and a prodigy of Mariners goalkeeper coach, John Crawley, Mathew Ryan was originally drafted into the club’s National Youth League squad as a 17-yearold in 2009. After earning a senior contract in 2010, a season ending injury to Jess Vanstrattan handed the precociously talented custodian his chance between the sticks early in Hyundai A-League season six – and Ryan took full advantage. 31 games and 14 clean sheets later the confident shot-stopper was feted as NAB Young Footballer of the Year for the 2010/2011 season. Ryan was also awarded the Joe Marston Medal for his stunning display in the 2010/11 Hyundai A-League Grand Final. A knee injury cruelled Ryan’s chances of a place in the Qantas Young Socceroos squad for the 2011 FIFA U20 World Cup held in Colombia, however having now returned to full fitness, Ryan is set for another stellar year at club level.

Coasties perform at State Baseball Country Championships U’12s he Central Coast U12 Baseball Team came up just short of winning the NSW Country Championships.
T
After winning 5 of their 6 games over the weekend, they tied with Newcastle for the top spot but on count back with runs for against they fell 2 runs short and had to settle with runners up. Coach Russell Pearce expressed how proud he was of the team and that all the players should be proud of the way they played over the whole weekend displaying great sportsmanship and team spirit. This places the team in a good position to hone their skills in the upcoming State Cup competition and
we look forward to Country Championships next year.
U’14s a t u r d a y (September 17) was a hard day for the Coasties U14s, winning only one game against Illawarra Gold 12 – 7 and being defeated by Illawarra Blue 6 – 3 and Newcastle 13 – 3.
S
Sunday was an entirely different day, with Illawarra Blue and Central Coast playing off for the right to play Newcastle (1st placed after round robin) in the final. Scores were locked at four all after the first dig and then Illawarra scored one in the second.
The score remained 5 -4 for the next three digs but in the top of the last dig Central Coast unleashed a batting onslaught and knocked in three runs from four consecutive hits. Central Coast took the field and closed out the next three batters to win the right to the final 8 -5. Newcastle was too strong in the final and run out winners of the Country championship. Seven players from the Central Coast were selected in the train on squad for next year’s Australian Championship to be held in Perth (Jake Amos, Nicholas Anderson-Vine, Nickolas Hickson, Joshua Isaac, Michael Leard, Sam McKenna and Brock Ridgewell).
Race meeting attracts tremendous support
by James Heddo
osford’s annual C h r i s t m a s party picnic race day scheduled for Saturday December 17 has already attracted tremendous local support, with over 1,000 pre booked dining packages already sold.
G
“The implementation of this Saturday racing event into our annual racing calendar only confirms our strong belief that the Central Coast Community is crying out for a more regular program of meetings outside of normal working hours,” enthused Gosford Race Club CEO James Heddo. “As a midweek club, we do not have the same opportunities as clubs who predominantly race outside of normal working hours and the support we have received for our picnic meeting is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when a meeting on the Central Coast is positioned in a time frame when people are more likely to be available to attend.” The Gosford Race Club recently presented its Strategic Direction 2020 document to Racing NSW, with the major component being an application to host a standalone metropolitan status Saturday meeting in late Spring or Summer 2012. The Club could possibly run their four Black Type races on the one day and offer $1 million in total prize money. The other major
component was the desire to host a minimum of 12 Friday twilight meetings to be run between October to April each year and the Club remains hopeful that the approval of the twilight meetings will lead to Gosford being the venue of choice if Racing NSW decides to pursue a second night racing venue. “We are very excited by the prospect of a regular season of Friday twilight meetings, which may lead to night meetings in the future. “We have studied the recent success of the Happy Valley ‘Happy Wednesday’ night meetings in Hong Kong which clearly demonstrate what can be achieved with coordinated and specific marketing and promotion,” stated Heddo. “The interest and support for our annual Picnic meeting
in December justifies the Clubs confidence that the repositioning of our racing through the Summer months will lead to greatly increased on course activity. “We aim to offer not only a fantastic social event but also a premium racing experience for the huge crowds we would attract. “We have a population of over 300,000 people living on the Central Coast and this swells significantly during the holiday season with tourists swarming to the region,” said Heddo. “We have the prospect of attracting vast new audiences to our venue if we can reposition our race meetings as requested and I am confident that the Industry as a whole will benefit from these initiatives,” he said.

