Enthusiastic fans see Matildas win
by Val Bridge
he Matildas continue their winning streak with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the final home match before next month’s World Cup in Germany.
T
Played last Sunday at the Central Coast Bluetongue Stadium, the win followed a confident 3-0 win over the Football Ferns three days earlier - also at Bluetongue Stadium. The Matildas’ World Cup planning has already been hit by injury to Kate Gill, with the prolific
striker ruled out with a knee injury. The Matildas were without numerous other players against New Zealand, with Heather Garriock, Sarah Walsh, Thea Slatyer, Caitlin Foord and Teigan Allen all recovering from injury. Australia started well with Catherine Cannuli grabbing her debut international goal in her second outing just ten minutes in from the start with the Sydney FC forward heading home a Sam Kerr cross from close range. The goal only served to inspire the visitors, who were centimetres from equalising when a corner
caused havoc in the penalty area, with Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri grabbing a half-hit effort on the goal line. The Kiwis were rewarded on 26 minutes with an equaliser their first goal against Australia in five meetings - with striker Hannah Wilkinson converting from close range. Australia started to find some cohesion late in the opening half of a fiery trans Tasman contest in front of 2,866 spectators, when Collette McCallum hit the crossbar from a corner. McCallum then provided
a moment of inspiration nine minutes after the interval to break the deadlock curling the ball into the back of the Ferns net from one of her trademark free kicks. Prior to the game brought the news that Lisa De Vanna had been evicted from the Matildas camp in Gosford for disciplinary reasons on the morning of their World Cup farewell game against the Kiwis, thought immediately turned to whether Australia’s most potent weapon would be among coach Tom Sermanni’s 21 player squad in Germany next month.
With Kate Gill missing out on the World Cup due to a knee injury and Sarah Walsh still in rehab after a long term injury, suddenly, it seemed, the entire Matildas first choice attack for much of the past five years mightn’t be involved at the world’s showpiece. While Sermanni suggested after Sundays’ match at a sundrenched Bluetongue Stadium that De Vanna might still be selected if the rest of the squad accepted her back, there’s no doubt a wind of change is sweeping through the Matildas attacking line-up.

Johnston to take on new role with Gosford City Basketball by Luke Tucker
att Johnston joined the Central Coast Academy of Sport team of staff just over nine months ago with the aim of gaining some experience and establishing himself within the sport and recreation industry.
M
Johnston was originally employed by the academy as development officer before progressing into the programs coordinator role and attracting the attention of a number of other local sporting organisations, including Gosford City Basketball at Terrigal. The organisation has offered him a challenging new role as their full-time basketball manager; a position recently left vacant by Glenn Clark, who is taking on a new career path with the NSW police force.
“We are supportive of Matt’s decision to take on the new role with Gosford City Basketball and we wish him all the best”, said Central Coast Academy of Sport executive officer Luke Tucker. “The academy is all about developing our local sports administrators as well as our athletes, coaches and officials.” “We feel we have played an important role in Matt’s development in sports administration and we’ll always be here to offer any ongoing support that may be required in his new role.” “Matt still has a lot to learn, but this is a great opportunity for him to gain full-time employment in a local setting and within the sport of basketball where his true passion lies”, added Tucker. Away from the office, Johnston is a basketballer who played all his junior
representative games with the Gosford City Rebels and is now representing the Central Coast Crusaders in the club’s top senior men’s team. Part of his new role will be to oversee the ongoing success of both the Gosford City Rebels junior and Central Coast Crusaders senior representative basketball programs. “It’s an exciting move for me, one that I’ve had to think long and hard about”, said Johnston. “The support of the Central Coast Academy of Sport has been valuable and I thank the Board and staff for the great opportunities they’ve provided me.” “I’m looking forward to continuing my involvement as a coach with the academy basketball program and my dealings with the staff through the close association with Gosford City Basketball”, Johnston added.

Fahey to focus on netball state league program
by Luke Tucker
auren Fahey has stepped down from her position as head coach of the Central Coast Academy of Sport netball program in order to focus on leading the new Central Coast state league program.
L
The league program is a combined initiative between the region’s three netball associations, including Gosford, Woy Woy and Wyong. The combined state league program now forms part of the pathway for Central Coast Academy of Sport netball scholarship. Athletes continue their development and active involvement in the sport of netball here on the Central Coast as opposed to having to move or travel elsewhere to gain quality competition. Fahey originally took on the state league head coach role in addition to her commitments with the Central Coast Academy of Sport. After ongoing discussions with the academy, Fahey’s decision to focus her full attention on the state league
program opened the door for assistant coaches Amber Cross and Megan Sharpe to gain further experience of the academy netball program, with promotions to co-coach roles. Inaugural Central Coast Academy of Sport netball head coach Marion Van Munster has continued her involvement in a mentor coaching role and will again become more actively involved, offering handson support and guidance to Amber and Megan as they move into their new leadership coaching positions. Trainee coach Amy Phillips has also been promoted to an assistant coach role to continue to offer support to Amber and Megan. This will also create an additional opportunity for a new trainee coach to come through the academy’s successful coach development system. “A lot of people look at the academy and think we’re just all about developing athletes, but the truth is that we’re just as focused on our coach, official and administrator development as we are with our athletes,” said academy
executive officer Luke Tucker. “Without quality coaches, our athletes don’t receive the professional training and support that is required to assist them in further progressing to the next level in their sport. “This is why we insisted on keeping Marion (Van Munster) involved as a mentor coach when she made the decision to retire from the head coach role. “Marion’s experience and knowledge of the game has provided extremely valuable support to the other coaches involved in our program and has assisted former head coaches Dianne Brown and Lauren Fahey in their progression to higher appointments.” “We’re obviously disappointed that we’ll be losing Lauren (Fahey) as our head coach, but at the same time, we can be proud that we’ve played a part in her development and we are excited to continue the coaching development opportunities for Amber, Megan and Amy with the support of Marion,” Tucker added.

