Liberals commit to Pluim Park upgrade A
NSW Liberals and Nationals Government will commit $3 million to upgrade playing fields and facilities for grassroots football on the Central Coast, NSW Opposition Leader Mr Barry O’Farrell has said.
n the night of Saturday, March 19, the Nitro Circus blazed into Gosford and lit up the sky over Blue Tongue Stadium.

famous
for
their outrageous stunts and didn’t disappoint the sold out crowd. Their motto is “If you ride it, you jump it”. Staying true to this, their antics included launching from the 50 foot jump ramps, on motor bikes to snow skis
and even shopping trolleys. Highlights included the Super Xtreme wheel chair athlete Aaron Fotheringham from the USA who has no fear speeding down the ramp. Representing the Central Coast was X games
medallist Andy Buckworth from Lake Haven. All in all an action packed night left the crowd wondering what crazy stunts the Nitro Circus will come up with next.
Amini to gain European experience by Glen Lauder
entral Coast M a r i n e r s midfielder Mustafa Amini’s footballing education will receive a massive boost over the next two weeks, as he heads off to train with German Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.
C
Amini will spend a fortnight training at the club where former Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak has made a name for himself in recent weeks, and whilst there, will head to Munchengladbach to watch on as the Qantas Socceroos take on Germany on March 29. “They are leading the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern Munich and other teams in the UEFA Champions League so it’s going to be a
great experience, I’m really looking forward to it, so it should be good,” said Amini. The 17-year-old will then return home for a Qantas Young Socceroos training
camp in Canberra in early April, as the squad prepares for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia at the end of July. “I had a great experience
at the Asian Cup last year and the World Cup would be awesome if I got selected. “I’m sure the organisers in Colombia will look after all the teams and it will be a great tournament,” Amini said. Amini will then return to the Mariners following the World Cup, where he will rejoin his teammates for pre-season training as they embark on the Hyundai A-League 2011-12 season. “Musti has been fantastic for us this season, he’s still only a kid, and heading to Germany to train with one of the biggest clubs there will be a fantastic experience for him,” said Mariners head coach Graham Arnold. “Hopefully he does well for Australia at the World Cup in Colombia, and can come back full of confidence before the new season starts.”
Mr O’Farrell said the upgrade of Pluim Park to a state of the art regional sports facility would encourage increased participation in sport for people of all ages and abilities and enable the venue to host more events. “This is great news for grassroots football and great news for the Central Coast,” Mr O’Farrell said. “Central Coast Football is booming, with over 13,000 members of all ages and 23 affiliated clubs. “Central Coast Football has nurtured grassroots football on the Coast since 1963 and every weekend it stages more than 600 games. “With this upgrade, Pluim Park will be firmly established as the home of football on the Central Coast, increasing the number of events it can cater for and improve the match day experience for players and spectators.” The $3 million funding will provide for a full upgrade of playing surfaces on three fields including soil profile, drainage, irrigation and returfing, an extended car park, including drainage for water harvesting, new office space and amenities including a kiosk and change rooms and upgrades to the grandstand, seating, lighting, fencing, scoreboards and
other facilities. Shadow Minister for the Central Coast Mr Chris Hartcher said the NSW Liberals and Nationals were committed to providing community infrastructure for the region. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals strongly support local communities and we’re proud to announce this investment for grassroots sport on the Central Coast,” Mr Hartcher said. “Despite the best efforts of members, there has been little capital maintenance or investment at Pluim Park in the past decade, rendering the facilities inadequate. “Our commitment is in stark contrast to the Labor Party which has taken this region for granted.” Liberal Candidate for Wyong Mr Darren Webber said the upgrade of Pluim Park would confirm it as the home of football on the Central Coast. “Central Coast Football has been serving the community for almost 50 years and with this upgrade they will have a home base at Pluim Park they deserve,” Mr Webber said. “The success of the Central Coast Mariners has heightened interest in soccer in the region and this commitment can only help build participation in grassroots sport,” Liberal Candidate for the Entrance Mr Chris Spence said. “This announcement shows the NSW Liberals and Nationals are committed to providing this fast growing region with the community infrastructure and services it needs,” said Liberal Candidate for Gosford Cr Chris Holstein.

t last, a sports newspaper covering the entire Central Coast!
A
Following on from the successes of publishing the ever popular Peninsula News since 1999, Bowls News Central Coast since 2005 and recently, Gosford Central News, Ducks Crossing Publications has extended that same style and formula to publish a monthly sports newspaper for the entire Central Coast. This new publication, Central Coast Grandstand, only carries news relating to sport, at all levels, across the Central Coast and in this way, is able to provide a wealth of information for readers interested in sport. This includes federal, state and local government sports news, academy and association news, club news, events, registration days, scoreboard, tides, school sport, letters and anything relevant to sport on the Coast. It is a true newspaper and advertising content is restricted to a maximum of 40% of content. This is the second edition of Central Coast Grandstand. It is published monthly and distributed to all clubs, taverns, shopping centres, libraries, service stations, sporting venues, newsagents, sport related retail outlets and anywhere else, from Gwandalan to Mooney Mooney, where large numbers of people are likely to be. 18,000 copies are printed and it is published and distributed on a Thursday. In this way it can carry the previous weekend’s sports news as well as news about the coming weekend’s activities. Central Coast Grandstand is also a public forum for sport on the Coast. All residents, participants, relevant community groups, government and nongovernment organisations, businesses, employees and visitors to the area are encouraged to send in contributions, letters, notices on forthcoming activities or anything else that they feel readers will want to know about. Central Coast Grandstand is of great benefit to all sport on the Coast as well as to the health and welfare of all involved residents on the Coast. Major and minor sports all have a voice and junior, school and senior sport also has an opportunity for exposure and promotion to like-minded people. Businesses and other organisation in the area can also be some of the greatest beneficiaries of Central Coast Grandstand because they are now able to promote their products and services directly to their target groups and to young audiences that do not normally read other more general publications. If you are involved in a sport, or a business or organisation that has an involvement with sport, feel free to send us news or contact us for more information.