The score was 21-16 and saw the duo record their first Bowls Central Coast title. The Entrance lived up to the name of Champion of Champions, with a high standard of bowling and some very tightly contested games. Twenty one teams, who had qualified by winning their respective Club championship pairs title, were divided into two sections to play a sudden death knockout format over two days. The Greens combination of Peter McCarten and Bill Constantine were in good
touch in Section one with wins over Wyong’s Craig Bell (22-7), Davistown’s Luke Rush, (17-16) and Everglades Alan Joss (2212) for a place in the Section final against Munmorah’s Ron Speck. The Munmorah bowlers had a bye in the first round and then two good wins over Woy Woy’s Gilbert McIntyre (29-18) and Norah Head’s Phil Warner (24-18). The Constantine team proved too consistent for Ron Speck to run out winners 25-17 and a berth in the overall final the following week against the winner of Section two. The Bateau Bay pair of Greg Cott and Kevin Trezise proved a formidable duo in Section two, with strong wins over Terrigal’s Brian Williams (26-14), Avoca Beach’s Tony Shoebridge (21-19) and then defeating the highly fancied Halekulani pair of Michael Stead and Pat Reynolds (28-21) in the

Section final. Both finalists in Peter McCarten/Bill Constantine and Greg Cott/Kevin Trezise were in search of their first Central Coast Championship title. The final was played in good spirits in overcast conditions, with Constantine’s team establishing an early lead of 10-3 after six ends. A five to the Trezise pair on the seventh end put them back within reach at 10-8, but they only scored once in the next eight ends to trail 19-9 after 15 ends. To their credit, they fought back to win the next five ends to give themselves an outside chance trailing 1619 with just one end to play. Two shots on the last end gave a much relieved Peter McCarten and Bill Constantine a well deserved victory and the title. Peter and Bill will now play the winners of Northern Metropolitan (Zone 9) in the first round of the State NSW Champion of Club Champions Pairs to be played at Lithgow City B C over the Thursday and Friday of November 17-18.

In the final, the determined Greens side got out to an early lead of 26-4 by end 5 on the Master Scoreboard but by end 10, the Terrigal teams of Bruce Jewell and Miro Perovic had both overtaken the Greens teams of Bill Constantine and Phil Flippence, leaving only Tony Scott’s Greens team still ahead of Terrigal’s David Neilsen’s team 13-5. Tony Scott’s team held on until end 12 when Terrigal won the next 5 ends for 12 shots to go into the lead 19-17 at end 17, but The Greens fought back to regain the lead until Terrigal levelled the scores at 24-24 on end 23 then Terrigal dug deep and won the final two
ends to win their rink 29-24. Over on rinks 10 and 11, The Greens teams of Bill Constantine and Phil Flippence were unable to stop the charge of the Terrigal teams of Bruce Jewell and Miro Perovic who won their rinks 26-18 and 27-14 respectively, giving Terrigal an overall win on the Master Scoreboard of 82-56, in what was a great Mid Week Triples contest with both teams playing top quality bowls. Lilley and Bowl’s President Ray Benton. When accepting the cheque, Melissa said that the $500.00 would go a long way towards the purchase of a much needed wheelchair for the hospital and thanked the members of the Men’s Bowling Club for their errors in bias which resulted in their generous donations.
The deal will see Soccer5s become the club’s front of shirt sponsor for the forthcoming campaign, as well as forming a key component of the Mariners community engagement initiatives. Like the Mariners, the team at Soccer5s is driven to form a lasting and mutually beneficial bond with the Central Coast community, while also seeking to increase their brand awareness and reach on both a national and international scale. will have ten state-of-theart pitches at the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence and will soon be kicking off throughout Australia.
Where to get a game of bowls
Soccer5s are currently preparing to open the first four of ten five-a-side pitches available to the Central Coast community before Christmas, allowing local residents the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of five-a-side football. “There isn’t a town or city in the United Kingdom that isn’t filled with five-a-side football centres, we are over the moon to be launching in the Central Coast,” Soccer5s Operations Director Mr John Smith said at today’s announcement. “Our pitches are outdoor, floodlit and constructed with 5G Astroturf, so the playing surface is equal to perfectly laid grass. “We are going to provide footballers of all ages with the opportunity to play on state-of-the-art facilities.” Mr Smith added that his company hoped the introduction of the Soccer5s format to Australian shores would ultimately aid the standard of football in the country. “We hope that Soccer5s can be the catalyst to
not only increase football participation across Australia, but also raise the bar,” he said. “And we’re delighted to commence this journey on the Central Coast with the Mariners.” Central Coast Mariners Chairman Mr Peter Turnbull added that the club’s partnership with Soccer5s fitted like a hand to a glove. “Soccer5s have a demonstrable need to become top-of-mind and understood in our market, while gradually growing their brand around the nation,” Turnbull said. “It was clear to them how powerful a sponsorship with the Mariners would be in delivering against those key marketing objectives, so the conversation moved quickly to assessing where, rather than if, they could fit in our sponsorship program. “We are very pleased to have another committed partner on board and it is a bonus that Soccer5s is a football-centric brand that plans to promote the sponsorship in a way that
our fans can quickly relate to.” At the announcement, five of the Mariners star players – Michael McGlinchey, Patrick Zwaanswijk, Matt Simon, Adriano Pellegrino and Mathew Ryan – challenged a group of eager, local youngsters representing five local football clubs to a game of five-a-side football on the Mariners training ground, adjacent to where the new Soccer5s courts are being built. Turnbull said the inclusion of the local juniors was symbolic of the concept behind the partnership. “Soccer5s will join us in our ongoing mission to cement football as the top leisure and entertainment option in our region and that’s a win-win situation for both parties.” The announcement also provided the opportunity for the filming of the new Soccer5s advertisement, which will be shown before each Mariners home game at Bluetongue Stadium this season.

