Constitutional recognition of local government is vital for federal funding he mayors of both Wyong and Gosford Councils have encouraged residents to support a campaign to give constitutional recognition to local government.

A referendum will be held at the upcoming September 14 Federal election and both Gosford and Wyong Councils have joined 85% of Councils around Australia to support the campaign for constitutional recognition. A high court decision ruled the federal government cannot directly fund local government, which puts federal government funding across the Central Coast at risk. If constitutional recognition is supported, this would allow for direct federal funding of local government. “The present climate means government grants are decreasing and it would be disastrous if we lost any type of federal funding,” Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said. “Local Government is the only level of government in Australia that is not financially recognised in the Australian Constitution and our income funding is limited in relation to the services we are expected to provide to our community. “Government funding is such a vital part of any

Council’s income and Wyong Shire Council has always been grateful for any funding we have received from the Federal and State Governments. “The Constitutional Recognition of Local Government will enable the Federal Government to have the capacity to fund Councils directly to achieve national objectives at a local level, such as major infrastructure projects and job creation ventures,” he added. majority of states. Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna encouraged all residents to support the referendum at the upcoming election. “Local Councils, including Gosford and Wyong, often rely heavily on federal funding to improve our roads and community facilities,” mayor Cr McKinna said. “By voting yes in the referendum, residents are voting to continue to access this funding, which contributes to many major projects in our local areas,” he added. Both Councils received

an $80 million grant from the Federal Government for the Mardi-Mangrove Link project, which has secured the region’s water supply. In Wyong, the Federal Government’s Caring for Country grant provided $20 million for the Tuggerah Lakes Estuary Management Program and $5 million for two new surf clubs at Shelly and Soldiers Beach. Other projects include $520,000 for a playground at Canton Beach which would be able to be used by visually impaired children, $400,000 for six new netball courts at Wyong’s Baker Park and $200,000 to upgrade community halls around the Wyong area and a number of grants to help complete Wyong’s shared pathway network. “Quite simply, federal grants are important for a number of projects right across the community,” mayor Cr Eaton said. “That is why it is so important people vote yes at the referendum to ensure this continues,” he concluded. Local highlights in national budget ital infrastructure projects and new and continuing community support programs were highlights for locals in the 2013-14 Budget, according to Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill.

The workshops will be used to provide information for the development of a new Destination Management Plan, which will provide an agreed vision for the direction of the tourism industry during the period of 2013 to 2016. The last decade saw a high point of 5.3 million visitors to the Central Coast in 2003. However, the number declined to 4.8 million the following year and has reduced further since. Last year’s total visitor count was 4.3 million. The Tourism Opportunity Plan attributed the decline to the global recession of 2008 through to 2012, a lack of new product to stimulate demand and repeat visitation, and low cost airlines which encouraged Australians to travel internationally. The Tourism Opportunity Plan forecasted that if its recommendations were adopted, the region would see a year-onyear increase of roughly 150,000 visitors. The Plan recommend the implementation of 44 investment and infrastructure opportunities for the purpose of improving the reduced visitor numbers the region has experienced across the past 10 years. Ms O’Neill welcomed the new investment and thanked the Coast community for their involvement. “New funding in the Budget will make a real difference for people on the Coast. “Whether it means more support for people with a disability through DisabilityCare Australia, or less time stuck in traffic with funding for the F3-M2. “I am proud to share these announcements with the Coasties who have signed my petitions and called for these commitments, but there is still more work to do,” Ms O’Neill said. Ms O’Neill highlighted the importance of ensuring that the Budget promoted job creation and economic growth for Australia’s future prosperity. “This Government has made targeted and responsible decisions, in line with our Labor values, to ensure that we are a stronger, smarter and fairer Australia. “We will always act responsibly to prioritise jobs to ensure that the economy works for more people. “With DisabilityCare Australia set in stone in this budget, Coasties can now be assured that they will benefit from one of the biggest social reforms in Australian history. “This government is proud to be bringing this issue to the forefront of policy discussions and community attention. “In the seat of Robertson, approximately 2,497 locals may be eligible for support under DisabilityCare when the scheme rolls out across the country. “To better nurture our young creative talent, this Budget will allocate $23,500 to each electorate to encourage, support and celebrate the participation

of young people in creative, cultural, academic and community events or training. “Gosford Council will be eligible to apply for one of 14 competitive grants of up to $375,000 to deliver innovative online local government services using the NBN. “Our local Broadband for Seniors kiosk will be eligible to receive extra funding for a new computer and touchscreen monitor, ensuring seniors can benefit from a wider range of interactive computer applications and programs. “Each kiosk will also be eligible to receive a grant to deliver training and information sessions on the importance of cyber safety and personal security. “For pensioners wanting to downsize their homes, the sting of losing chunks of their pension because of the sale is often discouraging. “Under a trial outlined in the Budget, eligible pensioners who want to downsize, can put at least 80% of excess sale proceeds (up to a max of $200k) into a special account that is exempt from the pensioner means test so that it won’t affect their pension. “In the electorate of Robertson, this could benefit around 15,830 pensioners who are home-owners. “The Federal Government is investing $5.5 million in Childcare Flexibility Trials to test innovative approaches to provide families with access to more flexible care options. “Gosford and Peninsula Family Daycare have received extra support to extend hours to better cater to the needs of our local police officers. “To better support families receiving the partnered Parenting Payment, Newstart Allowance and Widow, Sickness or Partner Allowance, the Federal

Government is increasing the amount recipients can earn before their payments are affected. “This means people can take home $494 extra per year and for the first time the income free area will also be indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 1 July 2015. “In the electorate of Robertson this will immediately benefit 1,038 people on income support currently earning over $62 a fortnight, and potentially benefit 3,994 more people should they move into work. “Labor established disability employment services in mid-2010 – getting rid of the cruel cap and quota based system that was put in place by the Howard government. “Now, everyone who needs help to find a job gets that help. “In the electorate of Robertson, this investment has seen 2,083 people placed in work since the program began. “This Federal Budget provides $84.5 million over four years for the provision of around 1,650 additional Commonwealth supported sub-bachelor and postgraduate places to universities. “In the electorate of Robertson, Labor’s uncapping of places has seen a 15.2% increase in students commencing University. “This is vital in ensuring that locals are able to access affordable university education, and are able to get the skilled jobs of the future,” said Ms O’Neill. Work on the 8km long tunnel under Pennant Hills Rd could start as early as next year with $400 million each being provided by the Federal and State Governments, with the remaining cost to be met by the private sector. “I have been fighting for the F3 to M2 link ever since I first became the candidate for Robertson, and it is still one of the single biggest issues that people talk to me about today,” said Member for Robertson Ms Deborah

O’Neill. “More than 3,000 people have signed my petition to have this vital piece of infrastructure built and constant pressure from the Central Coast community has made this announcement possible. “This is a major project and will take investment from both government and non-government sources to ensure that it is delivered. “This project will make a massive difference for commuters heading to

Sydney every day. “It will mean less time stuck in traffic, and more time at home with family. “If we can make sure this important road project is built, it will mean tens of thousands of motorists will be able to forget about the nightmare that is currently Pennant Hills Rd,” Ms O’Neill said. he Central Coast Mariners have given up an early lead to China’s Guangzhou Evergrande to go down 2-1 at Central Coast Stadium in the AFC Champions League Round of 16.

