Skipping his team of Mark Casey (third), Brett Wilkie (second) and Wayne Ruediger (lead) in the Men’s Fours, the Australian Jackeroos snared their gold medals with a convincing 22-13 victory over South Africa. Lead Wayne Ruediger from Adelaide achieved his life-long dream of achieving a world gold medal on his home soil and declared, “Words can’t describe how I feel right now, I’m so happy”. “I never expected to be a World Champion.

“A year ago I didn’t think it was possible,” said Wayne. In the semi-final thriller against the powerhouse Scottish team, Aron steered his team to an 18 shot margin before they squandered the advantage as the Scots rallied and staged a fight back to fall just short of the Australians, 23-22. “What a game,” said National coach Steve Glasson. “We got off to a really good start and began to run away with it, but we took our foot off and, full credit to Scotland, they fought back”. Aron also won silver in the Men’s Pairs on Thursday, December 6, when he led for world number two Leif Selby in a final that saw the duo lose by five shots to arguably the world’s best pairs team of Alex Marshall (skip) and Paul Foster (lead) representing Scotland.

Ryan and Rogic departed for Hong Kong on Friday, November 30, and the

Socceroos played their first match of the tournament against the hosts at the Mong Kok Stadium on Monday, December 3, which they won 1-0. Rogic went on in the 81st minute of the game when Osieck made his second change and replaced Garcia. Rogic’s first touch of the ball was a shot on goal which Hung-Fai had to save. Following their game against Hong Kong, the Socceroos played matches against DPR Korea on

Wednesday, December 5, Guam on Friday, December 7, and Chinese Taipei on Sunday, December 9. The match against DPR Korea saw the Socceroos draw 1-1. Rogic was introduced in the second half to spark an ailing midfield as Australia pushed for a winner, but they lacked impetus for too much of the encounter. A late penalty appeal for a foul on substitute Adam Taggart following play down the left from Rogic and a

Aside from the inclusion of goalkeeper Matt Ryan for Eugene Galekovic, Osieck stuck with an unchanged team for the clash knowing his side needed the win over their main rivals to avoid a goal-difference showdown. The Socceroos then defeated Guam 9-0. Rogic enjoyed the first sight of goal in the fourth minute, drawing a smart save from Guam goalkeeper

The Network has proposed “engineering solutions for holding back the rising sea” rather than “abandoning the lowest lands” in response to climate change. The proposal comes with the release of a report of a forum held by the Network’s Climate Futures group in Woy Woy in August, entitled Sea Level Rise: Looking for Solutions. Network chairman Mr John Asquith said” “Some physical measures to hold back the sea included levee banks, sea walls and a barrier similar to the Thames Barrier. “It is only a matter of time before a storm-flood incident similar to Hurricane Sandy hits the Central Coast as it hit New York. “Flooding in Brisbane Water and other foreshores around the Coast is worst when storm surge and high tides coincide,” he said. “The height of storm surge increases with the intensity of the storms. “A strong east coast low already causes serious flooding on the Central Coast and climate change is making these storms stronger.” The report contains background science on climate change and sea level rise in particular as well as information on how flood insurance is changing and what engineering solutions there are for holding back the rising sea. The forum called for more community involvement in adaptation planning for Climate Change, more consultation by Council with the community, and more action to improve resilience to the impacts of storm attack and flooding. “The level of understanding in the community of the likely impacts of sea level rise and the scientific background of the problem was seen as a serious barrier with education needed at all levels of Government,” said Mr Asquith. “Affected community members on or near the waterfront should not be expected to bear the costs and impacts alone. “We all created this problem. We all need to solve it.” Media Release, 3 Dec 2012 John Asquith, Community Environment Network

Ms O’Neill and Ms Plibersek met with patients in the transitional care unit of the hospital and inspected the progress on the new Woy Woy Rehabilitation Unit. Ms O’Neill said the building works were progressing well and she was looking forward to the new facility being up and running next year. “The local community fought so long and hard to have this service reinstated for the Peninsula,” said Ms O’Neill.

“The building is really starting to take shape and I am pleased that the new facility will be helping patients next year.” The Federal Government is providing $9 million towards the $14 million construction cost of the unit as well as a further $12.7 million for recurrent costs until 2013-14 The project includes a 30 bed Sub Acute Rehabilitation Unit for short stay admissions, multiple courtyard areas for rehabilitation activities, external paths and rehab areas and structure to enable the future expansion either side of the proposed unit in line with the master plan for the hospital. representative group of 17 people from the Gosford Waterfront Action Group (GWAG) attended Parliament House on Thursday, November 22, for the debate on the 10,700 signature Save Gosford Waterfront petition in the Legislative Assembly. Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein presented the petition and made the opening address to the discussion. “I acknowledge that we have one of the most beautiful waterfronts in NSW and I would not want to see that ruined, nor do my colleagues in the State Government or on the Gosford City Council,” said Mr Holstein. “The Gosford Challenge is all about connecting the city and the people with the waterfront so that it can be enjoyed for what it is. “The development of Gosford will happen because it has to happen. “There is no choice in the matter for Gosford Council or for the State Government. “The overwhelming majority of the Gosford population will not accept a do-nothing approach, but it is about doing the right thing. “Although we are experiencing some growing pains I am confident that we have learned from our earlier mistakes. “With a spirit of compromise on all sides in the debate we can move our city forward to become a place where people will want to live and where business will thrive as part of a living city,” said Mr Holstein. Mr Chris Spence and Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber also spoke against the petition. “Their statements clearly indicated they did not realise the real purpose of the petition in that the petitioners wished to see the Gosford Waterfront remain as public land and in the public domain with no limitations placed on public access,” said GWAG representative Mr Col Hodgson. Members speaking in support of the petition were Member for Canterbury Ms Linda Burney, Member for Cessnock Mr Clayton Barr and Member for Balmain Mr Jamie Parker. “These three speakers were all thoroughly prepared showing they were aware the major concern of GWAG has been the loss of public waterfront land to developers,” said Mr Hodgson. “They clearly acknowledged the loss of public access would be very difficult, if not impossible, to reverse.” Mr Parker commented, “One thing is clear, we know that alienation of public land, waterfront land in particular, is always done in the interests of developers, but once that land is lost to the public, it is lost forever”. “Redress at a later stage by demolishing buildings

A result he said neither he nor the community would find comforting. “I promise the people in the gallery that I am absolutely keen to ensure that the Central Coast Development Corporation does not get it wrong, liaises big time with residents in the community, and finds a

way to enliven Gosford, but not to the point of detracting from opportunities to access public space on the water’s edge,” said Mr Hazzard. “A balance must be struck. “I acknowledge the effort made by people in the gallery in travelling to Sydney from Gosford.

New timing system at Mingara

Alexandra Croak visits Coast schools

by Nicky Kelly

by Sven Wright

u s t r a l i a n O l y m p i c gymnast and diver Alexandra Croak visited Brooke Avenue Public School and Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, Berkeley Vale Campus, on Tuesday, December 4.

A

Croak spoke at Brooke Avenue’s assembly and Berkeley Vale’s Sports Presentation Day as part of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge, which promoted the benefits of physical activity among young people.

