Windswept Central Coast Titles at Wyong by Bob Bourke

Aron Sherriff (left) marker Doug Rose and runner-up Bruce Jewell

he contestants for the 2011 Central Coast (Zone 15) Major Singles, President’s Reserves and Seniors Bowls Titles had to contend with cold, gusty, westerly winds across the greens at Wyong Riverside Bowling Club over two days on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July.

T

Being the great competitors and sportsmen they are, nobody complained and just got

down to doing what they do best, playing top quality bowls. In the Major Singles Final, Aron Sherriff (Ettalong) was up against a determined Bruce Jewell (Terrigal) in a great display of draw bowling that drew applause from the loyal gallery that were rugged up against the blustery conditions. With Aron’s score at 29 and holding two shots, Bruce drove hard and sent the jack flying to stop two rinks away and “killed” the end. Digging deep, Bruce took the next three ends to close

on Aron 29-26 at the 30th end, but on the next end, Aron got the best of a tight packed “head” with shot bowl and a measure for second to take the match and the title 31-26. Aron has now won the Zone Major Singles, Pairs and Fours and has entered the Zone Triples with John Roberts and Harley McDonald. Mark that one on your calendar! Aron stated after the game that the conditions were tricky, but playable. Along the way to the Major Singles title, Aron had

Runner-up Shaun Ireland (left) marker Geoff Armstrong and winner Luke McBeatty to come from behind in the first round to overtake the talented Tony Shoebridge (Avoca) 31-27 and then Tony Scott (The Greens) 31-22 while Bruce defeated Mark Jennings (The Greens) 31-21 and Harley McDonald (Ettalong) 31-17. The President’s Reserve Singles title went to an exciting young newcomer in Luke McBeatty (Everglades) who had a forfeit in the first round and then defeated Scott Merrin (Halekulani) 31-10 with an awesome display of relentless draw bowling. This set up a final berth

against Shaun Ireland (Gwandalan) who had disposed of Peter Hart (Avoca Beach) 31-25 in the first round then a close second round against Dennis Coleman (Munmorah United) 31-28. Shaun led until end 8 when Luke levelled at 6-6 then it was neck and neck with the scores again level at ends 10, 12, 16, 25 and 32 where the score was 3030, but the next end was Luke’s for a final score of 31-30 in a match where both players covered themselves in glory. Luke will now represent

Zone 15 in the under 18 Pairs at the State Titles. In the Senior Singles Championship semi finals, Alan Rogers (Ettalong) defeated Graeme Canobie (The Greens) 31-23 while Tony Swaine (Terrigal) defeated Karl Foster (Ettalong) 31-22. In the final, Alan handled the windy conditions better than Tony and although the score was even at 3-3 on end 5 Alan rattled off the next 6 ends for 10 points and was never headed on his way to a 32-13 victory and the title of 2011 Zone 15 Senior Singles Champion.

Central Coast boys play in France wo boys from the Central Coast were lucky enough to be selected in the Newcastle U13 football side to represent that region in one of the most prestige U13 Club Tournaments in France, the Mondial Pupilles.

T

Mitch Dobson and Jed Hornery were asked to trial for the side through their links to the Hunter Sports High School, and not only did they make the side, they were awarded the Captain and Vice Captain duties respectively. They boarded the plane with the squad and families on May 29 and spent three weeks abroad playing football and sightseeing.

After travelling for over 26 hours and a few days training, they took the field in their first game of the tournament with must anticipation and nerves. Both the boys performed above expectation with Mitch leading the team to sixth place in the pool with three draws. No other Australian team has been able to get a draw amongst this quality of opposition. Jed, playing in goals, was the reason they held some teams to a draw with some great saves and to cap off a great tour, he went on to win the large trophy for best goalkeeping the in pool stages of the competition. The Australian team also won the Fair Play Award and left France with some new friends and great memories.

ixty swimmers joined Swimart Ambassador and Olympic champion Susie O’Neill on Sunday 26 June at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s (RIDBC) Central Coast Splash for Cash.

S

The swimmers swam 1943 laps of Mingara One Fitness and Aquatics Centre’s Olympic sized pool, raising hundreds of dollars for RIDBC. The race between Susie O’Neill and 101.3 Sea FM Central Coast presenter Paddy Gerrard was a close finish, with the victory going to the Olympic swimming champion. Central Coast’s Donna Dening joined in the festivities with her five children as two of Donna’s daughters receive support from RIDBC for their hearing impairment. Matilda, who is 20months, and Elizabeth, who is ten years old, were both born without ear canals and are deaf. “RIDBC has been so important to my family,” said Donna. “We have been offered counselling, early learning and intervention services to developed the girls’ language, and guidance in helping to fit their hearing aids.

“It has been such a relief to have RIDBC’s Gosford office near our home. “Along with RIDBC’s inhome visits, that has really helped me to work around having a family of five,” she continued. “As you can imagine, travelling long distances for health services could have been a bit of a nightmare! “I now know that my girls can grow up to do anything they want to do.” Donna’s sons Caleb and Joshua jumped in the pool on Sunday in support of their sisters and RIDBC. “It was such a great day, and a worthy cause to support,” said Donna. “The support we received from sponsors and swimmers, as well as from Swimart Ambassador Susie O’Neill and 101.3 Sea FM Central Coast’s Paddy Gerrard, was really fantastic” said Chris Rehn, RIDBC Chief Executive. “Children with vision or hearing impairment rely on our services to help them achieve to their full potential. “We can only continue to provide such specialised care with community support, and we remain greatly indebted to those who volunteer their time and efforts at events like Splash for Cash,” he said. With the public able to make donations to Splash for Cash until the end of July,

RIDBC is hoping to build on the $38,000 so far raised during the Splash for Cash season. The money raised will support RIDBC’s Australiawide services, with RIDBC Teleschool able to reach children, families and professionals in remote and regional areas. RIDBC will also contribute to making a difference in the lives of children and families much closer to home, with 21 children in the Central Coast area receiving regular support from RIDBC. Donations can be made through www.splashforcash. com.au. The RIDBC Splash for Cash is proudly supported by Swimart, Australian Hearing, the Mingara One Fitness and Aquatics Centre and 101.3 Sea FM Central Coast. The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children provides vital support to almost 1000 children with significant hearing and/or vision impairment and their families across Australia. RIDBC relies heavily on fundraising and community support to be able to continue to make a difference in children’s lives. In order to maintain its intensive educational and research programs, the organisation needs to raise approximately $2.5 million every month.

entral Coast Mariners has confirmed midfielder Mustafa Amini has been transferred to German Bundesliga Champion BVB Borussia Dortmund.

