Fitch is Australia’s first Winter Youth Olympics medallist orah Head snow boarder Alex Fitch has made history as Australia’s first ever Winter Youth Olympic medallist after pulling off a fantastic performance in the women’s snowboard slopestyle final to win bronze on Thursday, January 19.

“It’s amazing!” Fitch said.

“I’m so proud.

“It is so good to finally get on the podium and represent Australia.”

Fitch, who was fourth in half pipe four days earlier, qualified in third for the final after completing two solid runs to get a best score of 77.75.

Slopestyle is a new event where athletes ride through a course and perform tricks on rails and off jumps.

The judges score both runs and the top score counts.

As the wind picked up between qualifiers and finals, conditions at the slopestyle course closed in with light rain falling and visibility worsening.

Fitch was third-last to drop into the course and pulled off

a near-flawless run.

She put together a combination of well-formed easier tricks at the top with a 50-50 on the first rail and a tail grab off the first jump.

With a horde of Australian fans scattered up the sides of the course, including nearly all of the athletes who have

finished competition, Fitch powered down the remaining rails and jumps to huge applause.

“It was an ideal run,” Fitch said.

“I got my jumps down and it felt great.”

On a score of 69.75, Fitch was in third position after the

first run.

With medals at stake, the 16-year-old rider prepared to ramp up her tricks for the second run.

Unfortunately though, she couldn’t perfect them as she would have liked.

Pulling a front 360 off the first jump, Fitch couldn’t quite get the trick down and stick the landing which lost her speed, causing her to miss the second jump and get a score of 42.50.

“I didn’t land my second run, but that’s what happens.

“I still got a bronze medal so I am stoked!”

With the top two ladies still to ride, Fitch was in third position from her first run score and the medal was assured.

Canadian Audrey McManiman had nothing to lose on her second run, with the top of the podium locked in following her 84.25 first run. Her second run was also impressive with a 62.75 confirm ing her as the well deserving gold medallist.

With a score of 71.75, the silver medal went to the USA’s Arielle Gold, one of Fitch’s good friends in the snowboarding circuit, whom she sometimes trains with in Colorado.

The bronze on Thursday

at Kuhtai Resort, an hour west of Innsbruck, continues Australia’s remarkable run of winter success.

Australia has medalled at the past five senior Winter Olympic Games.

At Vancouver 2010 a record medal haul with Begg-Smith winning moguls silver, Lydia Lassila winning aerials gold and Torah Bright winning the halfpipe.

Bright is one of Fitch’s heroes.

She has also done a few dry land sessions with the NSW Institute of Sport

World record and 4 national records broken at swim meet o s f o r d swimming pool was awash, with competitors from 33 clubs across NSW, ACT, and VIC all vying for points in the NSW Branch BPS [Branch Points Score] meet held last Saturday, January 21.

A highlight of the meet was an attempt by 75-yearold Tony Goodwin from

Manly to break the 200 metres breaststroke world record for the age group 7579 currently standing at 3.20 minutes.

Tony’s time recorded was 3min 17.5 seconds, coming 2.5 seconds under the current record but has to wait for the world swimming governing body, FINA, to ratify the result before celebrating his achievement.

Fitch was presented with the Innsbruck 2012 mascot, Yoggl, at the venue and will receive her bronze at a ceremony in the Medal Plaza at downtown Innsbruck on Friday evening (Saturday am in Australia).

Marlins secure win and 4th position on the table

he Central Coast Marlins returned from the Christmas break with a hard fought 3-2 over Manly Eagles at Blacktown International Sports Park on Wednesday, January 18.

The win leap frogged the Manly side and put the Marlins into fourth place on the Sydney Major League ladder.

The early innings saw some rusty defence from both sides opening up opportunities though neither side was able to capitalise.

The scoring opened in

the top of the third inning with the Marlins plating three runs, a lead off hit from Michael Campbell who advanced on a wild pickoff from the Eagles pitcher and scored after a hit to Michael Ashton.

Ashton scored on a hit to Geoff Brotherton for the Marlins second run and the away side plated one more run in the inning after a sacrifice fly from Todd Bowden.

The Manly side hit back in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of their own.

Starting Pitcher Jarrett Commane was a bit rusty but

settled in nicely to pitch four solid innings only allowing the Sydney siders to score two runs, while reliving pitcher Geoff Brotherton was excellent not allowing the Eagles to score any runs and closed out the game for the victory.

