Mariners fail to Roar
he Central Coast Mariners will take plenty of heart into Saturday’s return leg of the Major Semi Final tie with Brisbane Roar, despite a 2-nil loss in the opening leg at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday, Februar y 19.
T
Two goals in twenty minutes in the second half were enough to give the Roar the advantage going into the second match, but not before the home side created a plethora of chances. Head coach Graham Arnold said he couldn’t fault the effort and commitment of his players, but could only lament on how not taking chances can hurt in big games. “It was a game of chances,” he said. “We had more than they did in the first half in particular. “In big games you have to convert the chances you get. “They were just more ruthless in front of the goal,” said Arnold. “It was frustrating, we did move the ball to

side,” he said. Always keen to look for positives, Arnold said he felt that his charges can take confidence out of their performance, particularly their ability to cope with the rapid
Academy calls on young surfers he Central Coast Academy of Sport is calling on local boardriders clubs to nominate junior surfers who are looking to gain additional coaching and support towards their further development in the sport.

Local coaches Nick Leslie and Sandra English will
oversee the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s 2011 Grip surfing program, which will commence in early March with a weekend orientation camp at Norah Head. To be eligible for a scholarship position within the 2011 Grip surfing program, athletes must be male or female aged 13 to 18 years in 2011, a resident of the NSW Central Coast region and a current financial member of both a local boardrider club and Surfing NSW.
Scholarship athletes will receive expert coaching and support both in and out of the water with beach sessions and educational seminars scheduled throughout the seven month program. The program will also include regular surf fitness sessions with an accredited exercise physiologist along with the orientation squad camp at Norah Head and an end-of-program squad camp at Port Macquarie.
interchange of passes that Brisbane prefer to employ. “At the end of the day what we can take out of the game is our performance. “The boys can be proud of the effort they put in, and they’re disappointed obviously. “The game could’ve gone differently if we took those chances, but the two sucker punches really hurt us. “For the most part I thought we dealt with the Brisbane attack quite well,” said Arnold. The Mariners will now head to Queensland’s capital on Saturday needing to score three goals to advance to be the first side into the season’s decider. Striker Adam Kwasnik said he is confident that anything is possible within the squad. “They were great days back in season three and I definitely think we have the squad to do it again. We’re going to go up
there full of confidence and give it a shake. “The pressure is really on them, they are in front of 25 to 30 thousand people and they will want to produce, but we just have to go about our own game and if we get one early then I’m sure the panic stations will start to creep into their game,” said Kwasnik. Kwasnik, Alex Wilkinson and John Hutchinson are the only surviving members from the side which famously secured a 3-nil win over the Jets at Bluetongue Stadium in the return leg of their Major Semi Final three seasons ago, and Kwasnik said while it’s an important experience to take into Saturday’s tie in Brisbane, it’s all about keeping a familiar pattern in the build-up. “The boys that have been there from the very beginning know what is at stake and know these things can be achieved, but as a playing squad the boys are going about
their week as usual, and as I said we are quietly confident going up there to give it a real go,” said Kwasnik. The Mariners have little to lose as they throw caution to the wind this Saturday night, if they fail to score three goals, or force extra time with a 2-nil victory inside 90 minutes, they would host a Preliminary Final against either Gold Coast United or Adelaide United at Bluetongue Stadium next weekend, two teams the Mariners have already dispatched during the regular campaign. “At the moment they are the top team in the league but we are just going to worry about ourselves and we know what we have to do. “It is a big task and we’re just worrying about ourselves, we’ll prepare right and leave nothing in the tank at the end of 90 minutes,” Kwasnik said. The Yellow and Navy’s attacking triumvirate of Kwasnik, Daniel McBreen and Matt Simon have produced 24 goals so far in this campaign and attacking midfield dynamo Patricio Perez has chipped in with six from just 13 starts, but Kwasnik knows that three this Saturday night could prove the most crucial of the season so far. “Don’t forget, it’s a team game and there are 11 players out there plus subs, so we are very confident that as a team in general (we) can do a job, it doesn’t matter who scores the goals – of course strikers love to score goals – but the most important thing is the result and we’re going to go up there and give it a real shake,” said Kwasnik. A strong travelling contingent of Mariners Members and supporters are expected at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and the Mariners are desperately hoping to give them a happy trip home.

