The Final saw the scores even on quite a few occasions with the lead changing a number of times. The many spectators really enjoyed the high standard of play on show from these ladies. The winner of the 2011 Champion of Champions is Fay Larkin (Bateau Bay) and Runner Up is Denise Ellison (The Entrance). All players in this event certainly proved why they are their club’s 2011 Major Singles winner.

Major changes to cricket competition structure announced T

he Central Coast Cricket Association has announced a major change to the competition structure on the Central Coast. The Executive Committee consulted with member clubs and determined that by making matches on turf pitches more accessible to more players the standard of play will improve and playing on the Central Coast will be more attractive. The aim of the new strategy is to provide encouragement and opportunities for all players by improving the standard of cricket and to enhance the pathway for elite and potentially-elite player to higher levels of cricket. The previous “Grade/ Club” structure of the competition will be changed to a more team-oriented approach. In seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13, this will entail 10 teams per division as opposed to the previous 13.

In 2013/14, the divisions will be reduced to 8 teams per division. The divisional structure will see Premier League, Division 1 and Division 2 playing on turf pitches. The 13 existing clubs will continue to operate with the new structure, giving them the opportunity to be more ﬂexible in nominating the divisions in which their lower-grade teams are suited to play. There will be process of promotion and relegation from each division, thus giving teams in the lower grades the chance to build their teams up to perform at the higher level. There are a number of conditions in the promotion/

relegation system which have been agreed to by all clubs and take effect in 2011/12. The new structure will create a more level playing ﬁeld in all divisions thus making playing cricket an attractive proposition for all. Lower divisions will be made up in consultation with individual clubs with the minimum requirement for participation being the provision of at least 4 teams in total in the Two Day competition. The successful One Day Limited Over competition will continue which gives players another option to enjoy playing cricket. The CCCA has expanded the Centre of Excellence

and coaching structures for representative teams and clubs to provide high quality coaching at all levels. Lowe to represent Australia raig Lowe has recently been selected to represent Australia in the Australian Men’s Volleyball Team at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

The selection followed the announcement by the Central Coast Regional Council Organisation of Councils that Lowe would be the recipient of the Sporting and Cultural Sponsorship grant. “I am excited to have

been selected to represent Australia,” said Lowe. “I have been told The World University Games is the 2nd largest sporting event in the world.” Lowe is currently living in Canada, where he is about to commence his second season with Brandon University Bobcats. “I now play in the highest volleyball league in Canada and play at semiprofessional volleyball level (unpaid). “I play in the Canada West CIS Volleyball League.” Lowe said.

Gosford Golf Club breaks 20 year drought C by Jan Martin

celebration dinner was held on Sunday July 31 at the Gosford Golf Club in honour of the Gosford Golf Club Ladies A Grade Pennants team.

The team won this prestigious competition after not having been able to do so for 20 years. Gosford has won the A Grade Pennants in previous years and Di Thomlinson has represented Gosford on three of these occasions.

The 2011 team representing Gosford consisted of Wendy Stapleton (Captain), Sheena Asken, Michelle McGrath, Kay Adams, Helen Potter, Lyn Bates, Fay Bailey, Di Thomlinson, Rosalie Dyer, Debbie Grinham & Jan Fitzgerald. This has been the strongest representation for the club for the last 20 years and the Team and Club Members are delighted with the results.

Point Clare does well in zone

oint Clare Public School sent a team of 52 students to the Zone Athletics carnival Friday August 5.

“It was wonderful to see all students participating with enthusiasm and conducting themselves in an exemplary manner,” said coordinator Rachel Andrew. The sun was shining and there were plenty of smiling faces, even as children were running down the track. “Point Clare performed very well against the six other schools in our zone, though our ﬁnal standing will not be revealed until

later in the week,” Andrew continued. Those students who placed 1st or 2nd in their events will now be moving on to compete at the Sydney North Regional Carnival later in the term. “Huge thanks must go out to Jenny and the fabulous helpers in the canteen, who not only organised the stall at the zone, but also managed to get the lunches done back at school as well.” “Also, thanks to Mrs Allan for giving up her day off to be the team manager.” “Congratulations to everyone who competed,” Andrew ﬁnished.

Mariners celebrate building commencement

entral Coast M a r i n e r s welcomed a host of national and local dignitaries and guests to an event held on July 28 to celebrate the commencement of work on the clubs’ Centre of Excellence in Tuggerah.