C

As part of the transfer arrangements, Amini will be instantly loaned back to the Mariners from Monday July 4 until 31 May 2012, allowing him to represent the Central Coast in the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season, as well as the group stage of the 2012 AFC Champions League. The transfer creates a win-win situation for all parties involved, with Amini able to pursue his dreams of playing football for a European heavyweight, while at the same time spending another critical year developing under the guidance of Mariners boss Graham Arnold. Mariner’s fans will thus be treated to another season admiring the silky skills of the young playmaker, while interest in the club in Germany is sure to grow with overseas based fans keeping a watchful eye on the precocious talent. An ecstatic Amini today expressed his appreciation that the Mariners and

Dortmund were able to arrive at such a fantastic outcome. “I’d like to thank Peter Turnbull and Graham Arnold at the Mariners for working on this with Dortmund,” Amini said. “I’m really excited to be joining Dortmund, they’re a big club with amazing supporters.” Having experienced the passion of Dortmund’s fans twice as a spectator while he was training with the club earlier this year, Amini beamed when asked about the potential of playing in front of over 80,000 supporters at the club’s Signal Iduna Park. “It would be amazing,” he said. “But first of all, I want to have another great season with the Mariners, as well as a good Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.” Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Peter Turnbull, said that the transfer represented the best outcome possible for the Mariners and Amini alike. “I am pleased we have been able to secure a much improved deal for all parties, and thank Dortmund for their consideration of our requests. "We now have a deal that satisfies everyone –

Musti’s international future, the clubs needs and more importantly, the fans. “They will now be able to see Musti play out the balance of his original contract plus the Asian Champion’s League group stage." Turnbull said the transfer highlighted the Mariners conscious decision to foster elite young Australian talent, which is a club-wide policy. "We are a club that encourages young Australian players, and that will continue to be the case,” he said. “It is testament to Arnie and our coaching staff that we have five players in the running for the Australian Under 20 World Cup team, and that would have been six had Mat Ryan not been injured. “We also boast the captain of the Qantas U23s. "We wish Musti all the best as he continues his international football education and I know that in the meantime the Mariners will be the focus of his attention and hard work,” Turnbull continued. “We have agreed that when he returns from his exciting European career, it will be to play for the Mariners again.”

Local businessman Brad Worthington of Worthington BMW at Kariong teamed up with the principals of Somersby Equestrian Park to showcase the International 3-a-side Polo in conjunction with the launch of the new BMW 6 Series Convertible. Three Australian representatives took to the field in the shape of Angus Scott from Quirindi, NSW: Dick Doolin, Windsor, NSW and Andrew Williams, Windsor, NSW. Just this week, Williams has been selected to play for the Australian National Team in a two Test Series in South Africa next month. Even the Umpire was highly credentialed, being Jamie Mackay from Dungog, a former 7 goal player and Captain of the Australian Team for 11 years. Other team members were Professional Showjumping rider and

Coach, Martin Gostelow, Somersby, Beau Blundell, East Gresford, NSW and Marty Ingham, SA. After Worthington had launched the BMW 6 Series from beneath a veiled cover at the end of a red carpet entrance, guests were invited to enjoy a carved lunch beside the Polo action. The game was played over 4 sizzling chukkas and the players did not let the crowd down, playing fast

and furious on a paddock that was only just drying out after 400mm of rain the week before. Expert commentator and President of NSW Polo Association Ian McDuie, of Scone kept everyone abreast of the rules combined with his own quick fire style of delivery. In the early part of the match, BMW White had the upper hand over BMW Blue leading 7 goals to 2 at half

time. However, BMW Blue led a hearty comeback in the last two chukkas thanks to some intense support from a captivated crowd on the sidelines; eventually succumbing 9 goals to six. Director of Somersby Equestrian Park, Martin Gostelow said “It was an absolute privilege to play Polo on our own backyard with players of this calibre”, he added that

“The BMW 6 Series looked so at home in this environment and maybe Polo as a sport could also find an ongoing level of support in the shape of our own Amateur League at the Park” Brad Worthington was all smiles as he congratulated all involved and said “I’ve been involved with various models of motor cars over the years but nothing comes close to the success of this

occasion and the launch of the BMW 6 Series” Teams (Handicaps in brackets) BMW White 1.Martin Gostelow (-1) 2. Angus Scott (2) 3. Andrew Williams (5) BMW Blue 1.Beau Blundell (1) 2. Dick Doolin (3) 3. Marty Ingham (3) Angus Scott was voted most valuable player on the day.

Mariners late show stuns Celtic roy Hearfield’s scintillating 86th minute strike was enough for the Central Coast Mariners to stun Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic FC 1-nil in tonight’s international friendly at Sydney’s ANZ stadium.