2011 ClubsNSW Academy Games wrap-up he 2011 C l u b s N S W Academy Games provided another great opportunity for over 100 local athletes, coaches and officials to represent the Central Coast region as the Central Coast Academy of Sport touring squad.
T
The Central Coast was represented in basketball, golf, netball and rugby at the 2011 ClubsNSW Academy Games, which were held in Armidale for the final year of the Northern Inland Academy of Sport’s three year hosting rights of the event. It was announced at the official opening ceremony that the Illawarra Academy of Sport had won the rights to host the ClubsNSW Academy Games in Wollongong for the next three years. “We performed well overall and it was a great opportunity for our athletes, coaches and officials who represented the Central Coast Academy of Sport and our region above and beyond expectations both on and off the sporting field,” said academy operations manager Hannah Everett. The Academy took a rather young and unfamiliar netball team to this year’s ClubsNSW Academy Games. Whilst it took the girls a while to get into the swing of things, “it was a great development opportunity that will go a long way towards the continued improvement of each and every athlete involved in the tour”, says spokesman Luke Tucker. games including a big 40-8 win over Far West Academy of Sport, a 26-7 win over host academy Northern Inland and two hard fought victories over Illawarra, 2621, and South West Sydney, 20-17. Coaches Amber Cross and Megan Sharpe were impressed with the progression of their athletes over the three-days of play and Ashleigh Robertson was awarded the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s most valuable player award. The Central Coast was represented in both boys and girls basketball at the Games, which this year were based on a roundrobin format with each academy playing each other twice as opposed to last year where there were semifinals and finals played at the end of the three days of competition. The round-robin matches were based around a focus on participation and development as opposed to competition where each academy received the same amount of games, and game-time was spread across all participating athletes.
The Central Coast has always performed well in basketball at the ClubsNSW Academy Games and this year was no exception. The girls finished with four wins, one loss and one draw, whilst the boys lost just two of their six games across the three days. Central Coast Academy of Sport athletes Oliver Robilliard and Madison Doorn were named most valuable players across all four academies, participating in the basketball event. MVP awards were determined from a total of coach votes after each game. Athletes and coaches from all NSW regional academies of sport were treated to a special guest appearance and hands-on presentation and coaching clinic by current Australian Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans. The Australian Rugby Union were heavily involved in the coordination and successful running of rugby at this year’s ClubsNSW Academy Games, which saw Central Coast take out the under 16s division of the sevens tournament.

Jack Booker was named as the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s most valuable rugby player for the 2011 ClubsNSW Academy Games. Patrick Joseph was the overall gross winner of the golf event and was also awarded the Central Coast’s most valuable player award. Central Coast golf squad and Armidale tour captain Adam Barnes was equal first with Joseph at the end of the first day’s play, but Pat pulled away from his teammate in the final day to finish as the overall gross winner with 152.
McKay is a third-year scholarship athlete within the academy’s future stars program and was also recently announced as a Central Coast Academy of Sport Greater Ambassadors. At just 12 years of age, Riley has already represented both NSW and Australia on a number of occasions and is currently ranked within the top five female barefoot water-skiers in the world. Riley is looking forward to gaining further support and assistance through her new association with the Donnica Clarke Foundation. “The academy has been so good for me in developing myself both in and out of the water, so I’m looking forward to now also being involved with the Donnica Clarke Foundation,” said McKay. The Donnica Clarke Foundation offers the Central Coast Academy of Sport
one exclusive scholarship position each year where the academy puts forward a recommendation of its most suitable athlete to the foundation board. “This is a unique opportunity for a local athlete to represent two very like-minded community organisations,” said academy executive officer Luke Tucker. “We had no hesitation in recommending Riley as our Donnica Clarke Foundation scholarship athlete for 2011, as she has many similar characteristics to Donnica who was an exceptional sporting talent from a young age and was always well above her years both in competition and when dealing with the attention that her results attracted,” added Tucker. Riley was inducted into the Donnica Clarke Foundation at an athlete presentation evening held at Mingara Recreation Club on Wednesday 4 May. Previous Central Coast Academy of Sport Donnica Clarke Foundation scholarship athletes are Chris Dodd and Kevin Moore, who are both from the academy’s athletics program.
Academy surfers set for Surfarama ight Central Coast Academy of Sport surfing scholarship athletes will compete in this weekend’s Surfarama event to be held at either Avoca or Copacabana depending on conditions.
E
Jake Constantinidis (Norah Head) and Brendan Hey (Avoca) will contest the under-15s division, whilst Jordan Bulmer (North Shelly), Jack Robinson (Norah Head), Jake Wright (Forresters), Jackson Howell
(Macmasters) and Vincent Peck (Forresters) have been entered into the under-18 and under age group. Bulmer will also step up and take on the senior guys in the open division of the event. Dean Page (Tea Tree) is the only current male Central Coast Academy of Sport surfing scholarship athlete not competing at Surfarama, as he is currently on a surfing trip in Bali. Central Coast Academy of Sport surfers will be representing both the academy and their local board rider club.
by Luke Tucker
Central Coast Academy of Sport surfing coach, Nick Leslie, will oversee the academy surfing athletes’ involvement over the weekend and is looking forward to the return of Surfarama, an event that has a lot of history on the Central Coast. “Surfarama was a big event back in the day, so to see it return to the Coast is exciting,” said Leslie. “It’s great to have our academy guys involved and I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform over the weekend,” Leslie added.

I’m often asked who the best player is that I’ve seen in the period at The Bulldogs, and without hesitation I’d say Terry Lamb. He was incredibly tough; had speed over a short distance, and was a prolific try scorer with unparalleled support play. He was also a superb leader, inspiring the Bulldogs to an unlikely victory over short-priced favourites Manly in the 1995 Grand Final. You may remember in that series they came from fifth, and defeated the star studded Broncos and Raiders en route to The Big One. Baa played every game on a Kangaroo tour, and retired after 349 first grade games; a feat matched only by Steve Menzies, and soon to be surpassed by an immortal in waiting Darren Lockyer. There have been several standout juniors; Braith
Anasta, Johnathan Thurston and more recently Jamal Idris each had something special before they progressed to first grade. The best I’ve seen by the length of the straight is undoubtedly Sonny Bill Williams. He was simply phenomenal; with strength and speed, a brilliant fend and the ability to offload before or at the line. He was also an intimidating defender. I thought he was ready for first grade 12 months prior to his stunning debut against Parramatta in 2004, at just 18-years of age. He also made his international debut that year, and won a Premiership in his rookie season, starting on the bench in the Bulldogs 16-13 win over the Roosters. My Locker Room co-host
Michael Buettner played over 250 first grade games with Parramatta, North Sydney and the Northern Eagles; he had a second stint with The Eels, before a final season at the Wests Tigers. Buetts fondly recalls a young prop forward on debut for North Sydney in 1999 who went toe to toe with Dallas Hood. The 18 year-old was Munmorah Maulers junior Mark O’Meley. The hilarious dencorub rubbed onto the bald head pre-match stories about Ogre are also 100 percent correct. Another junior player to impress Buettner was Robbie Farah, but he says a Keebra Park High School student who joined the Tigers during the off-season of 2002-2003 is the best youngster he’s witnessed. He was scintillating, with a step that made established first grade defenders look like park footballers. Benji Marshall made his debut against the Knights in 2003 as an 18-year-old; and despite numerous setbacks due to shoulder injuries, has won a Premiership ring, a World Cup, and Four Nations Title. So who have been the best Central Coast juniors? My research has been extensive, and I’ll list some of the finest to lace on a boot locally in the next edition. We’d love your opinion on some of the best players you’ve seen; email us at mail@ccgrandstand.org

