Marlins win Sydney Major League Game 1 he Central Coast Marlins were 1 nil up in the first Grade Sydney Major League Championship series after a tough see sawing battle with the Vikings, winning 5–4 in the bottom of the tenth at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday, March 24.

T

ABL Rookie of the Year and Sydney Blue Sox pitcher, Aiden Francis started on the mound for the minor premiers, Central Coast. The Vikings started with the hero from game two of the preliminary final, Andrew Cooke, who was looking for a repeat performance in game one of the Championship series. Marlins knocked in a run early in the bottom of the first to take a 1 – 0 lead. This was wiped away immediately by the Vikings as they squared the ledger in the top half of the second innings. In the bottom half of the second innings, the Marlins found themselves with bases loaded and one out thanks to a single from Harrison and a hit by pitch followed by a walk. A sac fly from lead off Howe saw the Marlins dive back into the lead. The minor premiers didn’t have the lead for long at all as Vikings stalwart Kingman knocked in a run and we had a tied ball game again after three innings. In the fifth, the Vikings took their first lead of the game thanks to top half of the batting order. D’Antonio double, Southam and Holland singled to score D’Antonio and the Vikings lead 3 – 2. The seventh inning saw

the Marlins pounce on a tired Cooke as he was moved from the mound after a solid performance. Mitch Simon was brought on for the Vikings and he minimised the damage but two runs crossed the plate giving the lead back to the Marlins. Francis on the mound came into the top of the ninth needing three outs to give the Marlins a one-nil lead in the series. He fell just short of throwing a complete nine innings, throwing eight 2/3 innings allowing seven hits and four runs with seven strikeouts. Vikings dug deep in the top of the ninth putting pressure on the Marlins defence. The pressure paid off as the Vikings tied the ball game in the top of the ninth. Simon ensured the game would go into extras with some great pitching in the bottom of the ninth. Vikings couldn’t make a

dent in the scoreboard in the top of the tenth leaving the door open for the Marlins to wrap up the game. Central Coast took the opportunity thanks to a single to Campbell, then two intentional walks (Moanoroa and Maat) saw the Marlins with loaded bases and none out. Dan Smith put up a sac fly for Campbell to cross the plate and gave the Marlins a 5 – 4 victory and the allimportant game one of the series. The Vikings will need to pull out all stops to push the game into a decider on the back of Brad Thomas who should start for the Vikings. On the other hand, the minor premiers will be looking to wrap up the series with a second victory in game 2.

Game 2 entral Coast Marlins defeated Canterbury Vikings 6-0 on Sunday,

March 25, to claim the Sydney Major League 1st grade title. Game

Two

saw

tight

pitching early between Vikings’ major leaguer Brad Thomas and Marlins’ Olympian Craig Anderson. Marlins took the lead 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning

when Moko Moanaroa scored Michael Campbell. The pitching duel continued into the eighth inning, when Marlins scored another run to lead 2-0 off a Vikings mistake. With a 2-0 lead into the ninth inning, Marlins loaded the bases and got a bases clearing 3rd double from Moanaroa to see the Marlins extend their lead to 5-0. Dan Smith the doubled to score Moanaroa and take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Anderson, who pitched 8.1 scoreless innings of brilliant baseball, was relieved by brother Paul, who closed out the match to spark wild celebrations. The Marlins won their first ever SML 1st grade title with the victory, their 16th consecutive win to finish out the season. After winning Game One the night before 5-4, the win wrapped up the 2-0 series victory. Pitcher Craig Anderson was name Grand final series MVP with his outing.

The area would instead contain high density apartment blocks, commercial premises, and a number of small 20 by 20 metre courtyards. After attending the Plan and Village Master Plan community workshop held by Gosford Council at Umina on Tuesday, March 20, Cr Peter Freewater claimed that the meeting was used only to canvas the idea of redeveloping the free council car park into a civic place, and that it was “a blatant con job”. “The consultants tried to tell us that we need the extra commercial premises to accommodate the growth of Umina,” said Cr Freewater. “The shop owners in the audience strongly disagreed, stating that there were already vacant shops along West St and such a development would only serve to isolate them just as Erina did to Gosford,” he said. Cr Freewater also pointed out that the new LEP allowed for four storey developments in the precinct so there would be plenty of room to accommodate more shops without taking away the main car park that services the shops. Cr Freewater claimed that by the meeting’s conclusion it was very evident that the only reason it had been held was so that Council could say they had consulted the community. It was also evident that the community were not in favour of sacrificing parking for a new “civic place”, he said. Cr Freewater noted that in his personal discussions with the participants prior to the civic place being put on the agenda, they had all stressed how important they felt parking to be. “What I heard more than anything else was how important parking is to the success of the Umina shopping strip,” said Cr Freewater. “Some people even went as far to draw a big heart on the free Council car park and referred to this car park as the heart of the area.” When the consultants asked participants what sort of developments they would like to see in the new Civic Place, Cr Freewater said he pointed out that it would need to have at least as many free public parking spots as are currently available on the site. Australia and Iraq U23's Line Up at Bluetongue

he Qantas Australian U23s have completed their AFC Asian Qualifiers for the 2012 London Games campaign with a scoreless draw against the Iraq U23s at Bluetongue Stadium on Wednesday, March 14.

T

On a balmy night at the picturesque bayside arena, an experimental and developmental Qantas Australian U23s outfit couldn’t quite manage to get the better of their rivals who proved to be stubborn opposition. While both teams strung together some neat build up play through midfield, neither side could find the killer pass or strike on goal. The Qantas Australian U23s goalkeeper, Mark Birighitti, and the Iraqi goalkeeper, Jalal Hassan Hachim, had relatively trouble-free matches with much of the contest played out in midfield. The game had a lively opening with chances arriving at both ends in the first ten minutes of play. In the fifth minute, Iraq could, and perhaps should

have capitalised on a defensive error by Australia, while soon after midfielder Mustafa Amini nearly opened the door for Chris Harold. Amini’s pass was just a little too strong for Harold who worked tirelessly upfront throughout the match. Kept at bay by the new Qantas Australian U23s pairing of Brendan Hamill and Zac Anderson, the Iraq U23s were forced to shoot from range and they did so in the 17th minute. Birighitti, however, watched the shot from Ahmed Yaseen fly high of his crossbar. Chris Harold’s pace was proving a menace for the Iraqi backline and his good work drew a foul in the 36th minute of play following a pass from captain Ben Kantarovski. Unfortunately for Vidmar’s men, Dimitrios Petratos’ resulting free kick failed to trouble Hassan Hachim. Perhaps the best chance of the game came just two minutes before referee Yuichi Nishimura’s half-time whistle. Ammar Abdulhussein Ahmed fired a venomous

shot at goal, however, was thwarted by an alert Birighitti who sprung into action to save the goal bound effort. The second stanza was close to a carbon copy of the first, with both teams struggling to create many clear-cut opportunities to break the deadlock. For Qantas Australian U23s, substitute Tomas Rogic and Harold both unleashed efforts from low percentage areas but couldn’t quite force Hassan Hachim into a meaningful save, while Abdulhussein Ahmed whisked a low, curling shot past the woodwork on in the 67th minute. Unfortunately for the 2071 fans that had made the trek to Central Coast Stadium, there were no goals to witness, with referee Nishimura calling time on the game after four minutes of added play. Qantas Australian U23 head coach Aurelio Vidmar said he was pleased with the effort of his players considering the limited preparation. “I thought there were some really strong performances from our goalkeeper, back four, central midfielders tonight.

“Chris Harold also did quite a good job under very tough circumstances. “It was never going to be an easy match. “So considering we had only two light sessions and it was the first time this group had played together I thought we did a decent

job,” concluded Vidmar. However, in the final analysis, the Australian team failed to score a goal throughout the entire campaign and therefore did not win a match. Unlike the Women’s team, the Olyroos have not qualified for the 2012

Olympics. Issues over the availability of players to be selected for the squad have been partly blamed for this failure and it is expected that the FFA will hold an internal enquiry to decide on how to improve on this result in future Olympic qualification campaigns.

