as a sandstone quarry supplying materials for some of Council’s road works. More recently, Council lodged a planning proposal for a Resource Recovery Facility on the site which caused wide spread community disquiet.

Cr Ward echoed Cr Morris’s views and said he didn’t understand why the quarry had to be located in a residential area. “It was very isolated in 1971, it is now very built up,” said Cr Ward. yong Council has recommended the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) approve a $16.8 million application for a new Ausgrid works depot to be constructed at Ourimbah.

Council is unable to completely sign off on the development because the value is more than $5 million, which means the JRPP will ultimately determine the application. Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said the development would serve as Ausgrid’s base for the entire Central Coast. “The development will

be home to 288 full time staff and be in operation seven days a week, and 24 hours a day during times of emergency such as a natural disaster,” Cr Eaton said. The site covers 3.9 hectares and is on the corner of Ourimbah Creek Rd and the Pacific Highway, on the F3 side. It has frontages on

We

both the Pacific Highway and Ourimbah Creek Rd. The application describes the proposed development as a regional works depot, comprising a total floor area of more than 8,300 square metres. There are four main buildings proposed including an administration facility with a conference

room, service facilities including showers and lockers for field staff, a vehicle servicing area with a wash bay, warehousing and storage and a recycling and waste collection facility. Car parking spaces have been provided for 188 general spots and 215 service vehicle spots. The administration building will be located on the most prominent area of the site, at the front of Ourimbah

Creek Rd and the Pacific Highway, while the site will be secured by a three metre fence. “The 288 jobs will be broken down into 74 office staff and the rest being field staff,” Cr Eaton said. “This again proves that council is working hard to attract this type of job creating investment to the Shire. “To have the regional base for Ausgrid located at Ourimbah is fantastic

news for the Shire, and for employees and job seekers. “Council has overwhelmingly supported this development and recommended it for approval by the JRPP. “We will continue to work hard to create jobs for our residents, and bring this type of million dollar investment into the Shire.” Media release, 27 Jun 2013, Wyong Shire Council

The Central Coast

The initiative has taken its first step towards becoming reality, with council endorsing a Preliminary Project Plan which will develop a masterplan for the Council-owned land at Warnervale. “This is a unique opportunity for council and the community,” Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said. Cr Eaton also said the initiative would benefit the young people of the Central Coast and create a huge boost for local employment and business. According to Cr Greg Best, the initiative would particularly benefit those who have to leave the Central Coast because their chosen disciplines of tertiary study are not available in the region. “We are not going to be an exporter of commuters,” Cr Best said. “One day, we are going to be an importer of employers.” Council has drawn on

successful international education-focused development, such as Education City in SouthEast Queensland and the Education City in Qatar, and envisions creating a regionally significant integrated development. Key components of

We

the development would include a university campus for 7,000 students with an emphasis on science, engineering and technology based studies, a residential college for 1,500 students and retail, sport and recreation and language facilities for

students. It would also see the co-alignment of education with training providers and businessindustry groups, as well as the establishment of a business/industrial park which would integrate with the university campus and explore linkages for employment generation and research and development.

It is envisaged the development would employ 1,500 staff plus support services and retail providers. On a recent delegation to China, Cr Eaton visited the largest university city in the world in Wuhan, home to multiple university campuses and a total student population of over one million. “It was incredible to

see how this satellite city is thriving with the energy of all those students and how this flows on to stimulate the local economy,” Cr Eaton said. “The spin offs extend to the tourism sector, with increased visits from the families of students and prospective students and university-based events.” The initial driver for investment in the proposed Warnervale precinct will focus on securing a university to anchor the development and attract complementary service providers and businesses. “On this front, we are already looking good with council having already received an expression of interest from a reputable international investor, which I think demonstrates that this is a viable project,” Cr Eaton said. “I’m very optimistic that we have the right conditions to transform higher education on the Central Coast.” An economic feasibility study will be completed by September 2013. Proposed upgrade of the Pacific Highway and Wyong Road Intersection

A

$120 million funding deal for the upgrade of Wyong Rd has been secured.

