Gosford to receive extra funding he Gosford electorate is eligible to receive an additional $100,000 as part of the Community Building Partnership program, according to minister for the Central Coast Mr Chris Hartcher.
T
Mr Hartcher said the program, announced by Premier Barry O’Farrell, fulfils an election commitment to deliver vital infrastructure to communities throughout the State. Thirty five million dollars is available under the initiative, which means $300,000 is available under each electoral district, with an additional $100,000 available for the Central Coast electorates due to high levels of unemployment. “This is about helping communities move essential projects forward and improve the provision of local services,” Mr O’Farrell said. Mr Hartcher said the program aims to support a diversity of community
needs. “Local jobs and community participation will flow from projects considered eligible for funding. “I encourage community organisations and local councils to consider their eligibility for the program. “The successful projects in Gosford, Terrigal, The Entrance and Wyong will be announced by the Premier in March next year.” The 2011 Community Building Partnership program is open for applications for seven weeks and will close on Monday, October 31. Media Release, 19 Sep 2011 Caroline Hutcherson, Office of Chris Hartcher MP
Following the launch, a shopfront will be opened in Mann St, Gosford, on Tuesday, October 4, to seek the community’s feedback on the project. The master plan, as well as a 3D architectural model and a number of artists’ impression will be available for members of the public to view. Staff will be available to answer questions and also an online survey will be taken. The Central Coast Regional Development Corporation (CCRDC) has been working with its development manager Lend Lease for the past six months toward producing the new Masterplan.
CCRDC senior development manager Mr Rob Kitchen said: “The project work done to date has had good reviews and feedback and we look forward to having the community further engaged.” Mr Kitchen will attend the Gosford Business Improvement District’s (GBID) annual general meeting on the same day as the launch to speak about the project. GBID will welcome Mr Kitchen as the guest speaker for its third meeting at the Gosford Hotel from 7:30am. Kaitlin Watts Interviewee: Rob Kitchen
Donnelly sees things differently ocal community groups in Gosford have missed out in the state budget, with the O’Farrell Government cutting $47 million in funding from the Community Building Partnership program, said Labor MLC for Gosford Mr Greg Donnelly.
L
“In 2010, the Community Building Partnership provided more than $58 million in funding to local community groups and councils across NSW to build or upgrade facilities like community halls and sporting grounds,” said Mr Donnelly. “Under Premier Barry O’Farrell’s state budget, funding for the program has been reduced to just $11 million in 2011-12 – that’s a $47 million cut,” he said. “Slashing the Community Building Partnership budget means that local communities like Gosford are paying the price, with less funding for local infrastructure projects. “Last year, the Community Building Partnership Program had been embraced by local community groups in Gosford. “In 2010, local community groups and Gosford City
Council received a total of 30 grants to complete local projects like: Peats Ridge Public School P and C Association received $84,965 for the fit out of their school hall, Coast Shelter received $75,000 for
the fit out and conversion of a warehouse into a two storey community centre and The Bays’ Community Group Inc. received $45,000 for the construction of a new general purpose room. “With total funding for
the Community Building Partnership now slashed by more than 80 per cent, this year many local community groups in Gosford will simply miss out,” he said. Media Release, 13 Sep 2011 Greg Donnelly, MLC for Gosford

Coast Connect for our charities Coast Connect Day will be held at Niagra Park Youth Centre on Tuesday, October 11, to connect to those in the Central Coast community finding it tough.
A
This focused community event is a day which brings together all of those agencies and services who can offer assistance under one roof. Assisted by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, 96 government and non-government servicesagencies and armies of volunteers will come together for one day, to assist as many as possible. Those needing assistance will have access to services that may help them along the path to maintain their tenancies and even to end their homelessness. Coast Shelter’s executive officer Mr Laurie Maher said: “Homelessness has no socio-economic borders, we have assisted people living and sleeping in their cars from suburbs scattered right across the Central Coast.” “Sleeping in cars and couch surfing, sleeping rough puts at risk people, particularly young people suffering abuse and exploitation, and can add to the loss of a person’s health, interpersonal relationships, job opportunities and
education,” said Mr Maher. Free travel passes are available for people to be able to make their way to and from the Connect Day. Practical assistance which is sometimes taken for granted will also be available on the day including housing and employment assistance, health and dental checks, clothing, legal services, accommodation and educational services. Haircuts and a little pampering will be popular as will food and beverages all provided free of charge on this wonderful community event. “We know mountains can be moved when we all work together to achieve a common goal,” said Coast Connect Day committee president Mr Gavin Shepherd. “Coast Connect day will break down barriers that are preventing people from moving forward and provide practical services and responses that will make a difference,” he said. Central Coast construction c o m p a n y has won the 2011 Master Builders Association (MBA) of NSW Excellence in Housing Awards in the category of Best Home Unit $500,000$700,000 for a property at Avoca.
