Jets support strong despite 2 nil loss
Mariners on top of the ladder he Central Coast Mariners are currently equal first at the top of the Hyundai A-League ladder after completing 10 rounds.
T
This weekend will see
a grand final rematch, where the Mariners meet the other top of the ladder team, Brisbane Roar. Brisbane Roar’s recent record breaking run of undefeated matches for any football code came to a sudden end two weeks ago and again last
weekend where they lost two matches in a row. Meanwhile, the Mariners have continued their unbeaten run to be equal first at the top of the ladder. Their most recent win was in the F3 derby against the Newcastle Jets at Bluetongue Stadium,

where a large cohort of Newcastle supporters were left disappointed by their team’s inability to score a goal. See inside for comprehensive coverage of the last two matches.
The decision was made at Gosford Council’s meeting of Tuesday, December 6. One written submission was received from Gosford City Sports Council in response to a public exhibition of the policy.
The submission made a number of adjustments including minor wording amendments to clarify the early hand back of certain grounds for competition only. The policy objectives include enabling Council to control and manage the use of sports grounds within the local government area, ensuring the allocation of venues and fields is undertaken in a fair and equitable manner, providing additional guidelines that relate specifically to the allocation of Gosford City Council (GCC) sports grounds and ensuring maximum usage of currently available sports grounds without creating overuse of venues or fields.

lind cyclist Lorin Nicholson rode into Gosford on Saturday, December 10, as part of his Brisbane-toMelbourne Blind Courage expedition to raise $10,000 for Vision Australia.
B
Lorin, a classical guitarist and motivational speaker, started his 1800km bike ride in Brisbane on Monday, December 5. He will end the journey with a performance at Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve. Lorin, 42, was classed as legally blind at age four. He is one of six siblings, three of whom are blind. He has been an athlete, children’s author and one of Australia’s leading youth motivational speakers on anti-bullying as well as being nominated for Australian of the Year in 2009. More than 20 clubs along the way will be helping Lorin and his team, providing him with meals and accommodation. Clubs Australia and cycling clothing specialists Cannibal have come on as sponsors helping Lorin raise vital funds to support Vision Australia’s services for people who are blind or have low vision. Lorin said he is pushing himself to complete the ride to inspire people that anything is possible, and to raise awareness of the large number of Australians who are vision impaired.

“There are 300,000 Australians who are blind or have low vision,” said Lorin. “With an ageing population, this number will grow to about 600,000 by 2020. “Hopefully, by completing this tandem bike ride, I will help change the public’s perception of what blind people can do. “I’d like to thank Central Coast Leagues Club and their members for supporting me on my trip. “Recovery is an important part of the ride each day, and that’s only possible with a hearty club meal,” he said. Clubs Australia CEO Mr Anthony Ball said clubs were keen to support Lorin
in his Christmas bike ride to raise money for Vision Australia. “Central Coast Leagues Club has long been known for its support of local charities. “It’s great but not surprising they were keen to get involved and look after Lorin and his support team as they ride through Gosford.” Vision Australia’s CEO Mr Gerard Menses said: “I encourage everyone to show their support for Lorin.” “He is doing a great thing which will make a big difference to the lives of Australians who are blind or have low vision.”

