Labor Party wins A Ward – Greens miss out t the time the Wyong Regional Chronicle went to press, Australian Labor Party (ALP) candidates for election to Wyong Council had received the highest number of first preference votes in A Ward with a total of 12,087 votes.

A Ward’s ALP, headed by Cr Doug Vincent, received 30.10 per cent of the formal vote with a quota of 1.81 giving the group a possibility of two councillors being elected. This would see the ALP’s number two candidate, Mr Ken Greenwald join Cr Vincent on Council for the first time. The A Ward Liberal party candidates trailed closely behind with 28.56 per cent of the formal vote and a quota of 1.71. The A Ward Liberal

ticket is headed by Mr Luke Nayna, who at 24, is set to be Wyong Council’s youngest ever councillor. Current A Ward Independent Cr Greg Best is certain to serve another term, with 19.11 per cent of the formal vote and a quota of 1.15. A Ward Save Tuggerah Lakes’ candidate, Mr Adam Troy, is also expected to gain a seat, with 12.75 per cent of the formal vote and a quota of 0.80. Current Central Coast Greens Cr Sue

Wynn polled the lowest in A Ward at the time the Chronicle went to press, at just 8.9 per cent, and it is unlikely she will serve another term with a quota of only 0.53. A final declaration of the poll was planned for Friday, September 14, but counting was still taking place and the declaration was postponed until the following week. Liberals dominate at council election Central Coast First and the Greens were the big losers. Once having two councillors, including last year’s mayor Cr Laurie Maher, Central Coast First look unlikely to retain any seats. It gained only 52 per cent of the number of votes required for a councillor to be elected in his own right. The Greens suffered a swing away from them of 4.4 per cent, down to 10.4 per cent of the vote, and will lose one of their two seats on the previous council. A trial run was carried out and was witnessed by representatives from Council, Roads and Maritime Services and NSW Police. The consensus from those representatives was that the route be approved. iming is everything and Australia’s Skud 18 crew couldn’t have asked for anything more on day four of the London 2012 Paralympic Sailing Regatta on Portland Harbour.

After a long day of competition, which included two abandoned races, Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch came off the water exhausted, but with spirits high after finishing second and first in the day’s two races. “It was a long day waiting for the wind, we had two false starts as the wind kept changing, but we had a really good day,” said Fitzgibbon. “Liesl and I were on fire, we played with the fleet a lot and sailed people back a bit.” In race one the Aussie crew looked to be in trouble

when they went around the top mark in second last position but that was due to the changing wind and luckily for the duo, the race was abandoned and restarted. Fitzgibbon and Tesch have only been sailing together since 2011. With just three races left in the competition (at the time Grandstand went to press) Australia sit in first place with a handy four point lead over the USA who are second on a count back from Great Britain. “We’re in sync as a team, and finally I’m in sync with what I need to be doing out on the water,” said Tesch of Woy Woy. “Every single race I get a better understanding of sailing and what my responsibilities are about,” said Tesch. “Historically, we perform better at the end of a regatta.”

Woman killed in pedestrian crash at Toukley

olice will prepare a report for the Coroner after the death of an elderly woman who was struck by a car at Toukley on Tuesday, September 11.

Shortly after 12.45pm, emergency services were called to a supermarket car park on Canton Beach Rd after reports that a car had struck a pedestrian. Investigators believe that an 87-year-old woman was attempting to park her BMW sedan in a parking space when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. As the car moved forward it struck the kerb, crossed a concrete path and went through some shrubs.

Phil Heaton from Budgewoi Dunecare udgewoi Beach Dunecare has taken home the Biodiversity Conservation Award as part of the 2012 Sustainable Cities Awards, which coincided with Keep Australia Beautiful Week from Monday, August 20, to Sunday, August 26.

Power restored to homes and businesses

mergency crews from Ausgrid managed to restore power to approximately 7300 homes and businesses in parts of Wyong, Tuggerah and Dooralong, after disruptions on Friday, September 7.

