$47 million regional sport funding he NSW State Gover nment has committed $47 million to regional sports funding, $3 million of which has been allocated to the upgrading of Pluim Park at Lisarow and $3 million for Central Coast Bears Headquarters.
T
The confirmation was made by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley who encouraged local councils and sports bodies to take advantage of the opportunity to secure NSW Government funding. “As a former official, I understand the importance of supporting the behindthe-scenes participants who make sport possible,” said Mr Annesley, who, as a former NRL Chief Operating Officer, is keen to improve facilities and nurture current and future champions. The $3 million commitment had been reported in Grandstand as an election promise by the NSW Liberals and Nationals while still in Opposition. A former rugby league referee, Mr Annesley has decades of industry experience
combined with a solid corporate background. “I am honoured to use my lifelong experience in the sports sector to serve the needs of the whole of the State’s sporting community,” he said. “The O’Farrell Government is dedicated to developing sport and recreation at all levels throughout NSW. After first picking up the whistle at age 13, Mr Annesley went on to referee more than 200 first-grade matches and six finals matches including the 1994 State of Origin and international Test Matches in the UK, France and the Pacific. “Our world-class sporting venues and facilities are more than just elite sport grounds; they are hubs of sport and recreational activity which bring people together from all walks of life,” he said. “A strong focus of my portfolio is to increase participation in sport in the general community by ensuring that good quality sporting infrastructure is available throughout the State. “Applications are now open for the Sport and Recreation Facility Grants Program and I encourage local councils and sporting bodies to take advantage of this opportunity to secure NSW Government funding.”
Sincero wins osford Race Club was delighted with the turnout for the Gosford 3YO Guineas despite inclement weather which forced a postponement of the meeting from its original April 17 schedule to Monday April 25.
G
Club CEO James Heddo said the meeting on Anzac Day attracted more than 3,000 people which he described as a “tremendous result considering the wet conditions”. “The club was very pleased with the day although we continue to hope for fine weather on this day in 2012,” Mr Heddo said. The Gosford Guineas was
won by Sincero, the local galloper trained at Wyong, by Stephen Farley. Sincero was ridden by Gosford jockey Chris O’Brien who rode the horse perfectly to win by four lengths. “The large group of owners present were thrilled with the win which has a prizemoney of $250,000,” Mr Heddo said. “And the horse will now head to the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival in early July The main race he is aimed at is the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap. Second placegetter at the Gosford Guineas was Happy Patrick and the third placegetter was Celts. The Gosford Guineas has been run in various formats since 1979 but this year’s event was the first time it was offering a $250,000 prize.

Matildas celebrate Asian Cup win
o o t b a l l Fe d e r at i o n Australia recently announced the Westfield Matildas will play cross Tasman rivals, New Zealand national team the Football Ferns, in Gosford on Sunday 15th May.
F
To be broadcast live and exclusive on ABC 1 the match is scheduled for a 3pm kick off on Sunday May 15th at Bluetongue Stadium, and will be the Westfield Matildas last match on Australian soil before heading to Germany for the FIFA Women’s World
Cup 2011™ on June 14. The Westfield Matildas last played the Football Ferns in a two-match series in February 2010 where they defeated the New Zealand team 3-nil on both occasions. The Football Ferns are ranked 24 in the world, with the Westfield Matildas sitting in 11th place behind England and Norway in the rankings released on March 18 2011. Westfield Matildas Head Coach Tom Sermanni has a tough time ahead of him in the months leading up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011™ having to reduce his 34-player squad to 21 for
Germany. “Following our four camps at the Australian Institute of Sport I’ve had a good look at the group of players and it is going to be incredibly difficult to cut this squad down,” said Sermanni. “The work rate and intensity in the sessions has been incredible and all 34 players have put a strong case forward for selection.” With the squad set to be cut down to around 2627 players at the end of this week the remaining players will go into the New Zealand matches knowing that selection for Germany is within their grasp. “These matches will
provide the ideal opportunity to assess where we’re at against a quality opposition and give the coaching staff more to think about before we have to select our 21-player list to send to FIFA,” continued Sermanni. “We’ve got a very dynamic and youthful squad so competition has been fierce and I’m certain these games will be fantastic as both squads (Australia and New Zealand) prepare for the World Cup.” Bluetongue access to the stadium on the day will be via the Eastern Access opposite the Central Coast Leagues Club.