A Challenge ambassador, Croak also spoke to the students about the importance of physical activity in overall health. The Challenge was launched in 2007 and was open to all NSW public school students. Last year, more than 191,000 students from 1,006 schools took part in the Challenge. Of these schools, 84% received a Gold Award or higher (an average of more than 60 minutes of physical activity per student per day.) This year, more than 220,000 students from 1,059 schools took part.

he Mingara Athletics club recently purchased a new electronic timing system and officially launched it on November 10 at their Saturday club competition.

T

The timing system will allow the club to host professional athletic competitions attracting competitors from around the State. The equipment was able to be purchased with the help

of grants from Wyong Council and Mingara Recreation Club as well as fundraising by the club and its members. The total cost of the equipment was around $25,000. The club has thanked the long hours put in by president Greg Ashe in sourcing the best equipment available, which was purchased from Brooks, a local business on the Coast. The club also thanked outgoing mayor Bob Graham, as well as Chris King from Central Coast Tourism and

Sarah Ferman from Mingara Recreation Club for their input and support. Before electronic timing, volunteers would time each person individually, plus two judges would need to call the places in each event, a job which was often difficult with four to five runners crossing the line at once. A camera is now used to take multiple images per second which provides a clear photo of the finish. The times are then obtained from the system, which is connected to the

starting gun and are provided to the competitors in around two minutes. Mingara Athletics club runs an all ages Saturday morning competition for the summer season from October to March. Track events held are 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m along with field events including long and triple jump, high jump, javelin, shot put and discus. Competition starts at 8:45am.

Fighting Ibis players were determined to have their team name engraved on the trophy for the first time. On the other hand, Pythons were also

determined not to lose a final game twice in a row. It started well for Fighting Ibis when Adam Turner opened the score early in the first period. Mid-way through first period, Josh Hope equalised for the Pythons and took the lead straight after restart with a goal from Gareth Watson. A goal from Mitchel Fiddock before the end of the first period kept Fighting Ibis in the game.

The end of the second period saw both teams again on equal terms following goals from Yannick Sottaz (Pythons) and Mitchel Fiddock. The third period was going to be a thriller with both teams still having equal chances to win the game. At the end, Gareth Watson scored twice to complete his second hattrick in this final round and win the game for Pythons.

4-3. The last few minutes saw both teams attacking and creating a scoring chance. At the end, Lightning managed to keep their small advantage and won the game.

Marlins make come back at home by Michael Ashton

he Central Coast Marlins baseball team hit back after a disappointing loss on the night of Wednesday, December 5, with a commanding 14-4 win against Penrith Panthers at Baseball Park, Springfield on Sunday, December 9.

T

mina Beach PCYC has put together its first gymnastics squad that will compete in state stream competitions after qualifying its routines at sanctioned events.

U

These participants will be the first to represent Umina Beach PCYC all over NSW. The events will feature dynamic displays of agility,

strength, courage and coordination. “The squad is beneficial to the girls by keeping them fit and strong, as well as offering young people the chance to become a leader - trainee coach with the support of gymnastics NSW and PCYC Umina Beach,” said Gymnastics coach Chrissy Vyas. Squad member Leela Cross has also been selected to attend Gymnastics NSW’s

professional development conference in January. “Leela is not just a great gymnast, she has shown great leadership skills and as a leading youth development organisation, we want to mentor and provide as many opportunities for our members to develop into tomorrow’s leaders and citizens as we can, including PCYC’s Blue Star Leadership Program,” said Club manager Allison Carpenter.

Umina Beach PCYC Gymnastics launched a year ago with afterschool recreation gymnastics and has grown to include school holiday workshops, squad, springnastics (trampoline and other spring apparatus), circuit training fun (Tuesday mornings for adults) and in 2013 will include rhythmic and WAG, tumbling, music and movement for babies and parents and school sport.

The Marlins took better advantage of the blustery conditions as they hit three home runs and piled on the runs with a solid offensive display. Marlins’ veteran starting pitcher settled into the game nicely after giving up four runs in the first three innings to throw a complete game keeping the Panthers hitters

off balance. The Panthers opened the scoring in the first inning after taking advantage of some sloppy defence from the home side. The Marlins hit back in the bottom of the first after a walk to Jason Rees who then stole second and third base, he was driven in on a hit from Adam Howe levelling the score. The Marlins took the lead after a two-run home run to Dan Smith, giving the home side a 3-1 lead. The Marlins took the game out of reach after a six-run fourth inning. Scott Harrison and Adam Howe were stand outs with the bat both collecting three hits with a home run each. See Page 10 for the latest standings.

achievement for a girl who is still only 15 years old,” said Green Point Christian College PDHPE coordinator Ms Andrew McGillivray. “She is a fantastic ambassador for the college and a very self-effacing young lady,” he said.

The club had 27 national competitors and 18 national repechage competitors and gained five national placings and 10 national finalists. Georgia Riley placed second in the 11 years while Bec Bennett placed second in the novice ladies. Olivia Wylie placed fourth in the nine years, Melinda Tengstrom placed fourth in the novice ladies and Amy Jones placed fifth in the O17. The club gained three repechage places which

were Simone Bradley who placed first in the 13 years, Isabelle Hyland who placed third in the six years and Cheyenna Gonzalez who placed fourth in the nine years. In the Club’s team competitions held at the State Sports Centre in Homebush, they won four National Championship Grade team first places, three National Team Overall Winners, one National Championship Grade team second place and two National Championship Grade team third places. “We are all so proud of our club’s results and it was a great way to finish off a wonderful year,” said Woy Woy Rec Physie teacher Ms Kristy Stephen. “Woy Woy Rec Physie club has many exciting things planned for the future

which include school holiday workshops with professional dancers, hosting of a workshop at Move Shake Dance which is a charity event raising money for Central Coast Youth Services, performances including dancing in the main arena at the Royal Easter Show, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to dance in Disneyland in 2014. “A lot of hard work and dedication has gone in to making Woy Woy Rec, currently the most successful club on the Central Coast and one of the most successful in the country. “Results aside, fun, friendship, fitness and club spirit is what our club and sport is all about,” said Ms Stephen.

Steve Croft of Booker Bay will compete as an individual while David Smith of Erina will compete as part of Team Terrigal. The Cannibal Royal Challenge-Race for Reason will raise money for the KIDS Foundation and will see former Australian Surf Ironman Champion Nathan Smith and two-time Hawaii

Ironman Champion Chris McCormack take their place at the start line along with more than 110 competitors. The 46km out and back course will begin at Gunnamatta Bay and competitors will paddle 12.5km down river to the Audley Weir followed by a 21km run through the Royal National Park and ending

with a 12.5 km paddle back to the finish line. Event director and Ryde businessman Steve Southwell said the endurance event promised to be a great competition while also raising funds for some Aussie kids doing it tough. “The KIDS Foundation team work to keep all our

kids safe through their national injury prevention school programs but at the same time they run injury recovery programs to assist kids with life-changing injuries such as amputations and burns,” Steve said. “These kids endure recovery programs that are much tougher than any endurance event we can

imagine. “Raising funds to help the KIDS Foundation look after these kids makes this endurance challenge particularly special to all those involved so if you haven’t entered this year, sign up for the November 2013 event.”