The deal was made between Member for The Entrance Mr Chris Spence, Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber, NSW Treasurer Mr Mike Baird and Minister for Roads Mr Duncan Gay. “During the election campaign, we gave a commitment of $8 million to deliver interval lights at the roundabouts

at Pacific Highway, Enterprise Dr, Mingara Dr and Tumbi Umbi,” Mr Spence said. “Following the election, through discussions with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), it became clear we would need much more than this stop-gap solution and instead needed to completely remove all

We

four roundabouts. “Darren Webber and I are immensely pleased with the great news from the NSW Treasurer that the figure of over $120 million needed to completely overhaul these intersections on Wyong Rd will be delivered. “This year, $4 million was allocated in the budget for the Pacific

Highway intersection and we’re another step closer to getting underway with the environmental planning approval in place and the submissions report published,” said Mr Spence. Mr Webber said: “Some of the most common issues raised in submissions included impacts to properties, landscaping and urban design, pedestrian and cycle facilities, noise and vibration and potential overshadowing of

properties near the new intersection.” “As a result, the RMS has now made modifications to their design.” A further $1.6 million allocated this year will see further progress planning for Enterprise Dr, Mingara Dr and Tumbi Umbi underway. “It is likely that construction on the intersections at Mingara Dr and Tumbi Umbi will be undertaken as combined works, with

construction funding to be allocated in the 2014-15 budget,” Mr Spence said. “Wyong Rd is a major link from the F3 to Wyong, Tuggerah and surrounding coastal suburbs which makes this upgrade a priority and a key part of the O’Farrell Government’s commitment to improving traffic flow in the area.” Media release, 22 Jul 2013 Jim Lloyd, Office of Darren Webber MP

Elvis to perform at Kincumber again

Rob Grant, Gosford Uniting Church

A

Meet the Candidates forum was held on Monday, July 29, at Gosford Uniting Church which saw 170 people listen to the views of four local candidates from Robertson and Dobell. The Robertson candidates comprised Kate da Costa (Greens), Lucy Wicks (Liberal) and Deborah O’Neill (Labor), while the one Dobell candidate was Sue Wynn (Greens). Liberal candidate Karen McNamara sent an apology due to a prior commitment and the Labor candidate remains uncertain.

“The meeting was chaired by the Minister of the Gosford Uniting Church Rev. Greg Woolnough who guided the meeting with skill and wit resulting in a very happy and acceptable exchange of ideas,” said Forum Promotions Committee representative Mr Robert Grant. “He commented on the fact that all the candidates were women, which received an encouraging response from those attending. “People were able to ask questions of the candidates and opportunity was given later, over a cup of tea, to speak personally with them.

“As well, tables had been set up, in the church hall, by interested groups, including the Democratic Labor Party and the Palmer Party, with helpful information. “This was probably the first Forum of this nature held in conjunction with the forthcoming election. “Comments received afterwards expressed appreciation for this opportunity to see, meet, hear and ask questions of the candidates. “The public following and support for these forums is increasing, which is most encouraging,” said Mr Grant.

Gospel Gardens in Umina, has been featured on Triple J Unearthed. Bonnie, who has been playing guitar for two years, piano for seven years and singing since she was little, said she “gets so inspired” when seeing artists play live. She said her song lyrics are usually poetry that she has written. “Every day my knowledge of guitar and piano are extending and my love for music grows,” said Bonnie. Bonnie’s original song

‘Draping Trees’ has received rave reviews on Triple J Unearthed in the ‘High’ section. The Gospel Garden Sanctuary has been available twice a week for almost two years for spontaneous music expression sessions.

AFL

Round 18 to be a preview of finals

Killarney Vale to host Heritage Round in last home game Garry Burkinshaw, Black Diamond AFL

Garry Burkinshaw, Black Diamond AFL

he Killarney Vale Australian Football Club will host its Heritage Round against Cardiff in what will be their last home game of the season on Saturday, August 10.

T

The match will double as the club’s official 35th Anniversary celebration and Past Players Day. The Premier Division Team will wear the clubs inaugural playing strip as a tribute to the club’s history. As match day sponsors, Bankwest will feature on the clubs guernseys alongside major sponsors Westfield and Hero Sushi. After the dust settles from the game day action, spectators are encouraged to stay at the club rooms to share stories with past and present players. All in attendance will also have the opportunity to take a piece of the history home with them at special post match auction. Football was first played on the Central Coast in 1971 when a club at Gosford competed in the Newcastle League.

