RESEARCH: Hygienist Interview
Dental offices always try to cram as many operatories in as they can, which makes the rooms small and cramped. This makes it difficult to maneuver around the top of the chair when reclined. Cleaning certain teeth requires you to be positioned at the top to allow the specific angle to reach them.
Storage is a must. Prefers cabinet to countertop storage, especially after the pandemic. Most offices no longer want you to have anything on the counters for sanitation purposes. Would like to have a few upper cabinets with shelves, but mainly uses lower cabinets with many drawers due to ease of access to tools and supplies while working.
Likes having a cabinet in the wall between operatories to store shared x-ray machines. When the machine is not in use it is stored away and no longer an eyesore left out in the room.
Placing a sink at the end of the wall that houses the x-ray machine is desirable for hygienists to be able to wash their hands and not leave the sight of the patient. She was taught in school to leave the operatory as little as possible. Patients do not like when their hygienist or assistant leaves them because they don’t know when they’re coming back.
Staff bathroom placement should not be in the lounge itself but close by. Opening into a nook space or hall instead of directly into the break room allows for more privacy. The bathroom should not be placed in view of operatories.
Prefers galley-style sterilization space. This allows 5 to 6 people in the area with one side dedicated to dirty equipment and the other side for clean. Having a clearly defined space for both is huge with OSHA.
Dental Office Floorplan Design
16
After much research was conducted to find adequate information regarding layout, Henry Schein Dental was selected for their expansive knowledge in optimum operatory design as well as leading manufacturers for dental-specific equipment. Inspiration for Midtown Dental came from the abovedesigned floorplan, including its operatories, sterilization space, laboratory, ADA compliant restrooms, patient education space, and X-ray alcove.