The tournament will be held at Berkeley Vale Oval with a total of $7,000 in prize money to be won (this is dependent on 16 teams nominating). Winners will take home $5,000 and runners up $1,000 with semi-finalists receiving $500. The cost to nominate for the event will be $500. The more teams that nominate over the 16 teams will cause the prize money

to increase. “Tooheys have agreed to be the major sponsor of the event and we are hoping that we can get up to 16 teams for this event in memory of Jason Annear who passed away on Saturday, October 6, this year,” said Berkeley Vale Rugby League and Sports Club’s operations manager Mr Shayne Hayne. “Jason was a Berkeley Vale Junior and played all his Junior League for the Berkeley Vale Panthers before moving on to be a member of the Manly Sea Eagles Club where Jason played in the Toyota Cup U20s and the Manly Premier League side. “We are looking for as much support and promotion for this event as possible and there is no better way than to remember a great young Australian then to hold a sevens tournament in his honour on Australia Day,” said Mr Hayne.

brace returned Graham Arnold’s team to the summit of Australia’s top flight and ensured the Burnley born striker took his personal goal scoring tally to nine for the campaign. to seven matches. Central Coast created the better of the opportunities to break the deadlock in the first 45, however, some wasteful finishing combined with some last ditch defending by the Jets ensured the two teams entered the sheds at half time goalless. The best of Central Coast’s chances in the opening stanza fell to attacker McBreen, midfielders Oliver Bozanic and Michael McGlinchey, while stopper Patrick Zwaanswijk found the side netting with a headed effort direct from a corner. It took four minutes of the second 45 for the first goal of the game to arrive from the boot of McBreen. Meeting a crisp Josh Rose cross, McBreen fired a first time right foot shot past Newcastle custodian Matthew Nash. McBreen gave Arnold’s team a two-goal buffer in the 67th minute when he headed home a precise corner played in from the right side by tricky New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey. McBreen, and the 35 year old striker made no mistake in sending the yellow and navy 2-0 up from six yards. Post-match, Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said his side wasn’t getting carried away with the fact they were sitting on top of the table after 10 rounds, and revealed that at the break he had told his players to be more ruthless in attack in the second half. “There are 17 games to go and we don’t even mention it,” Arnold said of his team’s ladder position. “It’s all about next week. “We’ve got Melbourne Heart next Friday, so it’s about trying to play better than we played tonight. “I was disappointed at half time. “We had four good chances (in the first half). “I said to the boys at half time ‘let’s have some killer instinct in front of goal because the game is there for the taking’. “We were the best team on the field. “Our confidence is high. “We’re healthy, we’re fit, we’re a happy group, (and) it’s the senior players who are doing a fantastic job with their leadership roles and off the field.” Arnold also praised his goal scoring machine, Daniel McBreen. “Macca’s been in wonderful form and I think that’s the first ever goal he’s scored against Newcastle. “He’s a Newcastle boy, so he’s delighted tonight.”

Rogic nominated for Young Footballer of the Year

by Central Coast Mariners media

entral Coast Mariners player Tom Rogic has been announced as the second nominee for the 2012-13 NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award.

C

Rogic was voted as the most outstanding U21 player for the month of November following standout performances in four matches. The emerging star received his first national team call-up and debut for the Qantas Socceroos in the team’s 2-1 win over Korea Republic in Hwaseong. Rogic was a standout for the Mariners in four rounds helping the team surge up the Hyundai A-League ladder. In round five, Rogic netted twice for Graham Arnold’s team as they thumped Sydney FC 7-2 at Bluetongue Stadium.

A week later, the midfielder made the assist for Daniel McBreen’s winner as the yellow and navy defeated Wellington Phoenix 1-0 in New Zealand. And in Hyundai A-League round eight, Rogic fired home a late winner as Central Coast secured their first ever win over Brisbane Roar at Bluetongue Stadium. “The past month has not only been great for myself but for the club, the Mariners are sitting top of the table and we’ve had a few good results so hopefully we can keep building on that,” Rogic said. “For myself, getting my first call-up to the national team was an amazing honour, and I feel very privileged and very grateful for the opportunity. “It was great to get my debut against Korea Republic and now to be here for the East Asian Cup qualifiers is even better. “Tuggeranong United in

Canberra, that’s where I grew up playing my first games on Saturday morning when I was a kid and it’s nice to be able to give something back to them.” Rogic is the second nominee for the annual award and is joined by Newcastle Jets’ midfielder Craig Goodwin and four other nominees to be in the running for the grand prize. The overall winner will receive a $10,000 personal investment portfolio, a NAB Private Client Manager to assist with a range of banking and financial services, and the NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award. To aid the development of future football stars NAB have generously donated a $3,000 equipment pack that will go to Tom’s chosen junior football club, Tuggeranong United Football Club in his hometown of Canberra. Council to help with $100,000 for Beckham by Kaitlin Watts

osford Council has unanimously resolved to pledge $100,000 in support of the Central Coast Mariners’ bid to secure the services of David Beckham for a 10 week period.

G

It is anticipated that if Beckham were to come to the Mariners, there would be significant economic and social impacts as well as

national and international exposure for the Central Coast. Cr Bob Ward said the “possibility of Beckham having a cameo role at the Mariners has the whole Central Coast salivating”. Cr Gabby Bowles said the $100,000 investment by Council was measly compared to the benefits the Central Coast would reap if Beckham chose to play for the Mariners.

“It’s a chance to put Gosford on the world stage. “There would be much investment into the local area. “All eyes would be on us so we have the opportunity to put on events. “It would be a chance to get people to come here and see why this place is so fabulous,” said Cr Bowles. Although Cr Craig Doyle supported the motion, he told the Council of his “initial significant reserves”.

“$100,000 is a significant amount of money. “From my point of view, you’re playing with the wrong shaped ball. “But it’s a name, it’s an opportunity and that’s what gets my vote tonight, the opportunity,” said Cr Doyle. The commitment was subject to a similar contribution from Wyong Council which also agreed to sponsor the Central Coast Mariners for $100,000.

Wyoming FC gets $3,000 grant by Natalie Lague

yoming Football Club were cheering extra loud at the Hyundai A-League game on Saturday, December 1, as their club received an extra $1,000 for every goal the Central Coast Mariners scored.

W

The club walked away with a $3,000 grant from Hyundai Motor Company Australia as a result of the game and the Goals for Grassroots program. Wyoming Football Club received an array of match day benefits for being selected, including tickets to the Hyundai A-League game and an on field presentation. The final score was

Central Coast Mariners 2 vs. Adelaide United 1. “We are a successful local community football club that has been established for over 40 years, said Wyoming Football Club representative Kevin Lee. “We will be using the Hyundai grant for coaching development for our grassroots players. “This way we can nurture the young talent who will eventually turn into players that will join our already successful premier league squad, Central Coast Mariners. The Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program was initiated to support the growth of football in Australia by nurturing the game at its grassroots level. “It has been running

for five years and it offers support to local clubs across the country by providing funding in much needed areas. “Already over $300,000 has been donated to worthy grassroots clubs around Australia. “Hyundai and Central Coast Mariners get enormous pleasure seeing the young future football stars down at the match cheering on their local teams, said Central Coast Mariners captain John Hutchinson. “The future and the heart of the game are here with the kids, and we are delighted to be able to play a part in encouraging and nurturing the community teams.