The Central Coast Marlins game against Manly Eagles scheduled for Sunday, January 22, was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Marlins will be taking on Blacktown Workers at Watanobbi Oval, Wyong, on Wednesday, January 25, at 7:30pm.

Grants program open for applications

pplications for Gosford Council’s annual R e c r e a t i o n Assistance Program are now open for the 2012-2013 funding round.

The program offers grants of up to $5000 to sporting and recreation clubs within the Gosford

Local Government Area.

Projects are funded on a dollar for dollar basis, up to 50 per cent of the total project cost, with a total funding pool of $50,000 available.

Projects eligible for funding include an upgrade or development of buildings such as clubhouses and amenities, fencing, floodlighting, irrigation or

ground improvements, studies or investigations leading to a capital project, the purchase or maintenance of equipment, sun protection or sun awareness projects or hardcourt facility developments or improvements.

Applications close Friday, March 16, with successful applicants announced by June 30.

he Central Coast Academy of Sport will unveil the new naming rights partner of its rugby union program at Mingara’s Gatorade Regional Athletics Centre on Saturday, February 4.

“We are excited to have this new major partner on board with the rugby program and we’re looking forward to officially launching the new partnership on February 4,” said Central Coast Academy of Sport executive officer Luke Tucker.

“The launch will include the unveiling of our brand new rugby playing uniform, which will be co-branded with the new major partner along with existing program partner Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium.

“It’ll be the first time the players and coaching staff get to see the new playing uniform, so I’m sure the boys will be looking forward to getting the gear on and

testing it out,” added Tucker.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport rugby union program forms part of the Australian Rugby Union’s junior gold program

Mariners share points in F3 derby a t r i c k Zwaanswijk’s fifth goal of the campaign was the important equaliser that allowed the Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets to share the points in the 26th edition of the F3 derby on Saturday, January 14, after an entertaining 1-all draw.

The Dutchman’s header extended the Mariners unbeaten streak to 13 matches, a new club record, but more importantly continues the Mariners impressive display of form in 2012.

Newcastle’s away form has been dissected at length this campaign but form means absolutely nothing when it comes to the F3 Derby.

The battle for NSW regional supremacy brings out the best in both clubs, and it was the visitors who started the match stronger.

Marko Jesic fired off a warning shot in just the 9th minute, and Mariner’s custodian Mathew Ryan had to be at full stretch to thwart another promising raid just two minutes later.

At the pointy end of the Yellow and Navy attack, Bernie Ibini and Troy Hearfield were busy early, but were unable to convert some intelligent runs into any real opportunities.

Ibini showed enough toe to frustrate Tiago Calvano and the defender responded

with a physical challenge that winded the young flyer.

They say imitation is the ultimate form of flattery and, the Jets’ opening goal was the perfect counter-attack, turning what has been one of the Mariner’s great strengths of this campaign back on them.

Pushing forward, Brad Porter was attempting to link up with Kiwi flyer Michael McGlinchey on the half-way line but unfortunately for the right back, the Jets’ quickly realised his intentions, cutting off the delivery and counter-attacking with sheer speed that left the home side stranded at the back.

Labinot Haliti showed a touch of class to expertly finish giving the visitors a

one goal advantage.

Just eight minutes later the Mariners had the chance to pull back on level terms when referee Matt Gillett awarded the home side a penalty after a decent delivery from McGlinchey forced the Jet’s defence to back-peddle into the area.

Hearfield had won a freekick for the hosts in excellent field position after his speed had turned Calvano inside out.

The end result was that the defender cynically tackled the striker earning the distinction of receiving the first yellow card of the 26th F3 derby.

Troy Hearfield stepped up to take the shot but, unfortunately for the talented

marksman, Newcastle keeper Ben Kennedy was able to dive to his left and deny the penalty with a strong save.

To his credit, the striker didn’t let the disappointment get to him and he continued to push forward into strong positions frustrating the Newcastle defence.

The Jets were playing a high-tempo game and, in a battle of wits, Arnold decided to try a formation change in an effort to run the Newcastle midfield ragged.

His decision to play fourthree-three was countered

by Newcastle dropping back a defender, but the decision was vindicated as the Mariners’ wide players began to get more touches

of the ball.

In fact, the Mariners best chance to get back on equal terms came from the player on the extreme left of the midfield.

Oliver Bozanic pressed forward in the 41st minute and whipped in a perfectly timed cross that just beat his support players who were desperately trying to get into the box.