Judy King[left] winner and Tracy Ward Runner up he 2011 State Singles at District Level were played from 9 to 13 May.

Some exciting bowls were played throughout the week, starting on Monday at Avoca Beach and Bateau Bay. Tuesday play was at The Entrance. The quarter finals were played in the afternoon with Tracy Ward (of Ettalong Memorial) defeating Norma Barry (The Entrance), Deidre Windshuttel (Avoca Beach) defeating Pat Neal (Umina Beach), Judy King (Everglades) defeating Lauren Williams (Ettalong Memorial) and Dianne
McInnes (Halekulani) defeating Arleen Jackson [Bateau Bay]. The Semi-finals were held at Davistown RSL on Thursday morning. The players had to battle the wind but conditions were better than earlier in the week. Again, we saw some tremendous bowls. Judy King defeated Dianne McInnes and Tracy Ward defeated Deidre Windshuttel. The final was played at Terrigal on Friday 13th between Judy and Tracy. ‘Black Friday’ certainly didn’t affect the play. The weather was kind, with sunshine and quite
warm conditions. Ms Lesley Swales marked this match and she said the quality of the bowls was great. Some ends each bowl that came down changed who was holding shot. “Congratulations to both players, who played the game with great sportsmanship and friendship,” said Ms Swales. The eventual winner was Judy King from Everglades. This is the second time Judy has won this event, having won previously in 2009. Judy will now go on to the D Group playoffs to be held at Maitland City bowling club on 25 July.

Northumberland girls are Medibank state team champions
by Maurice Murphy
The Lesley Bowrey Trophy presented to the winners Rebecca Stewart, Zoe Barton, Gabby Elphick & Team Manager Lauren Roach by Tennis NSW Vice President Greg Doyle uring the first weekend of May, Gosford Tennis Centre hosted the 2011 Medibank 14 and under State Team Championships.
D
Talented tennis juniors were invited to represent their region, as six country and six metro teams competed. The girls who attended competed for the Lesley Bowrey Cup, with the winning boys team set to take home the Ken Rosewell
Cup. The first day of play was interrupted by the rain, however, the teams battled on around the conditions. The second and final day saw the rain held off with all matches being completed. The aspiring youngsters had a brush with fame during the weekend, as Ken Rosewall drove up to Gosford to check out all of the action. The Northumberland Girls team went on to take out the Lesley Bowrey Cup. There was also a Northumberland connection to the Ken
Rosewall Cup winners, The Metro Deuces comprising of Alexander Bourgeois, Jack Whittaker and Anuraj Talati, as they were managed by current pro tour player and Central Coast resident Adam Feeney. The Northumberland Boys team, including Jermery Slee, Brendan Potter, Daniel Kouznetzov and Manager Matt Gordon, gained some valuable experience but were unfortunate not to emerge from their group, instead finishing third.
Local Hockey Champ inspires cancer ride challenge ending support home, ex- Central Coast local, Grant Symes is inspired by his ‘favourite Aunty’ Elaine Johnston to take a two day challenge in the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer, August 20-21st.
S
Spending her whole life devoted to supporting Hockey throughout the Central Coast region, Elaine has recently been diagnosed with liver cancer and nephew Grant Symes won’t stand for it. Grant, General Manager for national fencing company Protector Aluminium, will ride alongside his team through Queensland’s
countryside to raise $27,500 for a worldwide leader in the fight against cancer, Queensland’s Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). The money raised will go directly to QIMR and will be put toward important clinical trials, research, teaching and care for people living with cancer. Elaine has made a significant impact on the Central Coast through her constant support, fundraising, coaching and involvement in the Hockey community. Her involvement in the sport has seen Elaine recognised with an Order of Australia award in 1995. She was also lucky enough to be a volunteer in the Sydney Olympics.
Like many who have known someone to battle through cancer, the impact of the disease is indescribable. Grants drive for the challenge is the need to show support for people living with cancer and the valuable cause behind the event. Supporters of the ride can choose to donate to a specific team or individuals to help them reach their fundraising goals and to encourage them to do their best on the day. Mariners create links with Hummel
he Central Coast Mariners and Hummel Australia today confirm that the Denmark-based sports clothing manufacturer will provide the club’s apparel, including playing strips, for the next two seasons.
T
The home and alternative kits will be formally unveiled closer to the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 campaign and will comprise at least one brand new South American inspired design. The club’s traditional colours of yellow and navy will, of course, be retained as the prominent features of the clothing, while incorporating Hummel’s signature ‘chevrons’. “Naturally, we’re very excited about the prospect of linking up with Hummel Australia over the next two years,” said club Chairman Mr Peter Turnbull. “Since the Hyundai A-League’s inception, the Mariners have aspired to make the most of all licensing and apparel opportunities as a part of our brand strategy. “Our approach has always had both on and offfield aims and certainly this new deal allows us to expand upon that philosophy. “We were the first Hyundai A-League club to
introduce vertical stripes into a playing kit in 2009, and together with Hummel Australia, the club will once again be providing quality, unique licensed products for our supporters to enjoy,” he explained. Hummel has its roots firmly planted in rich football culture, having previously supplied apparel for European heavyweights such as Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur as well as the Danish national team. The company was established in Germany in 1923 and currently kits out over 60 professional football clubs across Europe, Asia and Africa including ADO Den Haag, RC Strasbourg, AFC Champions League 2006 winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC and Scottish Premier League side St. Mirren. Domestically, the manufacturer has a long lasting affiliation with Football NSW as well as all of the Westfield W-League sides. “There is no doubt that Hummel is a company with a long and distinguished history in the game of football,” Mr Turnbull said. “That kind of respectable, quality brand is the kind of organisation that our club wishes to be associated with and this agreement therefore fits comfortably within our football club’s core values.”
As part of the deal, the Mariners will become Hummel Australia’s new distributor throughout the Central Coast, providing local clubs and organisations with apparel, creating yet another link between the club and the community. Hummel Australia National Brand Manager Nathan Russell said the new deal was a crucial step in the continued expansion of the company’s operations into the Australia & New Zealand region. “At the end of the day it’s great to be involved with a club that has similar values to our own in terms of creating close ties with the community and having a commitment to looking after those involved at the grassroots level of the game.” “It’s also a brand lift for Hummel Australia in terms of exposure to a broader audience. Obviously with our close association with Football NSW the organisation is quite well known in the Sydney area, but this deal is a great development for us as our national exposure increases,” he said. The Mariners team and coaching staff will be decked out in new Hummel training gear when they return to the pitch for the pre-season next Monday, 16 May.
Battle of the Sporting Codes entral Coast sporting teams will be locked in competition over 28 – 29 May, as they partake in the Battle of the Sporting Codes to raise money for The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal doorknock weekend.
C
The Central Coast Mariners, the Central Coast Bears, Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club and the Erina Eagles are just a few of the teams that will be trying to raise the largest amount of money for the Central Coast Red Shield Appeal. “The competition is a fun, light-hearted opportunity for sporting organisations around the Central Coast to show their support for The Salvation Army,” said Red
Shield Appeal committee member Mr Derek Taylor. On May 28 and 29, there will be two roadside collection points where various sporting teams will be stationed, one near the Scout Hall on Terrigal Drive, and the other positioned westbound on Avoca Drive, Kincumber. Central Coast residents can show support for their favourite sporting code by contributing to their preferred team’s donation bucket. “If you want your team to gain the honour of becoming a part of the Coast’s favourite sporting code, give generously when you see them on the roadside over the doorknock weekend,” said Mr Taylor. Among those stepping out to represent their local team will be Mariners stars Matt Simon, Ollie Bozanic,
John Hutchinson, along with a host of their grand final team mates, as well as Greg Florimo and David Fairleigh from the Central Coast Bears. “These teams are all very busy, and it is fantastic that they are giving up their valuable time to participate in this great cause. “We encourage other sporting organisations to join in on the competition, and you can register your team’s interest in participating in the collections by contacting The Salvation Army Central Coast on 4325 5614,” he added. The Battle of the Sporting Codes will be held over the annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock weekend from May 28 and 29. Donations to the Salvation Army can be made via www.salvos.org.au