Mariners’ AFC draw announced

by Central Coast Mariners media

he Central Coast Mariners have been pooled alongside Chinese Super League outfit Guizhou Renhe, K-League side Suwon Bluewings and the yet to be determined Japanese Emperor’s Cup winner for the Group Stage of the 2013 AFC Champions League.

T

The draw for the 2013 version of Asia’s premier club competition was held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with the Mariners the only Hyundai A-League side directly entering the round-robin phase of the prestigious tournament. Graham Arnold’s team will need to finish in the top two of Group H if they are to achieve their stated goal of progressing to the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League for the first time in the Club’s history

next year. Speaking immediately following the draw, Arnold said that there were no easy groups in continental competitions as celebrated as the AFC Champions League, and underlined the Mariners’ desire to achieve success in the tournament next year. “The experience of playing in the 2012 AFC Champions League has us better equipped to deal with the demands of the tournament next year,

Smo king Dra go n

Arnold said. “All the teams in the AFC Champions League are from tough competitions, and it will be a great test for our players to see if we can emerge from Group H. “Clubs in China, Korea and Japan have big budgets and big squads, but having dealt with the dual demands of the Hyundai A-League Finals Series and the AFC Champions League last year, we believe we can perform strongly in Asia. “We are looking forward to the challenge, and our goal is to make the second round of the competition, said Arnold. Guizhou Renhe qualified for the 2013 AFC Champions League via their fourth place finish in the 2012 Chinese

Super League. Suwon Bluewings also finished fourth in their domestic competition, the K-League. Next year will mark the Mariners’ third participation in the AFC Champions League. The Club made its debut appearance in the tournament in 2009 before representing Australia again in Asia’s top Club competition this year. This season Central Coast Mariners recorded its first win in the competition, a 5-1 triumph over China’s Tianjin Teda on AFC Champions League Matchday five. The Mariners also recorded credible home draws with J-League outfit

Nagoya Grampus and K-League club Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, and a determined 0-0 away stalemate with Tianjin Teda. Central Coast Mariners will be joined by Hyundai A-League rivals, Brisbane Roar, in the Group Stages of the 2013 AFC Champions League should Rado Vidosic’s men defeat Thai FA Cup winners Buriram United in the playoff round. 2013 AFC Champions League Group H Central Coast Mariners FC – Australia Guizhou Renhe – China Suwon Bluewings – Korea Republic Emperor’s Cup Winner – Japan (decided on January 1)

Mariners win top of the table clash by Central Coast Mariners media

entral Coast Mariners claimed the top spot on the Hyundai A-League ladder following a 2-1 victory over Adelaide United in the round nine clash at a hot and humid Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday, December 1.

C

Goals from consistent leftback Josh Rose and British import Nick Montgomery ensured Central Coast continued on its four match winning streak at Gosford. The hosts started the game brightly and had a few early chances to take the lead. New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey found space behind the Reds’ defence, and shot smartly at goal, however, young custodian Paul Izzo did well to drop low to his left and save. McGlinchey was back in the thick of the action not long after as he delivered a pass to fellow midfielder Oliver Bozanic. Unfortunately for Graham Arnold’s men, Bozanic’s ambitious effort from range flew well over the woodwork. The Reds started to press and took the lead 17 minutes in as Bruce Djite opened the scoring for the visitors. After a neat pass from Zenon Caravella, Djite fired a powerful strike from outside the box, sending the ball past Central Coast gloveman Justin Pasfield. The Mariners had the opportunity to level proceedings shortly after as McGlinchey once again

found Bozanic. Curling a shot at goal from the edge of the area, Bozanic’s strike flew just over the woodwork. John Kosmina’s men were looking to add to the scoreboard but young midfielder Evan Kostopoulos failed to trouble Pasfield as his long-range effort sailed over the woodwork. Just before the break, marauding defender Rose thundered a powerful effort into the back of the net from range, restoring parity to the clash. The Mariners began the brighter of the two teams after the half-time break, and had a delightful opportunity to double their advantage in the 50th minute as young gun Bernie Ibini blasted his strike over the bar from close range. The yellow and navy continued to dominate in the second stanza and were rewarded for their determined display just 14 minutes from time when Montgomery smashed his shot past Izzo from just inside the area. Some good build up play involving Daniel McBreen and substitute Mitchell Duke opened the chance for Montgomery, who made no mistake in blasting home what would prove to be the winner. Eager not to head home empty handed, Adelaide pushed forward and came close to finding an equaliser through Osama Malik. Malik attempted to caress a shot past Pasfield from long range, but pushed his effort just wide. The Mariners continued

to control the tempo as the clock wound down in the dying stages of the top-ofthe-table test. Montgomery’s first strike for the Mariners combined with Rose’s sixth Hyundai A-League goal in the yellow and navy proved to be enough for the home team to replace their round nine rivals atop the competition ladder. Post-match, Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said he knew that despite the stifling conditions, his team would give him yet another determined performance. “I’ve said it many times

before but it is such a joy to work with these guys because you know that they are going to go out there and give everything they’ve got,” Arnold said. “We have to be honest and say that we were very sloppy in the final third, and on many occasions we had three-v-two or three-v-one opportunities and we didn’t execute it properly like we have been in the first eight rounds. “(But) I put that down to the heat factor. “The first thing that goes when you’re fatigued and tired is your brain, and decision-making.”

Arnold also had praise for match-winner Montgomery. “Monty is fitting in very well with (John) Hutchinson beside him. “The experience that Hutch and Monty give in front of two youngsters in Zac Anderson and Trent Sainsbury is invaluable. “But I am very happy with the whole team.” Central Coast Mariners 2 (Rose 45, Montgomery 76’) Adelaide United 1 (Djite 17’) Bluetongue Stadium, Gosford Central Coast Mariners: 20. Wyong Council mayor Cr Doug Eaton said he was “delighted” that work had begun on the development following two years of liaison between Wyong Council and Woolworths. “The focus of this Council is on economic development and creating jobs for our residents and this development ticks every box. “Besides the 100 jobs during construction, there will be in excess of 150 retail related jobs upon completion. “The development also aligns with the North Wyong Structure Plan, which is the State Government’s regional strategy identifying the northern area of our Shire and will accommodate the majority of our region’s new greenfield development to 2031. “This new shopping centre will not only serve existing residents, but caters for planned growth in the area,” said Cr Eaton. The construction period for the new centre, located on the corner of Pacific Highway and Tall Timbers Rd, is expected to be around 12 months.

All issues have now been resolved and work is underway on delivering residents a brand new shopping centre and retail precinct. “We have worked hard as a Council with Woolworths to ensure we could do everything we can to get to this stage, when the soil could finally be turned for the start of construction,” Cr Eaton said. “By the end of next year, jobs will be created for people seeking full time and part time work as well as apprentices, and casual staff.” The official sod turning was attended by Member for Swansea Mr Garry Edwards, Cr Greg Best, Woolworths development manager Mr Lindsay Rowles, Lake Munmorah Precinct president Mr Stuart Durie and Mainbrace Builders business development director Mr Michael Witts. Council in negotiations with developer over proposed $500M Chinese Theme Park yong Council received an updated report on the status of the proposed site for a Chinese Cultural Theme Park on Warren Rd, Warnervale, at its ordinary meeting of Wednesday, November 19.