Central Coast leading NSW football Super League
by Ray Sandell
hile there were no matches over the Easter weekend and the matches before and after Easter were washed out, the game on 2 April saw Central Coast maintained their top spot on the NSW Super League table with a clear, if not easy, win over Dulwich Hill.
W
It was a game of two very different halves, with Coast dominating in the first, but getting the fright of their lives in the second with an inspirational Dulwich Hill fightback.
The young Coast team started like a whirlwind, with Mitchell Harper shooting just over the bar after three minutes and Matt Mitchell putting a header past the post three minutes later. It did not take long for the first goal to come however. Captain Jamie Lobb made the first of many runs down the left hand side and put in a perfect cross for the competition’s leading goal scorer, Grant Maudrell to add to his season’s tally with an easy tap in. Coast continued to dominate by attacking down either flank, and Harper, Maudrell and Mitchell should have each added to the score over the next 20 minutes but missed golden
opportunities. Dulwich Hill took advantage of their luck and started to get back into the game but they were similarly guilty of poor shooting with shots going everywhere instead of the direction of the Coast goal. Those few crosses that did get into the penalty area were easily grabbed by Coast goalkeeper Jonathan Faeber, who is rapidly making his mark as one of the leading goalkeepers in the competition. Half time arrived with no addition to the score. Dulwich Hill made a substitution before the restart, replacing Matthew Ferreira with Jason Garrido and he made a huge
difference to the game. The visitors took control and launched numerous attacks, led by Garrido, but again poor finishing and some brilliant work by Faeber denied them their opening score. Coast were relying on quick breaks up field to try and get their second goal but to no avail. Then, in the 63rd minute Coast made another attack down the middle and the ball found its way to Harper who was unmarked and on his way to goal. Dulwich captain Nick Dionisiou gave chase and clipped the heels of Harper as he was about to shoot. Referee Chris Young had no hesitation in showing the red card and young Louis
Bozanic scored from the resultant penalty kick to give Central Coast a coveted two-goal lead. This only seemed to stir Dulwich Hill up again, and they continued to dominate with Coast making the occasional break. Substitutions were made galore. but they made no difference to the scoreboard. Coast had a last-minute flurry with three quick attacks in the last few minutes but poor finishing and a couple of great saves by Dulwich goal keeper Matt Kasbarian saw the final whistle go with Coast a two-goal winner. Both coaches appeared happy with the final result. Dulwich Hill’s Paul Carter said.
“We had our chances but again did not take them. I have no problems with the send off but feel sad for Nick Dionisiou as it was his first game back following a bad injury.” Coast’s Peter Preston remarked that his youngsters again did their job, but added that the season “is very early”. “Over the next few weeks, we have a number of games against very experienced opponents and results from those will really tell us where we are at!,” he said. Weather permitting the next round should play this coming Sunday at Granville.

he first bout of the Central Coast Girls Roller Derby saw ‘Little Goodie Two Skates’ edge out the ‘Axles of Evil’ by three points in their inaugural clash held at the Central Coast Youth Club at Niagra Park last Saturday night.
T
The final score was Little Goodie Two Skates with 130 points to the Axles of Evil’s 127 points. Some 30 odd skaters from the two teams competed for honours in round one in front of more than 300 spectators. Each team member has their own nickname and there is quite a degree of creative thinking that goes into deciding what to call oneself. Some examples are ‘Thunderslut’, ‘AllurenKill’, ‘Slagwagon’ and so on. The story behind the Central Coast Girls Roller Derby began in October 2010 with a Facebook page and the hope that it would generate interest in starting a Roller Derby League for the Central Coast. According to organisers, the page caused a stir and soon enough, there was a group of keen girls ready to help out. Linda Wales, media spokesperson for the Central Coast Roller Girls said Roller Girls is a not-for-profit team where everything is done by enthusiastic volunteers,
mostly by Derby Girls, Coaches and Refs. “Derby is a bit of women’s lib, mixed up in a tough sport, mixed with amazing visual costumes and “out there” derby girl personalities,” said Ms Wales. “Derby is for any woman who wants to get out of her everyday routine and dress up,” she said. Competitions referred to as bouts involve two opposing
teams each with blockers and jammers and the aim of the game is to score more points than the opposing team’s jammer by lapping the other team on the track. “Roller Derby is taking over the world! Teams have sprouted up all over the globe and now we have a League on the Central Coast. It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s a sport but also a bit of a show,” said Wales.
The next clash is yet to be decided but judging by the support from this event, it won’t be too far away. There will be a social skate event held from 9am to midday on Friday May 13 at the Central Coast Youth Club. McKinna confirmed at Chengdu Blades awrie McKinna has joined Chinese Super League (CSL) club Chengdu Blades as Head Coach for the remainder of the 2011 season.
L
After spending an initial period at the club as interim Manager, McKinna will now guide the Blades for the entire campaign, while being retained by the Mariners in a consultancy capacity, assisting the club in commercial and football matters. The deal is part of the club’s involvement
with the Sheffield United International Group - of which Chengdu is also a member - and sees the popular 49-year-old become the first Australian to coach a professional Chinese team. “Obviously I’m delighted to be back involved as a coach here at Chengdu, but to be able to remain a part of the Mariners is something that’s very close to my heart,” said McKinna. “The two clubs have a very close relationship and this move opens up an opportunity for me to get back onto the touchline.” McKinna was named Coach of the Round after his
side claimed a typically gritty 3-3 draw against reigning CSL champions Shandong Luneng at the weekend. The Hyundai A-League Premiership winning coach has also lured former Adelaide United midfielder Jonas Salley to the Sichuan Provence as the club looks to claim its first piece of CSL silverware. Mariners Chairman Peter Turnbull said he was delighted that a deal could be made to retain the services of a much-loved long-time club servant like McKinna. “This is obviously a superb chance for Lawrie