Mariners
Mariners crush Adelaide by Ben O’Neill
entral Coast M a r i n e r s compr ehensivel y defeated Adelaide United 4-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium in week nine of the Hyundai A-League played on Friday, December 2.
C
Goals to young attackers Mustafa Amini and Bernie Ibini put the Mariners on their way, before experienced Dutch defender Patrick Zwaanswijk netted from the penalty spot in the 39th minute, his third goal in as many weeks. Rostyn GrifďŹ ths added a fourth for the Mariners in the second stanza, adding gloss to a uent team display in the City of Churches. Adelaide started brightly and created the ďŹ rst two opportunities of the match. Neat interplay down either ank saw Ricardo Da Silva and Bruce Djite presented with chances; however, Qantas Olyroos custodian Mathew Ryan was more than up to the test on both occasions. The Mariners then took charge, and it was a sprightly looking Amini who began to impose his precocious talent on the match. First, Amini slalomed through some passive Adelaide defending before ďŹ ring direct at Eugene Galekovic, while just three minutes later the diminutive number 10 forced the Adelaide number one into a better save from long range, but Galekovic could do little to stop Amini in the 29th minute. A delicate slide rule pass by Pedj Bojic found the onrushing attacking ace. Shooting low and hard, the BVB Borussia Dortmund loanee got the goal his skill and enterprise deserved. Amini’s goal sparked a sensational period for the Mariners. In fact, it would take the yellow and navy just three minutes to double their advantage. Michael McGlinchey did well to cross low into the box for November’s nominee for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year, Ibini. Hitting a sweetly timed shot with his right boot, Ibini left Galekovic stranded and underlined his impressive start to the 2011/12 campaign. It would take Central Coast just another six minutes to add a third. Bursting into the box, Ibini was dragged back as
he shot at the Adelaide goal. Referee Kris GrifďŹ thsJones played the advantage, but with Ibini only managing to hit the woodwork due to McKain’s foul, a penalty was awarded. Zwaanswijk, supremely conďŹ dent due to having netted three times already this season, took it upon himself to extend the Mariners’ lead. With composure and class, the imposing former FC Utrecht stopper ďŹ red directly down the centre to send the Mariners travelling support into raptures. Graham Arnold’s chargers began the second half as they had left the ďŹ rst and in the 50th minute it was striker Matt Simon who nearly scored Central Coast’s fourth. Simon struck hard at Galekovic who made a spectacular save, with the hardworking striker ďŹ ring the rebound into the woodwork. On 66 minutes, GrifďŹ ths would net the Mariners’ fourth. An inch-perfect cross by McGlinchey found the head of the defensive midďŹ elder who made no mistake in nodding the ball into the back of the net. GrifďŹ ths’ goal would prove to be the last of the match; however, it wasn’t for a lack of endeavour from the Mariners. Substitutes Oliver Bozanic and Daniel McBreen, as well as the aforementioned Amini, went extremely close to adding a
ďŹ fth for the away team. After the game, Mariners boss Arnold expressed his delight with his team’s performance and praised the efforts of his young guns. “I think the ďŹ rst half was by far the best performance of the season,â€? Arnold said. “The young boys were great, we got 90 minutes out of both Amini and Ibini and that is a big positive.â€?

Mariners drawn with teams from China, Korea and Japan
by Ben O’Neill
he Central Coast Mariners have been drawn in Group G for the 2012 version of the AFC Champions League (ACL).
T
The Mariners were the ďŹ nal team drawn in Group G, and will take on Tianjin Teda of China, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma of Korea Republic, and Nagoya Grampus of Japan, in their initial bid to claim Asian club football’s ultimate prize. After the draw, Mariners head coach Graham Arnold was positive about his team’s
ability to excel in what can be considered a reasonably favourable Group draw, at least logistically, for the yellow and navy. “Obviously, the teams we play will be difďŹ cult, but if you look at where they are located, the travel aspect has become a bit easier for us,â€? Arnold said. “Tianjin is close to Beijing, as is Seongnam to Seoul and Nagoya to both Osaka and Tokyo. “With the A-League starting later and the ďŹ nal rounds of the competition overlapping with the ACL we
hope the dates of the games will be nice to us,â€? he said. The Mariners’ participation in the 2012 ACL marks the second time in three years the club has competed in Asia’s top club competition. In 2009, Central Coast’s ďŹ nest ďŹ nished fourth in a Group involving eventual winners Pohang Steelers of Korea Republic, Kawasaki Frontale of Japan and, as fate would have it, Tianjin Teda of the Chinese Super League. Having learned the rigours of international competition
last time out, the Mariners, as a club, are determined to make their mark on the tournament this time round. “We are focussed on the Hyundai A-League, but now that we know who we will be playing we can begin our preparation for those teams, Arnold said. “Make no mistake, we will be leaving no stone unturned in attempting to excel in the 2012 ACL and want to represent the people of the Central Coast with distinction on the international sporting stage, he concluded.

Mariners dominate Jets entral Coast M a r i n e r s continued their unbeaten run in the best possible fashion with a dominant 2-nil victory over the Newcastle Jets in their Week 10 Hyundai A-League encounter at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday, December 10.
C
Goals from Rostyn Griffiths and Matt Simon ensured bragging rights returned to the Coast, and the result drew the Mariners clear in the head to battles between the fierce rivals. The 25th edition of the F3 derby began with its typical intensity, as both sides defied the humidity in a frantic opening. In the second minute, Jets’ striker Labinot Haliti scored what he thought was the opening goal, only to be ruled offside. The goal didn’t ruffle the home side though, who immediately counter-attacked with their first foray into the Jets’ half for the afternoon with a stinging Pedj Bojic shot. Newcastle custodian Matthew Nash comfortably dealt with the situation, bringing to an end an enterprising sixty seconds of play. As the match developed, both sides attempted to maintain possession, and both built their attacks from the back highlighting the maturity of the Hyundai A-League in 2011-12. Thwarted by a compact Yellow and Navy defence, the Jets tried to catch the Mariners off guard with shots from distance by Ryan Griffiths and Haliti. The dynamic striking combination of Matt Simon and Bernie Ibini for the home side were enjoying some