A
MudgeCorp Design and Construction Management is no stranger to the competition, having being named joint winner last year for Best Contract House $1 - 1.5 million for an Avoca Beach property and Runner Up in the Young Builder of the Year category. The MBA (NSW) Housing Awards is the highest profile event on the building industry calendar attracting approximately 800 building industry participants each year. The awards reward quality, workmanship and innovation. MudgeCorp’s most recent win was based on the contract price to construct one of two architecturally designed units they were contracted to build at a total

cost of $1.3 million. The property is situated on a prime parcel of land at Avoca with 180-degree beach and ocean views. Both winning projects involved the participation of a number of local subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, local government representatives and designers, including Copacabana based residential and commercial interior design team, Rocksalt interiors. MudgeCorp Design and Construction Management
managing director Mr Steve Mudge said regular collaboration with a trusted team of local professionals offers a win-win all round. “As project managers we win by being able to put our trust in a business we know and value; the client wins through the achievement of a project that runs seamlessly, on time and within budget; and the community wins because we’re keeping things local,” he said. A growing team, which currently stands at 13, including three full time
apprentices, MudgeCorp is bucking the trend of a slow down in building activity through their innovative building techniques and highly efficient work practices, a fact reflected in the judge’s comment on their most recent win. “The builder’s attention to detail and his use of skilled tradesmen was reflected in the very competitive category.” Media Release, 13 Sep 2011 Phaedra Pym, Business Insider

he Community Environment Network (CEN) has teamed up with Copacabana Landcare and will hold a Copacabana Seed Collection and Propagation Workshop on Saturday, October 1.
The workshop will be the second community event funded by the Federal Government through its Caring For Our Country Grants Program. The project is designed
to support the Copacabana Landcare group in its restoration efforts at Copacabana dunes and involve the local community in the awareness and education of the dunes.
“Participants will learn about native dune plant species, take part in seed collection activities and propagate plants for the Copacabana Landcare Group” said CEN project
officer Ms Jen Dwarte. “Participants will also be able to join our Habitat For Wildlife program which provides information on how to utilise local native plants in your garden and will give you two free plants to get you started,” said Ms Dwarte. Greens NSW MP Dr John Kaye said he offered his party’s unqualified support to parents and teachers at the Two Schools Two Sites rally which called on education minister Mr Adrian Piccoli to overturn the decision to relocate the primary school. “It is appalling that parents and teachers have been driven to protest action by education minister Adrian Piccoli’s persistent refusal to disclose details about the government’s review of the Gosford Public School move,” said Dr Kaye. “Mr Piccoli ignored the community when he proceeded with the relocation without bothering to consult with teachers, parents or local residents. “The Minister is undermining public education on the Central Coast by failing to provide a quality safe environment for students and allowing for the school to grow with an expanding population. “Before becoming Minister, Adrian Piccoli promised he would not become another Terry Metherill. “Within six months of winning office, he has displayed the same callous disregard of the community
and the same zeal for closing down schools as his Coalition predecessor. “Local member Chris Holstein has failed to communicate to the Minister the depth of anger over the O’Farrell Government’s shameful land grab. “As the mayor of Gosford the redevelopment of the waterfront was a pet project for Mr Holstein. “As the local member he is incapable of providing unbiased advice on this matter to his education minister. “This issue is escalating as teachers and parents from outside of the Central Coast are joining in the protest. “The Gosford Public School land sale and relocation has demonstrated that no public school in NSW is safe from the O’Farrell government’s selloff agenda. “It’s time for Mr Piccoli to listen to the community outcry and immediately begin the process of finding an alternative solution that meets the needs of all the students,” Dr Kaye said. Children’s charity celebrates 100 years
False call for Marine Rescue volunteers olunteer Marine Rescue workers from the Rescue Base at Point Clare arrived to tow a boat that was adrift on Monday, September 19, before being told their assistance was no longer needed.