Led by Minister for Sport, the Honourable Senator Mark Arbib, the event involved a ceremonial breaking of the ground at what will soon be the clubs’ state-of-the-art training and recovery base. A number of other dignitaries were also present, including Central Coast Mariners Chairman, Mr Peter Turnbull, Federal Member for the seat of Dobell, Mr Craig Thomson, Mayor of Wyong Shire Council, Mr Doug Eaton, and Managing Director of North Construction, Mr Tim Cornish. While Stage One of construction on the site began in early July, the event nevertheless proved a resounding success with Senator Arbib noting the “powerful force” sport can have within the Central Coast region. “The best thing about this facility is that it’s not just going to be a facility for the Mariners, it’s going to be a facility for the people of the Central Coast,” Senator Arbib said. “The thing I love about the Mariners most, and the thing they are renowned for is the way since their inception that they have embraced their local community. “The Mariners, I think more than any other club in the A-League, has gone into the community and has spent countless hours and time partnering with organisations to ensure that everyone gets the chance to play football,” he said. “Sport is such a powerful social force. “The Mariners are using it

on the Central Coast and it’s inspired people here to play sport and get involved.” Mariners Chairman Turnbull paid tribute to one of the club’s founding shareholders, Mr David King, before elaborating on the beneﬁts the complex will afford not only the Mariners, but also all young, ambitious Australian footballers. “Today is a day that we’ve been waiting so long to happen, it’s a day that many people thought might not arrive, but it has arrived,” Turnbull said. “I’d like to pay tribute to one of our founding shareholders, Mr David King, who had the vision that the Central Coast could support a national sporting

team, and took the great leap when not many other people around the country did do. “This is part of the Mariners vision to be the club of choice in Australia,

where we’ll be providing our opportunities and facilities for the best use of the region and also the best use in the country,” Turnbull noted. “We expect that any talented footballer will be aspiring to play for the Central Coast Mariners because we’ll have the best facilities, we’ll have the best coaching, and we’ll have the best development pathway of any club in the country”. Development of Stage One of the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence includes the construction of a ten court 5-a-side Soccer Centre, an Aquatic and Hydrotherapy Centre, a tournament sized football field, an Amenities Block, as well as associated infrastructure. All these facilities will be made available for public use. When fully finished, the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence will feature two full-size football field and a grandstand for up to 3,000 fans, a function, event and reception centre for club and community use, up to ten all-weather sports courts for 5-a-side soccer and other sports use, a heated aquatic and hydrotherapy centre for community use, a gym and fitness centre for community use, facilities for delivering educational learning programs, a sports medicine centre, and amenities and car parking facilities and an upgrade to the Wyong Road Roundabout.

oy Woy Lions Junior Rugby Union Club had a very successful representative season with 24 boys chosen for the Central Coast Junior Rugby teams, to play in both Country and State Championships.

v e r g l a d e s C o u n t r y Club at Woy Woy will be hosting the Wheelchair Sports NSW State Championships from August 30 to September 3.

This event is held annually and offers Wheelchair Sports (WS) NSW bowling

members an opportunity to compete against each other to ﬁnd the Open Pairs and Singles champions. As a result of the championships, 1 female and 1 male bowler will be selected to represent Wheelchair Sports NSW at the 2012 Bowls Australia, Australian Open Athletes with a Disability Tournament. This event is also part

of the selection criteria for those bowlers who wish to be considered for selection in the WS NSW State Team that will contest the 2012 Wheelchair Sports Australia National Championships. “Volunteers to help make the carnival a success are welcome,” said Everglades Bowls Club Committee member Peter Arnold.

“We need people to push the chairs and assist in many ways.” “This is a great opportunity to meet the players and enjoy the atmosphere of the carnival, so if you would like to help please contact Peter Arnold, phone 4341 5379 or e-mail peterkingsley@ bigpond.com,” he said.

This is as well as an unprecedented 10 players from the club chosen in the U12’s. “The club is in a strong position for the future with so many representative players coming through,” said the club media ofﬁcer Billy Mac. The teams played at various locations throughout NSW including Tamworth, Orange, Camden and Lismore depending on the age group. “All the boys had a

great experience at both championship tournaments and enjoyed their time in camp and on tour,” said Mac. After the Country Championships, 7 players were chosen across all eligible age groups to play for NSW Country. Players from Woy Woy included: U18s - Tyrone Fleming, Patrick Hines U16s - Damien Fleming U15s - Lapana Vitale U14s - William Jones, Colin McAlpine, Joshua Thorndyke Damien Fleming is also in the “Rising Gold” team, which is run by the Australian Rugby Union for junior Wallabies. Lions are coming 2nd on the Club Championship ladder and all teams are on target to make the semi ﬁnals starting at the end of the month.