Five years later the Central Coast Football League was formed comprising five clubs; only one of those in the Wyong Shire. It wasn’t until 1978 that sufficient interest was garnered to establish another, Killarney Vale, wearing a three coloured panel jumper of red, black and yellow. They were initially known as the Bunyips, the same motif of the CBA Bank who sponsored the jumpers. They started with one open age team and half way through the year, like other clubs, an U17 side. In 1979 they also filled a reserve grade plus an U15 team. The club played their home games at Don Small Oval. 1980 was the club’s first senior grand final which they lost but were successful in the following two seasons winning back to back flags in 1981-82. It was in 1982 that the club changed its colours to red and black, discarding their inane logo in favour of the Bombers. By this stage the club had ensconced themselves

at Adelaide St, constructing clubrooms, realigning the ground and funding the construction of a scoreboard and effective field lighting. They missed the flag by a small margin in 1983 but the club had grown to one of the strongest on the north coast of NSW fielding sides in all grades and conducting a four team U9 competition at Adelaide St of a Saturday Morning. The league was struggling so it was decided that three of the clubs which were fielding first and reserve, enter one open-age side only and a further openage team under another name. Killarney Vale chose Bateau Bay for the second side. After finishing runner up in 1985, the first grade won two further flags in 198687, the former undefeated premiers where they also produced the league medal winner and leading goalkicker, Mick Smith, who booted 232 goals. An additional two storey clubroom incorporating a canteen was constructed in 1986.

ound 18 of the Black Diamond AFL Cup competition on Saturday, August 10, will see a preview of the first week of the finals.

At No 1 Sportsground, league heavyweights, Newcastle City and Terrigal Avoca clash with the winner favourite to take out the minor premiership. These two teams have met twice this year, for one win apiece, albeit both have been played on the Central Coast. Terrigal Avoca will enter the game on the back of a bye, while Newcastle City suffered a one point loss to Cardiff, a similar fate suffered by the Panthers in Round 15. Terrigal Avoca are missing their coach, Chris Bishop, who will not be available for the rest of the year while midfielder Jay Lewis will also be missing due to a one game suspension. Newcastle City big man Jacob Dawes is again expected to be required by the Sydney Swans reserves and representative defender

Andrew Wilmott is still at least one game away from returning. Given the evenness of the teams, the one who makes the most of their opportunities is likely to get the points. This is an area that has let City down this year with their scoring accuracy running at just 49%, against a Terrigal Avoca defence which is averaging a league low of just 40 points per game, they will need to look to convert most of their scoring chances. At Adelaide St Oval, Killarney Vale will celebrate their 35th anniversary when they host Cardiff. With both teams wrapping up a finals berth in round 17, the pressure will be off somewhat. However, with both teams to meet again in the first Semi Final in a fortnight, each will be looking to gain psychological advantage. These two teams have only met once this year with Cardiff getting the points, however, not much can be taken from this result as it was played in terrible conditions.

Cardiff have been the form side of the competition of late putting together five wins in a row, including wins over both Terrigal Avoca and Newcastle City. Killarney Vale on the other hand are in solid form and also recorded a win over Newcastle City in Round 13 and enter the match on the back of a dour win over Warners Bay in round 17. In the final match, only pride will on the line when Warners Bay host Singleton at Feighan Oval. In First Division, all eyes will be on the clash between Wyong Lakes and Maitland at Don Small Oval. Maitland appeared to have a spot on the finals sewn up, however, four consecutive losses has left the door ajar for Wyong Lakes to grab an unlikely finals opportunity. Should Maitland win they will wrap up the finals spot, while a Magpies win would draw them level with Maitland, and take the final finals berth to the last round.

Ms Black has been a lifeguard for the past nine years and runs council’s lifeguard service based operations. The event is considered the most prestigious on the world paddleboard racing circuit and requires competitors to paddle a distance of 51.2 km between the two Hawaiian islands. The Toowoon Bay based lifeguard completed the gruelling course in five hours, 40 minutes and 40 seconds to win the open women’s division in difficult conditions. “I knew about an hour into the race that we weren’t going to be breaking any records,” said Ms Black, a former NSW surfing champion. “I thought ‘I’m just racing these girls and I need to make the most out of every bump’…but it was really tough.” Wyong Council’s Will

Anido also won the O40 division of the competition in Hawaii. Mr Anido has been a Wyong Council lifeguard since 1990 and is also based at Toowoon Bay. He finished third in last year’s event. “The successes of Terrene and Will in this prestigious event is a testament to the overall fitness and skills of council’s lifeguards,” council’s natural areas operations manager Mr Luke Sulkowski said. “It recognises the abilities of our lifeguards as elite watermen and women. “This is one of the reasons why the Wyong Shire Council lifeguard service has demonstrated the best safety record in Australia with no lives lost within two kilometres of line of sight of a flagged area. “The results of Terrene and Will build on other achievements earlier in the year where Soldiers Beach lifeguard Stuart Sohier was recognised as the National Professional Ocean Lifeguard of the Year and his Soldiers Beach co-lifeguard Scott Higgins was crowned National Professional Lifeguard Mission Champion.”