Moondog Mooney makes waves
Central Coast Rugby hard to pick by Larry Thomson
he Match of the Round this Saturday is a very difficult one to decide. Avoca Beach is home to Kariong in a repeat of last year’s Grand Final while at Ourimbah, the home side takes on Terrigal.
T
These are two potentially excellent games of rugby. Avoca Beach will be smarting from their loss last week to Ourimbah and will be very keen to quickly get back on track in their clash with Kariong at Heazlett Park this Saturday. But this clash will not be easy. Kariong will be keen to wreak revenge on Avoca Beach for their loss in last year’s Grand Final and having seen Avoca Beach lose a game last week, they know they are a little vulnerable at present. Kariong had a good win last Saturday and the team as a whole seems far more settled. It will be an even clash and will be a real pointer to the Premiership aspirations of both teams. Kariong have a big forward pack, and although there are a few changes in their backline, they still have the experienced centre John Malu and the speed of newcomer Derek Peachey. They have many potential match winners in their team. Avoca Beach were very close losers last week and if anything, that loss will make them stronger this Saturday. They have a good allround team with no obvious weaknesses from 1 to 15. The result of this game will be sought with interest. The other equally enthralling match sees Ourimbah at home to Terrigal at Ourimbah Rugby Park. Both teams are coming of good wins last Saturday and both teams will be keen to continue that momentum. Ourimbah last Saturday had a very creditable win over Avoca Beach at Avoca and this has not happened very often at all. They will be flying high but will be keen to maintain that confidence. Terrigal also had a comfortable win over The Entrance and also see this game as a great chance to continue the positive form. The big question mark in this game is the clash between the two forwards packs. This is Ourimbah’s strength and this is where
Terrigal will have to match up for the entire 80 minutes. Ourimbah showed last week they will simply keep it in the forwards. Terrigal will have to neutralise that and attempt to get good ball to their backline where they may have a slight advantage. Ourimbah will lead from the front with Brett Cunningham and Matt Ropoama playing well, and with Brett Marchant in good form, they are a formidable forward pack. Marchant will win good ball at the lineout and the Ourimbah scrum has proved dominant in both their games this season. Terrigal, despite the win last week, did struggle at times with their scrum and will have worked on that a lot during the past week. Ourimbah are at home and will have that advantage, and will probably go into this clash as favourites based in recent form. Warnervale and Northlakes meet in the local derby at Woongarrah Field and this will be an intensely fought clash. Northlakes had a good win last week and will be favoured to win this one on Saturday. However it will be tight. Warnervale have performed well in their last two games against Gosford and Kariong and the matches were much closer than the scores indicate. They are a good young team and if Northlakes are slightly off their game, they will be in strife. Gosford face up to The Entrance for their match at Joseph Banks Oval. Gosford have not played a game for three weeks so will be a little scratchy. The Entrance are at home and have been quite competitive in all their games this year. Their forward pack is quite strong but have struggled in the backs this year.

ocal surfing identity Andrew “Moondog’ Mooney featured in a stunning photograph in one of Australia’s leading surf magazines, Tracks, straddling a colossal wave on Monday May 2.
L
In a brief story on Mooney, Tracks scribe Col Bernasconi wrote on the magazine’s web page that Mooney “was towed into this green, creature from the deep, at Cape Solander”. The Cape, now better known the world over as Ours, is located at Botany Bay in Sydney and is known
to love a solid easterly swell. Crossing the shipping lane of Botany Bay, the waves heave up and then grind along the shelf at Ours just metres from the rocks. This wave is not to be taken lightly. A resident of Kincumber, Mooney had surfed at Ours before and had arrived at the wellknown surfing spot at about 6am for what was expected to be a solid swell. “The wind was looking good,” he told Grandstand, adding that he had been in touch with Swellnet. “It was quite cold, the swell didn’t show up until about 4.30pm and we’d kept our eye on it the whole day,” Mooney said.
“Luckily when I asked for the day off I got my boss in a good mood. “That wave was a good one... Dom [Damian Wills] towed me into it, there were guys paddling but it was really hard to get into them. “I didn’t even think this wave would do anything, but Dom eyeballed it and the closer we got to it, the more it looked like a goer.” “Hippo [Ryan Hippwood] reckons he got the best wave of his life yesterday ... there were long waits, but yes, when they came, they were mental. “There were heaps of photographers and cameras out there; they are usually out there when it’s obvious
that there’s going to be a swell. “The photo you see there was taken by a photographer who was swimming in the water and was quite close. Some of those photographers have 3-D lenses, 50-mm lenses.” Mooney had been involved in heavy competition up until about the age of 21. Dropped by his major sponsor, last year, he still surfs on a semi-professional basis but is on the lookout for a new sponsor. When Mooney is not in the water, he is working as a vinyl layer on trains.

April 6 2011. The Central Coast contingent was comprised of six teams of fours of over 60 year old bowlers who found good form in a trial game. With the Central Coast stalwarts’ winning five rinks out of six it was a confidence
and morale boosting result after faltering against Newcastle at Wallsend only four weeks earlier. One of the Central Coast’s strongest combinations made up of Dave Arnoult, Alan Breakwell and David Buttery skippered by John
Roberts recorded the biggest margin win of the day 21-14 over a gun side led by Crawford Linton. Hot on their heels was Dick Thornton’s team of Ken Hope, Tony Swaine and Phil Flippence and George Clark’s team of John Edwards, Lindsay Adamson, and Dennis McDevitt, both registering solid 20-15 victories. Dave Limbrick’s team of Kevin Ryan, Allan Olsen and Dick Love enjoyed a big early lead but the gap narrowed over the closing ends to finish 22-17, whilst Geoff Crisps team of Karl Foster, Peter Redman and Alan Rogers were happy victors with a 19-15 win. Surprisingly, the Miro Perovic combination of Steve Smith, Alan Rhodes and Alex Cameron found the going tough and went down 15-24. This annual trial game has been held on a home and away basis over the past six years and will return to Ettalong Bowling Club next year.