Ettalong fours win over Terrigal by Kevin Dring
n Ettalong combination has steamrolled its way to a convincing 2610 win over Terrigal to claim the ďŹ rst Zone 15 Fours title for 2011.
A
A good spectator crowd gathered for the afternoon ďŹ nal and were entertained by the two stand-out teams of the competition with some high class bowling. With Junior Champion Harley McDonald leading up front with excellent bowls and drawing applause from the gallery, the Ettalong skip and World Singles champion Aron Sherriff didn’t disappoint his followers with precision drawing and accurate onshots when the situation demanded and was ably backed up by another new recruit to the Club in Lee Trethowan (ex Asquith BC). In the lead-up to the ďŹ nal, 42 teams had taken to the greens at Ettalong Memorial and Wyong Riverside Bowling Clubs for the sectional rounds of the championship. The competition was of a high standard with the four
section winners moving into the ďŹ nals. Section 1 was won by The Greens team of Peter Lyddieth (lead), Peter Redman and Phil Flippence, skipped by David Buttery. They showed good form to defeat Ettalong 25-12, Halekulani 25-17, Avoca 2221 and a fellow Greens team 22-8. The powerhouse team of Ettalong skipped by Aron Sherriff with Harley McDonald, Lee Trethowan and John Roberts were just too strong for the rest of their Section 2 opponents by sweeping aside Bateau Bay 22-14 and Gosford 24-11, although they had a close encounter to win against Everglades 17-16. Section 3 was another win for The Greens with skipper Tony Scott steering his team of Glen Coleman, Andrew Parsons and Brendan Poidevin to victories over Gosford 17-16, Mingara 33-7 and another Gosford team 21-17. In Section 4, the strong Terrigal team led by David Neilsen with Alex Cameron, Brendon Myers and David Limbrick showed their class in defeating Avoca 25-15,
Winners of 2011 Zone 15 Fours championship (l/r) Aron Sherriff (skip), John Roberts (3rd), Lee Trethowan 2nd), Harley McDonald (lead) Toukley RSL 21-11 and Ettalong 19-16. This then set the scene for the four section winners to contest the ďŹ nals on the No 1 green at Ettalong Memorial BC on Saturday, January 29. On Rink 5 in one semiďŹ nal, Aron Sherriff’s Ettalong team continued their dominance with an all-theway win disposing of David Buttery’s Greens team 22-6
who called it a day on end 19. Finishing about the same time, David Neilsen’s Terrigal team in the other semi-ďŹ nal also posted an all-the-way win (22-11) over the other Greens team skipped by Tony Scott. This set the scene for the ďŹ nal. While the top grades were playing their ďŹ nal, the
Zone 15 President’s Reserve Fours ďŹ nal was played for those players Graded 5 and below, with Umina winning by one shot over Wyong. The Wyong Riverside’s team of Jason Jordan, Alan Morris and Pat Boreham, skipped by Shane Nancarrow, was pitted against the Umina Beach combination of Joe Ednie, Ian Jarratt and Vic Gauci,
skipped by Bob Penson. To reach the ďŹ nal, Shane Nancarrow’s Wyong team had recorded solid wins against John Cardy’s Avoca Beach team 21-15, Ashley Ayre’s team also from Avoca Beach 23-14 and Herb Lach’s Halekulani team 2519 to win their section. In the other section, Bob Penson’s Umina Beach team recorded strong wins over Stephen Thornhill of Ettalong 38-26, a close encounter against Ray Peck of Bateau Bay 28-26, a heart stopper over Leslie Bagnall of Ettalong 14-13, while having a comfortable win over Steven Balsdon also from Ettalong 31-13, to take out the section. The ďŹ nal was a close fought match between two evenly matched teams with the lead seesawing and the scores level on ends 2, 10 and 18. With Wyong holding a precarious one-shot lead after 20 ends, their chance of taking out the title slipped out the door with Umina holding a match-winning two shots on the ďŹ nal end with skip Bob Penson electing not to play his last bowl to sew up the title by one shot.

Barnes recognised as ambassador entral Coast Academy of Sport golfer Adam Barnes has been rewarded for his commitment and representation of the academy by being named as an ambassador for both Srixon and Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club.
C
Srixon and Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club are both supporters of the academy golf program and each offer an ambassadorship to a suitably identified Central Coast Academy of Sport golf scholarship athlete annually. Both ambassadorships don’t always have to go to the one athlete, but it is often the case that a stand-out golfer will fit the criteria that applies to both the Srixon
and the Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club role. And by stand-out, it’s not always just about what the athlete is doing on the course, it’s just as much, if not more, about how the athlete represents themselves, the academy and the program sponsors off the course. “Adam ticks all the boxes when it comes to
the kind of person you want as an ambassador or representative of your organisation,” said academy executive officer Mr Luke Tucker. “Each year we have the opportunity to put forward a recommendation to both Srixon and Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club for suitable athletes who fit the ambassador roles on offer.
After some last-minute paperwork issues, Wilkinson will fly out for the Eastern Chinese city, situated on the outskirts of Shanghai, where he will link up with his new teammates ahead of the commencement of the Chinese Super League season on Saturday, 2 April. “Everything has come through, it was a bit touch and go there for a while but off tonight and looking forward to the challenge. “It’s going to be a good experience and a new challenge for me, and at the same time it keeps me ticking over in the offseason,” said Wilkinson. The 26-year-old’s first taste of the Chinese Super League will be at
his new club’s impressive 61-thousand seat capacity Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre against Asian Champions League heavyweights Beijing Guoan, and he says he’s excited about the experience he’s sure to have in the world’s most populous nation. “I was there last week for two days but the Nanjing city is one of the biggest cities in China with six or seven million people, so it is a big city, and the team is new to the top league, they were in the second division a few years back and they have come up to finish mid table in the last two seasons, so it’s an aspiring club,” Wilkinson said. entral Coast Mariners captain Alex Wilkinson will get an early indication of what is required of the Mariners in the 2012 AFC Champions League over the next four months, after signing a short term loan deal with Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Sainty.
“In consultation with our golf program staff, it was a unanimous decision that we put Adam’s name forward for both ambassadorships in 2011 and to his credit, both Srixon and Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club agreed one hundred percent with our recommendation,” said Mr Tucker. As the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s 2011 Srixon ambassador, Barnes received a brand new set of Srixon clubs along with all the extras including a bag, balls, hats and clothing. Barnes will have the opportunity to give his new Srixon clubs and gear a good workout through a complimentary membership provided to him by Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club as their official Central Coast Academy of Sport ambassador for 2011.