Flippence on Sunday stepped up from 3rd to skip the team, with Peter Freestone moving from 2nd to 3rd and Col Bray joined the team to play at 2nd slot while Nathan Molloy remained as lead. Zone 15 sent a strong side of six teams to Port Macquarie and got away to a good start on Saturday morning in Round 1, by posting a 125-99 victory on the Master Board over Zone

On an adjacent green, Zone 2 (Newcastle) defeated Zone 6 (Hunter/Manning) 133-116, then all teams adjourned to the club house for an excellent ďŹ sh and salad lunch before returning to the greens for the 1.15pm start to the Round 2 afternoon games. In Round 2, Zone 15 lined up against defending trophy holders Zone 2 (Newcastle) in an attempt to prevent them winning three Pat Gearys in a row, but they were too strong and they won by 31 shots on the Master Board, despite the teams of John Roberts (lost by 11 shots) and Danny McNeilly (lost by 16 shots) leading early and Aron Sherriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team leading until end 17, when they were overtaken to lose by 4 shots plus losses by Tony Shoebridge (8 shots) and Dave Neilson (1 shot) leaving Darren Morrison to prevent a Zone 2 clean

The scene was now set for the last round on Sunday morning at 9am and Zone 15â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only hope to win the trophy was for Zone 14 to prevail over Zone 2, and to post a big margin over Zone 6. (Lee) and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those boys are playing amazing bowls for their ageâ&#x20AC;? (Zac, Harley and Lee). Rex Johnson in his Representative days was nicknamed â&#x20AC;&#x153;The conversion Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and had to call on that skill to try to get his team out of trouble on many ends but when you are trailing 31-4 at end 17 the task was almost impossible, but to his credit Rex never lost his composure and was gracious in defeat. The ďŹ nal result was a win to Zone 15 for a total of 139 shots on the Master

Board while Zone 6 posted 113 shots, however on the adjacent green Zone 2 made it three wins out of three rounds to take home the Pat Geary Memorial Trophy, which was once again presented to Zone 2 President John Smith by Patâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s widow Gwen. At the Closing Ceremony special mention was made of the tremendous effort put in by Bowls Co-ordinator Charlie Buchanan to make the event such a success and to the volunteers of Port Macquarie City Bowling Club who put on a ďŹ rst-class meal of roast beef, chicken, vegetables and salad which the hungry bowlers devoured before climbing into their transport for the trip back home.

Mariners’ stars line up for young Socceroos at World Cup entral Coast Mariners stars Bernie Ibini-Isei and Mustafa Amini were selected for the starting line up for the Socceroos in place of Ben Kantarovski and Dimitrios Petratos in the clash against Spain on August 7.

The match was a devastating loss for the Socceroos, with Spain opening the scoring as early as the 1st minute of the match. Sergio Canales set up Sergi Roberto at the top of the box and Roberto made no mistake as he placed his shot beyond the reach of Birighitti. Spain was then able to extend their score in the 6th minute, when Birighitti was unable to deny Vazquez. Daniel Pacheco played a through ball behind the defence and Vazquez ﬁred his shot home for his ﬁrst and Spain’s second goal of

the match. Vazquez doubled his tally in the 13th minute having timed his run to perfection as he collected a defence splitting pass before rounding Birighitti and tapping the ball home. Vazquez completed his hat trick ﬁve minutes later when he headed home from a corner. Bulut managed to pull a goal back for the Qantas Young Socceroos in the 27th minute when he intercepted the ball from a Spanish defender before cutting inside goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco to slot the ball into the empty net. Spain took their 4 goal lead back shortly after. Trent Sainsbury was deemed to have fouled Vazquez in the penalty box and referee had no choice but to point to the spot and showed Sainsbury a yellow card. Canales made no mistake from the spot to send Birighitti the wrong way and put Spain 5-1 up before

An obviously disappointed Jan Versleijen made his thoughts on the match clear at the postmatch media conference. “Six minutes and it’s already 2-0, thirteen minutes it’s 3-0 and eighteen minutes it’s 4-0.

“Then you have to play against Spain which is one of the better teams in this World Cup, who are very good at possessing the ball, moving the ball around, a lot of technical skills. “After six minutes you can almost say the game is gone,” said Versleijen. “It is very obvious that, in the ﬁrst 15 minutes of this game, especially in the backline, we had some players that were not at a World Cup level. “And if you’re not concentrating and not in the game then against good opposition like Spain you will be penalised straight away. “The thing is, when you have to play a third game against one of the better teams in this World Cup and you know you have to win this game, you have to also take some risks. “But Spain took very good advantage of the risk that we had to take in order to put more pressure on them. When asked about what he thought of the quality of Spain and their chances in