T

It was a passionate display by the Mariners who fought hard for 90 minutes but Mitchell Duke’s opening goal was not enough to overcome goals to Paraguayan superstar, Lucas Barrios and Brazillian hit man Muriqui. The home side flew out of the box with early speed and looked to have caught the visiting side by surprise with an early goal to the enthusiastic Duke. Bernie Ibini held the ball up perfectly on the corner of the 18 yard box and precisely chipped to the back post where Duke made himself horizontal to the ground and got enough of his right boot on the ball to beat Zeng Cheng in front of the Evergrande goal just eight minutes in, to put the home side a goal up. The yellow and navy took it to the Chinese Southern Tigers from the first whistle and held the majority of the field position in the opening 20 minutes of play, which offered Guangzhou no chance to attack. Guangzhou’s first real chance fell in the 21st minute of play as Zheng Zhi fired a powerful shot at Mathew Ryan who pushed the bullet away with his chest. The follow up fell to Dario Conca who attempted to

shoot but a lunging Patrick Zwaanswijk deflected his effort behind. The sleeping giants of China awoke in the 28th minute through danger man Lucas Barrios who jumped on the end of a ball that bobbled out of a 50-50 challenge just inside the area and drove home a forceful volley to level the ledger 1-1. Guangzhou’s goal did not deter the attacking force of the Mariners who continued to press high in the opposition’s final third and pieced together some beautiful football, especially between Ibini, Duke and Daniel McBreen. Despite plenty of attacking football from both sides, the first half drew to a close with no change to the 1-1 score line. The second half opened and it was again the Mariners who ignited from the start as McBreen ran onto a mouthwatering through ball to hit first time from a tough angle but found the keeper. Although, the away side returned serve at the other end of the pitch, as Goa Lin leapt above the pack to almost pull off a freakish bicycle kick that Ryan did well to tip over his crossbar. The twenty minute period that followed was equally contested and half chances fell at either end through the likes of McBreen, McGlinchey and Gunagzhou’s defender Zhang Linpeng who moved forward to help out but nothing clear cut fell until the 67th minute where the Mariners’ fans were brought to their feet.

It was McGlinchey who drifted across the top of the 18-yard box where the defence was hesitant to jump in which allowed him to sneak through a clever ball to McBreen who turned and shot first time but again found the gloves of Zheng. Like most of the match, the Mariners’ chance was countered at the other end quickly where Gao Lin

blasted a low and hard cross into the box which Muriqui charged and back-heeled. The chance looked as though it was going to just dribble over the line but Ryan did enough this time to squander the chance. Shortly after in the 76th minute, Muriqui had his chance to break the deadlock and put Guangzhou ahead and he did just that.

The skipper Zheng Zhi was the man who sent the cross in and it was chested down by Goa Lin for Muriqui to add the finishing touch with the inside of his boot and curled it by Ryan’s left hand giving him little chance to make a save. The tit for tat played its role once again and the Mariners did manage to burst straight back to the other end of the pitch, however they failed to convert, which allowed Muriqui to run away with possession shortly after. Muriqui’s break away could have easily hammered the nail in the coffin for the aggregate nature of the two-legged competition with another away goal, but Ryan stood tall and made a wonderful save to keep his team in the competition. In the 88th minute, Duke was almost the hometown hero as he struck a volley of his own from close range that squeezed through a group of players from both sides, but fortunately for Guangzhou, Zeng got down in time to stop the ball underneath him before it crossed the line. The 2-1 loss at home will make it a big ask for the Mariners to go across to China’s Tianhe Stadium and pick up a result, but all eyes now turn to May 22, where the sides will meet for the second leg to determine who qualifies for the quarter finals. After the match, Mariners’ coach, Graham Arnold said that the team had played very well but failed to take their chances and at this level, that was crucial. He said that both of the

opposition’s goals were from Mariners’ mistakes but that it was a huge effort by the Mariners against quality opposition. The visiting team was reportedly said to be worth $14m while the Mariners value is estimated to be around $2.5m. Guangzhou coach, Marcello Lippi praised the Mariners saying that they were a good team and very well organised. Graham Arnold said that the contest wasn’t over yet but the two away goals scored by the visiting said will make it a very difficult task to overcome in China next week. he 125th Gosford Regional Show was held over the weekend of April 4 and 5 with organisers estimating a crowd between 10,000 and 15,000. The show featured performances by award winning musical-circus duo Strings on Fire as well as a show by the Australian Reptile Park and an U18s talent quest. Genesis Gym’s NSW Strongman Titles were also held over the two days along with a Central Coast Bake-Off and Photography competition. The Showgirl competition was also well received with Kaitlin Watts of Terrigal taking out the title, Narara’s Ashley

Jarvis winning Runner Up and People’s Choice and Kanwal’s Toni McCarthy winning second runner up. The Junior Showgirl competition was won by Jasmine Cartner with

Chantia Macpherson runner up and Bianca June White winning second runner up. Gosford Regional Show co-coordinator Mr Chris King said they had received

“fantastic feedback” so far. Mr King said it was great to see families taking their kids along and having an “absolute ball”. “My favourite part was seeing happy people,

seeing families come together and celebrating something about our region that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. “You generally know over the weekend whether

it’s going to be well received and this one was wonderfully received,” said Mr King. When asked if the 125th show was any more memorable than previous years, Mr King said he didn’t like to compare them. “I think, it’s like musicals, each one has its own flavour and I think we are a bit remiss if we start to compare them. “It was certainly a wonderful celebration and something that everyone associated can be proud of and it really showcased our region to the max. “It was all really good; it was all lots of fun and I loved it all,” said Mr King.

the electrical works and fixtures and I am encouraging the Alison Homestead Men’s Shed Association to apply for further funding in the next round of Community Building Partnership Grants which opens in June this year. “This new shed is now a valuable addition to the many established Men’s Sheds on the Central Coast including four in the Wyong Shire, with another two under construction. “As a patron of this Association I welcome their continued expansion within the Wyong Shire.

“With an ever increasing population on the Central Coast, the Men’s Shed network continues to play a vital role in promoting and supporting men’s health activities through the provision of a safe environment that encourages the social inclusion of men and facilitates meaningful discussion within our community. “This will benefit men of all ages, particularly younger men who may no longer have contact with their fathers or grandfathers,” Mr Webber concluded.

Water rate price increase is below inflation y o n g Council has received the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s (IPART) report on water, sewerage and stormwater prices for the next four years.

W

The new prices will result in a gradual price increase of 7% or $73 in total from Monday, July 1, this year to Friday, June 30, 2017, for a typical residential water and sewerage bill. Mayor Cr Doug Eaton said IPART’s decision would severely impact Council’s capacity to undertake vital capital works over the next four years. “The approved water and sewerage price increases will not allow us to keep up with the basic costs of inflation, for example electricity costs, wages and materials,” he said. “In real terms, water rates for a typical Wyong Shire resident will actually decrease by $33

over the next four years. “Currently, Wyong Shire and Gosford City residents pay roughly the same amount for their water and sewerage services, but under the determination, the difference between the amount residents in the two local government areas pay for this essential service will widen to more than $200

per year (extra being paid by Gosford ratepayers). “Much of our capital works programs will be set back indefinitely, making it increasingly difficult to service an ageing system and a growing population. “Our community have already had to suffer through a significant drought and now IPART expect us to reduce vital

capital works all while the State Government is telling us to expect significant growth in population numbers and housing. “I am at a loss to explain how IPART can expect Council to operate under such conditions,” he added. Mayor Cr Eaton said Council had made a carefully considered

submission to IPART. “Our proposed works were carefully considered and planned to ensure we were delivering an efficient, safe and robust water supply system to our community,” he said. “The approved increases are significantly less than what we need and puts at jeopardy major works our community had been counting on.