President’s Fours final a nail biter
A-League 2011-12 season not expected to begin until October, Wilkinson says it’s vitally important for players to continue training and keep up their match fitness during such an extended offseason. “That’s the main reason I’m going, to have six or seven months of an offseason is just too long. All of the boys here are just going to be training with nothing to train for so going over there gives me an opportunity to play games and I’ll come back in July with the chance to have a bit of a break and be fresh for pre-season with our boys,” Wilkinson said. And the Mariners skipper will be returning to Australian shores sooner rather than later, with his impending wedding just weeks away. “The Mrs has taken it very well to be fair, everything is pretty much organised now, Brooke has got to do a couple of things here and there but we’re just looking forward to the big day. “I’ll be back two days before hand so hopefully everything will be organised and I can just roll in and turn up,” said Wilkinson.
entral Coast Academy of Sport future star Matt Dawson has been selected in a 32-man squad for the NSW under-21 field hockey side.
C
Dawson, who is just 16, competed with a group of much older players at the final selection trials on Sunday, March 20 and will compete again on Sunday, April 3. Dawson’s performances in the recent NSW country verse city challenge earned him his spot in the 32man squad and he said
he’s looking forward to the opportunity to progress further in the selection process. “I’ll be a bit nervous
competing for a spot against the older guys, but it should be a great experience and one that I’m very much looking forward to,” he said.

Ryan, young footballer of the Year by Glen Lauder
he Central Coast Mariners’ teenage goalkeeper Mathew Ryan has taken out the NAB Young Footballer of the Year honour at the Hyundai A-League Awards held in Sydney on Sunday, March 6.
T
Media advisor Mr Glen Lauder said since being thrust into the Mariners starting side back in round four following a season ending injury to Jess Vanstrattan, Ryan has shown a maturity and confidence well beyond his 18 years to produce 13 clean sheets in 29 matches in 2010-11, stamping himself as one of the country’s premier ‘keepers,” said Central Coast mariners. “Arnie presented me with the opportunity at the beginning of the year due to the unfortunate luck with Jess, and I’d like to think I haven’t taken a backward step,” said Ryan. “There have been a couple of little hiccups along the way but credit to myself and the coaching staff I have been able to move on to bigger and better things, and my reaction afterwards has been pretty sound,” he said.
A Blacktown City junior, Ryan came through the Westfield Sports High system, and was a member of the Mariners Premiership winning National Youth League team in 2009-10 before being added to the Hyundai A-League squad this season, where he completed his stellar rise with a nomination for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year in December before picking up the ultimate prize. “I didn’t expect to be playing at all this year, I wake up every morning and keep pinching myself, so to be standing here tonight, it’s a dream come true,” Ryan said.

McKinna to review coaching by Glen Lauder
entral Coast M a r i n e r s Football and C o m m e r c i a l Operations manager Lawrie McKinna headed to the Mariners’ Chinese sister club Chengdu Blades on Friday, March 18, to help with a review of its coaching structure, and to oversee its current practices, following the recent departure of the club’s former manager.
C
The move comes amid strengthening ties between the two clubs, along with English Championship club Sheffield United. “The Chinese Super League starts in a couple of weeks and Sheffield United has asked me to go over and have a look at the coaching set-up,” said McKinna. “We have a great relationship with Chengdu and I’m only too happy to help out. “I’ll be heading over tonight and taking my laptop with me so I can continue on with a lot of work I’m currently undertaking with both the Mariners Football Club and the Centre of Excellence development.” McKinna’s vast coaching experience makes him the ideal man to help Chengdu through their current

Central Coast Bears celebrate NRL season launch
Rose wins Mariners Medal
by Louise Duff
riday, March 11, saw almost 200 people attend Terrigal’s Crowne Plaza for the Central Coast Bears luncheon to mark the 2011 NRL season launch.
F
The luncheon provided fans and sponsors alike with an opportunity to celebrate the launch of the football season, while showing their support for the Central Coast Bears in the team’s bid to enter the National Rugby League competition. “The sold out event was a demonstration of just how passionate the community is about having an NRL team on the Central Coast,” said Central Coast Bears chief executive officer Greg Florimo. “Community backing has been a major pillar in our bid to enter the draw and Friday’s event was proof that support is stronger than ever,” he added. The event saw a panel
of rugby league veterans, Michael Buettner, Bradley Clyde and Billy Moore, discuss their experiences in the game and predictions for the 2011 season. “It was great to see such reputable Rugby League legends turning out to share their love of the game and continue to reinforce their support for the Central Coast Bears,” said Mr Florimo. The Bears are also offering businesses and residents a final opportunity to be a part of their bid to join the national competition.
Almost 75 foundation sponsorships have been received by the Central Coast Bears since their inception in August 2009. With less than 30 places remaining, Mr Florimo has invited members of the Central Coast community to be part of the team in the lead up to the major announcement including Gosford Council who have accepted the invitation. “We have been overwhelmed by the support that the Central Coast Bears have received to date
and simply could not have foreseen the team’s huge public backing,” said Mr Florimo. “It is because of this strong community enthusiasm and passion, that we would like to offer residents and small businesses the opportunity to become foundation members of the team,” he added. By providing a $5000 sponsorship to the Central Coast Bears, foundation members will have the opportunity to become a part of the team as it endeavors to become licensed in the National Rugby League. “The Central Coast lives and breathes rugby league and has produced a host of talented players from Graham Eadie and Matt Orford, to David Fairleigh and more recently, Tim Moltzen,” said Mr Florimo. “To become a part of a Central Coast team as it makes this historic bid will be an exciting and unique experience,” he added.