Liam Yokoyama, 16, in his U20 junior male division showed his solid judo skills over his opponents dominating the U60kg division by winning gold. In the senior men division, he found the going tougher but impressed his coaches by powering through with his fast ashi [foot] techniques that opened opponents for

his big throws to securing a bronze. Melinda Brown was placed in the 52kg Junior Women U20 category, and had a challenging time with some difficult judging decisions but her solid groundwork and command of submission techniques secured her a bronze medal. Caroline Hain, after an injury break, re-entered the competition side of Judo with a strong showing against some solid opponents. Her winning comeback in the 48kg junior women was only stopped in the finals, having to settle for silver. In the cadet division, she managed a bronze being

The Gillard Government has committed $28.59 million to the project along with a $10 million contribution from the NSW Government. “Today we’ve achieved another milestone in bringing a cancer centre to Gosford and that’s going to make a big difference to this community because at the moment people have to travel for cancer treatment, either in Newcastle or Sydney, with all of the additional stress and strain that means for them, at what is for them already a difficult time of their lives,” Prime Minister Gillard said. “All week in Parliament we’ve been talking about

With their already accumulated selection points Liam Yokoyama as well as his sister Angelina, joined by Caroline Hain and Melinda Brown have all been selected on the National team to compete at the Oceania Championship in Cairns in April this year.

our labor vision of the future. “Our plan is to make sure our national prosperity is used to benefit the many, not the few. “To make sure that the vast mass of Australians, working people and retirees, get to see the benefits of national prosperity, and that’s one of the things that we can say is being achieved today with this new health infrastructure.” The regional cancer centre will include a comprehensive radiation therapy and an associated cancer service facility at Gosford, and a satellite multidisciplinary clinic and day oncology unit at Wyong Hospital to provide

cancer services, including prevention and screening treatment, palliative and support care for local people. Construction began on the Cancer Centre in July last year and the project is expected to be complete by March next year. “To have seen the bunkers poured today and to know the community support that’s been behind persuading the Federal Labor government to commit $28 million to getting it off the ground is a great achievement,” Member for Robertson, Ms Deborah O’Neill said. The Government has allocated $670 million

to projects to help close the gap in outcomes for patients in regional areas and are in the process of constructing 24 Regional Cancer Centres. Eighteen of the projects are now under construction, have early works underway or are in the design phase. “Labor’s health reforms are also providing more health services closer to home, with more than 60 GP Super Clinics, including the Southern Central Coast GP Super Clinic in Robertson, more than 400 primary health care infrastructure grants, 4600 practice nurses, and telehealth consultations”, Prime Minister Gillard said.. Media Release, 23 Mar 2012 Annie Williams, Office of Julia Gillard PM

He commenced by referring to the previous day as a very black day for Gosford City. He said that as a result of Council’s unanimous decision to progress only stage one of the project to the Minister for endorsement, he visited the Central Coast Regional Development Corporation (CCRDC) to discuss the future of the project. He claimed that, at this meeting, the general manager and the chairman both informed him that they believed the project to be “dead in the water”. The mayor went on to say that stage one of the project currently lacked funding, and that he was therefore going to speak to the NSW premier in order to see whether the state government was prepared to provide financial assistance for that part of the project. He went on to criticise the media, by claiming that the project was killed by an aggressively negative campaign against it. According to the mayor, the project was put on display in order to get feedback from the public, however, some of the feedback had been extremely negative and, as a result, the entire project is in doubt. He said that he felt that some people were against all development in Gosford, and that the city

would suffer as a result, citing the failed Spurbest project as an example. The project to which the mayor was referring involved a $105 million proposal submitted to Council in early 2003, authored by property development group Spurbest. If completed, the project would have seen a six-tower mix of residential, hotel, commercial, retail and cinema buildings spread along Mann St and the waterfront, amounting to 18 storeys in a seven storey zone (scaled down from the 24 storeys which were in the initial proposal). Council opposed the development at the time on the basis of its height and proposed aesthetics. The State Government at the time, as overseen by Bob Carr, was supportive of the proposal and employed ex-Sydney City planner and Planning Institute president John McInerney to resolve the issues prior to the upcoming election. However, his efforts, in addition to those of his successors Frank Sartor and Bill Kerr, were unsuccessful. Further information was sought from CCRDC but at the time of going to press a response had not been received Cec Bucello, 14 Mar 2012

he 2012 Central Coast Cup kicks off over the Easter long weekend with all ten clubs primed to hurtle down the players’ race in hot pursuit of September glory.

Good Friday will see the Premiers Berkley Vale play host to the Brett Kenny coached Entrance Tigers and the Panthers will be hoping to commence their title defense with a reversal of the recent trial loss to the men in orange. Also, on this most sacred of Fridays, the Sharks head down Terrigal Drive to tackle Erina. Arch rivals Umina and Woy Woy clash just in behind the sand dunes at Col Gooley Oval on Saturday in what promises to be a tremendous struggle. Both teams will be looking to build on their top five placings of last winter and a first up win will be keenly sought. Woy Woy have added former Souths NRL

threequarter Matt Riddle, along with Sea Eagles Toyota Cup backrower Beau Bovis to their roster, however, these gains are offset somewhat by the loss of Chris Hyde who’s huge

contribution in 2011 enabled the hooker to share the competitions Player of the Year Award with Warriors half Pat Murphy. Hyde, has moved south to play NSW Cup with the

North Sydney Bears, will have his spot at dummy half taken by 30-year-old Matt Wakefield, a Coogee junior who has joined the Roosters from the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Umina have shown good form during the pre season trials, accounting for Kincumber four tries to two before overrunning an undermanned Toukley nine tries to nil. The match up shapes as the feature game of the opening round and as with all clashes between these neighboring clubs the physical nature of the struggle will demand that convenience stores from Deepwater to Ettalong register a sharp spike in Radox sales as battered bodies crave traditional hot tub succor come Saturday night. Peninsula beer sales may also garner a gentle northward nudge. On Easter Sunday, the Ourimbah club have dedicated their home game against Kincumber to the memory of life member Daisy Blackwell who passed away last September after magnificently serving the black and whites for 56 years. The Magpies, last year’s Grand Finalists, finished

their on field preparations with a heavy loss to Emu Plains last Saturday while Kincumber, under new coach Shannon Woodley, are aiming to be the big improvers of the new season following an injury plagued 2011. Competition stalwart Jade Mason, who played a record 201 first grade games for Woy Woy before heading across The Rip Bridge last season, is the leader of the Colts pack. His coach said: “He is the senior member of our team, showing the young players the way.” “Jade plays front row and you can’t help but admire this man.” The final game of the round sees Toukley pitted against Northern Lakes, the new look Warriors side brim full of confidence following an impressive trial win over the Tigers. News coming up through the grades. U18s duo Jayden Olivieri at hooker and halfback Lachlan Howard were blooded in the victory over The Entrance with both lads acquitting themselves well. Toukley have lost their fullback and 2011 Rookie of the Year, Matt Craig, to Wyong and hooker Jye Newton has linked up with The Entrance’s Bundy Cup side, however, with a host of exciting local juniors including Sam Cogger, Mitch Stokes, Peter Gafa and Nathan Akers flanking the experience of Steve Berryman and John Dean, the Hawks are building nicely toward the new season. A tough late season draw which included a mid week clash with unbeaten competition leaders Souths (lost 6-22) followed three days later by a trip to Parramatta (lost 14-32) ultimately proved too taxing for the talented Coastie squad who finish up this weekend against the Raiders at Woy Woy. Ballangarry crossed for a hat-trick of tries, including a match clinching intercept in the dying moments as the Centurions edged out the nonplussed Eels 20-18.

In the U14 division, Neeson Naidoo of Wyong got off to a slow start to the event, which saw him take his first loss of the year; however, he dominated his competition from that point onwards. He threw his state team members with a variety of techniques, all of which were executed with technical smoothness. After winning all NSW selection events, including

the State titles, Neeson is now seeded number one in his division. In the U12 division, Daniel Villani of New Lambton was fired up and in top form. He dominated from the onset with a textbook variety of throwing skills, including footsweeps, hip throws and shoulder throws. He was never seriously threatened in any of his bouts and even tried some techniques he was still learning. As the last junior NSW state squad selection event prior to the 2012 Nationals, in addition to providing the opportunity for final preparations, the results of the Shoalhaven Open help determine the relative standings of its competitors.

cean and Umina Beaches have prevailed against six formidable destinations to host the NSW Junior, Masters and Open NSW Surf Life Saving Championships in 2013 and 2014.