W

Chinese Theme Park representative Ms Amanda Lee addressed the meeting and explained how the venue would provide jobs for residents of Wyong Shire and would be a boost for the local economy. Ms Lee said while the majority of the revenue for the theme park would come from private proprietors, the Chinese Government was supportive of their plan to construct in Warnervale. It was resolved at the meeting that the mayor and general manager urgently negotiate with Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd with the objective of achieving an agreement for sale of the proposed site where Council’s risks and liabilities would be minimised and where a satisfactory sale price was offered by the purchaser. Council has received a number of visits and documents from Chinese delegates during the past two years, with many influential businessmen and Government officials indicating support for the project. All support is dependent upon the issue of land tenure and zoning issues

being resolved between Council and Australia Theme Park Pty. The site, at Lot 3 Warren Rd, Warnervale, has a total area of 179.277 Ha. The site includes Warnervale Airport and a portion of Porters Creek wetland. The village would be a working village with accommodation, shops, restaurants, galleries and tourist accommodation. The proposal is expected to cost in the vicinity of $500 million making it one of the largest private sector developments in Wyong Shire and the Central Coast. In March last year Council considered a Mayoral Minute in relation to the proposal from Australia China Cultural Foundation Incorporated (ACCFI) to develop a Chinese Theme Park on Council owned land at Warnervale. Council resolved among others matters to enter into a co-operation agreement to continue to progress the project. This agreement was formally entered into on Monday, August 15, 2011 with mayor Cr Doug Eaton and the President of ACCFI, Mr Bruce Zhong signing the

We

agreement. The terms of the agreement identified that Council grant ACCFI a non-exclusive licence to enter the land for the sole purpose of carrying out investigatory works to support the development of the project. The period of the agreement was from Friday, July 1, 2011, to Thursday, June 30, 2012, with the agreement having now lapsed. During the period of the agreement ACCFI engaged consultants Cardno to undertake a desktop review of environment, engineering and planning constraints with regard to the proposed development. The review identified that the current zoning of the property as Industrial would not permit all of their proposed uses, however, this matter could be addressed by making a submission to rezone the land to permit the proposed land use through the exhibition period of LEP 2012. The cost of this review undertaken by Cardno is reported to be in the vicinity of $250,000. At a councillor briefing session held in June of this year, an update of the current situation was presented

At its ordinary Council meeting on Wednesday, November 28, Council approved the sale of 15.7 hectares of land at Warnervale to the Australian Chinese Theme Park Pty Ltd (ACTP). Council sold the land for $10 million for the purpose of constructing the $500 million Theme Park. Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton signed the agreement to sell the land in front of the Director Consular who was representing the Chinese Consular General Mr Aimin Fu and representatives of the ACTP at the Shanghai Stories Chinese Restaurant in Chatswood. Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber was also in attendance. “This is undoubtedly one of the most momentous occasions in the history of this Council, and the Central Coast,” mayor Cr Eaton said. “What this proposal will do is turn the Wyong

Mr Aimin Fu, Cr Doug Eaton and Mr Bruce Zhong Shire into a tourist mecca and bring millions of dollars’ worth of tourism into the area, which will have a flow on effect to the entire region’s economy. “Outside the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, this has the potential to be among the biggest tourist attractions in the State. “Council is genuinely excited by this project and personally, I cannot

We

wait for construction to officially start. “By selling this land, we have not only made a significant profit, but we have set in place a unique and, in time, iconic tourist venture that will benefit the entire Central Coast. “This is indeed a very historic occasion and I congratulate the Council staff and councillors for their support and enthusiasm towards this

project. “I would also like to thank the ACTP for their commitment towards getting this off the ground and realising Wyong Shire was the best area in the country to accommodate such a development. “They are the ones investing the money, Council has merely supported them,” said mayor Cr Eaton. It is anticipated that

construction on the Theme Park will start in 2015, and the whole project will be completed by 2020. Upon completion, the Theme Park is expected to provide between 1500 and 2000 jobs. The Park will have seven sections comprising China City Gate entrance, Tang and Song Academy, Water Towns in South China, Wyong Theatre, Panda Paradise, Royal

Villa and a Thanksgiving Temple ACTP chairman Mr Bruce Zhong said he was delighted the land had been secured. “This is just the beginning and we will now work hard to start detailed planning work,” said Mr Zhong. “It is going to be a unique $500 million tourist attraction, employing more than a thousand people and bringing economic prosperity to Wyong Shire. “We have received great support from the beginning from the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. “They twice sent a delegation to visit Wyong and the land. “I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Wyong Shire Council, mayor Doug Eaton, all the councillors and staff. “Without Council’s great help and support, we wouldn’t have achieved this and I hope we can continue to work closely for the project and for Wyong Shire’s future prosperity,” said Mr Zhong. he first annual meeting of the Central Coast Chapter of Men of Football was held at the Mingara Recreation Club on Wednesday, November 28.

T

he Mariners Youth team returned to winning form with a comprehensive 3-0 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, December 2, at the Mariners Centre for Excellence in Tuggerah.

T

The game started at a fast pace and Western Sydney consistently put pressure on the Mariners’ goal. The first real chance of the match came when Western’s Tarek Elrich made a run through the Mariners defence, but his goal bound shot was well deflected by goalkeeper David Bradasevic. The Mariners started to get more into the game and won a corner down the right hand side. Adriano Pellegrino’s corner kick found the head of Adam Kwasnik and a welldirected header opened the score. Mariners kept pressing and added to their score when Pellegrino fired a shot from 20 metres that left West’s goalie Thomas Manos stranded. Half time came without addition to the score and Mariners’ coach John McLafferty substituted Mitchell Duke and Pellegrino who had taken part in the A-League game the previous night. Western Sydney attacked from the restart with Elrich and former Mariners’ player Kwabena Appiah-Kubi, causing problems for the Mariners defence, but all to no avail. The game started to flow up and down the pitch with both sides making scoring opportunities which all went astray. With about 10 minutes of play remaining, Mariners’ Brent Griffiths was shown a red card for bad tackle on Jayden Koulizakis in the Western Sydney penalty area. With only 10 men, Mariners pressed on and with four minutes remaining, substitute Patrick Dixon received the ball in the Wests penalty area, neatly turned his defender and fired a powerful left foot shot high into the corner of the net for a third Mariners’ goal. McLafferty said he was elated that his team had got back into winning ways but was more pleased with the manner of the win. “Our plan today was to convert the chances that we have been missing over the past few weeks,” said McLafferty.

“Although we have been winning, we have missed many chances, or not shooting when we have got into good positions. “We are also trying to give the younger players more game time, after all, the real aim of the Youth League is the development of young players, and as can be seen with the first grade team, we have been very successful in this regard,” said McLafferty. EPL to bid for Ryan

Football

by Football Federation Australia

by Central Coast Mariners media

o o t b a l l Fe d e r at i o n Australia (FFA) has secured new broadcast arrangements which will provide unprecedented coverage of football in Australia for existing and potential fans.

F

entral Coast Mariners are bracing themselves to lose star goalkeeper Matt Ryan in the January window, with English Premier League hopefuls Hull City tabling a lucrative offer the club will find hard to refuse.

