“The Kid” Collins joins the winners at Gosford Speedway
by Kierah Hawkins
hris “The Kid” Collins, driving the #72 GPS Motorsports Sponsored Omega Chassis, scored his first feature win and first place over all in the competitive KT Heavy class at the Central Coast Speedway Kart Club on Sunday 12th November.
C
Chris had a consistent run with a top 3 in all the heats throughout the day, setting him up perfectly for the final. Fellow team mate Graham Keats looked certain to win the final and the day until a broken chain ended his chances and this allowed Chris to take the chequered flag first. Other standout performers for the day were
Mitch Brien driving the #63 Dave Brien Automotive Benson Chassis entry, placing first in two classes, in KT Light and Clubman Light. Mitch drove to perfection, never finishing outside the top 3 in his heat races. Cameron Ware placed 2nd and Jade Pollock Finishing in 3rd Position. KT Light was almost a mirror image for Mitch, with 3 Heat wins and a 2nd Place in the Final. State Title holder Dan Morris finished a strong 2nd and Phill Gibson rounding out the top 3. Sportsman 125cc class saw an interesting situation with the yellow flags coming out with a lap to go in heat 2. Four drivers pulled off the track before greeting the chequered flag, handing the heat win to the only remaining driver still
circulating Kierah Hawkins. Luke Storey took 1st place while Stuart Bond was runner up and Kierah Hawkins finishing in 3rd place. The youngest competitors, the mighty Midgets were the biggest field of the day, with a total of 11 kids from the ages of 7. Jake Donaldson was 1st, Brandon Moore 2nd and Andrew Sayre 3rd. Rookie driver John Gillespie held off NSWSKC members Luke Sayre (2nd) and Lachlan Caunt (3rd) for a well earned 1st place on the day. The old fox Les Green was back in form in Clubman Heavy, holding off young Matt Bond and State Title holder Steve Omeley, Steve suffered a DNF in the final but that still saw him claim 3rd place on the podium.
Woy Woy union presentation day

The club players of the year for each team were U11s’ Lachlan Shelly, U12s’ Jack Alipate, U13s’ Max Edwards, U14s’ Jive Johnston, U15s’ Joss Morrison, U16s’ Damien Fleming, U17s’ Jake Harding & Connor Stanton. “The Pride of the Lions” awards are given to people who help the club in an “unofficial” capacity.
This year they were presented to Neil “Pa” David and Jurgen Hundt. Jurgen was up very early every Saturday morning to help ground manager Mick Dean set up and he would then help pack up at the end of the day. Neil, or “Pa” as he’s known to all at the club, has been chief BBQ man for many years due to his grandsons, Pat and Liam Hines playing. “As the two boys will now be playing as a part of the seniors at Woy Woy Oval, “Pa” is expected to be moving on with them and will be very much missed
not just for his work, but everyone loves having him around,” said publicity officer Bill MacLean “Having said that and knowing “Pa” I’m sure we will see him around Ettalong Oval during the season next year with a pair of tongs in his hand at some stage.” The club’s major award, “Club Person of the Year” went to canteen and clothing manager Cathy MacLean for all her hard work during the year. “You do these things for the kids, not the awards, but it’s nice to be recognised by the clubs committee.” Cathy said.

Collett wins in Homebush
by Warwick Whitmore
ackson Collett has continued to dominate the track in his favoured 800m event, winning gold at the recent New South Wales All School Athletics Championships.
J
The All Schools Championships were held in Homebush Bay, the same venue where Collett won gold medals in the 400m and 800m at the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges titles recently. Collett faced a much tougher field of competitors at the All Schools championships and had to push hard in the final 100m of the two-lap race to win the gold medal. “The first lap was run at a pretty good pace and I tagged onto the back of the leader to gain a slip-stream into the head wind. “With 400m to go, I made a move into first place and had to battle hard to hold off the other boys down the home straight”, said Collett. His winning time of 2:02.13 minutes was only slightly quicker than the second placed runner, Edward Penrose of Newington College, who ran a 2:02.38 to edge out Sam Porter (The Kings School) by one-hundredth of a second for the silver medal. Collett then backed up his strong 800m performance by winning the bronze medal in the 400m. It was another tight finish for Collett in the 400m, running a time of 52.09sec, just three-hundredths of a second behind second placed runner Ben Allen from Carinya Christian College. In the same race,