Luxuriating in a return to match fitness, Amini was beginning to perform the sublime touches of skills that saw him light up the Hyundai A-League in his debut season. In the 24th minute, he unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area that forced Nash into a diving save. The home side took full advantage of the resulting corner from McGlinchey to net the opener from the head of Rostyn Griffiths. Some deft footwork from the midfielder saw him head the ball past a stranded Nash. It was a just reward for the hard-working player, whose energetic performances in both attack and defence continually frustrated the Jets. In the shadows of halftime, Amini almost doubled the lead for the home side after dispossessing the Newcastle defence, but his shot was
deflected away for a corner. It mattered little though, as the home side headed to the break a goal to the good. The second half didn’t begin with the same energetic tempo as both sides still looked to be recovering from their first period exertions. It was the home side who looked to be the more ruthless of the two combatants, as they lifted the intensity seemingly at will after the first ten minutes. Matt Simon loves scoring against the Jets, and in the 59th minute, he added to his tally when he doubled the Mariners’ advantage. Amini released Ibini with a superb flick that allowed the young marksman to find his partner with a well-timed cross. The Mariners’ highest ever goal-scorer made no mistake with his finish, as he blasted home for his fourth of the campaign and his sixth in all matches against the Jets. With a 2-nil lead, the Mariners could have been forgiven for allowing thoughts to drift forward to their looming

top of the table clash with Brisbane Roar next week, but that just wouldn’t be the Mariners way. The Mariners charges didn’t take their foot off the accelerator as they continually pushed forward in search of more goals. The third goal nearly came from the boot of Ibini with the youngster thundering a ball into the cross bar after some excellent lead-up play from Hutchinson and Rose. Ibini was at it again deep into regular time when another thunderbolt rippled the side netting. Continual counter-attacks brought the Bluetongue faithful to their feet and highlighted the Mariners’ determination to amend what has been an Achilles heel for them in recent seasons – the ability to finish teams off late in matches. Daniel McBreen was introduced into the attack late into the match, and he went within inches of the ultimate reward when his header crashed into the cross bar in the final minute of regular

time. Ultimately, F3 derby bragging rights went to the Central Coast side with their dominant display lifting them to equal points with the tabletopping Brisbane Roar. After the match, Arnold was understandably delighted with his teams’ effort in front of a season high crowd of 10,643. “It was a sensational performance on a difficult pitch,” Arnold said. “The boys are very confident at the moment. “Rostyn Griffiths is like an orchestrator in the middle of the park.” Despite drawing level on points with Brisbane Roar at the top of the Hyundai A-League table, Arnold highlighted that his team had plenty of improvement left in the tank. “It’s only ten games in, and as I said before you don’t win the title at the beginning of December – we’ve still got a long way to go,” he said. Goalscorer and arch Jets foe, Simon, said the Yellow and Navy’s concentration

McKinna signs Chinese management deal
Mariners
Ibini nominated for Footballer of the Year by Ben O’Neill
by Ben O’Neill
entral Coast Mariners have confirmed that foundation head coach Lawrie McKinna has signed a one-year deal to manage Chongqing Lifan FC in China’s League One.
C
After a spell coaching Chengdu Blades in the Chinese Super League earlier this year, McKinna recently returned to the Mariners and worked successfully on a part-time basis across a number of the club’s platforms including marketing and football operations. However, with a desire to coach on a full-time basis again and a sense of unfinished business in Chinese football, McKinna has opted to take up Chongqing’s attractive offer and guide the men from the Chongqing Olympic Sports Center in 2012. “I really enjoyed my experience living in China and Chongqing Lifan have given me a fantastic opportunity to finish what I started with Chengdu,” McKinna said. “I have been enjoying my new role with the Mariners but Chongqing put together an appealing proposal that first and foremost gave me the opportunity to coach again.”
In a major positive for the Mariners, McKinna’s services will not be lost to the club. In fact, McKinna has already been retained for the club’s 2012 Asian Champions League (ACL) campaign. In liaison with Central Coast Mariners coaching and support staff, McKinna will work in a consultancy capacity in order to provide first hand information on the Mariners’ ACL opponents. Additionally, the Mariners and McKinna have agreed that the club will have first right of his services when he returns from his second stint in Chinese football. McKinna said he would be keeping a close eye on the Mariners Hyundai A-League fortunes as the season progressed. “I wish the lads, Graham Arnold and the club well. “They are doing fantastic at the moment,” he said. “I hope the fans continue to get behind the team and you can be sure I will be following the matches and news as much as I can from China.” China’s League One is the second division of professional football in China. The top two teams from League One are automatically promoted to the Chinese Super League.

