Steve Allen hosted the evening, with the Outstanding Service of Sport to the Central Coast being awarded to Brian Gee, Shannon Woodley, Lynn Smith and Ross Bryant. Sportsperson of the Year went to Tom Slingsby for Sailing with Matt Ryan as runner up forfootball. Central Coast Sports

Event of the Year went to the Bay to Bay Fun Run and Half Marathon while Central Coast Team of the Year went to Mingara Athletics U20 800m. Club-Association of the Year was awarded to Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club and Leisl Tesch won the Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability award for sailing. Indigenous Sportsperson of the Year went to Jarrad Hayes for golf, Masters Sportsperson of the Yea went to Paul Lemmon for surf lifesaving and swimming and Volunteer of the Year went to Jeff Vilensk y for his contribution to Cricket. A council environmental health officer attended the site to investigate and issued a direction to the owner to ensure all damaged and exposed asbestos was covered or sealed and to have a licensed asbestos contractor remove all loose, damaged and exposed asbestos. The tenant’s mother, Ms Genevieve Rose, told Peninsula News that her brother, a builder, had found asbestos scattered around the house during the renovations. She said: “There were no safety precautions taken, no safety wear or ventilation mask, no safety gloves and no warning to anyone who entered the property.” She said that she called the real estate agent to warn them. The council’s environmental health co-ordinator Mr Shannon McKiernan said: “If the owner doesn’t comply with the notice of intent, an order will be served

requiring them to do the work. “If they still don’t comply, Council will undertake the works at the owner’s expense.” He said the council also had the option to proceed with court action. The notice gave the owner seven days to secure the site and to engage an appropriately licensed contractor. It allowed additional time for the contractor to complete the work. Mr McKiernan said a person could only do their own renovating work where the area of asbestos was under 10 square metres. As a result of the incident, the council has announced it will partner with the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute as part of a week-long national campaign to highlight the dangers of asbestos related diseases caused by inhaling asbestos fibres while renovating or maintaining homes. “Don’t play Renovation Roulette” is the message that Gosford Council, the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute and the Asbestos Education Committee is sending to residents and ratepayers during national Asbestos Awareness Week which runs from November 26 to 30.

“With the number of people diagnosed with mesothelioma as a direct result of exposure to asbestos during home renovations continuing to rise, it’s vital that residents take the warnings seriously to protect themselves and their families,” mayor Cr McKinna said. The national campaign, supported by the Asbestos Education Committee, aims to change the way Australian’s think about how they manage asbestos in and around the home. Asbestos Education Committee chair Mr Peter Dunphy said whether a home is constructed of brick, fibro and weatherboard or has exterior cladding, asbestos can be found almost everywhere in and around homes built or renovated before the mid 80s. “Most people can’t tell whether building materials contain asbestos just by looking at them. “Asbestos can be under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings, eaves, garages, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, outdoor toilets and backyard sheds, it could be anywhere.

“Before commencing any home maintenance or renovation work, homeowners and renovators, particularly young couples and first home buyers excited about renovating their homes, need to learn about where they might find asbestos in the home and how best to manage it so they can protect themselves and their families from asbestos fibres. “We want them to start thinking smart and safe by visiting asbestosawareness.com.au for information on managing asbestos in and around the home because it’s not worth the risk,” Mr Dunphy said. “An upgrade of this scale requires detailed planning and a staged approach,” said Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein. “Before the road can be built, many of the utilities need to be relocated. "Brisbane Water Dr and Manns Rd are vital links between Gosford, Woy Woy and Narara providing access to railway stations, local businesses and retail centres, the Central Coast Highway and the F3 Freeway. "Access to all residential and commercial properties needs to be maintained along with trafﬁc ﬂow for the 70,000 vehicles which use the intersection each day. “Work has started on building a local access road linking Ferguson Close and Kulara Ave. "This will enable BelHilton Pde to be closed and a road between Dyer Crescent and Grieve Close to be built to provide local access during the project. “Storm water drainage improvements will be carried out in advance of major work,” Mr Holstein said. Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna said Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestosrelated diseases in the world. This was because Australia has been ranked among the top consumers of asbestos cement products per capita. “With almost every home built or renovated before the mid 1980s likely to contain asbestos in one form or another; the third wave of people affected by mesothelioma, one of the asbestos-related diseases, has recently become evident and will continue to rise unless we all start taking seriously the dangers of asbestos when renovating or maintaining our homes,” said mayor Cr McKinna. In the past, those affected by asbestos related diseases were exposed to raw fibres in the mining and manufacturing process (first wave), followed by workers who used asbestos products in the workplace (second wave). The third wave of asbestosrelated diseases predominantly affect people exposed to fibres during home renovations and maintenance specifically handymen and DIYers as well as family members present at the time.