“IPART have knocked back planned design and pre-construction works for the upgrade of the Mangrove Creek Dam spillway. “Maximising storage capacity was the next strategic step in securing our water supply system after the completion of the Mardi-Mangrove Link. “IPART’s decision could see the Central Coast storage levels limited to 80% for the foreseeable future. “There are some works that will just have to be done, despite the IPART decision, which means Council is going to have to tighten our belts even further. “This will mean making some hard decisions which won’t be easy on us or the community,” he concluded. Following a Council resolution, the new charges will come into effect from Monday, July 1, this year. Media release, 14 May 2013 Wyong Council Media

Twenty five year planning document endorsed The LEP is a document that establishes planning directions for the Shire over the next 25 years and beyond. “This is an extremely important document because it plans future land use in the Shire,” mayor Cr DougEaton said. “Since the

establishment of the Wyong LEP 1991 – which we are currently operating under – the Shire has and is now facing a range of different issues and challenges. “This new LEP, which Council has now endorsed, provided us with a great opportunity

to undertake a major review of all our current planning instruments and policies and as a result, we will create a better, more prosperous Wyong Shire.” While the LEP will now have to be gazetted by the Department of Planning, mayor Cr Eaton said he was excited about all

in the LEP are designed to boost investment and jobs in the Shire, streamline the process for establishing a business in a designated employment zone, and create affordable housing options for the Shire’s growing population,” he said. “For instance, we have proposed to have new height restrictions

establish more flexible uses of industrial zoned land both of which will increase economic development. “This Council is serious about stimulating investment and development in the Shire and creating local jobs for local people. “Our new Development Control Plan (DCP) – which was on public exhibition the same time as the LEP – simplifies Council’s requirements for investment to take place and makes it easier for investors to plan business in the Shire. “We don’t know what businesses will be around in 20 year’s time and who might want to invest in the Shire. “That is why, as part of the review, we have ensured our processes are more flexible.” The LEP also includes identification of a strategic location for a Type 3 regional airport for the Central Coast in the Bushells Ridge area, clauses to stimulate Town Centre renewal, reduction of lot sizes to stimulate affordable housing, provision of new enterprise corridors to attract innovative uses to the Shire and identification

jobs to the community. The LEP also ensures the natural amenity of the Wyong area will not be compromised with a focus solely on development. “We have made a great effort to look after our natural environment and ensure that it remains well into the future,” Mayor Eaton said. “We have not got rid of any environmental land and we aren’t proposing to develop on environmental land. “Mandatory clauses from the NSW State Government’s Standard Instrument related to Tree preservation and removal have been incorporated. “A specific objective of the clauses is to preserve the amenity of the area, including biodiversity values, through the preservation of trees and vegetation. “We want to maintain the natural beauty of our area while creating investment and jobs for our residents. “This is a very thorough document and it strikes the perfect balance in moving Wyong Shire forward,” he concluded. Regional airport included in endorsed planning document he draft Land Environment Plan (LEP) endorsed by Wyong councillors on Wednesday, May 8 identified land in the Shire’s north as the potential site of a future Type 3 regional airport.

T

The airport concept will now officially move to the next step, along with the LEP, which is to be gazetted by the NSW Department of Planning. Mayor Cr Doug Eaton said that it was “now or never” if Council hoped to secure an airport location for the Central Coast’s growing population, which is tipped to rival Canberra’s by 2030. “The draft LEP has identified land around the Bushell’s Ridge area in the Shire’s north as the potential site of a future regional airport,” mayor Cr Eaton said. “The reason we are keen to have this included in the draft LEP, which

is essentially a planning document that looks at the Shire over the next 20 years, is because there are only limited sites available for an airport. “If we don’t act now to reserve a possible location, these sites will be lost to other uses.” Mayor Cr Eaton said a future regional airport would provide enormous opportunities in the growing Shire of the future. “An airport will create local jobs, improve transport and attract industry and investment to the Shire,” he said. “We currently have youth unemployment figures higher than the

State average and we want to ensure there are future opportunities so the children of today have a brighter future.” Mayor Cr Eaton said that he knows some residents will have concerns. “Early indications are that the majority of residents across the Shire are in favour of a regional airport on the Central Coast that will help to grow jobs and the local economy into the future,” The Mayor said. “Many of the people in favour are the young people who will become the future of our Shire. “I can understand that residents may have

some concerns, and our commitment as a Council is that we will be open and transparent and we will listen to you. “It is important to note that it’s still early days. “We have endorsed the concept tonight, and it will now go to the Department of Planning to progress. “There will be years of planning required

including a series of studies and rigorous consultation before the airport may become a reality.” Mayor Cr Eaton said that he is confident a regional airport will put the Shire on the map. “In 10 years time, we want to be known as a prosperous region where people can get jobs locally,” he said.

“We want people to come and enjoy our beautiful natural environment, and encourage tourism. “Having a regional airport will help to give us a strong identity and a place people aspire to live and visit.” Media release, 8 May 2013 Wyong Council Media

Wynn is Greens candidate for Dobell

Tourism plan cites The Entrance as major tourism hub

ormer Wyong Councillor Ms Sue Wynn has been announced as the Central Coast Greens candidate for the seat of Dobell during a launch event at the Sydney Rainforest Nursery in Ourimbah on Saturday, May 11.

F

Ms Wynn is best known for her period as councillor from 2008 to 2012, during which she brought motions against the Wallarah 2 open cut coal mine and CSG, introduced regular

eWaste collections at Council, fought to protect wildlife corridors and opposed the rezoning of community land to operational land. Since the election last year, Ms Wynn has

continued to campaign against development on community land. Media release, 13 May 2013 Kate da Costa, Central Coast Greens

everal developments intended to turn The Entrance into a tourism hub for the Central Coast are currently under consideration.

As suggested by the Central Coast Tourism Opportunity Plan which was released earlier this month, the proposed developments include water features to be introduced at Memorial Park, new walkways and cycle ways at the North Entrance caravan park, a pre-university training facility for international students, and an 800 seat conference centre and four star, 250 room hotel adjoining the current Lakeside Plaza site, which would be redeveloped into a new high quality shopping centre at an estimated cost of $400m. The plan also recommended the

introduction of endurance focussed major events which would occur over two days and cater for up to 10,000 people. The Plan identified The Entrance as a key waterfront hub in the Wyong Local Government Area and noted that the proposed developments had the potential to transform the area and strengthen its position as a major tourism hub. Almost all of the development sites at The Entrance are privately owned and would therefore be funded independent of the Government, however many of the developments would

still require upgrades to public roads and Council approval for increased height limits. Further development in retail and food and beverage facilities, along with commercial accommodation and holiday letting, was predicted to occur spontaneously as a result of the realisation of the developments already proposed, which would in turn encourage more events to be held at The Entrance. Pioneer Dairy site seen as major tourism opportunity

A

n opportunity to develop a major sporting hub at Tuggerah’s Pioneer Dairy has been identified in the Central Coast Tourism Opportunity Plan.

The opportunity was ranked second in importance only to the proposed motorsports precinct at Wyong. The Plan stated that the site would ideally include eight to ten high quality sports fields, three amenities blocks, a small stadium with a capacity of 3,000, an indoor facility to cater for

three to four basketball courts, dormitory style accommodation for interschool and youth competitions, and an integrated sports administrative centre which would provide office facilities for a range of various sporting organisations that operate on the Central Coast. If developed as

planned, it was estimated that the hub could cater for up to 30 smaller events per annum, in addition to 12 larger events and 20 mid-week school events. The site was chosen for its proximity to Tuggerah Railway Station and the proposed Travelodge Hotel and Mariners Sports Centre of Excellence, with

which the sporting hub might form a mutually beneficial partnership. No detailed cost benefit analysis of the development has been undertaken, however the Plan estimated that the total development cost would fall within the range of $20m-$30m, with a $22m per annum return to the local economy through direct and indirect participant expenditure. The Central Coast

currently accounts for 5.4% of NSW’s overnight domestic sporting visitors, 6.7% day visitors and 1% international visitors. If a sports hub at Pioneer Dairy were able to increase NSW sporting visitors by 1% across all three segments, the region would receive an additional 40,000 visitors per year by 2020, which would amount to an additional $30m per annum in visitor spending

Councils living in the past

R

ecent media reports suggest our local government leaders are living in a time warp.

