after spending six weeks in denmark, i am certainly no copenhagen expert, but i do believe that exploring this city with my foreign eye lends a sense of wonder to this guide. here, you’ll discover shops as i discover them, get to know pockets of the city as i get to know them.

if you enjoy stumbling onto the alleys where the locals hang out, shopping at second-hand shops and meeting the artists and makers behind handmade goods...if you’re the type of person that is always on the hunt for something on the DL... this little guide is for you. it is in these peripheral areas that i found my copenhagen--hopefully with the help of this guide, even if you are only here for a few days, you will also find yours.

about the neighborhood
frederiksberg A short ten minute walk from the Central Station, Frederksberg feels less touristy than The city center and the neighborhood is full of chic little cafes, upscale shops, children’s boutiques, parks and the smallest hotel in the world. In the spring and summer months every saturday morning there is also a bustling “loppemarket’ (flea market) behind the frederiksberg town hall (frederiksberg is not technically part of copenhagen so it has it’s own local branch of government). rent a bike and ride around, get lost on the bike-only highways, picnic in one of the many, many parks, and be in-awe of a place where people can leave their sleeping babies out on the sidewalks in carriages while they grab groceries or have a coffee. ya.

Lots of ceramics, pillows and throw blankets,design magazines iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never seen, also a room of designer clothing. the space itself is gorgeous with lots of bright white and happy pops of yellow. this is a great shop to treat yourself to something super simple yet still extravagant.

this shop has a mix of new, old, and handmade goods. I’m especially fond of their glassware and they’ve got a fun selection of art and furniture, too. with a corner dedicated to babies and children, this shop has a little something for the whole family.

the most beautiful browse just to stop
While you’re on Værnedamsvej eat at the famous ‘granola’ cafe and browse any number of the other cool shops on the street. also, go around the corner and you’ll find Granola’s little sister: Hotel Central Cafe. with just one room, it’s the smallest hotel in the world. The owner used to work in props and, according to the woman who works at the cafe, has spent the last two years designing the room and making it just-so. they’ve got great coffee, too.

A gem of a studio/boutique right by the lakes, artist FraLeise sells her prints, sculptures, small dolls and pillows at reasonable prices. Why not bring home some original danish art and see where the magic happens?

This great little vintage store carries some GORGEOUS, deadstock Swedish lamps from Luxus and a lovely range of pillows made from deadstock 1950’s fabrics and some new artworks. One of the more affordable of the vintage Scandi shops I went to, this shop was a really fun little stop and just a block away from the popular street: Værnedamsvej
nørrebro nø rrebro is the most colorful, multi-ethic enclave of the city. there are three major shopping areas: 1. Blågårds Plads/ Blagards street, where you’ll find shops with handmade goods, vintage clothing, cafes and bars. 2. Ravnsborggade: where you’ll find the largest concentrated area of antique shops 3. Jægersborggade: an area that has bloomed in the last ten years into a super hip (borderline hipster) area full of quirky shops, cafe and restaurants.

H ke r a m i k b u t i k k e n Blåg år ds P l a d s 1 2 , 2200 K øb en h a v n Part studio, part shop this ceramics studio/ boutique and the one next door house some of the most beautiful new ceramics. you’ll find a mix of several ceramic artists--some of the designs are more delicate and others more avant-garde. These shops will have you buying “fragile” stickers for your suitcase.

Blågårds Plads 4 2200 København tel 35 35 90 90 placedebleu.dk pretty patchwork for a cause: Place de Bleu trains and employs immigrant women aiming to help these women and their families to achieve a better life with “dignity and joy.” Their pieces are very striking-especially the poufs and patchwork furniture. Watch their process at this quaint shop/studio in the heart of norrebro.

Sankt Hans Gades Antik was probably my favorite shop (and certainly the most affordable shop)in this small area that is pretty full of sweet little vintage and antique shops.

if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re into vintage, you will want to spend an hour or two walking around this area, especially Ravnsborggade street. The prices are not amazing, but you can find some gems. hit up this area between 2pm-5pm because the shops have weird hours and most of them seem to be open at this time. Expect to find lamps, ceramics, some vintage clothing, artwork and glassware.

<><> This street is, from what I gather, the newest ‘it’ street in Copenhagen. Apparently still owned by the Hell’s Angels, this area was kinda seedy ten years ago but is now blossoming with shops, bars and restaurants. plan to visit the Stunning cemetery Assistens Kirkegaard where you’ll find several famous graves including Hans Christen Andersen’s and then go for a stroll on this lively, cool street. If you’re peckish try Grød for an affordable and delish Danish porridge dish.

christianshavn Cross a bridge from the City Center and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find yourself in Christianshavn--a quaint area of the city that is situated along the water--and is the home to Copenhagenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous commune--Christiania. Christiania is a 40-year old commune where about 800 people reside. it surrounds a beautiful lake with handmade homes built from recycled materials. Christiania is also well-known for its cannabis trade, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s excellent vegetarian restaurant and as a home to various popular venues for art, theater and music.

While it’s almost more of a showroom or gallery space than a traditional shop, if you happen to be in town on the two days a week ‘The Apartment’ is open, it’s worth a visit. You’ll find yourself re-imaging your apartment--wishing it was a bit more like theirs. they have an eclectic mix of vintage and new furniture, rugs, wallpaper and artworks,

Three female blacksmiths opened this shop with a random mix of metal works, vintage and ethnic goods. it’s smack in the middle of copenhagen’s commune: Christiania.

vesterbro locals will tell you that vesterbro used to be a ‘rough’ neighborhood-now it’s kind of hipster with a family twist (the so-called ‘meat-packing’ district is also here...Apparently it’s the place to be at night time--but alas, it’s been a minute since i’ve partied. in vesterbro you’ll find cafe’s, clothing and record shops a few hidden art galleries and some really good restaurants. try bio mio. it’s bomb.

if you are in CPH for just a couple of days and limited in the shops you have time for outside of the city center, Designer Zoo is probably a good choice as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest of the small shops featured here and they carry many of the designers that are featured here, too. Ceramics, glassware, jewelry and furniture, this Designer Zoo has a gallery or museum shop feel.

A couple of blocks up the street youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find Frederksberg park and zoo. head up for a stroll in this huge central-park like area of the city.
historic center (downtown)
Downtown needs little introduction-it’s the heart of the city. With shopping streets large and small, the city center is likely where you’ll be spending the bulk of your time. From the Design Museum Danmark to the Statens museum for kunst, the Little Mermaid and everything in between--there is no shortage of stuff to do and see. Stroget is the main shopping drag where you’ll find the H&Ms and the Lego Stores...nearby, you’ll also find must-see shops: Illums, Hay, Stilleben, and Klassik. Look them up, check ‘em out--they’re totally worth a visit--but if you’re looking for the more DL places to shop (and browse) downtown, go find the ones i talk about in this section.

this vintage furniture/design shop and a quaint cozy (kind of hidden) cafe was certainly one of my favorite shops AND cafes in Copenhagen. A mix of industrialstyle, mid-century and really good wine, this place is a must.