Stephen Eaton (The Shore School, North Sydney) broke the meet record for the U14 boy’s 400m with an outstanding time of 51.17sec. It was not just Collett who impressed his peers at the All Schools championships, with fellow Central Coast Academy of Sport athlete Rob Dredge also winning gold at the state titles. Dredge’s first place performance also came in the 800m, where he ran a comfortable 1:57.40 to earn his place on top of the dais in the U17s’ event.
“It wasn’t the best time that I’ve run, but we unexpectedly had to run a straight final with no heats. “With that kind of preparation, where I was thinking I’d just have to run a qualifying time for the final, I decided to run more of a tactical race and it paid off”, said Dredge. Both Collett and Dredge will now compete for National glory at the Australian All Schools Championships to be held in December, before the busy Australian domestic season gets into full swing.

2x Gold– Daniel Villani of New Lambton was ďŹ red up and in top form competing in two weight divisions U34 and U38. He dominated from the onset, with a textbook display of uchimata and seoi [shoulder] throws. He threw in some new left techniques he was
developing, winning all his bouts. His timing was impeccable and a sign of things to come. The coaches recognised the display of skills by awarding him with U12 player of the day. Bronze – Kassiea Naidoo of Watanobbi put in a good performance and was playing in heavier divisions, which didn’t let her show her full potential. Nevertheless, it was a strong showing on the ground.

Gold and Silver –Angelina Yokoyama of Toronto showed that when she is in form, she is hard to stop. She played her opponents instinctively, waited for the right moment and then threw for full point. For good measure, she also entered the U17 cadets and placed second. Gold– U/14, u-48kg Neeson Naidoo of Watanobbi had some difďŹ cult bouts, showing only glimpses of his skilled technical ability. Although his play was too loose and having difďŹ culty controlling the grips, he was able to slip in the odd throw to score.
Gold– Daniel Villani ďŹ nished this years’ last contest in top form by winning every bout with full ippon point throws. In the ďŹ nals, he had to match up to the current National titleholder, who he always lost to, this time defeating him with a superb hip throw in less than 30 seconds, which was the icing on the cake. In the process, he produced one of the best throws of the day. Gold– U12, U46kg Kassiea Naidoo of Watanobbi had her best performance to date with beautifully executed shoulder throws.

Fifteen skippers entered, which included one from Queensland and two from Western Australia. The current Australian Title holder Andrew Reed could not make the event from Victoria, but between the competitors, there were over ten former Australian Titles holders. rounds, Chris had 8 wins. Jeff Byerly, Maurice Fletcher, Owen Jarvis, Frank Russell and Wayne Keavey had one each. At he end of the ďŹ rst day, Chris had a massive 28 point lead with Glen Dawson in second place and Jeff Byerly in 3rd. Day two started in similar conditions and places were more evenly shared. After lunch, the racing was moved to the southern bank with stronger wind and Wayne Keavey pulled off three wins in a row in the afternoon When the wind ďŹ nally came, Scott Condie also improved in the conditions, along with Owen Jarvis and Jeff Byerly while, Glenn Dawson and Frank Russell didn’t fare as well. Chris Stokes won with Owen Jarvis second and Jeff Byerly third.