Just prior to a trip to China, Wyong mayor Doug Eaton found a need to embellish his status by wearing mayoral chains. An English tradition dating back to the 14th century, the chains apparently symbolise organisational and administrative ability and potential. In the week after the NBN was switched on in Gosford, Gosford mayor

Lawrie McKinna and two staff have found the need to fly to China to sign a sister city partnership deal with Ninghai. Apparently both cities are developing commercial enterprises in ecotourism. Don’t they know about

email? Local ratepayers are entitled to expect their mayors to earn their respect at home by leading improvements in Council performance in their respective local government areas, not jaunting overseas to China. E-mail, 14 May 2013 Kevin Armstrong, Tumbi Umbi

Australia Day history beliefs are inaccurate n honour of Australia Day, metropolitan and rural local newspapers all around the State carried stories that January 26 celebrated the landing of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove in 1788, and Governor Phillip’s formal declaration of the new colony.

I

Unfortunately these widely held beliefs are wrong. We’re being told all the time that it is important for young Australians to know more about their history. Surely it’s also important that what we’re telling them is accurate, especially when the accurate story is more interesting than many of the myths. I never found a student, for example, who wasn’t fascinated to learn of Phillip’s suggestion re capital punishment. Phillip was against capital punishment, which was unusual for his times. But he knew it wouldn’t be easy with an isolated convict colony at

the far end of the world. He accepted that, with some hardened felons, death might not be enough to deter them from committing murder. Phillip suggested anyone who committed murder in NSW should be landed in New Zealand to be eaten by cannibals. He felt this fate

wouldn’t be welcomed by even the most hardened of his prisoners. Phillip believed it could be a more effective deterrent than hanging, because some convicts might see murder as a quick release from their hard lives. He raised this novel idea twice in letters to the Government before he sailed. The British Government never replied. Perhaps this was an early example of Government not wanting to appear politically incorrect?

Chinese Cultural Village to be launched on World stage yong Mayor Cr Doug Eaton will lead a delegation of councillors and local business people on a nine day trip to China to focus on investment, tourism and economic opportunities for

W the Shire.

The trip has been funded independent of Council. Mayor Cr Eaton said that the major purpose of the trip was to support the Chinese Cultural Village Theme Park at Warnervale at a major event to be held at the Shanghai Yacht Club on Friday, May 31. “This event will be attended by Shanghai Government officials, the Australian Consulate, Austrade, NSW Trade and Investment and the top 200 businessmen in Shanghai, mayor Cr Eaton said. “This will launch Wyong Shire and the Cultural Village project onto the world stage and also give us a direct link with the powerful Shanghai Government. The Mayor will also sign an Investment, Trade and International Cooperation Agreement with Qingpu – a province of Shanghai – to promote tourism and investment opportunities, and also with Qinjiang, with the intent of promoting a university agreement. Meetings have been set up with Qinjiang Mayor, Zhang Guihua and Qingpu Mayor, Huiquin Zhao. “Qinjiang is a satellite city of the Wuhan megopolis, which is the

largest university city in the world with more than one million students, mayor Cr Eaton said. The Wyong Shire delegation will also visit Beijing to meet with the Chinese Entrepreneur’s Foundation which recently visited Wyong. “This will involve us attending an investment seminar in Beijing where we will have the chance to develop interest in the Council owned Iconic Development Sites, our concept for a regional airport, plans for an international university and discuss tourism initiatives, mayor Cr Eaton said. “While this trip will be at no cost to Council, the benefits to the region will be enormous in the long run. Mayor Cr Eaton said he was particularly excited about the signing of the International Cooperation Agreements with Qingpu and Qinjiang. “Qingpu is one of the districts of Shanghai, the Mayor said. “It is on the southern outskirts of Shanghai and has a population of around 700,000. “It is an area that has a lot in common with Wyong Shire in that it has a number of tourist attractions including lakes and an ancient

water town which will be an element of the Chinese Cultural Village. “Qinjiang is a resource rich city of two million people and our meetings there will provide us with the ability to establish some connections and explore the possibility of an international university eventually being located in Wyong Shire. “The agreements with Qingpu and Qinjiang will allow us to promote each other’s regions and strengthen our investment, tourism and economic outcomes, he concluded. The delegation leaves on Saturday, May 25 and includes mayor Cr Doug Eaton, Cr Greg Best, Cr Luke Nayna, Cr Adam Troy and Cr Lloyd Taylor. Also travelling will be the Shire’s Citizen of the Year Ms Marlene Pennings, and local businessmen Mr David Hannan (CEO of F Hannan Properties), Mr Eric Stammer (CEO Yeramba Estates), Mr Howard Cao (CEO Magenta Shores), Mr John Stevens (Stevens Group) and Mr Damien Wilde (CEO of the Henry Kendall Group). The club received top marks from the public across the five categories of atmosphere, service, entertainment, value for money and support for the local community. ClubsNSW CEO Mr Anthony Ball said the club that won the overall People’s Choice Award would receive a $10,000 cash prize to be split

between the club and a charity of their choice. “We were amazed at the number of votes we received this year,” he said. “In fact, a record 20,000 votes were cast across NSW from people eager to see their favourite club take out the title. “With so many votes

coming in right up until the last minute it was a tight contest to make it into the final six, so the entire team at the Shelly Beach Golf Club should be very proud of making the finals and I wish them the best of luck. “The best part of the People’s Choice competition is that it’s been designed so that

“Shelly Beach Golf Club isn’t the biggest club in the state, but they’ve obviously proved popular with members and guests who were clearly inspired to get behind the club and vote.” Shelly Beach Golf Club general manager Mr Craig Ellis said the club was thrilled to make the finals. “Whether people are

Telework Week launched on the Central Coast

C

entral Coast Telework Week was launched with the unveiling of temporary Smart Working Hubs at Wyong Race Club and Central Coast Leagues Club on Monday, May 20.

They will remain in operation until Friday, May 24 and include free Wi-Fi and a dedicated workspace for each teleworker. The Hubs can accommodate up to 15 people each day and are expected to accommodate approximately 150 workers over the course of the week. This is the first time two telework hubs have been established on the Central Coast. “These hubs will allow approximately 150 Central Coast residents to work closer to home during the teleworking event – that’s a massive number of people who won’t have to get up early to catch the train or do battle with the F3,” said

“It is vitally important for seniors to be scamsavvy as they are often the target of con artists and dishonest people masquerading as tradespeople,” Mr Roberts said. Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber said that the scams awareness seminar was an important program which educated vulnerable members of

the community. “Fair Trading’s education package for seniors equips them with the ability to recognise a scam when they see one and know how to make sure they do not fall prey to it,” Mr Webber said. Media release, 13 May 2013 Tim Potter, Office of Anthony Roberts

Sanitarium using tax breaks to its advantage

A

ustralian Sex Party president Ms Fiona Patten has singled out Berkeley Vale’s Sanitarium as an example of a company using tax breaks to its advantage, in her reply to the Budget and Opposition leader Mr Tony Abbott’s response.