Competitors from 24 clubs competed in events such as obstacle swims, manikin carries, line throws, medley relays and a simulated emergency response competition.

With the largest team in the competition, Terrigal dominated the Championships, achieving an overall point score of 487.5. Strong performances were delivered by Keelan Bridge, Rachelle King, Tim Schofield, Tom Simpson, Alessandra and Elyssia Gasparotto, Corey Fletcher, Savannah Wheeler, Lucy Hayes and Paul Lemmon. Local club Umina finished in fourth position with an overall point score of 126,

and strong performances from Claire Gaffney, Rachel Wood, Jemma Smith, Jasmine Darwin and Bronte Smith. Surf Life Saving NSW head coach Jeff Mowbray said he was hugely impressed with the growth of the event. “It was so great to see the development of this event and so many younger kids competing,” Mr Mowbray said. “Pool Rescue gives athletes who prefer

swimming over other disciplines a greater opportunity to participate in Surf Life Saving Competition.” Competitors under 18 also had the chance to be selected to travel to New Zealand as part of a NSW Development Team for the National Championships in October. The squad is yet to be announced.

Toukley Tennis Centre upgrade complete Wyong Shire Council

yong Council has recently completed a $60,000 upgrade to the tennis centre at Toukley in order to improve access to low cost recreation facilities for the community.

W

The upgrades at the centre, which has been operating for 38 years, include re-surfacing two synthetic grass courts and re-fencing the surrounds of the facility. Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said council remained focused on developing opportunities for the community to participate

in sport and recreation by improving local facilities, programs and services. “These works will help keep the facility’s maintenance costs at a minimum, ensuring fees to play tennis remain affordable for our community,” Cr Eaton said. “We are committed to continue working with groups like Toukley Tennis Club to provide excellent sports facilities for locals.” Tennis coach Mr Allan McDonald, a long standing representative of the club, said he was delighted with the outcome. “Council has done a great job executing this project

and the end results are just fantastic,” Mr McDonald said. “Already we have more people using the courts and have had an increase in enquiries about coaching. “It’s a real credit to council and highlights what a great job they’ve done when we hear people talking about how good the courts look.” Toukley Tennis Club is now planning to apply for additional funding to improve the two asphalt court surfaces at the facility. Twenty-three teams from across the Central Coast participated in the new initiative which was designed to encourage participation in netball. “It was a very cold and windy day but the spirit of all competitors was high,” said Umina Public School netball

coordinator Ms Rebecca Rodwell. “Students could be found chatting to new friends, making up chants, learning the rules for some and creating set plays ready to take on their opponents. “The Umina teams, Mulloka and Ukamirra, did their very best each time they took the court. “Lots of positive encouragement could be heard from the sideline. “We had several players that had only played a

P9 - GRANDSTAND - August 8, 2013

Lee Trethowan, Matthew Watts and Miro Perovic are all Coast singles champions Bob Bourke, Bowls Central Coast

u r i m b a h Lisarow RSL Bowling Club was the host venue for the running of the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Singles Championships held on Saturday, July 27.

O

After 33 ends of bowling it was Bruce Jewell of Terrigal that prevailed over Ettalong’s Lee Trethowan in the Major Singles Final. Lee had defeated World Champion Aron Sherriff in the quarter-finals. With Bowls Central Coast president Max LeGuier doing the honours as marker, it was Bruce who jumped out of the blocks and won the first two ends for three shots. Lee replied with a four on end three to take a shortlived I-shot lead as Bruce answered with two shots on the next end to also gain a one shot lead, and again for only one end, as Lee

levelled the score 5-5 on end five. This set the pattern all the way to the 28th end as the lead swapped hands and the score was levelled six times. Lee put on a good display of draw bowling and was holding two to three shots on several occasions forcing Bruce to “kill the end. However, with the score level at 24-24 on the 28th end, Bruce rattled off the required seven shots over the next five ends to claim the title with a win of 31-24 and will represent Zone 15 at the State Titles at East Maitland Bowling Club in October. At the presentation ceremony runner-up Lee Trethowan paid tribute to the greens preparation. “The greens were running brilliantly. “Greenkeeper Nathan Malloy has done a fantastic job, said Mr Trethowan. The experience of