Mariners
Mariners round five victory n 80th minute strike by marksman Matt Simon earned the Central Coast Mariners all three points against Wellington Phoenix in round 5 of the Hyundai A-League played on Friday, November 4.
A
The late winner was just reward for a combative team performance by the yellow and navy against a Phoenix side renowned for their ability to boss their opponent on their home patch. Livewire striker Bernie Ibini had given the Mariners the lead shortly after the half time break, tapping home from Simon’s accurate
cross, after attacking midfielder Daniel McBreen had released the hard working striker down the left flank. Crucially, Simon’s neat finish, just ten minutes, from time put the Mariners back in the ascendancy after Wellington had restored parity through Chris Greenacre 12 minutes earlier. After a relatively even opening to the game, the Mariners began to take control of the match, with Ibini central to many of the chances crafted. First, the 19-year-old was on the end of some neat interplay between Michael McGlinchey and McBreen, only to see his shot deflect off a Phoenix defender and
away for a corner. Then in the 33rd minute, Ibini had another goalbound effort thwarted by the Wellington defence. Super work down the left side by Simon saw the ball eventually fall for Ibini, whose effort was only prevented from hitting the back of the net after Phoenix defender Brent Griffiths did well to desperately throw his body in the path of the ball. But there would be no stopping Ibini – who is fast emerging as a cult figure for Mariners supporters – in the 47th minute. Playing in the number 10 role, McBreen threaded a neat pass for Simon to chase and the ever-willing striker in turn crossed low into the box.
Amini nominated for national award
by Ben O’Neill
entral Coast M a r i n e r s midfielder Mustafa Amini has been nominated as a finalist in the Sports Performer Awards for 2011 presented by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers.
C
Amini has been recognised in the ‘Young Performer of the Year’ category, along with four other athletes from varying sports, thanks to his performances in the 2010/11 Hyundai A-League, as well as efforts for the Qantas Young Socceroos and Qantas Australian Under 23 teams.
Amini, currently returning to full fitness under the watchful eye of Mariners head coach Graham Arnold, has enjoyed a stellar 12 months. Having made his Hyundai A-League debut, Amini has since appeared in a Hyundai A-League grand final, FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Colombia and fulfilled a boyhood dream by inking a deal to play for German heavyweights, BVB Borussia Dortmund. Loaned back to the Mariners from Dortmund in a win-win deal, Central Coast’s participation in the group stage of the 2012 Asian Champions League, Amini is now looking to build on his first season in the
Hyundai A-League. “I’ve been nominated for a few awards before however it is always nice to be recognised for these types of prizes,” Amini said. “I’d like to wish my peers good luck in the competition, but of course it would be nice for me to win.” The Sports Performer Awards are one of the most prestigious in Australian sport, recognising the very best performers from the previous 12 months. Unlike other major awards, the winner from all categories will be determined by an online public vote, with the highest tallied athlete taking home the prize.
Timing his run to perfection, Ibini prodded past Wellington custodian Tony Warner to put the Mariners a goal to the good. Having been defeated at home to Melbourne Victory last weekend, the Phoenix quickly shifted up a gear or two, knowing they could ill-afford to lose their third Hyundai A-League fixture on the bounce. And, in the 68th minute, Phoenix levelled proceedings. The wily Greenacre, pinpointed as a player to watch by Graham Arnold earlier this week, sprung the Mariners’ offside trap before finishing neatly passed Mathew Ryan, who in truth had little to do throughout the 90 minutes. Eager to claim all three points across the ditch, Mariners boss Arnold introduced Troy Hearfield against his former club in the 73rd minute. Hearfield’s introduction to the game was met with a chorus of boos by the Yellow Fever; however, this only seemed to spur the exPelita Jaya and Newcastle Jets ace on. And, in the 80th minute, the substitution would pay dividends for the travelling
by Ben O’Neill
Mariners. Finding space on the right side, Hearfield crossed low for Simon who lashed the ball home from close range. Despite a number of late raids by the hosts, the Mariners kept their nerve and controlled play to hold on to their slender advantage and claim their second 2-1 triumph in a row. The win truly kick-starts the yellow and navy’s League campaign. After the match, Arnold said he was proud with the way his chargers went about their business in difficult conditions at the ‘Cake Tin’. “I thought the players worked extremely hard for each other tonight and deserved to win the match,” he said. “Whenever you come to Wellington and return home with all three points, you’ve done something right, because the Phoenix are terribly difficult to beat here [at Westpac Stadium].” “Matt Simon and Bernie Ibini worked well and to their credit got the goals, but I don’t want to single out any individuals. “This was a true team effort.”

Melbourne Victory lucky to get away with a point
by Ben O’Neill Photos: Val Bridge:
he Mariners have remained unbeaten at Bluetongue Stadium this season, after a nil-all draw with Melbourne Victory on Saturday, November 4.
T
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock in what was an end-to-end Week 6 encounter, but ultimately shared the points in a nil-all draw. The later than usual early evening kick-off time clearly suited the Mariners, as they began the match with plenty of energy and a desire to showcase their slick passing game. It was an up-tempo performance from the home side, particularly in the early exchanges in the middle third, as they attempted to take the match to the visitors from Melbourne. It was only a matter of time before a warning shot was fired and in the 9th minute, it came from the boot of Bernie Ibini. Full of confidence after netting goals in successive
Matt Simon shoots for goal
matches, the talented marksman showed that he possesses not only a clinical finish, but deft footwork as well as he stood up the experienced Billy Celeski before getting a shot away. At the other end of the park, some familiar foes combined to create the
visitor’s first half-chance. Archie Thompson, who has made a habit of netting goals at the Mariner’s fortress, combined with a former yellow and navy stalwart in Tom Pondeljak, but the chance came to nothing as the attempted shot was pushed wide.