Power supply was interrupted to the area until 4.50 pm in the afternoon, after a fault on

a transformer at Wyong zone substation. Ausgrid said crews worked as quickly and

The car then struck a bench on which a 70-year-old woman was sitting, facing away from the car park. Both were propelled into a nearby shopfront and the pedestrian was trapped by the vehicle. A number of bystanders came to the woman’s aid and released her from between the shop front and car. A m b u l a n c e paramedics attended a short time later and conveyed the 70-year-old

woman to John Hunter Hospital but she could not be revived. The driver was spoken to at the scene and taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing. “I am satisfied that the Government is committed to ensuring the remaining rounds of the Regional Development Australia Fund are developed and put forward,” said Mr Thomson. “This freeze will not affect potential projects for which submissions have already been lodged.” In his speech at Parliament House, Mr Crean addressed the issue amidst claims the funds would be frozen or potentially diverted to other programs. “I’m here to speak in relation to the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) and Barnaby Joyce’s assertions (in regard to freezing funds),” said Mr Crean. Watanobbi fires deliberately lit olice have charged a 12-year-old boy following an incident on Sunday, September 9, when a house was allegedly broken into and a bush fire started at Watanobbi.

Shortly after 11:30am, police and fire fighters were alerted to a bush fire near Alison Rd at Wyong. The fire had multiple ignition points and police were informed that three young people were seen running from the area. The fire rapidly escalated and headed directly towards the F3 Freeway causing substantial disruption to traffic. The F3 was closed in both directions due to thick smoke and safety concerns for motorists. Southbound traffic

was stopped at Sparks Rd, Warnervale, while northbound traffic was at a standstill at Cobbs Rd, Mardi, until traffic was diverted onto the Old Pacific Highway. The F3 did not fully reopen until the fire threat had been eliminated just after 3:40pm. Around 80 hectares of bushland was burnt during the blaze. Investigators said they believed a home was broken into on Sommers Rd on Sunday morning where it was suspected several items were stolen

and used to ignite the fire. The offender then used the items as an accelerant and started fires in bushland near Alison Rd. Officers then arrested a 12-year-old local boy and took him to Wyong Police Station with his mother. He was later charged with steal from dwelling and damage property by fire and granted conditional bail to appear at Wyong Children’s Court on Tuesday, October 2. Coast Connect Day in Lake Haven for “those doing it tough”

esidents of Wyong Shire were invited to attend the 2012 Coast Connect Day, held at Gravity Youth Centre in Lake Haven on Thursday, September 13.

In its sixth year, the initiative aims to unite people who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless or doing it tough with the support and services they need. Gosford Council’s manager of community

and cultural development Ms Sue Verhoek said Coast Connect Day was an important community event that brought together a wide variety of people living on the Central Coast. “The event has grown

from strength to strength since it began in 2008 and its continuing popularity is an indication of how vital these services are within our region. “In 2011 we had over 650 people attend the event,” said Ms Verhoek.

New sewage pumping station in Blue Haven

yong Council has invested $1.5 million in the construction of a new sewage pumping station in Blue Haven, as part of Council’s ongoing maintenance and rehabilitation program of the region’s water and sewer network.

Construction of the pumping station began in July and is expected to be completed by January next year. Works are currently underway to install 500 metres of sewer pumping main between the existing pumping station on Birdwood Dr (south) and the new pumping station on Birdwood Dr (north). The original pumping station was built in the early 1990s and since that time, an additional 1800 properties have been built in the surrounding area which has put extra demand on the pumping station.

“Ensuring our residents have access to quality water and an effective sewerage system is a priority for Council,” said Council’s director of infrastructure management Mr Greg McDonald. “The Blue Haven pumping station is just one of the investments Council has planned over the next six months to improve water and sewerage services in the region.” As part of these works, Council has contracted McNamee Constructions Pty Ltd to construct the sewer pumping main,

which will connect the existing pumping station with the new pumping station. This work will begin this month and continue until approximately the end of October. Construction crews will undertake the works Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm, and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays. At approximately 8pm, police from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command were called to Dooralong after reports a 42-year-old had gone missing while on a bushwalk with her two dogs. Police established a command post and were able to make contact with the woman via her mobile phone. The woman had made a camp fire and said she was in good spirits. Extensive searches were carried out by officers on foot during

the night. They were assisted by a police dog and from the air by the Lifesaver helicopter and ambulance helicopter. A rescue helicopter found the woman just before 7am on Wednesday, September 5, and a crew was winched in. The woman and her two dogs were guided out to safety on foot. Ray Rauscher came to the Central Coast in 1978 as Wyong Council’s first Social Planner. At that time, Council’s total staff in community services was Mr Rauscher and a youth worker. Councils across NSW have moved since then more boldly into community services, social planning and more recently, sustainable urban planning. It was from 1978 onwards that Mr Rauscher worked with a number of keen Central Coast people in the areas of heritage, environmental protection and social justice.