V
A duty operator received a phone call around 5:30pm from one of two people on a 3.4 metre runabout on the Broadwater north of Paddy’s Channel. The person requested a tow to Green Point as they were adrift after running out of fuel, had no anchor, no oars or paddles and no torch. The boat crew was called to the base and Brisbane Water Lifeboat (Gosford 10) was sent to assist. In the darkness the crew could not locate the runabout in the reported area
ocal families flocked to Kibble Park in Gosford on Wednesday, September 7, to celebrate UnitingCare Burnside’s 100 years of providing care for vulnerable children, young people and families.
L
Along with a jumping castle, face painting, free sausage sizzle and popular play activities, the Open Day included formal proceedings to officially mark the significant milestone. UnitingCare Burnside North director Ms Sue Jennings said UnitingCare Burnside had grown to become one of the largest providers of child and family services in NSW. “I was delighted to see so many people come together for our Centenary celebrations, acknowledging the vital work our UnitingCare Burnside and UnitingCare Unifam staff do in Gosford,” said Ms Jennings.
“We work to break the cycle of disadvantage that affects vulnerable children, young people and families. “Our programs demonstrate that parents can be supported to engage with education and work opportunities while caring for their children.” The event also attracted support from Gosford mayor Cr Laurie Maher, member for Robertson, Ms Deborah O’Neill and Federal minister for child care Ms Kate Ellis. “One hundred years of caring for disadvantaged children and families is a major achievement,” said Ms Ellis. “It is really heart warming to think of all the lives that
have been changed for the better over those 100 years and I congratulate the Burnside on this tremendous milestone,” said Ms Ellis. “Burnside’s motto is ‘because children matter’ and that’s a sentiment that I agree with wholeheartedly. “Like Burnside, the Australian Government wants to give children the best start in life, by providing the best quality early education and care.” Ms O’Neill not only expressed her support for UnitingCare, but shared her personal connection with the service. When her parents first came to Australia, Ms O’Neill said they had
stayed with a woman who’d received residential care from Burnside at North Parramatta. Burnside began in 1911 when the first cottage home, Blairgowrie, opened in North Parramatta for orphaned and abandoned children. Within 12 years, the Burnside Presbyterian Orphan Homes was the largest children’s village in the southern hemisphere. One hundred years later, Burnside is still providing care for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and their families. Media Release, 9 Sep 2011 Emma Napoli, Uniting Care Children
so the base was contacted and asked to phone the runabout to determine its current location. The base operator was informed the runabout had drifted to shore and those onboard had contacted “Mum” who was bringing fuel. The boat crew was advised to return to base as their assistance was no longer required. Media Release, 20 Sep 2011 Ron Cole, Volunteer Marine Rescue NSW Central Coast Unit
Treasurer explains benefits of Carbon Tax Carbon Pricing Forum was held in the Kariong Parklands on Thursday, September 8, where federal minister for regional development Mr Simon Crean addressed over 50 people.
A
“The minister explained the projected employment growth of 1.6 million jobs nationally that will come from putting a price on carbon,” said member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill. “He also went through a series of Government packages to drive the development of the clean energy sector. “There are many incentives on offer and I encourage all local organisations especially Gosford Council to think
long and hard about how they can take advantage of these opportunities here on the Central Coast,” she said. A number of local business and community leaders also attended the Forum, including Central Coast Business Review proprietor Mr Edgar Adams and Central Coast Community Environment Network convenor Mr John Asquith. Baby memorial site opened at Palmdale second baby memorial site has been launched by Palmdale at Greenway Chapel and Memorial Garden’s following the overwhelming public response from the first baby memorial garden at Palmdale Lawn Cemetery and Memorial Park.