T

On debut for his new club, Hearfield’s heroics etched him into Central Coast folklore, as the Mariners claimed arguably the biggest scalp in their history. Although it was a preseason friendly, and both sides were coming into the match lacking match fitness, Graham Arnold was still extremely pleased with the efforts of his side. “I thought our defensive structure was again good tonight, although we were rusty in our execution in the final third,” said Arnold. “Overall I thought we played well. “It’s the first time the boys have played in this stadium, and to play a powerhouse side like Celtic was fantastic for them,” he said. “They don’t have their history for no reason. “They’re a top side, with some outstanding players. “It’s their first game, so we played them at the best time in their tour. “It was a great chance to see Australian players test themselves against that type of opposition,” said Arnold. Facing a strong Celtic side bolstered by the inclusions of skipper Scott Brown, Beram Kayal, and Shaun Maloney among others – a stern test awaited the Mariners in this,

their historic first international friendly. Graham Arnold went for a combination of the exuberance of youth, and the nous of experienced veterans to combat the Scottish threat. Qantas Young Socceroo FIFA World Cup hopefuls Bernie Ibini-Isei, Trent Sainsbury and Sam Gallagher were all named in Arnold’s match day squad. Former Celtic player and New Zealand International Michael McGlinchey was awarded the skipper’s armband, a just reward for one of the Mariners most consistent performers last season. It was a composed start to the match for the Mariners, who weren’t overawed by a meeting with one of the giants of Scottish football. Patrick Zwaanswijk and Rostyn Griffiths calmly worked together to repel the early raids, and ensured that in transition the Mariners would play the ball out from the back. Chances were few and far between in the opening half as both sides attempted to settle into the rhythm of the game. The match was played predominantly in the middle third, as the midfielders became the most influential players in the game. Bernie Ibini-Isei gave the Celtic defense a fright with his sheer turn of speed in one of his first forays into the penalty area. It was acceleration that would have made Usain Bolt proud, but the well-drilled defenders were quick to learn their lesson, and thereafter, chances were limited for the young striker.

Celtic’s best chance of the half came from a surging run from Mark Wilson. His cross was whipped towards the far post, but it was too good for everyone and sailed harmlessly over the by-line. New acquisition Adriano Pellegrino showed his class threading some subtle passes through to Daniel McBreen and Ibini-Isei, but it was too be a familiar combination that would almost unlock the resolute Celtic defense. In the twilight of the half, Josh Rose surged forward and interchanged a lovely combination of passes with Oliver Bozanic. Even Celtic coach Neil Lennon was full of praise for the left-sided defender, believing his constant runs posed a threat to his side. Both coaches wrung the changes in the opening minutes of the second half, with the highly rated Englishman Gary Hooper being called into action. The talented attacker showed some deft touches as the visitors from Glasgow upped the tempo in a valiant effort to take the match to the Mariners. Substitute Anthony Stokes almost gave Celtic the ultimate reward for this positive approach on the hour mark. A precision pass from midfield released Stokes, before Mariners custodian Justin Pasfield sensed the danger and rushed off his line to narrow the angle. Had Stokes shot a fraction of a second earlier, Celtic would have taken a decisive 1-nil lead. As is so often the case in football after being under

the pump, the Mariners immediately counter-attacked on the next play. Rose again surged forward and provided a dipping cross through to an unmarked Pellegrino. The latter couldn’t take advantage of the delivery, spurning his attempted header wide. The match sank into a carbon copy of the first half as both midfields tried to get over the top of their opponents. Scott Brown was constantly frustrating the Mariners, and veteran John Hutchinson and McGlinchey tried valiantly to link up with their forwards. Just as the match appeared headed for a scoreless draw Celtic manufactured a chance from nothing. It was left to one of the youngest players in Mariners colours to defuse the situation. Trent Sainsbury pulled off a tremendous last-ditch challenge on the fleet-footed Joe Ledley. It was a tackle that even made the Celtic faithful applaud generously. With only minutes remaining in regular time it appeared that not even the Mariners could pull off a Houdini escape this time.

Neil Lennon visits the Central Coast

by Ben O’Neill

entral Coast M a r i n e r s welcomed UK football royalty to the region with Glasgow Celtic manager Neil Lennon visiting Gosford prior to his teams’ international friendly match with the Yellow and Navy at ANZ Stadium.

C

Having ventured to Australia a day earlier than the majority of the Celtic touring party, Lennon made the short journey up the F3 freeway to take in the sights of the Central Coast, visit Bluetongue Stadium, and provide ardent Celtic and Mariners fans with the opportunity to meet one of their football heroes. Arriving at Bluetongue Stadium at 11.00am, Lennon, alongside Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold and midfielder Michael McGlinchey spoke with

Somebody forgot to tell Troy Hearfield who found himself unmarked just outside the box in the 86th minute. The midfielder struck a stinging shot that powered into the net. Aided by a deflection from the Celtic defence, it was still an exhibition of the new recruit’s undeniable talent. There was one more heartstopping moment in stoppage time when Celtic thought they had done enough to earn an equaliser. A large amount of yellow and navy in the box combined three times to deny the visitors, highlighted by a desperate clearance off the line by the wily Zwaanswijk. A tough 1-nil win was a dream result for the Mariners, but Graham Arnold knows it means nothing with the season proper still months away. One thing is for sure, the Central Coast Mariners proved tonight that they thrive under the pressure of an international friendly.

waiting media before posing for photo opportunities with local dignitaries, fans, and radio competition winners. Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Peter Turnbull, NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services (and passionate Mariners and Celtic fan), the Honourable Michael Gallacher, Mayor of Wyong Shire Council, Cr Doug Eaton, and Deputy Mayor of Wyong Shire Council and Mariners Director, Cr Bob Graham, were among the VIP’s on hand to greet the Northern Ireland great. Having also represented Leicester City, Crewe Alexandra and Nottingham Forest during a decorated playing career, Lennon is considered one of Celtic’s favourite sons having amassed over 200 games for the Scottish giants. Mariners Chairman, Peter Turnbull, said it was fantastic for the Central Coast to have someone of Lennon’s calibre visit the area in order to generate long-term exposure for the region. “Neil Lennon is immensely popular with the estimated 10 million fans Celtic have scattered in every corner of the globe,” Turnbull said. “Having Neil on our doorstep provides an

inestimable return for the region in terms of the potential to capitalise on tourism, as well as the general impression of the city on the world map.” Happy to spend time with waiting fans, despite his long haul journey from the other side of the world, Lennon said his first impressions of Australia were great, and that he was delighted to see the Central Coast. “Australia’s is always a country I’ve wanted to visit, so it’s fantastic to be down here with Celtic. “I liked what I saw very much on my drive into Gosford – this stadium is terrific.” While at Bluetongue Stadium, Lennon also took part in a MarinersACTIVE training session with 32 students from Gosford Public School. Led by Mariners Youth Development Coordinator, Damien Brown, the lucky school kids also gained input from Arnold and McGlinchey as they practiced some of the skills needed to one day play for either the Mariners or Celtic. Following the session, Lennon travelled back to Sydney to oversee a training session with half his squad.