Mariners make double signing he Central Coast Mariners have signed attacking midfielder Adriano Pellegrino from Perth Glory and versatile former North Queensland Fury player Brad McDonald.
T
The pair have put pen to paper on deals that will see them join the Hyundai A-League 2011 Grand Finalists for next season, plus the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2012. Pellegrino has also committed to the club for the Hyundai A-League 2012/13
season. “We’re delighted to bring in players with the qualities of Adriano and Brad to our club,” said Mariners Chairman Peter Turnbull. “The club is coming off an excellent season with another Grand Final appearance, and we’re fortunate to have our second AFC Champions League campaign to look forward to in the near future as well. “Bolstering our squad with the addition of these two established but youthful players sees us move into this exciting time with momentum and with plenty for everyone on the Central Coast to embrace,” he said.
Pellegrino, 26, quickly made an impact in the Hyundai A-League after joining Perth Glory in 2008, being named the club’s Most Glorious Player in his inaugural season with the West Australians. A stunning left-footed goal against Melbourne Victory in Round 14 of that campaign has seen the Adelaide-born midfielder grace highlight reels around the country ever since. It’s those types of sparkling performances that Mariners fans can get excited about as Pellegrino plies his trade at Bluetongue Stadium for the next two years.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to start this new chapter of my life and my career, and to be able to do it at a club that’s been successful and has had a great season is fantastic,” Pellegrino said. “Arnie (Graham Arnold) and Phil (Moss) did a great job last season and hopefully we as a team can take the next step next season and win that championship,” he said. A product of the Brisbane Roar youth system, McDonald made 25 Hyundai A-League appearances for the Fury during the 2010/11 season. The 20-year-old became a regular fixture in Franz Straka’s line-up after the natural left-footer made an impression in his debut off the bench against Adelaide United early in the season. Born in Papua New Guinea, McDonald says he is keen to settle into life on the Central Coast. “I’m very excited about moving there and joining the club that were Grand Finalists last season,” he
said. “The Champions League should be great, and that’s something else I’m really looking forward to. They’ve got some great coaches there also, and it seems like a great community that I can’t wait to be a part of.” Pellegrino and McDonald

Local resident becomes youth envoy in Samoa ormer Gosford High School student Amelia Cole left for Samoa on Friday April 29 to take up her role as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD) to Samoa.
F
Twenty-three-year-old Amelia applied for the intensely competitive AYAD program and was selected for this Federal Government Aid Initiative. In this volunteer role, she will be coordinating the program that will teach Surf Life Saving techniques and First Aid for six months in remote areas of Samoa. This position was formed in response to the latest Tsunami in Samoa which caused significant loss of life. It was decided that having a program that upskilled people to enable them to help out effectively during emergencies would greatly benefit the community. Amelia, who graduated from Newcastle University with a BA majoring in International Studies, left for Samoa the day after her graduation. She had completed a week’s Pre-Departure training in Canberra and was looking forward to learning more about Samoa and its people and assisting in whatever way she could. Meanwhile, her younger brother, 20-year-old Joshua, recently undertook a Life Saver exchange Program in New Zealand. A former student of Wyong High, now completing a three-year Electrician’s Apprenticeship, Josh flew
to New Zealand on March 24 after being selected by Surf Life Saving NSW for the five-day program. During his five-day stay in New Zealand, he trained in various rescue methods that may differ in that country, including Rock Rescues, River rescues, IRB and Jetski Rescues. Josh also patrolled beaches around the Auckland area, learning about their techniques. His club, Terrigal Surf Club, hopes that he will be able to share his new skills and experience. Josh and Amelia, who are residents of Jilliby, both joined the Terrigal Surf Club at the age of five and ever since, have been actively involved in the club’s activities. For ones so young, the siblings have racked up an impressive roll call of achievements, aside from earning medals and certificates from numerous lifesaving competitions held over the years. They have been involved in Leadership opportunities available in Surf Life Saving to an Australian level. Amelia has participated as a youth delegate at the Sydney APEC Conference in 2007. Josh is the present NSW ‘Young Life Saver of the Year’ in addition to having served a number of senior roles and being awarded the bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. Both are very active in their club as Patrol Captain and Vice Patrol Captain and both have been awarded Terrigal ‘Patrol Person of the Year’ in recent years for their service to their club.

Fishing
Central Coast Fishing Scene he fishing on the Central Coast has been exceptional with record numbers of Jewfish being caught up and down the Coast.
T
Pearl beach has been the hot spot to date with some big fish being caught, not to mention flathead, salmon, bream and the kingfish have just started to show up around the headland at Pearl Beach point. The Entrance Beach on the northern side of the channel seems to still be the spot for those beach jewfish, fresh mullet strips and fresh squid just and what some of the local lads are saying to use as bait for a consistence catch of these beautiful fish. The lake has fishing reasonable for whiting and bream but some of the old timers are just starting to catch nice blackfish. The Brisbane Waters has been producing a lot of fish, big flathead are still being caught with good bags of bream and whiting, but remember the whiting fishing will start picking up this month so get your whiting gear out, and let’s hope it was as good as last year’s season. The Rip Bridge seems to still be the hotspot to date
with good catches of jewfish, bream and leather jackets. Blue swimmer crabs are still on the bite with some very nice crabs weighing in around the 600gram mark. Crabs will slowly start to decline now as the colder months start to move in. Outside fishing flathead seems to be everywhere with a few small reddies still biting. The pesky leather jackets have been quiet but get ready as the water temperature falls the leather jackets will be back in force. Bonito, salmon and tailor schools have been in good numbers. Reports of bluefin tuna have been showing up around the fads outside with one fisherman reporting he had seen a marlin in amongst the tuna looking for a feed. A few dolphin fish have been caught but nothing of great size to report. The kingfish have started to show up around Lion Island and the mouth of the Hawkesbury with good reports from the Pittwater where there have been some big fish on the move. From Pearl Beach point running along the headland to the opening of the Hawkesbury that stretch of water has started to see