t last, a sports newspaper covering the entire Central Coast!
A
Following on from the successes of publishing the ever popular Peninsula News since 1999, Bowls News Central Coast since 2005 and recently, Gosford Central News, Ducks Crossing Publications has extended that same style and formula to publish a monthly sports newspaper for the entire Central Coast. This new publication, Central Coast Grandstand, only carries news relating to sport, at all levels, across the Central Coast and in this way, is able to provide a wealth of information for readers interested in sport. This includes federal, state and local government sports news, academy and association news, club news, events, registration days, scoreboard, tides, school sport, letters and anything relevant to sport on the Coast. It is a true newspaper and advertising content is restricted to a maximum of 40% of content. This is the first edition of Central Coast Grandstand. It is published monthly and distributed to all clubs, taverns, shopping centres, libraries, service stations, sporting venues, newsagents, sport related retail outlets and anywhere else, from Gwandalan to Mooney Mooney, where large numbers of people are likely to be. 18,000 copies are printed and it is published and distributed on a Thursday. In this way it can carry the previous weekend’s sports news as well as news about the coming weekend’s activities. Central Coast Grandstand is also a public forum for sport on the Coast. All residents, participants, relevant community groups, government and nongovernment organisations, businesses, employees and visitors to the area are encouraged to send in contributions, letters, notices on forthcoming activities or anything else that they feel readers will want to know about. Central Coast Grandstand is of great benefit to all sport on the Coast as well as to the health and welfare of all involved residents on the Coast. Major and minor sports all have a voice and junior, school and senior sport also has an opportunity for exposure and promotion to like-minded people. Businesses and other organisation in the area can also be some of the greatest beneficiaries of Central Coast Grandstand because they are now able to promote their products and services directly to their target groups and to young audiences that do not normally read other more general publications. If you are involved in a sport, or a business or organisation that has an involvement with sport, feel free to send us news or contact us for more information.

Young Mariners see off Roar he Central Coast Mariners National Youth League team consolidated second spot on the ladder after a 1-nil victory over the Brisbane Roar in tough conditions at Pluim Park on Saturday, February 12.
T
A lone Nick Fitzgerald strike in pouring rain was enough to seal the points in the final home match of the campaign. After having several players called up for Hyundai A-League duty and a heavy playing schedule in recent weeks Youth team coach Tony Walmsley was forced to make several personnel
changes. Included in the squad were Hyundai A-League squad members Rostyn Griffiths, Chris Doig, Matthew Lewis, Sam Gallagher and Michael Baird. There was drama for the visitors as well with Jacob McLean sustaining an injury during the warm-up leaving the visitors short on troops. Walmsley said he was pleased that his side was able to grind out a result, but concedes the conditions provided plenty of challenges. “The result was good but we have played better this season,” he said. “Although we never really looked in trouble throughout the match the conditions certainly didn’t help.
“The pitch was a little bumpy and with the rain for 90 minutes it made for tricky conditions. “We were not as free flowing as we have been, but still a solid performance. “Full credit to Brisbane, they travelled down with a young side and really took the game to us today. “We could’ve scored more in the first half as we had some really good chances, but in the second half they dug in really well. “At times they enjoyed territorial advantage over us as well, and made us a little uncomfortable. “In those types of games you just have to be able to grind it out, and we managed to do that this afternoon,” said Walmsley.

Poker machine technology to cost clubs millions ore than 100 representatives from Central Coast clubs have been told that technology the Federal government is demanding be installed on poker machines will cost local clubs more than $57 million to set up.
M
Local clubs met with Clubs NSW at the Halekulani Bowling Club to discuss the technology known as mandatory pre-commitment that Tasmanian Independent MP Andrew Wilkie is demanding in return for his support of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister. The meeting also heard that the forecast 40 per cent reduction in gaming revenue will reduce local clubs’ income by $69 million
annually. The meeting followed recent revelations from Clubs Australia at a parliamentary committee meeting into the gambling reforms that installing bet limits on poker machines will not reduce problem gambling. Clubs Australia stated the same technology had failed to reduce problem gambling in Norway, which is the only country in the world to have installed mandatory pre-commitment technology on poker machines. Norwegian studies showed problem gambling had increased during the past three years with gamblers switching from poker machines to the internet where credit card betting is allowed. Clubs NSW executive manager Ms Anne Fitzgerald said leading problem gambling experts have
expressed concerns that the technology is a waste of billions of dollars. “Australia’s leading problem gambling researcher Professor Alex Blaszczynski said that mandatory pre-commitment won’t reduce problem gambling and could actually delay addicts from getting help. “Central Coast clubs simply do not have $58 million to pay for this technology which will link poker machines at Central Coast clubs with those in South Australia, Queensland, and the entire country. “The only certainty from this technology is that clubs will close, jobs will be lost and club support for local sporting and community groups will end forever,” she said.
Rogic secures Nike contract eenager Tom Rogic has beaten 75,000 hopefuls and 100 finalists to be named the winner of a worldwide competition for a professional contract at Nike’s Football Academy in the UK after training with the Central Coast Mariners.
T
Despite having a Futsal background, Rogic had trained with the Mariners in the month leading up to the final of the competition in London, and Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said he liked what he saw. “Tom was recommended to us from the ACT and as soon as he came in we
could see his quality. “From day one we knew he was preparing for the Nike Chance and I sat down and had a chat with him before he left, saying there was a contract on the table should he have come back, but fortunately for Tom he has achieved his goal and I am absolutely delighted for him. “He’s a great kid, he fit in really well with all the boys and I’m sure he’ll go on to have a wonderful career. “Myself and my coaching staff are always on the lookout for the best young talent in Australia, we have proven since I took over that we have a strong youth policy, and we want to make the Mariners the club of choice for talented young footballers,” said Arnold.
Along with Rogic, the Mariners were represented by National Youth League goalkeeper Nikodin Matic at the global event, who, despite carrying a knee injury through the three-day trials was named alongside Rogic in the final 32 players at the Chance trials. Matic will return to the Mariners for the remainder of the National Youth League campaign after narrowly missing out on one of eight full time contracts at the Nike Academy at Loughborough University, while for Rogic, his adventure is only just beginning. “This is definitely lifechanging,” said Rogic. “I guess I’m moving to England!”