O

It was announced by NSW Surf Life Saving that Umina and Ocean Beach would host the event for the next two years, following the relevant Council approvals and the signing of formal agreements The event runs over seven days and encompasses two consecutive weekends in March. The event is expected to attract over 8000 competitors. Central Coast Tourism’s chief executive officer Mr Ollie Philpot said being the host destination for such a high profile event provides substantial benefits for the region. “This world-class event will no doubt catapult the Central Coast as a preeminent destination for a beach holiday and a serious contender for other State and National events. Overall, the event is expected to inject an estimated $36 million into the local economy over the two years that Ocean and Umina Beaches have been locked in to host this event. “With an influx of thousands of competitors and their families, our local tourism operators and other businesses should see this as a bonanza for their business during a traditionally off-peak period,” continued Philpot. Central Coast Tourism’s business and tourism events manager Mr Chris

King said he would be working closely with both Gosford Council and Wyong Council to deliver a successful event which would be key in leveraging the profile of the Central Coast as a host destination for other State and National Championships. Mayor of Gosford Cr Laurie Maher said that hosting the Championships would provide a great boost for tourism and small business in Umina Beach and surrounding areas. “With an influx of visitors before, during and after the competition period, businesses in the area will benefit from a major increase in customers. “Competitors, their families and spectators from around NSW will be utilising short term accommodation and numerous other services during their stay. “It is anticipated that the Championships will generate an estimated $18 million [per year] for the host City, an exciting prospect for the Umina Beach area. “Surf Life Savers from across the state will be able to see firsthand the significant investment that Council has made into infrastructure to support beach safety and the maintenance of the beautiful beaches we enjoy in the Gosford Local Government Area,” said Cr Maher. Gosford Council’s manager of open space and leisure services Mr Phil Moore said Council would be providing in-kind support during the event. “In partnership with Central Coast Tourism, NSW and Central Coast Surf Life Saving, Council Officers will be working to

provide a safe and enjoyable event for competitors and spectators. “Council will be providing a number of beach vehicles, fencing, lighting and access services for the event, with Central Coast tourism providing assistance to spectators and competitors in securing accommodation and other services,” said Mr Moore. Surf Life Saving NSW president Mr Tony Haven said Umina and Ocean

Beach would provide a world-class venue for the state’s premier surf sports event, which attracts more than 8000 competitors. “Gosford City Council has been very supportive of this event and the location is ideal, close to the majority of competitors, with great accommodation options and easy access. “The facilities available to competitors and the overall support

from Gosford City Council were major factors in selecting Umina and Ocean Beach to host of the event ahead of six other Councils who expressed interest in hosting the event. “Both clubs also have a wealth of experience in conducting successful surf events on a large scale, with the 2005 Championships held here at Umina and Ocean Beach one of our most successful to date with over 800 entrants,” said Mr Haven.

Cycling initiatives awarded

Beginners badminton course by Alan Monroe

entral Coast B a d m i n t o n Academy (CCBA) is commencing the first daytime course for adult beginners at Niagara Park Youth Centre on Tuesday, April 24, with a “Come and try day” held on Tuesday, April 3.

C

The eight week course is designed to take beginners and provide them with the badminton skills to enjoy playing games, and is being run by experienced coaches. At the same time, they will obtain exercise while having fun and friendship. “There has not been any daytime badminton available

on the Central Coast before and we believe there are many shift workers, mums and others who cannot get out at night and who would love to get some exercise and have fun doing it,” said CCBA head coach Alan Monroe. “Our motto is ‘Learn a Skill, Have Fun, Get Fit, Meet People’, and coming to play badminton is a great way of doing just that. “People get bored on a treadmill or walking machine in the gym and eventually stop going. “Playing badminton is a great way to keep your exercise interesting and fun.” CCBA will be running more advanced courses

during the year and also starting a daytime competition, which will be open to all to join. Monroe has been a coach for over 30 years, with Level 2 coaching qualifications, and has worked with State squads in two states. He is currently vice president of Badminton NSW and is a coach instructor. Although not a wellknown sport in Australia, badminton is an Olympic and Commonwealth Games sport and is growing in popularity, with NSW seeing a good increase in its registered player numbers over the last few years.

Point Clare win PSSA Cricket Round 1

Woy Woy Wolves U14 baseball team win Champion of Champions

by Steven Rayner

fter two washouts, the Point Clare Public School cricket team finally made it onto the paddock to play their first match in the PSSA knockout against Woy Woy Public School and won in a dominating performance.

A

The most pleasing aspect of the game was the good sportsmanship and exemplary behaviour displayed by both schools. Point Clare got off to a good start by winning the toss and electing to field. A superb bowling and fielding effort saw Woy Woy dismissed for 23 runs. Mitchell Wood opened the bowling and combined well with Lachlan Donohoe to take the first wicket. In fact, Lachlan took three

superb catches fielding at slip. Ethan Curtin-Edwards also took a great catch in the covers. The bowling figures for Point Clare were Mitch Wood one wicket for two runs, Lachlan Donohoe zero for seven runs, Ethan Curtin –Edwards two wickets for three runs, Aengus Kenny three wickets for five runs, Graham Porter one wicket for four runs and Aaron Bamforth one wicket for one run. When it was Point Clare’s turn to bat, the team’s captains, Aaron Bamforth and Lachlan Donohoe, showed their leadership skills by warming up the opening batsmen as well as offering support and advice to the younger players. Mitchell Wood and Gabe Williams opened the batting. Mitchell was caught out for eight runs and Gabe was

retired, also for eight runs. Lachlan Donohoe was next into bat and although he faced a few early deliveries that hit his pads, he went on to score 17 runs before he was retired. Graham Porter then came into bat and scored a quick and skilful 20 runs before retiring. Nathan Cop Conrow was next in, scoring six runs followed by Jack Boyd and Sam Lappan who both concentrated hard and performed well for the team. Aaron Bamforth and Ethan Curtin Edwards were next to bat, both retiring for 14 and six respectively. Aengus Kenny and Jackson Mitchell came in to bat for the last over and played well. After 25 overs, Point Clare were four out for 111 runs.

he finest club teams in NSW competed in day two of the Champion of Champions on Sunday, April 1, at Kelso Park Milperra.

T

This competition saw the minor premiers from all the top junior Baseball associations from NSW compete. In the U14s competition, teams from Ryde, Manly, Cronulla and Central Coast battled it out for a grand final spot and a chance to become the best club in the 2011-12 summer baseball season. All four sides had victories in their first round games with the Woy Woy Wolves earning a spot in the semi finals by defeating Castle Hill Knights 8 -3 the previous week. The Dragons from Manly

cruised into the grand final and ran away with a comfortable 14 – 1 victory against North Ryde in the first semi final of the day. In the second semi final things were much closer. The Giants from Cronulla looked to be in cruise control taking a 5 – 0 lead at the half way stage of the game. The Central Coast minor premiers, the Woy Woy Wolves needed something special in the back half of the game and they certainly found it in the fourth innings as they took a 6 – 5 lead thanks to six runs crossing the plate. The Wolves cemented this lead and took the game away from the Giants and scored two more runs in the fifth innings to take an 8 – 5 victory and a spot in the big one. The grand final was a tight affair as the opening

three frames produced blanks on the scoreboard. In the top of the fourth the Wolves began to howl as they scored eight runs to break the hearts of the young Dragons side. The Wolves completed the victory with an additional two runs in the fifth to round the score out to 10 – 0 and claim the U14 Champion of Champions title for 2011-12. Coach Russell Pearce said: “I could not be prouder of the way these kids played the entire season.” “They are simply brilliant and thoroughly deserve the title of the best U14 club team in NSW. “To win this tournament the weekend following the Central Coast Marlins first grade win in the Sydney Major League shows the baseball talent coming from the Central Coast is of the highest standard.”

Mariners lose first leg of major semi final entral Coast Mariners were defeated 2-0 by Brisbane Roar in the first leg of their Hyundai A-League major semi-final duel played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, March 31.

C

An eighth minute goal by Henrique combined with a late effort from midfielder Erik Paartalu did the damage for the home team, handing Ange Postecoglou’s side the advantage heading into the second leg of the tie on Sunday, April 8, at Bluetongue Stadium. Both teams had clashes in the AFC Champions League to contend with before they meet at Gosford’s idyllic bayside arena. The Mariners hosted Seongnam Ilwha Chunma of the K-League, while Roar travelled away to play Ulsan Hyundai of the same domestic competition in South Korea. Mariners’ boss Graham Arnold said he believed the two teams’ respective schedules could play a telling factor in the second leg, with the yellow and navy spending a full week at their home base while Roar made the long journey north.

“We’ve got 24 hours more recovery than them and a lot less travelling so hopefully we can use that to our advantage,” Arnold said post match. “It’s a tough trip into South Korea … and back again. “They’re going to get tired, they’re going to get weary. “I could tell that some of the mistakes that players were making were down to fatigue, not technique. “I’ve had enough experience in the past, two-nil score lines are dangerous, and we’re going home back to Bluetongue and we’re very positive that we can turn it around,” he said. After a week of intense build-up, the highly anticipated fixture started at a cracking pace with the Mariners enjoying the first opportunity of the encounter. The crafty Tomas Rogic did well to release striker Bernie Ibini, however, while Ibini managed to turn Matt Smith in the box, his left-footed effort lacked the power necessary to seriously trouble Michael Theoklitos. Just five minutes later, Roar were awarded a slightly contentious penalty when defender Josh Rose was adjudged to have fouled Henrique in the area.