The match was largely played in the midfield for the much of the opening half, as both sides struggled to deliver possession to their strikers. Ultimately, it was the men tasked with patrolling the middle third who created the game’s most dramatic moment in the 29th minute. Utilising his speed off the mark and a classy show of skill, Michael McGlinchey was able to create enough space for himself to unleash a fierce drive towards Melbourne’s goal. It was a stinging shot that had custodian Lawrence Thomas well-beaten, but defender Rodrigo Vargas was able to throw his body at the ball and clear it off the line. The ball travelled as far as Daniel McBreen, who was lurking for just such an opportunity in his 100th competitive game in Australia.
McBreen headed the ball back towards the goal where it collided with the crossbar and dropped straight down. Under enormous pressure, referee Strebre Delovski elected not to award a goal and praise must be given for his decisive stance. Replays were inconclusive, but there was
enough evidence to suggest that the ball didn’t cross the line. It was one of those calls in football that could have gone either way and the Mariners can be credited for the way they took the decision on the chin and continued to play. After both scoring in successive matches and in identical score-lines, the partnership between Ibini and Matt Simon is developing nicely. Ibini showed great poise to deliver a well-timed cross to Simon, which won a corner and highlighting the culture that makes the club successful, Simon acknowledged his younger teammate. Melbourne’s best chance of the match occurred in the shadows of half-time. Matthew Kemp managed to evade his marker and was in the process of rounding Mathew Ryan, but was thwarted by an outstanding challenge from Alex Wilkinson that ensured that honours would be even at the break. The Mariners began the second half with the same sense purpose as the first.

Mariners
Mariners youth league draw with Jets entral Coast Mariners have drawn 1-1 with Newcastle Jets in the opening round of the 2011/12 National Youth League played at Pluim Park, Lisarow on Friday October 21.
C
A tight contest for the ball
Oliver Bozanic was the first to try his luck with a sizzling drive from distance that was well saved by Thomas, who gave a good account of himself in his first Hyundai A-League start to deny the Mariners on several occasions. Patrick Zwaanswijk turned out another composed performance in defence, but it was his contribution further up the park that almost led to the opening goal for the hosts. The Dutch defender dispossessed Victory and quickly fed the ball to Rose, whose resulting cross shot almost sneaked in at the far post in the 56th minute. The Mariners continued to push forward in the closing minutes in a desperate search for that elusive goal. McBreen and Pedj Bojic were unable to get their headers on target, while Troy Hearfield went desperately close shortly before fulltime. The Mariners can take heart from the fact they controlled the match for sustained periods and despite the result, can look forward to taking on Sydney FC next Saturday night. After the game, Mariners
Head Coach Graham Arnold said he was pleased with the effort of his players; however, he bemoaned their inability to take full advantages of the numerous chances they crafted in the final third. “I felt that any other night, it could have been a much better score for us,” Arnold said. “For us to be successful, we have to be more ruthless in front of goal and that is what I just said to the boys. “We had enough chances to win five games.” Arnold praised his side for restricting a talented Melbourne Victory outfit to only a few half-chances throughout the game. “I thought overall that it was a good performance. “Defensively, we restricted them to basically nothing. “Football wise, I thought we moved the ball around real well.”

Enterprising play through the heart of midfield by Amini released AppiahKubi, whose low right foot shot comfortably beat Jack Duncan in the Jets’ goal. Clearly inspired by his first goal in the National Youth League, Appiah-Kubi became a thorn in the side of the Jets defenders. His pace and sheer eagerness to contribute to the Mariners cause spurred on the Yellow and Navy as they sought a winner in the junior F3 Derby. Indeed, it was AppiahKubi who cut open the Jets defence to create an opportunity for Mitchell Duke on 70 minutes. Duke’s effort was only denied by some fantastic last ditch defending. Mariners captain Jimmy Oates had the final chance to score a winner for the Mariners when he launched a powerful shot at goal from 25 yards in injury time. Unfortunately for Oates and his Mariners teammates, Duncan was up to the task as he spectacularly palmed the ball away for a corner.

