Underground cables installed at Empire Bay New underground 66,000 Volt electricity cables have been installed from Woy Woy to Empire Bay. The cabling, completed on Saturday, July 14, was designed to help to power around 6000 homes and businesses around Empire Bay and Killcare. The new cables are expected to start being used early next year. The cables were mostly located under local roads and were laid by trenching. At regular intervals along the cable route, sections of cables were joined together in an underground joint bay. The work included digging in parts of Empire Bay Dr between Rosella Rd and Palmers Lane to install conduit pipes to safely house the cables. Specialist cable crews carried out this section of work during school holidays to reduce disruptions to the local community. Temporary lane closures and traffic controls were in place to help crews complete the work. Sections of road excavated to install the cables were filled with a temporarily asphalt surface to allow motorists to safely access the road immediately after crews complete works. The road was permanently reinstated after all work was finished. Email, 18 Jul 2012 Gareth Trickey, Ausgrid

Cr Macfadyen successfully moved, at the council meeting on Tuesday, July 3, that Council remove the s149 (5) planning certificates message that related to sea level rise until the NSW State Government legislates that all Councils in NSW give a clear direction to all property owners who are affected by this event. “Of the 50 Local Government Areas in NSW that are affected by sea

Is there there a a magic magic formula formula Is to running running a a business? business? to Whether running a business is a science or an art, the main aspect in running a successful business is to treat it as a business rather than a job. As Gerber says: “spend time working on your business rather than in it”. From this, the main criteria is to have a plan or goal for what your business will metaphorically look like. Allocate roughly one third of your time on things like planning, sales & marketing, public relations, treasury (debtors, creditors, cash flow etc) and quality control. The rest of your time should be in production depending on the size of your business. The key points are: 1. Plan your business – what are you trying to achieve? Did you create your business to provide a job for you or to create income to give you a life? Decide what your business will look like and then act to put that structure in place. Even a 2 page plan is better than nothing. 2. Systems – know your business, know what you want and design systems that achieve that goal. 3. Ensure that your staff (and you) know what those systems are and adhere to them. 4. Measure your progress to your goals for the business. I am appalled at accountants that are given the clients’ work early and yet produce the financial statements in May or June the following year. You must have your finger on the pulse. How else would you know if the business is still breathing? Many business owners neglect the planning aspect. They spend all of their time doing what the business does and never stand back and think about where the business is heading. This is why some businesses fail and yet others succeed spectacularly. When you focus on your business as a business, you then start to look at things differently. You realise that maybe you personally don’t have all the answers and need help – professional help. Then you can seek it out. On our web site are many tips and tools that can help you. We also have some free downloads on our www.broadviewpublishing.com. au site. If your business is not what you want it to be, give me a call and I will do a free appraisal for you. It may even be the case that being in business is not for you, or you are in the wrong business.

In November 2009, Napoleon failed a drug test because his asthma medication had been incorrectly labelled meaning he took the wrong type, containing a banned substance. In 2010, the swimming governing body FINA imposed a three-month ban on Napoleon. Even though FINA accepted an innocent mistake was made, they held him partly responsible for the error because he did not check the medication. The ban would have ruled the freestyle specialist out of the Commonwealth Games in which he had qualified in two events, but a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport saw Napoleon’s suspension shortened, allowing him to

Tom Slingsby to sail in Olympics
From Page 4 Ross completed a comeback of sorts just to qualify for the London Games. An Olympic quarterfinalist in 2004, Ross missed the Beijing Games in 2008 and began chasing a dream to become the first Australian to play wide receiver in the NFL in America. Ross almost scored an individual 100m berth with a blistering Olympic A qualifier of 10.16 in May, but the time was deemed illegal due to a +2.9 tailwind. Joshua rates as the third fastest Australian of all time, after Matt Shirvington and Patrick Johnson, with his personal best 10.08, set in 2007. He won the Stawell gift in 2003 and also in 2005 off the scratch mark, making him just the third person to win the event twice. The former Henry Kendall High student’s primary training base is in Melbourne and is a member of the Collingwood club. Ross’ recent performances included winning first place in the 4x100m at the 2012 Kawasaki Golden Grand Prix in Kawasaki, Japan, the 100m at the 2012 Melbourne Australian Open in Melbourne, and the 100m event at the 2012 Adelaide Track Classic in Adelaide.

Cup in Spain and third in the 2011 Sailing World Cup in France. He won the Rolex World Sailor of the Year in 2010 and was World Champion for the laser singlehanded dinghy event in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Slingsby, who has been
on the national team for seven years, was a full time tennis player until the age of 16 when he suffered burn out. He then turned his focus to sailing, which he had been doing since the age of eight. He went into the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games as the number one ranked sailor and world champion in his class, however, his Olympic campaign did not go as planned and he finished 22nd. In 2010, Slingsby was named World Sailor of the Year and was the first Australian to do so.
The award came after a year of racing where he reclaimed the world number one ranking, won the 2010 Laser World Championship (his third in four years) and took out the 2010 Etchells World Championship. He also won three rounds of the 2010 World Cup including one at the Olympic venue of Weymouth. Slingsby shed weight down to 81kg to contest the Olympic Test Event in Weymouth last year, testing himself to see if being lighter would gain him an advantage. The pair was at it again at the 2012 World Championships, claiming a bronze medal followed by gold at the ISAF World Cup to suggest they would be tough to beat at London 2012. Continued page 6

it gave her the chance to compete at the 2005 Deaf Olympics. Teigan competed at the 2008 World Cup in Manchester and won two bronze medals. Later that year at her first Paralympic Games in Beijing, Teigan made the final in four of her six races and set several personal bests. She had to deal with the ignominy of missing the start of the 400m freestyle event after her starting light ran out
of battery, forcing the race to be restarted. Based at the AIS in Canberra, she has returned solid results in the lead up to London 2012. After recovering from a shoulder injury in 2008, Teigan cut more than a second off her personal best in the 100m butterfly in winning bronze at the 2009 World Cup meet in Manchester. Since then, Teigan has continued to excel, including a standout meet at the 2011
Para Pan Pacs, where she won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Her experience in Beijing was very special for Teigan as she was able to experience many different cultures within the athletes’ village and the Chinese culture outside the village. After Teigan’s tilt at gold at London 2012, she is planning to practice massage in the capacity as a chiropractor or physiotherapist