In its second year, the Rescue Day began as a way to conquer nippers’ fear of swimming in the deep surf and to teach them what to do when in difficulty. Participants are taken into deep water where they signal for assistance and are
then “rescued” by a variety of water craft. Tutorials on safety around power craft in the water will be conducted as well as a demonstration of traditional rescue methods like the belt and reel. Kids also have the opportunity to demonstrate their resuscitation skills and teach their parents what they have learnt through Terrigal Nippers’ Surf Life Saving Australia surf education program.
The program won the Gold Award at the NSW Sports Safety Awards in 2010 for outstanding safe sport practices. “This is one of the most exciting and educational program days that our Nippers participate in,” said Terrigal SLSC president Mardi Love. “It gives all children the confidence to know what to do in an emergency and how lifesavers operate in a rescue scenario.”
Central Coast Swans Academy start training he Central Coast based Sydney Swans Academy held its first training session at the Mingara Regional Athletics Centre on Monday, February 7.
T
The Academy caters for promising players from under-11s through to under16s and is a joint initiative of the Sydney Swans and Central Coast Academy of Sport. Central Coast based athletes are given the opportunity to train locally instead of having to travel to Sydney for all of their
sessions with the Swans Academy. The squad of twenty-one players train on Monday afternoons between 5:30pm and 7pm and regular Friday evening matches will be held at Lakeside Oval, Moore Park. The program will run for 22 weeks, excluding school holidays, from Monday, February 7, to Monday, August 8. Central Coast Academy of Sport executive officer Mr Luke Tucker said that although the players will be required to attend some training sessions at the Sydney academy, most of
their training will be held on the Central Coast. “This is a great initiative by the Sydney Swans and one that takes the Central Coast Academy of Sport AFL program to a new level,” said Mr Tucker. “For our local AFL players to have a genuine pathway to the highest level with the Sydney Swans is something we’re very pleased to be involved with and thanks to the support of Mingara Recreation Club, it is fantastic to be able to provide top quality training facilities in a local setting,” said Mr Tucker.

Roller Derby band night he Central Coast Roller Derby league is holding a band night and auction on Friday, March 4, at Ettalong Bowling Club from 7:30pm to raise funds for the new league.
T
The fundraising night is expected to attract 150 to 200 people who will bid on eight Derby Girls who will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. “They will get all your food and drinks for you and they make excellent conversation,” said Central Coast Roller Derby League media advisor Ms Linda Wales. A raffle will also be held with items including T-shirts, jewellery and a photo shoot from Linda Wales Photography. Ms Wales said roller derby was a women’s sport. “Bouts involve two opposing teams each with blockers and jammers and the aim of the game is to score more points than the
opposing team’s jammer by lapping the other team on the track, in a very exciting spectator sport,” she said. She described the sport as a mix of women’s liberation, tough sport, visual costumes and “out there Derby Girl personalities”. “This is a not for profit team. “Everything is done by enthusiastic volunteers, mostly by us Derby Girls, coaches and referees,” she said. Ms Wales said the Central Coast Roller Derby team planned to hold competition bouts, fundraising events and social skates in the future. “We have 50 girls registered in our league. “All are at different levels. “Some are ready to start bouting, and some are just learning to skate. “We are a relatively new league so we are just finalising our first registration and planning our first bout,” said Ms Wales. Gosford lifeguards take out challenge
osford Council lifeguards have claimed victory in this year’s Lifeguard Challenge, with professional lifeguards from Gosford and Wyong Councils competing for the 29th Cook Cup on Thursday, February 4, at Avoca.

Gosford Council’s lifeguard supervisor Mr Craig Healy said the event continues to demonstrate the commitment and skills of the professional lifeguards employed by both councils. “While the annual Lifeguard Challenge brings out that competitive spirit of both teams, it’s really about
showcasing the talents of the staff who patrol our pristine Central Coast beaches every summer,” said Mr Healy. “I am very proud of our Gosford team members for taking out the Challenge. “It was definitely a team effort and I’d like to extend my congratulations to all competitors in this year’s event,” he said. Wyong Shire’s acting lifeguard superintendent Mr Stuart Sohier said he was proud of Wyong’s performance. “It was another highly successful and enjoyable event held in good spirits,” Mr Sohier said. “Gosford dominated the first race which put us behind but we came back