Replays showed Rose may have indeed got a touch on ball as he attempted to clear the danger, however, referee Strebre Delovski saw enough in the challenge to award Roar the chance to score from 12-yards. Mathew Ryan’s reputation grows by the game for his amazing ability to perform heroics between the sticks, and so it was again that the keeper underlined his class by stopping Henrique’s shot from the spot. Leaping to his left, Ryan pushed the Brazilian’s low effort to safety. Unfortunately for Graham Arnold’s men, Roar would take less than a minute to fashion an opportunity from which they would take the lead. Thomas Broich’s corner found the head of Mohamed Adnan, and while the Bahraini defenders’ effort was stopped on the line, no one could prevent Henrique from poking the rebound into the back of the net from close range. Just four minutes after Henrique’s strike, Ange Postecoglou’s team nearly doubled their advantage. Instrumental in the opener, Broich found Albanian attacker Besart Berisha with an incisive pass. Berisha attempted to

round Ryan, and for a split second looked set to net. However, Ryan somehow managed to claw the ball back into his possession from behind Berisha, averting the extremely imminent danger. Shortly after Ryan was called into action again, and again came up with a series of important interventions. First, the 19-year-old thwarted an Ivan Franjic effort on the angle, and only a minute later managed to tip a stinging Berisha drive from the edge of the box over the bar. The Mariners had one half chance through Ibini close to half time to restore parity to the match, however, the strikers drive took a deflection and as such lacked the power necessary to pass Theoklitos. Central Coast looked a more threatening force after the interval and almost found a leveller just four minutes into the second 45. Right-back Pedj Bojic’s accurate cross found Rogic, with the silky number 17’s header smartly saved by Theoklitos before Adnan bashed the ball up field. Freshening up his attack following the tireless efforts of exciting prospects Rogic and Ibini, Arnold brought on the experience of Daniel McBreen and Troy Hearfield.

While the yellow and navy continued to look threatening in their search for what could have been a crucial away goal, Brisbane would ultimately score a second through Paartalu. Breaking down the left side, the dangerous Broich cut the ball back for the onrushing former Gretna FC player Paartalu, who slid the ball past Ryan from the top of the box in the 86th minute. “We had a wonderful chance for one-one that could have turned the game,” Arnold added. “That’s the difference, they took their chances. “It was their night tonight.” Arnold also used the post match press conference as an opportunity to implore the Central Coast public to make Bluetongue Stadium a cauldron of yellow and navy support on Sunday. Knowing the difference a packed, partisan home crowd can make, Arnold said “All Central Coast people, don’t stay home and watch it on TV. Come and watch it at the ground, support the boys.”

Mariners

Mariners take out Premier’s Plate entral Coast Mariners have claimed their second Hyundai A-League Premier’s Plate courtesy of a 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium, New Zealand on Sunday, March 25.

C

On loan, Heart of Midlothian hitman John Sutton’s first goal in a Mariners kit, combined with Bernie Ibini’s seventh strike of the season ensured Central Coast gave Brisbane Roar no chance of catching them in the race for first place when they meet Gold Coast United later in the afternoon. While an 80th minute goal from Leo Bertos raised anxiety levels in the ‘Cake Tin’ for the final 10 minutes of play, Graham Arnold’s men showed their maturity and class to keep their cool and frustrate the Phoenix who kept attacking to referee Strebre Delovski’s final whistle. The match was an open affair from start to finish. However, the hallmark

of the first 45, until Sutton’s 45th minute header, was both teams’ inability to fire past either goalkeeper. On several occasions, custodians Mathew Ryan and Mark Paston stood tall to make telling interventions and keep their opponents at bay. For the Mariners, there was no better example of this than in the 26th minute when desperate defending thwarted three Phoenix efforts. Ryan reacted sharply to save from Paul Ifill’s strong effort on the angle, before Patrick Zwaanswijk blocked a shot from close range. With the ball ricocheting out of the box, Ryan bounced back to his feet to catch Chris Greenacre’s shot from outside the area. Six minutes later Paston proved his worth with an important stop. Having whizzed past Ben Sigmund with his pace, Ibini went one-on-one with the internationally experienced ‘keeper, however had his shot well saved. Just two minutes later it was Ryan again who was called into action.

With Greenacre bursting through, the Mariners number one stood tall to again disappoint the healthy and vociferous Phoenix gallery. Just before the break, the Mariners took the lead. Breaking down the right side, Ibini slid a wellweighted pass to midfielder Oliver Bozanic. Bozanic neatly lifted the ball onto the head of Sutton, with the English striker perfectly nodding the ball over Paston and into the back of the net. Both teams returned from the interval showing impetus and intent to attack and it was the home team who created the first opportunity of the second stanza. Vince Lia whizzed across the face of goal which only needed a touch from the onrushing Greenacre to level proceedings. Unfortunately for Phoenix, Lia’s cross evaded everyone. Soon after, the Mariners doubled their advantage. Bursting through midfield, the impressive Michael McGlinchey provided a telling, accurate pass to

Umina Beach Men’s Shed Inc. A PLACE FOR BLOKES TO MEET

Ibini. Making no mistake from close range, Ibini poked the ball past Paston much to the delight of Mariners fans in the Stadium and gathered around television screens worldwide. Playing their normal game founded on defence and possession, the Mariners found themselves in the ascendency for much of the remainder of the second stanza. Indeed, the yellow and navy nearly extended their lead in the 59th minute when Sutton was denied by a spectacular save by Paston after a corner from Bozanic. And, nerves could of began to jangle in the 80th minute when Leo Bertos’ free-kick from range flew into the back of the net to bring the Phoenix within one. But, sticking to their game plan and showing the character and determination for which they are renowned, the Mariners dug deep to rebuff a number of late Wellington attacking raids. Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold was understandably

delighted with the result post-match, and his first piece of silverware with the club. “I am so delighted, and proud of the players and what they’ve achieved,” he said. “I think a lot of people would have discarded us as any chance to win the Premiership this season after last year, but the character to bounce back has made this success all the more worthwhile. “The team has been through a lot, losing Matty Simon and Rostyn Griffiths has not made it easy. “But the culture and character within the group is so strong. “I’m also so thankful to my staff Phil Moss, John Crawley, Andrew Clark and the entire medical and support staff. “That we’ve still got 22 fit players with Champions League as well as A-League is amazing.

“AFC Champions League is no easy task”, says Arnold

Arnold is Coach of the Season

entral Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said he believes the equation is simple when it comes to working out what his team needs to emerge from a tightly contested Group G of the 2012 AFC Champions League.

C

entral Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold has been named the 201112 Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) Hyundai A-League Coach of the Season.

C

Presented with his award by PFA Executive member and Central Coast Mariners captain Alex Wilkinson at a media event at Soccer5s, Tuggerah, the astute Arnold was overwhelmingly selected as the A-League Coach of the Season by PFA members across all 10 Hyundai A-League teams. Arnold is the fourth coach to be honoured as coach of the season by the PFA. He follows Ange Postecoglou (Brisbane Roar 2010/11), Viteslav Lavicka (Sydney FC 2009/10), and Aurelio Vidmar (Adelaide United 2008/09) as recipients of the award. Central Coast Mariners, who were confirmed as Hyundai A-League Premiers following their away win at Wellington on Sunday, March 25, have maintained a high level of performance under Arnold’s guidance both domestically and also internationally this season. PFA chief executive Brendan Schwab said from Melbourne: “The continued

success of the Central Coast Mariners despite their heartbreaking loss in last year’s Championship decider shows how Graham and his playing squad have been able to overcome many of the obstacles put in their way.” “It is even more to the credit of Graham that the side has continued its success despite coming from the A-League smallest market, and the need to transfer key players out of the club. “Despite these issues, Graham has successfully developed a number of

young players, many of whom should become the mainstay of future Socceroo teams. “I wish Graham and his club the best in both the forthcoming A-League finals and the Asian Champions League,” Schwab concluded. After being presented with his award, a surprised, yet elated Arnold said: “I’m humbled to win this award.” “Being recognised by the players as the top coach this season speaks volumes for what we are doing here. “(But) I can’t speak highly enough of the players.

“I think I’ve said many times before that I come to training with a smile on my face, and I turn up to work this these guys who are not only very good footballers, but are wonderful human beings. “I haven’t had one problem with one player since I’ve been here, it’s definitely a joy.” Arnold also praised his staff, a group of men who have contributed greatly to the club’s success this term. “Of course I’m very, very proud of the players but also my staff,” he said. “Phil Moss, my assistant coach, takes a lot of pressure off me and does a wonderful job. “Andrew Clark for me is the best football fitness coach in Australia by far, and John Crawley is the best goalkeeper coach.”