Ms Patten has called on both parties to immediately take action to relieve the tax burden on families by overhauling the tax concessions provided to churches and religious organisations. She asserted that Sanitarium, which is

owned by the Seventh Day Adventists, has nearly 25% of the cereal market, valued at over $300 million, but is not subject to company tax. “The market share that they have been able to achieve is testimony to the unfair advantage they have been given over their

tax-paying competitors,” said Ms Patten. “At a time when the latest figures are showing that less than 8% of Australians are regular church-goers it would come as a shock to many Australians that churches are managing to avoid taxes by some billions

of dollars.” Ms Patten said she was committed to the abolition of tax concessions for all religions. Media release, 17 May 2013 Fiona Patten, Australian Sex Party

Local students’ work in Sculpture by the Bay exhibition

tudents from Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College – Tumbi Umbi Campus and Northlakes High School have completed works for exhibition at Gosford Regional Gallery’s 10th annual Sculpture by the Bay event on the banks of the Caroline Bay Foreshore.

S

The outdoor exhibition consists of assemblage art created by local Year 10 school students. Sculpture by the Bay is partly modelled on the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition – the international sculpture exhibition held annually at Bondi. Gosford Regional

Gallery curator Mr Tim Braham said that the theme for the exhibition was Land and Environmental Art. “This year’s theme invited students to consider and explore relationships with the natural world and landscape through their artworks,” said

Mr Braham. “Students were able to work under the guidance of their art teachers, consultant artist Col Henry and gallery staff. “Their works look fantastic and it’s great that the gallery can showcase some of our regions up and coming local artistic talent,” he concluded. Sculpture by the Bay is on exhibition at Gosford Regional Gallery until 26 May. Admission is free. Media release, 3 May 2013 Gosford Council Media

All systems go for NBN in Gosford he long commute to Sydney for many Central Coast workers could be a thing of the past, with the switch on of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Gosford on Tuesday, April 23.

T

Community leaders and local teleworkers switched on the NBN at 10am at the intersection of Dane Dr and Central Coast Highway, set against the backdrop of the heavy traffic on the busy Central Coast Highway. The switch on in the Gosford CBD and East Gosford connected over 1,000 premises, with the NBN rollout progressing across Berkeley Vale, West Gosford, Springfield and radiating out from Gosford and Berkley Vale Exchanges. Regional Development Australia chairman Mr Dave Abrahams said he saw the NBN rollout as another example of how the Central Coast could benefit from the sort of teamwork that the Central Coast Mariners were famous for. “The Central Coast is rapidly developing a teamwork ethos, the switch on of the NBN will further this momentum in businesses, educational institutions and for teleworking opportunities. “The NBN is an inspired policy and we’re pleased to acknowledge the very hard work local federal MPs have made on behalf of the

community. “I’m aware that not everyone understands the benefits that the NBN will bring to their lives and organisations. “It’s now a matter of continuing the educational process for the community about embracing the NBN and using it to benefit our fabulous Central Coast region,” said Mr Abrahams. Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill said the switch on was a “very exciting day for residents and businesses around Gosford who will now be connected to the NBN and all the opportunities that it will bring”. “The NBN will revolutionise the way that locals will use the internet. “We will be able to see our doctor from home, and our kids will be able to take a specialist class at another school. “The tyranny of distance will become a thing of the past,” Ms O’Neill said. More than 2,391 residents and business owners have received a free connection to the NBN and are now able to access super-fast internet. “Locals are spoilt for choice when they switch to the NBN. “A standard NBN connection to the home or office is free and retail services are available from around $30 a month from 40 ISPs,” said Ms O’Neill. Local businesses will also benefit by being able to reach new customers around the world, including right here in the growing

Asia-Pacific region. “This is a great opportunity for businesses to expand their operations from right here on the Central Coast into the global marketplace or for large companies to relocate into Gosford.” Ms O’Neill said. “We have 30,000 locals who commute to Sydney for work each day - that is a lot of people who would prefer to work closer to home and the NBN creates those new opportunities. “Workers will be able to tele-commute to the office a couple of days a week, so will spend less time on the

F3 or on a train and more time at home with their family. “The NBN will change the way we live, work, and access services and I’m delighted that here on the Coast we will be among the first in the country to benefit,” Ms O’Neill said. Regional Development Australia Central Coast (RDACC) CEO Mr Andrew Roach has also pledged his support the switch-on of the NBN. “The Region’s businesses and residents are set to benefit greatly from today’s switch-on of the NBN.

In proposing the Central Coast as one of the first locations for the NBN roll-out and following the successful bid for this project, RDACC established a specific broadband committee called Central Coast Broadband Infrastructure Group (CCBIG). Comprised of members from both Gosford and Wyong Councils, business leaders and representatives from educational institutions, the group works towards educating the different sectors of the community regarding developments and specific

Heritage awards W benefits of the NBN. “The CCBIG members have worked tirelessly to ensure the community has the opportunity to engage with spokespeople from NBN Co and that they are well informed of specific developments of the NBN as they arise” added Mr Roach. “The Central Coast is rapidly developing a teamwork ethos; the switch-on of the National Broadband Network will increase this momentum for businesses, educational institutions and for teleworking opportunities. “It’s now a matter of continuing the educational process for the community; we will demonstrate that by embracing the NBN not only will individuals and businesses benefit but so will our fabulous Central Coast Region,” said Mr Roach. A free NBN business forum will be held on Thursday, May 9, at the Central Coast Leagues Club from 12pm to 1pm. Court rules on short term holiday lettings

A

decision was passed in the Land and Environment Court at 5pm on Thursday, May 2, prohibiting the owner of 24 Charles Kay Dr, Terrigal, from using her house for short term letting, effective in two months’ time. The decision was made by Justice Rachael Ann Pepper following complaints made by next door neighbours John and Rosemary Dobrohotoff who told the Court the house was regularly used for bucks’ parties and the like. Gosford Council interim director of environment and planning Mr Eddie Love said Council would continue to have discussions with the Department of Planning regarding state wide issues

surrounding short term holiday letting. Mr Love said the property at 24 Charles Kay Dr was zoned 2(a) Residential and council had corresponded with owners requesting that they address neighbourhood concerns in relation to the use of this premises. “Issues surrounding short term holiday letting have been seen across the Gosford LGA,” said Mr Love. “As this case was not an isolated occurrence it was

decided by council to define and allow ‘short term holiday letting’ of dwellings for no more than four bedrooms without consent. “Letting arrangements for five and six bedroom properties would require consent and for dwellings over six bedrooms the use would not be permitted. “The above clause was incorporated into the Draft Gosford Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2009 with the view that short term holiday

letting would be addressed by the NSW Department of Planning,” said Mr Love. “The Draft LEP for Gosford is currently under review by council and the Department of Planning. “Short term holiday letting is an important economic activity in coastal cities across NSW and we will be working with the relevant bodies to find workable solutions for all involved,” said Mr Love. Greens MP and spokesperson for tourism and housing Ms Jan Barham said the decision made by the Court was a good one. “The Court’s clarification that homes in residential

zones that were intended for long-term occupancy are inappropriate for tourism purposes is an important outcome for local communities,” said Ms Barham. “In coastal areas especially, the use of homes for short-term tourism rentals has seen many potential homes lost to permanent residents, causing a shortage in housing supply. “In terms of tourism use, holiday letting has not served the community well. “Local government faces a difficult task in addressing housing availability and affordability. “This decision clarifies the

Local highlights in national budget V

inners of Gosford Council’s inaugural Gosford City Heritage Awards were announced at a special ceremony held in Council Chambers on Thursday, May 2.

