03 Nan Fei Hong Phase II,
China PRC
Design Concept The design concept is to create an Urban Oasis that brings a strong, contrasting environment to Xi’an, otherwise known as the Parch City. Greenery, both inside and out, colour, light shows and sculptural forms all help to present a dramatic divergence to the city’s dour, monochromatic appearance. The shopping centre, a resource for the whole development, is a mall fused with a botanical garden – a place its residents and visitors will love to visit as a respite f rom Xi’an’s harsh climate. The theme of nature def ines the architecture where the off ice towers are conceptualised as city flowers, and the podium as a city garden. This project reflects a passion of the client, NanFei-Hong, who is keen to give back to Xi’an, and add to its ongoing developmental success. 08 Morning Glory,
China PRC
Design Concept Shanghai Morning Glory is a mixed-use development located on Yinggang East Road, in the Qingpu District of Shanghai. It includes a shopping mall, sales offices, rental offices and a hotel and convention centre. The commission was to design a retail hub with multiple functions. • • • • • • • •
As an experiential civic hub, the mixed-use development integrates office space, commercial and hotel facilities within an urban location. The retail centre comprises a shopping mall and a retail street linked to the adjacent sky bridge from the subway station. The development promotes an innovative office experience. Public space is created to encourage office workers to congregate and spend quality time outdoors. High rise offices with unique views of the city front are of grade A standards – an impressive location for any corporate headquarters. 23 individual low rise sales office blocks are created to avoid fragmentation of the building blocks in the master plan. The office façade is sustainable and eco-friendly. The luxurious hotel will amaze even the most discerning business travellers and local guests.

A Sense of Arrival
Design Concept The seamless, circulatory design of the mall complex and the mixed-use tower maximizes the synergies between different but complementary uses, offerings and experiences. The transition between the indoor mall and the outdoor streetscape becomes a commercial opportunity to provide alfresco dining and external play areas – all responding to the local climate, expectations of modern Athenian families and international tourists. The application of the sweeping garden stepped terraces (located between the Tower and Mall Complex) maximizes the interaction and connectivity of the users of these buildings and nearby visitors or residents, drawing this pedestrian flow to the more intimate roof garden. By bringing the main pedestrian flow from the Pedestrian Axis through to the landscaped shopping street between the Tower and the Mall, the extended public realm encourages synergy between the different uses and creates hybrid experiences. This stepping pedestrian walkway not only offers opportunities for people to meet and connect (by chance or by design) in the indoor and outdoor spaces that define this new shopping street, it also allows daylight to penetrate deep into the building plan.

15 Shaw Tower Redevelopment,
Singapore
Design Concept Our concept explores the wrapping of spaces and layering of forms to achieve a marriage of beautiful landscape and contemporary sleek architecture within a cosmopolitan skyline. The soft and unique language of the curved tower is a subtle gesture of the site, providing relief to the Singapore skyline and its existing geometric neighbours while addressing the planning requirements. The refined curves and folds are grown from the ground floor plane where it starts to outline a series of public spaces that wrap up to the tower profile and crown. The site at ground level draws an inviting experience where large void spaces of the office lobby, drop off, outdoor offering and connections to the surrounding sites set the tone of the building ecosystem and public life. The curved folding forms start to work up the architectural building horizontally, forming a variety of curvatures, extrusions and relationships between spaces, terraces and landscapes. Through the push and pull of the distinct spaces, the building steps in and out where it addresses the site conditions and brief requirements to become a novel, high-quality development.

Our original tower design comprise of a ‘top heavy’ cantilever in order to maximise the GFA/view ratio. As the design progressed, the ‘top heavy’ cantilever designed was discarded in order to improve buildability, lowering the cost impact.

Sustainability & Public Spaces Beyond maximizing the site’s potential for its users, we aim to create opportunities for public space both on the ground and at multiple levels within the podium and tower so that the scheme has a positive impact on its neighbourhood. This is a compassionate, people-first building, exemplified by the podium park being open to public access. This green oasis improves the quality of life, one of Singapore’s core values. The sky park, a sibling to the lower podium park, reinforces the green credentials while capitalizing on the breathtaking views.

Podium & Lobby Design As a prominent corner location, the design deliberately celebrates a corner podium feature which is a glass walled element separated from the rest of the building. Above this feature are two distinct floating volumes which are clad in a glazed curtain wall to indicate the commercial and professional nature of the space whilst remaining respectful of the surrounding heritage architecture. Between these elements are external landscaped terraced areas which are accessible by the building tenants. Again, this reinforces the green credentials while making the most of the breathtaking views.