CCCA Executive Officer Aidan Cuddington said the selectors had a difficult job but he is confident the local side will match it with an ACA Masters outfit brimming with international experience.
“The guys we’ve picked are all strong performers for their clubs and will be jumping out of their skins playing against names like Terry Alderman, Greg Matthews and Jimmy Maher,” he said. “We’ve got some very talented young players and others with more experience, and they’ll be well led by Mike Harvey from the The Entrance Cricket Club. “We’ve also included former Woy Woy opener Tristan McDonald, who has played his first season with Northern Districts at Sydney Grade level and represented NSW Under 19s. “He will add some class to the top of the order.” Terry Alderman, Greg
Matthews, Jimmy Maher, Ryan Campbell and Greg Ritchie will be among the host of cricket legends to take on the Central Coast Cricket Association team. MILO in 2CRICKET clinics will also be staged on Monday, March 28, as part of the Tour. Entry for both the Twenty20 clash and clinics is free. The Tour is supported by the Wyong Shire Council and Central Coast Cricket Association. The Masters program has been developed by the ACA, the official representative body of past and present players, with a focus on the promotion of cricket. local cricket associations to raise funds and identify local talent through a scholarship program. “Our tours have proved to be a real hit with communities in the sporting areas we have visited to date,” he said. “The Central Coast is a very strong sporting region, so we hope to build some excitement around the tour and continue to raise the profile of cricket in the community.” The tour program has been primarily funded by the current first-class and Australian players as part of their commitment to developing the game in regional Australia and engaging with local communities.
entral Coast Mariners leftback Joshua Rose has capped an outstanding season in the Yellow and Navy, by being crowned the Mariners Medalist for 2010-11.
C
Rose arrived at the Mariners prior to the commencement of season six, following a stint in the Romanian top-flight, and was a standout throughout the campaign, to be voted the season’s best by his teammates in a 3-2-1 voting system.
Rose scored three goals from left back and has been credited with seven assists, many as a result of his trademark speedy runs down the left flank. Also honoured at the function at Quay West Resort Magenta Shores was golden boot Matthew Simon, who held off Adam Kwasnik by a solitary goal to finish on 11 goals for the campaign and win the title for the third year in a row. Mathew Ryan was also honoured following his NAB Young Footballer award and the Joe Marston Medal for man of the match in the Grand Final.

Bears promised $3.5 million p p o s i t i o n leader Mr Barry O’Farrell has announced that a NSW Liberals and Nationals Government would deliver $3.5 million toward a training and administrative headquarters to help the Central Coast Bears’ bid to join the NRL, if elected on March 26.
O
This announcement comes after Mr O’Farrell committed in January to help secure the Mount Penang site on the Central Coast for the establishment of a Central Coast Bears headquarters, by reserving the NSW Government owned site as a special sporting precinct. Mr O’Farrell met with Bears representatives, including CEO Mr Greg Florimo, head of Football Operations Mr David Fairleigh and director Mr Ken Sayer at the site along with Liberal candidate for Gosford Cr Chris Holstein, Liberal candidate for The
Entrance Mr Chris Spence, Liberal Candidate for Wyong Mr Darren Webber and Liberal Member for Terrigal Mr Chris Hartcher. “The Central Coast loves its sport and the region deserves to have its own football team,” Mr O’Farrell said. “This funding will help deliver the training and administrative facilities the Central Coast Bears need, so they can present the NRL with a strategic plan in mid 2011. “The $3.5 million will be used to help deliver a sporting precinct, including state of- the-art training and recovery facilities, a 50 metre outdoor pool, indoor pool and basketball centre. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals are committed to working with the Central Coast community and the Bears proponents to push for a local NRL team. “The Central Coast Liberal team have made it clear to me how important a rugby league team would be here and I’m prepared to do everything I can to back it in,” said Mr O’Farrell. Mr Florimo welcomed the

support of the NSW Liberals and Nationals. “This announcement from Barry O’Farrell and the NSW Liberals and Nationals is a massive boost for the club and our bid. “It is another step forward as we finalise our great package to present to the NRL,” Mr Florimo said. “We have a stadium, great financial backing and the overwhelming support of the community and now we are going to have somewhere we can base ourselves as well. “Today’s (28 February) announcement will also be a huge recruitment tool for us to be able to go out into the marketplace for players knowing we will have a world-class training facility to attract them. “Hundreds of thousands of spectators have visited Blue Tongue Stadium to attend Rugby League events during the past ten years and a local NRL team is expected to significantly increase the economic benefit brought to the Coast by major sporting events,” said Mr Florimo. Labor candidate for Gosford Ms Katie Smith said she is outraged at the Liberal party’s announcement. “This private company is not even in the NRL yet and he’s giving them $3.5 million for training facilities which include a pool. “At the same time he is telling our junior players on the Peninsula that there is no money to repair toilet facilities at Umina oval. “This shows Chris Holstein is more interested in grandstanding than local issues,” said Ms Smith.