A
The new site, called the Teddy Bear Baby Sanctuary, is designed specifically for the memorialisation of babies, allowing grieving parents to gain important closure when dealing with the unexpected loss of their child. “After losing our baby Imogen, finding a place where we could properly cherish her memory was an important step in our grieving process,” said Kirsty Dyball, who
dedicated a butterfly plaque to her baby girl at the Gumnut Babies Memorial Garden. “Although her ashes are at home with us, we appreciate having a unique area where we can visit to honour her and to deal with our loss appropriately,” she said. Kathy Winter of The Palmdale Group said that the new baby memorial site at Greenway is an important addition for the entire Central Coast

community. “The Teddy Bear Baby Sanctuary is set to become an important part of the grieving and remembrance process for parents who have lost a baby,” said Ms Winter. “Parents can celebrate their baby’s life with a specialised teddy-bear plaque on the memorial wall, which is nestled amongst Greenway’s picturesque landscaped gardens. “We have found that our baby memorial sites are not only being embraced by parents who have recently lost babies, but also by those who lost a child many years ago and did not have an appropriate way in which to preserve their memory,” she said. N
The School will be conducting the family portrait session on Saturday, October 29, for $15. “The best part is the school will receive the whole $15 from each sitting,” said fundraising coordinator Ms Sheller Rayner. The school’s fete will also be held on Saturday, November 12, with proceeds
to be used to revitalise and extend the adventure playground. Rides booked so far for the fete include the twister ride, tea cup ride, jumping castle, tug boat ride and a rock wall. The school is also planning a side show alley, market stalls, spray on tattoos, face painting, cake stalls and entertainment from the
school. A gift basket stall with also be held at the fete and the school is calling on community members to donate new items including baby products, toiletries, kitchen wares, garden products, stationary or toys. Newsletter, 19 Sep 2011 Greg Frohlich, Narara Public School
Open day “a great success” t Philips Christian College held its open day on Wednesday, September 7, and according to principal Ms Michelle Kelly it “was a great success” with 14 new enrolments.
S
“We were blessed with fantastic weather and lots of prospective new families,” said Ms Kelly. Year 8 students participated in a whole day workshop creating Claymation films for their film entries into the St Phillips Film Competition. “I was blown away at the quality that our students were producing and I can hardly wait for the Film Festival in Term 4,” said Ms Kelly. “The energy, activity and engagement were certainly evident.” Students produced an
animated film using stop motion technology and clay animation and learned about film styles and shot types. “Year 5 and 6 had a mock parliamentary debate in the Library which was fabulous,” she said. “I could have been watching the real thing only that they were a little too well behaved and well mannered. “Other than that, it was a very realistic role play and very entertaining to watch. The debate was part of the student’s preparation for their trip to Canberra and enabled them to practice the format of

parliament and to experience the roles held in government. “We had lots of exciting activities in Junior and Senior School as well. “Visiting parents could not have missed the fact that we are committed to the use of technology in our classrooms with Smartboards and Data projectors in almost every room and of course our cheerful, polite and enthusiastic children are always the best possible recommendations a school could have,” said Ms Kelly. Chertsey fete sees record profit
hertsey Public School held its annual fete on Saturday, September 17, and recorded a profit of over $12,000.
C
The fete offered a day full of stalls, silent auctions, sand art, amusement rides, student work exhibitions, entertainment, a chocolate wheel and raffles. “In over 30 years of being involved in school fundraisers
the most impressive facet of this fete was the way that parents and staff combined not only to serve at stalls but also to organise equipment and extra personnel,” said principal Mr John Anderson. “It had a real team
approach that ensured a very successful outcome,” said Mr Anderson. Newsletter, 20 Sep 2011 John Anderson, Chertsey Public School

Students exhibit artwork
ver 500 students exhibited their artworks in the first Artastic art show, held at Gosford Public School in the week of Monday, September 5.
O
The works were the result of a series of lessons which came from the Artist in Residence program organised by the school. Eight local professional artists gave up time to teach the students artistic skills and help them produce the high quality work that reached the exhibition.