Ibini, was judged on his performance over weeks 5-8 of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season. Ibini is the second nominated player to be announced for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year award following James Brown’s October nomination. Ibini will be joined by a further four players in future weeks to qualify to be named the NAB Young Footballer of the Year at the Hyundai A-League Awards in 2012. The overall winner will receive a $10,000 personal investment portfolio, a NAB Private Client Manager to assist with a range of banking and financial services, and the NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award. To acknowledge the vital role junior football clubs play in the development of today’s young stars as they strive to
reach their potential, NAB will also present a $3000 equipment pack to Earlwood Wanderers Football Club, the football club that Ibini nominated for assisting most in his junior development. With his nomination in the NAB Young Footballer of the Year competition now secured, Ibini will look to keep up his impressive performances in the hope of following in the footsteps of teammate Mathew Ryan, who won the award last Hyundai A-League season. “The first I heard about it was this morning from ‘Arnie’ (Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold),” Ibini said. “It was a really good shock.” “I think the past two games I could have played a bit better but to score two goals in the first two matches I started was definitely a great experience.” Despite clearly working
his way into Arnold’s first team reckoning, Ibini said he wouldn’t be resting on his laurels for the rest of the 2011/12 season due to the competition he faces for a place in the squad, let alone the starting eleven, on a weekly basis. “You can never be comfortable because there are a lot of great players in this team,” he said, “but I think I have been doing pretty well and hopefully I can continue that.” Arnold praised Ibini’s stellar start to the campaign, but said he still had aspects of his game to improve. “This is a great reward for Bernie but he knows he can be even better, and that is an exciting prospect not only for him, but for me, everyone involved with the Mariners, and Australian football,” Arnold said.

The Australian men’s team, who took bronze at the 2009 Asia Pacific Championships, proved too strong for the New Zealanders and took the game 23-16 to win the gold medal. Australia’s fours side of Mark Berghofer, Commonwealth Games gold Medallist Mark Casey, Commonwealth Games Medallist Rice and world number eight Aron Sherriff took a strong position from end six where they led 8-6. That two shot margin was the closest the Black Jacks side of Tony Grantham, Dan Delaney, Ali Forsyth and Richard Girvan got to the host nation for the rest of the game. Australia opened strongly with a four, which the Kiwis replicated in the second end two to have them at level pegging. A two for Australia then a one for NZ followed by a repeat performance by both countries saw the game 8-6 after six ends. Two threes for the host nation and a three for the Kiwis followed by a four by the Aussies in the tenth ends saw them double the Kiwis score, 18-9. By end thirteen, the Australians were up by 11 shots and led 21-10. New Zealand tried valiantly to make a comeback with a three, one and two in ends fourteen 14,

15 and 16 respectively, but it was not enough, with the Australians taking the final end with a two to win gold. “We’re stoked,” elated Aussie Skipper Aron Sherriff said after the victory. “We played really well in the fours, we gelled right from the start and I thought we were a real strong chance to win that one probably at the start of the tournament. “We obviously had to play really well because there are some quality teams, but I think it was a pretty flawless performance for our fours; we had one little hiccup against Singapore, but we got out of that one and we pretty much dominated from then on. “It was a really good performance” he said. “There’s that much talent in Australia that, when you get opportunities like, this you have to make them count; there are some fantastic bowlers waiting to take our spot. “It’s good to get a gold and a silver medal out of these championships, though we’re still definitely going to have perform next year in trials and things to get a spot in the World Bowls team, but fingers crossed, and I can’t wait to get back here “ said Sherrif. New Zealand coach Dave Edwards was full of praise for Australia’s Aron Sherriff in his summary of the men’s fours. “Aron Sherrif was the difference in the men’s game. “I felt we matched the Australians player for player, however Aron played some amazing conversion shots and was hard to stop – he was sensational,” Edwards said.

