Developing Global Leaders in The World Food Prize Global Youth Institute

C

reated by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug and Iowa businessman and philanthropist John Ruan, the World Food Prize Foundation’s Global Youth Institute annually hosts more than 100 exceptional high-school students from across the United States and abroad. Student delegates and their teacher mentors travel to Des Moines, Iowa, each October to attend this exciting three-day event at which they interact with Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates and discuss pressing food-security issues with international experts.

Interact with International Experts Students present papers they have researched and written on a critical aspect of food security, and discuss their findings with global leaders in science, industry, and policy, as well as their peers, in roundtable discussions and a panel debriefing.

Connect with Student Leaders from Around the World Delegates have a unique opportunity to connect with other student leaders from across the United States and various foreign countries to discuss global challenges, identify solutions to these problems, and build lasting friendships.

n the Fight Against Hunger Tour Innovative Research and Industrial Facilities Students participate in tours of leading industrial, governmental, and research facilities addressing issues of food and water security, nutrition, global agriculture, and health. In recent years students have visited Blank Children’s Hospital, Des Moines University’s Global Health Program, the Des Moines Water Works facility, Lincolnway Energy ethanol plant, Monsanto, Pioneer Hi-Bred, and Syngenta.

Attend a Premier International Conference and Award Ceremony Students and their teacher mentors attend the World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue, an international conference that brings together over 600 experts and policy leaders from more than 60 countries to address cuttingedge challenges in food security and international development. Students and their teacher mentors also participate in the World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony in the historic Iowa State Capitol, as the “Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture” is awarded to individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world.

Borlaug-Ruan International Internship Travel Abroad and Start Making a Difference

B

y participating in the Global Youth Institute held in Iowa, students are eligible to apply for a Borlaug-Ruan International Internship, an all-expenses-paid, eight-week, hands-on experience, working with worldrenowned scientists and policymakers at leading research centers and institutions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Since 1998, over 120 Borlaug-Ruan Interns have traveled to Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad, and Turkey to get a firsthand view of serious food-security and nutritional problems in poverty-stricken areas and to take part in ground-breaking research.