some good fishing including kingfish, but there are a lot of sharks out and about taking fresh baits for the kingies but they provide some great fishing action. For the guys who like their lure fishing Brisbane Waters have been turning it on. One of our local lads from Woy Woy Bay caught a nice 42cm estuary perch while he was luring for bream under the moored boats, Correa Bay at the southern end of Woy Woy Bay where there is a rocky point sticking out. The bream guys have been luring out from 25cm to 32cm using 35mm shallow diving lures and small tail suidgeys. The boys targeting flathead Berkleys nuclear chicken and pumpkin seed minnows have been the choice. See any of our local tackle shops around the central coast for fresh bait and get advice on where to fish. Most of the guys are willing to help out their customers. If you have any fishing stories or club results please forward them to me along with any photo’s with name or fishing club email them to baitnboats@live.com.au or call Rob on 0404180517.
Adelaide lures in a few fishy surprises ince the sinking of HMAS Adelaide, she is already defying critics by attracting a wealth of marine life, the Central Coast Artificial Reef Project claims(CCARP).
S
“Since the Adelaide’s scuttling, she is already proving herself,” said Sue Dengate Project Secretary CCARP. “She has surprised even us with how quickly she has attracted life” Ms Dengate said. She said that during a
second dive, only a few hours after the sinking, a Cuttlefish and a Yellow Tail were spotted by the survey divers. “On the second day, they spotted a school of about 200 Yellow Tail and one Cuttlefish swimming over the forward deck,” Ms Dengate said. She said also spotted was a small goby and a tiny leatherjacket both taking up residence in the top of the mast structure. “We didn’t expect this so soon after the scuttling and professors at the University are very excited about it,” Ms Dengate said.

“The Adelaide has also defied critics of the project and we can tick off several of the claims already.” Despite claims that the Adelaide would not even make it past Manly, she arrived on the Central Coast without incident and in very quick time.
“Despite warnings that she would go 600 metres towards shore during sinking, she has gently settled exactly where planned to be, 1.8kms from the beach,” Ms Dengate said. “They said she might fall over but she is bolt upright,”
she said. “The helicopter hangers are intact and without the slightest sign of damage. The crowds on the beach were testimony to the level of support that this project has had and although the dolphins meant a delay, this too was a great sign.
“Dolphins had escorted the Adelaide from Perth on her last voyage (seen as a good sign by sailors) and their appearance before the scuttling seemed to farewell her life above the waves and welcome her to her new home.”

Tennis community and region. Betty Light from Gosford Tennis Club was the recipient this year. Betty Light has been and continues to be a valued volunteer assisting with the
Juniors for many years in the Central Coast area including as a volunteer at Gosford Tennis Centre working with Juniors and as a member of the Junior Committee. Betty has been a tennis stalwart for many years
working in the Gosford Tennis club’s canteen. She has previously been recognised by Gosford Tennis Association for services to the association with a Life Membership. Where as so often people receive this award they ‘drop off’ - not Betty, she has increased her input and dedication to tennis volunteers by organising other volunteers. In previous years Betty has also been awarded the Red Cross Award for Outstanding Service to the Aged Community Award. Northumberland Community Tennis Officer Maurice Murphy presented the award on behalf of Tennis NSW. “It would be great to have volunteers such a Betty in every club across the state, in a time when such volunteerism is unfortunately showing a decline”. Maurice said.

“If in doubt don’t go out” SW Maritime issues swell alert
N
NSW Maritime has issued an urgent alert to boat skippers and rock fishermen with treacherous swells expected to impact much of the coast for the next few days. NSW Maritime Chief Executive Steve Dunn said the Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting adverse conditions for small craft. “Large southerly swells of up to three metres and strong winds up to 30 knots are expected,” he said “These conditions should concern anyone boating in coastal areas, particularly where skippers are planning to head out to sea.” Following last weekend’s tragic rock fishing drownings in Sydney, rock fishermen are urged to stay away from
exposed headlands. Coastal bar crossings can be treacherous, especially in such conditions, and boat fishing around offshore reefs and near exposed rock platforms should be avoided. These large ocean swells are likely to cause extremely dangerous bar and offshore conditions. Every skipper is responsible for the safety of their vessel and all on board, and should routinely check boating forecasts before heading out. NSW Maritime advises skippers should always: Check the official weather before and during boating; Ensure the boat and its equipment is suitable for the conditions; Log on/ off with a Marine Rescue marine radio base for every trip offshore; and Wear a lifejacket