At Monday’s official prematch press conference, Arnold said he thinks two wins from three home matches, combined with a couple of away draws will be enough to see his team secure a place in the knock-out stages of Asia’s premier club competition. “It’s a very tight group,” Arnold said. “It’s important we try to win our home games starting with tomorrow night [Tuesday, April 3] .” “Away games are tough. “My thoughts have always been that you’ve got to win two out of your three home games and try and pinch a couple of draws away from home.” Having already secured draws against China’s Tianjin Teda (away) and Japan’s Nagoya Grampus (home), Tuesday’s match (Central Coast Grandstand went to press earlier that day) at Central Coast Stadium against the K-League’s Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma provides the opportunity for Arnold’s team to substantially enhance their chances of emerging from the section should they triumph. Indeed, with all four teams in Group G locked on two points after two games, a win could see the Mariners on top of the Group as Nagoya face the difficult prospect of securing maximum points at the Tianjin Teda Football Stadium in China the same night.

But Arnold knows it will be no easy task, with Seongnam possessing both class on the pitch and a long, proud history. “From what I’ve seen on DVD especially, they’re getting stronger,” he said. “Obviously the competition (the K-League) has just started over there, they’re getting stronger by the game so we’re expecting a very, very tough game tomorrow night. “I have watched both of their AFC Champions League games as well as a (K-League) round. “(They have) two very good Brazilians in Hevertinho and Everton Santos, and a very good striker in Jovancic up front. “It’s only two years ago that they won the Champions League title, so they’re a very, very good side and they’ve got a great history that goes with them. “I’ve had enough experience with my work with the national team to know how strong South Korea football is and also how strong South Korean club football is.” Meanwhile, Mariners midfield general John Hutchinson said the team was extremely up and excited for the clash despite having played just two days ago against Brisbane Roar in the first leg of the Hyundai A-League major semi-final. “It’s another tough challenge for us as a club,” Hutchinson said. “We only played a couple of days ago and we had to travel back from Brisbane, but I’m looking forward to the game personally and I want to play. “As a footballer you want to play in these big games. “It’s the highest club level that we can get and I know all the players want to play in it.”

Mariners draw with Nagoya Grampus n inspired Central Coast Mariners team drew 1-1 with J-League giants Nagoya Grampus at Central Coast Stadium in match day 2 of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday, March 21.

A

Patrick Zwaanswijk’s 28th minute header helped earn the Mariners the deserved draw, which also saw Graham Arnold’s side remain undefeated in this year’s version of Asia’s premier club competition. Japanese international defender Markus Tulio Tanaka had given Dragan Stojkovic’s men the lead in the 21st minute after he poked home following a dubious free-kick awarded on the edge of the penalty area. As he has done many times in Australia’s top flight, Zwaanswijk rose highest to nod past Grampus custodian Seigo Narazaki to score his seventh goal in all competitions this campaign. Gosford’s idyllic bayside arena was the perfect stage for a highly entertaining match between the AFC Champions League Group G rivals. Despite both goals

coming in the first 30 minutes of play, the remaining 60 minutes of the game proved fantastic fare as both teams looked to gain their first win of Asia’s top club tournament in 2012. Troy Hearfield, Tomas Rogic, Oliver Bozanic and Mustafa Amini all forced the highly experienced Grampus ‘keeper Narazaki into sublime saves to keep the score level. Meanwhile, Mariners custodian Mathew Ryan was as alert as he frustrated Shohei Abe with a spectacular diving save in the 37th minute. Largely untroubled in the second stanza, Ryan looked poised and confident all match on his home patch. After the game, Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold said he was delighted with his teams’ effort against one of Asia’s most respected football clubs. “I cannot be prouder,” he said. “We had four or five kids out there, 18, 19-year-olds and they were superb. “We challenged the kids tonight and they came through with flying colours.” Arnold also shared with the media gathered at the post match press conference his personal desire to excel in the AFC Champions League. “Adelaide were brilliant

last night and we wanted to put on a good performance to show everyone why we’re sitting where we are on the league and that we’re worth it,” he said. “It mattered to me because people talk about the A-League but we’re playing against a 50 million dollar team and want to prove something. “We had probably the best chance of the game (to win it). “Fantastic performance.” Match Details Central Coast Mariners 1 (Zwaanswijk 28’) Nagoya Grampus 1 (Tulio Tanaka 21’) Central Coast Mariners: 1. “An extraordinary experience…” — Cate Blanchett Academy Award-winning actress

Celestial Beauty, 2011.

ShenYun2012.com HEN YUN—it’s a grand production. Every year we start fresh. Every detail matters. Our goal? Not just another show. We take our craft beyond the boundaries of performing arts as you know it.

S What Does “Shen Yun” Mean? CHINESE IS AN IMMENSELY rich language. Many characters contain deep inner meanings and nuances that are difficult to translate into English, such as those in our very name: Shen Yun. The character Shen (Ṙ) is a general term for “divine” or “divine being.” Chinese cosmology, in fact, is replete with hundreds of deities, Buddhas, and Taoist immortals who play different roles and color the canon of Chinese history with thousands of rich stories. This feeling of the divine plays into the second character of our name: Yun (ㅥ). Its meaning is far greater than what literal translation can capture. “Yun” refers to the overall manner of a dancer, a dancer’s style, and the meaning behind his or her movements. So, when we put “Shen” and “Yun” together: it’s about the grace, compassion, and sublime beauty of heavenly realms that are shown through the subtlest expressions and gestures of our dancers. That is the essence of the name “Shen Yun.”

A Shen Yun show is a fusion of classical arts with modern appeal. As one audience member put it, “It’s like a fashion show, opera, concert, and dance performance all rolled into one.” Difficult? Yes. Impossible? No. Our passion motivates us to bring all these elements together into one extraordinary experience. Classical Chinese dance lies at the heart of our performances. The dancers—with what some have called “limitless bodies”—turn an intensely difficult art form into something beautiful and effortless. China’s 5,000 years of civilization provide an endless source of inspiration. The choreographers work closely with the composers to recreate ancient stories and legends, or convey an aspect of the culture, through short pieces that last no more than a few minutes. Our graphic artists, meanwhile, use advanced digital technology to produce stunning animated backdrops that correspond precisely to each dance. After seeing the show, one audience member marveled, “This production… is nothing short of a miracle.”

Premier League kicks off

by Alistair Kennedy

he weekend of March 31 to April 1 saw round one of the CountryNet Mens Premier League commence.

T

Berkeley Vale opened the competition with a 2-1 win over Umina in the grand final replay at Pluim Park, Lisarow. Defending premiers, Umina, took the lead midway through the first half with a goal to Matt Hogan before Berkeley Vale struck back with goals to Troy Mumford in the 65th minute and Scott Imberger in the 78th. Umina were denied a late equaliser when they struck the post with the last kick of the game. March Falzon’s two goals in the final minutes of the following match have seen Wyoming pull off a remarkable draw in their opening match against East Gosford. In a typically hard-fought local derby, Wyoming had trailed for most of the match. Daniel McBrian gave East Gosford an early lead with a powerful volley, before the Rams skipper Brent Demery looked to have sealed the result with a scrambled goal just 12 minutes from full-

time. Falzon’s last-minute heroics ended a busy weekend for the star Wyoming midfielder who was married on Friday but deferred his honeymoon to play in the match. Killarney District, who are expected to be serious contenders for the 2012 premiership, began their season confidently, with a 3-1 win over Kanwal. Chris Archer opened the scoring in the 30th minute, with Ryan Gibson doubling the lead in the 55th minute. Kanwal hit back shortly afterwards with a goal to Damien Lobb, before Gibson settled the contest by finding the net for the second time. Doyalson has defeated Avoca 2-1 in the battle of the newly-promoted Premier League teams. Jeremy Diamond gave the northern club the lead midway through the first half with Will Reid doubling the lead in the 60th minute. Avoca hit back right on full-time with a consolation penalty goal to Michael Simmons. In the final match of the weekend, Budgewoi were stretched by the young Entrance team.

Coached by former Newcastle Jets A-League player, Steve Eagleton, the team eventually ran out to score twice in the second half. They closed the game out 2-0 winners, with secondhalf goals to Peter Hamill and Jai Kelly. Wyoming has taken out the inaugural CountryNet Fair Play award by being the only team to not receive a yellow or red card during the opening round. The club will receive a new laptop computer donated by the Premier League sponsor CountryNet IT Solutions of West Gosford. CountryNet CEO, Simon Totonjian, will present the laptop to Wyoming FC president, Kevin Lee, at Pluim Park next Monday. The Premier League competition will now break for Easter with the second round to be played on Sunday, April 15. The Division One competition will commence on Easter Monday (9 April) using the same format as the Premier League with all games to be played at Pluim Park.