His involvement in the Central Coast scene has been through a number of forward thinking groups. He has worked with the Wyong District Museum and Historical Society from 1978, as well as a planned museum for Wyong Shire. On another front, he enjoyed working with Allan and Beryl Strom who completed environmental studies with residents of Wyong Valleys and TuggerahMardi areas. The Tuggerah Lakes Cycleway Group formed in 1979 with an aim to introduce cycleways as

there were none at the time. Finally, the good works of the Central Coast Social Developmental Council (CCSDC) commenced in 1972, were bearing fruit in 1978. The CCSDC was facing closing down by 1984, given the failure of the Federal Government to continue this successful Whitlam initiative. The Central Coast has always represented a sluice gate of population movement, bringing ideas to the Coast. With the new residents mixing with the more established ones, the

Two hundred students from three dozen schools competed in separate primary and secondary competitions, with each player participating in a minimum of five games throughout the course of the day.

he Central Coast office of the HunterCentral Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has moved offices from Gosford to the town centre of Wyong.

The move to Wyong had been on the drawing board for some time and once suitable offices were found, staff moved forward to ensure a smooth transition into the new premises. CMA Central Coast Catchment coordinator Mr David Green said it was important for the CMA to be located in a spot that was central to their clients and also the catchment community. The Central Coast landscape of the CMA covers the local government areas of Lake Macquarie and Wyong and also the Brisbane Water catchment area of the Gosford local government area. “The role of the CMA is to help our local Central Coast community better protect our environment in the areas of

“This expo is a great opportunity to present on the preparation and submission of applications for small business, with the focus on home business,” said Council’s manager of development assessment Mr Peter Fryar. “There are many things to consider before starting up a business at home, and often people overlook the fact that Council approval is required. “A business set up from home should not have a detrimental effect on neighbours in terms of parking, increased traffic flows and obviously even noise. “It also must not interfere with the amenity of the neighbouring properties.

Woongarrah GP Super Clinic opens esidents in one of the Central Coast’s fastest growing areas now have access to a state of the art medical centre with the opening of the new GP Super Clinic at Woongarrah on Friday, August 31.

The Federal Government provided $2.5 million towards the Super Clinic, which houses a range of general practitioner and allied health services to meet the area’s demands. “I’m glad that the Federal Government was able to provide the kick start needed to get this state of the art facility off the ground,” said Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Mr Anthony Albanese. “Local people told us they really needed a proper medical centre so they would not have to travel so far to see a doctor and other health practitioners.” Member for Dobell Mr Craig Thomson said he was proud to have helped secure the funding for the Super Clinic, which is located in the midst of

several growing suburbs in the Warnervale area. “The demand for medical services in this area has been shown at the temporary clinic nearby, which saw 50,000 patients in less than two years,” said Mr Thomson. “That number of people shows the amount of pressure taken off the Wyong Hospital emergency department. The operators of the new GP Super Clinic, Warnervale Medical Services, started seeing some patients at the new building the week prior to its opening. “The GP Super Clinic also has reached agreements with universities for teaching and training in all health disciplines and has plans to lead the way with training workshops,”

osford Cr Peter Freewater has said so long to local government after his nine candidate party failed to submit its nomination forms in time.

All of the nomination forms for Central Coast Alliance were completed and handed to one of the candidates on Cr Freewater’s ticket to submit while he was in Scotland supporting his son in the world championships of highland dancing. “This person decided to wait until half an hour before the close of nominations to submit the paperwork and then realised that they hadn’t brought the form with all the candidates’ signatures. “Subsequently, they went home to look for it and

by the time they got back, nominations had closed. “Therefore, not only did they not submit the group nomination, they didn’t submit [the forms for] any of the candidates at all. “That’s it - all over red rover,” said Cr Freewater. The person handling the nominations for the Central Coast Alliance came into the ofﬁce of Ducks Crossing Publications shortly after nominations had closed to cancel booked advertising in view of missing the deadline. He said he was “devastated” in missing the

nominations by one minute and was too upset to make further comment. Number ﬁve on the ticket Mr Jake Cassar said he was disappointed and it was unfortunate it was left until the last half an hour. “I guess the whole group should take some responsibility to a point. “It’s remarkable how it could come down to those last few minutes, but rules are rules. “The real losers in this are the community because I think we had a really, really great team of genuine community leaders that are