Springfield junior dominates state titles ackson Collett has wasted no time in asserting his dominance for the upcoming athletics season after winning Gold in both the 400m and 800m at the recent Combined Catholic Colleges state titles held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre at Homebush in the week preceding September 20.
J
The Central Coast Academy of Sport athlete posted strong times in his two favored events, sprinting away to take out the 400m in a time of 54.07s and running a strong race in the 800m to cross the line in 2:03.5min. The fourteen year old Springfield resident is now back in training as he prepares for the upcoming NSW All Schools titles, also to be held at Homebush in October. “I set a goal at the start of the year to break the two minute mark in the 800m by the end of the season. “My current personal best time for the 800m is 2:01.0min so hopefully I can break the two minute mark at [NSW] All Schools and go one better than last year when I won silver”, said Collett. Several other Central Coast Academy of Sport athletes also performed strongly at their respective

school state titles. Starkey placed third in the 400m with a tight finish bringing him over line in a new personal best time of 52.26s and also finished 4th in the fifteen years triple jump, a great result after taking up the event only three months ago. Cavendar, who is showing great potential as a middle distance runner, gained 4th place in the 1500m and won Silver over his preferred distance of 800m. One of the most promising young sprinters on the coast, Dante Falzarano, also ran well at the state titles. “I came fourth in the 200m and fifth in the 100m. “I would have liked to have improved on my placings, but my times were pretty good, especially the 11.35s that I ran in my 100m heat”, said Falzarano. All of the athletes in the CCAS Athletics Junior
Development squad are now back in training and preparing for the NSW All Schools titles to be held from October 13-16 at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre, Homebush. Unfortunately for Tara Angell, her campaign at the CCC carnival was affected by complications with her calf muscle brought on by shin splints. Angell showed great courage in running the 100m at the CCC titles and gained third place despite running with injury. “I was feeling some pain leading into the 100m race at the state titles, so to get third was great. “After the race, I pulled up really sore and had to withdraw from the 200m which was disappointing, but I’m really looking forward to running at Homebush again in October”, said Angell.

risbane Water S e c o n d a r y College has been the most successful comprehensive school in Rugby League this year, winning 3 state titles and narrowly missing out in the ďŹ nal for a 4th.
Among these wins was the U14s Buckley Shield Champions, with the school making a 32 – 12 win. This was the ďŹ rst time the Shield was won by a Central Coast team since 1975. The U15 side were also the state champions in the NSW All Schools Comp and the Country Cup. Last year, they were
runners up in the Buckley Shield and are undefeated by any Central Coast school in the past 3 years. Both teams travelled far and wide to play in places like Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Dubbo and Sydney to win these comps, staying in motels out of their comfort zones.