Coast Cup Finals decided B

by Alistair Kennedy

erkeley Vale has taken out the 2012 Hill and Co Lawyers Men’s Central Coast Cup Final with a 2-0 win over Budgewoi at Pluim Park, Lisarow.

Berkeley Vale took the lead in the first minute of the match through in-form striker, Scott Imberger. The game remained in the balance until the 89th minute, when Brenton Olzomer converted from the penalty spot. The penalty occurred when Imberger was brought down by Mitchell Marlin in the box. Earlier, Budgewoi had missed the chance to

equalise with their own penalty. It was Berkeley Vale’s second Cup success in three years and their fourth final in five years. The inaugural Reserve Grade Central Coast Cup proved to be a repeat of the 2011 Premier League Reserve Grade grand final with Wyoming defeating Berkeley Vale 1-0. The match was scoreless at full-time and looked headed for a penalty shootout when Daniel Edwards scored with less than two minutes remaining in the second half of extra time. Gosford City continued its domination of the local competition with a 4-1 win

Tim Cahill Coaching Clinic comes to the Coast entral Coast junior soccer players will have the opportunity of a lifetime in May when Socceroos’ star Tim Cahill visits the Coast to run a three day coaching clinic.

C

The Tim Cahill Coaching Clinic encompasses the Tim Cahill Coaching Way which focuses on five key elements, technique and tactics, health and fitness, positive thinking, enjoyment and social wellbeing. The Central Coast Academy of Sport is pleased to be partnered with the Tim Cahill Coaching Clinic and CCAS media manager, Warwick Whitmore, said it would be a unique opportunity for the junior soccer players of the Central Coast. “It’s not often that young sportspeople have the opportunity to meet and train under a sportsperson of

Tim’s calibre or reputation. “The Central Coast Academy of Sport is dedicated to developing local athletes within their chosen pursuits, so linking with the Tim Cahill Coaching Clinic was a logical decision when the opportunity arose”, said Whitmore. The clinic will be held across three days from May 18-20, and utilise Central Coast venues such as Bluetongue Stadium and ADCOCK Park. Cahill, who is a star player for the Everton Football Club in the English Premier League and also for the Australian Socceroos, said that the three day clinic would aim to help aspiring soccer players unlock their potential. “I am really passionate about trying to develop soccer in Australia and give kids a vision and goal to help them see what they can achieve. “The main objective

Killarney take top spot in SeaFM WPL by Val Bridge

ll fixtures in round one of the SeaFM Women’s Premier League were played out at Pluim Park, Lisarow on Sunday, April 1, which saw debutantes, Umina, and a newly promoted Kariong both playing WPL for the first time.

A

Last year’s AAW1 premiers, Kariong Cougars, met with an invigorated Avoca Sharks outfit who were seeking to improve on their 2011 campaign. The Sharks found themselves 4-0 down at half time with Kariong striker, Kayla Vanderfeld, tearing the Avoca defence apart. The Sharks made a spirited effort in the second half but nonetheless saw many chances go astray. Avoca captain and left midfielder, Biddy Holstein, proved dangerous to Kariong every time she made a run on the left wing. Holstein provided several opportunities from crossed balls into the Kariong 18 yard box in an attempt to make the score more respectable, but the Kariong defence proved too strong thwarting most of the Avoca attack and eventually winning the game 7-1. This puts Kariong at second place on the ladder behind Killarney Vale. Debutantes, Umina, took on an experienced Wyoming side and played some class football, but eventually lost 3-0. Traditional WPL rivals Gosford and Doyalson fought it out, with Gosford once again getting the win but not without a valiant effort by Doyalson to turn the tables. NSW Rugby Union Country Championships by Larry Thomson

Coast dominates Far North Coast he Central Coast opened its 2012 campaign in the NSW Country Rugby Championships with a pleasing win against Far North Coast at Lismore on Saturday, March 24.

T

The final score was 33 points to 15, after a halftime score line of 16 points to eight in favour of the Central Coast. The first 20 minutes was an even affair, during which each side enjoyed periods in which they dominated but could not completely convert this playing dominance into points on the scoreboard. The Central Coast set pieces were good with a strong scrum and consistently winning the ball at lineout. Central Coast went to an early lead with a penalty goal and continued to dominate the scoreboard from this point. Winger Josh McGlynn crossed for a good team try and, with the conversion by fullback Matt Maloney, the visitors had jumped away to a good start. Matt Maloney scored another two penalty goals, which took the Central Coast to a 16 points to three lead at

the halftime break. It was a battle with both packs of forwards involved in a war of attrition. The Central Coast had several good players in the first half. Winger Josh McGlynn and centre Kane Burn were everywhere in attack, and they were well supported by No.8 Brett Marchant and flanker David Crawford who both seemed to be all over the paddock. Others to play well in combination were the locks Adam Winter and Peter Steele, while five-eight Mitch Graham controlled the backline to perfection. Far North Coast made several good raids in the opening minutes of the second half but the Central Coast team displayed some excellent defence to keep them out. The Far North Coast team were very committed and both teams were able to cross for converted tries, however, at the midway point of the second half, Central Coast had maintained the lead by 23 points to 15. This remained the score until the final ten minutes of the match. The game opened up at the end, when Central Coast scored a converted try and kicked a final penalty goal to score 10 points in the final stages of the match. The Central Coast Colts had a disappointing loss to the Far North Coast, defeated 33 points to five.

The team got away to a very slow start and were down by 26 points to nil at the halftime break. Despite a commendable effort in the second half, in which the Central Coast were only outscored by two points, it was all too late.

On Saturday, they were defeated by Newcastle Hunter by 37 points to three. It was a very even tussle in the first 20 minutes of the match and both teams gave it their all and had chances to score points. Central Coast was under severe pressure in the early stages of the match when Newcastle kicked a penalty goal in the opening minutes to take a three points to nil lead. However, it was the Central Coast team who then played some excellent rugby but the good play was not rewarded with points. Central Coast missed two vital penalty goals before winger Matt Maloney kicked

a penalty goal in the 25th minute to even the score at three all. The Central Coast scrum was performing well in the set pieces but the game was very open at this stage. Newcastle took a real advantage in the match when they scored a try right on halftime. The try took Newcastle to an eight points to three lead at the halftime break. Newcastle started the second half like a house on fire but it was excellent defence that kept them out. Newcastle did kick a further penalty in the fourth minute to get to 11-3. In the 10th minute, Newcastle crossed for their second try and the conversion of this try had increased their lead to 18 points to three. Newcastle was playing well and had much of the ball and was controlling proceedings. Despite this dominance, several Central Coast players were making a great effort. Emile Thomas, Brett Cunningham, Dave Crawford and Josh McGlynn were all playing well but the Central Coast was unable to make any clear breaks and were frustrated by good Newcastle defence. The Central Coast was playing spirited rugby but nothing was going to plan. Newcastle were able to post a further three tries in the final 20 minutes of the

match to go even further ahead. They were able to post a comfortable 37 points to three win. It was a most disappointing result for the players and coaching staff and the loss had placed Central Coast into the third-fourth playoff the following day against Central North. Central Coast: 3 Matt Maloney, one penalty goal Lost to Newcastle: 37, five tries, three conversions and two penalty goals

Close game results in disappointing loss he Central Coast Rugby Union team was defeated by Central North in the Playoff match in the NSW Country Rugby Championships on Sunday, April 1, with a final score of 2619.

T

Central Coast started the game well and dominated the early stages. Central Coast was totally in control and had scored two tries within the first 10 minutes. One try was converted and Central Coast had jumped to an early 12-0 lead.