Council issues asbestos notice Gosford Council has issued a notice to a Umina property owner to clean up an asbestos hazard after receiving complaints about renovations from a tenant occupying the house.

Council in negotiations with developer over proposed $500M Chinese Theme Park yong Council received an updated report on the status of the proposed site for a Chinese Cultural Theme Park on Warren Rd, Warnervale, at its ordinary meeting of Wednesday, November 19.

Chinese Theme Park representative Ms Amanda Lee addressed the meeting and explained how the venue would provide jobs for residents of Wyong Shire and would be a boost for the local economy. Ms Lee said while the majority of the revenue for the theme park would come from private proprietors, the Chinese Government was supportive of their plan to construct in Warnervale. It was resolved at the meeting that the mayor and general manager urgently negotiate with Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd with the objective of achieving an agreement for sale of the proposed site where Council’s risks and liabilities would be minimised and where a satisfactory sale price was offered by the purchaser. Council has received a number of visits and documents from Chinese delegates during the past two years, with many inﬂuential businessmen and Government ofﬁcials indicating support for the project. All support is dependent upon the issue of land tenure and zoning issues

being resolved between Council and Australia Theme Park Pty. The site, at Lot 3 Warren Rd, Warnervale, has a total area of 179.277 Ha. The site includes Warnervale Airport and a portion of Porters Creek wetland. The village would be a working village with accommodation, shops, restaurants, galleries and tourist accommodation. The proposal is expected to cost in the vicinity of $500 million making it one of the largest private sector developments in Wyong Shire and the Central Coast. In March last year Council considered a Mayoral Minute in relation to the proposal from Australia China Cultural Foundation Incorporated (ACCFI) to develop a Chinese Theme Park on Council owned land at Warnervale. Council resolved among others matters to enter into a co-operation agreement to continue to progress the project. This agreement was formally entered into on Monday, August 15, 2011 with mayor Cr Doug Eaton and the President of ACCFI, Mr Bruce Zhong signing the

agreement. The terms of the agreement identified that Council grant ACCFI a non-exclusive licence to enter the land for the sole purpose of carrying out investigatory works to support the development of the project. The period of the agreement was from Friday, July 1, 2011, to Thursday, June 30, 2012, with the agreement having now lapsed. During the period of the agreement ACCFI engaged consultants Cardno to undertake a desktop review of environment, engineering and planning constraints with regard to the proposed development. The review identified that the current zoning of the property as Industrial would not permit all of their proposed uses, however, this matter could be addressed by making a submission to rezone the land to permit the proposed land use through the exhibition period of LEP 2012. The cost of this review undertaken by Cardno is reported to be in the vicinity of $250,000. At a councillor briefing session held in June of this year, an update of the current situation was presented

with particular emphasis being placed on the ﬁnancial models available to this project. In August this year, an offer to purchase the site from Council was received from Mr Zhong, however, this offer was considered unacceptable to Council with a response being forwarded detailing Council's position in the matter. In October, Council

received a conditional offer to purchase the site for $10 million from the Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd. The conditions imposed inappropriate risk and obligations on Council and as such the offer was rejected and the Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd was advised accordingly. Council staff are currently preparing a land economics report

PCYC hosts basketball challenge by David Cole

undreds of young people descended on the Bateau Bay PCYC for the National Indigenous 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge – the Vibe 3on3 on Friday, November 23.

Over 60 teams and over 200 young people from Wyong schools participated in the 3on3. The action-packed event featured a 3on3 basketball tournament, rapping and break dancing lessons, art workshops, a dance competition and a health expo. Community Engagement manager Ms Medika Thorpe said the event was well-received by the community. “The community was so excited about the event, extremely supportive and the kids had a fabulous time. “There were over 60 teams, which was a wonderful turn out in

this community,” said Ms Thorpe. “Aunty Bronwyn Chambers welcomed us to country accompanied by her grandson who played the didgeridoo. “Federal Member for Dobell Craig Thomson and State Member for the Entrance Chris Spence also attended the opening ceremony. “The Kanwal Aboriginal Girls Dance Group performed a traditional contemporary piece followed by the angelic voice of young singer dancer Laila Lake singing My Island Home. “We also had the Jump Rope for Heart kids performing a skipping performance.” Ms Thorpe said the dance breakoff competition was just one of the exciting parts of a jam-packed day. “The kids really shine when they’re on the dance mat. “The day was jampacked with activities, including a special addition

un Mariners duo Mathew Ryan and Tomas Rogic have earned another opportunity to impress Qantas Socceroos boss Holger Osieck with selection in the German’s provisional 25man squad for the 2013 East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) East Asian Cup qualifying tournament to be held in Hong Kong next month.