As the rain closed in during the halftime break, there was a sense that the match still had plenty of twists and turns to go.

Derbies, after all, are an emotional rollercoaster and the battle-hardened Mariners looked fit and fresh against a tiring Newcastle side.

Youngster Taylor Regan fired off a snap-shot from distance shortly after the resumption of play, but Mat Ryan watched it safely into his hands and defused the situation.

The match continued with the intensity supporters have come to expect from these clashes, but neither side could take advantage of field position to trouble either keeper.

Regan showed great desperation to beat a flying Ibini to a perfectly weighted cross from out wide in the 59th minute, putting it safely out for a corner.

How keeper Kennedy must have regretted that decision thirty seconds later.

Patrick Zwaanswijk has consistently demonstrated this season that he possesses not only a composed head for defence but an uncanny ability to lose his marker from corners and head home well weighted deliveries.

The popular defender was at it again on the hour mark, beating Kennedy on his near-post with a perfectly timed header after an excellent corner from McGlinchey.

It was the Dutchman’s fifth goal of the campaign and had the added bonus of lifting his teammates in this most fiercest of rivalries.

Newcastle had the chance to regain the lead on 66 minutes from a Byun cross, but were unable to capitalise on an uncharacteristic defensive lapse from the Cont, Page 5

Daniel McBreen, Trent Sainsbury and Adam Kwasnik provided fresh legs while John Hutchinson was relishing the space in the middle of the park that allowed him to pass to either McGlinchey or Bozanic.

The two speeders were determined to get involved as much as possible, and their probing runs was causing havoc for the Newcastle defence.

Under the guidance of Arnold, Wilkinson’s game has matured to the point where he now senses an opportunity to inject himself into the attack.

In the 81st minute, this nearly brought the ultimate reward for his side.

After intercepting a tired pass from the Jets, Wilkinson showed a tremendous turn of speed to race 45 metres downfield before linking up with Kwasnik.

He was the man who thwarted the Jets’ next attacking foray with a welltimed challenge.

It was an inspirational run by the captain and triggered three good opportunities for the home side to steal all three points.

First, McGlinchey went on a probing run that beat three defenders and delivered a well-weighted cross into the box.

Unfortunately for the Kiwi flyer, his teammates weren’t able to get there in time to give him an option.

McBreen then had the best chance to steal a win in the 87th minute but his shot was blocked by some committed defence.

His strike partner in Kwasnik had two late half-

chances in stoppage time but was unable to get past a resolute Newcastle defensive structure.

In the end, the 26th edition of the derby ended with the players absolutely spent and a draw was a fair result.

clinical 89th minute strike from super sub Adam Kwasnik secured the Central Coast Mariners an important 1-0 win over Melbourne Heart in their week 15 Hyundai A-League clash played at AAMI Park on Wednesday, January 18.

Kwasnik’s late winner came after an accomplished performance from Qantas Olyroos custodian Mathew Ryan, the 19-year-old’s standout effort between the sticks underlining why he is rated as one of Australia’s top goalkeeping talents.

Arriving to meet Michael McGlinchey’s well placed cross at the far post, Kwasnik struck low past Clint Bolton with full-time fast approaching, disappointing all but a handful of the 5522 fans present at the match.

The goal came largely against the run of play with Melbourne Heart showing throughout the 90 minutes that their current third placing on the Hyundai A-League ladder is a position they warrant.

It was the home team who had the better of the chances in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Terra was causing trouble for the Mariners’ defence.

First, Jason Hoffman released the wily midfielder who had his low shot well saved by Ryan, before his deflected long-range effort cannoned off the woodwork in the 28th minute.

Soon after, Heart left back Aziz Behich met a precise inswinging cross from the right with a firm header, only to be denied by a flying Ryan.

The match was deďŹ ned by two sensational periods of play in both halves that saw all ďŹ ve goals scored in just nine inconsecutive minutes of playing time.

The win extended the Mariners streak to 15 games unbeaten, and increased their lead at the summit of the Hyundai A-League.

Graham Arnold made several changes to the side that did battle with the Melbourne Heart on Wednesday night, most notably handing a starting debut to teenage recruit Tomas Rogic.

Backing up for their third game in a week, the home side was full of running in a frantic opening few minutes that saw them win several corners.

However, Adelaide were themselves in the middle of a hot run of form and absorbed the pressure before calmly beginning to counter-attack.