C

Ryan, 20, returned from South Korea on Thursday, November 15, where he was part of an experimental Qantas Socceroos squad which produced a memorable win in the friendly international in Hwaseong. Now in his third season in the Hyundai A-League, he has been catching the attention of overseas clubs since winning the Goalkeeper of the Year award last season. Ryan, who has a British passport, trialled with EPL sides Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion

just before the start of the season, and has now caught the eye of the ‘Tigers’, who are currently fourth in the Championship table and well on course for a return to the EPL after three seasons in the second-tier. Ryan is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Mariners are resigned to losing their young custodian sooner or later. Hull currently has Ben Amos, who is on loan from Manchester United, between the posts, but manager Steve Bruce said he was keen to secure Ryan for the promotion chase. It’s believed Hull have offered Ryan, who now has 61 A-League appearances behind him, a lucrative three-year contract, while the Mariners can expect to receive a substantial transfer fee. Having heard the news, the Mariners were quick to respond to the claims that

the Championship side had tabled a substantial offer for the services of Ryan. Central Coast Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull confirmed that negotiations with Hull were already taking place. “It is disappointing that these private commercial discussions are in the public arena, but I can confirm Hull City are one of a number of clubs to have expressed an interest in signing Mathew Ryan in January. “Hull have tabled an offer for Mat as a result of his good form in the Hyundai A-League, selection for the Qantas Socceroos as well as his undoubted potential. “Negotiations with Hull are still at an early stage however we will continue to talk with them and several other clubs over the coming weeks in order to arrive at the best possible outcome for Central Coast Mariners FC and Mathew.

FFA announced, on Monday, November 19, that FOX SPORTS, Foxtel and SBS would provide Australian viewers with comprehensive, worldclass coverage on multiple platforms, including subscription TV, free-toair TV, internet and digital devices from July 1, next year. The agreement is for a period of four years. The new broadcast arrangements will deliver a total economic value of $160 million to Australian football, and crucially provide each Hyundai A-League Club,

ork has started in preparation for the upgrade of the Central Coast Highway at West Gosford.

“An upgrade of this scale requires detailed planning and a staged approach,â€? said Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein. “Before the road can be built, many of the utilities need to be relocated. "Brisbane Water Dr and Manns Rd are vital links between Gosford, Woy Woy and Narara providing access to railway stations, local businesses and retail centres, the Central Coast Highway and the F3 Freeway. "Access to all residential and commercial properties needs to be maintained along with trafďŹ c ow for the 70,000 vehicles which use the intersection each day. “Work has started on building a local access road linking Ferguson Close and Kulara Ave. "This will enable BelHilton Pde to be closed and a road between Dyer Crescent and Grieve Close to be built to provide local access during the project. “Storm water drainage improvements will be carried out in advance of major work,â€? Mr Holstein said. Other preliminary works will include demolition of buildings, clearing of the site and the relocation of utilities such as power. The project itself will

involve the widening and realigning of Brisbane Water Dr and Manns Rd between Kalura Ave in the south and Stockyard Place in the north as well as the widening of the Central Coast Highway between the lower end of Kariong Hill and just west of Yallambee Ave. The project is expected to improve safety, reduce congestion and delays, and improve accessibility for all road users. A system of shared pedestrian-cycle paths on both sides of the main roads will connect to existing paths. Bus stops will be in indented bays as close as possible to pedestrian crossings. The project is expected to accommodate trafďŹ c growth for more than 20 years. Following community input RMS selected a ground level cross intersection, including a link between Grieve Close and Jusfrute Dr, as the preferred option in 2010. RMS ďŹ nalised an environmental assessment to proceed to detailed development and construction in December 2010. Through this further development work, RMS undertook detailed

Local members speak against Landing petition representative group of 17 people from the Gosford Waterfront Action Group (GWAG) attended Parliament House on Thursday, November 22, for the debate on the 10,700 signature Save Gosford Waterfront petition in the Legislative Assembly.

A

Member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein presented the petition and made the opening address to the discussion. “I acknowledge that we have one of the most beautiful waterfronts in NSW and I would not want to see that ruined, nor do my colleagues in the State Government or on the Gosford City Council,â€? said Mr Holstein. “Although we are experiencing some growing pains I am conďŹ dent that we have learned from our earlier mistakes. “With a spirit of compromise on all sides in the debate we can move our city forward to become a place where people will want to live and where business will thrive as part of a living city,â€? said Mr Holstein. Member for The Entrance

Mr Chris Spence and Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber also spoke against the petition. “Their statements clearly indicated they did not realise the real purpose of the petition in that the petitioners wished to see the Gosford Waterfront remain as public land and in the public domain with no limitations placed on public access,â€? said GWAG representative Mr Col Hodgson. Members speaking in support of the petition were Member for Canterbury Ms Linda Burney, Member for Cessnock Mr Clayton Barr and Member for Balmain Mr Jamie Parker. “These three speakers were all thoroughly prepared showing they were aware the major concern of GWAG has been the loss of public waterfront land to developers,â€? said Mr Hodgson. “They clearly acknowledged the loss of public access would be very difďŹ cult, if not impossible, to reverse.â€? Mr Parker commented, “One thing is clear, we know that alienation of public land, waterfront land in particular, is always done in the interests of developers, but once that land is lost to the public, it is lost foreverâ€?. “Redress at a later stage by demolishing buildings

and reopening spaces is next to impossible.â€? Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Mr Brad Hazzard was the ďŹ nal member to speak. In his speech, he expressed his concern that the buildings in stages two and three would alienate the foreshore.

A result he said neither he nor the community would ďŹ nd comforting. “I promise the people in the gallery that I am absolutely keen to ensure that the Central Coast Development Corporation does not get it wrong, liaises big time with residents in the community, and ďŹ nds a

whole team at FFA for their effort in securing a wonderful broadcast deal for football in Australia, Turnbull said. “FOX SPORTS have been wonderful for the game and will be throughout the new contract. “However, it is especially good that the code will now be on free-to-air TV. “This will only grow the sport further and ultimately benefit everyone with a stake in the game. “The expectation is that the new TV contract will cover 100% of the salary cap, which will go some way to alleviating the financial losses incurred by Club owners since the establishment of the Hyundai A-League. “We at the Mariners welcome this announcement as we strive to increase the sustainability of our Club, grow our fan base, deliver improved engagement to our supporters and, first and foremost, attain success on the football pitch, he said.

including the Central Coast Mariners, along with FFA the opportunity to implement its strategic plans for the game. Under the terms of the new agreement, SBS will show one LIVE Hyundai A-League match per week on a Friday night, while existing host broadcaster FOX SPORTS will continue to broadcast every Hyundai A-League game LIVE. Central Coast Mariners fans will also be able to enjoy the excitement of the Hyundai A-League Finals Series on free-toair television, with SBS broadcasting every Finals Series fixture on a one-hour delay. Mariners chairman Mr Peter Turnbull congratulated FFA, FOX SPORTS, Foxtel, and SBS on what is a monumental day for football in Australia. “This is a fantastic result and I would like to congratulate FFA Chairman Mr Frank Lowy, former CEO Mr Ben Buckley, and the

Coast bowlers scoop state awards

by Doug Rose

owls NSW held its inaugural Volunteer Awards on Thursday, November 29, which saw Central Coast bowlers win three of the six awards.