out there in the community making a difference. “Me personally, I’m not deterred from any of the things I’m doing for the environment and social justice,” he said. Cr Freewater said he had worked hard for the last four years to clean up Gosford Council and had made a pretty good ﬁst of it. “I saved Coastal Open Space System (COSS) from getting a recreation zoning that would allow sporting ﬁxtures and hotels; I got the entrance [to Brisbane Water] dredged so boats wouldn’t get trashed on the rocks; I helped secure Bambara. “I showed the community that they can stand up to Gosford Council and

expose them. “I also played a major role in the retiring of the general manager and so now we can make a clean start with a new one. “My concern is that many of the old councillors will still be there and I believe it would be better if the new Council were to grow out of fresh, fertile soil. “So with this in mind, please don’t vote Labor, Liberal, Central Coast First or Craig Doyle; you’ll just be throwing the same old fertiliser on the new general manager. “I think Kate da Costa and Hillary Morris would be excellent councillors if you don’t mind the fact that they’re Greens.

“I’d like to thank all those people in the community that have supported me and written to me or called me to thank me for things I’ve done. “It was really good to hear people say ‘thank you’. “I’m just sorry I won’t be there for another term to ‘keep up the good ﬁght’,” said Cr Freewater. He said he would now be able to return to being a marine scientist and spending more time with his family. orah Head Panthers Hockey Club has raised over $11,000 from its McGrath Foundation charity week held from Tuesday, August 14 to Sunday, August 19, which saw members of the club wearing pink for the week’s matches.

“We have over 200 members in our club, from the youngest who are sixyears-old to our eldest member who turns 70 this year,” said club member Ms Mel Moore. “We are the first ever to hold such event in Central Coast Hockey. “I secured some sponsors that covered the cost of the shirts with their logos on the back and in turn after the round had completed, they were sold off to club members and the money went straight to the McGrath Foundation. “We wore pink shirts and pink socks to mark this occasion instead of our normal blue and yellow that we usually wear. “We had a busy week with cake stalls, sausage sizzles, gifts, raffles and a special silent auction of a 2012 signed and framed Kookaburras (men’s hockey team) Olympic squad shirt, which reached the total figure of $950.

“All the cakes for the stall were donated by our generous club members who were only too happy to help raise funds for the McGrath Foundation that help fund breast care nurses across Australia. “Our raffle consisted of many donated prizes such as our first prize; a signed Casey Eastham Hockey stick (Captain of the women’s Australian hockey team). “Second prize was a signed shirt, also by Casey, that was very kindly donated by Gosford Hockey Club. “Our round was a complete success and we ended up raising $11,315.33 for the foundation. “I, alongside our club president, met with the cofounder of the foundation, Tracy Bevan last week and presented her with a cheque,” said Ms Moore. Wyong students participate in bike safety activities emale students from Year 7 at Wyong Christian Community School attended the CARES bike safety centre at Palmdale on Thursday, August 30.

The students were split into four teams and participated in a number of activities including an obstacle course, talks on how to adjust a bike to their correct height and a smart board activity which outlined the dangers of the road. Students then rode on the outdoor track and

Thomson not happy with funding cuts to schools ederal Member for Dobell Mr Craig Thomson has spoken out about the State Liberal and National Government’s cuts to local schools and TAFE colleges on the Central Coast.

“This is the biggest cut to education in 20 years, since the last time the Liberals-Nationals were in Government in NSW,” said Mr Thomson.

“They’re freezing funding to every single local Catholic and Independent school. “They’re cutting funding to our public

schools and cutting TAFE teachers as well as putting up fees. “Whenever a Liberal Premier picks up an axe, schools are first to face the chop. Mr Thomson said the State Coalition MPs on the Central Coast are sitting back and doing nothing while these cuts Pick of the crop are occurring. “Yet again, Chris Hartcher, Chris Holstein, Chris Spence and Darren Webber are either unwilling or unable to Pick of the Crop CD4 stand up for the Central Coast. “Every child in every local school will feel the pain of the state Pick of the Crop CD5 Coalition’s savage cuts, and our TAFE campuses at Gosford, Ourimbah and Wyong will be badly affected by this move. “This state government is destroying our local schools and TAFE colleges with their harsh cuts”, said Mr Thomson.

Dung beetle trap

andholders in the Tuggerah Lakes Catchment Area are being offered the opportunity to explore the use of dung beetles on their properties to aid in the control and use of nutrients, at a free half day workshop on Tuesday, September 25, at Jilliby.