Top two clash in a thriller
voca Beach d e f e a t e d Ourimbah by 20 points to 14 at Ourimbah Rugby Park on Saturday, July 14, in round 13 of the Central Coast Rugby Union competition.
A
In one of the best games of rugby on the Central Coast this year, the lead alternated several times before Avoca Beach finished the stronger team to run out winners by 20 points to 14. Avoca Beach maintained their lead on the competition ladder while Ourimbah dropped to third place as a result of the close loss. Avoca Beach took the lead early with a penalty goal to Matt Maloney and this score line of 3-0 remained the score for well into the first half. Ourimbah did reply with a penalty goal in the first half but it was Avoca Beach who went to the halftime leading by 10 points to 3 as a result of a converted try. It was an evenly fought first half with both teams playing excellent team rugby.
Avoca Beach had several good players but none were better than Emile Thomas and half back Justin Staben. Their experience in general play certainly put Avoca Beach on the go forward during the match. Ourimbah were not to be
outdone however. They opened the second half very strongly, and two penalty goals and a try to five-eight Joel Wagner saw them take the lead in the match. They had gone from 3-10 down to a 14 point to 10

lead and things were looking good for the home side. The Ourimbah front row, headed by props Peter Friend and Brett Cunningham, was proving very dominant and were two of the best for Ourimbah. Alex Lucas at outside centre was also playing well for the home side. However Avoca Beach proved the stronger in the final quarter of the match and they crossed for a converted try and kicked a penalty goal to grab the lead and to hang on for 20 to 14 victory. Both teams played well and with the scores continually fluctuating, there was much excitement for the entire 80 minutes. The match certainly showed both teams are a threat this year but the win placed Avoca Beach as favourites for the Minor Premiership. Northlakes scored a try on fulltime to clinch victory over Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval by 25 points to 23. In a seesawing game the
scores continually changed and both teams had their chances of victory as the scores remained close for the entire 80 minutes. Both teams scored two tries in the first half and the two teams went to the halftime break with scores level at 15 points apiece. Northlakes were forced into an uncontested scrum situation very early in the match and had to play much of the game with a player less. This situation did affect the Woy Woy scrum and did allow the game to lose much of its structure. The situation allowed for a very open game and play went from one end of the field to the other. Among the best for Woy Woy were centre Moses Afoa, flanker Noni Fangaiuiha, and hooker Nick Garnett. Northlakes also had several excellent performers. These included Tyson Boyes, lock Reihana Hemopo, prop Julian

Campbell and flanker Glenn Stone. Both teams scored a try early in the second half before Woy Woy fullback Dan Campbell kicked a penalty goal for the home side to take the lead by 23 points to 20. Just when it seemed that Woy Woy would hang on for a good win, Northlakes scored a 50 metre try in the corner to steal victory right on fulltime. It was a good game of rugby to watch but certainly would have been a tough one for both coaching staffs. Kariong proved too strong for Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval running out winners by 38 points to 12. Kariong ran in six tries to two which was a fair indication of the difference in the two teams. Kariong scored 19 points in both halves. They led by 19 points to seven at the halftime break and continued the same form to go on to victory. Kariong’s best players were prop Shannon Beavan, Steven Marshall, and fullback Justin Canterbury who crossed for two tries. Warnervale never ceased trying, and their best players were halfback Josh Holman and hooker Ketoni Toutai. Terrigal entered the Top Four on the competition ladder with a commanding win over The Entrance at Joseph Banks Oval, winning the match by 36 points to seven. Terrigal was always in control and were able to cross for six tries. A feature of the match was the three tries scored by winger Declan Waight. Others to play well for Terrigal were centres Guy Schofield and Dylan Calabria, while The Entrance’s best players were Frank Munro and Adam Little.