Matthew Watts from Diggers@The Entrance was the telling factor in his 3118 win over relatively new bowler David Weige from Ettalong Memorial in the 2013 Bowls Central Coast President’s Reserve Singles Final. David, a student of alternative medicine, has been bowling for the past 18 months and “rolls up at his club several days a week for up to three hours at a time, which has paid off with a good showing, at this level, against a player who has had previous Zone finals experience. There was not much between the two contestants in the early stages, with the score level at 3-3 on end three and 8-8 on end eight, until end 18 when David seemed to hit a brick wall. Matthew scored nine shots over the next eight ends to take a commanding lead which he held to the end, despite David rallying

He will join the other Singles winners at East Maitland in October for the State Titles. It was an all Terrigal Bowling Club affair in the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Senior Singles Final between club mates Gary Murphy and Miro Perovic. Despite getting out to a 6-1 lead after four ends, Gary was overtaken by Miro who won the next four ends for nine shots which propelled himself into the lead. From there, Miro powered away to the finish by winning 13 ends to six, with a final score of 31-17. It’s been a big year for Miro Perovic, who won the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Triples Championship with Peter Freestone and Adam Pinkerton in February, the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Senior Pairs Championship on July 20 with partner David Limbrick and had a strong performance representing the Zone as part of the Bowls Central Coast Representative Side. Miro now leads the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Playerof-the-Year points score table and will represent the Zone in the Senior Singles and Senior Pairs at the State Titles at East Maitland Bowling Club in October.

In the semi-final between the Ettalong Eagles pair and their grade one Pennant foes, Justin Shelley and Brett Pritchard from Avoca Beach Bowling Club, the Peninsula boys stung Avoca on the first end by scoring five shots, and raced ahead to lead 14-1 at end 10. The Avoca pair fared better in the second half of the game with Justin Shelley putting down consistently good lead bowls.

The men will play a four day carnival at Avoca Beach Bowling Club, Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club and Terrigal Bowling Club on Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday. If so, are you a past President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer of a Bowling Club, then you can become a full member of the PP’s, if not you can join as a Social Member and play in this prestige event.

Avoca went down to Ettalong 25-14 after 20 ends, with play not required in the last end. Ettalong was into the afternoon’s final. In the other semi-final, Brian Howe and Michael Stead from Halekulani were too strong for Wyong’s Appollo Birch and Mark Wheatley, taking out the match 25-15 and booking themselves a finals berth against Ettalong. After the lunch break the Major Pairs Final got underway and finished with a score of 23 shots to 16. With all four combatants displaying top quality bowls that drew applause from the spectators it was the Ettalong pair that once again clawed their way ahead to claim the Championship and valuable points on the Bowls Central Coast Player of the Year points score table. The 2013 Bowls Central Coast President’s Reserve Pairs Final witnessed the biggest turnaround of the day when Ettalong’s

Robert Taylor and Brian Brailey came from behind to overtake the Bateau Bay father and son team of Michael and Ray Peck to grab a 28-22 victory. Although Michael and Ray were leading 19-12 after end 16, the Ettalong pair unleashed a barrage that saw them overwhelm Bateau Bay and run away with the game and the title. It was a huge day for the Terrigal Bowling Club team of David Limbrick and Miro Perovic who stormed their way through the morning’s semi-final game with a big win (27 shots to 14) over Ettalong’s pairing of Danny McNeilly and John Roberts and so secured themselves a spot in the afternoon’s Final of the 2013 Bowls Central Coast Senior Pairs Championship. Meanwhile, on the next rink the other semi-final was an all The Entrance Bowling Club clash between their two teams of Mick Bell and David Buttery versus Peter McCarten

and Bill Constantine with Constantine getting the upper hand over his club mates and claiming a victory of 24 shots to 19 and the other place in the Final. The sun came out for the Final and so did the two teams from The Entrance and Terrigal but it was the Terrigal pair of Limbrick and Perovik that continued on their steamroller way as they did in the morning’s semi-final. By end 16 they were 17 shots (24-7) clear of McCarten and Constantine who then managed to cut the lead back to nine shots at the end, finally going down 11 shots to Terrigal’s 25. The winners in the three Pairs sections will join the other Bowls Central Coast winners in Singles, Triples and Fours to represent the Central Coast at the State Championship Finals to be held at East Maitland Bowling Club from October 12 to 19.