Central Coast Division of Country Rugby League Round 15 Sharks score win in round 15 he TerrigalW a m b e r a l Sharks under 17s rugby team won with 40 points to 16 against a physical Kincumber side on Sunday, July 3.

“The Sharks led 18-6 at the break, and while the Sharks forward dominated, it was their backs crossed for six or seven tries that

provided the show of entertaining rugby league,” said a representative of the Terrigal-Wamberal Sharks Rugby Club. “The Shark’s three points and player’s player went to Dylan Selby, who again orchestrated the attack from half and through quality use of the ball.” “The two points went to winger Michael McDonnell, who scored two tries and

made plenty of metres when he touched the ball, while the one point went to Josh Lyon, who made plenty of yardages and was enthusiastic in defence, as well as kicking six conversations.” “The Adam Fyfe Coaches Award of the week went to Blake Lang, who proved a handful to the opposition defence, crossing for two tries.”

Hawks make good comeback in round 15 he Entrance Tigers Rugby League team played the Toukley Hawks on Sunday, July 3.

T

“It was a shaky start to the game, with Toukley coming out of the block firing; after fifteen minutes the Hawks were up 8-0”,

said club representative John Strange. “We knew we would finish over the top of them, but we needed to gain control of the game before the points got away from us.” Jason Jackson crossed after twenty five minutes to make it 8-6. When Jared

Hammer scored just before half time, we knew we had the tough win.” “The final score ended up 30-14. The boys ground out a good, tough win and a win that will see our season well and truly back on track.”

half performance was not the start we would have liked, with the condition of the ground contributing somewhat to the mistakes made”, said a representative of the Erina Eagles. “In the second half, we

started with a whole new attitude. We had more go-forward, better attack, more talking and far better teamwork.” “A lowlight of the game was the number of sinbins for either side.”

“Once again, first grade started strong and were on top after 20 minutes to lead 8-0, before conceding a couple of quick tries to trail 18-8 at the break”, said a representative of the Hawks.

“Another couple of quick tries by the Roosters took the game away from us, but we continued to play our best and scored a couple of good tries in the last 20 minutes.”

“The boys who played did a great job with five minutes to go; we were attacking there line and were only down 10-6” said the representative for the Razor Backs. “Unfortunately though, we were penalised when in possession of the ball and

incurred three penalties in a row. We went down fighting 14-6” “We were only four points down at half time and we knew the game would go all the way to the wire and it did.”

Central Coast v Blacktown Spartans Played at Francis Park, Blacktown. Sunday 3 July

his fixture was switched from Pluim Park to Francis Park due to the rain-affected pitch at Pluim Park and the result could potentially end up ending Central Coast’s finals hopes.

T

They had looked good for the money, though having a 3-2 lead until the final ten minutes. Despite an early goal for the Spartans via the boot of Simon Zahra, the Coast gained the upper hand before half time, when Michael Simmonds equalised after twenty one minutes and then Matt Mitchell got his first of a double, with a penalty, just before the break. In a see-sawing game, Zahra brought the Spartans level seven minutes after

the break with the game’s second penalty, before Mitchell again gave the Coast the lead with around a quarter of an hour left. But Zahra again drew the Spartans level with yet another penalty, awarded for handball, before Todd Macrae, following a corner, put the Spartans in front, at just the right time. “The game could have gone either way”, said Spartan’s coach, Ben de Hann. “It was not an intensive game, and it was a little bit lethargic, to be honest”. “But we were without a number of players, such as Glen McPherson and Luke Infanti (both suspended) and Tom Spencer (injured) so the win is enough”. Central Coast’s Peter Preston was not happy with some of the decisions surrounding the match,

including having to play Spartans twice on their home ground. “This seems to be happening quite often, with all teams’ he said, “and is not fair to anybody. “The worst part is that we always get told at the last minute and have to completely change our arrangements, not to mention loss of much needed income from our canteens, etc. “I thought that their first penalty was a pretty doubtful decision, although the second one was OK, and I thought with our penalty, they could have got a red card as he was the last man, but he went unpunished, not even a yellow card, apart from the penalty, of course,” he continued. “But credit to the Spartans, they came at us pretty hard in the second

half. “They hung in there and got the result. “We were pretty average against them in the first round but I thought we were good value this time. “Maybe if we were a bit mentally stronger, we could have hung on. “We were up 2-1 and then 3-2 and so it is disappointing to lose from there. “But we didn’t defend set plays and that was it”.

hat an amazing finish at St George Stadium as a gallant Central Coast, down to nine players for the last ten minutes, snuck a winner right at the death to keep their season alive.

W

It was also a repeat of the first leg played at Pluim Park, when St. George had 70% of the game but lost 2-0! The result didn’t seem likely after Ivo de Jesus equalised for St George from the penalty spot in the eighty third minute. The Coast were reduced to nine at that point following the dismissal of Louis Bozanic for a second yellow card and Dale Hall for handball, and if a winner was going to come, the chances were it would be from the home side.