Reef Project secretary Ms Sue Dengate. “Because of this, the Canberra was expected to go to ‘list’ straight away, but didn’t until recently. “This is probably the cause of the ‘hanger movement’ as the Canberra would have been subjected to some strain, particularly in the heavy seas of Bass Straight,” she said. “However, when the Adelaide site was chosen in 2001 by CCARP, we had been specifically searching for ocean floor that is all sand with a depth of two metres (minimum). “The Adelaide site is the only spot with this depth of sand and that is also why we can’t move the site to another location,” she said. “The depth of sand allows the vessel to settle in the sandy bottom, cradling the Adelaide and will assist in keeping her in the position that she is scuttled in,” said Ms Dengate. Victorian Artificial Reef Society president Mr John Lawler said the Canberra settled on the bottom after scuttling at six degrees, and in 18 months it leaned into the
The ex-HMAS Adelaide prevailing 10 metre swells to 23 degrees at the last measurement. “Engineers said it could go to 25 degrees, but the centre of gravity is now so low it would prevent the ship from listing further,” said Mr Lawler. “Those who keep suggesting the Canberra could fall over simply don’t believe in physics. “Divers have embraced the current list by saying it makes the wreck more real,” he said. According to Mr Lawler, Parks Victoria also recently released a warning about a crack which had been noticed in
a hangar wall. “Parks is a state government body which must be seen to be providing a safe dive site, and they are doing a great job,” said Mr Lawler. “The crack is minor, the hangar is still complete, and nothing is hanging off,” he said. “The Canberra was an excellent dive when it was scuttled and has only improved since. “There have been no diver incidents, every part of it is covered in life, it saved our industry through the GFC, and will continue to contribute to our local communities, and thus the whole state, for many years to come,” he said. Ms Dengate said the Adelaide will not have the same issues as the Canberra. “Given that we don’t get 10 metre swells here (let alone have them often) and given that the precautionary work ordered by the Tribunal has removed anything that could possibly become debris, the Adelaide, just like the Perth, Swan, Brisbane and Hobart, won’t have these issues,” she said.

Bowls Australia chief executive officer Mr Neil Dalrymple said the finalists should be very proud of their achievements. “Our inaugural awards night has been a long time in the making and it is a great opportunity for the
sport to come together and honour some of its brightest achievers both on and off the green,” Mr Dalrymple said. “The quality of entries was particularly heartening and narrowing the fields to just two finalists per category was no easy task. “Congratulations to all nominees and our deserving finalists.”

We live in a great sport-loving region from the playing fields of our primary schools to the sportsmen and sportswomen of our area who compete at the peak of professional sport. While national sport will always have a high profile, our local stories are the ones that bond us most tightly. I’m thrilled that through your publication, many of our community
sporting participants will be able to see themselves, their kids, and their friends in action playing the sport they love. As a Federal Government we want as many people as possible to get the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle that a sporting life brings with it. That’s a desire we’re backing up through a $872 million commitment to preventative health. So for many reasons Central Coast Grandstand is a publication worth
cheering for. My political campaign slogan is “On Our Side.” So as a member of the Central Coast’s sports-loving public, I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to Central Coast Grandstand for being on our side too. Warmest regards,
Great to have a new sporting paper for the Central Coast region as
there really isn’t enough sporting press around.
This is excellent news and the Central Coast Cricket Association will give
maximum possible support to the publication.

Special arrangements for publicity for Sporting Organisations As a community sports newspaper, Central Coast Grandstand publishes details of not for profit sporting organisations, clubs and groups and their events in and around the Central Coast in a specially subsidised arrangement. This applies to three different areas of the newspaper. 1. The first is a directory for listing organisations where the information is presented in an easy to use format with like organisations grouped to make them easier to find and it includes regular activity detail as well as
contact information. The cost of this listing for twelve months is a once a year payment of $50 and the organisation receives a free subscription to ensure that the information is kept up to date. 2. A separate subsidised arrangement exists for promoting specific one off events with information that applies only to that event. The lowest cost for these is where the information is placed as a public notice at a subsidised cost of $20 per edition of the paper (plus +). 3. Where a not for profit
sporting organisation is looking for more exposure than in the public notices, we offer a special discount where you choose a display advertisement size and we will add for free the same size space as booked at no extra charge if we can also add our logo and a short message saying “Sponsored by Central Coast Grandstand, a Ducks Crossing publication”. This means that for example, if you book a quarter page advertisement, we will give you a half page advertisement at the quarter page cost. If you are interested in this option, please contact us
for prices for the various sizes on offer. All Not for Profit sporting organisations that would like to be included in options 1 and/or 2 will need to complete the following form and return it to Ducks Crossing Publications together with the appropriate nominal payment where appropriate. Pre and post event articles and photographs are most welcome but we cannot guarantee that they will be published as this will be subject to available space and other priorities.
Organisation listings Organisation listings only cost $50 for an entire year and include a 12 months subscription to the newspaper. A copy of each edition will be sent to the postal address supplied. In this way, recipients will be able to check their entry regularly and advise us of any changes. The listing will remain in place for the life of each subscription and each subsequent renewal.