Ryan and Rogic linked with their Qantas Socceroos teammates in Sydney on Monday, November 26, in preparation for games against the host country, North Korea, Guam and Chinese Taipei from December 3 to 9. Rogic made his Qantas Socceroos debut against Korea Republic in Hwaseong earlier this month and earned praise from pundits for his efforts off the bench as Australia secured a narrow 2-1 win over their hosts. Ryan has yet to take

Mariners close to re-gaining ladder lead

entral Coast Mariners have closed the gap on ladder leader Adelaide United to just two points after a well-earned 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in the Hyundai A-League round eight clash at Bluetongue Stadium on Sunday, November 25.

Goals from Central Coast young guns Bernie Ibini and Tomas Rogic sealed the victory for the yellow and navy against Rado Vidosic’s men. The triumph was the Mariners’ first ever over Roar at Gosford. The hosts looked dangerous from the outset and the Bluetongue faithful didn’t have to wait long to see the Mariners take the lead. A classy header from youngster Ibini sent his side ahead four minutes in following some neat interplay in the midfield and a pinpoint cross from marauding right-back Pedj Bojic. Brisbane weren’t happy and were handed a chance of their own 10 minutes later as Ben Halloran fired a cross-cum-shot into the box. Nevertheless, he failed to trouble keeper Mathew Ryan who made a comfortable save. Gun midfielder Rogic

was looking to double the advantage for Graham Arnold’s men not long after as defender Josh Rose played provider following a strong run down the left flank. The recently capped Qantas Socceroo midfielder Rogic struck his curling effort well, but unfortunately for the home team the shot thumped against the woodwork. Roar responded in the 32nd minute through Massimo Murdocca. The diminutive blasted a low strike past Ryan from the edge of the area. Soon after tempers began to flare in Gosford as Albanian ace Besart Berisha made a nasty challenge on Mariners’ stopper Trent Sainsbury. Players from both teams were involved in a heated exchange, with Berisha as well as Mariners marksman Daniel McBreen receiving yellow cards following the melee. Roar came closest to entering the sheds at half time a goal to the good, however, Central Coast skipper John Hutchinson was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line following a goalmouth scramble. It was a cagey start to the second stanza, with relatively few clear-cut opportunities created by either side soon after the restart.

Rogic sent Brisbane custodian Michael Theo scrambling on the 55-minute mark as he fired a longrange effort just wide. The Canberra-born talent was in the action again soon after as he delivered a dangerous ball to McBreen. Brisbane’s defence retreated well, clearing the ball for a corner. The home side continued to press and were rewarded for their efforts in the 81st minute as an impressive Bojic free kick found New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey. McGlinchey nodded the ball back to Rogic who made no mistake in finding the back of the net for the third time this campaign. Both coaches decided to make changes as the clock wound down. Rogic left the pitch to a standing ovation from the Bluetongue faithful, while

Mitchell Duke entered the fray. Nick Fitzgerald replaced Halloran for Roar. Arnold’s men had a good opportunity to add another goal to the scoreboard in stoppage time as substitute Duke slammed the crossbar after receiving a neat pass from Oliver Bozanic. But goals from Ibini and Rogic were enough for Central Coast to secure their third home win of the season and consolidate their place in second position on the Hyundai A-League ladder. Post-match, Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold expressed his delight that his team had made history at Bluetongue Stadium. “I had no idea of that stat until yesterday,” Arnold said of the fact the Mariners had never beaten Brisbane Roar on the banks of the Brisbane Water.

“The boys made history today which is great. “It was a good game overall, a good spectacle in those conditions. “It was tough for both teams but I thought we did very well today.” Arnold explained that he believed most clubs’ depth would be tested over the coming rounds with many Hyundai A-League players away on Qantas Socceroos duty in Hong Kong. “I think the next couple of weeks are going to be interesting because there are a lot of players missing with the Socceroos,” he said. “It will be a test of depth for clubs, for sure. “(But) we look forward to a top-of-the-table clash next week against Adelaide here at Bluetongue.” Central Coast Mariners host John Kosmina’s ladder leading Adelaide United

Jake O’Brien is Junior Sportsperson of the Year u n i o r Sportsperson of the Year was awarded to 17 year old Jake O’Brien for Oztag, surf lifesaving and rugby league.