Senior side fails to fire at Wallsend by Kevin Dring
The only Central Coast team to win both games at the Wallsend Senior’s Trial David Buttery, Dick Love, Allan Rhodes and Dave Arnoult ix rinks of senior fours went off to Wallsend Bowling Club on Monday, March 7, for the first trial game of the year.
S
The ultimate objective is for the Zone Selectors to narrow these teams down to the best three rink combinations to represent the Zone at the State InterZone Sides championship to be played at Taren Point and Grandviews from July 19 to 21 2011. It is from this State championship event that the State NSW Senior team is ultimately selected and last year David Buttery and John Roberts were the only two Zone 15 representatives to gain such an honour. So this day trip to Wallsend was more than just a social outing, it was
the first step in this selection process. The morning game against the Newcastle “A side” was played under threatening skies and a brief shower of rain before the start of play took any pace out of the green. Dave Limbrick’s team of Jon Luxford, Allan Olsen and Dennis McDevitt recorded the best margin win 21 to 8 over George Dawes team with David Buttery’s foursome of Dave Arnoult, Allan Rhodes and Dick Love not far behind with a 17 to 11 win over the evergreen Neville Downes. Dick Thornton’s team of Alex Gemmel, Alex Cameron and Phil Flippence was the only other Central Coast team to record a win 16 to 15. While the other rinks skippered by John Roberts and Geoff Crisp were
competitive, the Brian Burrows combination of Ken Hope, Ken Mounter and Lex Lamont were outplayed by former NSW State player Sam Laguzza 26 to 6 which tipped the master scoreboard in Newcastle’s favour 101 to 92. The afternoon game against Newcastle’s “B Side” should have produced better form but a dead slow track had the Central Coast players struggling from the outset and it was again left to David Butterys’ team of Dave Arnoult, Alan Rhodes and Dick Love to salvation some prestige with the one and only rink win 24-13. The master scoreboard 121 to 89 in favour of Newcastle was not a pretty sight and will give the selectors plenty to think about before their next trial against Zone 9.

Central Coast a sporting playground ong r atulations on a wonderful sporting publication.

To me the Central Coast is a sporting playground equal to any in this great nation. Your publication will no doubt help prove this. Sport, in whatever form gives young people and the young at heart values that are increasingly diluted in our individually focused world. In sport and teamwork we
find a meaningful balance to the cult of self. The rules and directions, coaching, camaraderie, discipline, physical and mental fitness and above all an opportunity to work together are character building. We may not always win the race or even get a score, but we do win every time
C
we push ourselves, every time we help a fellow player, every time we respect the referee (however good the decision), get on with it and play by the agreed rules. Your well conceived newspaper will do much to celebrate and inform us about the great things that people do. Whether they coach, play, administer or organise we will appreciate them a little more thanks to this publication.
I’m sure advertisers that are looking to support these positive values will find the publication attractive. I hope it will also be a tribute to our wonderful young people who get involved in sport. Together with the young musical and cultural talent on the Central Coast we all have reason to look forward to a bright and exciting future. David Abrahams, Youth Connections

Both the senior elite and open water squads will be selected in the near future. The junior development program orientation will be held at The Bay Sports Club on Saturday, March 26, followed by the squad’s first training session at Mingara One Aquatic Centre in the afternoon. The nine month program will run through until November and will include regular training sessions totalling over 15 hours of “in-the-water” training per athlete, while educational and personal development sessions will also be
incorporated. In addition to training and education sessions, the junior development squad will participate in a number of meets including the 2011 Winter Coast and Valley Championships, the 2011 Winter NSW State Age Championships, the 2011 Central Coast Academy of Sport Monaco Skins Meet and the 2011 Summer Coast and Valley Championships. At Ettalong on the Tuesday a decision was taken to play one game only per day due to the extreme weather conditions. This resulted in the quarter finals being played on Wednesday morning and the semi finals being played on Thursday morning at Avoca Beach Bowling Club. Results were P. The final was played at Gosford City on Friday 4th, once again under very hot and steamy conditions. Both teams were neck and neck for most of the game with The Entrance just able to keep their noses in front winning by three shots. The game was played in good spirit and sportsmanship and as is often the case it is a shame there can’t be two winners because the standard of play was excellent from both teams. Central Coast travel to Lismore Central Coast Rugby C are victorious

entral Coast opened up its 2011 campaign in the NSW Country Rugby Championships with a tight win against Far North Coast at Woy Woy Oval on Saturday, March 19.