Lake Haven resident Perry Wall received $1000 to attend the UCI BMX World Championships held in Denmark from July 28-31. Perry was selected for the team after winning the over-50 men’s race at the National Championships. Cassidy Turner of Hamlyn Terrace and Tumbi Umbi’s Mackenzie Harris have both been awarded $500 each to participate in the School Sports Australia Swimming and Diving Championships held in Melbourne from 30 July 2011. Cassidy is the only athlete with a disability from the Central Coast to be selected for the team. Both girls earned their

place after outstanding performances at regional and state events. Craig Lowe of Avoca Beach has been awarded $1000 and will represent Australia in Indoor Volleyball at the World University Summer Games to be held in China from 11 August 2011. His selection for this team is based on his performances in previous international competition, including tours with the Australian Institute of Sport to Europe since 2008, as well as his involvement in training camps and competitions as part of the National Junior Men’s Volleyball Program since 2007. A joint initiative of Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils, CCROC provides sponsorship to residents who have been selected by a national, state or regional body to participate in a recognised sporting or cultural event. In return for sponsorship, the recipients promote the Central Coast in the local, interstate and international arenas.

t Edwards Catholic College are due to play Patrician Brothers Blacktown on August 10 as a part of the Bill Turner Cup, which is a national football (soccer) knockout t o u r n a m e n t featuring almost 600 schools.

The College won in Central Coast zone, and won their first final series game 2-1 against Warners Bay on July 29. They are now in the top 16, where a win will put them in the quarter final, where they will likely travel as far as Lismore. Their results in the Bill Turner Cup have been as follows:

Mariners partner new sponsors

entral Coast Mariners have agreed to an ofﬁcial partnership with Central Coast Radio for the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season.

This follows on from an earlier arrangement put in place with Central Coast Grandstand tying the Coast’s premier sports radio network with the Coast’s premier sports newspaper and the Coast’s most popular sporting team to form a major marketing partnership for sport on the Coast. Incorporating 2GO (107.7FM) and SEA FM (101.3FM), Central Coast Radio were an ofﬁcial partner of the Mariners for the clubs’ inaugural Hyundai A-League campaign in

2005/06. Central Coast Radio general manager Mr Paul Wrigley said the company is delighted to link with the Yellow and Navy again heading into an exciting phase in the club’s development. “Both 2GO and SEA FM are extremely pleased and proud to be partnering with the Central Coast Mariners for the forthcoming season,” he said. “The Mariners are an integral part of the community and mirror our values, so we look forward to a successful year ahead both on and off the ﬁeld.” Central Coast Mariners CEO Mr John McKay echoed Wrigley’s sentiments. “2GO and SEA FM were amongst the ﬁrst to partner the Mariners when the Club was formed and we

had some great success together back in those early seasons of the competition which we are intent on surpassing in season seven of the Hyundai A-League,” he said. With the partnership effective immediately, McKay added that the alliance would aid the Mariners 2011/12 Membership campaign which ramps up this weekend. “It’s great to be back on board with Central Coast Radio, and we are already off and running starting with a major Membership drive for the upcoming season this weekend,” he said. entral Coast Mariners captain and fan favourite, Alex Wilkinson, believes Australian footballers will increasingly look to China as an avenue to further their careers, with big bucks being offered by the league’s emerging clubs.

Having returned to training with his Mariners teammates on Monday following a loan spell with Jiangsu Sainty in the Chinese Super League (CSL), Wilkinson labelled the ﬁnancial opportunities in the nation akin to those available in Europe. “Obviously, the money that the presidents and the clubs can splash around is huge, but that’s because the country (China) has over a billion people in it,” Wilkinson said.

“I think that is the last time you will see players going on loan there, because it’s going to be difficult with the A-League starting and finishing later. “But I think you are going to see a lot more players transferring there – I think it’s sort of the new Europe. “Clubs are allowed an extra Asian player in their squads over there, so many of the teams are looking to take advantage of using Aussie players,” he said. While the 26-year-old Mariners stalwart said the financial might of many Chinese franchises far outweighed the cash on offer from Australian clubs, he believes that the Hyundai A-League more than matches the CSL on the pitch. Indeed, Wilkinson’s recent experience in the CSL augurs well for the Yellow and Navy’s AFC Champions League campaign in 2012, with the club almost certain

to face Chinese opposition in the group stage. “The top half of the Chinese league has got some very good teams, but I think the A-League’s on par if not stronger than most of those top teams – we’re going along pretty nicely,” he said. Just two days back into training with the Mariners in the lead up to the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season, Wilkinson added that some of the clubs’ new additions had already impressed him; however, the fact management had kept the bulk of last years’ successful side together is what excites him the most. “Obviously we’ve brought in a bit of quality and a number of faces who are going to add a lot of things to the team,” he said. “But we’ve kept the core of the squad together which has been the main thing; so far, so good.”

orthern Tigers FC left it late in their last derby game against soon to be defunct Central Coast FC at a sunny Mills Park, Asquith on Sunday afternoon - only scoring in the 77th minute, and then again 5 minutes later before the Coast grabbed a consolation goal.