Men’s and Womens’ Pemier league Football
he womens’ premier league sees Doyalson leading the table by one point over Gosford at round six of the competition.
The teams have an encounter with each other as the final game of the season, scheduled from a round three washout and due to be played on the 31st July which could turn out to be the decider of final league positions. Last Sunday’s results for the girls saw The Entrance go down to Doyalson 5 nil and Gosford defeating Avoca 4 nil. A tight clash between Wyoming and Tuggerah saw Wyoming edge out Tuggerah 4-3 in a seesawing game. Avoca are yet to gain points from their promotion to the premier league after a strong showing in 2010 first grade competition. Meanwhile in the men’s CountryNet Premier League, Berkeley Vale has increased its lead at the top of the competition to five points following a 3-1 win in their top of the table clash with The Entrance at Pat Morley Oval. Brenton Olzomer gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime with second-half goals to David Graham and Scott Rowland extending the margin before a late consolation goal to Terrie Dries. The win was Berkeley Vale’s second in five days having downed Kincumber 3-2 in their midweek deferred match. Budgewoi showed no ill-effects from their second match in four days by defeating East Gosford 4-1 in the upset of the round at Frank Millington Field. The northerners have struggled for consistency so far this season but showed that they could still be a force, despite this being their first win. Two of Budgewoi’s goals
by Val Bridge
came from penalties, with Matthew Crompton converting on each occasion, Ben Runge and Craig Simpson also on the score sheet for the winners. Jason McMinimee was East Gosford’s goal scorer. Wyoming have bounced back from their last-gasp loss to East Gosford in the previous round, thrashing Kincumber 6-1 at Alan Davidson Park. The Tigers struggled early against the enthusiastic young Roos team, who took the lead after just five minutes. However, Marc Falzon’s
30-minute equaliser was the trigger for a Wyoming revival and by half-time they had the match in hand with a 3-1 lead. Other scorers were Jack North (2), Paul Jones, Daniel Surridge and Matthew Gravas. A 70th–minute penalty goal to Tim Knight was enough to earn Killarney District a hard fought 1-0 win over Wyong at EDSACC North. The win moves Killarney to within a point of the top four while Wyong, who began the season so impressively, have now dropped to ninth place
with just one draw from their last five matches. After drawing their first two matches, Umina have picked up their third straight win, defeating Kanwal 3-0 at Umina Oval with Marc Tarring (2) and Chris Powell the goal scorers. The win, together with losses by The Entrance and East Gosford, sees the Peninsula team jump into second place, five points behind Berkeley Vale but with a game in hand.