The final score was 13 points to 10, after the halftime score was only seven points to nil in favour of the home side. The opening 20 minutes saw both teams try to gain the ascendancy in the forward exchanges. The Central Coast side had several early attempts at penalty goals from relatively easy positions but it was the Far North Coast who opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a penalty goal. This 3-0 scoreline remained the score until just prior to half time when the Central Coast kicked a penalty goal through centre Tim Hill.
Far North Coast opened the second half in full attack. They made several good raids in the opening minutes on the Central Coast line but the Central Coast’s defence kept them out. It was Central Coast who scored first in the second half. Centre Tim Hill kicked his second penalty goal in the sixth minute to take the Central Coast to a six points to three lead. Both teams had chances to post tries at the midway point of the second half but none were readily coming. Both teams performed well and the match could have gone either way. It was a great start for the Central Coast team in the NSW Country Championships who will go into next week’s Country Championship Finals Weekend. They will play the semifinal of the Caldwell Cup next Saturday afternoon in Lismore.
Defender to switch leagues
entral Coast will play Central North on Saturday, March 26, in the rugby semi-final of the Caldwell Cup, the shield representing the pinnacle in NSW Country Rugby.
It is a hectic weekend with two full length matches. Saturday sees the semifinal of the NSW Country Championship and the winner of the two semifinals meet on Sunday in the Championship Final. Central Coast has had the upper hand over Central North in recent years but every year it all changes. Central North must have played well to win their qualifying game in Wollongong last Saturday when they defeated Illawarra by 27 points to 20. That was a good win and makes the task of the Central Coast team quite difficult. The local side had a close win over Far North
he Central Coast Mariners have confirmed that defender Chris Doig has left the club to join Indonesian Super League side Pelita Jaya with immediate effect. Doig’s playing time during the Hyundai A-League 2010-11 season has been limited following the arrival of Dutchman Patrick Zwaanswijk and leaves with the club’s best wishes as he moves on to the opportunity of regular game time in one of Asia’s biggest leagues. “I couldn’t have been more impressed with Doigy’s attitude this season, while not getting too much game time he has been a true professional around the boys and the way he has conducted himself has been a real credit,” said Mariners head coach Mr Graham Arnold. “It’s sad to see a guy like that move on, but we all understand the need for footballers to be playing
Emile Thomas being key performers. They will have to gain dominance in this area so that the backline can make real inroads. Centre Tim Hill and outside back Dennis Raft played well last Saturday and will be key players this Saturday. It is a long trip to Lismore but these types of trips can bring a team together. Central Coast was
defeated in the Final of the Championship last year and want to go one step further in 2011. It is very difficult to rate the opposition and also to plan for these fixtures because very little is known of the opposing teams. The Central Coast team is hoping to be in the big one on Sunday and to be able lift the Caldwell Cup in victory.

Doig played 26 games for the Mariners during his two seasons at Bluetongue Stadium, after arriving from English League One side Northampton Town prior to the 2009-10 season, however, injury frustratingly punctuated much of his time with the Yellow and Navy. The 30-year-old linked up with his new club in the beginning of March, and will therefore not play any further part in the Mariners Finals Series campaign.
Semi-Finals: P.Murphy, A.Koutsellis [Terrigal] defeated L.Cross, A.Tucker [Everglades] L.Williams, T.Ward [Ettalong Mem.] defeated S.Gemmell, P.Thornton [The Entrance] Friday 25th saw the final being played at Gosford City in very pleasant conditions. Both teams played tremendous shots with the bowls being close to the jack on most ends. The end score of 27 to 10 does not depict the great bowls that were played from all players. Congratulations to the winners Lauren Williams and Tracey Ward from Ettalong Memorial.
(l to r) Lauren Williams, Tracey Ward - Ettalong Memorial Lauren and Tracey were runners up in 2010 and have had a well deserved win in
2011. They have played tremendous bowls and have
been very focussed this week. They will now go on to play in the Group Playoffs to be played in the Hunter District commencing Monday July 25. Congratulations must also go to Lorraine Murphy and Tess Koutsellis as runners up. We have seen some great bowling from these two ladies over the week.

Special arrangements for publicity for Sporting Organisations As a community sports newspaper, Central Coast Grandstand publishes details of not for profit sporting organisations, clubs and groups and their events in and around the Central Coast in a specially subsidised arrangement. This applies to three different areas of the newspaper. 1. The first is a directory for listing organisations where the information is presented in an easy to use format with like organisations grouped to make them easier to find and it includes regular activity detail as well as
contact information. The cost of this listing for twelve months is a once a year payment of $50 and the organisation receives a free subscription to ensure that the information is kept up to date. 2. A separate subsidised arrangement exists for promoting specific one off events with information that applies only to that event. The lowest cost for these is where the information is placed as a public notice at a subsidised cost of $20 per edition of the paper (plus +). 3. Where a not for profit
sporting organisation is looking for more exposure than in the public notices, we offer a special discount where you choose a display advertisement size and we will add for free the same size space as booked at no extra charge if we can also add our logo and a short message saying “Sponsored by Central Coast Grandstand, a Ducks Crossing publication”. This means that for example, if you book a quarter page advertisement, we will give you a half page advertisement at the quarter page cost. If you are interested in this option, please contact us
for prices for the various sizes on offer. All Not for Profit sporting organisations that would like to be included in options 1 and/or 2 will need to complete the following form and return it to Ducks Crossing Publications together with the appropriate nominal payment where appropriate. Pre and post event articles and photographs are most welcome but we cannot guarantee that they will be published as this will be subject to available space and other priorities.
Organisation listings Organisation listings only cost $50 for an entire year and include a 12 months subscription to the newspaper. A copy of each edition will be sent to the postal address supplied. In this way, recipients will be able to check their entry regularly and advise us of any changes. The listing will remain in place for the life of each subscription and each subsequent renewal.

Golfing year kicks off
An inspiration to us all
by Bob Bourke
he 2011 golfing year on the Coast kicked off with the Singles Championship at Toukley Golf Club in January which saw Senior and Junior (under 18) playing over 36 holes and 18 holes for Masters (over 50). David Morgan from Wyong Golf Club took the title of District Champion with a score of 139, five under par for 36 holes “David’s score could have been even better had he checked his bag before teeing off as he discovered on the first hole he had too many clubs in the bag and called the mandatory two shot penalty on himself,” said central Coast District Golf Association honorary secretary Mr Ian Elliott. Andrew Bond, also from the Wyong club shot a second round 69 three under par to capture the runners up prize.
Jason Butt, playing on his home course, returned a score of 145 to take the Junior title by two shots from club mate, Jarrad Hayes. Jason’s return to the winners circle was welcomed by all golfers on the Coast as he underwent major spinal surgery last year. In the Masters event extra holes were necessary as after the stipulated round both Michael Gray from Magenta Shores and Trevor Walker from Everglades finished with a score of 75. Michael proved too strong in the playoff and took the title on the first extra hole. The 2011 Pennant series has reached the halfway mark and at this stage the tussle for a spot in the finals is too close to call with upwards of five clubs vying for the two final berths in the A grade competition. “There have been many close finishes in the preliminary rounds but a standout performer at this stage of the competition