Gosford Council Agenda
he executive of Terrigal Trojan Rugby Club and Gosford Council met on Friday September 23 in regards to the prohibited commercial leasing of the community facility on Terrigal Haven Reserve.
T
Under the Draft Gosford LEP 2009, this activity would
be permitted; however, it is not known when the Minister will make the plan. The Council had contributed to the construction costs of the facility, which included a loan to the Rugby Club. This culminated in a lease that commenced on April 26 2006. The club had opened the leased area to public use over extended hours in order to ďŹ nance the loan
payments. The club executive agreed to scale back the unauthorised use of the facility, noting that this would have a ďŹ nancial effect on the club, possibly preventing the club from meeting its obligations to Council. Council agreed to defer principal and interest payable by the Terrigal Trojan Rugby Club Inc until an LEP is made to allow commercial activities.

Anniversary and President day celebrated by Noelene Hopper
voca Beach W o m e n ’ s Bowling Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary as well as President’ Pat’s Day on September 8.
A
The Auditorium was shining with a Gold Theme. There was a ceiling of Gold balloons, raining down gold tinsel with Gold fanned serviettes on the tables. After distinguished guests, NSWWBA Vice President Patricia Reynolds, Pat Frewin Group C & D representative, CCDWBA President Lesley Swales and District Secretary Dianne Elsom were formally introduced, Devonshire Tea was served with delicious scones made in the Club’s
kitchen. There were 90 ladies there to enjoy it. 80 Players then took to the greens to have a game of bowls – although it was overcast, it did not rain and a great time was had by all. When the invited guests had arrived for lunch and the celebrations begun, there were 105 people in attendance. President Pat’s husband Brian, their daughter Sue and her family came to celebrate the day along with friends of the family. There were presidents or their representatives from 22 of our District Women’s Clubs. Guests included Director of Club Limited Winsome Wallace, Mitchell Quinn
from Wyong Leagues Club, Lex Gemmel representing the President of the Men’s Bowling Club and Laurie Barrett, our Greenkeeper. Other guests included Past Presidents, Life members and Robert Hickel who supports our club through sponsorship in memory of his mother, Jean Hickel. Following lunch and the cutting of the beautifully decorated cake, made by Bev Byrne’s daughter Cindy, NSWWBA Merit Badges were presented. The months of planning by the ladies club committee resulted in a most enjoyable day for all those who attended.

ig waves were on offer for the Ocean Beach Malibu Club’s September competition, with contest director Brent Thoroughgood in two minds as to whether to postpone it.
B
Thoroughgood had safety concerns for the ladies and juniors, but after some discussion, it was decided to proceed. The paddle out did
present a problem for a few, but once out the back some good waves were there for the taking. Hayden Emery continued on his winning way, taking out the battle of the 1sts from Kai Ellice-Flint, with Mark Williams third ahead of Richie McClelland and Shane Muldowney. In the 2nds, Garry Halliday won from Tom Payne and Wayne Medcalf while in the 3rds, Craig Coulton was successful over Peter Wellington and John
Payne. Mick Day took the honours in the 4ths with Liz Ambler and Angela Goodwin taking out the minor places. Mark Rylands won the 5ths from Dave Moulton and Kevin Miller while Ben Orman was the winner of the 6ths, with Josh Wellington and Daryl Anderson in second and third positions. entral Coast M a r i n e r s defeated Wellington Phoenix 2-0 in Tauranga, New Zealand on Sunday September 25.
C
Goals to towering Dutch defender Patrick Zwaanswijk and emerging young striker Bernie Ibini-Isei won the day for the Mariners in front of approximately 3,000 fans at Tauranga’s Bay Park complex. Zwaanswijk opened the scoring just five minutes from half-time when he met Oliver Bozanic’s sweetly taken corner to head past Mark Paston in the Phoenix goal. 79 minutes in, Ibini-Isei doubled the Yellow and Navy’s advantage with a strong finish from close range.
Central Coast had the better of the chances throughout the match with Qantas Olyroos captain Bozanic, as well as former Phoenix player Troy Hearfield and new recruit Adriano Pellegrino going especially close to adding to the scoreline. Chris Greenacre and Tim Brown had the best of the opportunities for the Kiwi side; however, their efforts failed to beat goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, who was largely untroubled on his return to the Mariners starting eleven. Both Graham Arnold and Ricki Herbert took the opportunity to shuffle their packs in the second stanza, adding valuable, high intensity game time to the legs of their players. “For us, the result is not important,” Arnold said post
match. “This was a good, structured performance by the side and that’s what matters most. “Today we welcomed back three young players to the team [Ryan, Ibini-Isei and Sainsbury]. Mustafa Amini is not ready yet, but it was good to have those three players back in the team as well as the likes of Brad Porter on the pitch after half-time. “Again, this was another opportunity for us to get minutes in the legs of our squad against a good quality opposition in testing conditions.”