Kwabena Appiah-Kubi’s 59th minute strike cancelled out Chris Payne’s 18th minute opener for the Jets, as coach Tony Walmsley tinkered with his line-up throughout. After the game, Walmsley expressed his delight that after a “patchy” opening stanza, his players delivered a more fluent second 45. “It had its positive elements,” Walmsley said. “It probably didn’t live up to the expectations I had before the game, but it’s the first game of the season.” “Some of the boys started a bit tentative and a bit nervous, but to their credit, they came out in the second half with a much better frame of mind and delivered.” The Mariners started the
match the better of the two sides, with Mustafa Amini looking the most likely to break the deadlock early on. The Yellow and Navy fan favourite shot twice from range in early proceedings; however, his efforts were well smothered by the Jets defence. On 18 minutes, the Jets would score with their first real opportunity of the game. Lazy defending down the Mariners right side resulted in the ball being fired across goal, with Payne hitting a well angled drive past Mariners custodian Dylan Mitchell. The Jets then began to take ownership of the first half, with overage player Mario Simic launching a powerful effort over Mitchell’s bar in the 26th minute, while James Virgili had a shot well blocked by Sam Gallagher just five minutes later. Walmsley decided to bring on livewire forward Kwabena Appiah-Kubi at the interval and the tactical decision paid dividends for the team 15 minutes into the second half.

The spectator crowd was a little disappointing; however, the people who were there were entertained with some good bowling and good old fashioned banter. The United Kingdom was well represented, but they soon discovered that they were up against some formidable teams and with bulldog tenacity, they did not stop trying all day. “There is no doubt that the game of Lawn Bowls was the winner of the day and all this happened at the Club where we all belong, Toukley RSL Bowling Club,” said publicity officer Barry Middleton.

As the trophy holders for the past two years, the NSW RSL State Side will be competing against the other State Sides and no doubt, they will be all out to make it three in a row. An unavoidable late start on Saturday morning due to an early passing electrical storm caused the game to be cut back to 15 ends. The RSL side, consisting of five teams of four players, took to the green against a Zone 15 Representative side, which was skipped by Tony Scott (The Greens), Ben Callaway (Davistown, 3rd), Gary MacFadyen (Avoca Beach, 2nd) and

The RSL State Side then played on Saturday afternoon against a side consisting of bowlers from The Greens, The Entrance Bowling Club and backed up on Sunday morning for a game against the Central Coast Zone 5 RSL Side for a win in both games. The middle innings would see Commane take command on the mound and allow the Marlins offence to threaten, in the bottom of the 5th and 7th innings; however, not come up with the clutch hits at this stage. Commane, who struck out four in his 8 and 1/3 innings pitched, gave up a solo home run in the top of the 9th inning to see Macarthur lead 2-0. Macarthur tacked on another run in the inning to lead 3-0 going into the bottom of the 9th inning. The 3-0 lead looked to be enough for the Orioles; however, with 2 outs and runner aboard, the Marlins’ bats finally awoke and set up the thrilling finish. Central Coast improves to 4-5 on the season and now sit in 6th position on the SML ladder.

The Kings of the Coast he Kings of the Coast surfing event is set to be held at MacMasters Beach on November 19.
T
The Kings of the Coast is a team surfing event which was started by the Macs Own Boardriders and is now into its 6th year. “This is a huge event for all Central Coast boarding clubs,” said club representative Jeremy Cohen. “Anyone who has competed in or watched a
KOTC before would know how competitive and intense the rivalries are between the clubs on the day. “However, despite the rivalry and pressure, it’s still a really fun day and after the surfing has finished, all the clubs mingle and have a laugh at the day’s competition and comedy,” he said. The competition involves the MOB, Avoca, Wamberal, North Shelly, Forresters & Tea-Tree clubs. Each club enters 4 teams of 5 surfers in the 4 different age finals (120 competitors
all up). These finals include the Grommets, Juniors, Opens and Seniors. Points are awarded and accumulated after each final and the club with the highest points after all four finals is crowned ‘Kings of the Coast’. Each year, clubs try to out-do each other by being the loudest and most supported club. “I’d have to say that every year so far, the MOB has definitely been the loudest and a lot of the time also the most supported in terms
of spectators out of all the clubs even at other clubs beaches,” said Cohen. “This year, we should dwarf the other clubs, seeing as it’s in our own back yard. “We pretty much expect to see our whole club down there at Macs on the 19th, yelling and cheering for the MOB surfers. “Believe me, the clubs that give out the loudest cheers for their surfers often get a bit of bonus points from the judges through the sheer excitement factor, it makes a difference,” he said.