On the 15 minute mark, the complexity of the match changed completely, when Daniel McBreen netted the opener to give the hosts a one-goal lead.

Bluetongue is a happy hunting ground for the dynamic marksman and he had an outstanding ďŹ rsthalf, frustrating the Mariner’s defenders with his strength, ball distribution and probing runs.

Bruce Djite completed the amazing four minutes of play with Adelaide’s second goal in the 19th minute.

Cameron Watson launched a long-throw into the box and Djite was able to outmuscle Alex Wilkinson and slot home his shot.

Adelaide continued to push forward and put pressure on the home side and the two goal-scorers had perhaps two more half chances to extend the lead but were unable to do so.

The Mariners’ best chance of pulling a goal back fell to John Hutchinson after 35 minutes but unfortunately for the midďŹ elder, his shot drifted over the bar.

Bernie Ibini and Bojic both tried valiantly to nab an unlikely equaliser late in stoppage time; however,

neither player could capitalise on their chance and it was the visitors who went into the sheds with a 2-1 lead.

After not getting much possession in the opening term, the Mariners clearly wanted to control the tempo of the play in the second half, and immediately set about turning the possession count into their favour.

Michael McGlinchey whipped in a cross on 50 minutes that Ibini couldn’t quite manage to get his body into position to unleash a powerful drive.

The Mariners were controlling the match with some slick passing movements, and the visitors appeared to be getting frustrated.

Graham Arnold sensed that the time had come to call in the cavalry and said he wanted to inject sheer speed into the match to take advantage of a tired Adelaide defence.

Tomas Rogic showed glimpses of skill in his debut match including some deft touches that bamboozled the Adelaide defenders.

Adam Kwasnik made plenty of headlines for his heroics against the Melbourne Heart on Wednesday night (Jan 18) and, he no doubt got some column inches with his sublime effort in the 74th minute that drew the Mariners level.

Oliver Bozanic, who made a strong impact off the bench, floated a cross to the marksman who controlled the ball brilliantly with an outstretched foot that allowed him the time to tee himself up and blast a shot past Galekovic.

Just as the opening goal of the match triggered an incredible period of play, so too did Kwasnik’s efforts.

Van Dijk, who hadn’t been able to get many touches of the ball in the first half, went within inches of scoring in the 77th minute.

The striker unleashed a powerful shot that cannoned off the post before Mat Ryan dived desperately to prevent it crossing the line.

While the incident will no doubt renew calls for goalline technology, van Dijk to his credit, believed that the correct call was made, saying after the game that he didn’t think the whole of the ball crossed the line.

Football truly is a game of inches.

The game then experienced another turning point.

Just as Adelaide went the length of the field in the firsthalf, so too did the Mariners in the second.

Troy Hearfield was proving a handful for the Adelaide defence using his speed and agility to get in and behind them.

On this occasion, he was able to pick out McBreen with a delightful pass that the striker was able to drive towards the goal.

An alert Galekovic showed tremendous athleticism to deny the goal-bound shot, but he was only able to parry the shot as far as Joshua Rose.

ustafa Amini from Central Coast Mariners was voted as the most outstanding U21 player in the 2011/12 NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award for the month of December, following standout performances in five matches.

Adelaide threw everything at the Mariners in search of an equaliser.

Their best chance fell to a player who is very familiar with the Bluetongue turf, Nigel Boogaard, whose header was denied by an acrobatic save from Ryan.

The Mariners held firm to record a dramatic victory, extended their lead on the Hyundai A-League ladder, and can now look towards a clash with Gold Coast United on Friday night.

Mariners’ tactician Arnold lauded his side’s capacity to earn a result against a resolute Adelaide outfit.

“To come back the way they did is mind-blowing,” Arnold said.

“I just stayed positive at half-time because I believe so much in the boys, I just told them to play the way we play and stay positive.

“The wonderful thing about this group of players is they take the game plan and they go with it, and they believe in it.

“Pushing Rosey (Josh Rose) into midfield meant that he got closer to the game as well,” he said.

Match-winner Rose put his goal down to timing and anticipation, and felt that the Mariners returned to some of their best form in the second stanza.

“You’ve just got to anticipate things and if your lucks in it will fall for you,” Rose said.

“I think the most important thing tonight was that we

played some great football in the second half.

“That belief (within the squad) is very high at the moment.”