The awards acknowledge the efforts of those who actively conserve heritage as well as educate and promote heritage and history within the Gosford LGA. The awards also formed part of celebrations for Australian Heritage Week and the National Trust Heritage Festival 2013. Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna said the Heritage Awards showcased the number of dedicated individuals focused on the preservation of our local history. “These awards give us a chance to publicly thank the individuals and organisations that invest their time and skills into caring for and preserving our heritage. “We were blown away by the number and quality of entries, especially as this is the Heritage Awards’ inaugural year. “Some of the award recipients have made movies, written books and even

use of approved residential dwellings for permanent residents, which should free up dwellings to ease the housing stress and ensure that tourism occurs in appropriate areas,” Ms Barham said. ital infrastructure projects and new and continuing community support programs were highlights for locals in the 2013-14 Budget, according to Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill.

The program enables people who volunteer at the school to get a credit for each hour of volunteering, and to ask for something back from other members. Ms Michelle Horner was one of the parents who responded when principal Mr Graham Holmes asked parents to give 10 hours of volunteering time per year to support the school and their children’s learning. “When my son started kindergarten I thought I would volunteer half a day a week,” said Ms Horner. “‘I help out with literacy and numeracy, I change the home readers over and glue in student

timebanking is a great way to do that,” Ms Horner concluded. “Without volunteers Wyong Public School wouldn’t be as strong, and the students would not have such a good learning experience,” said Mr Holmes. “ E v e r y o n e ’s contribution helps and every volunteer makes a difference.” Mr Holmes added that he would welcome other volunteers from the community and encouraged all the volunteers in the school to sign up for timebanking. 10,000 people celebrate Mariners’ win

T

he 125th Gosford Regional Show was held over the weekend of April 4 and 5 with organisers estimating a crowd between 10,000 and 15,000.

T

he Central Coast Mariners’ grand final win was celebrated on Friday, April 26, with a parade through the streets of Gosford. The march, which saw around 10,000 people participate, began in Mann St and ended in Kibble

Park and took around 20 minutes to complete. Gosford Business Improvement District (GBID) manager Mr Paul Brasch said it was a very positive event with a great crowd, good buzz and nice weather. “It wasn’t just Gosford,

but the whole Central Coast community who were celebrating,” said Mr Brasch. “There was a real feeling of building community pride and spirit. “Everyone was so well behaved,” said Mr Brasch. The Club’s players were

available for a signing session with fans, while a photo booth featuring the Hyundai A-League Trophy was set up for supporters to have their image snapped with the ‘toilet seat’. There was also a facepainting stall on-site, while

an inflatable pitch was present for kids to have a kick about. Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said the event provided a great opportunity for the Club’s players, coaches and official to thank the fans. “All season we have

had great support from the people of the Central Coast and many fans from outside the region too,” Arnold said.

“This important expansion of the Central Coast Men’s Shed network was fully funded by a State Government Community Building Partnership Grant of $10,975,” Mr Webber said. “This has enabled the construction of the new shed, including the laying of the concrete slab. “There is still work required to fit out

the electrical works and fixtures and I am encouraging the Alison Homestead Men’s Shed Association to apply for further funding in the next round of Community Building Partnership Grants which opens in June this year.

Native trees planted at community garden wandalan and Summerland Point Community Garden has successfully met the conditions of its Council Development Application following the plantation of 50 native trees.

Volunteers and Community Garden members working together

Four staff members from Delta Electricity, Ms Kerrie Davis, Mr Mitch Moss, Mr Greg Sellers and Mr Graham Nancarrow, volunteered to assist the Community Garden members to plant more than 50 native trees. Community Garden spokesperson Ms Barbara Roach said that she was delighted with Delta’s practical and financial support. “A key condition of the Community Garden’s DA was the planting of native trees around the external boundary,” Ms Roach said. “Most of our members are seniors, so it was really wonderful to have the Delta volunteers come in and help us with such a big job.

“The planting was a great success and we were just so pleased to have such hands-on assistance,” she added. In addition to the staff volunteers, Delta provided a $1,000 sponsorship to the Community Gardens, which enabled the purchase of the native trees, as well as a new lawn mower. Ms Davis said she was amazed by the progress the Community Garden members had made since the garden opened last October. “The members have already put in such an enormous effort and I was very happy to help them out,” she said. “It was a great day spent with really lovely,

friendly and enthusiastic people, who were so appreciative of our assistance. “After the planting, they treated us to a delicious morning tea of home-made goodies, which was terrific,” she added. Gwandalan and Summerland Point Community Garden is located at Winbin Cres, Gwandalan. The Community Garden aims to grow local produce, promote healthy eating habits and serve as a friendly meeting place for members of the local community. Local film announced as finalist he documentary titled ‘2261 – Youth in Violence’, produced by Regional Youth Support Services’ Central Coast Youth Consultants, has been announced as a finalist for this year’s Aurora Short Film Competition in the Best Community category.

T

(l to r) Documentary team members Beth Thompson, Tiffany Carter, Biana Lawther and Sarah Colville (absent - Jamie McKenzie and Haly Honeysett)

The documentary is currently being screened on the Aurora Community Channel website with winners to be announced on Sunday, June 9. “This documentary was produced locally by young people passionate about their community, it shows the plight of other young people that are doing it a bit tough,” said team leader Mr Jamie McKenzie. Filmed in Berkeley Vale, Tumbi Umbi and Killarney Vale, the film explores how violence in the areas occurs, how young people deal with it, how it makes them feel and what their perspective is on the impact that violence makes upon the

community. “We were thrilled to receive entries from a diverse range of community organisations, and were particularly impressed with the quality of the films this year,” said Aurora Community Channel CEO Ms Phyllisse Stanton. “Youth violence is such a topical issue, and this film explores it in a sensitive and thoughtful way. “We are delighted to be able to help focus community attention on this matter,” she concluded. Volunteers in the Wyong area are needed to ensure the success of the Appeal and the Salvation

Army is seeking local residents to donate some of their time to the cause. The 2013 Red Shield Appeal goal for the Central Coast is $966,500, which will support local services in the region including the newly opened Dooralong Transformation Centre, Oasis Youth Centre at Wyong, Court Chaplain at Wyong, Family Tracing Service, local emergency services and housing relief, in addition to local counselling services and the Salvo’s Care Line. Central Coast Red Shield Appeal chair Ms Louise Duff has urged people to register as a Salvos volunteer.

“Get some friends together, even just for a couple of hours on either of the doorknock weekend days and hit the streets to collect for The Salvos,” Ms Duff said. “We also encourage local businesses to form staff teams; it’s a great way to bring the team together and contribute to the local community. “If you can’t volunteer to doorknock yourself, then please, give generously to the Red Shield Appeal when collectors come knocking,” she added. oldiers Beach permanent lifeguard, Stuart Sohier, won the Australian Lifeguard of the Year award at the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association Incorporated’s 17th Annual Conference which was held at Bondi on Wednesday, May 1, and Thursday, May 2.