Umina SLSC wins Forster carnival
by Christine Lavers
mina has again triumphed at the 2011 Professionals Weekend of Surf for the fourth year in a row.
U
Umina placed with 420 points, Shelly Beach 231 points and Terrigal 182 points. There were over 40 Clubs competing on the weekend with 202 competitors for Saturdays Ironman Event and 330 competitors for Sunday. Saturday saw a tough Iron person course set to test all competitors in this early season hit out. Competition was fierce in age groups from U10 up to the Masters in the over 50s. Umina had over 20 competitors compete in the Iron person event.
The water temperature was measured at a cool 16 degrees, which made the event even harder than normal. Umina is very proud to say that all our competitors completed the course, nearly all finishing in the top ten. Sunday was the Carnival Day, with the Umina team being made up of 50 competitors, ranging in ages from U10s to over 50s. The rain pelted down and the cold wind blew all day to make conditions very difficult for all competitors. Water temperature was once again “freezing”, but once again, Umina dominated in all age groups with Black, White and Blue caps seen all over the beach.

Outrigger canoe team to race in the Cook Islands
e Ika Nui, the Outrigger Canoe Club located at Ettalong is thrilled to be attending to represent the Central Coast at the Vaka Eiva, an international Outrigger event, held this month on the Cook Islands.
T
Te Ika Nui was fortunate to compete last year and is thrilled to be given the opportunity to participate again this year. President of Te Ika Nui Yvonne Walters explained ‘With only 30 canoes on the island, paddling teams have to wait to be accepted to compete. “So, it is a privilege to attend not only to paddle in such an amazing location with extremely challenging conditions, but also to be able to participate in the many special cultural activities provided for the paddlers. “Last year, we discovered the islands use this event as a fund raiser and this year the focus is on education, Paddling teams ‘Adopt a School’ and are asked

(L to R) Lynn McGee, Gary Sing, Shayne Glencourse, Annette Marsh, Karen Schofield, Yvonne Walters, Steve Ginsburg, Geraldine Collins, Dave Jackson to support their school by taking educational resources for the students and spend time at the school for an opportunity of cultural exchange. “Once we saw a photo of our School’s students, we knew we had to do something very special for them.” Yvonne commented that the Te Ika Nui team has been training very hard in preparation for the races which include 500m Sprints,
a Short 12km race and the extreme 42km ‘Round Raro Race’ and now it’s time to also get organised to help our adopted school Takitumu. “Last year, we were totally overwhelmed by generosity of our Cook Island hosts, so this year we would like to repay by providing our Adopted School with some great educational resources. “The idea of involving the Cook Island community is fabulous and we would
really appreciate the support of our local Central Coast community to show them we also have a great community spirit.” The Te Ika Nui team would appreciate if anyone is able to assist us in providing educational resources – books, stationary, arts & craft etc. “Of course, help in getting the resources to Rarotonga would also be appreciated!

man has r epor tedl y drowned while rockfishing at Snapper Point on the Central Coast early on the morning of November 5.
A
Emergency services were alerted to the incident and Police, Surf Life Saving and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were responded. The victim was recovered by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, but unfortunately was deceased.
It is reported that the male was fishing with 2 friends in moderate conditions and was not wearing a lifejacket. “Again, we have seen another preventable tragedy, it demonstrates that rock fishing safety remains a big problem in NSW,” says SLSNSW Lifesaving Manager, Dean Storey. Since 2004, there have been 52 rock fishing drownings in NSW. There were seven rock fishing drownings in the last 12 months. This latest tragedy
continues what has been a very bad start to the season, bringing the total number of coastal drownings in NSW to 13, this time last year the figure was only 4. With a full summer still to come, Lifesaving Manager Dean Storey is urging the public to make smart safety decisions for themselves and their families “wear a lifejacket if rock-fishing or boating and swim between the red and yellow flags – these simple, common sense actions could save your life”.