Mariner fails to break deadlock for Olyroos he Olyroos recorded a 0-0 draw with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their opening match of the third round of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympic Games at Hindmarsh Stadium on Wednesday September 21.
T
The Olyroos were led by Central Coast Mariner Oliver Bozanic. As was expected, both teams attacked each other from the opening whistle, with the UAE having the better of the early exchanges. The Olyroos had two good opportunities to opening scoring in the 20th minute when defender Matt Jurman headed over the bar from an Oliver Bozanic corner and three minutes later when Bozanic’s free kick found Ryall’s head but his effort went wide of the goal. The UAE had a good chance on the half hour when Ahmed Khail had a shot from 25 metres out which went marginally wide of the Australian goal. Khalil looked to have broken the deadlock two minutes later, when his shot from close range found the back of the net only to see the goal denied as the assistant referee saw him to be in an offside position. In the 35th minute, the Olyroos captain Oliver Bozanic was next to have a great shot on goal from long range. Bozanic’s well struck left-footed shot looked on target but was deflected away by a UAE defender for a corner.
Just before half time, Bozanic nearly turned from hero to villain when he mistimed a back pass to his goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne which allowed Ali Mabkhout to intercept and head towards a oneon-one with the Australian custodian. Fortunately, Bozanic recovered quickly and was able to make a telling last ditch tackle on Mabkhout to defuse the situation. The second half saw the Olyroos lift their game considerably and with the improvement came better scoring chances. Just before the hour mark, Aziz Behich floated in a perfect cross from the left which found Mitch Nichols in the middle of the box. Unfortunately, Nichols’ resulting header was slightly off target. The UAE had their best chance of the half five minutes later when Khalil dribbled into the Australian penalty box and shot low and hard to the far post. Redmayne responded with a fine reflex save dropping to his left and parrying the ball away from goal. In the 68th minute, Nichols had another chance from inside the box, this time from a Marko Jesic cross from the left. This time, Nichols’ diving header from close range was directed straight at the UAE goalkeeper, Ahmed Mahmoud. For the remainder of the match, both teams pushed hard for the winner but with no real chances forthcoming. In the end, both teams had to settle for a point each in what a very interesting contest, albeit without any goals. At the post-match media conference, Olyroos Head

Coach Aurelio Vidmar was disappointed that his team didn’t find their rhythm and play to their potential. “It was certainly a difficult game for us tonight,” said Vidmar. “In no way did we ever get our rhythm. “For the half a dozen games that we have played over the past twelve months, this is certainly a performance that was not up to scratch. “But in saying that, we also have got to look at where we are at in terms of players coming to the end of the pre-season. “Some have played quite a few minutes in the pre-season, some haven’t. “I always thought it (tonight) would be a tricky one. “We got a point so we’ll have to take that and get ready and prepared for the next game against Iraq,” concluded Vidmar. The Olyroos will play Iraq in their next AFC Asian Qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympic Games match on Wednesday November 23 (Venue TBA) and then Uzbekistan four days later at Parramatta Stadium in NSW. The teams in each group of the third round of qualifying play in a home-and-away format from 21 September 2011, to 14 March 14, 2012, with the winner of each group directly qualifying for the London 2012 Olympic Games Football competition. The three secondplaced teams from the third round will clash in a playoff at a centralised venue from March 25 to 29, 2012 and the winners of this group will meet the representatives of CAF (Africa) for a berth in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

entral Coast Mariners today officially unveiled the Club’s playing kit for the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season.