Both teams were intent of making a game of it, but that does not mean it was pretty. The referee didn’t help with interruptions for what

were niggly incidents between players who know each other well. Last season’s Grand Final hat-trick holder Max Glanville looked lively in one of his rare appearances this season, due, I believe, to overseas travel. In the 20th minute, he made a surging run down the left but just as he was about to shoot from 25m, the ball took a ‘bobble’ on the pitch and it sailed high over the bar. Five minutes later, it was the Coast with a chance as a corner was taken from the right and Grant Maundrell

got a strong header on it, goalward, only to see Matt Collins head it off the line. As the half drew toward conclusion, one shot went wide for the Coast, and Glanville hit one over. It looked like it was heading for a scoreless draw at this rate. Glanville’s guile gave the Coast defence a torrid time after the break, with a shot from an acute angle on the right cutting back across goal, and then after 12 minutes had elapsed, making a run on goal from the left, he slipped the ball to Collins, whose shot from

in front of goal was blocked, and the ball was pushed wide to the right to Brendan Salemah, who hesitated in burying it and his shot was blocked by a fast moving defender. This was the best chance of the game to that point. Michael Simmonds put pressure on for the Coast after a series of shots on goal were blocked in the 64th minute, but it rebounded to the keeper. Two minutes later, Glanville’s cross from the right was too strong for his team-mate running through and the header skewed wide

on the left. Pinball action in the Coast’s penalty area led to substitute Adam Hett slamming the ball into the underside of the net at the 77th minute. Leaving it late, but now 1-0 Tigers substitute Daniel Clifford also scored, in the 82nd minute to give the home side a buffer. 2-0 A consolation to the never-say-die Coast, when just before the end of regulation time Darren Cooper forced home a shot. 2-1 Northern Tiger’s season

enalties were the order of the day at Lily Homes Stadium, but they were shared equally between Hills Brumbies and Central Coast as the two sides fought out a 1-1 draw.

Hills took the lead through Dragan Savic just after the half hour, for his tenth goal of the season. But Paul McGinley with just four minutes left on the clock, equalised from the spot for Central Coast.

Despite the point, Fraser Park’s win at Spirit confirms that Hills will finish bottom for the season. Central Coast visit Campbelltown this coming Sunday to take on third place Macarthur Rams. Their final match of the season, and the last match for the club following Central Coast Football’s decision to discontinue with senior teams in the NSW Football competitions, will be played at Pluim Park on Friday 19 August against Granville Rage commencing at 8.30pm.

After a quarter of a century, the Central Coast will not be represented in the top competition in New South Wales and a proud football history will come to an end. Jasmine is a great “copy book” tackler and a quick and elusive runner with the ball. “I have enjoyed watching her play every time I had the chance. “Apart from being a good footy player, she is polite, intelligent and respectful person, deﬁnitely one of my favourite players in the club,” said Woy Woy Junior Rugby League Football Club president Tim McParlane.

illarney District have picked up their biggest scalp of the season, defeating Umina 2-1 at EDSDACC North in Round 18 of the 2011 CountryNet Premier League football competition.

It was just the second loss for Umina in 16 matches and continues Killarney’s impressive return to the Premier League which sees them move up to equal fourth position on the ladder. Both of Killarney’s goals came in the first half through Tim Knight (21st minute) and Brent Rogers (32nd minute) with Matt Goodwin giving Umina some hope with a goal 10 minutes left to play. Umina remain in first place but only with a slender goal difference over East Gosford. A goal deep into injury time by substitute Daniel Edwards allowed Wyoming to snatch a lucky 2-2 draw against Berkeley Vale in their match at Alan Davidson Park. Berkeley Vale dominated for much of the match after Scott Imberger had given them a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Edwards’ introduction to the field in the 77th minute had an immediate effect when he headed home the first of his two goals just four minutes later. Berkeley Vale then looked to have sealed the win when Brian Beveridge converted a penalty with just three minutes remaining before Edwards’ dramatic late equaliser. Berkeley Vale and Killarney District meet next Wednesday night at Pluim

Park in a match that will have a major say in the final composition of the top four. East Gosford joined Umina at the top of the competition table after a Neil Woodcock double gave them a 2-0 win over Wyong at Hylton Moore Park. This loss continued Wyong’s miserable season that has seen them without a win since their amazing 11-2 win over Kincumber in the opening game of the season. The Entrance bounced back from their midweek 6-1 loss to Berkeley Vale, defeating Kincumber 3-2 at Pat Morley Oval. After a scoreless first half The Entrance skipped away to a 3-0 lead through Adam Woodbine (2) and an own goal. Kincumber rallied late in the match with goals to Sean Tunnell and Jake Elder. The win moved The Entrance up to sixth place with just one match to play while ninth-placed Kincumber will clash with Wyong next Sunday in a match which could decide the wooden spoon. In the final match Budgewoi kept their very slim hopes of reaching the top alive with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Kanwal at Budgewoi Football Club. Matt Crompton (2) and Jai Kelly scored for Budgewoi and Damien Miller and Mitchell Starkey for Kanwal. The win took Budgewoi up to seventh place and they’ll need to win both of their remaining matches and hope that Wyoming and Killarney both lose their last two games.

osford WPL team secured minor premiership with a convincing away win over second placed Doyalson on Sunday July 31 and put more distance between the two with an away win against Tuggerah last Sunday.