Third loss in a row for Ourimbah osford defeated Ourimbah by 27 points to 0 at Gosford Showground in round 14 of the Central Coast Rugby Union competition on Saturday, July 21.
G
Gosford got away to an excellent start and maintained that lead for the remainder of the match. Things did not start well for Ourimbah with the opening kickoff going into touch on the full and then play saw Gosford reply with a couple of telling kicks into the corner. Gosford crossed for the opening try within five minutes of the start of the match. This try was scored from a rolling maul when prop Steve Lauti crossed for the try. The conversion by halfback Damien Montgomery put Gosford in front by seven points to nil. Gosford had further chances to post points in the opening stages of the match but it was not to be. Play did settle down after awhile and both teams had periods of good attacking play.
No points were put on the scoreboard for 20 minutes until Gosford crossed for their second try at the 26 minute mark of the first half. This try resulted from some very good play. Gosford Number 8 Unuoi Vaenuku made a break down the sideline from well inside his own half. When caught, he passed inside to winger Ben Goodenough, and after several passes across the Gosford backline fullback David Von Kotze scored in the corner. Gosford had jumped to a handy lead of 12 points to nil. Things were made more difficult for Ourimbah when Gosford crossed for another try right on halftime. Unuoi Vaenuku completed a good half by scoring the try. The try was not converted and Gosford went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to nil. Best for Gosford in the opening 40 minutes were prop Steve Lauti, and backs Mark Tipple and Adam Carlisle. Ourimbah had several good players and these included prop Brett
Cunningham and lock Tyler Jones. Flanker Chris Brady was all over the paddock for the visitors in what was a strong performance. The second half developed into a real arm wrestle. Both teams had periods of ascendancy and the physicality of the game was clearly evident. Ourimbah was behind on the scoreboard and was finding it difficult to make any inroads through the Gosford defence. Gosford sealed the match with a further two tries in the second half. Steve Lauti crossed for his second try while winger Chris Heap capped off a good game with a late try for the home team. The win by Gosford put them back into the Top Four while the loss for Ourimbah dropped them to fifth spot. The race for the Finals, with four weeks remaining, is one of the tightest in many years. Kariong proved just that little bit stronger than Woy Woy and recorded a 23 points to 12 victory at Woy Woy Oval. Kariong scored three
tries to two which was a fair indication of the flow of the match. It was a closely fought struggle but it was Kariong who were just in front on the scoreboard for much of the game. Kariong had several good players in what was a strong effort. Steven Marshall, Tevita Moala and Sione Ofahengaue all made significant contributions for the visitors during the game. Best for Woy Woy was Noni Fangaiuiha. The win by Kariong maintained their second spot on the ladder in what
is a closely fought semi-final race. Terrigal also had to fight hard to score a win at Slade Park against Northlakes. Terrigal got home by 23 points to 13. Terrigal, like Kariong, scored three tries to two, and that was also a good indication of how this match went as well. The scores were locked at 13 points apiece with about 10 minutes to go so both teams had their chances. However it was Terrigal who scored very late in the game to seal the win.
by Larry Thomson
Best for Terrigal were Ryan Metcalfe and Phil Heard, while Northlakes were best served by Glen Stone and Marshall Hemopo. Avoca Beach piled on 14 tries in a very one sided victory over The Entrance at Heazlett Park, running out winners by 88 points to 10. Avoca Beach were always in total control, and a feature of the match was the points scoring effort of Avoca Beach’s Matt Maloney who finished the game with a personal tally of 31 points.

These matches are also very important in terms of what teams will make the semi-finals this year. Two matches in particular are significant. Terrigal are at home to Ourimbah at The Haven Oval, and Kariong are at home to Avoca Beach at Kariong Oval. Both these games involve teams who are involved in a neck and neck battle for Premiership honours. Avoca Beach will travel to Kariong Oval to play Kariong in what should be a cliffhanger. Avoca Beach is currently leading the competition with Kariong just behind them in second spot. These two teams are both in top form and have not lost a game for several

Much of the same can be said for the game at The Haven Oval between Terrigal and Ourimbah. It will be close and gripping. These two teams are fourth and fifth respectively and a win would be seen as absolutely critical for both teams. A loss would see that team in a difficult position in reaching the semi-finals although there are still several very tight matches to go this season. Ourimbah would be most disappointed in their game last week. They were unable to score any tries in that match, and this would be a concern to the Ourimbah coaching staff. Ourimbah need to score tries and to do it this Saturday would be the key for them. Terrigal have had three

and joining Avoca Beach at the top of the competition. This match will tell us a lot about the Premiership credentials of both these teams. Both have good all round teams, they have strong forward packs, quick and effective backlines, and reliable goal kickers. Avoca Beach will try to run the big Kariong forward pack around and will base their match on mobility and speed to the breakdown. Kariong will try to keep the ball in the forwards and to work play though the middle of the field. Kariong however do have speed out wide and with the possible return of Derrick Peachey they have the speed to counteract the very good backline possessed by the visitors. This will be an enthralling match and will go right down to the wire.
very good, even though a couple were close, wins recently and have climbed back into the Top Four. This is such a vital game. Ourimbah will try to keep the game in the forwards as their forward pack has been in outstanding form. Terrigal will need to meet that challenge and then try to spread the ball wide to put the visitor’s defence to the full test. This will be a most spirited clash and this game will go right down to the 80th minute. The neighbouring clubs of Northlakes and Warnervale meet at Slade Park and this will also be a very close game. Both these teams really enjoy defeating the other so there will be nothing left on the paddock at the end of this game by any of the players involved. Northlakes were relatively easy winners in their first round clash and they will want to do that again. However Warnervale have been far more effective in recent weeks and would love to get the win this time around. Both teams will toss the ball around so the clash should be a good one for those who get to Slade Park to watch on Saturday. Gosford should be too strong for The Entrance this Saturday at Gosford Showground. The Entrance gave a wholehearted effort last Saturday but Gosford will hold too much firepower for The Entrance team this weekend. Gosford know they must win with a bonus point but they also know they will meet a team who will never back down.