Brad Best competes in National Championship Tim McParlane Woy Woy Junior Rugby League Football Club

oy Woy Roosters 121s player Bradman Best has been selected to play for the NSW All Schools Rugby League Team at the National Championship in Perth which began on August 3 and will continue until August 11.

W

“The path to selection has been a long one for the Year 6 St John Baptist student, whose parents Tobin and Roger clocked up the kilometres to get Bradman to games and training,” said Woy Woy Junior Rugby League Football Club secretary Mr Tim McParlane. In May this year, Bradman trialled at Tuggerah and was selected in the Broken Bay team which covered all catholic schools from

the Northern Beaches and Central Coast areas. The victors then travelled to Bathurst, with Bradman trialling for two days before he was selected in the Polding team. In June, the Polding team competed in the State Carnival for three days against teams such as Sydney North, Sydney West, Sydney South East, Hunter and MacKillop. The Polding team finished third overall out of 14 teams, with Bradman scoring in every game and kicking seven goals from eight attempts. At the end of the carnival, a 34 player squad was selected for NSW with Bradman showing enough talent to be selected in the squad. The squad went into camp two weeks later at the NSW Academy of Sport in Narrabeen for five days

of extensive training three times a day, and trialling against Parramatta’s under14s representative side. Upon completion of the camp, when the parents arrived to pick up their boys, the teams were announced with Bradman being successfully selected in the first team at lock. “Bradman loved every minute of the camp and was excited with selection in the state team, but was totally exhausted after the gruelling five days, falling asleep before hitting the freeway on the trip home,” said Bradman’s mum Tobi. Bradman is joined on the trip to Western Australia by hid dad Roger and granddad Peter, with Peter under strict instructions to record all Bradman’s games for the rest of the family to enjoy on their return.

Mr Taylor has had a long association with the Wyong club, coaching first grade in the Central Coast division competition for several years with notable success. He then moved on to coach, among others, Parramatta Eels and

Football Committee chairman Mr Phil Langley said the Roos were surprised by the quality of applicants for the position. “These applicants included a former NRL coach and several international players of some renown,” Mr Langley said. “The great work Paul Stringer, his players and support staff have done for this season has made people sit up and take notice. “Wyong Roos are now a prominent part of the rugby league landscape.

“Rip Taylor is a good fit for us as head coach. “He brings considerable experience and a wealth of ideas to the position. “The Board is confident that Rip will quickly build upon the strong platform established by Paul and is the man to take us where we want to be football wise over the next few years.” The Roos take on Cronulla Sharks on Saturday, August 3, at Leichardt Oval in Round 21 of the VB NSW Cup. efore a large crowd at Heazlett Park, Avoca Beach maintained their position at the top of the Central Coast Rugby Union competition ladder when they defeated Terrigal by 28 points to 18 on Saturday, August 3.

B

It was a tight match throughout and only a try in the final minutes of the match cemented the win. The first half went point for point for the whole 40 minutes. Terrigal led at the halftime break by 8-7 and both teams had real opportunities of victory. Both teams were able to cross for a single try in the first period and neither team was able to make a break on the opposition on the scoreboard. Both teams had several good players in the first half with Terrigal best served by halfback Doug Angus, on his

return from injury, number eight Rob Heads and inside centre Mitch Hirst. Lock Phil Heard was also strong both in the set pieces and in general play. Avoca Beach had several good contributors but none were better than flanker Sam Fortey, and backs Adrian Jones and James Latham. The second half opened up a little on the scoreboard. Avoca Beach were soon able to score a converted try to take the lead in the match by 14 points to eight. They increased that lead further and, by the midway point of the second half, were able to hold a handy 21-11 lead. It seemed at that stage

the match was theirs with time running out. However, Terrigal at this stage, played some committed rugby and were able to get back into the game. The visitors scored a converted try to reduce the lead to 21-18 and the match was up for grabs. Avoca Beach were able to secure the win in the final minute with a try, almost against the run of play. It was a good win to Avoca Beach and almost ensures them the Minor Premiership this year. The loss by Terrigal makes things difficult for them now to reach the semi-finals but they are still hanging on by