Amini netted twice in December, one in the Yellow and Navy’s 4-0 triumph in Adelaide, and the other in his teams’ 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on December 17.

Determined by a panel of football experts, the NAB Young Footballer of the Year December nominee, Amini said he was elated to be recognised as one of the Hyundai A-League’s elite young performers.

“It’s fantastic for the club and for me as well also to be recognised as one of the Young Players of the Month,” Amini said.

“It’s good for the club having two (nominees) in a row.”

Amini is the third nominated player to be announced for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year award following James Brown’s October nomination and teammate Bernie Ibini’s

November nomination.

The crafty, diminutive midfield maestro will be joined by a further three players in future months to qualify to be named the NAB Young Footballer of the Year at the Hyundai A-League Awards in 2012.

The overall winner will receive a $10,000 personal investment portfolio, a NAB Private Client Manager to assist with a range of banking and financial services and the NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award.

Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said the recognition was no less than Amini deserved for his contribution to his side’s stellar December form.

Arnold added that it was fantastic that Amini’s performances

would ultimately aid the development of future football stars via the $3000 equipment pack NAB will provide to Amini’s chosen junior football institution, Westfield Sports High.

“It’s where they learn all their football and enjoy all their football,” Arnold said.

“When they’re youngsters, they have coaches who are volunteers and put a lot of work in with the kids, it’s a just reward for them.”

With his nomination in the NAB Young Footballer of the Year competition secured, Amini will look to enjoy his final five months as a Mariners player before he links with BVB Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga.

Academy program C to include six elite footballers

he Central Coast Academy of Sport football program will take a new direction for 2012 with the Academy continuing its strong link with the Central Coast Mariners to provide additional development and support to identified future Mariners Youth, W-League and A-League players.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport has previously been involved with the Mariners and Central Coast Football (CCF) in a tri-branded approach to the Central Coast Mariners Football Academy.

With changes to the structure of the junior representative program of the region now in place, this level of development will be looked after by the Mariners and CCF with the Academy to continue its link with the Central Coast A-League club at a higher level of athlete development.

The 2012 CCAS football program will provide a maximum of 6 scholarships to be allocated to male and female athletes of the region who are identified by Mariners coaching and development staff as potential Mariners Youth League, W-League and A-League players.

“The new structure of the CCAS football program will help us to bridge the gap between the junior representative level and

higher representation with our club [Central Coast Mariners],” said Mariners development manager Mr Tony Walmsley who will be responsible for identifying the six athletes to be invited into the Central Coast Academy of Sport program.

“It’s a much more targeted approach and by having just six scholarships available each year, it will be very prestigious and will include only those athletes who we feel have the true potential to progress to the highest level,” added Walmsley.

Central Coast Academy of Sport executive officer Luke Tucker said he is looking forward to the rollout of the new program after a number of months of behind the scenes work to finalise the most appropriate structure and to attract a group of program partners who can add real unique value to the program.

“We’ve been extremely fortunate in securing the support of Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium, Mingara One, Hills Street Sports Medicine Centre, Team Nutrition and Walk On Sports Business Consulting to now be able to provide over $4K in unique benefits to each of the scholarship athletes,” added Tucker.

Invitations will go out to identified athletes within the coming weeks with each athlete to commence their 2012 scholarship position by March.

An official launch of the new 2012 CCAS football program will be held during March.

Mariners secure Sainsbury and add youth trio

entral Coast Mariners have announced that 20-year-old defender Trent Sainsbury has agreed to extend his deal with the Club for a further two Hyundai A-League seasons.

The 2011 Qantas Young Socceroos representative is rated as one of the competitions best young defenders, with the Mariners having to fend off the advances of several rival Hyundai A-League clubs to retain the services of the former Australian Institute of Sport star.

Sainsbury revealed some of the key reasons behind his decision to extend his deal with the league leaders until the completion of the 2013/14 campaign.

“It’s [the Mariners] a good family orientated Club, which suits me and I like that it’s a very chilled out lifestyle here on the Coast,” Sainsbury said.

“Arnie [Graham Arnold] was a big part of me staying here, he’s a very professional coach, and I guess you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone so it was important for me not to go to another Club and basically have to start from

scratch.”

In keeping with the Yellow and Navy’s ethos of signing and developing Australia’s best youth talent, the Mariners can also announce the promotion of three National Young League (NYL) squad members to the Clubs’ 2012-13 Hyundai A-League roster.