Northern Valleys unveil new playing strip orthern Valleys Netball Club has unveiled their new playing uniform for season 2011, their first change in uniform in five years.
N
The release of the new uniform coincided with the third round of play in Gosford Netball Association’s Winter Competition. “We decided that as other clubs were going with a more modern uniform that the time was right for us to look at advancing our club’s design” said President Allison Robertson. “This is why we decided to opt for a dress, rather
than the traditional skirt and top which has been the consistent theme across our history” he said. “But central to the theme of the dress was showcasing our club’s logo, a Butterfly. Adding to the announcement of the new playing strip the club also confirmed that it had boosted its numbers significantly this year with four new teams, taking their total to 18 (12 junior and six senior). “One of the central reasons to our higher numbers was the further vested interest we put in publicising our club prior to our three registration days” remarked Publicity Officer
Jodie Leeson. “For the first time we held a registration day at Erina Fair Shopping Centre and despite the forty degree heat the day was a resounding success”. This season, the club’s 32nd will again see it hold its largest fundraiser, a trivia night at the home of major sponsor, The Elanora Hotel, East Gosford. “The support of the Elanora Hotel as our major sponsor is paramount to the success of our club. Their hosting of our club’s major fundraiser in the Trivia Night is a chance for the two entities to work together to celebrate their partnership”
added Leeson. There will also be a chance for the club’s youngest players to get involved in the off court fun with the Junior Bingo Night at Adcock Park. “Last year was the first time we ran this event and it was a great success. It gave our junior teams the chance to get together for an evening of fun, where they were able to play some games, all the while competing for prizes,” said Leeson. “After only three weeks of the season we are quietly confident that this will be one of our most successful seasons, both on and off the court”.
Berkley remain unbeaten by Val Bridge
ast Sunday saw Berkeley Vale take a two-point lead at the top of the CountryNet Premier League football competition maintaining their unbeaten record following a 3-0 win over Wyong at Mingara Sports Field.
L
The game was closer than the score indicates with the home team taking their opportunities through
Brenton Olzomer (2) and Troy Mumford while Wyong, after scoring 11 goals in their opening game of the season failed to score for the second consecutive match. One penalty in each half, both converted by Terrie Dries, allowed The Entrance to force a draw against Kanwal in their Saturday night match at Pat Morley Oval. The home team was unlucky, striking the crossbar three times in the first 25 minutes before taking the lead with their first penalty. The setback lifted
Kanwal and goals to Daniel Green and Alex Mitchell gave them a 2-1 half-time lead which they held until the second penalty with just five minutes left to play. Umina picked up its first win of the season following draws in its two previous matches with a hard-fought 2-0 win over a plucky Kincumber team at Umina Oval. Both goals, from Marc Tarring and Jason Stafford, came in the second half. East Gosford were stretched to the limit in a see-sawing match against
Killarney District at EDSACC with the lead changing four times before a goal to Jason McMinimee two minutes from full-time gave the Rams a 3-2 win. Earlier McMinimee had scored from the penalty spot with David McKellar also netting for the winners, while veterans Michael Finch and Chris Fleming. The final match, between Wyoming and Budgewoi was washed out as was the Women’s Premier League games.

The Rotary Gala Concert on May 22nd at the Central Coast Leagues Club supports Central Coast Music and at the same time raises money for Gosford Rotary Clubs. The 14th Annual Rotary Gala Concert “SWING AND SWOON” will bring together over 100 performers from the Central Coast Symphony Orchestra, Gosford City Brass Band, Central Coast Concert Band and Central Coast Philharmonia Choir. The swing era of the 20s and 30s has stayed with us through many genres to the present day. Even Bach has had the “Swing treatment”. ABC presenter Christopher Lawrence created a programme called “Swoon”. These are the melodies that give the “tingle” factor, especially in the back of the neck. We’re sure all concertgoers know one piece that gives that sensation. Our programme will be a mix of the two, allowing you one moment to tap along to the favourites of the swing era, from Duke Ellington to the present day, and the next to sit back and experience the “tingle” factor created by the great ballads and Adagios of three centuries of music. SWING and SWOON will be a true musical experience of contrasts. Bring the whole family there is something for everyone in this concert; a true CENTRAL COAST COMMUNITY EVENT.

Sporting opportunities in gymnastics n 2009, The D e p a r t m e n t of Sport and Recreation in partnership with the gymnastics club now known as Central Coast Gymsports at Charmhaven initiated a school holiday activity “Gymnastics for Children with Special Needs”.
I
The program was successfully run over a number of school holiday periods with the activity being the only specialised sport available in the northern end of the Wyong Shire for those with special needs. The positive response to the holiday class prompted Central Coast Gymsports to begin a weekly Saturday morning class mid-2010 open to all ages for those with a disability. The team of instructors include sister act, Judy Tolhurst and Cait Walker, along with junior mentor Judy’s son, Lachlan. Judy and Cait facilitate the class, attend additional training on how to better support the participants, network with other gymnastics clubs with Special Olympic classes and encourage participants to have fun and train possibly one day for competition. On April 9 2011, Central Coast Gymsports fielded an inaugural Special Olympics Team with three
competitors entering their first competition. Two participated in the junior recreational competition and one in the senior recreational competition at Bankstown City YMCA Competition for Athletes with a Disability. All team members were successful in the event – receiving first and second place in all junior categories and first place in all senior events. The big week of firsts continued with Central Coast Gymsports taking the “Special Olympics Class” to the 2011 Gymnastics NSW Country Championships held at Niagara Park Youth Centre. On April 14, the class demonstrated some of their skills across a number of apparatus, including uneven bars, the balance beam, rings and rhythmic gymnastics. With big smiles and an abundance of enthusiasm, the class provided a great promotion of GymNSW’s vision of ‘Gymnastics for All’. All the participants were well-deserving of their performance medals and were greatly appreciated by those in attendance. The week has inspired the group to continue training and they look forward to more competitions in 2011 including the first NSW Disability State Championships to be held November 17 to 26 at Sutherland.