Lifesaver exchange our patrol captains from the Central Coast travelled to Sydney on the weekend of January 29 and 30 to participate in the Surf Life Saving NSW Lifesaver Exchange program.
F
Rebecca Hockley from Soldiers Beach, Bree Bowles, Josh Cole and Andrew Reid all from Terrigal were among 18 Patrol Captains who participated in patrols at Bondi, Coogee and Maroubra. For most the experience was an eye opener, on the day the group patrolled Bondi there were over 20,000 people on the beach, a busy day on the beach at home for most of the visiting lifesavers is 200. “The Lifesaver Exchange Program was a really great experience, far outweighing my expectations,” said Bree Bowles. “It helped me to better understand the role of Surf Life Saving in the community and I gained new skills and knowledge which I will be able to implement in my own club,” she said. The Lifesaver Exchange Program provides an urban patrolling experience to young patrol captains from regional branches by rostering them on busy Sydney city patrols such as Bondi, Coogee and Maroubra over a long
weekend. Through the exchange program, participants are also exposed to the different support services that the Sydney Branch has to offer such as the Offshore Rescue Boat and the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter. The program benefits the regional lifesavers by helping them to learn strategies and receive practical experience on how to manage high intensity patrolling situations that they may not traditionally be exposed to on their own beaches. In exchange, city patrol captains also get an opportunity to visit a country club for a weekend and mentor lifesavers and assist with implementation of new strategies and ideas. While the main aims of the program are to broaden the lifesaving experience of participants, promote the development of lifesaving skills and increase lifesaving standards across NSW, this program also acts as a fantastic way to reward young lifesavers who tirelessly volunteer many hours each season to keep the NSW public safe. The Lifesaving Exchange Program which has been running for the past three years and has had 54 participants take part was helped this year by a $5000 donation from the Kirby Foundation.

Paige has the States in her sights aige Melville has her sights set on playing college basketball in the USA and said she is well aware that strong performances at the under-20 national basketball championship could very well help her cause.
P
Melville, 18 of Tumbi Umbi, is currently representing NSW at the weeklong 2011 under-20 nationals which started in Maitland on Sunday, February 20. The Gosford City Rebels started the championship with a 78 to 76 win with Paige scoring 8 points. Paige was a regular starter for the NSW Country women’s side throughout the under-16s and under18s before making the step up to the under-20s state team last year. “NSW is divided into Country and Metro in 16s and 18s, but in 20s it’s just the one team representing all of NSW, so it’s even tougher to make the final team,” said Melville, who said she is looking forward to again representing NSW in the pivotal point-guard position. “There’s a lot of responsibility on anyone who plays as a point guard, but I enjoy that extra pressure and I am always doing my best to play well for the team,” she said. It has been a busy training schedule leading into the upcoming national championships, but since finishing her HSC last year, Melville has been more focused than ever and is training hard towards her ultimate goal of scoring a position with a college in the USA. “I’m lucky to have some good people helping me with contacts in the college system, so hopefully I can continue to play well and get noticed by the right person,” she said. In addition to her outstanding junior career with the Gosford City Rebels and her state team performances across the under-16 and under-18 divisions, Paige has also
over the past few years been a stand-out player in the Central Coast Crusaders youth league women’s team and has more recently been playing in the Waratah Australian Basketball League with the Hornsby Spiders. Melville has progressed through the Central Coast Academy of Sport basketball program, won the academy’s
overall female athlete of the year award in 2007 and now continues her involvement as a future stars scholarship athlete and as a role model to the younger girls coming through the basketball program. To add to all of this, Paige is also a basketball scholarship athlete with the NSW Institute of Sport, the Sydney Flames WNBL
development squad and has been a member of the under-16 and under-19 Australian squads. “There’s plenty of training involved, but the more hard work I put in the better chance I have of performing when it comes to major events such as this year’s nationals,” said Melville.

Judy and Shirley got off to a good start winning the first two ends but Rhonda and Di quickly changed that score on the third. The scores stayed close from then on with Judy and Rhonda drawing lead bowls throughout the game. The eighth end, however, saw Shirley put down two bowls with one just nudging the opposition to give her the end score of six up.
Di kept up the pace and by the 14th end was only two shots behind. By the 18th she managed to take the lead by one shot. “One can imagine how tense the girls must have been feeling at that stage with the score Shirley 17 and Di 15 on the 20th,” said Bateau Bay Women’s Bowling Club publicity officer Ms Betty Polson. “The final end was a cracker. “Judy drew within inches of the jack then Rhonda drew one of the top shots of the day just between the opposition’s bowl and the jack. “Di then drew a second and it looked as though it would be a drawn game with another end to play. “By the time the skips had played their last bowl Judy and Shirley were the winners with the score of 18 to 15,” said Ms Polson.

Ms Light has been involved in work with junior players over a number of years in Gosford and along the
Central Coast, being an active member of the Junior Committee and working in the Gosford Tennis Club’s canteen. “Betty has been a tennis stalwart for many years,” said Mr Murphy. “It would be great to have volunteers such as Betty in every club across the state, in a time when such volunteerism is unfortunately showing a decline,” he said. Ms Light has been previously recognized by Gosford Tennis Association for her service with a life membership. Ms Light has also been awarded the Red Cross Award for Outstanding Service to the Aged Community Award.

Thirty-three year old record broken thirty-three yearold record has been smashed at the Point Clare Public School swimming carnival at the Peninsula Leisure Centre on Thursday, February 10.
A
The record, set in 1978 by Mr Chris Olsen was broken by Jay Knowling in the 13-years 50 metre freestyle division with a time of 52.87 seconds. The age swimming champions were Lachlan Muir, Olivia Adams, Thomas Cuthbert, Ally Woutersz, Garion Verstegen and Jessica Davies.
Teacher Mr Steve Reyner said it was a great day for everyone, with even the lessconfident swimmers able to participate in races. “Everyone gets involved,” he said. “Lane one was set aside so even the non-swimmers got to go in while teachers supervised.” From the 210 students that participated on the day, 31 students were selected to go to the zone championships which will be held on Tuesday, March 8. From this, a zone team will be selected to go to the Sydney North regionals on March 15.