P10 - GRANDSTAND - May 19, 2011
Central Coast Rugby Union
by Larry Thomson
Preview May 21 he round of rugby this Saturday sees teams in the top half of the competition playing teams who are out of the Top Four but who are very keen to get back into the semifinal race.
T
On paper, there appears to be a favourite in each game but there have been plenty of upsets this year and nothing would surprise. Probably the most interesting of all the four games is the clash at Heazlett Park between Warnervale and Avoca Beach. Both teams are winners from last week and there is much to excite the spectator about this game. Avoca Beach had a win last week after a couple of losses while Warnervale have come from nowhere
this year. They have had two great wins on the trot and their form has been excellent. They were convincing winners against Woy Woy at home last week so it will be interesting to see if they can keep that form going. In previous years, Avoca Beach would take the visit from Warnervale as a certain win but not this Saturday. Warnervale are a young team with a very quick and enthusiastic backline. The interest this Saturday is to see how Warnervale go away from home as their last two wins were at home, and how they perform against the reigning Central Coast Premiers. This will be a tight game with the experience of Avoca Beach up against the youth of Warnervale. Of course, Avoca Beach have young players and
Warnervale have those experienced players but generally, Warnervale will rely on their younger brigade. Avoca Beach will go into the clash as favourites because of their big time experience plus the home ground advantage, but several teams in recent weeks have underestimated the ability of this Warnervale team. ---------------------------Almost as equally interesting as the above game is the match at Slade Park between Northlakes and Ourimbah. Ourimbah are one of the undefeated teams in the competition at this stage and would be most keen to keep that form going. Northlakes were defeated last week, but gave a most creditable performance against Avoca Beach. They have lost a few
games now so they know they must win this one to keep in touch with the Top Four. Northlakes always play well at home. Ourimbah will go into the game as clear favourites but with Northlakes at home and also desperate for a win, an upset would not surprise. Ourimbah will rely on their forward strength and this is where much of their game will be based. Northlakes will have to match Ourimbah in their forward struggles but they will be keen to spin the ball wide because they know they do have the speedy backs to put the visitors under pressure. ---------------------------Gosford travel to Woy Woy Oval to take on Woy Woy. Woy Woy have had some close losses in recent weeks and will be most keen to get
themselves on to the winners list. They will be much stronger at home and they will put the Gosford team under pressure all the way. Gosford remain undefeated this season and are proving one of the bench marks of the 2011 season. Their backline has been performing very well and they have looked dangerous every time they have touched the ball. Woy Woy will try to keep the battle in the forwards where they do have the players who can keep the game tight for the entire 80 minutes. These two teams always have a battle royal and both teams are always very keen to defeat the other. Gosford will want to maintain their unbeaten record while Woy Woy need a win to maintain their chances
of keeping in contact with the competition leaders. ---------------------------Kariong are hosts to The Entrance this Saturday at Kariong Oval and this being their first home game of the season they will be keen to put on a good performance. Due to washouts and transfers Kariong have not been at home, so The Entrance meet a team ready for a good effort. The Entrance performed most creditably last Saturday against the undefeated Ourimbah and will have high hopes of doing well this weekend. Kariong will be obvious favourites in this game but the Entrance have a good forward pack and they will keep their side in the game for quite awhile against Kariong.
Round 5: First Grade Results, May 7 ariong scored a tight win over Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park by 29 points to 24.
K
In a game that saw Kariong dominate the first half and then saw an Avoca Beach resurgence in the second half, Kariong was able to hang for a very close victory. Avoca Beach have now lost two games in succession at home and it is a very long time since that has happened. Kariong got away to a great start and by half time had jumped to a 24 points to 5 win. Kariong ran northwards in that first period and were able to dominate all phases of the game. They controlled the set pieces as well as general play. Kariong had several excellent players in that period. None were better than flanker Peter Downie who was all over the field. He was very well supported by hooker Brad Seaman who had one of his best games for the club. Kariong were able to spread the ball wide and both wingers, Lucas Koschel and Tom Clay, were both able to score a try in the match.
Avoca Beach did come right back into the game in the second half. Avoca outscored Kariong by 19 points to 5 in the second half but it was all too late. They had allowed Kariong to get away to too good a start. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Peter Steele, hooker Matt Hipwell and flanker Rhys McLuckie. They gave it their all to catch up but just fell short on the scoreboard. This result, amongst others, certainly does open up the competition and the comp is proving to be the most open in years. Kariong - 29 - Sione Ofahengaue 2, Tom Clay, Lucas Koschel tries; Scott Hanley 3 conversions, 1 penalty goal defeated Avoca Beach - 24 - Matt Maloney 2, Josh Davies, David Horton tries; Matt Maloney 2 conversion ---------------------------Ourimbah scored late to gain a 27 to 25 win over Terrigal at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The scoreboard changed
from start to finish with both teams taking control at various time of the match. The result could have gone either way. The whole match was a very tight struggle. Terrigal led by 22 points to 17 at the half time break but it was Ourimbah who finished slightly the stronger to get home. Ourimbah had several good players but the best on the day were lock Tyler Jones, No.8 Jordan Deaves and flanker Brett Marchant, who scored a good try. Jones, on his return from NSW Country Colts representative duty, was outstanding. However, it was Terrigal who led at the break and who would have been quite confident of hanging on for victory. But it was not to be. Terrigal were outscored in the second half but had several very good players. Lock Phil Heard was strong all day, and he was well supported by prop Todd Atkins, winger Tim Woods and five-eight Damien Woods. Ourimbah continue their good run and have had their best start to a season in many years while Terrigal will take a lot from the match despite the loss.
Ourimbah - 27 - Brett Marchant, Hayden Cowley, Matt Ropoama, Dane McNamara tries; Anthony Ericksson 2 conversions, 1 pen.goal defeated Terrigal - 25 - Damien Woods, Tim Woods, Denis Raft tries; Damien Woods 2 conversions, 2 penalty goals ---------------------------In the one of the biggest upsets of the day Warnervale scored a momentous win over Northlakes at Woongarrah Field by 34 points to 25. This win was probably the best club win since they entered the First Grade competition and is a real boost for the club. There was huge excitement on the sidelines at Warnervale when the fulltime whistle went. Warnervale got away to a great start and led by15 points to nil very early in the game. They maintained this lead throughout the match, even though at times the scores got very close. Warnervale led 15 nil and then led 15 to 5 at the half time break. The scores evened up midway through the second
half when the Warnervale lead was reduced to 27-25. Warnervale had several star players although all their players made a contribution. Best players were flanker Chris Hitch, halfback Josh Holman, and inside centre Luke Dixon who was able to cross for two individual tries. Northlakes never gave up despite the poor start. Best for Northlakes were centre Paul Wilson and flanker Shane Nesbitt. Warnervale will take a huge amount from this game and the win will prove a huge impetus to their season. They will trouble all teams this year. Northlakes will be very disappointed with the result and will have to strike back next week to get back into the running for a semi-final spot. Warnervale - 34 - Luke Dixon 2, Ketoni Toytai, Chris Hitch, Josh Holman tries; Jarryd Lees 3 conversions, 1 penalty goal defeated Northlakes - 25 Patrick Quigg 2, Brenton Law, Paul Wilson tries; Logan Hemopo 1 conversion, 1 penalty goals ----------------------------
Gosford ran rampant over The Entrance at Joseph Banks Oval and ran out winners by 77 points to nil. It was totally all Gosford from start to finish. They ran in 11 tries and all were converted. Gosford totally dominated all phases of the game but every time their backline got the ball they made breaks. The backline was brilliant and all backs made an impact. However, the star was fullback Peter Miller who was lethal every time he touched the ball. He was able to run in for 4 tries. Others to perform for Gosford were halfback Damien Montgomery and prop Steve Lauti, while Clint Guyatt and Jack Denny never stopped trying for The Entrance. Gosford - 77 - Peter Miller 4, Steve Lauti, Andrew Moseley, Adam Carlisle, Adam Clift, Tim Hill, David Von Kotze, Jack Mann tries; Damien Montgomery 6 conversions Tim Hill 5 conversions defeated The Entrance - 0

