2015 Lookbook Justina Hnatowicz

Introduction  Â

Â

Hello! My name is Justina Hnatowicz. I am 18 years old and have been interested in art for as long as I can remember. After wandering with no direction and dabbling in many genres, in 2015, I finally found my home; inkwork. Once discovering this almost magical passion, I averted myself from creating anything but.

All the illustrations in this book were crafted by hand using only a pencil and 0.05 Micron and Prismacolor Pens. The large Mandalas were constructed with a compass very sparingly. My primary inspiration comes from nature. I see the brilliance in everything; flowers, fire, animals, space, water, air, the moon, all of which is reflected in my work. Not only do I focus on natural entities, but I am also inspired by the ecosystems created by humans, taking inspiration from modern architectural structures and geometry. It is this union of nature and geometry, imperfection and perfection, that stands at the core of my art. I hope that I can inspire you!

On Valentine’s Day 2015, I went out with my family for a special dinner. Who would have thought that in that very moment, I got the idea for this piece? Right there at the dinner table, right inside my lucky sketchbook I had conveniently brought with me, I began the most daunting, elaborate piece of my career as an artist. A few months later, I finally finished, and I have never experienced anything so rewarding. I rarely exhibit pride, but this owl illustration is the pinnacle of my artistic growth and I am beyond happy with the results of all my hard work. Drawn with only a pencil and a few Micron 0.05 Ink Pens. Original Size: 9 ½” x 6”

Mandalas

On My

I can remember the day clearly. It was exactly one week before the start of my senior year in high school. I have heard of mandalas before, but I never attempted to create my own, the primary reason being that I simply did not know how they were made. That morning, I grabbed a piece of computer paper from my printer and began drawing. To the right are my very first attempts at what would soon grow into the single most delightful style of art for me.

After that successful first experiment, I wanted to see if I was capable of anything more. My first large scale mandala is also pictured on the next page, and it was constructed entirely without any ruler, or compass, or logistical approach of any sort. Similar to my owl, it was also drawn inside a restaurant, amusingly. But eventually, my style would evolve to what it is today. Through experience, I have developed my own method of constructing mandalas; a method I haven’t seen any other artist use that I’m aware of, and my technique will only keep improving from here.