T oe Marston of Umina was named the Greatest Ever Australian right centre-back as part of the Greatest Ever Australian Team in the Greatest Ever Australian Footballer project gala event at Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on July 12.
J
Marston was born in 1926 in Leichhardt and became the first Australian to play professionally overseas when he signed for Preston North End in 1950. His five year stint at the club included a FA Cup Final appearance at Wembley and being selected in the English Football League’s best XI. Marston was a member of the Leichhardt-Annandale Club from 1943 to 1949 and 1955 to 1958, Preston North End from 1950 to 1955 with 185 appearances, FA Cup Finalist in 1954, APIA Leichhardt from 1959 to 1964, and Western Suburbs SC in 1969.
He had 37 appearances with the Socceroos, with his debut appearance in 1947 in a match against South Africa. Fifteen thousand public votes were cast online in The Greatest Ever Australian Footballer project, which celebrates the rich history for Australian football and honours the many great players across the decades of the game in Australia. Spanning many generations of Australian football, the team included players who have represented Australia at its three FIFA World Cup appearances. More than 70 nominees were selected by an expert judging panel based on a criterion. Nominees must have been born in Australia or played for Australia, provided excellence on the national and or international stage, longevity, and contribution to Australian football or having left a positive imprint on the profile and growth of football in Australia.
Premier Barry O’Farrell and the Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley handed over the money on Thursday, July 12, joined by local members Chris Spence (The Entrance), Darren Webber (Wyong), and Chris Holstein (Gosford). “As always it’s great to be on the Central Coast and I’m particularly pleased to be delivering the $1.8 million that will enable the Pluim Park redevelopment to start,” Mr O’Farrell said. “The popularity of football continues to grow on the Central Coast with over 13,000 members to reap the rewards of the upgraded sporting facility next year. “I must also acknowledge the contribution of Peter Newell, ClubsNSW Chairman, and his team for their support of the NSW Government’s ClubGrants Scheme. “This project is an outstanding example of the good that comes from our registered clubs, and will benefit local businesses, local people and local families as a result of
the NSW Government’s investment in the region,” he said. Member for The Entrance Mr Chris Spence welcomed the announcement and said the funding was evidence of the Government’s commitment to the people of the Central Coast. “This money will allow the playing surfaces to be returfed, an extension to the car park, new office space and a raft of improvements to the facilities,” Mr Spence said. “Work is expected to start in October with Pluim Park scheduled to re-open 1 March 2013. “In honouring its promise to fund the upgrade of this local facility, the NSW Government is sending a clear message to the people of the Central Coast,” he said. Central Coast Football chairman Mr Darren Sprod said its members were excited about Pluim Park becoming the world class community sporting complex the Central Coast deserves. “We look forward to engaging with the footballing public on the Central Coast as well as helping to provide employment on the Coast with the engagement of companies during the construction phase of the project,” Mr Sprod said.

Porter’s first competitive match for his beloved Mariners was against Perth Glory in the 2006 Pre-Season Cup, a game that ended 2-1 in favour of Central Coast thanks to strikes from Stewart Petrie and Adam Kwasnik. “It’s been a tough decision to make to have to retire from the game, but at the end of the day, I did the injury nearly two years ago now and in that time it’s been extremely frustrating trying to come back and having setbacks,” Porter said. “The way I look at is that I’ve been a professional at
the Club for close to seven years and there are a lot of young kids and a lot of people out there that would give up a lot to have done that. “I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved at this Club. “To have been here from basically day one and to
have seen the growth of the Club both on the pitch, and building the supporter base and the community support has been unbelievable.” While injury has cruelled Porter’s chances of prolonging his playing days, the former Australian Institute of Sport scholar
acknowledged the time had come to listen to his body. Porter will now focus his energies on becoming a coach, and plans to utilise the networks he has built to reach the football goals he set himself growing up. “Even when I was fully fit, I had dreams that when
I retired, I was going to get into coaching,” he said. “I guess it’s just come a little earlier than I expected. “Everyone has goals and dreams growing up as to what they want to achieve in football, I still have those dreams and goals. “I guess now I am standing on a touchline instead of out there with the boots on. “I’ve spoken to Arnie (Graham Arnold) and he’s more than happy to have me in, so I’m going to be in and around the squad. “I’ll be like a sponge, soaking in information and I guess looking at things at a different perspective.” Current Central Coast Mariners head coach Arnold said it was a “tragedy” for a 25-year-old to have to call time on his career because of injury. “Brad has always been highly rated at the Mariners, and unfortunately, due to injury over the two years that I’ve been here, I probably didn’t get to see the best of Brad,” Arnold said. “When I first came here, Brad was a young player
that I was looking forward to working with. “We wish Brad, as a guy who is a Mariner through and through, the best for the future.” Central Coast Mariners general manager of football Mr Lawrie McKinna signed Porter to his first professional contract and echoed Arnold’s sentiment. “When we first signed Brad he was a young, quiet boy and in the last five or six years he has grown to become an important member of the Mariners family,” McKinna said. “Brad always gave 100 per cent in training and on the park and I believe his strength was his fitness, which made him adaptable to many positions.” Porter was an especially integral member of the Club’s first team from 2008 to 2010. During this time he started 43 matches in the Hyundai A-League and made six appearances in the 2009 version of the AFC Champions League, Central Coast’s first foray into Asia’s premier Club competition.

half, both scored by in-form striker Jack North who took his season tally to 15, the first following some clever lead up work from Daniel Edwards, the second set up by Daniel Surridge. The win, and Berkeley Vale’s second consecutive loss, means that Wyoming are now six points clear of the field and with a huge 45goal goal difference. Second-placed Berkeley Vale went into their match against East Gosford without a number of key players and suffered a major setback midway through the first half when their tough midfielder, Luke Rogers, was sent off following a
second yellow card. East Gosford then took the lead with a controversial goal to Glen Watkins with second-half substitute, Zac Neilson, clinching a crucial 2-0 win for East Gosford with a 72nd minute goal. The result means that East Gosford remain in contention for a semi-final spot while Berkeley Vale’s aim of back-to-back League Championships suffered a serious blow as they fell six points behind Wyoming. For the second consecutive week Budgewoi lost their home ground advantage when the fields at Budgewoi Soccer Club were again closed due
to overnight rain. This time the match was transferred to their opponent, Umina’s, home ground at Umina Oval. Both teams went into the match without important players, with Budgewoi’s Josh Ellery out for the season with a broken leg and Umina’s Jason Stafford serving a one-match suspension for his fifth yellow card. With the two sides engaged in the fight for semi-final positions the match developed into a tight, no-nonsense encounter that ended as a scoreless draw. Budgewoi will again
be away from home next Saturday night when they meet Wyoming in the Match of the Round at Pluim Park. Killarney District were untroubled to defeat the struggling Doyalson team 7-1 in their match at EDSAAC North. It was Doyalson’s 10th loss from 13 matches this season and the eighth occasion that they’ve conceded five or more goals in a match. Nathan Byrn and Dean Blenheim each scored twice with Todd Leach, Jamie Young and Matt Lawrence also finding the net. Will Reed scored Doyalson’s late consolation
goal. The win moves Killarney District into clear third place just one point behind Berkeley Vale. Kanwal chalked up their third win in four matches as they continued their late season revival with a hardfought 1-0 win over The Entrance in a vital match at Pat Morley Oval. A 55th minute 40-metre drive from Michael Maulder proved the difference between the two teams and saw Kanwal move three points clear of the relegation zone for the first time this season.