Central Coast had taken a first half lead when Matt Mitchell charged down a clearance from Saints keeper, Luke Turnbull, the ball ricocheting back into goal. But despite holding the majority of possession, and territory, St George were not able to get past the solid Coast defence. The second half proved a different matter, however. The send off of the Coast’s Louis Bozanic, after receiving a second yellow, in the seventy third minute, gave St George a distinct advantage and the Saints pushed forward in numbers in desperate search of the equaliser. Chances were coming regularly for St George as gaps appeared, but as the game wore on, the Coast still hung on. But that handball by Hall

saw the Coast down to nine, and when de Jesus put away the resultant penalty, St George piled on the pressure. The Saints came closest when David Smith hit the post in the eighty sixth minute, while a free kick just outside the box by de Jesus was cleared away by an increasingly desperate Coast. As it seemed that the draw would be the final result, in a fast counter attack, and with St George pushed up, Central Coast charged down on Turnbull’s goal and with the Saints defence outnumbered, it was left to Jamie Lobb who hammered home in the seventh minute of time added on. There was barely time for St George to kick off and threaten one last attack but it was the Coast who celebrated a stunning victory.

“That was so important”, said Peter Preston. “Had we lost tonight, our season would have been over. “But we really dug in and that got us a welcomed result,” he said. “St George certainly have a lot of good ball players and credit to them, but even though they had a lot of possession, I didn’t think they had a lot of chances, at least in the first half when the ball was always in front of us”. “The second half was different but credit to us as well,” he continued. “I am still not sure how we were 2 v 1 at the end when we broke, and it was almost 3 v 1”. Kory Babington could hardly believe it. “I am so disappointed, times ten, gutted,” he stated. “It’s not as if we played badly but again, we just didn’t take our chances. “Our concentration slipped at crucial moments and we really need to keep the intensity over the full ninety minutes,” he said. “Our consistency is a bit of a problem and we sometimes lack that sense of urgency. “But credit to the Coast, they deserved their dues at the end of the day”.

s the season winds down with five rounds remaining, it is doubtful that last year’s first grade promotion teams, The Entrance and Avoca, are likely to reach the WPL play offs for top honours and seem destined for a yo-yo ride back to first grade.

A

If the ‘two up two down’ rule is applied to next seasons competition then the question is, “will Gosford have two teams in the WPL?” Following last Saturdays one nil defeat of Kariong, and then Sunday’s two nil defeat of Terrigal playing in back-to-back games, sees them climb to the number one spot in AAW1. Now having a slender three point lead over Kariong and Berkley Vale, and East Gosford six points off the pace, it is a close race. Kariong, East Gosford and Terrigal have games in hand which could prove to

be critical games for teams chasing first and second spots in the first grade competition. Terrigal also are not out of it and could be the surprise. The WPL is a tad more predictable, and whilst Avoca captain, Biddy Holstein, was a stand out in Avoca’s 6-1 loss to Tuggerah played last Sunday at Erina High School, Avoca have lost any opportunity in gaining a top four spot, as have The Entrance girls. Both teams, promoted from last year’s first grade, have demonstrated courage in competing at the top flight this year and should set the example for any first graders aspiring to play at the peak of the local football competition in 2012. This coming Saturday Avoca take on Wyoming at home kicking off at 5pm, while on Sunday, The Entrance host Gosford and Tuggerah are at home against Doyalson both with a 2:15 KO. Gosford got away to a great start, but Avoca Beach was able to peg them back to record a hard fought win. Gosford played exceptional rugby in the first half to dominant the scoreboard. They held a 26 point to 10 lead at the halftime break and deserved that lead. During that period, Gosford had several good players, but the best were prop Brad Porter and loose forward Chris Comerford. They were strong both in attack and defence and were making their impact on the game. Porter, in his 150th game for the club, was laying a strong foundation for his team. Gosford scored both their tries in the first half and deserved to be leading at the break. The second half, however, saw a strong Avoca Beach resurgence. They won the second half by 22 points to 3 and totally dominated the scorecard. With about 15 minutes to go in the game, Avoca Beach had clawed their way back to trial by only 26-25, and the last quarter of an hour was a real tussle. Gosford kicked a penalty goal to go to a lead of 29-25 before Avoca Beach scored their fourth try, right on the fulltime whistle to snatch the win. Avoca Beach prop Luke Sheridan was able to crash

rue the result in terms of the semi-final result. Best for Ourimbah were five-eight Joel Wagner, and fellow backs Dane McNamara and Anthony Eriksson. Ourimbah led by 25 points to nil at the break and were never in doubt of winning this match. Best for Warnervale was prop Kevin McNamara. Ourimbah-45 Tries: Brett Cunningham 2, Tyler Jones, Jordan Deaves, Steven Pike, Anthony Eriksson Goals: Anthony Erickson (3 conversions, 3 penalties) Warnervale-0

over right on fulltime to score his second try and to gain the win for the home team. Sheridan was the best player for Avoca Beach on the day. Their other good players were second rower Adam Winter and halfback Dave Horton. Both players were strong all match but certainly made their mark in the second half. It was an excellent fight back by Avoca Beach, and once again proved they are on track for another big end to the season. Avoca Beach, with the win, leapfrogs Gosford and

takes the competition lead. However, the game showed that both teams will be strong contenders for the Premiership this year. This was an intense game of rugby, with plenty of action, and a game that went right down to the final seconds. Avoca Beach-32 Tries:Luke Sheridan 2, Justin Staben, Matt Maloney Goals: Matt Maloney (3 conversions, 2 penalties) Gosford-29 Tries:Alistair Lock, Josh Reid

Goals: Tim Hill (2 conversions, 5 penalties)

Ourimbah recorded their first win in well over a month, when they convincingly defeated Warnervale by 45 points to nil at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The size of this win was a surprise, as many would have expected this game to go right down to the wire. Ourimbah certainly did strike form in this game. They ran in 6 tries, in what proved a really dominant performance. Warnervale simply had one of those days and will