Following an early morning session which was open to the public, the day involved a number of workshops for local school, TAFE and university students. The students took part in a rock ďŹ shing demonstration and safety talk, a Science of the Surf workshop with Dr Rob Brander, along with some beach and water games and activities. Students also enjoyed a visit from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with emergency staff going through a number of training drills and exercises on the beach.
Mayor of Gosford Cr Laurie Maher said that the day was a major success and enjoyed by all who attended. “There were a number of interactive activities and presentations, everyone who took part had a great day but also took away some vital beach safety messages. “These messages are important for the protection of our community and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in organising this event for helping to ensure our residents are well informed about water safety. “We saw over 130 local students from Avoca Public School, 80 students from Gosford and Wyong TAFE and 300 University of Newcastle students take part during the day. “It is fantastic to see local educators putting such a strong emphasis on beach safety, especially in a coastal area such as ours, said Cr Maher

Wyong Shire Council spent more than $2 million on the new club houses for Soldiers and Shelly, with works still being undertaken at the other clubs. Council has contributed $48,000 to the roof replacement at Lakes Beach as part of its Surf Club ReplacementRefurbishment program, with the rest of the costs of the new roof paid for courtesy of the NSW Government Surf Club Facility Development Grant.
“While the Lakes Beach Surf Life Saving Club owns the building, we are committed to help maintain these important community facilities,” said Council’s natural areas operations manager Mr Luke Sulkowski. The car park was closed for three days from Monday, December 5, to ensure public safety. “We needed to close the car park and keep the public well away because the existing roof contained asbestos,” Mr Sulkowski said. “The club itself and the kiosk were also closed until the roof was replaced.” However, Council Lifeguards were still on hand to set up patrols over the three days to ensure the beach remained safe.

The improvements included ergonomic spinners, reinforced leg brackets and user-friendly kill switches which were designed to make operating the rescue craft easier and improve the lifespan of equipment.
“These upgrades will not only make us compliant with new SLSA protocols for IRB’s, but they’ll improve the longevity of our motors and also make it easier to train new duckie drivers,” said Mr Fitzgibbon. “Surf Lifesavers on the Central Coast pledge to remain rescue-ready 24/7 and this CDSE money will guarantee our commitment to the peninsula in the coming years. “I’m very pleased with the support that Council has provided to SLSA over recent years.” One of Ocean Beach’s IRB drivers Mr Peter Freewater said: “This new motor for Ocean Beach is very welcome and we really appreciate it.”

D

Doylo’s First Division team has continued its successful season registering five wins in 6 rounds so far. After the first day’s play in Round Seven Doylo had 195 runs and their opponents Kincumber were six for 80 in reply. The Division 2 side have won four of their six games. Their current game is in the balance as Kincumber are three for 94 chasing Doylo’s 162. Fifteen year old Josh Abel recently scored a magnificent unbeaten 158 runs in Division 4, while a personal best 89 runs from Captain Shane McManus was a highlight for Division 6 on Saturday. In the Junior Competition, the Doyalson 16A team have three wins and a draw from their five games.
udgewoi Public School’s Girls’ cricket team won the Milo Cricket Regional Final played at Toronto on Friday, December 2.
B
They have now been invited to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground at the lunch break in the test between Australia and India on Thursday, January 5. “What a fantastic
experience that will be,” said principal Ms Kerry Moore. “Congratulations to the girls and thanks to Mr Clifford for coaching them, Mr Emerton and the parents for accompanying them and Liam and Tiegan Kavanagh who have mentored them. “Even though I am not a cricket lover, I will have to go and cheer them on,” said Ms Moore.
Kincumber moves on to cup quarter finals
by Aiden Cuddington
incumber Avoca Cricket Club has progressed to the quarter finals of the SCG Country Cup by defeating Lisarow in a rain-affected match at Erina Oval on Sunday, December 4.
K
After Josh Abel scored his 158 not out
They only need 13 runs with nine wickets in hand to register another victory this Saturday, thanks largely to bowler Josh Abel taking five for nine. The 12A team are running third while the 13Bs had a great day on Saturday, December 10, led by bowler
Hayden Hughes who had the amazing figures of five for one. Doylo’s Team of the Month for November was Josh Abel (Div 4) 158 n.o, Marc Mariner (16A) 80 runs, Christian West (Div 1) 79 runs, Ryan Marsden (Div 2) 68 n.o. and 58 runs, Matt Luxford
(ODLO) 61 runs and 57 runs, Kurt Stevens (ODLO ) 5 for 30 and 64 n.o, Jake Holmes (11A) 2 for 1 ans 26 n.o, Zac Abel (16A and Div 4) 4 for 19 and 44 n.o, Adam Brown (13B) 3 for 1 and 21 runs, Adam Pass (ODLO) 5 for 28 and Ethan Atkinson (13B) 5 for 7.
Kincumber batted first and amassed 214 for the loss of seven wickets thanks mainly to an undefeated 94
from Steve McCabe and 42 from Shaun Robertson. Lisarow’s innings were reduced to 39 overs with a target of 167 but they were bowled out for 143. Kincumber will now represent the Central Coast in the quarter finals which are being held on December 28 and 29 with games at Mt Penang Main Oval, Sohier Park, Baker Park and Woongarrah Oval.