Attacker Mitchell Duke, utility James Oates, and midfielder Anthony Caceres have each been rewarded for their stellar form in the 2011-12 NYL. Duke has secured a twoyear deal with the Mariners while Oates and Caceres have been signed to initial one-season contracts.

The trio have also been added to the Mariners 2012 Asian Champions League squad.

Mariners mastermind Graham Arnold praised the Clubs’ promotion of Duke, Oates and Caceres, and the retention of Sainsbury.

“This shows that we want to give our youth a go,” Arnold said.

“The ones who come into our system early will get a chance, to find other players they have to be a very special talent otherwise we will promote our youth.

“In the past two years Trent has developed with us physically and matured a lot as a footballer and a person, he’s one of our youngsters with a lot of potential.”

For Duke, the prospect of fighting his way into the Mariners first team is a challenge he is relishing.

“I couldn’t be happier.

“All the hard work has paid off and now I’m just looking forward to knuckling down and working harder,” Duke said.

Meanwhile, Caceres described earning his first professional contract as a “dream come true” and said that fans could look forward to seeing a hardworking player who likes to contribute in attack.

“I see myself as the type of player who likes to get the ball a lot, keep possession and keep attacking. I just want to give my best for the team and I’m very thankful to the Club for the opportunity,” Caceres said.

Last but definitely not least, Oates said supporters could look forward to his competitive and committed brand of football.

“I’m a very competitive player and person, so for me the hard work starts now,” Oates said.

Central Coast Mariners commence their 2012 ACL Group Stage on Wednesday, March 7, away to Tianjin Teda in China.

Rose re-signs contract

entral Coast Mariners have confirmed that exciting left back Joshua Rose has agreed terms to stay with the Hyundai A-League’s pacesetters until 2015.

Rose has become a mainstay of the Mariners’ defence since becoming Graham Arnold’s first signing in 2010, and has established himself as a firm fan favourite among the Bluetongue Stadium faithful.

The speedy, attackminded yet tactically astute defender’s name has been mentioned in Qantas Socceroos circles since arriving on the Central Coast from Romania and, while he is yet to make his debut for Holger Osieck’s side, it appears Rose is in the frame for any Hyundai A-League squad selected by the German manager.

“I’m enjoying my football, and if I keep doing well, then those things will look after themselves.”

Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said he was thrilled the Mariners had been able to secure Rose’s services for another three seasons and labelled the Rockhampton-born flyer the “best left fullback in the league”.

“For me, it’s a fantastic signing for us, especially for three years,” Arnold said.

“He’s such a good guy and fits perfectly into the group and the culture of the Mariners.

“I’m very happy Josh can get on with football now.”

Arnold lauded Rose’s capacity to contribute in both defence and attack.

“He brings quality; defensively, he’s very strong,” he said.

“He gets some goals and assists as well.

“I think he’s the best left fullback in the league, and

he was happy to secure his future at a club that he feels “settled” at and a community he feels at home in.

“Obviously, with my young boys, it’s good to have that stability,” Rose said.

“We are nice and settled here, so we are very happy.

“My wife and I have bought a house here.

“The football side of things, with a coach like ‘Arnie’ (Graham Arnold), it’s all going along pretty smooth.

“The club suits me well, and if you are happy, you play your best football.”

With his Club future confirmed, Rose said he believes any national team representation will take care of itself should he be able to maintain the type of form that made him the 2010/11 Mariners Medallist.

“It’s always in the back of the mind and obviously playing at Central Coast suits my style and helps me stand out a bit with the license to get forward,” he

“Our table-topping players are prime targets of other Hyundai A-League Clubs, but we are confident of retaining the outstanding talent we have.

Rose’s contract extension ensures he will remain at the Yellow and Navy until the end of the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League campaign.

Using his strength on the edge of the area, Rogic weaved into the box before slotting inside the far post.

The game took a little while to get going after the break; however, the Mariners’ experience ultimately told in the 64th minute.

Any youth league team featuring the likes of Rostyn Griffiths, Stuart Musialik, Brad McDonald and co is always going to be hard to stop, but it was young-gun Appiah-Kubi who found Central Coast’s third.

The ball eventually fell to Appiah-Kubi who struck past Duncan with his right boot.

Looking fresh and eager for his game time, Appiah-Kubi burst forward in the 73rd minute and was dragged down by Nick Cowburn.