Kariong confirmed their third spot on the ladder with a good win over Northlakes at Slade Park by 49 points to 21. Kariong was always in front, but there were times in the game where Northlakes got close. With 15 minutes to go Kariong only led by 31 points to 21, but they always seemed to be that little bit more in control of proceedings. Kariong cemented their dominance in the final stages of the match when the visitors were able to cross for several late tries. Best for Kariong were fullback Derek Peachey who raced in for three tries, and he was well supported by half back Scott Hanley. Northlakes never gave up and they were best served by Taena Nesbitt and replacement player Scott Godfrey. Northlakes-21 Tries:Taena Nesbitt, Reihana Hemopo, Scott

Godfrey Goals:Marshall Hemopo (1 conversion) Scott Godfrey (2 conversions) Kariong-49 Tries: Derek Peachey 3, Lucas Koschel, Sione Malu, Hawa Mapalinga, Moanna Talakai Goals:Scott Hanley (7 conversions)

Woy Woy caused an upset when they defeated Terrigal by 19 points to 12 at Woy Woy Oval. Woy Woy led by 14 points to 5 and were not to be headed for the remainder of the game. Woy Woy have threatened a performance like this for a few weeks now and it came to fruition yesterday. Woy Woy had several good players, but none were better than Nick Cama and Kane Burns. Terrigal were always close on the scoreboard but injuries during the game did disrupt their performance, with two ambulances being called throughout the match. Best for Terrigal were Steve Bright and Damien Woods. This win will give Woy Woy a real impetus for the remainder of the season, while the loss for Terrigal does put pressure on their semi-final aspirations. Woy Woy-19 Tries:Kane Burns, Kevin Pike, Nick Cama Goals: Andrew McNamara (2 conversions) Terrigal-12 Tries: Steven Bright, Jono Small Goals: Damien Woods (1 conversion)

Round 13- First Grade Results, July 9 voca Beach conďŹ rmed their position at the top of the CCRU competition as a result of their 35 points to 10 win over Ourimbah at Ourimbah Rugby Park.

A

The ďŹ rst half was quite even, with nothing between the two teams, but the second half saw the visitors increase their lead towards victory. Both teams played well from the opening whistle. Avoca Beach only led by 10 points to 5 at the halftime break, so at that stage, the game was there for the taking for both sides. Avoca Beach scored 4 tries to 2 in the match and that was a fair indication of the difference between the two teams. The best player for Avoca Beach was lock Peter Steele, who played strongly all game. He was good in the lineouts as well as in general play. He was very well supported by winger Matt Maloney who was able to post 20 personal points for his team. Flanker Brad Sheridan was also very good and was everywhere in both attack and defence. Ourimbah were best served by No.8 Jordan Deaves, lock Tyler Jones and fullback Anthony Erickson. The win conďŹ rms Avoca Beach at the top of the competition ladder while Ourimbah are just out of the top four, and need to win regularly for the remainder of the season to make the 2011 semi-ďŹ nals. Ourimbah-10 Tries: Isaac Blowers, Dane McNamara Avoca Beach-35 Tries: Jeremy Etcell, Peter Steele, Matt Anderson, Matt Maloney Goals: Matt Maloney (3 conversions, 3 penalties)

Kariong continued their good recent form with a

50 points to 21 win over Warnervale at Kariong Oval. There was nothing between the two teams in the ďŹ rst half, and Warnervale led the match for quite a while. It was only really in the last quarter of the match that Kariong conďŹ rmed their victory, and they really did cement the win with two tries in the ďŹ nal 5 minutes. Even though the scoreboard looked like quite a convincing win for Kariong, it was quite an intense and close match for much of the game. However, it was a loss for Warnervale, and their chances of the making the top four is now quite difďŹ cult. Best for Kariong were winger Lucas Koschel, who scored 3 tries, anker Iliiesa Navatu, and fullback Derek Peachey who continued his good recent tryscoring form with another two tries. Best players for Warnervale were props Kevin McNamara and Tony Paulo, while Richie Houston was strong all day. Kariong-50 Tries: Lucas Koschel 3, Derek Peachey 2, Darren Cooley, Dean Furley,

Iliiesa Navatu Goals: Scott Hanley (5 conversions) Warnervale-21 Tries:Kevin McNamara, Luke Robertson, Pat Baker Goals:Jarryd Lees (2 penalties)

Northlakes struck form with an away win at Woy Woy Oval, defeating Woy Woy by 55 points to 26. Even though it was a high scoring match, the overall game was much tighter than this scoreline indicates. Woy Woy opened the scoring with a try before Northlakes hit their straps with four tries in the remainder of the ďŹ rst half. Northlakes led by 26 points to 5 at the half time break and the match appeared to be all over. However, Woy Woy fought back in the early stages of the second half and the scores became quite close midway through the second half, before Northlakes conďŹ rmed their win in the latter stages of the game. It was an exciting game of rugby with plenty of try scoring action. Best for Northlakes on the day were centre Brenton

Mannings Sports

Law who scored three tries, fullback Wade Dignam who was dangerous all day, and Marshall Hemopo who posted a personal tally of 15 points. Woy Woy never gave in, but their best players on the day were Nick Garnett and Steve Martin. Woy Woy-26 Tries: Nick Garnett 2, Steve Martin, Grant McLellan Goals: Andrew McNamara (3 conversions) Northlakes-55 Tries: Brenton Law 3, Brad Hayes 2, Marshall Hemopo, Wade Dignam, Bill Moroney, Jacob Fitzgerald Goals: Marshall Hemopo (5 conversions)

Terrigal defeated The Entrance by 32 points to nil at Joseph Banks Oval and placed themselves in fourth spot on the competition ladder. It was an important win for Terrrigal, but it was one

that did not come easily. The Entrance played well and with Terrigal only leading by 6 points to nil at the halftime break it was anybody’s game at that point. However, Terrigal was able to score 4 tries to nil in the second half to secure the vital win. Best for Terrigal were Jono Small, Ryan Metcalfe and Ryan Atkins. The Entrance was best served by Ricky Dault and Clint Guyatt. The Entrance- 0 Terrigal-32 Tries:Damien Woods, Mitchell Clack, Ryan Atkins,Ryan Metcalfe Goals:Damien Woods (3 conversions, 2 penalties)

Round 14 Preview, July 16, 2011 everal games are very important this Saturday in terms of the 2011 CCRU competition.