The Gosford squad has an enviable record of attaining 39 points from 13 games, having conceded just three goals, and scoring seventy one. This, so far, is a better season for the Dragons than their success during the 2010 campaign. Unstoppable is not a word I would use as there are flaws in any side but exploiting them requires some discipline from opponents and throughout this season there have been some glimpses of that. The question now is: can Gosford get to the Grand Final and secure a win? Team stalwart and striker, Ange Beattie, is keen to continue this success into the finals and on to the Champion of Champions where she is eager to secure a second medal. Grandstand will follow the Dragons campaign and report on their progress. For its part, Doyalson really needed to tuck away a win, or at the very least a draw, against the league leaders from their home game advantage and whilst playing valiantly found it difficult to break down the Gosford defence. A week later Doyalson regained some lost confidence by securing an away win over Wyoming. The WPL ladder has hardly changed team positions over the past seven or eight rounds and with current teams/results becoming a tad predictable, the division appears to be losing its competitive edge. Having said that, The Entrance have gained valuable points of late and while still languishing second from bottom on ten points, one can surely say they gave it a go after

promotion from last year’s first grade. Their 5-1 win over Avoca gave them confidence to think seriously of WPL next season. Avoca took on Tuggerah at Pluim Park last Tuesday night and came away with their first win of the season in WPL. The quick recovery from a severe shoulder injury saw Biddy Holstein positioned up front on the left of the park, servicing Avoca striker

Avoca now have four points from thirteen outings, losing eleven of them, but the team has found new self belief after the win against Tuggerah. Having said that, they must surely realise that

competing at this level requires a lot more than they have been able to give, and without a feeder team of under 18s, this will prove challenging for future aspirations. Talking of Under 18s, both Kincumber and Umina 18As have shown promise, and the Umina girls, age wise, will be looking to play all age in the 2012 season. They could well be WPL contenders.

Round 15- First Grade Results, July 30 o s f o r d cemented their second spot on the competition ladder with a convincing 49 points to 11 win over Terrigal at The Haven Oval yesterday.

After an evenly fought struggle in the opening quarter of the game, Gosford took more and more control the further the game went on to record a very good win. The opening stages of the match were quite intense. Gosford had much of the possession and were able to go on the go forward on many occasions. But good Terrigal defence kept them out for quite a while. The only scoring in the early stages was a penalty goal to both sides, to make the score 3 points all at the 10 minute mark. Gosford scored the ﬁrst try of the match when winger Adam Clift made a strong run down the sideline, before passing the ball to centre Josh McGlynn who

and 90 metres on two separate occasions to score spectacular tries. These were heartbreaking for the home side. These tries capped off a great game by Adam Clift who was always strong and quick in very soft conditions. This was a pleasing win for the Gosford side and demonstrated that they are in good form. Terrigal would be most disappointed with the result, and with Ourimbah winning elsewhere, the loss by Terrigal drops them out of the Top Four. crossed for a good try close to the touchline. into the lead by 17 points to 6 and that remained the score at halftime. Gosford did deserve that lead at the break, but it was score which did see both teams still having a chance of victory. Best for Gosford at this stage were forwards Andrew Moseley and Hugo Pike who were both everywhere in attack and defence, and they were well supported by prop Brad Porter and centre Josh McGlynn. Terrigal had several good players and players such as Damien Woods, Dennis Raft, Dave Crawford and Ryan Metcalfe were in the thick of the action for the whole half. Gosford almost conﬁrmed their victory very early in the second half. A second try to centre Josh McGlynn within 5 minutes of the start of half, as well as another penalty goal to Tim Hill, had jumped Gosford to a very handy 25 points to 6 lead at the ten minute mark of the second half. This remained the score for quite awhile. Both teams gave it their all at this stage, and both teams had chances to post further points. However, it was Gosford who scored next. Fullback Dave Von Kotze made an individual run to race 30 metres to score to make the score 30-6. Gosford dominated the ﬁnal stages of the match. They played good team rugby and were able to dominate most the set pieces especially the scrum where the Gosford pack had the Terrigal scrum on the back foot. However, Terrigal never gave up. In fact, they made several goods attacking raids deep into the Gosford half but on two occasions Gosford winger Adam Clift took intercepts to race 55 metres

Avoca Beach also showed they are in excellent form when they steamrolled Northlakes at Heazlett Park by 76 points to 7. It was all Avoca Beach from start to ﬁnish, and Northlakes never had a chance. The win keeps Avoca Beach at the top of the ladder, and certainly stamps them as one of the teams to beat this year. he Match of the Day this Saturday is between Kariong and Gosford at Kariong Oval.