hree retail outlets in Erina were damaged by a fire in the early hours of the morning on Friday, June 15.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews received a number of Triple Zero (000) calls from 2.40am. A total of eight fire trucks were despatched, with 70 fire-fighters, including both permanent and retained (on-call), fighting the blaze for four hours, using hoses and spraying from aerial booms. The fire was believed to have started in One Stop Fashion, before spreading to Amaze N Play and Casey’s Toys. The fire engulfed the toy shop, but fire-fighters were able to save the adjoining JB HiFi store, and the Roads and Maritime Authority office. They used Thermal Imaging cameras to check for any fire spots. FRNSW fire-fighters also prevented fire from spreading to the Harvey

FRNSW Zone Commander Superintendent David Turner said he was proud of the fire-fighters who battled the blaze. “The fire spread very quickly because of the high fire load inside some of the commercial premises, but the techniques we used, including a ‘wall of water’ from our hoses and aerial pumper, stopped it spreading further and saved some valuable property,” Superintendent Turner said. “It was a long night, but I am proud of all the firefighters for their work.”

osford Cr Jim Macfadyen has called on the State Government to regulate s149 (5) planning certificates across all relevant councils to give consistency, stability and common sense.
Cr Macfadyen successfully moved, at the council meeting on Tuesday, July 3, that Council remove the s149 (5) planning certificates message that related to sea level rise until the NSW State Government legislates that all Councils in NSW give a clear direction to all property owners who are affected by this event. “Of the 50 Local Government Areas in NSW that are affected by sea
level rise, only 16, including Gosford, have issued 149(5) certificates notifying property owners,” said Cr Macfadyen. “Up to 9000 properties in Gosford Local Government Area could be affected by the s149(5) certificates. “Council issued these certificates under advice and good intentions, but I now realise that there is no stability in the matter unless it is regulated across
all NSW councils who are affected. “It’s important that the message be consistent across all relevant councils in NSW, that residents feel their future is stable and that common sense prevails,” he said. A Mayoral Minute was starred at Council’s meeting of Tuesday, June 26, following an article titled “Landing Sunk?” that appeared in the Gosford edition of the Central Coast Express Advocate on Friday, June 22. Council’s staff report
stated that recent articles in the media regarding the Landing development did not accurately reflect the unwavering support being given by Gosford Council and the NSW Government. “The development of the Masterplan for The Landing is built on the

foundation of strong community consultation process through the Gosford Challenge, and is a component of the holistic approach being taken to ensure the regeneration of the whole Gosford CBD including the waterfront precinct.
“The outcomes and expectations put forward by the community during this process have been the driving force behind the creation of this Masterplan for The Landing. “The Landing will be the catalyst for the redevelopment of greater Gosford City, attracting further investment and creating significant economic activity for the wider Central Coast area.
“The combination of community and commercial infrastructure will provide a balanced community hub that re-connects the city to the waterfront,” stated the report. “The commercial aspects of the Masterplan have been designed to provide maximum benefit to the community economically, while creating a community space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to
Gosford. “It is anticipated that over 4000 jobs will be created within the Gosford Region as a direct result of The Landing development, with initial building works also creating significant work for local tradespeople, contractors and suppliers.” Gosford Council Agenda MM.8, 26 Jun 2012

Wilkinson signs Korean contract by Central Coast Mariners Media Photo: John Dewberry-Central Coast Mariners
h a m p i o n defender Alex Wilkinson has agreed to terms with K-League h e a v y w e i g h t Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC on a two-and-a-half year contract.
C
Wilkinson, 27, joined the men from the Jeonju World Cup Stadium on Friday, July 20, after reaching an agreement with Jeonbuk management on his recent visit to Korea Republic. After being advised of Wilkinson’s decision to accept Jeonbuk’s offer, Central Coast Mariners worked diligently to agree a transfer fee with the Korean table-toppers for one of the clubs most loyal servants. Wilkinson said he had mixed feelings about swapping the yellow and
navy of the Mariners for the green of Jeonbuk. “It has been seven years with the Mariners and I’ve loved every minute up here,” Wilkinson said. “I love the team, I love the club, and that’s what has made the decision so hard.” “But there was always a part of me that wanted to play overseas and this offer was in the too good to refuse
category. “I’m leaving a great club behind, [but] Jeonbuk are a very good team that has a very good set-up, so that made the decision a bit easier,” he said. Wilkinson will be joined in Korea’s culinary capital, Jeonju, by his wife Brooke and newborn son Luca, and added that he takes comfort from the fact there are now
so many Australians plying their trade in Korea’s top flight. Indeed, former Mariners teammate Matthew Simon, now with Chunnam Dragons, is only a one-hour drive away ensuring the Wilkinsons will never be too far away from a familiar face. Nevertheless, the highly regarded defender said he hopes his new club draw the Mariners in the 2013 AFC Champions League so he can return to Gosford’s idyllic bayside arena. “It would be awesome and that’s what I am hoping for, then I can come back and see everyone!” Mariners head coach Graham Arnold, although naturally disappointed to lose his captain, said the opportunity for Wilkinson to set himself up financially is one the player couldn’t refuse.
“Alex has been a great servant for this club for a very long time and we are disappointed to see him go, but at the moment Australian clubs simply cannot compete with the money on offer in other Asian leagues,” Arnold said. “We have two Australian youth internationals in Trent Sainsbury and Zac Anderson at the Mariners who, given the opportunity alongside someone as experienced as Patrick Zwaanswijk, can do a fine job for us next season. “We wish Alex well and, like Mustafa Amini, Rostyn Griffiths and Matt Simon who have left us in the last seven months, look forward to following their fortunes.” Central Coast Mariners chairman Mr Peter Turnbull said: “Alex Wilkinson deserves this opportunity to secure his financial future.” “Alex’s transfer is another
confirmation of the Mariners supporting Australian players in achieving the maximum from their football careers. “Supporters will see this trend continue as Central Coast leads the way in providing opportunities for Australian youth, Australian talent.” Wilkinson made 172 Hyundai A-League appearances for Central Coast Mariners over seven seasons. He played in three Hyundai A-League Grand Finals and was integral to Central Coast’s two Hyundai A-League Premiership triumphs. A gentleman off the pitch and a warrior on it, Wilkinson departs not only the Mariners but the Hyundai A-League having built a reputation few others can match.