The organising teacher Mrs Sue Moore praised the work of the students and the artists after the official opening. “We were very impressed with the work of the students and I have already been approached about the artist program for next year so we are glad to say Artastic was
a huge success. The professional artists also exhibited their work at the show and their work was for sale with four works being purchased over the three days the event ran. Media Release, 15 Sep 2011 Karen Griffiths, Gosford Public School

The Fair will feature livestock displays including cattle, alpacas, horses, sheep, goats, chickens and birds which all live on the Mountain. A petting farm and Guess the Pig’s Weight competition will also be held. There will be talks by farmers throughout the day which will provide insight into the workings of local farms. The Mangrove Cup is expected to be a highlight with local piglets racing against each other and a chance to win on the winning piglets. Activities for kids will include face painting, sand art and plaster casting,
a reptile display, jumping castles, mini jeeps and the Country Decathlon. The local produce display will be held in the hall featuring produce that is cultivated on the mountain including fruit, vegetables, plants and cut flowers. he 2011 Coaster Festival was held on Saturday, September 17, for the fourth year in a row with all bands received well by the large crowd.
Australian pop folk jazz duet Microwave Jenny kicked off proceedings on the main stage at 12:15, followed by Strangers and One Dollar Short. Something with Numbers, The Potbellez and Jebediah also got the crowd excited as the day started to wear on. Festival goer Naomi Bridges said although Something with Numbers and the Potbellez weren’t “my kind of music, they put on a really great show and it was great atmosphere”. She said the Festival coordinators also did a good job and everything went smoothly.
“I thought the way the coordinators set the stages up was really good, they were really convenient and you didn’t have to walk too far from one stage to the other. “There was a really, happy fun, springtime vibe about the Festival,” she said. The John Butler Trio
finished off the event with songs including Better Than and Ocean. Spectator Mr Andrew Mooney said Ocean was his most “amazing song”. “John butler is a freak on guitar,” said Mr Mooney. “They put on an awesome show. “Overall, I thought it was a good day.

Art comp for seniors
G
osford City’s 29th annual Grandma Moses Exhibition was officially launched on Tuesday, September 20, at the Gosford 50+ Leisure and Learning Centre and ran until Thursday, September 22.
The exhibition is a result of the Grandma Moses art competition with seniors being able to enter into five categories; Open, Watercolour, Novice, Seniors Art Group Member and Central Coast Inspired. Gosford Council’s coordinator of seniors services Ms. Rhondda Gibson said that this year’s competition was their
biggest to date. “We’ve had such an incredible response this year with the most entries we’ve ever received, there [were] over 200 works on display. “We have had a range of entries in all of the categories on offer this year and the standard of work across the board has been of the highest quality.
The exhibition was named after American artist, Anna Robertson, who took up painting at 78. At 80, when she held her first one-woman show, the New York Herald coined her “Grandma Moses” and the name later contributed to her success as an artist. Media Release, 12 Sep 2011 Gosford Council Media

She has taught big, medium and little people piano, theory, flute and composition for many years in addition to her choral work. Her a cappella choirs are known for warmly welcoming singers of all levels of experience. They sing music from many cultures in a vibrant and joyful environment and

There, she also founded and directed the VIV Singers (Vision In Voice), a choir for visually impaired singers and for those with aphasia. Ms Becktel is a classically trained musician and experienced singing leader. After years of voice training Ms Becktel said she realised that she did not have the voice of a diva so she decided to hide in a choir. From then, she said she was hooked on choral singing. Since 2006 she worked as a mentor music teacher for The Song Room, a non-profit

Hartin to perform in Gosford
T
he Gosford Bush Poets will hold its monthly meeting earlier than usual this month and will meet at the Gosford Hotel from 7pm on Wednesday, September 28.
This month, those who attend the Gosford Bush Poets will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the funniest and most famous bush poets currently performing anywhere in Australia. “Murray Hartin’s name has become synomonous with wonderfully entertaining, extremely funny and on occasions thought provoking poetry,” said Gosford Bush Poets president Mr Vic Jefferies. Mr Hartin was a founding
member of the outrageously funny group The Naked Poets and has appeared and continues to regularly appear at every major venue throughout Australia. Mr Hartin is the author of the now classic, Turbulence, as well as the very moving and much admired poem, Rain from Nowhere. Both poems have received extensive air time as well as becoming popular performance pieces. “‘Twill be a rare and exciting event when Murray
takes the floor at the Gosford Bush Poets and I thoroughly recommend you arrive early if you wish to secure a good seat for the night,” said Mr Jefferies. “Of course, we will have time for everyone to present their own or their favourite poem, yarn or song before Murray assumes control,” he said. Christmas Party Picnic Race
G
osford’s annual Christmas Party Picnic Race Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 17, and is expected to be a large event with over 1000 pre booked dining packages already sold.