Jake competed in the All Schools Trans-Tasman Tour to New Zealand in the Australian Junior U18’s Oztag team and was selected to play in the World Cup Australia Junior U18’s Oztag team in December. He also plays in the Country Bulls Team. In surf lifesaving, he represented NSW in Interstate Championships and won one gold and two silver medals.

He also won both Branch and State Titles in the U17 Beach Sprint and Flags. In rugby league, he was selected for the Newcastle Knights Harold Matthews Team and is an U17s Development Squad member. He played in the Grand Final for the Kincumber Colts first Grade team and went on the Rugby League Development Tour of the UK competing with the Central Coast Centurions winning all six games on tour.

The club has over 1,000 members including over 340 junior members and over 350 active patrolling lifesavers. Last season, the club completed 8,011 patrol hours and 739 water safety hours supporting the beach going public. One hundred and 97 members completed new training and education courses, 340 juniors achieved SLSA age qualifications and over 400 proficiencies for existing awards were conducted. Jeff successfully designed a reporting and recording system that has been crucial in streamlining processes for future volunteers. Terrigal Cup brings competition to Coast by Peter Freestone

he inaugural Terrigal Cup was held on Monday, November 5, at Terrigal Bowling Club which saw 28 teams take to the green.

The internationals were there representing the likes of England, Ireland, Italy, Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Cabramatta also attended, bringing with them two Argentinians. With three games of 15 ends, two bowl men’s triples, and $3,000 prize money up for grabs the contestants were eager to get off to a good start. Terrigal home team of Neil Massey, Jeff Watson

and David Neilsen set up a sizeable lead of plus 19 ahead of Avoca locals Graham Ross, Alan Lewin and Col Passfield plus 1. Hot on their heels were Andrew Parsons, Josh Wilton and Brendon Poidevin from The Greens The Entrance with plus 10. The second game saw teams make their moves to be in a winning position for the run home. Butch Stevens team of Neville Hillyard and Gary McFadyen from Avoca moved to the lead on plus 21. There was nothing in the score for second between early front runner David Neilsen, the well weighted Brendon Poidevin and Michael Stead from

Halekulani in his first run back from a spell, all on two wins plus 20. In the end, it was the Brendon Poidevin team on three wins plus 33 who were declared the winners with a count back needed to split second placed David Neilsen from third placed Michael Stead and his team of Sid Winslade and Steve Banbury on three wins plus 32 with the old campaigners Alan Brooks, Peter Lydieth and Neil Dell (Comp) flashing home for fourth place with three wins plus 25. Bowls tournament recording made easy

owls Central Coast-Zone 15 IT advisor Geoff Graham has written a series of bowls tournament spread sheet files that eliminate the effort required when manually recording progressive scores on a whiteboard or sheets of paper as in the past.

These files also virtually eliminate errors. The files have been designed to be used when the results of the tournament are to be decided on the number of wins plus margins or wins plus ends or points for wins and ends. These files have provision to alter the number of ends to be played and the points allocated for a win. There are also specific files available for use in Versatility fours and sixes tournaments. The Excel files, with comprehensive user notes,

can be downloaded free of charge from the Bowls Central Coast website www. bowlscentralcoast.org.au by clicking on Club Pages then Tournament Software on the drop-down list. A number of Clubs on the Central Coast

ollowing the final of the NSW Country Cricket Championships, the NSW Country team has been selected including two Central Coast players.

Mitchell Coombs of Lisarow and Blair Lindsay will join the other 11 players on the trip to Bundaberg from January 3 to 15. Central Coast resident Glenn Rowlands was also selected as the coach for the team. The side contains six new

faces in Cameron Belshaw, Josh Bennett, Mitchell Coombs, Trent Colley, Brett Davies and Blair Lindsay which, combined with the existing experienced players, bodes well in NSW Countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attempt to retain the Championship Shield.

Batting first, North Coast could only manage 9-107 from their allotted overs, with only Michael Rixon (28) and Andrew Trappel (22) showing any form. The Central Coast attack was consistent with Chris Archer and Mark Smith each taking two wickets supported by some good fielding. In reply, the Coasters

quickly knocked up the runs for a bonus point victory in 20 overs led by an unbeaten 53 from Stuart Lockyear and 31no from Blair Lindsay. On day three, Central Coast entered this clash against Central Northern knowing that they required a double bonus point win to have any chance of qualifying for the Final. Central Northern had first use of the conditions but, despite Jayden Hoare (23) and Nick De Guisti (20) getting starts, could only manage 133. Ben Sunshine enjoyed a good day out with the ball taking 4-19, while Mark Smith and Chris Archer took two wickets a piece.