However, this dominance was slowly worn away and Central North worked themselves back into the game. They scored a converted try to reduce the lead to 12-7. Both teams scored a try in the final stages of the first half and the score was 19 points to 14 in favour of the home side which remained the halftime score. Central North started the second half very strongly. They were able to score a try and the game was evened up both on the scoreboard and on the field. The scores were level at 19 all. Central North scored a try late in the game to take the match. Central North made a break and raced 75 metres to score a try in the corner. It was a most disappointing end to the game for the Central Coast team. Central Coast did attack in the final stages and had their chances to take the game into extra time but it was not to be. Best players for Central Coast were lock Peter Steele, hooker Brett Cunningham, No.8 Brett Marchant, and flanker Brad Sheridan. Central Coast: 19, Tim Woods, Derrick Peachey, Adam Winter Tries: Dane McNamara, two conversions lost to Central North: 26

Turf complex. It has been many years since a hockey team from the Peninsula area has been entered in the competition. The U15s compete on a Tuesday night under lights and, so far there have

been two rounds, with the Peninsula team winning both games against Gosford and Wyong convincingly. The team is made up of nine experienced players and four new players trying hockey for the first time.

fter five years with the Central Coast Academy of Sport, executive officer Luke Tucker has decided it’s time for a change and will finish up with the Academy on Thursday, April 5. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the past five years at the Academy and I have certainly met plenty of great people and formed many great relationships that I hope to continue throughout the future,” said Tucker. “There are exciting times ahead for the Academy and

I look forward to witnessing the further growth and success of the organisation,” he added. Tucker joined the Central Coast Academy of Sport in 2007 in a programs and athlete services role and progressed through a number of different positions including programs manager, operations manager and more recently as the executive officer. “As with all of our athletes, coaches, officials and administrators, we look to provide pathways to bigger and better things, so we respect Luke’s decision to move on from

the Academy after five years of employment and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” said Academy managing director Ian Robilliard. “We are currently undergoing a review of our staffing structure at board level, so once that is complete, we will be making a decision on our future plans in regard to staffing and positions of employment within the Central Coast Academy of Sport,” Robilliard added.

The game was even throughout, and Central Coast had many chances to win the match. They had their chances to post points but they missed opportunities at vital times and it proved costly. It was a free flowing game with plenty of ball movement, but Central Coast just could not convert some good play into points on the scoreboard. Central Coast opened the scoring with a try and took a five points to nil lead. However it was Illawarra who hit back and went to a

17 points to five lead. Central Coast scored a try just on halftime through flanker Hugo Pike and at halftime Illawarra led by 17 points to 10. Both teams had many attacking moves and played some good rugby in quite warm conditions. Illawarra went to a 27 points to 17 lead in the second half before Central Coast scored a try in the last five minutes to make the score 27-22. Central Coast then went quickly on attack, but a wayward pass in the final minute saw a try go begging and a possible victory. It was a close game throughout and a most disappointing result for the local team. Central Coast had finished sixth in the Colts Championship. Central Coast: 22, Hugo Pike, Hama Mapapalanga, Teana Nisbett, Robert Kinley tries; Logan Hemopo 1 conversion lost to Newcastle: 27, three tries, two penalty goals, three conversions

Woy Woy Junior Rugby League Football Club are seeking 13 year old boys who would like to play Rugby League for the Roosters in 2012. The Roosters are hoping to field 2 teams in the 13’s this season, one in the 13/1’s and the other in the 13/2’s competition, at the moment we have too many for one team and not enough boys to field two competitive teams. We require more players to ensure all the boys are able to compete safely in their respective competitions. The boys have completed all trial games this season and are all eager to get the season under way. It would be a shame for some of the boys to miss out playing due to lack of numbers, the club is committed to having all the boys playing footy on the coast but also have the resposnibilty of Duty of Care for players registered with the club. The Senior Vice President has been able to secure a sponsor, who will pay full registration for 5 new players, to ensure none of the boys will miss out playing at Woy Woy this year.

After seven ends, Gosford City, comprising Alan Pollock, Steve Lambert, Dick Powe and Wayne Balfe were behind 13 shots zero. They then staged a mini comeback and won three of the next five ends to be 13 to seven behind after 12 ends.

The Greens, comprising Tony Bridge, Mal Campbell, John Edwards and Richard Thornton, regained their composure to finish off strongly to win the match. The Greens will now challenge for the State Title.

Beth Quinlan, Margaret Smith and Karin Wilkinson holding the Australian Open Triples trophy 2007

eth Quinlan has recently been appointed bowls coordinator at Everglades Country Club and, according to general manager Mr Greg Hornby it was a great honour to have someone with Beth’s experience at Everglades.

B

“Beth is passionate about her bowls and still competing at national level. “She is keen to develop bowlers of all ages at Club level and to promote junior bowls on the Peninsula. “We are very excited about the future of bowls at Everglades,” Mr Hornby said. During her 20 year bowling career, Beth has achieved lofty heights in Australian bowls. She represented both the Northern Territory and NSW on many occasions, as well as winning many State Titles, Club Championships,

and Bowler of the Year at St John’s Park Bowling Club. She was nominated for Northern Territory Sportsperson of the Year and was awarded the Steve Abala Role Model, Administrator’s Medal in 1994 while living in Darwin. She was selected to Skip a side in the Australian Sides Championships and also in the Super Six Series in 2011 where her good form earned her a gold medal. She has been reselected for both in April 2012 at Broadbeach, Queensland. More importantly, she represented Australia in India in 2010 to play in an 8-Nations Tournament, coming home with a silver medal. She has recently been reselected for the Australian Bowls squad and is hoping for selection in the Australian team to play World Bowls in Adelaide in December this year. “Beth has brought to Everglades a wealth

of experience in the organisation and planning of future tournaments that will put Everglades on the map as a bowling club to be reckoned with,” said Mr Hornby. “At the same time she is taking on the added role as chairperson of the Joint Bowls Committee which should result in a more cohesive approach to bowls at Everglades,” Mr Hornby said. “Beth has encouraged social and competitive bowlers and her coaching and pre-Pennant presentations provide additional confidence to players in all grades. “Her enthusiasm, leadership and never say die attitude has encouraged others to step up and become more involved with everyday bowls activities and the running of competitions, thus promoting the Club for members and guests to come along to enjoy bowls at all levels.”

Umina Fours title by Ian Jarratt

he Umina Fours Championship was held on February 26, and saw Ray Bourke’s team take home the title with a final result of 25-24.

T

In the semi finals, Ray Bourke’s team defeated Arthur Glyn’s team and Gary Jones’s team defeated Mal Dodds’s team. Tension was high in the lead up to the final, with Ray Bourke’s team comprising Grant Watson, Frank Lowe and Mark Hogden up against the less experienced side of Gary Jones, Tony Wood, Phil Bowron and Mick Jones. The match started with both teams endeavoring to get on top, but was closely fought with Ray’s team nudging ahead by two shots at the half way mark. They then raced away to a handy seven point lead;

however, Gary’s side fought back and, with a six on the 18th end, the teams where only separated by one point. On the next end, Ray’s team recorded a three. Gary’s team, however, had other ideas and won the last two ends but failed

by one shot to play an extra end. This was Ray’s team’s second successive fours title. The last time this feat was achieved at Umina was back in 1986 by then club stalwart Jack Dean.

Mingara Gala Day

Terrigal Bowling Club to support juniors

by Bob Bourke

errigal Bowling Club has further enhanced its support of the development of junior lawn bowlers on the Central Coast by formalising a program partnership with the Central Coast Academy of Sport.

T

With Club Terrigal’s Miro Perovic already on board as coach of the Academy lawn bowls program, there has always been a natural link, which has now been formalised through an agreement that will see Club Terrigal promoted alongside Mingara Recreation Club as lawn bowls program partners. “The support of Club Terrigal will assist us in offering more opportunities for the young bowlers within our program,” said Academy Programs coordinator Sammy Armstrong. “There is a genuine interest to assist in developing young bowlers from all clubs across the coast and the confirmed support of Club Terrigal further demonstrates this,” added Sammy. The Central Coast Academy of Sport is calling on all local bowling clubs to get behind the great initiative, which is helping to develop the next generation of lawn bowlers on the Central Coast.

Club Terrigal and Mingara are leading the way in regard to support of the program from a local club level with both clubs putting the challenge out to others to join the cause. “We have seen firsthand the great benefits being offered to these young bowlers in the Academy program, so we are delighted to now be on board as a program partner and we look forward to sharing the privilege with Mingara and eventually more clubs around the Coast,” said Club Terrigal manager Bruce Jewell. The Illawarra Academy of Sport will host the 2012 ClubsNSW Academy

Games between Friday, April 13, and Sunday, April 15, with the Central Coast lawn bowls squad really looking forward to the opportunity of putting their training into action. “The boys are ready to go, they can’t wait to represent their clubs, the Academy and their region at the Games,” said coach Miro Perovic. “They’re a great group of boys who have bright futures ahead of them if they remain committed and work together with us coaches to further develop their games. “Without the Academy, they wouldn’t have this opportunity, so they are very aware of this and know how lucky they are to be involved,” added Perovic, who will oversee the squad along with program manager Kristy Flaxman at the ClubsNSW Academy Games.

Bowls Coach, Alan Carpenter with some of the students from Chittaway Public School

i n g a r a Recreation Club hosted a Gala Day on Friday, March 23, for 63 students from Chittaway Public School.