With the chance to secure his hat trick, Rogic stepped up and made no mistake in firing the ball into the back of

the net.

The win lifts Mariners Youth, albeit potentially temporarily, into second spot on the NYL ladder.

Braddish makes it two wins in a row at Iron Person

“We had some fantastic results,” said Umina SLSC secretary Ms Christine Lavers.

“Young Lachlan Braddish in the U10s took out first place again after winning this event last year.”

Other outstanding places were Kirsten Miller in the U10s in third place, Indigo Verhoeven in the U15s in second place and Rachel Wood in the U13 in third place.

Others to compete on the day included Piper Riddell-

Gilsenan, Lachlan McLeod, Lily Perry, Mimi Henderson, Jasmine Darwin, Jemma Smith, Claire Gaffney, Mick Hood and James Johnson.

Lachlan, Kirsten and Rachel also took out first place each in the recent Toowoon Bay Surf Carnival Surf Race.

“Umina Nippers are continuing to build in strength towards the NSW State Titles at the end of February,” said Ms Lavers.

Just to cap the month off, Maddison McLeod in the U14s won the Central Coast Junior Life Saver of the year Award for 2011-2012.

Maddison will represent the Central Coast at the State level for this prestigious Award.

he Ocean Beach Malibu Club held its annual presentation night at the Umina Beach Surf Life Saving Club on December 17.

For the first time in the 21 years history of the club, a junior surfer has taken out not only the overall 2011 club championship, but topped off a very successful year by winning the 2011 Long John Memorial Old Mal title.

Kai Ellice-Flint achieved the double while still only 15 years of age, showing what great potential he has in the surfing world.

Kai outpointed some very capable surfers in the final of the old mal, beating Hayden Emery, Matt Sing and Chris Irwin to win the title.

Cyndi Zoranovic successfully defended her ladies club champion title, achieving a double of her own in the process by winning the over 35s age division against the men as well.

Liz Ambler, Angela Goodwin and Angie Smith filled the minor places.

In the overall point score for 2011, Mark Williams finished runner up to Kai with Marty Skewes in third position while Craig Coulton and Wayne Medcalf shared fourth place on equal points.

Bowls recruitment campaign underway

owls Central Coast has embarked on the biggest, most concerted recruitment drive in the history of lawn bowls on the Central Coast.

The 22 clubs participating will letter drop a leaflet to over 50,000 homes in an area from the Woy Woy Peninsula in the south to Morisset in the north.

The leaflet is inviting those interested to drop into a club of their choice to “Give Bowls a Try at our Open Day on Sunday, February 5, between 10am and 12noon”.

“Bowls is about enjoying the outdoors, getting some exercise, having fun and enjoying the company of others,” said Bowls Central Coast president Kevin Dring.

“Although bowls is the biggest adult participation sport on the Central Coast, we have had State Champions as young as 16 years of age enjoying the game and mixing and competing against all ages, which has the added benefit that the youngsters are mostly influenced by good role models.”

As well as being suited to all ages, bowls is also enjoyed by the physically and sight impaired as there is support and assistance available by way of mechanical aids and specially trained “Blind Directors” so everybody can get out onto the greens and be part of this wonderful game.

So take the opportunity to meet a friendly face and try this affordable game for free at a participating Bowling Club on Sunday, February 5.

Sherriff is bowler of the year for the 7th time

ttalong Bowling Club’s World Number 5 ranked bowler Aron Sherriff was named Bowls Central Coast Bowler of the Year for 2011 at a Presentation Night held on January 19 at The Bay Sports Club and, in doing so, took his total wins to a record breaking seven times for this award in the twenty years since its inception.

As part of the points score system that goes towards deciding the Bowler of the Year, Aron also created Bowls Central Coast history by becoming the first bowler to win all four Zone 15 Championships in Singles, Pairs (with Tony Laguzza), Triples (with John Roberts and Harley McDonald) and Fours (with John Roberts, Lee Trethowan and Harley McDonald) in the one year.

When presented with his award, Aron was

asked by Bowls Central Coast president Kevin Dring to share some of his experiences competing on overseas bowling greens

with the audience and declared: “Some of them, including Hong Kong, were running at about eight seconds and it was

like trying to bowl in my backyard, you had to almost drive to make it to the Jack!”

“It’s always good to come back to Australia after competing overseas and play on what I think are the best greens in the world”.