Round 6: First Grade Results, May 14 he Match of the Day yesterday saw Gosford defeat Terrigal by 13 points to 3 at Gosford Showground.
T
In a game that was intensely fought throughout, and although not high scoring, it yet had plenty of movement. Gosford seemed to be able to control many of the set pieces yet it was Terrigal that got to every breakdown quickly and who forced the match into a struggle for the entire 80 minutes. The first 20 minutes was a very physical struggle where Gosford seemed to have the ascendancy, yet were never able to assert this supposed advantage on the paddock nor on the scoreboard. The scores remained nil all for much of the first half. Both sides had their chances to post points, but the general flow of play went from one end of the field to the other. Gosford had the territorial advantage in the opening ten or so minutes, then Terrigal gained the ascendancy. Terrigal opened the scoring in the 25th minute, when their five-eight Damien Woods kicked a penalty goal to take the lead by 3 points to nil. This remained the score until halftime. It was a very even struggle. Gosford at times appeared as though they were to take control, but it was the spirited performance
of the Terrigal players that was frustrating the Gosford team. Terrigal had several excellent performers on the day, but none were better than flanker David Crawford, who appeared to be all over the paddock and was in everything. He was well supported by five-eight Damien Woods, No.8 Ryan Metcalfe, and fullback Dennis Raft. Gosford started the second half strongly. They were able to cross for an unconverted try in the 10th minute of the half. Winger David von Kotze crossed in the corner to enable Gosford to take the lead by 5 points to 3. Gosford had the benefit of a huge percentage of ball and tried everything to post further points. However, wonderful Terrigal defence kept them out. Gosford kicked a penalty goal to increase the lead to 8 points to 3 midway through the second half. Gosford had several good players. Fullback Peter Miller was always dangerous from the back and gained many metres for the home side. He was ably assisted by flanker Hugo Pike, who had a strong game, as well as Tim Hill in the centres. Gosford practically sealed the game soon when a backline movement saw centre Josh McGlynn cross for the side’s second try. Adam Carlisle threw a long pass for McGlynn to run
onto the ball for the try. The score was 13 points to 3 and this remained the final score. Gosford remain undefeated on the competition ladder, but they knew they were in a hard struggle in this encounter. Terrigal gave it their all and, although well out of the four at present, will definitely be in the reckoning for the Top Four over the next few months. Gosford - 13 - David Von Kotze, Josh McGlynn tries; Damien Montgomery 1 penalty goal defeated Terrigal - 3 - Damien Woods 1 penalty goal ---------------------------Warnervale continued displaying their excellent form with a convincing win over Woy Woy at Woongarrah Field by 46 points to 24. It was a most convincing display and they fully deserved their great win. Warnervale took control right from the start and, even by halftime, practically had the match secured. They led by 29 points to nil at the break, and the match was very much in their keeping. Even though Woy Woy won the second half on the scoreboard, Warnervale had done enough early on to post the win. Best for Warnervale were hooker Ketoni Toutai, who was outstanding all day, and he was well supported by
flanker Chris Hitch. Hitch was all over the field and certainly made a huge impact on the match. This win suddenly puts Warnervale into semifinal reckoning and has certainly changed the face of the Central Coast rugby competition. Woy Woy hit back in the second half but to no avail. Best for Woy Woy were Angus Stewart who scored 2 tries and forward Paul Gooley.
So Northlakes were still in the encounter but Avoca Beach were able to pile on several tries in the final quarter of the match to run out winners. Best players for Avoca Beach were flanker Chad Martin, winger Tom Murphy, and Justin Staben who was able to post 10 points for his team. Northlakes were best served by Logan Hemopo, who scored a try, and hooker Michael Ferry.
Warnervale - 46 - Chris Hitch 2, Josh Rennie 2, Josh Holman, Jarryd Lees, Mua Sununu tries; Jarryd Lees 4 conversions, 1 penalty goal defeated Woy Woy - 24 - Shakti Gurung, Paul Gooley, David Best, Angus Stewart tries Andrew McNamara 2 conversions ---------------------------Avoca Beach returned to the winners list with a comfortable win over Northlakes at Slade Park by 40 points to 12. The win was probably not secured until the final 20 minutes of the match, but it was a deserved win. Avoca Beach led by 15 points to 7 at the half time break and at that stage, it was still anybody’s match. A further try was scored by Avoca Beach early in the second half to enable the visitors to get to a 20 points to 7 lead.
Avoca Beach - 40 - Chad Martin 2, Justin Staben, David Horton, Matt Hipwell, Adam Winter, Matt Anderson tries; Justin Staben 1 conversion, 1 penalty goal defeated Northlakes - 12 - Logan Hemopo, Brenton Law tries; Logan Hemopo 1 conversion ---------------------------Ourimbah scored a 31 points to 15 win over The Entrance at Ourimbah Rugby Park. It was a very pleasing performance by The Entrance side and they performed very well particularly in the forwards. Ourimbah led by 19 points to 8 at the halftime break and were able to maintain this effort throughout the second half to secure the win. The Entrance would be very pleased with the effort, especially after last week’s disappointing effort. Best for Ourimbah were
Matt Ropoama and Jordan Deaves, while The Entrance were best served by Lachlan Gulliver and Clint Guyatt. Ourimbah - 31 - Isaac Blowers, Matt Ropoama, Jade McLachlan, Nigel Kennedy, Jordan Deaves tries; Anthony Ericksson 3 conversions defeated The Entrance - 15 Lachlan Gulliver, Adam Vaughan tries; Adam Williams 1 conversion, 1 penalty goal ----------------------------