Turnbull added that he believed Ryan’s invitation from Tottenham showed that the young shot-stopper, and the Central Coast Mariners, are being spoken about by some of the world’s biggest clubs. “I think it is reflective of Mathew’s standing in the game,” he said. “He has stature, he deservedly won a number of awards last season and has already been picked as Mark Schwarzer’s understudy for the Socceroos, he is a guy who is sought after. “It is because we are successful and we reward Aussie youth that these offers are happening,” Turnbull concluded.

It will be the second time in history that the Central Coast has been awarded the honour of hosting the most prestigious event on Bowls NSW’s calendar. Sixteen club sides from around NSW will converge on The Entrance, each striving to carry home the Blue Ribbon event at state level. There will be four sections, each of four clubs, with no section easy. Avoca will be in Section Three, their first match on the Saturday morning against Alexandria and Erskineville. Avoca will face the strong Park Beach Club from Coffs Harbour in the afternoon Round Two game, followed by Round Three on Sunday morning when Avoca meets northern neighbour, Zone 2’s representative, Raymond Terrace. The club with the best
Greg Watson, Rex Gemmell, Garry Macfadyen, Richard Love and Kevin Bowcock result from each section over their three rounds will proceed to the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon to decide the two clubs that will battle it out in the Monday morning final. Avoca’s performance in Section Two during the Pennant Season, which was conducted over 10 Sectional Rounds, saw them only lose two games. Avoca went down to Ettalong Memorial in Round Nine and were defeated by The Greens, The Entrance,
in Round 10, while Ettalong Memorial suffered three losses, one to Avoca in the first half, Terrigal and The Greens in the second half. Avoca emerged the winner of Section Two by 1.5 points from Ettalong Memorial. Avoca’s win against Ettalong Memorial put them into the Final against Section One winner Halekulani and, although it was close in the early stages of the match, Avoca’s relentless pressure saw them gain the upper
hand and win. “This is the first time in the 52 years history of the club that Avoca Beach has won the much coveted No1 flag and I congratulate all of our players on their performance right through the Pennant Season,” said Avoca Beach Bowling Club president Ashley Ayre. Avoca is in full practice mode for the State Grade One Pennant Finals, with the teams honing their skills during matches at home as well as at the host venue The
Greens, The Entrance. Avoca’s side consists of Team One, Team Two and Two Three. Team One includes Garry Macfadyen (L), Justin Shelley (second), Jason White (third) and Brett Pritchard (skip). Team Two consists of Jeff Doyle (L), Alan Lewin (second), Waylon Pritchard (third) and Anthony Shoebridge (skip). Team Three includes Richard Love (L), Terry Gains (second), Lawrence Bartlett (third) and Kevin Bowcock

The Greens, The Entrance Bowling Club is in serious preparation for the event, purchasing a high resolution projector and big screen, which is will be mounted in the club house to display the progressive score on every rink every 20 minutes during play on all three days.

Alan Rhodes wins Umina Major Singles
by Ian Jarratt
lan Rhodes defeated Joe Ednie 31-15 in Umina Beach Men’s Bowling Club’s Major Singles for 2012.
A
In a tight match, it was anyone’s game; however, at the 19th end Alan’s
experience and control started to have an impact on the game and finally wore Joe down. It was a good effort by Joe to reach what was his first major final and Alan praised his effort and indicated that the game was a lot closer than the final
score indicated. This is the fifth Major singles that Alan has won at Umina and he now stands one game short of equaling the six time winners by the club’s legends Noel Barron and Barry Hicks.

osford City Bowling Club celebrated 80 years of existence with its annual members day on Saturday, July 21, when 87 members attended with representatives from Bowls NSW, Group 15 and the women’s bowling club.
G
The day commenced at 11am with drinks and a hot meal provided by the women’s bowling club social committee under the leadership of Betty May. Following lunch, toastmaster Wes Lascock commenced the official part of the day with the customary Royal Toast that introduced president John Gifford who in turn welcomed the official guests. Kevin Dring responded on behalf of Bowls NSW and Doug Rose represented Group 15. Bowls NSW. Merit awards were
presented to Ken Scaysbrook and Neville Mansfield. Ken is the club members recorder and Neville works tirelessly maintaining the club grounds. Group 15 awards were bestowed on Warwick Ellis and Graeme Norris who both work maintaining club grounds. The clubs O.B.E. awards (Over Bloody Eighty) were given to Elwin Bellette, Rolf Scherd and Jack Leet. Under extremely cold conditions, bowls commenced at 1.30pm and bowlers played for the Keith Rumbelow Trophy. Keith was the instigator for the bowling club’s existence. When Bluetongue Stadium was being constructed, it was planned to abolish the bowling club, which, at that time, had a two story clubhouse and three greens. Through Keith’s tireless work, the club survived the loss of the two story clubhouse and one green.
The day wound up with the presentation of the Keith Rumbelow trophy being presented to Bob Sharky, Bob Cromack and Arthur Hextal.