Elite Blue Size named top dog Artificial reefs information night
alga greyhound Elite Blue Size swept to victory in the battle for top dog honours at the Betfair 2010 NSW Greyhound of the Year awards during a gala dinner at the Sydney Hilton on the night of Friday, February 11.
C
The Reg Kay trained three-time Group winner tipped out western Sydneybased Blue Lorian and Newcastle speedster Lochinvar Marlow for the major honour. Elite Blue Size won the support from the panel of industry media who each lodged their vote for the award. He began the year in a blaze of glory with his three feature race wins all coming in the opening months of the year courtesy of the Group One National Derby as well as the Gosford Gold Cup and Maitland Gold Cup (both Group Two). There was cause for double celebration in the Kay
n information night on the sinking of the ex HMAS Adelaide will be held on Thursday, February 24, at the Crowne Plaza Terrigal.

Elite Blue Size’s breeder Julie Edmondson and owner David Kirkwood camp with Elite Blue Size also nabbing the Sprinter of the Year gong. An emotional Julie Edmondson, Kay’s partner and breeder of the greyhound, was on hand to represent connections along with owner David Kirkwood and handler Danny Woodbridge. “We’re ecstatic,” Woodbridge said.
“To win this award with the history of so many great dogs and for our dog to win it, we’re just over the moon. “I’d say the highlight would definitely be the National Derby. “He had setbacks leading into it and he was really well prepared, but he was patched up to get to the final and he ended up winning that,” said Woodbridge.
Kirkwood paid tribute to Elite Blue Size and trainer Reg Kay who have both taken the part-owner on the ride of a lifetime. “If it wasn’t for Reg we wouldn’t be here today,” he said. “We love him (Elite Blue Size) and he tries his heart out every time he races and he puts everything in for the public,” said Kirkwood.
The information night will be hosted by the Central Coast Artificial Reef Project and will outline the benefits that the Adelaide project will bring to the Central Coast. “This night will start at 7pm in the Ball Room and we have lined up some highly qualified key note speakers so that the general public can see the many benefits that the Adelaide Project will bring to the Central Coast,” said Central Coast Artificial Reef Project secretary Ms Sue Dengate. “We will also be able to dispel the many misleading
accusations that have been made about the project, along with clarifying some misinformation that has been given about the Adelaide’s sister ship, the Canberra,” she said. “We will be showing some footage of other artificial reefs around the world to demonstrate why we are so passionate about the Adelaide and the benefits that it can bring to the local marine environment and in particular to marine education and research. “The Adelaide artificial reef has real and tangible benefits to the marine environment and to future generations, not to mention the educational benefits that the Adelaide will bring to our community and these will be highlighted on the night,” said Ms Dengate.

T
The inaugural Malcolm Cusick Stakes, scheduled for Sunday, April 17, will be a Class 4 Hcp over 1200 metres, offering $50,000 in total prize money. “Malcolm Cusick was chairman of the Gosford Race Club for 35 years up until 2005 and remained a board member of the Club until his sad passing in June
2009,” said Gosford Race Club chief executive Mr James Heddo. “Malcolm Cusick and the Gosford Race Club were synonymous with the midweek feature Intermediate Handicap, which offered additional prize money and attracted quality fields through the 1980s and 1990s,” he said. “The Board feels that the implementation of this new race to our Gosford 3YO Guineas program is an ideal way to honour Malcolm Cusick and recognise his contribution to the success of the Gosford Race Club,” said Mr Heddo.

Club raises $2451 for flood appeal
Nine out of ten ain’t bad mina Cricket Club has registered nine wins out of 10 matches played throughout January yet they still face an uphill battle to qualify for the semi-finals in most grades.
U
Umina Cricket Club vicepresident Mr Warwick Egan said the first grade team threw away an excellent chance to move into the top six when beaten by Narara 164 to 95. “By far the team’s worst batting performance of the season, and with seven
batsmen being bowled, it magnified the extent of the debacle,” he said. According to Mr Egan, first grade will now have to win all three of the remaining games to qualify. “Two of these matches appear quite winnable, but the final match will be against competition leaders Wyong at Umina,” he said. “Second grade are on a roll and should qualify if they maintain momentum. “The three lower grades have it all to do, with three wins a necessity,” he said. Surf lifesaver wins Australia Day award cean Beach surf lifesaver Aaron Camp was awarded Gosford Council’s Individual Volunteer Australia Day Community Award at a ceremony held on Sunday, January 23, at Laycock St Theatre.
O
Mr Camp was nominated by his fiancee, 2010 Central Coast Lifesaver of the Year Ms Katie Dixon, for his volunteer roles in surf lifesaving. “I was thrilled to be nominated but did not imagine having a chance of winning the award, given the many dedicated individuals in our community,” said Mr Camp. Among Mr Camp’s roles, he is a patrol captain at Ocean Beach, surf lifesaving director of marketing, Ocean Beach surf lifesaving youth liaison officer, surf lifesaving Central Coast youth facilitator, Central Coast SurfCom operator and Central Coast duty officer
as well as a contributor to the surf lifesaving Australia 14 to 17 youth program development team. Mr Camp is a medical researcher studying vision and balance and organises career development activities for young researchers and students. He also coordinates and delivers brain awareness week activities to high school students on the Central Coast and is a partner in the CSIRO scientists in schools program. Mr Camp said his
activities revolved around personal and professional development and began 10 years ago when he had his first experience demonstrating in an anatomy class at the University of Newcastle. “I found I enjoyed passing on my knowledge and was good at finding ways to help students understand,” he said. Mr Camp is now a lecturer in anatomy at Sydney University. “I am very aware that I am not the best scientist or teacher or surf lifesaver, but what I really try to do is help and encourage those around me achieve as much as they can. “In that way my contribution might be that one of those people goes on to cure blindness or vertigo or saves a life on the beach,” said Mr Camp. “I have made many and varied mistakes and I am quite willing to highlight those so others don’t have to make them.” Peninsula News, 7 Feb 2011