Marlins turn the tables on Ryde
Coast places well at SLS NSW championships
by Central Coast Marlins Baseball
entral Coast Marlins resumed their Sydney Major League campaign with a convincing 9-3 victory over the Ryde Hawks at Wattanobi Oval, Wyong, on the Wednesday night of December 7.
C
Marlins were boosted by the appearances of four of their own Australian Baseball League Sydney Blue Sox players with Mitch Dening, Pat Maat and brothers Boss and Moko Moanaroa returning to add some fire to the hitting line up. It was the Blue Sox connection that provided the first run of the night, as Maat drove in Moko Moanaroa in the bottom of the first inning for the Coast side to lead 1-0. Michael Campbell had the starting pitching duties and kept the Ryde hitters scoreless through the first
two innings. It wasn’t until the top of the third inning that Ryde plated two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Marlins replied in the bottom half of the third inning to tie it up at 2-2, when the Blue Sox contingent again led the way with patient at bats, drawing walks to load the bases and allowing Dan Smith to also draw a walk to plate a run. Ryde tacked on another run on Campbell in the top of the fourth, again taking the lead, 3-2. After a scoreless fourth inning, Campbell was relieved by Paul Anderson who shut the Ryde hitters down in the top half of the fifth inning. Marlins replied with a run in the bottom of the fifth, as Dening hit safely and was scored on a Tom O’Gorman single to tie the game up at 3-3 after 5 complete innings. Anderson continued to
shut down the Ryde hitters, and in the bottom of the sixth, Marlins’ hitters pounced on a Ryde pitching change. Damian Rutherford, Tim Joughin and Moko Moanaroa were all hit by pitches, and scored on Boss Moanaroa and Maat sacrifice fly balls. Marlins led 6-3 after the sixth innings and would now look back. Central Coast added another three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead 9-3 as O’Gorman, Rutherford, Joughin and Dening all hit safely. Anderson then shut the door on the Ryde offence, notching up five strikeouts along the way in his 3.1 innings of work. He then gave way to Kurt Eden to close out the game’s final two outs. Tom O’Gorman was the offensive standout for the Marlins, collecting three hits. Dening had two.
Marvin the Mariner goes behind enemy lines entral Coast Mariners mascot Marvin the Mariner went on a mission into enemy territory ahead of the F3 Derby on Saturday, November 10, against bitter rivals Newcastle Jets.
C
Accompanied by an able support crew, Marvin sought to find out some of Newcastle’s secrets before the big game was held at Bluetongue Stadium. Marvin visited a number of Newcastle landmarks including Hunter St Mall, Newcastle University, and Ausgrid Stadium in a bid to collect some inside
information prior to the muchanticipated clash. Marvin also sought to remind Jets fans, and create some friendly pre-match banter, that the yellow and navy have been “consistently better” than the Novocastrians over the course of the seven seasons of the Hyundai A-League. Sticking posters around the city, Marvin highlighted the all-time Hyundai A-League points ladder which shows Central Coast well ahead of their northern foes, and offered some added talking points heading into the battle at Bluetongue. Total points over seven regular seasons of the Hyundai A-League: Central
by Ben O’Neill
Coast Mariners - 222, Newcastle Jets -195 There was wenty-seven point gap between the two clubs on the all-time Hyundai A-League ladder, equating to nine points more than the Jets earned in the entire 2007-08 season; the year they won the wooden spoon. The Mariners boasted a vastly superior goal difference over the history of the Hyundai A-League, as well as qualification to two AFC Champions League tournaments to Newcastle’s one, three Hyundai A-League Grand Final Appearances to Newcastle’s one and one Hyundai A-League Premiers’ Plate to Newcastle’s none.