All course material will be provided for the $15 course fee and attendees will receive a Laws of Cricket Booklet. The Central Coast Cricket Association (CCCA) and Central Coast Cricket Umpires Association (CCCUA) are encouraging past and present players to take the course and to then put their knowledge and qualification to use
by umpiring at senior and junior competition and representative matches. Opportunities exist for aspiring umpires to progress through the ranks of NSW and Australian umpiring circles to officiate at the highest levels of cricket. This is a good place to start and the CCCUA provides lots of support for new and old umpires.

Clean sweep for Umina over Terrigal A by Ian Sonter
he Umina Bunnies open grade, first grade and second grade teams have recently defeated Terrigal.
T
The Open Grade came through to record a solid 22 all draw with Terrigal after some very late withdrawals. With forwards Joel Sonter, Daniel Hill and Chad Walsh leading the way against much bigger opposition, they enabled the backs to still play some enterprising football. Scorers were Brendan Neal, Daniel Howell, Kody Morgan and Nathan Shanks with one try each, and Nathan also adding three goals. The second grade side compiled another impressive nil score line to the opposition while posting 18 points on the Sharks. While in control of the scoreboard, a few errors in attack saw some additional scoring opportunities go by the wayside throughout the game. But there was a defensive effort by all, especially for the first 15 minutes of the second half when Terrigal were camped inside the Bunnies’ 40m line. A great team effort was led by Terry O’Sullivan, Dave Murry and Dean Knott in the forwards, ensuring victory. The Bunnies scorers were Dean Kerr with two,
Mick Cavers with one, and Dave Murray with one, while Shane O’Sullivan scored one goal. First grade compiled a faultless first half performance against competition leaders Terrigal running in five tries with four goals to lead 28-nil at halftime to eventually run out the 34-18 winners. With the Bunnies being so dominant in the first half, a Sharks fight back was expected, with Terrigal running in three tries to the Bunnies one in the second half. But with the halftime score, it was a game never in doubt as the time ticked down. With Mitch Finnigan and Todd Maloney leading the way, the Bunnies younger brigade stood tall with James Hickey, Brodie Finnigan , Brett Sonter and Shane Lewis in forwards battle and Ernie McGillicuddy, Jeremy Williams in the backs being prominent in a great team effort. Try scorers included Todd Maloney with three, Ernie McGillicuddy with one, Mitch Finnigan with one and Luke Serevi with one and Ben Brooks adding five goals. Umina Bunnies legends Todd Maloney, Jamie Feeney (Erina) and Beau Woodley (Kincumber) have made the 2012 Country firsts Touring Team.

Aaron wins player of the week grant
aron Redhead of Woy Woy Junior Football Club has won the AAMI-Country Rugby League Player and Club of the Week award.
Aaron has won a $250 Harvey Norman Gift Voucher for himself and a $1000 grant for his club. AAMI sponsorship manager Mr John Bennetts said the program, which has been issuing grants to football clubs in regional NSW for nine years, supports the code at a grassroots level which is a great opportunity to inspire and encourage up and coming players. “AAMI is proud of our partnership with the CRL. “Over the last nine years we have acknowledged some fantastic players who are brilliant representatives not only for their teams and clubs, but are strong role models for the code. “We are thrilled to be able to reward these players for showing dedication to their game, their club and their community,” said Mr Bennetts. Woy Woy Junior Football Club president Mr Tim McParlane said that the club wanted to show their appreciation for Aaron’s contribution to the club by nominating him for the grant. “Aaron really is a brilliant role model for all the juniors. “He was nominated and voted in as the 2012 Club Captain for Woy Woy, he captains our U16s side and he trains the U9s. “On the field, Aaron is a ferocious defender who plays above his weight every week. “He’s a mini-Paul Gallen in the making. “Aaron’s contribution off the field is just as valuable. “He helps out on the barbecue and in the canteen where he can. “He also dedicates his offfield time studying to become a first aid officer for our home games. “We’re so proud of Aaron’s achievements and dedication to the club. “The club is grateful for the AAMI-CRL grant and we’re looking forward to investing the money into training equipment to develop our players further,” added Tim. Every Sunday until the September 2, AAMI is recognising the exceptional contributions of a CRL player with a $250 Harvey Norman gift voucher and rewarding their club with a $1000 grant. CRL chief executive officer Mr Terry Quinn commented

that over the years winning clubs have put the money to great use, by putting it towards big ticket items like facilities upgrades or purchasing jerseys. “This grant of $1000 is a fantastic boost to clubs’ fundraising efforts, and can help make sure they have new equipment or uniforms. “Quite apart from the money, this program also acknowledges those players who have not only achieved great things individually, but who have worked for the benefit of their clubs. “We strongly encourage everyone to get involved,” Mr Quinn said. Entry details for the AAMICRL Player and Club of the Week competition can be obtained on-line at www. CRLNSW.com.au and the winners will be announced each Sunday on 2GB during the Ray Hadley Continuous Call program.

Cricket show case at Mt Penang
by Aidan Cuddington
ricket NSW Game Development brought together the cricket community at Mt Penang Parklands on Monday, July 23, to outline the future of cricket in NSW in the second of seven regional roadshows across the state over the next two months.
C
In a show of support to all cricket stakeholders, Cricket NSW Game Development general manager Mr Cameron French and his team presented to the Central Coast Cricket Association. The purpose of the Regional Roadshows is to communicate the findings of the Australian Cricket Roadshow held at Rooty Hill, as well as inform cricket publics of the key action items of the Cricket NSW Game Development team for the season ahead. “Cricket has always had a tremendous volunteer workforce. “The Game Development team is determined to communicate closely with community cricket personnel, as well as leverage their wealth of ideas and knowledge on our great game,” said French. In addition to sharing views on the various opportunities and challenges that face grassroots cricket, the event gave cricket’s community stakeholders the chance to understand the strategic plans of NSW and Australian cricket, which aim to unify Australian cricket from top to bottom.

undreds of spectators gathered to watch Surf Life Saving Australia’s IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) Championships over the weekend of July 20 to 22 at Ocean Beach.