a thread because of other results on the day. In a minor upset, Warnervale defeated Gosford by 44-7 at Woongarah Oval. Warnervale took control of the match right from the opening whistle and never looked in doubt of gaining what was a most meritorious victory. Within 20 minutes of the opening whistle Warnervale led by 20 points to nil, and by halftime had increased that lead to 30 points to nil. For Warnervale, no player was better than number eight Afele Tongia who simply controlled proceedings. He was able to cross for four tries in what was a most dominant individual performance. The Warnervale forward pack controlled possession for practically the whole match and on numerous occasions mauled the ball for metres and metres with Gosford unable to stop proceedings. Other players to perform for the home team were Kevin McNamara and Netane Tonga. Gosford simply had no answer on the day. Gosford flanker Andrew Moseley almost played a lone hand and was their

best player but even his efforts could not stop what was a great effort by the Warnervale team. The home side scored a further converted try early in the second half to lead by 37-nil and Gosford were then finally able to cross for their first points with a converted try. Warnervale led by 37-7 and the match was locked up. The win sees Warnervale into the semi-finals for the first time in their club history while, despite the big loss by Gosford, they are also assured of a spot in the Finals Series. In another minor upset, Kariong played well to defeat Ourimbah by 19-6 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The loss by Ourimbah put them in a precarious position in fourth spot with two teams, Kariong and Terrigal, looming just behind. Ourimbah got away to a great start with two penalty goals to Ryan Pike and led by 6-0 early on. But that was to be there last point scoring for the match. Kariong were able to post 19 points in the remainder of the match while the home side remained scoreless. Kariong gained the lead

midway through the first half and led by 12-6 at the halftime break. Best players for Kariong were flanker Josh Botero, halfback Scott Hanley and prop Shannon Beavan. Ourimbah were best served by lock Tyler Jones and flyhalf Joel Wagner. Kariong scored the only points of the second half with a converted try and had jumped to a winning lead of 19-6. It was a most pleasing win by the Kariong team after some most disappointing losses in recent weeks, while Ourimbah will need to quickly get back onto the winning list if they are to make their mark in the big matches later in the year. The Entrance and Woy Woy played out a 17-all draw at Joseph Banks Oval. The Entrance had the better of the early stages of the match and went to a handy lead but it was Woy Woy who finished a little stronger and got themselves right back into the match. Both teams scored three tries and there was obviously nothing between the two sides. The Woy Woy team did have a chance to grab victory with a penalty shot at the final whistle but it went astray. Best player for The Entrance was lock Luke McLenaghan, while Russell Hughan and Nick Valentine both performed well. Woy Woy were best served by Blake Batton and Paul Vulavusa.

The five Hall of Fame inductees, who all began their playing careers as juniors with Central Coast clubs before progressing to higher levels, are Damien Brown, Andrew Clark, Renaye Iserief, Andrew French and Dale Eggleton. Written and produced by Alistair Kennedy and Kevin Best, ‘The History of Central Coast Football’, is the culmination of nearly three years of research undertaken by a sevenman history committee established by Central Coast Football in 2010. The book comprises a chronological coverage of each season from 1963 through to 2012 including junior and senior men’s and women’s club and representative competitions; expanding to cover the success story of the Central Coast Mariners from 200506 through to their triumph in the 2012-13 A-League grand final. There are also extended profiles of the five Hall of Fame inductees, Life Members and other notable contributors, concluding with 75 pages of comprehensive records and statistics. Mariners team up with Coast Shelter

Central Coast Mariners

entral Coast Mariners have announced Coast Shelter as the first of five Official Club Charity Partners for the 2013-14 Hyundai A-League season.

C

Coast Shelter is a notfor-profit charity based on the Central Coast which provides accommodation and support programs for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The charity has been operating for over 20 years and provides accommodation to over 150 men, women, families and youth every night. While the Mariners and Coast Shelter have worked on a variety of initiatives in the past, this is the first time the two organisations have formed an official partnership. Coast Shelter’s Vicki de Carle said working regularly