“BACK” to School
So the kids are getting back in the swing of the new school year, however, with heavy bags and long lessons spent seated, it can make school a real struggle. A recent study published in the Australian Spine journal investigated the link between backpacks and back pain in school children. Selected statistics include: The weight of the average backpack is heavier, proportionally, than the legal load-bearing limit for adults; 79.1 per cent of children say their backpacks feel heavy; 65.7 per cent report feeling fatigued by the weight of their backpack; and, 46.1 per cent report back pain caused by their backpack. Not just looking at pain and poor concentration at school, but structurally, when adding an extra uneven load to a growing spine, it can have a great impact on your child’s health and wellbeing in the future. Therefore, for an item that is worn 5 days a week for the majority of the year, it’s important to make sure it is properly suited for your child. To avoid the back to school backache, the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia recommends: 1. Backpacks should be no heavier than 10 per cent of a student’s weight when packed; 2. Make sure the backpack is sturdy and appropriately sized – no wider than the student’s chest; 3. Put comfort and fit at the top of the priority list, rather than good looks; 4. Choose a backpack with broad, padded shoulder straps; 5. Use both shoulder straps – never sling the pack over one shoulder; 6. Use waist straps attached – they are there for a good reason; 7. Don’t wear the backpack any lower than the hollow of the lower back; 8. Don’t overload the backpack – use school lockers and plan homework well in advance; and, 9. Place all heavy items at the base of the pack, close to the spine, for a better distribution of the weight. On top of these recommendations and to really help your child get back into the school year and enhance their potential to reach and maintain their optimum health, have your child checked by a Chiropractor, like many other parents have. It was the second leg of the annual “Tryathlon” event and attracted more than the 600 participants that organisers expected. Former World Champion
iron man Guy Leech, cricketer Nathan Bracken, Central Coast Mariners Bradley Porter and Brady Smith, Terry Antonis from Sydney FC and former triathlon world champ Nicole Barry (nee Hackett) were all in attendance to lend their support to the participants, aged between seven and 15. “Everybody had a fantastic time and it was great to see so many kids getting involved and enjoying a fun day out with
family and friends,” said Guy Leech. “This isn’t about the fastest time. It’s about taking part, having fun and being healthy. “Everyone who participates receives a medal and goes home a winner.” The event, which was last held on the Central Coast in 2004, received support from the New South Wales government and Gosford Council. The Gliders fielded three new players in the tournament including Woy Woy player Ms Stephanie Van Leeuwen. “It was a great opportunity to learn new skills and experience playing at such a high level,” said Ms Van Leeuwen. “Unfortunately we lost the grand final to Japan by two points in the last 1.3
seconds of the game. “All the girls on the team were very supportive, along with the coaching staff and the Japanese were very welcoming,” she said. “We also visited a school to teach the teenagers there how to play and also a rehab centre where we taught the children how to play. “It was an amazing experience and to be able to share your skills with others was very special,” said Ms Van Leeuwen. Australian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball head coach Mr John Triscari said “I am extremely proud of the players who kept to our game plan and didn’t stop fighting until the very end of the game”. Carley recognised for sport award mina resident Carley Chapman has been awarded the Gosford City Australia Day Community Sport Award for her involvement in both Special Olympic sport and mainstream sport.
U
Carley is 22 years old and has Down syndrome but still regularly participates in a variety of sports including swimming, golf, 10-pin bowling, athletics, soccer, tennis and basketball. Carley’s Special Olympic regional and state sporting credits include swimming, athletics, tenpin bowling, soccer, basketball, sailing and golf as well as being voted in for the past two years as a member of the Special Olympics Central Coast Committee. Last year she won two gold medals at the National Titles in the 100 metre sprint and shot-put and was selected to light the cauldron with the Flame of Hope torch at Bluetongue Stadium. Outside of the Special Olympics, she is also involved in netball, dancing, golf and karate, has completed an athlete’s leadership program and has travelled all over the country to compete in sporting events. “Carley was very pleased to receive the letter from the committee of the Gosford City Council Australia Day Community Awards, inviting her to Laycock St Theatre to receive a certificate for her sporting abilities,” said Carley’s mother Ms Jenni Chapman. “At that time she didn’t realise that there were going to be overall winners in each category so was very surprised,” she said. Carley was nominated by her brother and sisterin-law, who according to Ms Chapman shed a few happy tears when she was announced the winner. “Carley wasn’t expecting
to be even nominated let alone to win the sports categories. “Carley stated that she could not believe that she had won an award,” said Ms Chapman. Ms Chapman said Carley enjoys sport and dancing as she is able to be herself and achieve her personal best, have fun, meet new people and travel to different places for competition. “Carley enjoys competing and is surprised with herself when she does win medals and ribbons. “Training helps with her fitness, self-esteem and definitely confidence, but she is humble as well and is very surprised at times when she does win events,” said Ms Chapman.