B

Outstanding Individual Volunteer Innovation was won by Geoff Graham of Bateau Bay Bowling Club, Coach of the Year by John Roberts of Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club, and Volunteer Club Administrator of the year was won by Jim McCreadie of Wamberal Bowling Club. Geoff Graham won his award for his work as website manager and technology advisor of Bowls Central Coast. Among Geoff’s innovations is an automated computer system that assists Clubs to select players and produce score cards and result sheets for inter club competitions. Geoff has also adapted the system to assist clubs with tournaments and social events.

Additionally, Geoff created the new Bowls Central Coast website and a big screen result system used at major events with live updates to the website every 20 minutes. John Roberts has an outstanding record as a coach and is the Bowls Central Coast U18 coach. This year, players from his Ettalong club won almost every Bowls Central Coast championship. In particular, the current Bowls Central Coast Singles Champion, 19 year old Harley McDonald, has been coached by John since before his teens. John’s Club has been increasing in the number of bowlers which can be attributed to the positive coaching program that John leads at Ettalong. Jim McCreadie is the ‘go-to man’ at his Wamberal Bowling Club. He has served on most official positions at the Club, including president and always has his hand up to assist. The presentation

Jim McCreadie, Margaret McCreadie, Shirley Graham and Geoff Graham after the award presentations ceremony was attended by the NSW Minister of Sport Mr Graham Annesley as well as the newly appointed president of Bowls Australia, Des Skinner. The president and

Board of Bowls NSW and most Sate Councillors also attended the presentation as did Geoff’s wife Shirley and Jim’s wife Margaret. As with most sports, bowls would not exist

without its many volunteers. With 600 bowling clubs throughout NSW, it is estimated that there are around 12,000 volunteers working on committees, or as umpires, coaches,

selectors, attending to barbecues or assisting greenkeepers. For Geoff, John and Jim to be declared the best of all these volunteers is quite an achievement.

Ms Webber was born in 1919, and served as a nurse in New Guinea in World War II. She joined Woy Woy Women’s Bowling Club on January 1, 1974, and continued as a member until her death. On the August 21, 2003, she was invited to be Club Patron and held the position for the following nine years. Woy Woy Women’s Bowling Club publicity officer Ms Miriam Cotton said Ms Webber was “always friendly, loyal and generous”. “There would be a smile and a kiss for members as she attended the Club each week. “For years, she sold raffle tickets on a Saturday

morning at the Club. “Her generosity was always done very quietly as every Charity Day, Gala Day and Carnival, Lil donated a money tree as a raffle, a beautiful pot plant with $50 pinned to its leaves. “At Christmas, there was always a ham from her to raffle. “The second last Thursday of the bowling year was set aside as Patron’s Day for which Lil

paid for the luncheon and donated the money tree,” said Ms Cotton. The luncheon went ahead on Thursday, November 6, as a Memorial Day for Ms Webber. “Our sincere sympathy goes to her husband Reg and their family. “The Club has lost a true friend, a long term member and a loving Patron who will be sadly missed,” said Ms Cotton.

Students perform at Wagstaffe Six woodwind students from the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music performed for an audience at Wagstaffe Hall on Sunday, October 28. Each year the Bouddi Society donates a junior and senior woodwind scholarship to the Conservatorium. The winner of the senior award was Alyse Faith who played the first movement of Christoph van Gluck’s concerto in G for flute and piano to prolonged applause with her conservatorium tutor Lyn Brislan. Winner of the junior award was Ellora Srivatsava who played Mozart’s Andante in C Major, K315. The Conservatorium also

Community bank to pay first dividend Ettalong Beach Community Bank has announced its first dividend to shareholders, through its franchise holding company Ettalong Beach Financial Services Limited. company chairman Mr Mick Gage thanked loyal shareholders at the company’s annual meeting on Thursday, November 8, for their patience as the branch dealt with its start-up phase and then the effects of the global financial crisis on the financial community. Mr Gage said that without the support of the community who rallied together and provided the capital needed, Ettalong Beach would have been without a bank. “History shows that when basic services are not available in small

communities the follow on effect to other businesses can be crushing,” said Mr Gage. In announcing a 2.5 cents per share dividend to be paid in December, Mr Gage noted that although a small dividend, it was in line with the Community Bank’s charter and allowed the board of directors to manage the company’s financial position to the benefit of all stakeholders. “With increased business levels and community support, it is hoped that dividend payments will be able to be made annually” said Mr Gage. Other finalists were Taryn Shaw, Luca Kovak and Jasper Wand. Central Coast Conservatorium principal Mr Patrick Brennan compered the event and tutors David Dallinger and Patrick Brislan assisted him in the judging of the winners. Jobs lost as hospital closes heart unit Brisbane Waters Private Hospital has closed its Cardiac Care Unit and Angiography suite after cardiologists decided to take their work to North Gosford Private Hospital. Forty employees have lost their jobs as a result. Their positions were made redundant on Tuesday, November 6. Brisbane Waters Private Hospital general manager Ms Annette Czerkesow said the changes were made following a strategic review, after a decision by interventional cardiologists to consolidate their work at North Gosford Private Hospital. “This decision was not easy, and was only reached after all other possible alternatives had been explored,” said Ms Czerkesow.

She said that staff who were affected by the redundancies were offered support and assistance to plan for the future. Ms Czerkesow said that where possible, redeployment options would be explored for all staff whose jobs had been impacted by the changes. “Brisbane Waters Private Hospital has a long history on the Central Coast, where we have provided quality care since 1978. “This month Brisbane Waters Private Hospital was recognised by HCF, Australia’s largest not for profit health insurer, as being in the top two hospitals across the country in terms of patient satisfaction in relation to the hospital and the medical team. “We are very proud of this achievement and this announcement does not change our commitment to our patients

and our community. “Our specialists will continue to offer a range of surgical specialties including, general surgery, obesity services, orthopaedics, ENT, plastic surgery, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, dental, vascular surgery and other day surgery. “Complementing these surgical services are geriatric and medical care. “Our High Dependency Unit will continue to provide excellent monitoring and specialist nursing care and the hospital has in place 24-hour medical coverage to support surgical and medical patients. “We also have the only dedicated mental health unit on the Central Coast with 30 beds,” said Ms Czerkesow. Life savers teach beach safety Eight Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club life savers participated in an education program with Surf Lifesaving NSW called Beach to Bush from Monday, November 5, to Friday, November 9. The aim of the program was to promote safety to people who visited beaches. Statistics showed that people who live 50km or more away from the Coast account for half of all drownings and that 80 per cent of problems are caused by rips, according to Ocean Beach club publicity officer Ms Louise Lambeth. Beach to Bush teaches primary school children in an interactive and fun way how to recognise