in unison with the Mariners is set to benefit the lives of many of the Central Coast’s disadvantaged individuals and families. “To have the Mariners nominate Coast Shelter as an Official Charity Partner for the 2013-14 season will make a difference to so many lives,” Ms de Carle said. “The Mariners’ support will bring awareness, and with that comes understanding and much needed funds.” The partnership between the reigning A-League champions and Coast Shelter will kick off on Friday, August 9, when star players Matt Simon and Zac Anderson, together with members of the club’s administration staff, sleep outside at the Australian Reptile Park. Coinciding with Homeless Persons Week, Coast Shelter’s Zoo and Snooze evening will take executives,

business owners and other locals out of their comfort zone for an evening to help raise awareness of homelessness on the Coast. Central Coast Mariners Group general manager Mr Peter Turnbull said the club is delighted to have partnered with an organisation that is unwavering in its commitment to the wellbeing of the people of the region. “Coast Shelter is a wonderful organisation, one that I have discovered provides over 50,000 meals every year at no cost to homeless individuals around the Central Coast,” Mr Turnbull said. “Naturally, we are very pleased to be able to use our club’s profile to support Coast Shelter and disadvantaged people around the region.” For more information on Coast Shelter, visit www. coastshelter.org.au.

“Our alignment with these two academies is significant,” said AUS Recruit national manager Mr Mick Ellison. “It creates the opportunity for a sporting and educational pathway for hundreds of young athletes in this region of NSW. “The Central Coast Academy of Sport is already recognised as one of the most successful breeding grounds for Aussie sports stars. “Their association with AUS Recruit now opens up a whole new field of dreams.” Mr Ellison said AUS Recruit was established to create a clear pathway between young Australian sportspeople and the numerous university sporting scholarships available in the

United States. “The opportunity for sporting scholarships in the USA is nothing new, but we believe the system in the past was too vague and ad hoc,” he said. “What we have done is provided a clear system where athletes, and their families, can have a clear appreciation of what is available and how they can apply. “The key advantage to the American university scholarship system is that athletes can follow their sporting dreams, but also achieve a tertiary education that assures them of a career post-sport.” Mr Ellison said many young Australian athletes did not realise that they fitted the criteria for a sports scholarship. “These scholarships are not just for the elite,” he said. “Depending on the sport and the individual, some athletes will successfully apply for a scholarship without having represented their chosen sport at state level. “What AUS Recruit can do is answer all the questions. “Education is a key component of these

scholarships. “Sure it is about the athlete getting expert coaching and being a part of a constant high-standard competition, but it is also about successfully pursuing the university degree that will set him or her up for life.” Mr Ellison said the partnership with the Central Coast Academy of Sport allowed athletes within the academy the opportunity to step directly from high school into a university sporting scholarship in the United States. “Athletes at the academy will be constantly updated and informed and given the best possible chance of obtaining a USA sporting scholarship,” he said. Founded in 2004, the CCAS offers a total of 13 high performance sporting programs including AFL, athletics, basketball, football (soccer), golf, lawn bowls, netball, rugby league, rugby union, surfing, swimming, triathlon and future stars, which is an individual scholarship program providing development and support to athletes in a range of different sports that sit outside the programs on offer through the CCAS.

Sophie began skiing when she was only 3-yearsold, later deciding to move on to snowboarding. Running impressive times in the Snowboard Grand Slam, Sophie was rewarded with a silver medal, beaten by last year’s Australian Champion. Sophie also obtained a bronze medal in the Snowboard Cross event, a race involving a series of features such as jumps and beams. After two snowboard podium finishes, Sophie has now qualified for the NSW State Championships which will be held in August later this year.

The aim of the Foundation is to raise and distribute funds to support young athletes in the form of annual scholarships and one-off payments for those suffering hardship as a result of chasing their sporting goals. Foundation patrons and founders Anthony and Kerrie Clarke said they were humbled by the support of the Central Coast sporting and business community and everyone who had donated prizes, money and their time to the Foundation. “In particular, we wish to thank our major sponsors Mingara and Eagles Plumbing, who have supported us from day one

and are sponsoring the gala dinner again this year,” Mr Clarke said. “As parents, we understand the sacrifice and cost required to support our children’s sporting dreams and we are proud the Foundation has been able to assist the 41 athletes to this date and the countless number who we will assist in the future,” Mrs Clarke said. “We sincerely thank

the people of the Central Coast, as we would not have achieved this success without them and invite everyone to join us at the upcoming dinner.” Since it began in 2007, the Foundation has awarded 41 athletes from 22 different sports a total of 74 scholarships worth over $115,000.

Council agrees to three year $360,000 partnership with Mariners Gosford Council Agenda SF.13