Five states and the Northern Territory went head to head in the Interstate tournament, with Queensland winning the state title for their second consecutive year, gaining a total point score of 56 out of a possible 63 points. Over the next two days, 50 clubs from around Australia competed for the national title which was claimed by Kurrawa SLSC
in Queensland. Surf Life Saving Australia’s general manager of sport Mr Dave Thompson said that 2012 had been another successful year for the IRB’s. “The calibre of the racing here at the IRB’s has exceeded previous years. “Despite the cold and windy weather, we saw dynamic racing by competitors who brought a high level of skill to the event, a true reflection of how Australian lifesavers operate on our beaches. “On behalf of Surf Life Saving Australia, we’d like to give a special thanks to the Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club for hosting the event in its most popular year yet.”
SLS tackles drowning deaths by Donna Wishart
urf Life Saving NSW has embarked on a major project to help reduce coastal drowning deaths by assessing every beach and rock platform in NSW over the next few years.
S
The first phase of the project will target priority black spots for coastal drownings and Wyong Shire has been fast-tracked in the assessment process due to
several recent rock fishing tragedies. Through the NSW Water Safety Black Spot Fund, the project is being managed by Surf Life Saving NSW using the expertise of Australian Coastsafe, a wholly-owned business unit of Surf Life Saving Australia. With the goal of reducing coastal drowning deaths by 50 per cent by 2020, the project will create a working blueprint for a state-wide coastal drowning prevention strategy.

Mingara Aquatic Swim Club had 40 members participating in the event. The Mingara team placed second overall in the teams point score and received a further 65 top 10 places. Overall, the club scored nine gold medals, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals. Individual gold medal winners included 14 year old Lachlan Van-Tempest in the 200m Backstroke, 400 Individual Medley and the 400m Freestyle. 18 year old Keelan
Bridge, a senior member of the team, won gold in the 400 Individual Medley and placed second in the Boys Point Score. Cooper Woolley won gold in the 100m Butterfly, with the 11 year old competing against team mate Shaye Booth over a close four laps. Megan BurgessRobinson won the 14-yearold women’s 100m and 200m Backstroke. Multi Class swimmer, Troy Puttergill returned to form winning the 50m Backstroke. The 36 year old endured shoulder surgery earlier this year and consequently missed out competing for a place on the Paralympic Team. The 14 years Boys 4x50 metre Medley Relay Team of Christian Bentley, Daniel Sylvester, Joshua Peoples and Lachlan Vane-Tempest defeated Springwood to claim gold. Other medallists included Ling Gribble, Viena Fonua, Emilie Leslie, Bradley Woodward, Matthew

This is the first time the event has been hosted in Australia with the Central Coast Baseball Association successful in their bid to host it this year. The International Boys league was formed in 1982. Its purpose was and remains today to foster international goodwill and friendship by holding a world youth baseball tournament each year. Osaka, Japan held the inaugural World Boys tournament in 1982, which comprised of four Japanese teams and four foreign teams.
Team sizes are typically 18 players and four support staff plus family and friends. In 1973, the Japan Boys League wanted to send a team of their 14-15 year olds to California to play a series of friendship games. Their goal was to promote International understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States. They asked P.A. Shibata, a well-known and respected Japanese businessman living in Hayward, to make this dream possible. Mr Shibata arranged games against teams from
Hayward, Santa Maria and Gardenia. The Japanese team at that time stayed at local hotels throughout their visit. Similar trips occurred in 1975 and 1977. Alameda first became aware of these games in 1977. Several Alameda Babe Ruth board members went to see the games. When they learned that the Japanese players were staying in hotels, they offered to host the Japanese players in Alameda homes the next time they came to the Bay Area.
As a result, when the Japan Boys League asked Mr Shibata in 1978 to form a team to go to Japan for two weeks of friendship games, they asked Mr Shibata to bring a team from the San Francisco Bay Area. Mr. Howard Zenimura of Fresno was asked to manage the team. Member families of the Japan Boys League graciously invited the young American players to stay in their homes during their visits. In 1979, the Japan Boys League team came to California again, with

he NSW Country B a s e b a l l Championships were held at Fred Finch Oval, Berkeley in the Illawarra from Friday, July 13, to Sunday, July 15, with Central Coast teams representing the region across all age divisions from U10s to U18s.

Coasties U12s won their division undefeated across all seven games, beating Newcastle in the final in what was a strongly contested game with 0-0 scores up to the fifth inning with Coasties pulling away to win 4-1 in the final innings. After taking the country championships, last year the U10s were runners up this year in a nail biting final game against Illawarra losing by just one run. Coasties U14 and U16s teams came third.
Alameda, Fresno and San Diego offering home stay for the young Japanese players during the trip. In 1980, a San Diego team led by Al Alvarado went to Japan, and in 1981 a small tournament was held in Gardenia, California with teams from Japan, Mexico and California participating. By this time it was common practice for the host country to house the young players of foreign teams. During the succeeding years, teams from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Taiwan, Cuba, Guatemala, Italy, Puerto Rico, South Korea, two from Mexico (Rojo - or Red - from Baja California, and Verde - or Green - from Mainland Mexico) and six from the United States (Alameda, Castro Valley, Fairfield, Fresno, Hawaii and San Diego) have participated in these tournaments.