M

The day was aimed at giving the students a fun opportunity to experience some aspects of lawn bowls and to identify students who displayed an aptitude and willingness to join a Saturday morning training squad and form an U18 Hub centred on Mingara Bowling Club. Bowls Australia’s Mark Whiteman and Chris Green

brought along a collection of training aids in the form of coloured target circles, flapjacks and plastic cones that were set up around the greens to bowl to and, combined with the student’s bright yellow uniforms, it made for a riot of colour and action on the greens at Mingara. The Hub concept was created by Central Coast Academy of Sport program manager Kristy Flaxman in collaboration with champion bowls identities Cameron Curtis and Shane Globits to form a model for a cooperative bowling club in a “Hub” area to support the

recruitment and retention of U18s with the club’s coaches providing a regular Saturday morning training session in line with the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After School Communities Bowls Program. The Active After School Communities Program is also supported by Bowls NSW who have provided 30 sets of small size lawn bowls and by Bowls Central Coast with administration support. It is the intention that the U18 Hubs would eventually cover all of the Central Coast with the view to creating competitions and matches between Hubs.

The Masters then backed the next week and amongst them won five gold medals, four silver and one bronze. Standouts were Deb Braddish, Christine Bishop, Kerry Armstrong Smith, Wendy Cook, Mick Magurren, Rick Boylan, Steve Murphy, Bill Cook, Rob McLeod, Dave Gaffney and Peter Braddish. The majority of these Masters are now heading off to the Australian Titles in Kurrawa in April. “Umina members also did exceptionally well in the life saving events due to the coaching of Paul Sharpe and Kerry Armstrong Smith,” said Ms Lavers. Jack Waining came third in the U15 Champion Life Saver as did Teigan Miller in the U17 Champion Life Saver. The U17 Patrol Competitors, made up of Teigan Miller, Jack Waining, Jess Thomas and Jack Dixon placed first while the Open Patrol team comprising Paul Sharpe, Rick Boylan, Dave Gaffney, Christine Bishop, Dave Bishop and Warren Whitney came third. Mollie helped with activities at Umina SLSC’s annual Surf Camp which involved fun, educational activities with young age groups. Umina SLSC invited vision impaired children from Vision Australia to participate. These children needed one on one support throughout the day for their safety and enjoyment and Mollie proved herself a great ambassador for Umina as well as the Surf Lifesaving movement. “Mollie is a quiet natured youth who always helps out whenever she can, no matter what the task,” said Umins SLSC publicity officer

Mr Carl Krucler. “She recently spent six plus hours walking through the Ocean Beach Caravan Park selling raffle tickets to raise much needed funds for her club, she helped at our annual Sponsors night, she attends her patrols, is punctual and is always in full Rookie uniform including hat and always has a smile on her face,’ he said. Recently Mollie competed at Branch, R and R, water and beach events as an individual and team member, as well as offering

to be a patient at Champion Lifesaver just to be involved and help others in Surf lifesaving. “What a fantastic candidate for the Rookie of the Month, she makes us proud,” said Mr Krucler. “After being personally presented with her prize of a Canon Camera from Anthony Kellick of Sheather and Merrigan she was delighted and acknowledged she would be using it the very next day on her school excursion,” he said.

Coast athletes to compete at state level

by Ed Batten

by Neryl East

ondon might have the Olympics later this year, but a group of athletes from the Central Coast will get their own taste of Games competition when they take on some of the state’s best young competitors this month.

L

The ClubsNSW Academy Games will be staged in Wollongong from April 13 to 15, with around 1000 competitors vying for honours in seven sports. The ClubsNSW Academy

Games is an annual event developed by the Academies of Sport Incorporated (ASi). It began in 2005 with the Central Coast Academy of Sport hosting the event for the first three years. The Northern Inland Academy of Sport hosted the Games from 2008 to 2011, and the hosting baton was handed to Illawarra Academy of Sport for 2012, 2013 and 2014 Illawarra Academy of Sport general manager Carolyn Dews said the Games were a significant sporting and community event involving representatives of Regional

Academies of Sport throughout the state. “We’re looking forward to welcoming the Central Coast athletes and support personnel to our region, along with plenty of spectators,” she said. “Who knows, you might be watching someone who will go on to represent Australia on the world stage.” Sports included in the Games are hockey, netball, basketball, golf, lawn bowls, cycling and rugby union. Competition will be held at a range of venues across the Illawarra region.

he Central Coast Academy of Sport has appointed 23-year-old Shelley Barlin of Empire Bay as its new athlete services and events coordinator.

T

Ms Barlin completed work placement with the Academy in 2009 while she studied a Bachelor of Exercise Science. She continued her involvement with the Academy after her official work placement had finished. Her ongoing involvement with the Academy included attending the 2009 Clubs NSW Academy Games in Armidale as a sports trainer and overall tour assistant. Between October 2010 and November 2011, Ms Barlin worked in London as a sports developer for a company called Let Me Play. In this role, she focused on providing opportunities for young people to become involved in sport and to participate in a fun and safe environment. When Ms Barlin returned to the Central Coast, she got back in contact with Academy management to seek assistance in finding

an entry point to work within the sport and recreation industry in Australia. She was offered a fulltime role as athlete services and events coordinator. She has now commenced the role where she will further

Athletics

enhance the personalised service that the Academy offers its scholarship athletes. She will also look after the coordination and delivery of events.

ighty-seven Central Coast athletes qualified for the State Track and Field Championships for Little Athletics held from March 2325.

E

These athletes qualified for these championships after competing at the Zone Championships in December and the Regional Championships in February. This was the pinnacle event for track and field athletes in the Little Athletics season, held at both of Sydney Olympic Park’s athletics facilities. Over 2600 athletes from over 250 centres qualified for this year’s State Championships, including approximately 1350 girls and 1300 boys. 17 athletes competed in six events, 34 in five events, 185 in four events, 470 in three events, 750 in two events and 1200 competed in only one. There were 211 track events and 102 field events over the three days of the championships, and up to 24 athletes could qualify for each event. Five of the six Central Coast Centres were represented. The largest number of athletes came from the Tuggerah Lakes Mingara Centre with 46, while 29 sportspeople represented Gosford and 10 Wyong, and Woy Woy Peninsula along with Terrigal-Wamberal were represented by one athlete each. The Toukley Centre had an athlete qualify last season, but was unable to replicate the feat this year. Akaylah Leef (Wyong) finished in second place in the U14 girls shot put and discus throw, while her younger brother Mason earned the same position in the U11 boys shot put. Tate Felton (Gosford) finished third in the U11boys 1500m walk and his older brother Jay finished first in the same event for U17s. In all, Central Coast athletes finished in four of the top eight positions in the U17 boys 1500m walk, with placements as follows: Jay Felton (Gosford) first, Matthew Killen (Wyong) fourth, Jason Dredge (Tuggerah) fifth and Adam Batten (Tuggerah) seventh. Central Coast Zone coordinator Ed Batten described this as “a great result, when [considering

Caitlin Delaney that] only four can qualify from Zone, and must then also qualify through the Regional Championships.” In the U14 girls’ discus, the Central Coast had three of the top four athletes in the state: Jaimee Farrant (Gosford) first, Akaylah Leef (Wyong) second and Tegan Fennell (Tuggerah) third. Tyler Jones (Wyong) set a new state record in the U14 boys’ 1500m walk: 6:23.30, smashing the previous record (7:14.21) by almost a minute. Tyler Gunn (Gosford) came first in the U12 boys’ 400m run, and second in the 200m run. Caitlin Delaney (Tuggerah) came second in the 3000m run and eighth in both the 800m and 1500m runs. In high jump, Nicola McDermott (Gosford) came first in the U15 girls. Ella Hopwood (Tuggerah) finished with the third best height in the U9 girls high jump, however, she was relegated to equal fifth place following a count back. The two TerrigalWamberal Centre and Woy Woy Centre athletes both qualified for the U10 1500metre run: Tom Boaler (Terrigal/Wamberal) came eighth and Lachlan Rousell (Woy Woy Peninsula) placed 16th.

There are usually 40,000 athletes who register with Little Athletics each season, and whom are then allocated in to one of five regions across the state. Next season, there will be a reduction in the size of each region as the number of regions will increase from five to eight. As a result of this restructure, the Central Coast Zone will now face competition from the Newcastle area, and not North Sydney, as it did previously. Further to that, this change has a broader impact across all regions, as it means that the first two athletes in each event at the next Regional Championships will now automatically qualify for the State Championships. The number of automatic qualifiers will remain unchanged at 16 (eight country and eight Sydney metro), allowing a further eight athletes to progress based on their performances across the regions. Registrations for next season open in August and competition will end in March 2013. The cross country and road walks will close out the 2011-2012 season on July 1 at Kembla Joggers Cross Country Park in West Dapto.