Gillard/Wilkie pact a threat to Bowling Clubs owls Central Coast is calling on all bowlers on the Central Coast to speak out against Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s pact with the Tasmanian Independent MP Andrew Wilkie to introduce a mandatory prec o m m i t m e n t scheme on poker machine players in an attempt to reduce problem gambling.
B
Nobody wants to see problem gambling continue, but Wilkie’s requirements will not stop problem gambling. It will make matters worse driving the small number of problem gamblers that we do have in Clubs to outlets like on-line gambling which is far less regulated and not at all community oriented like Clubs. Under Wilkie’s demands intended players will be required to register their personal details on an identity card with a set upper limit in order to operate a poker machine. That’s all players, not just
problem gamblers. So, social gamblers will also be driven away from Clubs. The sheer impracticality, logistics and exorbitant cost ($57 million for Central Coast clubs alone, according to Clubs NSW) to set up such a mandatory scheme Australia wide will send many smaller Clubs to the wall. That means the loss of jobs, the loss of community facilities and most importantly, the loss of the social infrastructure that these Clubs provide within a community. Bowling Clubs are not dependant on government support, they are self sufficient because of the generosity of Clubs and any legislation that is likely to adversely impact on the profitability and viability of the Club Industry will seriously affect many of out lawn bowling clubs and the extensive range of facilities they offer.
Is the Government going to introduce similar cards to bet at a TAB, a racetrack, a casino or to gamble online? Of Course not! So why should our Clubs bear the brunt of this ridiculous idea? Wilkie’s demands have not been thoroughly researched. The hasty, ill-considered nature of Wilkie’s original demands have now
been exposed by his parliamentary committee’s new proposal that low intensity machines with a $1 bet limit, $120-per hour loss limit and $500 maximum prize will be exempt from the mandatory scheme. In addition to the mandatory pre-commitment scheme on poker machines Wilkie also requires that a withdrawal limit of $250 be imposed on ATMs in venues with poker machines, excluding casinos. This illustrates the double standards of these regulations. There is no evidence that such a draconian scheme is going to reduce problem gambling. What it will do is undermine the viability of our Clubs which are of enormous benefit to the community and to bowls. Bowlers need to make their voice heard to help protect the interests of their respective Clubs and the future of our sport and governments need to be reminded that bowlers vote!
This is absurd because the Australian Government has not set the specifications for mandatory pre-commitment technology. So any assumption of costs on the part of ClubsNSW is hypothetical, and the same goes for alleged job losses. If any jobs are lost, it will be from a decision made by an individual club, and nothing to do with the Government’s plan to help pokie addicts. The contradictions in ClubsNSW’s arguments are clear when you look at their actual policy position. ClubsNSW supports pre-commitment on every machine in every venue across the country, but wants it to be voluntary for gamblers to use it. This would still require the poker machine upgrades they are concerned about. So the majority of the

c o s t s involved for industry are the same in the model they support. The Federal Government’s view is if you are going to make the investment to upgrade poker machines, it is better to introduce a full pre-commitment scheme. I have been liaising with clubs on the Central Coast since January over their concerns. I will continue to work constructively with local clubs to ensure a staged, evidence-based roll-out. I know the good work our clubs do in the community and I will work hard to ensure they can continue that work. But I ask those following this debate to remember that the Government’s proposed changes are aimed at helping pokie addicts and their families. These are people who spend on average $21,000 a year on the pokies – a third of the average Australian annual salary. No business model should rely on profits from other people’s misery. Toukley RSL Bowling Pennants 2011
Camp Breakaway Charity Day
by Barry Middleton
by Lyn Purcell
anton Bowlers, operating out of their home base at Canton Beach Sports Club, Toukley, have run another highly successful charity day for Camp Breakaway, a very worthy organisation that runs seven day respite holidays for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities.
C
This annual event is supported by bowlers from all over the Central Coast and 128 bowlers took to the three greens with one game of 12 ends then an excellent lunch followed by another game of 12 ends. The winning team consisted of F. Holder (L), T. Harris (2nd), M. Harris (3rd) and P. McLean (skip) with a total of 2 wins plus 21 shots. Events like this would
not achieve the results they do without the generous support of business houses and none more so than John Coote Furniture, Tuggerah who donated a $1000 open order as first prize in the major raffle won by Linn Bourke of Woongarrah. Other sponsors such as Bowls@Belmont and ComfitPro provided goods for another raffle with a long list of prizes plus $300 from Saturday’s “Dad’s Army” bowlers and $100 from Toukley District Men’s Bowling Club, all contributing to the total raised on the day and a cheque for $2,900 was presented to Camp Breakaway’s Peter Cross by Canton Bowlers president Garry Darcy. Special mention must be made of the superhuman effort put in by Canton Bowler’s stalwart Bob Phillips in doorknocking business houses and gaining their donations.

oukley RSL Men’s Bowling Club has nominated four grades in the 2011 Pennant season.
T
“For a small club it is a fine effort considering the membership is approximately 150 bowlers with non-bowlers inclusive”, says Barry Middleton, spokesman for Toukley RSL. As the remaining weeks
go by, all four grades will continue in their quest to win their section. “There have been some outstanding individual performances and the four teams are all contenders for Play-Off positions in their respective grades.” “It is that time of the year again as we leave summer behind us, and when the completion of the Pennant season of 2011
approaches.” “We wish all our nominated teams well and to have good fortune and bowl as best they can. Good luck and good bowling”. The Toukley Memorial Women’s Bowling Club can also have also nominated two teams for the 2011 Pennant season. Grade two and Grade four were selected, with Middleton stating that “it is a tribute for
such a small club.” Both teams won their sections and competed in the Play-Offs during the first week of May at Umina Bowling Club. “Although the two teams were eventually eliminated, they are to be congratulated for their combined efforts in successfully reaching the Play-offs”.