Modelling the Mariners new home kit was captain Alex Wilkinson. “I think the fans liked the stripes from last season so I am glad that we stuck with that,” Wilkinson said. “I think these kits will prove to be pretty successful
with supporters and to be fair, hummel have got some decent strips and gear.” “The material of the kits feels better than in previous years,” defensive midfielder Rostyn Griffiths said. “As a player, it is important to feel comfortable on the pitch in order to play to your full capacity.” NAB Young Player of the Year Mathew Ryan and new Mariners shot-stopper Justin Pasfield wore the Club’s contemporary pink and green goalkeeping attire,
while young-guns Mustafa Amini (home) and Bernie Ibini-Isei (away) added their youthful exuberance to the unveiling. Hummel Australia National Brand Manager, Mr Nathan Russell, was on hand at the launch and said the company is ecstatic to have formed a solid partnership with the Central Coast Mariners. “We’re proud to be involved with the Mariners,” Russell said.

Mariners defeated 3-1 by Ben O’Neill
entral Coast Mariners lost 3-1 to 2011 O-League C h a m p i o n s Auckland City in New Zealand Wednesday September 28.

The Mariners took the lead through a smart finish from the edge of the area by Qantas Olyroos captain Oliver Bozanic, before the ASB Premiership side leveled mid-way through the opening 45 from the penalty spot. The Yellow and Navy fell behind on the stroke of half time, with the home side making their visitors pay via a fierce counter attack. Auckland struck again deep into second half additional time to finish as the victors. Post match, Mariners coach Graham Arnold said
the friendly against Auckland was the final test his side needed heading into the Hyundai A-League season proper. “They are a team that is going to the FIFA Club World Cup and they have some very good players,” he said. “The three Spanish players they have brought in are of a very high standard and full credit to them, they played well and at a very high intensity. “But the result was never the most important thing for us tonight,” he said “This match was always going to be used as much as a fitness drill as much as anything else. “We played man-on-man throughout the entire pitch to ensure everyone kept working hard for the 90 minutes. “I don’t like to have not
played a game more than 10 days before another match, so this was the perfect final hit-out for us,” he said. Arnold also praised Auckland City’s hospitality off pitch. “Their great club has treated us fantastically well, putting us up in New Zealand and giving us a great game. “We can’t thank them enough for their generosity.” Central Coast will continue their preparations on the training pitch prior to the season opener against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday October 8. The Yellow and Navy’s first home fixture of the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season is against Gold Coast United at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday 15 October.

he Gosford Women’s Premier League (WPL) ladies will be playing their washed out NSW Football Champion of Champions quarter final match against Padstow Hornets (champions of the Bankstown Association) at Coleman Park, Georges Hall, at 2.30pm Sunday, October 9 (weather permitting).
Padstow defeated the reigning champions and 2011 State Cup champions Wollongong University 1-0 in what would be considered a major upset in the last round, so they should be
a big test for the Gosford Dragons. This, of course, means the competition has been thrown wide open with the winner of this weekend’s game lining up against Coogee United (Eastern Suburbs Assocation champions) in the Semi Final the following week. Manly Vale, who defeated Gosford 3-2 in last year’s quarter final round, are still alive on the other side of the draw, so should they progress, Gosford may well line up against them in a final showdown on the 23rd October, which is Gosford’s objective. Gosford coach, Mark Yule, said. “We are at close to full strength, (even) with the ongoing absence of Captain Neisha Klessattel
who underwent successful ankle surgery last week.” Recent talk on the street of the lack of home ground availability for the Champion of Champion games has been buzzing of late. Central Coast Football’s General Manager Peter Townsend, he advised that with recent washouts and an expanded finals domestic competition, all Soccer NSW could offer was one game on the coast. Townsend further said, “It was impractical to open Pluim Park for one single fixture. “Had Soccer NSW offered the three games, Kincumber, Avoca and Gosford would have gladly made Pluim available,” he said.