A tribute to Patricia Reynolds Volunteer of the Year runner-up
by Barry Middleton
by Lesley Swales
t the Inaugural Bowls Australia Awards night held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne on Saturday February 12, Patricia Reynolds Vice President NSWWBA and former President CCDWBA was one of two finalists for Volunteer of the Year.
A
This was evident when Toukley RSL recently held the finals for the Men’s Fours Championships. This particular match created a lot of interest for both bowlers and non bowlers alike, for it was the first time in the history of the club that the fours final was contested with two sets of father and son combinations. Danny Williams, Trevor Nicholson, Ken Piper and Tyson Nicholson, played against Anthony Whitbread, Peter Holey, Troy Williams and Troy Wilson. The teams lined up for pre-match photographs and the necessary roll-up was completed. Troy Wilson won the toss and went to an early lead of 11 shots to 4 on the sixth end, it was a nervous but cautious start to the Championship final. Lead bowlers Anthony Whitbread and Danny Williams played good lead bowls and consistently formed tight heads, in fact all bowlers played very well and were unafraid of using an array of shots showing such confidence seldom witnessed at Toukley RSL. As the game progressed and the ends went by, the team skippered by Troy
Wilson maintained a handy lead and at the completion of the fourteenth end were two shots in front 17 -15 and in the following two ends they picked up a further four shots. Not to be out done the Tyson Nicholson team bowled with confidence and skill picking up five shots on the next two ends bringing the score to be only one shot down 21-20. This was an enthralling match and certainly had the clubhouse crowd absorbed with the standard of play, and this late rally created further excitement and interest, but it was unfortunately not enough to secure a championship win. During the final three ends the team skippered by Troy Wilson scored a further four shots securing a well earned victory for the Toukley RSL Men’s Fours Championship for 2011. Congratulations go to Anthony Whitbread, Peter Holey, Troy Williams and skipper Troy Wilson, commiserations go to Danny Williams, Trevor Nicholson, Ken Piper and skipper Tyson Nicholson. This Championship was played with the true spirit of sportsmanship and goodwill, well done bowlers. We look forward to seeing bowlers and visitors alike once again at the club where we all belong Toukley RSL Men’s Bowling Club.
We congratulate her on this achievement and thank her for her involvement with our sport over the years. Patricia started her bowling career in 1980 when she joined Merrylands WBC. At first, as she was still working and was a weekend bowler but in 1984 she retired and bowls became a big part of her life. 1989 saw a move to the Central Coast where she joined Halekulani WBC and is still a member today. Over the years Patricia has won many Club and District championships. In 2003 she won the District Singles for the fourth time, a record [which has yet to be broken] for the Central Coast District. She was selected to represent our District in Interdistrict and Group games on numerous occasions and in 2001 she was part of Halekulani’s winning Grade One Pennant side. In 1993 Patricia became secretary of Halekulani WBC and this was the start of her ‘administrative’ career in bowls. She spent 4 years as secretary, then decided to try Match work for 2 years then back to secretary again for a further 2 years until June 2001. Concurrently Patricia joined the Central Coast District on the Match Committee in 1998 and

Avoca “No Ship” protest by Michelle Meares
bout 30 Avoca Beach residents travelled to Sydney on Wednesday, March 23 to protest the Labor State Government's planned sinking of the ex-HMAS Adelaide off Avoca Beach on April 13.
On Tuesday, March 22, the NSW Ombudsman issued serious questions to Warwick Watkins/Craig Abbs of the NSW Lands and Property Management Authority regarding scuttling preparations. This Ombudsman’s investigation is critical. Will Tony Kelly allow the NSW Ombudsman the time to do the job? This means, is Mr Kelly willing to postpone the scuttling date so that proper procedures can take place and if so, will Mr Kelly announce this decision before the election? Avoca Beach must not be risked. Due processes have not occurred. No Environmental Impact Statement was done. 23,000 sq metres of lead paint is on this ship, its paint has not been tested for PCBs, proper wave and sand erosion studies have not been done. The 4000-tonne ship has 2,100 tonnes of steel and aluminium which could be recycled at Garden Island. An identical sister ship, the ex-HMAS Canberra, was sunk off Geelong, Vic, in 2009 and is already breaking up. Marine environmentalists are outraged that our Government can try to dump a rusting and toxic warship 1,600 m off a pristine beach. Our Government is meant to protect us, our homes and our health - not damage them. Moreover, our
Government needs to allow the proper legal channels which keep wrong decisions in check, ie the Ombudsman's investigation. Avoca Beach must not be sold out like our electricity was. Anger about Government incompetence has driven two residents to stand at the upcoming election. Independent Michelle Meares is contesting the seat of Terrigal and Independent Ben Smith is standing for the Legislative Council. Michelle and Ben began the protest on the water at Greenwich Point, before crossing the Harbour to the Opera House, where they met with the bulk of the group bearing placards, prams and pamphlets. The march then continued down Macquarie St, past Parliament House and on to Martin Place. Sydneysiders showed
great support by asking for leaflets and expressing disbelief that a treasured holiday haven an hour north of Sydney was under threat. "They wouldn't dump a ship off Bondi," a No Ship spokesperson said.