The workshop will be presented by leading dung beetle expert Mr John Feehan who is a former member of the CSIRO team tasked with introducing bovine dung beetles into Australia. Known as “the Farmer’s Friend”, Mr Feehan is an entomologist and recognised authority on dung beetles in Australia. Every day, more than half a million tonnes of dung is dropped onto Australian pastures, locking up nutrients and creating a breeding ground for bush flies, buffalo flies and other pests. Dung beetle colonies are capable of burying

manure left by a herd of 450 cattle in less than a day. Workshop participants will find out which species of dung beetle is the most suitable for their area and would give the best results throughout the seasons. People who have dung beetles on their property are invited to bring along some live specimens for identification and advice on how to tailor livestock management practices to reduce chemical destruction of the beetles, especially at the larval stage. Central Coast Sevens to include Academy Womens’ team he Central Coast Academy of Sport Women’s Rugby Sevens team met and trained together on Saturday, September 1, at Central Coast Grammar School in the lead up to their debut at the Central Coast Sevens International Rugby Festival on Saturday, October 27, at Wyong Leagues Club.

This will be the first time a local women’s team will participate in the tournament. The event will feature 12 women’s teams from around Australia alongside the 16 men’s teams and 12 team schoolboy events. Tournament director Mr Craig Morgan expressed his excitement at the creation of the Central Coast’s latest women’s sporting team. “Women’s rugby has exploded in popularity, with the games inclusion in the Olympics from 2016 and the general exciting nature of sevens girls are really taking to the sport.

“We identified that there were no avenues currently open to women on the Coast to play rugby locally so we decided to create the opportunity and the response has been excellent,” said Mr Morgan. The team will comprise 12 girls for the tournament, some with previous rugby experience and several who currently play other sports such as OZTag, touch and soccer. It is hoped the team would spark further interest from women on the Coast. The team will be run by the Central Coast Academy of Sport with

Central Coast Academy of Sport acknowledges Councils’ support he Central Coast Academy of Sport (CCAS) has acknowledged both Wyong and Gosford Council’s support of the Academy.

Since the Academy’s establishment in 2004, Wyong and Gosford Council have both provided support towards the Academy’s sporting programs and development of local athletes. “The CCAS has received wonderful ongoing support from Wyong Shire Council and Gosford City Council since our early beginnings,” said CCAS managing director Mr Ian Robilliard.

“Under the leadership of Bob Graham and Laurie Maher, respectively, sport in general on the Central Coast has benefited greatly through the financial support and provision of services from both Councils. “Cr Graham has been a great friend of the Academy of Sport. “Sport is a vital aspect of the Central Coast community and Bob is certainly understanding of this, most specifically through his role on

Mariners acquire Sheffield’s Nick Montgomery he Central Coast Mariners have agreed to terms with highly experienced defensive midfielder Nick Montgomery for the forthcoming A-League season.

Montgomery joined the Central Coast from UK partner club Sheffield United after Blades chairman Kevin McCabe, who is also the director for the Central Coast Mariners, played an instrumental role in endorsing the Mariners club and culture to the player. Montgomery, 30, is a Sheffield United legend having progressed through the club’s youth ranks before making over 400 competitive appearances for Sheffield’s first team. Montgomery’s time with the Blades saw him feature in the Barclays Premier League as well as England’s tough and competitive second tier, currently known as the nPower Championship. Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said he believed Montgomery was the perfect addition to his squad. “All my contacts

in the UK can’t speak highly enough of Nick Montgomery,” Arnold said.

“He is a winner, a leader, and having lost Alex Wilkinson and Matt Simon recently, I knew it was crucial that we brought in a player who can influence not only a game, but the group as well. “Nick’s pedigree speaks for itself and, at 30, some of his strongest years of football are still

in front of him. “He is fit having undergone pre-season with Sheffield United,” said Arnold. he Central Coast Mariners were beaten 2-0 by Adelaide United on Wednesday, September 12, in Adelaide, in their first preseason clash against an A-League opponent.

The Mariners were not without chances in Adelaide and it was Central Coast’s attacking midfielder Tom Rogic who tested Adelaide custodian Eugene Galekovic twice during the first half. Ten minutes before the half-time interval, attacker Mitchell Duke fired at Galekovic but the goalkeeper was up to the task. John Hutchinson had a chance for Central Coast soon after the break, but again Galekovic denied Graham Arnold’s team. Adelaide broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. Mariners head coach,