“The implementation of this Saturday racing event into our annual racing calendar only confirms our strong belief that the Central Coast Community is crying out for a more regular program of meetings outside of normal working hours,” said Gosford Race Club CEO Mr James Heddo. “As a midweek Club we do not have the same opportunities as Clubs who predominantly race outside of normal working hours, and the support we have received for our Picnic Meeting is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when a meeting on the Central Coast is positioned in a time frame when people are more likely to be available to attend,” he said. The Gosford Race Club recently presented its Strategic Direction 2020 document to Racing NSW, with the major component being an application to host a standalone metropolitan status Saturday meeting in
late spring or summer next year. The Club could possibly run its four Black Type races on the one day and offer $1 million in total prize money. The other major component was the desire to host a minimum of 12 Friday twilight meetings to be run between October to April each year, and the Club said it remains hopeful that the approval of the twilight meetings will lead to Gosford being the venue of choice if Racing NSW decides to pursue a second night racing venue. “We are very excited by the prospect of a regular season of Friday twilight meetings, which may lead to night meetings in the future,” said Mr Heddo. “We have studied the recent success of the Happy Valley Happy Wednesday night meetings in Hong Kong which clearly demonstrate what can be achieved with coordinated and specific marketing and promotion.
“The interest and support for our annual Picnic meeting in December justifies the Clubs confidence that the repositioning of our racing through the summer months will lead to greatly increased on course activity. “We aim to offer not only a fantastic social event but also a premium racing experience for the huge crowds we would attract. “We have a population of over 300,000 people living on the Central Coast, and this swells significantly during the holiday season with tourists swarming to the region. “We have the prospect of attracting vast new audiences to our venue if we can reposition our race meetings as requested, and I am confident that the Industry as a whole will benefit from these initiatives,” he said. Adrenathon, was held in three parts and was comprised of a navigation race, kayak race and a mystery event which involved a 50 metre slip ‘n’ slide. The race was organised by West Gosford personal trainer Mr Briel Uriel, who said he came up with the idea after he trekked around the world on his honeymoon. “The feeling of satisfaction, pride and awe
we felt when we were able to do something out of the ordinary is something that I think everyone should have an opportunity to experience,” said Mr Uriel. “The feeling that they are pushing themselves harder than they thought possible in some tasks then having a huge belly laugh at a crazy silly challenge the next moment. “I love an adventure and I thought people would too - they just can’t always go out and be Bear Grylls, so I wanted to bring a little bit of adventure to them.” Mr Uriel said he has had some great feedback from competitors and the “turnout was perfect for the first ever Adrenathon”.
Plans of the next Adrenathon are already under way, with different types of events to suit all fitness levels from extreme to family friendly. “We know this is a great bonding experience for families, corporate teambuilding, friends and even just meeting new people,” said Mr Uriel. “It is not just an event you turn up to, run the race, ignore all other competitors and go home. “It is an adventure of challenges and working with people who you know and sometimes who you don’t know,” he said. Gosford ends Avoca’s streak Gosford celebrate victory Photo: Peter Comerford
G
osford Rugby Union First Grade team has won the this year’s First Grade Premiership when it defeated Avoca at Woy Woy Oval by 26 points to 10 on Saturday, September 17.
Gosford were the better team on the day and the win ended Avoca’s run of six successive First Grade Premierships. It was Avoca who opened the scoring in the third minute when fullback Matt Maloney kicked a penalty goal. Gosford then dominated the game territorially but were unable get past
Avoca’s defence. This period of attack saw Avoca follow up with some determined play but they, like Gosford earlier, were unable to post points. In the 22nd minute of the match, Gosford took the lead when prop Simote Lauti took the ball from the back of a maul and crossed in the corner. The conversion from
near touch by centre Tim Hill took the score to 7-3 Gosford. “Their forwards were playing brilliantly and were gaining the ascendancy over the Avoca Beach pack in many of the forward exchanges,” said Central Coast Rugby Union president Mr Larry Thomson. “Hooker Chris
Comerford was playing the game of his life, he was everywhere in attack and defence and was often the first to breakdown, and at times was the main instigator of an attack. Others to play well in the Gosford forwards were number 8 Shanon Hardgrave who made several incisive runs on the edge of the ruck and often got his team over the advantage line. Lock Luke Hennig was also having one of his best games.