This clash between the second and third placed teams is crucial, and it will also be an indicator for the semi-finals, where these two teams are sure to meet. Kariong are at home and that is a real advantage. There is nothing between these two teams so home ground advantage may be the only difference. If Gosford win this game, they will cement second spot and a certain Major Semi-final position and they could even take the Minor Premiership. If Kariong win, they may be able to overtake Gosford on the ladder and take second spot. But besides all these situations, it is a game that will give the winner huge confidence going into the playoffs.

Both teams will give it their all and will also like to get through the game without any serious injuries. Another exciting game will be the clash at The Haven Oval between Terrigal and Warnervale. Terrigal must win if they are to have any chance of getting back into the Top Four. They must also hope for some other upsets, but a win on Saturday is essential. Warnervale cannot make the semi-ﬁnals, but they have caused every opposition problems all year. This is the last game of the season for Warnervale, and they will be very keen to ﬁnish on a high note. They have had a wonderful season under new coach Gary Head and with such a young team, they will only be stronger next year after the very good rugby they put on display this year. This will be a very tight

game that both teams have a real chance of winning. Ourimbah are at home to Woy Woy at Ourimbah Rugby Park. Ourimbah know they have a lot to play for – one slip up, and they could lose that semi-final spot that they had gained in recent weeks. Ourimbah will go into this game as favourites. They have been playing well and they are at home, and they have a lot to play for. Woy Woy have the ability to cause an upset, but they will have to be on their game for the full 80 minutes. The final game sees Northlakes at home to The Entrance at Slade Park. These two neighbouring clubs will be at each other for the whole game, but with Northlakes at home and with their very good backline, they should have too much firepower for the visitors.

Wamberal Winter Carnival tests bowler’s versatility

he aptly named Wamberal Winter Carnival “Versatility” Pairs fully tested the player’s skill with three different disciplines of Pairs (2, 4, 2. / 3 bowl / 2, 2, 2, 2.) played each day.

Both days were played as separate events with the best performed teams over three games of 13 ends receiving the daily prize money. As an added feature, those teams that played both days, and there were twenty in total, a best performed winner over the six games was also declared.

Both days attracted full houses and winter sunshine blessed Saturday’s play whilst threatening skies kept everyone guessing throughout the play on the Sunday. Tournament Director Jim McCreadie was delighted to see the prize money evenly spread amongst the players and acknowledged the long term sponsorship of Creighton Funeral Services who are great supporters of bowls on the Central Coast. even surfers from the Ocean Beach Malibu Club competed at the 21st annual Mal de Mer Longriders Mal Muster held at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills over August 5, 6, and 7, with six members progressing through to the ﬁnals on

Sunday August 14. Brent Olsson, the only member not to reach the finals, still came home a very happy man, winning one of three brand new Malibu surfboards being raffled. Richie McClelland was the standout performer for the club, winning the over 50s title with a great display of tube riding in the four to six feet waves on offer. Mark Williams placed sixth in the same final

after some great surfing throughout the contest, but was unable to find the right waves to challenge Richie in the final. Angela Smith placed fourth in the ladies division while Bryce Williams also came fourth in the juniors. In the mystery final, Craig Coulton managed third place with Chris Irwin placing fifth. A very enjoyable weekend of surfing and partying was had by all.

Fishing Report he last few weeks have seen a lot of rain and big swells, making the ﬁshing on the coast hard for the local ﬁsherman to get out and catch a feed.

All the rain has added a lot of freshwater to the estuary system, but when the swells started to fall, the outside guys have had exceptional ﬁshing. The estuaries on the coast have been slow due to the amount of fresh still in the system, oyster farmers have been ﬁnding it hard to harvest and many reports from some of the locals are saying the estuary is quiet. For the more experienced anglers, the fresh hasn’t stopped them, and the previous interclub staged last week saw some nice bream up to a kg weighed in. Bream have been caught with good size pilchard pieces marinated in tuna oil and chicken gut with aniseed. The big Whiting have found their way into the system, with worms the main bait, catching a lot of

thumpers. Some anglers have found blood worms have been scarce, but the tube worm brigade have been able to get their worms in abundance and have been taking some nice bags of whiting home. Jewfish have been caught in reasonable numbers after the rain, and one angler at the Lions Park boat ramp was seen cleaning couple of nice size Jewfish which were taken from flint and steel. One fish topped the scales at 17kg, whilst the second was only a few kgs smaller. The rip in the Brisbane Waters has still been turning up soapies fishing the deep water and has been successful for a lot of anglers as well as myself. The Blackfish anglers haven’t had too much to cheer about due to the fresh, but if the weather starts to improve I think the guys will be back amongst them. It seems that green weed has made a comeback and everyone is happy. One fish that has come on in numbers has been the Mullet.