S

“Stuart was recognised for the quality of his patrolling at one of our most popular beaches, renowned for its heavy surf conditions,” said Wyong Council’s acting general manager Ms Maxine Kenyon. A number of races between the various lifeguards were also held at Bondi Beach in challenging surf conditions. Sohier claimed second place in the over 35 Rescue Board. Scott Higgins, who is also a lifeguard at Soldiers Beach, achieved first place in the individual Lifeguard Mission event (run, swim and board), which is considered to be the premier race by

participants. “Scott is now officially recognised as an Australian Champion after his efforts in this event,” said Ms Kenyon. “What is particularly pleasing is that Scott beat entrants from Councils with larger and better resourced lifeguard services such as Waverly and the Gold Coast,” she added. Higgins was also awarded Waterman of the Day due to his success in a number of other events. He placed second in the Open Rescue Board race, third in the Open Surf Race, and third in the Team Lifeguard Relay with Stuart Sohier and Ian Vaughan. “I would like to

congratulate all our lifeguards on their achievement at this important Conference,” Ms Kenyon said. “It is wonderful that the hard work of our lifeguards and their dedication to ensuring the safety of beach goers has been recognised in this way,” she concluded. The Conference also provided an opportunity for lifeguards to update their training and review best practices in rescue, emergency care and community education. The theme for this year’s Conference was Managing Beaches in an Age of New Technologies. Media release, 8 May 2013 Wyong Council Media

Magpies’ clubhouse destroyed by fire

Zwaanswijk retires and takes on new role with Mariners entral Coast Mariners’ defender Patrick Zwaanswijk has stated that he will retire from professional football after the club’s involvement with the current Asian Champion’s League competition ends.

The remains of the Clubhouse following the fire

he Wyong Lakes Magpies’ AFL clubhouse at Don Small Oval has been destroyed by a fire which broke out at around 1am on Friday, May 10.

The building held all of the club’s equipment and also all of its stock for the following day, on which the Club held a fundraiser to raise money for breast cancer research. “We are devastated,” said the club’s secretary Mr John Griffey. “The club had put a lot of work into the charity

day and everything we had for the weekend was in the clubhouse. “The day now carries extra significance,” he added. The day’s events commenced at 12:30pm with the main game kick off at 2pm. The day also saw club legend Bill Denniss play

his 600th game for the club. A crowd of over 200 people turned up to watch the First Division game between Wyong and Cardiff, which concluded with a one point loss to Cardiff. Media release, 10 May 2013 Garry Burkinshaw, Black Diamond AFL Website, 17 May 2013 Wyong Lakes Magpies

Zwaanswijk will remain with the Club as head of Youth and Community Football for the next three years. Under Zwaanswijk’s new portfolio, he will be the head coach for the Club’s new National Youth League team, in addition to performing duties as the Mariners’ liaison with Central Coast Football regarding the Academy pathway. Part of Zwaanswijk’s remit will also be to oversee the Club’s relations with local football clubs, and use his experience in the game to identify new players for the Club’s youth pathway. Zwaanswijk said that after nearly two decades of playing professional football in his native Netherlands, as well as in Japan and Australia, the time had come for him to hang up his boots and commence a new section of his football journey. “At a certain point there’s a transition in life,” Zwaanswijk said. “This is a great

opportunity for me, so that made it a little bit easier for me to finish my career. “For me, it’s important to give back to football and to give back to, at this particular time, the Central Coast Mariners. “It’s time to step out of the way to give Zach Anderson a good chance with Trent Sainsbury. “Anderson has shown he is a full first team player, and with me stepping out of the way it gives him the chance to get all the credit he deserves,” he added. Zwaanswijk said that he rated his 2013 Hyundai A-League Championship success alongside his back-to-back Dutch Cup crowns won with FC Utrecht in 2003 and 2004. Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold praised Zwaanswijk as one of the best foreigners to ever grace the Australian domestic scene. “When we signed Patrick he was 35 and more than a fair share

Mariners’ win puts them in the Grand Final again Tyson Scott, Central Coast Mariners

42nd minute strike by the competition’s Golden Boot winner Daniel McBreen on Sunday, April 14, at Bluetongue Stadium ensured Central Coast Mariners earned the right to fight for the Hyundai A-League Championship to be held at Allianz Stadium against Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, April 21.

The Mariners prevailed 1-0 over Ange Postecoglou’s Melbourne Victory side and, although the scoreline suggests a tight contest, in truth the Mariners largely dominated the duel. Post-match Mariners head coach Graham Arnold labelled his outfit’s structured display as “outstanding”, noting his team’s accomplishment was against a strong Victory side. “I thought overall it was a fantastic game of football,” Arnold said. “It’s nice to beat Victory when they’re at their best. “Our performance tonight was outstanding. “We left those seven players behind (from the team’s midweek AFC Champions League trip to China) with the idea of this game, and the seven of them stepped up big time and put in the performance that we were hoping for. “Tactically, the boys carried out the game plan perfectly,” said Arnold. Central Coast enjoyed the greater share of possession and weight of chances in the first 45 and, were it not

for some solid ‘keeping from Nathan Coe combined with some last ditch defending, the Mariners may well have been up by more than a solitary goal at the break. Striker Mile Sterjovski sent a left foot strike across the face of goal 14 minutes in which Coe claimed, before Bernie Ibini’s left foot effort four minutes later deflected off a Melbourne defender and into the path of the former SønderjyskE man. McBreen flashed an effort on the angle past the post on 26 minutes, while the same player thundered a fierce, goalbound shot into the head of Victory captain Adrian Leijer on the half hour. Victory failed to seriously trouble Mariners’ number one Mathew Ryan in the first half, and McBreen made the home team’s dominance pay three minutes before the interval.

After Ibini wriggled his way past a few defenders centrally, McBreen picked up a pass from the Australian youth international before thundering a powerful drive beyond Coe. After the interval, Melbourne attacker and Qantas Socceroos’ regular Archie Thompson scuffed a shot at Ryan on the hour, while substitute Mariner Mitchell Duke blasted a shot from the edge of the area just wide for his team 10 minutes later. Patrick Zwaanswijk lifted a long-range effort over the bar, while a well-positioned Central Coast Mariners defensive wall stopped any chance a late Marco Rojas free kick had to level proceedings. Unfortunately for Central Coast, midfielder Nick Montgomery received his second yellow card of the match in additional time at

the end of the 90 minutes, meaning he will miss the Club’s fourth Grand Final appearance in eight Hyundai A-League campaigns. Montgomery was understandably upset following the conclusion of the game, and while Arnold admitted the former Sheffield United man would be missed in the Grand Final, he said he had faith in the ability of the players he has to replace him in his team’s engine room. “Monty (Montgomery) is a big loss,” he said. “But (Youssouf) Hersi is suspended as well so that’s one each. “Luckily I’ve got some good players in Oli Bozanic as well as Anthony Caceres that can come in in that role.” Arnold said defeating Tony Popovic’s Western Sydney Wanderers would be a tough

task for his side, but his men would enter the contest well prepared. “Western Sydney Wanderers are going to be a huge challenge for us. “We’re going to have to be at the top of our game and no doubt Tony is taking down his notes with Ante Milicic and will look at the video of us. “We will work on what our strengths are and we’ll worry about ourselves and we’ll try and nullify Western Sydney’s strengths.” General tickets have sold out for the grand final game against Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium. Corporate hospitality was still available at the time Central Coast Grandstand went to press. Fans are being urged to leave their cars at home and travel to the match on public

ixed emotions ran through Central Coast Stadium on Tuesday, April 30, as the Central Coast Mariners progressed to the last 16 of the AFC Champions League for the first time despite a 3-0 loss to Group H winners Kashiwa Reysol.