On the Water
Fishing report by Rob Longney
e were finally blessed with a weekend of fine weather, which had the boaties and fisherman very happy, but it was short lived; the following weekend saw heavy rain, spoiling the fishing once again.
W
Flathead have started moving up the estuary, with some good Flathead being caught on soft plastics. Half tide rocks and Lobster Beach seem to be where the more consistent catches are
coming from. If you go further up the estuary, around Paddys Channel, the flats flathead catches are increasing. Hotspots for Bream of late have been over at Patonga, using freshly pumped nippers, while plenty of school bream are being caught at the Rip Bridge and Orange Grove. With so much fresh in the system, smelly baits such as chicken gut with aniseed or live nippers and fresh Hawkesbury Prawns should yield you a feed. Whiting have been plentiful, with the guys over Empire Bay way bagging out
and the top end of Paddys producing bag limits as well. We have had a number of big whiting weighed in at BNB for club records; most of these big guys are going into the 800gram plus mark. This is a good sign that the bruisers are out there. Salmon action has been plentiful around Boxhead, Pearl Beach, Killcare and Tallows have had mass schools of Salmon and some of the fish that have been weighed in at the interclub have been around the 2 to 3kg mark. There has been a few tailor mixed in with the schools just to liven things up

a little. There has been plenty of action around Lion Island and the mouth of the Pittwater. Once again, I’m hearing that the Jewfish are quiet. I’ve spent numerous nights out fishing the Rip with great success. The fish are not big but they are consistent. The help of our trawler getting a few fresh squid has helped the cause. The guys at Woy Woy have had fresh squid for the past 2 weekends in a row, with fresh Hawkesbury Prawns.
Fresh Hawkesbury Prawns are another sure winner, another of the Jewfish’s favourite baits to eat. Rumours coming out of the Hawkesbury River that fish are being caught around Juno Point, with the odd 10kg fish being caught over at Flint and Steel. Blackfish are still a regular catch. Old mates Clive and Ricky have been getting nice fish along the Orange Grove stretch and Patonga along the rocks. Blackfish brigade at
Empire Bay say the main channel is still producing. One Blackfish was caught on a soft plastic meant for a bream or whiting. Well, the fishing can only get better Let’s just hope the weather improves with it. The BNB junior programs camping trip to Patonga is coming up, so let’s hope the weather comes good for all. Just a last reminder to those using the water ways, make sure you have all your safety gear on board your boat as the water police and water ways are on the prowl.

Toukley RSL Men’s Triple Simmons to Bowls Championship represent Australia at OJU World Cup
by Barry Middleton
by Lindy Simmons
ne of Woy Woy Judo Club Instructors, 26 year old Daniel Simmons, will be among a contingent of 70 team members consisting of men and women from all states selected to represent Australia at the 2011 Oceania Judo Union World Judo Cup in Apia, Samoa in November.
O
This Olympic Qualifying Event will take place over three days from November 11 followed by a four day International Training Camp. Simmons secured his spot on the National ladder in the Men’s U73kg division, after achieving 2nd place at the 2011 Victorian International Open In late August and a 3rd place two weeks later at the NSW International Open. The NSW International Open is a heavily contested tournament with many National and International Competitors from New Caledonia, Japan & France taking part. Simmons said “I was very excited to be named in the team, I’ve worked hard this year, dedicating all my spare time to training and I am very proud to represent my country.
“I was fortunate to compete internationally for the first time in July at the World Cups in Miami, Venezuela & El Salvador,” he continued. “There, I watched the World’s Elite Judo players vying for points to make the Olympic Team and although I am not yet in the Olympic contention it inspired me take my judo to the next level”. From October 24 to 29, Daniel, with his fellow team mates will travel to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra to attend the National Elite Training Camp. It is here they will physically prepare for the World Cup by partaking in daily High Endurance & Cardio workouts followed by four hours of judo. Simmons said “The Olympic Qualifying Competitions are so wide spread that players barely have time to acclimatize before they’re off to the next event. “Samoa will be no exception with very strong Judo expected from Russia, USA, Canada, Korea and Switzerland. I am very happy with my results so far, but there is always room for improvement; U73kgs has a lot of good players and good
depth, I’m definitely looking at building on my techniques before Samoa.” Woy Woy Judo Club Chief Instructor Danny Simmons (5th Dan) is aware of what his son will be up against in Samoa, himself an Australian Representative and Silver Medalist at the 1968 Oceania Championships in New Zealand. “I’m very proud of Daniel’s selection.” Danny said. “As he knows, being an Olympic qualifying event, the competition will be very tough, but hopefully all his hard work will see him win a few fights and maybe a medal. “Either way just being there is a reward in itself, the experience stays with you forever so good luck to all of them,” he said. Although not mainstream in Australia, Judo is the second most popular sport in the world with over 70 million players. A full contact sport, Judo improves your core stability, increases physical fitness, balance and coordination. Woy Woy Judo Club commenced in 1982 and is a Community Based Organization that has nurtured State, National & International Representation.
Grommet Comp sees good waves
by Nick Siversten
he MOB (Macs’ Own Boardriders) Grom Comp was held recently at MacMasters Beach and scored some nice little point waves for the occasion.
T
“The younger members of the club were really stoked about the conditions,” said Grom Comp coordinator Nick Siversten.
“All the groms (U16s) surfed really well; even the hung-over Nick Raymond impressed me after celebrating his 18th the night before. “He made the heat but gave up his position for a much fresher Andy McEwen. “Some of the surfers who really impressed me were newly nicknamed Styler Cochran dropping some big totals throughout the morning.
“Nick Kenny’s always fun to watch too, especially on 2-foot Macs Point. “Plus, Jackson Howell hunting tiny tubes only he could fit in and throwing tail in his first heat but he bummed out in the semis.” Mitch Raymond’s backhand attack won him the 14s. Tommy Payne, Jasper Davis, Seamus Hogan and Mike Drennan all surfed well.