Fishing
Fishing, great sport for the kids
by Rob from Bait n Boats
t is good to see a fishing club that looks after the kids and the Woy Woy Pelicans Fishing Club has just got what the doctor ordered, it has had a boost by local bait shop, B’n’B, sponsoring the kids section in its club to focus on junior fishing.
The program was developed to help the kids improve their fishing skills and compete in their own fishing competition where they have their own largest species caught board so they don’t have to compete against the seniors. Have you ever seen the expression of a child when they catch a good fish only to have it beaten the following comp day by a senior. It’s the fastest way to lose kids from fishing. The idea of the program is to build the kids confidence and to keep them interested, knowing they will be rewarded for their efforts by seeing their name on the board with that big fish they caught. Their efforts on competition days are reward by the sponsor giving out fishing rods, tackle boxes full of tackle and money vouchers. The kids just recently went out on their first field trip over to pearl beach where they were taught to
Jesssica and her Bonito catch rig up and bait presentation to catch jewfish. Even though no jewfish were caught, there were a number of flathead and bream . A barbeque dinner was held on the beach while mum and dad kicked back and the kids fished. Over the next months, the program will take the kids into the world of fishing for bream, whiting and flathead with a charter boat trip so they can enjoy the thrill of fishing from a big boat, camping trip to Patonga to a weekend of learning the art of bass fishing at Lake St.
Clair near Singleton. At the moment, there are quite a few girls who are showing the boys how it’s done with one junior girl who has 4 to 5 board fish to her name. The competition is fierce with one sisterly rivalry making for some great entertainment at weigh in. A kid joining a fishing club is a great idea, make for a fun family day or for some serious fishing against other juniors, great for the kids to inter act with other kids and a great way to improve their fishing skills.
Big swell hampers beach fishing by Rob from BaitnBoats
he past week the cold has shown its ugly head reminding us to rug up and for the rock fisherman to be careful fishing the rocks as the big swells start happening, and a reminder about the two rock fisherman who met their fate last week.
T
The jewfish are still around in numbers, Brisbane waters the rip is still producing a lot of fish around the 2 to 5kg. Some beaches are still firing but the big swells have hampered a lot of the jewie guys. Bream have been showing up in numbers with some good reports of school bream up and in around Paddys Channel, around the oyster leases at Hardys Bay. Throw in a few whiting along the way, even though the whiting haven’t really
shown up in numbers as yet, there are some nice size fish being caught. Leather jackets have started to come alive with one local lad by the name of Robert Langston nailed some nice jackets up to 500grams. A lot of tailor has shown up in the estuary with couple of junior anglers, Britney and Ezra from Woy Woy pelicans fishing club, weighing in tailor up to 1.3kg caught around the Woy Woy railway bridge. We had an angler bring in a 132cm shiny toothy critter for identification to our shop. At first site we thought it was an eel, but turned out to be a hairtail, caught out near the mouth of the Hawkesbury, so by the looks of it, hairtail are moving into Hawkesbury system. Blackfish anglers have been rewarded well this week, with the boys out around empire bay getting into fish..Reports of blackfish have been filtering through from The Entrance, being
caught around the edge of weed beds and the bridge pylons. They say green weed has been scarce, but if you see the guys either at Umina or Woy Woy, they seem to have plenty between them.
Salmon schools have been around in good numbers along with tailor mixed in around pearl beach and Lion Island. The fish are of average size, but on light gear they are great sport.
Bonito are also around in good numbers. Shark numbers seem to be up from this time last year with many anglers complaining about these pests taking fresh baits out for kingies and jewfish.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a great deal of info coming in from the outside guys as the swell has been up stopping the boys getting out wide.

The team, who hold a raffle each Saturday in order to raise money to pay their registration fees, decided
to donate the proceeds of a day’s raffle to Mrs Osmotherly. Mrs Osmotherly was paid a visit by the Under 19s coach Junior Johnson, who presented her with $100 to help tide her over. Mrs Osmotherly was extremely grateful of the teams generosity, sending a letter of thanks to the club, explaining that she was deeply touched by
the gesture and that not all youngsters are heartless. She went on to thank the Police for catching the thieves so quickly and wished the boys well in their games for the rest of the season. The two thieves have since been charged with aggravated break and enter, as well as aggravated robbery.
Pearl Beach Tennis turns 30
by Brian Worrall
earl Beach Tennis Club has turned 30 and holding an open day on the 20th May featuring tournaments, prizes and fun games with BBQ food and drinks supplied. All interested persons young and old are invited.
P
From the 1960’s through to the late 1970’s attempts
were made to have a recreational reserve built in Pearl Beach to include tennis facilities. In 1979 approval for stage one of a three stage development was given and facilities including tennis court were completed in May 1981. The playing surfaces are fully maintained and the area is kept in excellent condition, helping to entice continuous and growing use.
The healthy finances of the club, aided by the occasional grant from the State Government Sport & Recreation’ Department, the licensor Gosford Council, temporary loans from members and the large number of casual hiring from weekenders and holiday visitors have allowed the Club to be kept in a high standard expected of such a convenience.

Mariners to take on Scottish superstars
by Beverley Seers
entral Coast Mariners FC is pleased to confirm their appearance in the Clubs first inter national friendly against S c o t t i s h p o w e r h o u s e Glasgow Celtic FC to take place at ANZ Stadium at 7:30pm on Saturday 2 July.
C
Final approval was received from Football Federation Australia yesterday, ensuring the ‘Bhoys’ from one of the most decorated and well supported club sides, not only in the United Kingdom but the world, will take on the men from the Central Coast in preparation for their respective seasons. Mariners chairman, Peter Turnbull today expressed his delight that the match would transpire, noting that the game will provide a unique opportunity for Mariners, Celtic and football fans alike to witness a famed European club side mix it with an A-League Club on New South Wales soil. “This will be a great opportunity for our Members and Supporters to see the Mariners pit their skills against a regular participant in the UEFA Champions League,” Turnbull said. “This match will provide world wide exposure for our club, our partners and our region.” “It would have been superb to have had the game at home and Bluetongue Stadium Management were very supportive of staging the game,” Turnbull said. “But ultimately, it was not our decision and to
Glasgow Celtic FC ensure we have the honour of playing against Celtic in Australia, we have to play the match at the larger venue selected by the tour organisers.” Celtic’s tour of Australia is being organised and underwritten by Tribal Sports Management, and their Managing Director Lou Sticca anticipated that many thousands of football fans from Sydney, the Greater West and the Southern Illawarra region, along with Central Coast fans, will be in attendance at the match. Mariners Head Coach, Graham Arnold added that the fixture will provide a timely test for his side in the lead up to Season 7 of the Hyundai A-League, with the game being extra special for the club’s midfield maestro, Michael McGlinchey who spent his developmental years with the club. “The game gives the players a great opportunity and focus to compete against a team with quality

players like Celtic and that will be an invaluable experience for all of our players,” Arnold said. “The match will also give us the opportunity to see how our players handle the pressure of playing against guys with true international
pedigree”.