On the night, Aron was presented with the Wal Rainbow Perpetual Shield for Bowler of the Year, a silver plate for achieving the Grand Slam and an engraved glass tankard for being selected in the Australian and NSW State Sides.

Other awards presented on the night went to Harley McDonald (Ettalong) for Runner Up Bowler of the Year, Alan Rogers (Ettalong) for winner of Senior Singles and Senior Pairs, Brian Burrows (Umina) for winner of Veterans Singles and Veterans Pairs, Lee Trethowan (Ettalong) for Selection in NSW Reserves Side and John Roberts (Ettalong) for Selection in NSW Senior Side.

Beth Quinlan has taken on the job of bowls co-ordinator at Everglades Country Club.

The job is to promote all bowls activities including competitions, tournaments, corporate, social, senior and junior bowls.

Beth comes with over 20 years of playing experience and 10 years of working for one of the premier bowling clubs in NSW. Beth said she is keen to hear from people of all ages wishing to take up the great game of lawn bowls and from any businesses that may wish to start a corporate bowls competition plus any schools in the area that may be looking to add lawn bowls to their 2012 sports programs.

Doyalson comeback surprises Lisarow

oyalson-Wyee RSL Cricket Club enjoyed a memorable day last weekend as its Division One team secured a thrilling outright victory over previously u n d e f e a t e d competition leaders Lisarow.

hree Central Coast Cricket Clubs have been awarded a $1750 grant as part of the Commonwealth Bank Grants for Grassroots Cricket program.

The grant supports local clubs by providing $1000 cash and $750 worth of cricket equipment, including one shade marquee, 50 water bottles, 30 field markers, one kit bag, two

sets of stumps and four cricket counters.

The Commonwealth Bank Cricket Grant will be used by Mountains Kariong Cricket Club towards the purchase of a new bowling machine to lift the standard of development at the club at both junior and senior levels.

Umina District Cricket Club will use the grant to help introduce a midweek primary school based competition for local children.

This competition will provide parents with the opportunity to register their children for the upcoming cricket season, which will increase participation rates of junior cricketers.

Lastly, the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Grant will assist the Woy Woy Junior Cricket Club in creating stronger links between the senior club and the juniors by having quality training gear and acknowledging the achievements of the teams with loyalty membership

awards.

Commonwealth Bank Business Banker for the Central Coast Mark Brown said this grant would go a long way towards supporting local clubs this cricket season and beyond.

“Cricket is an important part of the Central Coast, and this grant will provide great assistance to ensure local cricketers have the opportunity to continue to play the sport they love,” he said.

Lisarow had rolled Doyalson for just 73 runs in the first innings.

Lisarow then declared at 5 for 188 to give them a 115 run lead.

After managing a good second innings total of 237, Doylo then dismissed Lisarow for 83 runs to register a magnificent victory.

Individual highlights included captain Stuart Lockyer taking 5 for 13 while opener George Boyd scored 90 runs.

Doyalson is currently in third position, having won seven of eight games played so far.

The Doyalson Division Two Team is in fourth position and are currently 2

for 73 chasing Warnervale’s total of 185.

Ryan Marsden took 4 for 17 and was 38 not out at stumps on the first day.

Division Four had a great outright victory with the young Abel brothers starring.

Josh scored 99 runs while Zach scored 63 and 43 not out as well as taking 4 for 3 and 4 for 54.

Dylan Davis also shone taking 4 wickets for 11 runs.

Daniel Watson top scored for Doyalson’s U21s team with an undefeated 45 runs.

Junior teams resume playing on January 28.

Doyalson’s Team of the Month for December is Matt Luxford (ODLO) 184 runs, Bevan Lenders (Div 6) 93 runs, Shane McManus (Div 6) 89 runs, Stuart Lockyer (Div 1) 88 runs, Christian West (Div 1) 81 runs and 3 for 14, Joel Wilson (Div 2) 64 runs and 4 for 29, Jake Holmes (11A) 20 not out and 18 not out, Aiden Heath (12A) 17 not out and 3 for 7, Josh Abel (16A) 5 for 9, Hayden Hughes (13B) 5 for 1, Shaun Hill (Div 1) 6 for 31.

Plans are underway for a Central Coast Over 60s cricket carnival to be held at Mandalong, Awaba and Doyalson from February 26 to 29.

Teams from the Central Coast (The Cyclones),

Sydney (Sixers and Strikers), Newcastle (Taverners) and Tamworth (Gold and Blue) will compete for the trophy.