S

Kariong are at home to Avoca Beach in what looms as a very interesting clash. Terrigal and Ourimbah meet at The Haven Oval and this game is important in terms of the semi-final race. Northlakes versus Warnervale is the local derby and this is the last throw of the dice for these two teams in terms of the semi-final race. Both Kariong and Avoca Beach were winners from last week, and with Avoca Beach placed first and Kariong placed third, this

game holds huge interest and is the obvious choice for the Match of the Day. These two teams have met in all the recent Grand Finals and Avoca Beach have made the win in these battles. Kariong will be most keen to overcome this and to win the game on Saturday. Avoca Beach are in great form and have won all their games in recent weeks. Kariong have done much the same and these two teams are the form teams in recent weeks. Kariong are at home and this will be a big advantage. This match will tell all supporters just where these two teams are in terms of

the Premiership race. Avoca Beach have a good all round team with no obvious weaknesses, while Kariong are strong up front, while their outside backs, if they get good ball, can be very dangerous from all parts of the field. This game holds huge interest. It will be close and will go right down to the wire. Terrigal are at home to Ourimbah at The Haven Oval. Ourimbah won this clash at the start of the season, and will be keen to repeat the dose. However, Terrigal know they are in fourth spot and a win this Saturday will go

a long way to cement this spot. This will be another very close game and the result could go either way. Both teams have very good forward packs but, if anything, Ourimbah will be the more dominant in that area, but Terrigal probably do have a little bit more potency in their backline. But both teams know that a win is vital, and because of that, both teams will go for the whole 80 minutes. Perhaps the only difference between these two teams is the fact that Terrigal is at home. This should be a very intense game of rugby. The clash between

weather on the first day was atrocious, with heavy rain and extremely strong wind. The second half of the game was a close contest

with the winners being Merri Skinner, Ida Campbell, Dawn Haworth and Patricia Bellamy (skip) and the runners-up were Diane Elsom, Shirley Taylor, Carol Bryant and Gail Payne (skip).

on Saturday may be more important. This will be a great game of rugby. Gosford are at home to The Entrance at Gosford Showground Field. The Entrance were very much in the race last Saturday before losing to Terrigal. This Saturday, however, they also meet a team with Premiership aspirations and who are coming off a bye. Gosford will be ready to get back on track after losing their last game two weeks ago. Gosford will be favourites in this match, but The Entrance as usual will go for the full 80 minutes.

Warnervale and Northlakes at Slade Park will not be for the faint hearted. They are very intense local rivals and both teams will be desperate to win. Warnervale have been semi-final aspirants in recent weeks but recently have lost two very tight games. Warnervale meet on Saturday a team that had a great win last Saturday and who are displaying good recent form. Northlakes would love to win this game but it will go right down to the final minute of the match. This year, it was our no. 4 Pennant Players who brought it home, and there was much excitement in the Club when the girls arrived back at the Club. This was because it was a Wednesday, and all the men bowlers were there to congratulate them. There was lots of food and wine, and the girls were still celebrating when the Dart players arrived at 7PM. There was a certain lady who let all the balloons go twice to the ceiling, not a player, but someone who celebrated with them. The Pennant players are to play in the group D Pennant playoffs at Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club on June 5, 6 and 7, we wish them luck.

Bream have been a big mover of late, with some great bream being taken around Woy Woy Bay and Saratoga Flats, where there seems to be plenty of school bream about, filling bag limits. Whiting have been in good numbers with local lads catching good quantities of whiting, with the majority being decent in size and weight. Tube worms, nippers, peeled prawns, blood worms (when available) and strip squid, lightly compressed with a knife handle to tenderise it, have been the pick of baits. Orange Grove stretch,

the Northern end of Paddys Channel and the mouth of Brisbane Water have got plenty of whiting action going on. My local source at The Entrance tells me the whiting influx seen around Brisbane Water has been slow to catch on around their area; however they are increasing in numbers every day, with some nice bream and good blackfish around the bridge and weed beds in The Entrance lakes. For those who love their leather jacket fishing, the rip bridge has been fishing exceptionally well. A useful tip to increase your catch is to use a dropper rig to eliminate snags and to keep your bait just off the bottom. The blackfish brigade seems to be catching blackies consistently. While fishing the Woy Woy water front during the week, I witnessed one gentleman catch 5 nice blackfish in

the corner of the Woy Woy baths. The usual haunts are still producing fish St Huberts island; however, Woy Woy baths and the main stretch in the Empire Bay channel and Green Point are prominent catchments. The beach crew have been out in full force with the nice weather, with good catches of bream, whiting, tailor and salmon; a nice jew fish of 17 kilograms was taken on a strip bait of mullet at Pearl Beach recently. Hairtail have been popping up at Box Head and Patonga, pilchards on ganged 3/0 hooks will do the trick to catch these toothy critters. Stick to the deep holes and deep water for your chance to catch these guys. It’s good to see that fishing is doing well and let’s hope the run of fine weather keeps on coming.

Mariners show their class to see off Blue Devils T

Local to run in international comp

by Russ Gibbs

he Central Coast Mariners breezed past Belconnen United in the opening match of their short pre-season Canberra tour, downing the Blue Devils 5-0 on a freezing cold evening at McKellar Park, in front of a crowd of just under 1,000.