“He was securing good ball in the lineout but was also having a good game in general play,” said Thomson. “For Avoca Beach, the Sheridan brothers were in everything. “Prop Luke was a tower of strength, and flanker Bradd was making his mark on proceedings,” he said. A run down the sideline saw centre Josh McGlynn make inroads into Avoca territory and sustained pressure resulting from this attack saw flanker Andrew Moseley cross in the corner for a try which took the score to 12-3 Gosford. The second half opened with a run by Gosford lock Mitch Cornwell which put Gosford deep into Avoca territory but Avoca responded with a run by halfback Dave Horton. An individual 35 metre run by Gosford fullback Peter Miller saw him “ghost” through the Avoca backline to score under the posts. The conversion of this try by Tim Hill had taken Gosford to a very handy 19 points to 3 lead. At the 19th minute mark Gosford all but had the game secure when Josh
McGlynn scored his team’s fourth try. The conversion of this try took Gosford to an almost unassailable 26 points to 3 lead. There was still a quarter of the game to go and Avoca gave it their all to get back into the game. Avoca’s Chad Martin was strong and was making inroads into the Gosford defence. A strong forward surge by Avoca saw lock Adam Winter crash over adjacent to the posts to reduce the lead. This converted try in the 26th minute had reduced the lead to 26 points to 10 but Gosford were able to weather the storm and held on to win the First Grade Grand Final. Gosford had not won the first First Grade Premiership since 2004 and the loss for Avoca Beach ended their winning streak of six successive Premierships. “That achievement will stand the annals of time in local rugby history,” said Thomson. Grand Final Back to back wins for Gosford
W
omens Football Premier League minor premiers, Gosford, secured another Grand Final win by defeating Doyalson 3-2 in the Grand Final played on Sunday September 11at Pluim
Park.
Down, but definitely not out, the Doyalson girls drew first blood with a goal coming from Nicole Mackie in the 25th minute giving them the edge until just before the half time break when Gosford striker, Megan Sullivan, equalized. The Doyalson squad will be the ones to look out for in 2012 if they can keep together and maybe compliment the team by recruiting additional skilled players for the 2012 season. In what was a close fought contest, it was not until the 60th minute that Gosford took control of the game with a brace coming from Angela Beattie finding the back of Doyalson’s net in the 66th and 75th minute putting Gosford 3-1 up. To their credit, Doyalson continued to take the game to Gosford and consoled themselves with a last minute goal with seconds remaining on the clock, giving the northerners a respectable result from a hard fought match.
The win for Gosford sees the girls undefeated in two seasons and both squads becoming reminiscent of
the days when WPL was dominated by Ourimbah and Kincumber three or four years ago.
It would be interesting to see who would come out on top if these four squads, all things being equal, competed against each other. Gosford will now concentrate on the
prestigious Champion of Champions competition which will see them pitched against the best from Sydney and NSW country. The first game saw Gosford pitched against

last year’s runners up, Lindfield, played out last Sunday at South Granville, and coming away with a five nil defeat of Lindfield has given the girls a huge confidence boost. Coach Mark Yule said “The team played one of their better games and we played to our strength, with an early opening goal going to Erin Markwick in the first few minutes from a set piece 25 yards out giving us a one nil half time lead”. “Angela Beattie gave us an early goal in second half with the third coming from a marvelous set piece effort from our specialist at these, Erin Markwick, finding the back of Lindfield’s net 25 yards out.” “From here, we cruised through with two more goals coming from Nat Dawson and Peta O’Loughin,” Yule said. Unfortunately, Neisha Klessattel is out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury that will require a reconstruction from an injury sustained in the grand final match two weeks ago.