McBeatty bowls a winner
by Peter Arnold
y the age of 14, Luke McBeatty had been playing bowls for about two years.
B
He played lead for Andrew McDonald, winning the 2010 Club Fours Championship 27-8 against worthy opponents. In the Club Pairs Championship, Luke and Mick Jurd were only beaten by Peter Gaffel’s last bowl in one of the semi-finals. The Central Coast section of the NSW Rookies Challenge saw Luke make it through to the semi-finals where he only went down by a few shots. The winner of this event was Alan Joss, another Everglades Country Club bowler. Luke’s biggest game of 2010, (if you could pick one), was the final of the Minor Singles Championship against the more senior and long-time bowler Stan Johnson. Stan led 10-9 over Luke, but Stan’s experience saw this turn into an 18-10 game in his favour. In fact Stan continued to lead towards a winning
position of 27-22. Showing a maturity beyond his years, young Luke chipped away to hit the front 28-27 and then lead 30-28 with the last end to follow. With his third bowl, he drew the perfect shot to hold game. Stan’s on-shot only just missed and Luke was thus proclaimed as the
youngest ever winner of the Men’s Minor Singles Championship, to the delight of the crowd who seemed to favour the young bloke. Luke had a very successful year in 2010, taking three trophies at the presentation night during which he thanked the Master Coach Frank Pengelly. Frank had coached him all
of last year, and still looks after this super young bowler, even though he is now “semi-retired” – a word that Frank really doesn’t understand. Now aged 15, Luke has gone further ahead having played in the recent school holidays and partnered Jacob Casswell to take out the Zone 15 Junior Pairs Championship. He followed this on the morning of Sunday April 17, when Luke (lead) and Alan Joss (skip), won their semi-final in the men’s Club Pairs Championship over Peter O’Sullivan and James Roberts by two shots. They backed up in the afternoon against the odds on favourites in Darren and Les Morrison. Luke and Alan were the crowd favourites and proved it by taking out the final by just two shots again. Luke, who now plays in the Grade 5 Pennant side at Everglades, is also a competent golfer and plays at the Everglades Country Club golf course on a handicap of 11, with already a couple of good wins under his belt.

The $64M question: Settling on a sale price in 2011 Every owner has a price they would like to see on their property. Every buyer wants to find a property at the right price for them. And the price a property actually sells for is the only price that really counts. No arguments there. Now let’s imagine this is the year you intend to sell a property you own. As a seller, you have price expectations and probably plans that depend on the price you achieve. You also have
choices. First, you can choose a marketing agent because of the market knowledge, experience and trusted service they provide. Second, you can choose a marketing strategy and method of sale based on both your agent’s experience and your own research. Club laments Council failure to upgrade amenities he Umina Beach Rugby League Football Club has lashed out at Gosford Council for its “unwillingness” to support the community and the Football Club despite $4.3million Federal government funding last year for the upgrade of the Penninsula Recr eational precinct.

Treasurer Kevin Hulls criticised Council for failing to upgrade the downstairs amenities of the Club which he said were in a very poor condition and were supposed to be upgraded as part of the $4.3 million funding. The Club’s frustration was further aggravated when a day out on May 1 at the Club was organised by Bendigo Bank and the Club for 15 elderly residents from the Penninsula retirement Village. elderly resident had all eagerly looked forward to, had to be cancelled because they could not get access to the club amenities. Club Secretary Ian Sonter had previously written to council requesting special dispensation for the day but the council said a security deposit of $1,000 for a key to the amenities and access to the lift was required before access could be granted. In an email circulated widely to senior community figures including Federal, States and local members of Parliament, Mr Hulls said it was totally unacceptable to expect the club to pay a deposit to the tune of $1,000 when as a community organisation, it had various commitments to other clubs, non-profit bodies and organisations. In addition, the Club had already paid a bond of $500 and as a non-profit body, it simply did not have an extra $1,000 for a key. “We do not have the funds to have a total of $1,500 tied up in key deposits sitting at the council with the commitment we have made to the junior club, the High School football squad and the Motor Neurone Association,” Mr Hulls said. “The council has spent hundreds of thousands of Federal dollars on a facility that is not available to the community who paid for it without massive deposits being imposed, have spent thousands on the cricket nets that won’t be used for six months but cannot
change a toilet seat in the ladies as attached for the football community. “It is disgraceful that these people work for the community, they are paid by the community. Is it too much to ask them to spend
a couple of thousand dollars on cosmetic changes?” Mr Hulls said the Club had spent countless hours and hard work on raising public awareness on critical issues and causes such as breast cancer, depression,
and motor neurone disease. The Club had also worked closely with numerous sporting bodies and schools to garner crucial support for community causes. In addition, the club had maintained a relatively clean record on disciplinary issues relating to the Club’s team members and Club premises. “We have not had an incident at the oval, clubhouse or licenced premises in four years and we are level 2 in the Good Sports Programme,” Mr Hulls said. He said he was disappointed that despite the Club’s hard work and good standing within the community that there was little cooperation from Council. He said the Club’s work with youths within the community had yielded enormous benefits. In catering to the needs and welfare of the most vulnerable members of the community, the Club had helped to reduce the crime rate in the area. “If we didn’t have a club, the social and the financial costs to the community in terms of the rates of offences committed and incarcerations rates would be far greater,” Mr Hulls said. Mr Hulls said he hoped the issue would be resolved soon as another day out is being earmarked for June 6 for a group of people with motor neurone disease