The Mariners thought they had got off to a wonder start with a goal inside the first minute only to see it chalked off in bizarre circumstances. Oliver Bozanic showed his pace with a forceful run down the left flank, and his low cross was confidently finished by Michael Baird only for referee Brett Woodford to disallow the effort, as there were two balls on the pitch. There was almost constant Mariners pressure in the opening quarter, and Sheppard had to be at his best to beat away a fierce drive from Adriano Pellegrino from fully thirty metres to preserve the early status quo. It was inevitable that the Mariners would break the deadlock though and the opening came on the quarter hour mark. A cross into the penalty area ricocheted off at least three players before falling kindly to Rostyn Griffiths who blazed a low right foot shot through a crowd of players from twelve metres past a helpless Sheppard. The home team lifted a little after this and Taylor Beaton, who had trials with the Mariners in 2008 and scored twice in a 2-1 win against his own club, tested out Justin Pasfield with a fierce strike on 28 minutes that was unfortunately aimed straight at the Mariners shotstopper. Almost immediately, the Mariners should have

doubled their lead when Baird collected a knock-down and rounded Sheppard only to find the side-netting from an acute angle. Baird finally found the scoresheet in the 35th minute when Pedj Bojic crossed into the box and the tall striker nudged the ball past the advancing Sheppard and swept it into the net to double the visitors lead. Baird’s unlucky evening continued shortly afterwards when he flicked a beautiful angled header over Sheppard only to see the linesman’s flag raised for offside. The Mariners did make it 3-0 six minutes before the interval, when Bojic strode forwards and flashed a shot towards goal, which deflected off a Blue Devils defender and looped into the net to give Graham Arnold’s team a comfortable half-time lead. The second half started much the same as the first ended, with the Mariners on the front foot. Pellegrino was instrumental in most of the Central Coast’s most threatening attacking forays and it was from his run and slide-rule pass nine minutes after the re-start that Troy Hearfield shot narrowly wide. Barely two minutes later, Baird was left frustrated by substitute ‘keeper Jason Denham as he advanced clean through the Blue Devils defense. Showing a little preseason rustiness in front of goal, the striker telegraphed his intentions and his casual curled shot was pushed round the post by the agile Belconnen custodian. At the other end, Pasfield was a virtual spectator with Taylor Beaton’s dipping shot seventeen minutes from time hardly troubling the Mariners number one as the home team, who gained a modicum

of parity in the centre of the park during the second forty-five minutes, rarely threatened the visitors’ goal. Weathering this mini Belconnen revival, the Mariners added a fourth goal in the 79th minute when substitute Matt Simon laid off a simple pass to Baird who turned it into the net from close range. The gloss was added to the scoreboard six minutes later, when Baird finally got the hat-trick he had been searching for all night breaking through the centre and shooting straight at Denham who couldn’t prevent the ball slipping out of his grasp and into the net, to round off a satisfactory night for the Hyundai A-League team. Mariner’s awesome foursome set for Colombian quest quartet of Central Coast Mariners youngsters have today been selected in the Qantas Young Socceroos squad bound for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.

Following months of preparation, Mustafa Amini, Bernie Ibini-Isei, Sam Gallagher and Trent

Sainsbury were confirmed in Jan Versleijen’s 21 man touring party early this afternoon. Pitted against Costa Rica, Ecuador and Spain in the group stage, the young Yellow and Navy stars will have their work cut out for them to advance from one of the toughest pools of the tournament. Nevertheless, flying attacker Ibini-Isei said both he and the team is confident

heading into the tournament. “We have a tough group, but I’d prefer it that way, that’s what a World Cup’s about,” Ibini-Isei said. “We’ve already done some video analysis and preparation for Ecuador because they are our first opponent.” Ibini-Isei’s selection in the Young Socceroos squad marks a rapid rise for the former Blacktown City gun, with the striker having won

the golden boot award for the 2010/11 edition of the National Youth League. Having scored 12 goals in that competition, IbiniIsei went on to net on his Hyundai A-League debut for the Mariners against Wellington Phoenix last year before giving the Glasgow Celtic defence a torrid time during the Mariners international friendly against the Bhoys on Saturday 2 July.

In stellar form for the Qantas Young Socceroos against the Mariners in last Thursday’s 1-all draw at Bluetongue Stadium (the attacking ace rattled the woodwork twice from long range), Ibini-Isei said he’s delighted with his call up. “This is definitely a great feeling. I’m very happy with where I’m at at the moment, I can’t wait.” Sixteen members of current squad were part of

the Qantas Young Socceroos squad that were runner’s up to DPR Korea at the AFC U-19 Championships last year, whilst a further five of those members, including Sam Gallagher, were also part of the Australian squad that competed at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009. The Qantas Young Socceroos will hold a farewell function in Sydney at the end of the week before travelling to the USA on Saturday for a pretournament camp in Denver, Colorado where they will play friendly matches against fellow World Cup finalists the Korea Republic (20 July) and England (22 July). The team will then move to their base camp in the Colombian city of Manizales, situated 2,180m above sea level, where they will be based for the first phase of the tournament. The side will play their first match of the tournament against Ecuador on Sunday 31 July, and then face Costa Rica on Wednesday 3 August before their final group match against Spain on Saturday 6 August. The top two teams from each of the groups and the four third placed teams with the highest number of points will then progress to the round of 16 (9 & 10 August). The Quarter-Finals will be played on 13 & 14 August, Semi-Finals on 17 August with the Final and 3rd/4th place play-off on Saturday 20 August. The Qantas Young Socceroos qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup having made the final of the AFC U19 Youth Championships in Zibo, China last year. SBS Television will broadcast all of the Qantas Young Socceroos matches from the FIFA U-20 World Cup live, as well as the Semi-Finals and Final of the tournament. Former Mariners player Marc Warren, now with sister club Sheffield United in the UK, was also selected in the squad. Budding Central Coast custodian Mathew Ryan – who looked a shoe in for the squad prior to sustaining an unfortunate knee injury earlier this year – will watch his Australian teammates from home as he continues his rehabilitation for the Mariners 2011/12 Hyundai A-League campaign.