Communicate in a particular way and all you’ll get is resistance and apathy; change your communication style and you will get enthusiasm and positive action - from yourself and in those you coach! William A. Ward said “The mediocre teacher tells; the good teacher explains; the superior teacher demonstrates; the great teacher inspires.” Motivation is an energy - an energy to do, to accomplish. In order to understand this energy a little better, take a few moments now to think of a specific time when you were really motivated - a time when you felt that energy to do, strongly. You will no doubt have found that you used one of two simple motivation strategies – a ‘towards’ strategy or an ‘away from’ strategy. ‘Away from’ motivation moves you ‘away from’ a negative happening or experience – it moves you ‘away from’ something you don’t want to happen.
‘Away from’ motivation often comes from an external source with the threat of some kind of punishment if you don’t do something. It may come from your coach shouting that you should concentrate harder, or you’ll never make the team. And so you motivate yourself to do whatever it is, because you don’t want those negative consequences to happen. Yes, this motivation works, but in a sports world, where the slightest edge could be the difference between first and last, is there a better way to motivate for peak performance? In contrast to ‘away from’ motivation; ‘towards’ motivation is a form of motivation which moves you toward a positive happening or experience, moving you toward something you do want to happen. The essential motivating part of positive motivation is the thought of this ‘good’ experience or result happening. Some examples of positive motivation are someone working out at the gym four times a week because they like the way they look and feel when they work out regularly; or working
to a study timetable because you want a good grade; or putting in 100% effort in training because you want to be in the starting line up for the game on the weekend. It’s useful to recognise that, while both ‘away from’ and ‘towards’ motivation can have important roles in motivating us to avoid personal danger, get out of bed in the morning, earn a living, keep healthy and fit, to achieve recognition in our sport and so on, there is a significant difference in the consequences of using each type of motivation in your life. ‘Away from’ motivation can result in excessive anxiety and tension, while ‘towards’ motivation tends to positively energise and arouse you. ‘Away from’ motivation causes you to think about what you don’t want, while ‘towards’ motivation gets you focused on what you do want. We do move toward what we think about, so it’s important to imagine and picture what we want rather than what we don’t want. It’s been identified that the top performers in any sport are invariably more ‘towards’ motivated than ‘away from’ motivated - what motivates them are strong desires for their dreams and goals and this is one reason why having goals is so important.

to Wollombi run, to be held on Sunday, November 20. Everyone is invited, in any sort of car, at $10 per car entry. Cars will meet at 9am
at McDonalds, Anzac Ave Tuggerah, for a briefing and departure, with guides to show the way along parts of the famous Great North Road.
antas Australian U23s Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar has selected three Central Coast Mariners players in his 19-man squad for the upcoming AFC Asian Qualifiers, for the 2012 London Games Third Round matches against Iraq and Uzbekistan.
Q
Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan received his first callup to the Qantas Australian Under 23s squad for this campaign, as did left side utility Brad McDonald. Exciting midfielder Oliver Bozanic, who has skippered throughout much of 2011, retained his place in the squad that will have a short camp together in Qatar, before they face Iraq at the Al Arabi Stadium in Doha on Wednesday November 23. An ecstatic McDonald said he was delighted to be called up to his first full Qantas Australian U23s squad, having been included in a recent National Team training camp. “I feel like I took my chance in Sydney [at the
training camp] and now it’s up to me to take my chance again, while I’m in the squad proper,” McDonald said. McDonald indicated that he would seek some advice from Mariners teammates Bozanic and Ryan, who have been involved in numerous National sides in the past. “They are both good. “Mat was unlucky to miss the [U20s] World Cup earlier this year and ‘Oli’ is the captain of the team, so I’m sure they’ll be able to give me a bit of guidance,” he said. Having drawn their opening match of the Third Round of Olympic Qualifiers against United Arab Emirates, Qantas Australian U23s Head Coach Vidmar knows the importance of these upcoming matches in the qualification process. “We need to get a good result from these two matches to give us the best possible chance of qualifying for the Olympics”, he said. “With injuries to a number of players we have used in the previous matches, we’ve selected a few new faces following our recent training
camp in Sydney. “It will be up to these players to take their opportunity and step up to the challenge ahead. “I’m confident that the boys are up to it,” concluded Vidmar. The Qantas Australian U23s will play Iraq in their next AFC Asian Qualifiers for the 2012 London Games match on Tuesday 22 November (Al Arabi Stadium, Doha, Qatar) and then Uzbekistan five days later at Parramatta Stadium in NSW. The teams in each group of the third round of qualifying play in a homeand-away format from September 21 of this year to March 14, 2012, with the winner of each group directly qualifying for the London 2012 Olympic Games Football competition. The three second-placed teams from the third round will clash in a playoff at a centralised venue from March 25 to 29, 2012 and the winners of this group will meet the representatives of CAF (Africa) for a berth in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