Central Coast attacked right from the start of their innings in pursuit of bonus points led by some aggressive batting from Matt Jones and Ryan Fenning (27). Victory was achieved in the 22nd over which saw the much needed bonus points attained, with Matt Jones unbeaten on 50. The Central Coast team comprised Chris Archer, Dylan Robertson, Matt Jones, Ryan Fenning, Stuart Lockyer, Dave Mitchell, Ben Sunshine, Dane Hokin, Scott Burkinshaw, Mitchell Coombs, Blair Lindsay and Mark Smith with Glenn Rowlands as coach and Geoff Patterson as manager.

entral Coast Marlins baseball team lost to league leading Baulkham Hills Kookaburras 6-4 on Sunday, November 18, at Baseball Park, Springfield.

It was a bad start defensively, with several errors in the top of the first inning allowing the Kookaburras to take a 2-0 lead. The Kookaburras then tacked on another run in the second inning via a solo home run from Zac Shepherd. The Marlins’ defence settled and allowed the

batters to wake up. In the bottom of the third, Greg Woods reached, as did Jason Rees, via a hit and they both scored on Pat Maat’s single to bring the score to 3-2. Paul Anderson was the starting pitcher for the Marlins and settled in nicely. It wasn’t until the fifth inning that Baulkham Hills plated another run after a two-out hit. The Marlins threatened in the fifth and sixth but failed to get the big hit. Paul Anderson then turned the ball over to brother Craig who threw another two scoreless innings to give Marlins a chance. Marlins scored a run in

the bottom of the eighth and Mitch Dening doubled and scored on Pat Maat’s single. Marlins’ defence again let them down in the top of the ninth, with three errors contributing to Baulkham Hills plating two runs to lead 6-4. Marlins got runners aboard in the bottom of the ninth but could not get the big hit. Maat and Rees were the offensive standouts with two hits apiece. Marlins will resume play against Penrith on Wednesday, December 5, after their two week break due to the bye and State League’s All Star game.

he late Ashley C h a p m a n , beloved mentor to hundreds of young Central Coast sailors, was honoured at a memorial regatta held by Budgewoi Sailing Club on the weekend of November 17 and 18.

Umina Boardriders competition held

m i n a Boardriders held its most recent surfing competition on Sunday, October 28, which saw Mat Munson take out the Opens event.

Craig Glynn came in second followed by Luke McLachlan and Shane Roser. In the Masters, it was Brian Cook who was awarded the honours with Glen Bible in second, Tony Wilson in third, Kevin Miller in fourth and Luke Gehrels in fifth.

Co-founder of Budgewoi Sailing Club in 1972, Ashley died on October 4, aged 99. He raced his Corsair dinghy Sadie Too with the club until just 18 months before his death. A total of 29 boats took part in the memorial regatta,

14 of them veteran Corsair 16ft family monohulls which was, for 40 years, Ashley’s favourite class of dinghy. Sailors from as far afield as Queensland competed in the four-race program. On the beach before the first race on Sunday morning, former Corsair Class national champion George Watt spoke movingly of Ashley’s life and achievements and a minute’s silence was observed to the fitting background rustle of the fleet’s sails. At the trophy ceremony after the last race on Sunday, Mark Vandersteen, whom Ashley taught to sail as a boy and who has now

taken over as club senior instructor, said “There are not many places where a 10 year old might think of an 80 year old as his or her best friend, but that is how it was here for so many of us”. Trophies were presented by former NSW Premier Nathan Rees whose family has long had a holiday home in Budgewoi. Mr Vandersteen thanked sailors from surrounding clubs, notably Toukley and Mannering Park, for turning out and helping make the regatta an outstanding success. He indicated that the club intended to make the regatta an annual event.

The Cadets was won by Mason Reineker followed by Jake Monsalve, Jack O’Connell and Shannon Adams. The Club’s November competition, originally scheduled for Sunday, November 18, was postponed due to a lack of swell. Umina Boardriders will hold its End of Year presentation on Saturday, December 8, at Patonga

Beach Hotel where trophies and prizes will be presented in each division. The prizes will be awarded based on the points tallied from the Club’s monthly competition. The first competition for the New Year will be held in February with the Club also deciding to change the competition dates for the year to the second weekend of the month.