uring the month of September, Toukley RSL were blessed with good weather conditions, which reflected the high standard of bowling of which our club championship games are noted.
D
This particular Saturday (September 24) was no exception, with our bowlers displaying a competent and determined quality of bowling which in turn produced a mixed bag of results. Rink 9 was a fine example of such a game when Vince Mulcahy, Ray Foster and skipper John Sharp played Dave Spiers, Rod Hinchcliff and skipper Peter Hamill. This game started well for Peter, scoring one on the first end and then a further four on the second end; however, this early lead was short lived. By the end of the fifth end, John scored seven shots. In response, the Hamill team then added nine shots over six ends, the score now was Peter 14 John 7 and
John had added another three shots at the end of the 12th end. The game was now approaching its conclusion and during the next two ends both teams scored one shot each, score now being Peter 15 and John 11. Over the next five ends John scored another eight shots the score was now John 19 and Peter 15. During the next two ends, Peter scored a further three shots. This was not enough, as John’s team scored two shots on the final end and finished as winners of this championship match. Final score was John Sharp 21, Peter Hamill18. Rink 10 was the location for the next championship game and the teams were Dean Lewis, Len “Jacko” Jackson and Skipper Jim Elliott. Their opponents were Anthony Whitbread, Troy Williams and Skipper Troy Wilson. Team Elliott gained the ascendancy immediately and was bowling very cautiously but confidently
and at the completion of the eighth end were leading 124. Surprisingly, as the game of Lawn Bowls sometimes goes, Troy Wilson’s team came back strongly and in the space of five ends added an incredible eleven shots. At the completion of the 13th end, the score was Jim 12 Troy 15 and not to be out done, Jim Elliott’s team rallied and scored a further four shots in three ends. Jim was now holding a one shot advantage 16-15 at this crucial part of the game when Troy Wilson’s team managed to claw back three shots on the seventeenth end and now led 18-16. Jim managed to score four shots from the next two ends which meant the result of this game was now in a precarious position for both teams. The next two ends proved to be somewhat of a disaster for Jim Elliot’s team, when they unfortunately dropped nine shots in the final two ends. Final score was Troy Wilson 27 defeating Jim Elliott 20.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport boxer fought against some of the best middleweight fighters in NSW with bouts on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. “My fights were against quality opponents - the best middleweights in NSW - and I eventually won, becoming the new NSW middleweight champion”, said Scully. Becoming the new champion entitles Scully to fight at the Australian Olympic selection titles to be held in Hobart in February of 2012. Sue Harvey was present, on behalf of Creighton’s who sponsored the Charity Day prize money. $3000 was raised on the day and Gwen Jarratt Umina’s President presented a cheque to Fiona Crain of ICA. ICA supports local
women and children on the Central Coast with refuges, emergency care and establishment packs when necessary. The tournament consisted of two games of bowls, with lunch provided. It turned out to be a very windy day, slight built members had a hard time staying grounded. First prize for their bowling were Umina players who won $200 per team, subsequent prizes of $120, $100 and two mystery prizes were handed out on the day.