14. Organisers said they were thrilled with the response from schools with eight schools represented by 72 students taking part in the event.
With favourable weather and a band of hard-working “bowlo buddies” to assist the students, things got underway about 9.15am. The format was three games of two bowl triples over 11 ends decided by wins plus ends. By game two the teams were self-reliant with touchers being marked, shots being measured and score-boards telling the story. Game three saw title contenders quickly learning to appreciate the importance of “bowls in the head”, “bowls behind” and “covering bowls”. “All teachers, parents and supporters could not have been more impressed with the attitude and behaviour of
the students,” said Gosford High school careers advisor Mr Garry MacFadyen. “They represented their respective schools with pride and a keen spirit to do well and learn as much as they could about the game. “The presence of the Central Coast Academy of Sport and Avoca selectors who assisted with talent identification, gave students even more incentive to play well,” he said. At the presentation, 12 students were recognised as bowlers with potential and they now have the offer of trialling for Academy selection. The final results were quickly tallied and Kincumber High School were announced the

With prize money of $1000for the winner and $500 for the runner-up the pre-season round robin competition sees both teams remaining unbeaten on the run up to the finals. Played out in hot and humid conditions the semi
finals took place on Sunday, March 13, and saw Kariong defeated by Gosford going down 9-0. Mark Yule, coaching the Gosford squad again for 2011, said that the team’s preparation for the preseason competition began in January and although they had success last season are looking forward rather than back. After winning all three of their preliminary games the Kariong side lacked strength for the crucial semi-final allowing Gosford to take control early and dominate for ninety minutes.
Kariong will be looking to improve on a disappointing finish to the 2010 season and have recruited new players into their squad including long standing Avoca striker, Donna Jones. The Doyalson girls claimed honours over a younger Umina side winning 4-1 securing their berth in the finals clash against Gosford. In the men’s final the $3000 winner’s prize money will be contested between East Gosford and Berkley Vale, kicking off at 4pm. The women kick off at 2pm.

elebrating 78 years in Gosford poses the question of whether or not Manning Sport is the longest serving business in Mann St, Gosford.
C
Initially a barber and tobacconist back in the late 1920s the business was purchased by James Manning in 1930 after a fire destroyed the premises in 1929. A name change in 1954 to Manning Sports included with it sporting goods, toys, together with sporting rifles where most stock was delivered by rail. Kevin Manning, the son of James, joined the family business at age fifteen,
further developing the sporting side of the business and continued for the next 57 years of his life, finally retiring at age 72. In that time he was honoured with an Australia Day award in 2000 for his contribution to the business community. Originally Manning Sport was a member of the Sportscene franchise group for sixteen years before deciding to return operations to an independent retailer. Suzanne Tyrrell (nee Manning) started work at the very young age of 12 years and worked on and off before staying full time with the business at 32 years and taking over management in 1997. Suzanne’s family has
also worked in the business with her husband Geoff Tyrrell working between 1992 and 2010. Suzanne said she and her staff are proud to be working and striving for excellence in serving the sporting community. “We are always trying to improve and like to give informative and personal service to our many loyal customers. “We are celebrating 78 years in business in Gosford in the same location at 172 Mann St, Gosford.” Mannings Sports is a modern sports business specialising in sporting guns, archery, camping, football gear, lawn bowls, fishing, water sports, darts and fitness

The regatta, hosted jointly by the Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club and the Ocean Beach
Surf Living Club attracted teams from Cronulla, Port Stephens, Ulladulla and Port Macquarie. The Ocean Beach director of education and training Mr Richard Grimmond said: “The support that Ocean Beach SLSC provides to the annual event allows organisers to gain authorisation for the event. “We are a community club and are pleased to be
able to help out another local organisation.” Races were held over distances varying from 4km for the juniors and novices to 16km for the women’s and men’s events. Races commenced in front of the Mantra Resort to the sounds of Hawaii Five-O music and boats headed out around Box Head and Lion Island before returning to the Mantra. The regatta provided
competition for club paddlers from all over NSW and the opportunity for the general public to view the canoes up close. Since the first Australian regatta held in 1981, Outrigging has become a popular sport among both men and women with divisions ranging from Juniors (10 to 19) through to Golden masters (over 55s).
After a disappointing finish to the 2010 season with a Semi Final loss to Erina, the Roosters First Grade will be keen to get the season off to a winning start against the Bunnies. Once again the Roosters will be coached by Les Lowe and will field a team with experienced players such as Adam Tippett, Aaron Hardman, Geoff Wilkin and Tim Bovis. Under 19s players James Murphy (Five-Eighth) and Zane Rickert (Wing) will
make their First Grade debuts for the Roosters, and join another Roosters Junior Alex Baxter as the rising stars of the Woy Woy squad. New signing, 19-yearold Boydie-Lee Symes has impressed playing in the front row during the trials and has secured his place in the pack alongside the experienced Wilkin. The Roosters lower grades are also chock full of talent, with Bob Gordon (Reserve Grade) Aaron McLean (Open Age) and Frank “Junior” Johnson heading the Coaching staff for each side. The Roosters first home game for 2011 against the Bunnies is on Sunday, March 27, with a full days entertainment for Peninsula Rugby League fans. Woy Woy oval used ‘out of season’ he Central Coast Division of Country Rugby League will be allowed use Woy Woy oval out of season on a one-off basis on Sunday, March 27. Gosford Council decided to allow the use after a Mayoral Minute at its meeting on Monday, March 1. Council also decided to review the Council Policy that determines season usage of facilities to consider the use of
facilities allocated for single season usage and other grounds at the discretion of the sporting body to which they have been allocated at times outside the currently prescribed periods. The Central Coast Division of Country Rugby League requested the use of a number of fields to enable an additional round within the proposed 2011 competition draw. Council Policy R1.02 currently states that “the winter season commences on the first full weekend in April and concludes on
the third full weekend in September, including all finals games”. Gosford Council resolved to approve the use of Woy Woy Oval on the one-off basis following the league’s advice that it was unable to locate an alternative venue. The League requested the use of Woy Woy Oval as it does not have a summer allocation and representatives of the League believed that there would be minimal impact on other users.