It seems every time we get the big rains, these fish appear. Watching the kids down the local wharf catching them with bread is a sight to be seen as the Mullet seems to put a great fight once hooked. Outside fishing seems to be going off, with bags of Flathead, Snapper, Leather Jacket, Jewfish and Kingfish all being taken in good numbers, one Kingfish, which was weighed in for a fishing club record, went 16.778 on the scales. The inter-club challenge saw many anglers who fished were rewarded with good catches for this time of the year. Some of our local charter boats have been putting their customers onto some great fishing as well as reports from the guys that there are plenty of fish on the bite, so if you’re keen to get out there amongst the fish, look up one of our many charter boats around the coast. All the guys are switched on and give great service to their customers.

Bremer, who supplies all of the shell garages and some of the biggest chain tackle shops like BCF with numerous smaller shops are now in the strong hold of Tweed Baits. First thing Tweed Baits have done with their Central Coast branch is to close the doors to the public and tackle shops, who rely on being able to go to the wholesaler direct to keep their shops topped up. Some tackle shop owners have met to discuss this new problem that has now arisen

fearing they will not be able to meet demands of their customers with the start of the ﬁshing season soon to start taking off as the warmer weather approches. The main attraction was the new boat that was donated by the guys from Bait’n’Boats at Woy Woy, the giant ﬁshing lures turned into trophies for the kids was so kindly donated by the boys too. Kids started off with a little

friendly fishing competition, where everything was measured, even all the little fish counted as it was for the most centimetres caught. Unfortunately, the fish weren’t on the bite because of the rain, but for those who did catch a few made for some fun for all. A little trophy for overall length was awarded which Ezra Longney won. Canoe Club holds awards night he committee of the Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club held an end of Regatta Season Dinner at the Bay View Hotel Woy Woy on June 18.

The event was the 1st awards night by the club, with the venue being the Bay View Hotel Woy Woy. The dinner was attended by about 45 people, 30 members and 15 guests. The awards consisted of 3 categories, Club Person of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Major helpers of the Year, Volunteers, and life membership. With Life Membership

Large surf changes longboarding location

ue to the large surf, the Ocean Beach Malibu Club was forced to move their July contest further up the beach to ‘Chongies’, a break just north of the Ocean Beach Surf Club.

It had been many years since a contest was held at this location as the break, up until a few months ago, had not worked properly since 1997.

With a 9.30am low tide, it was decided to delay the start until the turn of the tide, which was the correct decision, as the surf improved dramatically on the incoming tide. A gale force WNW wind made things a little uncomfortable and very cold, but made for some excellent waves. Round 1 winners included Kai Ellice-Flint, Hayden Emery, Bryce Williams, Marty Skewes, Scott Arena and Matt Sing.

Hayden Emery continued his winning form to take out the 1sts from Kai Ellice-Flint and Marty Skewes. The 2nds saw Richie McClelland win from Mark Williams and Peter Wellington while Brent Thoroughgood was victorious in the 3rds over Wayne Medcalf and Daniel Ambler. Shane Muldowney won the 4ths from Craig Coulton and John Payne and in the ﬁnal heat of the day, the rapidly improving Tom

Payne placed ﬁrst, ahead of Mark Rylands and Ty Wilson. Kai Ellice-Flint will be representing the OBMC at the Australian Long Board Titles being held in the Port Macquarie region from August 14 to 20, taking on the best junior surfers Australia has to offer. The next Ocean Beach Malibu Club contest is scheduled for Sunday, 14th August.

Pemberton and Maureen Thompson made it through to the last 16 in the recent effort at Champion of Club Champion Pairs playoff at Taren Point. They then teamed up with Jan Smith to win the Club Championship Triples the following week. The team of Shirley Brabbin, Marilyn Worrall and Claire Hoban made it a very exciting final. Sonia Geddes has been trying to win the Club Minor Singles for a while now and on August 2, she won in a nail biting game against Betty Simpson. This game see sawed all through the game but Sonia held on to win 32 – 26. October 30 will be the day for raising money to help in Cancer Research. “Come along and join in a game of bowls - either barefoot or traditional, try your luck in the raffles, get the kids to join in and have a family picnic,” said publicity officer Helen Stevenson. “There will be a sausage sizzle and other activities so come along and help to make this day a success. “Each year, the Munmorah Ladies play a game of bowls against the Halekulani Ladies,” she said. “It is the Kelly Shield and is for grade 4 players plus an Official team from each Club. “Well, this year the less said about it the better. “Congratulations to the Halekulani Ladies, who thoroughly deserved their win.”