dangers at the beach and how to stay safe. The Central Coast teams, which included Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club members Richard and Mary Grimmond, Peter and Louise Lambeth and their 12-yearold daughter Isobel and Toni and Anthony Jones, went as far away as Griffith, ACT and the Blue Mountains where they gave 13 presentations in the week. The children learnt about sun safety, safe places to swim, to swim with a friend, how to signal for help, what makes waves, rips, rescue methods, the creatures of the sea and how to treat injuries and where to go to seek help. A council environmental health officer attended the site to investigate and issued a direction to the owner to ensure all damaged and exposed asbestos was covered or sealed and to have a licensed asbestos contractor remove all loose, damaged and exposed asbestos. The tenant’s mother, Ms Genevieve Rose, told Peninsula News that her brother, a builder, had found asbestos scattered around the house during the renovations. She said: “There were no safety precautions taken, no safety wear or ventilation mask, no safety gloves and no warning to anyone who entered the property.” She said that she called the real estate agent to warn them. The council’s environmental health co-ordinator Mr Shannon McKiernan said: “If the owner doesn’t comply with the notice of intent, an order will be served

requiring them to do the work. “If they still don’t comply, Council will undertake the works at the owner’s expense.” He said the council also had the option to proceed with court action. The notice gave the owner seven days to secure the site and to engage an appropriately licensed contractor. It allowed additional time for the contractor to complete the work. Mr McKiernan said a person could only do their own renovating work where the area of asbestos was under 10 square metres. As a result of the incident, the council has announced it will partner with the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute as part of a week-long national campaign to highlight the dangers of asbestos related diseases caused by inhaling asbestos fibres while renovating or maintaining homes. “Don’t play Renovation Roulette” is the message that Gosford Council, the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute and the Asbestos Education Committee is sending to residents and ratepayers during national Asbestos Awareness Week which runs from November 26 to 30.

Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna said Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestosrelated diseases in the world. This was because Australia has been ranked among the top consumers of asbestos cement products per capita. “With almost every home built or renovated before the mid 1980s likely to contain asbestos in one form or another; the third wave of people affected by mesothelioma, one of the asbestos-related diseases, has recently become evident and will continue to rise unless we all start taking seriously the dangers of asbestos when renovating or maintaining our homes,” said mayor Cr McKinna. In the past, those affected by asbestos related diseases were exposed to raw fibres in the mining and manufacturing process (first wave), followed by workers who used asbestos products in the workplace (second wave). The third wave of asbestosrelated diseases predominantly affect people exposed to fibres during home renovations and maintenance specifically handymen and DIYers as well as family members present at the time.

“With the number of people diagnosed with mesothelioma as a direct result of exposure to asbestos during home renovations continuing to rise, it’s vital that residents take the warnings seriously to protect themselves and their families,” mayor Cr McKinna said. The national campaign, supported by the Asbestos Education Committee, aims to change the way Australian’s think about how they manage asbestos in and around the home. Asbestos Education Committee chair Mr Peter Dunphy said whether a home is constructed of brick, fibro and weatherboard or has exterior cladding, asbestos can be found almost everywhere in and around homes built or renovated before the mid 80s. “Most people can’t tell whether building materials contain asbestos just by looking at them. “Asbestos can be under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings, eaves, garages, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, outdoor toilets and backyard sheds, it could be anywhere.

“Before commencing any home maintenance or renovation work, homeowners and renovators, particularly young couples and first home buyers excited about renovating their homes, need to learn about where they might find asbestos in the home and how best to manage it so they can protect themselves and their families from asbestos fibres. “We want them to start thinking smart and safe by visiting asbestosawareness.com.au for information on managing asbestos in and around the home because it’s not worth the risk,” Mr Dunphy said. During Asbestos Awareness Week, Australians are also invited to hold a Blue Lamington Drive to help raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos when renovating and vital funds to support the Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation and the Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia. The barrier across the Thames Estuary in England, which at over 500m long is the

world’s second largest movable flood barrier, cost more than 500 million pounds to build. “All these measures cost money and could reduce our enjoyment of the waterfront but it was felt that the huge value of waterfront property in the region would justify spending on defence rather than simply abandoning the lowest lands,” he said. Mr Asquith said the report detailed the outcomes of the forum and outlined community concerns and issues to be raised with local politicians. “The report covers community opinion on how to adapt to rising sea level and the threat of storm flooding.” Mr Asquith said all storms were strengthened by the increased atmospheric moisture and heat energy in the climate system. “Storms of today are likely to be stronger than those of 30 years ago.

Foreshore erosion

Health Minister visits hospital Federal Minister for Health Ms Tanya Plibersek and Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill visited Woy Woy Hospital on Friday, November 23, as part of the Minister’s visit to the Central Coast.

Fellow Central Coast competitor Macy Callaghan also stood out, winning the U12 board and Ironperson events and coming second in the swim. “My very first Interbranch

Jake Foster creates Summer poses risk Surf Search for athletes phone app

by Amanda Boshier

by Jake Foster

niversity of N e wc a s t l e student Jake Foster of Empire Bay has created a mobile phone application that provides easily accessible

U

information about surfing locations. Being a local surfer and photographer, Jake said he often likes to “check out surf conditions in his favourite spots”. Surf Search provides a detailed report of major surfing locations throughout Australia. It provides a collection of surfing breaks showing the breaks’ ideal conditions including wave type and direction, wind, swell direction and tide details. There is also a Locate Break function which locates

the five nearest surfing locations and provides directions. “This is an ideal app for surfing and travelling, as you are able to find breaks throughout Australia,” said Jake. The months of research and development that have gone into this app, have been in addition to the 21 year old’s teaching - architecture studies at university. The Surf Search app is now available for download.

ith summer here, those who are active need to prepare for hot weather conditions or risk heat injury, warns Sports Medicine Australia.

Being active in hot or humid conditions can lead to dehydration, heat illness and sometimes the more serious consequence of heat stroke. Sports physician and Sports Medicine Australia spokesperson Dr David Bolzonello said that while physical activity is important for overall health, in the hotter months certain precautions need to be taken to avoid heat injuries. “Heat illness is a serious matter that can result in the life-threatening condition of heat stroke, if left untreated. “While people need to exercise regularly to stay healthy, they should take certain precautions if exercising in a hot or humid environment,” said Dr Bolzonello. “Those exercising need to know what can contribute to heat illness, such as high air temperature, heavy clothing, high humidity, lack of fitness and high exercise intensity. “They should also know the symptoms of heat illness - light-headedness, nausea, headache, confusion, not sweating, and aggressive or irrational behaviour. “Knowing how to prepare for heat illness, what causes it and what to look out for will help people avoid it,” said Dr

Bolzonello. Children are at a greater risk as their bodies respond less efficiently to heat, feel hotter and have greater difficulty getting rid of heat from their body. Sports Medicine Australia offers the following summer safety tips: Stay hydrated by drinking water before, during and after exercise. Schedule activity to avoid the hottest part of the day. Take rest breaks, in the shade if possible. Wear light coloured, lightweight and loose fitting clothing that allows easy evaporation of sweat from the skin. Wear sunglasses, 30 plus sunscreen and a hat. Reduce the duration and intensity of a warm up to minimise an increase in

body heat and temperature. Do not take part in strenuous activity if you have recently experienced a high temperature, infection, diarrhoea or vomiting. If you have a medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, a heart problem, epilepsy or obesity, are taking medication, or are pregnant; you may experience difficulties exercising in the heat. If unsure you should seek advice from a sports medicine professional. Persons suffering from heat illness can recover rapidly with assistance – laying down in a cool place, removing excess clothing, wetting skin or using ice packs, and drinking cool water, however if symptoms do not improve, seek medical assistance.