Second half goals to Japanese international Masato Kudo as well as brilliant Brazilian’s Cleo and Leandro Domingues accounted for the Mariners, however, Graham Arnold’s team progressed to the knockout phase of the competition courtesy of Guizhou Renhe’s inability to defeat Suwon Bluewings in China. After referee Valentin Kovalenko’s full time whistle in Gosford, news trickled onto the pitch that Seo Jungwon’s Suwon had secured a 2-2 draw with Gong Lei’s Guizhou in Guiyang, meaning the Mariners’ passage to the knockout phase of the tournament had been confirmed. The Mariners fielded an almost identical line-up to their A-League Grand Final winning starting 11 for the 2013 AFC Champions League Matchday six meeting with the “Sun Kings”. Only midfielder Nick Montgomery, suspended for the A-League decider, replaced Oliver Bozanic in the Central Coast engine room. Before the game, Kashiwa

had secured first place in Group H, however, Nelsinho Baptista put forward a full strength outfit giving credit and respect to the newly crowned A-League Champions. From the outset, Central Coast piled plenty of pressure on the J-League Club. Joshua Rose fired two shots away in the opening stages, his closest thumping into the side netting. For the majority of the first half Central Coast pressed and Arnold’s team conjured their best chance in the 31st minute when Daniel McBreen made a break down the right flank. McBreen then released Bernie Ibini who used his footwork to play in Pedj Bojic. Bojic whipped in a cross to McBreen who tried to volley home but unfortunately failed to beat the Kashiwa backline. The sides hit the sheds on level terms but the A-League

Golden Boot winner McBreen was eager to start the second half with a bang. The evergreen striker was unlucky not to find the opening goal of the game in the 49th minute when he lashed a powerful drive at goal following a deflected cross. Korea Republic international Kim Changsoo was in the right place at the right time for Reysol as he blocked the ball off the line. Chances for the Mariners continued to fall as Rose made a surging run down the left and ducked inbetween the defence to fire a shot at goal in the 58th minute. Takanori Sugeno was well positioned to claim the Rockhampton-born flyer’s attempt. Despite the positive play from Central Coast, the visitors would take the lead only a minute later. Kudo ran onto a pinpoint

through in the Mariners’ area and made no mistake in sliding the ball beyond the advancing Mathew Ryan and into the back of the net. The goal served as a real momentum changer and, for much of the next 20 minutes, Kashiwa controlled the play. Kim began to advance up the pitch to collaborate with Domingues, Reysol’s key man. In the 79th minute Kashiwa doubled their advantage. After a period of confusion in the box, the ball fell nicely for striker Cleo who tapped past Ryan to make the score 2-0. The visitor’s second goal wasn’t enough to deter the home side who continued to burst forward. Rose worked incredibly hard on his wing to provide chances up front, and time and again raced back to ensure he didn’t leave a hole in defence.

However, some individual brilliance by Kashiwa’s Domingues put the game to bed in the 86th minute. From a free kick, Domingues curled a shot that just evaded the best goalkeeping efforts of Ryan. Less than two minutes after the final whistle the Mariners received confirmation from China that Guizhou had drawn with Suwon in Guiyang. With the players, coaching staff and fans shifting into celebration, it was like the team had already forgotten about their loss to Reysol as they were filled with the excitement of having achieved yet another milestone in Club history. The Mariners will face either China’s Guangzhou Evergrande or Korea Republic’s Jeonbuk Hyundai in the 2013 AFC Champions League round of 16. The first game of the home and away tie will be played at Central Coast Stadium on Wednesday, May 15. Gallant Mariners go down to Chinese champions

Mariners scrape through to next round of Champions League

by Tyson Scott, Central Coast Mariners Media Photo: Paul Barkley/LookPro

he Central Coast Mariners have given up an early lead to China’s Guangzhou Evergrande to go down 2-1 at Central Coast Stadium in the AFC Champions League Round of 16.

He said that both of the

of eyebrows were raised about him joining us,” Arnold said. “But he has proven his quality over the past three seasons, making an enormous contribution to the Mariners and the A-League. “He’s been a consistent performer for us, and his leadership qualities and ability to help other players get the best out of themselves cannot be doubted. “Alex Wilkinson, Trent Sainsbury and Zach Anderson have all improved their game by playing next to him,” he added. Central Coast Mariners chairman and group general manager Mr Peter Turnbull said that Patrick Zwaanswijk had been a source of strength for the team on and off the field since his arrival. “His leadership has been obvious since he stepped foot in Australia, and he’s especially helped the likes of Alex Wilkinson, Trent Sainsbury and Mathew Ryan to reach new levels in their professional careers. “We are now excited that Patrick can continue his leadership in a new role. “I know our youth players will be excited to have a person of Patrick’s stature to coach, mentor and advise them, as will so many of the community coaches in the region when Patrick begins to move around the association in his new role,” he concluded. opposition’s goals were from Mariners’ mistakes but that it was a huge effort by the Mariners against quality opposition. The 2013 NTD International Reviving Lost Legends

CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION

Asia-Pacific Preliminaries

MartialArts.ntdtv.com NEW YORK— What is the essence of traditional Chinese culture? Is it kung fu, dumplings, or perhaps the snugly fit mandarin gown also known as the qipao? Contrary to popular belief, those do not equate to the epitome of Chinese culture. Many people, even Chinese people, think of the 1920s qipao as the representative of traditional Chinese attire, or that martial arts is nothing more than thrilling tricks from kung fu movies. However, those elements are not the zenith of classical Chinese garment or martial arts. New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) plans to make the true essence of traditional Chinese culture more widely known through its annual series of cultural competitions, the Global Chinese Competition Series. Many essential elements of the Chinese heritage were lost during the Cultural Revolution. NTDTV is currently looking for contestants who are interested in researching, learning, and promoting authentic Chinese culture. NTDTV is a nonprofit news station founded in 2001. It directly broadcasts uncensored news via satellite into parts of mainland China and has 100 million potential viewers around the world. This year, NTDTV will be hosting its Global Han Couture Design, International Chinese Traditional Martial Arts, Chinese International Figure Painting, and Chinese International Piano Competition in hopes of sparking interest in traditional culture, particularly Chinese culture.

Aug. 3 NTU Sports Center, Taipei Registration: martialarts@ap.ntdtv.com

International Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Competition “In China, there are hundreds of major [martial arts] schools and an uncountable number of smaller ones,” said Tim Sun, the director of the competition series. Each school has its own discipline, its own art. According to Sun, Martial arts played a pivotal role in Chinese history; it would be a shame for these traditions to undergo atrophy. Historically, the martial arts have played a large part in winning Chinese wars. Yue Fei (1103–1141), one of China’s most famous military generals, practiced and created martial arts styles. Many Taoists also pursued martial arts for its spiritual significance. This year will be NTDTV’s fourth martial arts competition. Contestants are required to research a traditional martial arts school and embrace its essence in the competition performance. “This is not your typical competition,” Sun said. “In previous years, we’ve had students who entered with their teachers. The purpose of this competition isn’t to win, but to rediscover this culture and promote it.” Registration for the martial arts competition lasts from Jan. 1 to Sept. 15 for North American competitors, and Jan. 1 to July 15 for Asia-Pacific entrees. Competition Details The registration deadline is July 15, 2013, for the Asia-Pacific region. All contestants must register in advance. This year’s competition does not accept on-site registration.

New York, NY 10001, USA 4) Telephone: 1-646-736-2988. 5) Fax: 1-212-918-3479 Global Han Couture Design Competition There is currently a renaissance of traditional Chinese attire, according to Amy Lee, one of the judges of the competition. Cultural experts have found that the climax of traditional Chinese fashion design belongs to that of the Han people from the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties (A.D. 618–1644). When Lee went to fashion design school in China in the 1980s, her curriculum only touched on the Han designs briefly. Many ancient traditions have not been passed down, she said. The competition contestants are required to do research on traditional Chinese fashion, since its history is not incorporated in fashion design schools in China. “This is our fourth competition … and people are beginning to realize that the qipao does not represent Chinese dress. More and more people are learning about the Han Couture,” Lee said. Traditional Chinese culture emphasized civility, etiquette, and elegance; the ambiance of Han design is elegance. “Wearing elegant clothing helps to refine a person’s speech and conduct,” she said. “You will automatically think of how should I behave when I wear elegance.”