Changes to the Residential Tenancy Act
New residential tenancy laws commenced on 31 January 2011 with over 100 changes made, affecting both tenants and landlords.
and over 100 amendments are in an effort to create greater clarity in the legislation and reduce The new laws the number of disputes, according to NSW Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge.
So what does this mean for you, as a tenant?
Some of the main changes that will affect tenants in NSW are an extension of notice periods for tenants to vacate from 14 days to 30 days at the end of a fixed term lease and from 60 days to 90 days where the fixed term lease has expired. Tenants also have the option if they want to leave their property prior to the lease period ending where they can pay a break-free lease fee. The new laws also state that landlords must disclose material facts, such as violent crime or fire, to prospective tenants. To ensure you are aware of your rights and responsibilities as a tenant make sure you are given a copy of the new tenant checklist by your landlord or agent at the start of your tenancy agreement. For more information on these and many more changes to the Residential Tenancy Act visit the Fair Trading website at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au. Moore has ‘outstanding start to the season’
Ocean Beach places second in Rookie Challenge cean Beach Surf Lifesaving Club has placed second in the Rookie Challenge event held at Ocean Beach on Friday, January 21, from 2pm to 3pm.
O
All 15 clubs on the Central Coast competed in the event with competitors
showing the lifesaving skills they’ve learnt from patrolling the beach. The events in the Rookie Challenge were based both on theory and practical skills and consist of six children in a team. Participants were numbered and chosen randomly. They were required to
undertake tasks such as identifying and performing signals used on the beach, answering trivia questions about lifesaving and competing in team relay events aimed at highlighting the necessity of working as a team. Peninsula News, 7 Feb 2011
Sydney Swans address students at Ettalong wo Sydney Swans players Craig Bolton and Brett Meredith visited Ettalong Public School on Wednesday, February 9, to address students at an assembly and to hold an informal training session with year 6 students.
T
evin Moore from St Huberts Island finished second in the men’s 400 metre event of the Brisbane Athletics Classic with a time of 46.81 seconds on Friday, February 11, in this year’s Australian Athletics Tour.
K
Moore placed second to current national champion and fellow Commonwealth
Games relay teammate Ben Offereins who clocked in at 46.25 seconds. Moore’s athletics coach Mr Larry Spencer said he was pleased with Kevin’s performance. “This was an outstanding start to the season and it reflects the invaluable experience of Kevin’s international competitions,” he said. “We didn’t come back into work until November due to Commonwealth Games commitments, so we are
still in heavy work and in my opinion about three weeks away from being ready to race. “This next three week block is critical to Kevin’s season. “He will then have a further three to four races to polish his skills prior to nationals in April. “Kevin’s next race is the Melbourne Track Classic on March 3,” said Mr Spencer. Peninsula News, 21 Feb 2011
The players encouraged students to have a healthy lifestyle and eat a good breakfast and shared their passion for AFL, demonstrating a few hand passes and kicks. They also encouraged students to sign up with local AFL team, the Woy Woy Peninsula Swans and promoted the Swans’ Red Rookie Program, which provides kids with the latest team news, training tips, competitions and the opportunity to attend three
Sydney Swans home games this year. Two of the players’ greatest fans attended the assembly with their Swans shirts on. Mathew Walkerden in Year 1 is a member of the Swans and a regular at games. Jonathon Newton in Year 2 plays AFL with the Woy Woy Peninsula Swans and has represented the Central Coast with other local Auskick players playing at both ANZ Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Sydney Swans also conducted a coaching clinic at Rogers Park on Monday, February 7. Team co-captain Jarrad McVeigh, Andrejs Everitt, Paul Bevan and Luke Parker helped players with their passing skills, kicking and were available for signing. “I was really touched with the way the players interacted with the kids,”
said Ettalong Public School publicity officer Ms Rowena Newton. “They were so down to earth and very approachable. “In one session, Andrejs Everitt noticed my four year old daughter Amelia sitting by herself picking daisies, while the older kids had a go. “Everitt coaxed Amelia out of her shell and gently tossed the ball to her,” she said. “They were a striking pair. “Amelia looked tiny next to the other kids and at 193 centimetres Everitt was almost a metre taller than her and must have appeared like a giant. “It was incredibly moving to see such a skilled, professional player put himself at a child’s level and be such an encouragement,” said Ms Newton.