Member for Gosford responds n a media release, the Member for Gosford, Cr Chris Holstein said he will be looking into government grants to assist Gosford Council in upgrading the downstairs amenities of the Umina Beach Rugby League Club.
I
Cr Holstein said the original application was
for the upgrade of the upstairs clubhouse but the application had been submitted quickly and there wasn’t a great deal of detail. “It was for the upgrading of upstairs. It cost more than expected but it also didn’t include aspects of some of the needs downstairs so there were certain criteria for the federal funding,” he said. “I don’t think anyone can argue that overall the facilities down there at Umina have been a great
asset to the community. “There are aspects around there that need to be upgraded, including the amenities and my intent is to find funding from the respective state government to assist council in completing the works,” Cr Holstein said. “We are working our way through a litany of issues at the moment and I can assure you I’m giving everything as highest priority as possible as we try and tick things off.”
This is what we’ve done: Council

Space & Leisure Services at Gosford City Council said Funding through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) was provided for the upgrade of the Umina Clubhouse upstairs area. Statements issued by Council and made by Cr Holstein refer to the upgrades undertaken to the upstairs area of the Clubhouse, external paint and access provided in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act. Ms Dart pointed out that Council had in fact brought to the attention of the Umina Beach Rugby League Football Club (Umina Beach RLFC) the availability of grant opportunities. She said Council had provided advice to the and the Central Coast Division of Country Rugby League relating to two grant opportunities that could enable the Club to source
funding to upgrade the facility. “Council offered to assist the Club with any grant applications and is happy to work with the Club to pursue funding opportunities to allow for these works to take place,” Ms Dart said. Ms Dart then outlined the works thus far carried out at the Club saying works to date have included the installation of accessible toilets and lift, kitchenette and storage facilities, new flooring, lighting, balcony and access stairway, as well as internal and external paint. She highlighted the fact that the clubhouse area had been renovated so that it is now two separate areas which can be used by various groups. She also said Council is aware of the conditions of the ground level toilets and also pointed out that minor works were undertaken in December 2010 at the request of the Umina Beach RLFC “to alleviate minor concerns”.

L J Hooker Umina Beach 1st grade, maintained top position on the table after a very physical 14-10 win over the tigers. Nothing was spared by any player on the field as both teams battled away in the match of the round. While the game was very physical, it was played with the utmost respect by all and was a pleasure to watch. Best for the Bunnies were Blake Mattei , Jim and Mack Fawcett and Ryan Maskill with bookends Josh Foley and Matt Paulsen leading from the front in their usual leave nothing in the tank games. Umina Bunnies Reserve Grade The mynewv8.com.au 2nd grade side, more than matched the strength of the Tigers for the majority of the game and it was only in the last 10 minutes that the opposition managed to eke out a 26-10 win. Another team that is destined for a change of luck. Umina Bunnies Open Grade The KFC Open grade,

Try it now and reap the benefit
tried to overcome a vastly fitter side and for long periods, held the opposition at bay only to see silly errors give the opposition enough field position and ball to win numerous games. They never give up trying as a win is just around the corner for them. Umina Bunnies Under 19s We were right in the game at halftime break at 12-all when it looked like an upset against the competition leaders was on the cards.
Second half errors and a lack of fitness saw the tigers take the game easily. If the bunnies could play as they did in the first half for an entire match, the sky’s the limit with their ability to give this competition a real shakeup. Salt Construction Under 17s The U/17s went down gallantly to a very well drilled tigers side but they never gave up trying.

World Oceans Day events L ocal marine environment group, Ocean & Coastal Care Initiatives, will be celebrating World Oceans Day on June 8 by treating the community to two events.
This year’s focus is on sustainable fishing and OCCI plans to highlight the achievements that are being made. The first event will be held in the Erina Room, opposite Erina library at Erina Fair, from 10am to 3pm. Displays by various groups will showcase their projects and there will be guest speakers from 11am–
2pm. Groups involved will be Marine Stewardship Council, Oceanwatch, Catchment Management Authority, Recreational Fishing Alliance and many more. “In the evening we will celebrate the diversity of ocean life with the free screening of the movie, ‘Beneath The Blue’, an inspirational movie of life under the waves of Sydney Harbour,” a group spokesperson said. The film is scheduled to screen at Erina Trust Hall, cnr Karalta Rd and Ilya Avenue, Erina and the event will begin at 7pm. These events are being sponsored by Hunter-

least 11,500 jobs and reduce the NSW budget by more than $1 billion over the next four years. He said local clubs will not stand by and watch the destruction of 835 local jobs. “Local clubs employ more than 2,500 people,” Mr Newell said. “More than a third of these positions will go if the Government gives into the demands of a Tasmanian politician who received fewer votes than there are members of Diggers @ The Entrance.
Don’t be stressed out about your accounts any longer!
“Problem gambling academics have warned the Federal Government that mandatory pre-commitment will not help problem gamblers. This technology is a complete waste of money that will put clubs on the scrapheap and more than 800 locals out of a job. ‘’A far better solution would be to introduce a voluntary pre-commitment system that could help recreational gamblers set limits without needing to register for a licence,’’ he said.
