I believe architecture is a methodology to show both tangible and intangible beauty. Great architecture is part of a city’s soul. An architect is thus someone who understand the city, its culture, and brings art to life that will be identified with it. Becoming an architect is the dream I chase.

We Work-Co Live Housing Fall 2016 The project trys to house both living and working programs in downtown Syracuse. Every housing unit has TWO DOORS: one provides access to lower living level and another open to upper working level. In plan, the organizing structure is inspired by the Burolandshaft Office Landscape. In section, every household sits like small pavilion which has direct access to 2 levels. The project is a layered cake of private living community and public wework program. On living level housing units are mixed and grouped with equal access to amenities and storage shelf for shared belongings. On working level public wework space are floating between tenants’ personal workspaces.

in between Library Spring 2016 Reading New York city as field of object, different object nature, materiality, sizing influence the visible and invisible boundaries around them. Programs can be categorized according to their openness or popularity, a building can be rethink as a miniature of urban conditions. Big, hard edged mass for private office and auditorium. Small “attractor objects create gradient boundary around them. Even smaller: Non-structural columns used as space defining tool Pattern as guidance.

infopolis Urban Structure Fall 2017 Team work with Ran He & Nuofan Xu

A vertical urbanism influenced by twisted political narrative.

Prologue Infopolis is more than a dystopia. It is a bleak prospect on society, a cynical dream of our modern urban ambitions, and a twisted political narrative exerted on top of an existing chaotic normality. Beneath the surface of the absurdity and conflict, Infopolis represents a conglomeration of political and social injustices- poised to assault under the innocent guise of urban reconstruction. Extreme government censorship gives way for corporations to take advantage of lower-income residents; who are being socially and physically segregated from their wealthier counterpart. Society, instead of crumbling apart, is held together by a myriad of urban infrastructures designed uniquely for Infopolis – gigantic signal jamming towers broadcasting high frequency radio waves block all transmission of information within their radius, security checkpoints filters out the undesirables from the city population, and colossal vertical transportation stations carrying city residents to another street level. The creation of Infopolis, as fictional as the city may be, is based on real-world social misfunctions around us. In Beijing, new directives on media self-censorship are being distributed every day. Each day words are being replaced and re-interpreted to justify the government’s agenda. Citywide cleanup operations deface the storefronts and claims themselves to be purifiers of the city. At Times Square, the cityscape is defined by the commercial value provided through the visual interface on buildings. Architecture, in a way of speaking, becomes a superficial agent of advertisement. In Hong Kong, city with one of the highest land prices, vertical development becomes an urban trend. Massive residential towers house thousands of identical spaces that families reside in. Sunlight and air became a rare commodity for those live near the ground level. These urban issues, however, are not isolated or unique for each city. Infopolis thus became a reasonable and rational extrapolation of a foreseeable urban phenomenon. To say this, we must first acknowledge that our goal in creating the city is not to “solve” the now much more complicated urban fabric. Instead we become speculators of the lifestyle presented by a new and more challenging environment. Simply put, Infopolis is more of an urban ambition than it is a problem-solving case study. With hardships comes struggle; citizens resort to various means of comfort. Some are merely silent observers; some are standing up to resist and change. Others adapt to the current status quo and become a fine piece of clockwork in the giant bureaucratic machine. In ACT II we start to focus on crucial areas that defines the city, from the most iconic radio-silence zone to a drivethrough restaurant buried deep inside the vertical station. Each scene starts from an abstract concept, and they evolve as the city develops. Futuristic gadgets shape and define the very space we live in; and revolutionize our way of life. Yet the city radiates tension, as it was built on the very idea of economic efficiency, discrimination and social inequality, all of which, at human scale, become deafening screams for freedom and justice.

Real world Issues A conversion about urban Censorhship This year around June in Beijing, a campaign to bring buildings in the city up to code was launched citywide. The primary concern of the city was shop owners randomly building their walls and windows that were not code compliant. Although the intention was beyond reproach for safety reasons, the execution was carried out brutally with most of the storefront of shops and bars destroyed; and what was left of the building was filled with a lifeless impenetrable brick wall. This issue brings out the long controversial topic about censorship. Increasingly, buildings in China have to abide not only safety codes but also comply with the government’s ruling aesthetic valuesmainstream and harmonic. Beijing only reflect a small portion of government censo ship because most of the censor is done before the conception of the building.

A struggle Between Classes One major inspiration to the creation of Infopolis is the historic Kowloon Walled City. An extremely densely populated settlement in Hong Kong. Buildings are highly vertically expressed while residents occupy very little space within each apartment. We take great interest in not only the social inequality among the city, but more importantly the urban issues that arrive within this set of spacial boundaries. As Hong Kong continues to grow as a city with one of the most expensive land prices, new colossal residential towers are continually being constructed with little concern for the living condition inside. More and more buildings become dilapidated and unhygienic slums. And the situation is still worsening.

An endless sea of junky information Times Square is a major commercial intersection. The commercials and billboards date back to 1940s. Architecture around times square become incredibly functionalistic- that is to provide commercial coverage and, in turn, economic gain. Buildings become nothing more than canvases for corporations to reap profits yet pedestrians all seem to enjoy the over-influx of information and commercialism. We take Times Square as a sample for our commercial spaces to experiment on media-defined facades and architecture. From there, the unavoidable conflicts between an almost chaotic space of advertisements and the dead silent world of government information are slowing going to unfold‌

City Plan The Master plan is a collage of different urban textures worldwide. It is arranged in a reasonable way so that the island proves that this urban phenomenon can actually happen in anywhere around the world. The vertical city is a phoenomenon that violently built upon the existing under the political and commercial forces.

The second layer of the city is determined by the location of the vertical transportation stations. The vertical stations bring up the construction of inter-station routes. After that, the second layer of the city was developped simultaneously based on the location of the stations. The jamming tower are thus placed to fight against the commercial power.

Station Vertical Massive Transportation Stations (VMTS) are the backbone of the city infrastructure. A multitude of skyscraping vertical columns support the dozens of new street levels above ground (high-lines), but they also provide convenient and direct access up and down the city. Within them are both pedestrian and vehicular access, which are strictly monitored and restricted to citizens with the corresponding access level.

Jamming Tower Jamming towers are devices deployed by the central city government as a mean to control and censor media. Within its signal radius, all information is blocked. We are particularly interest in it urban and architectural significance. As residents take on different attitude towards space that is void of media and information. The city skyline reflects the irreversible effect these towers cast on a dystopian urban configuration.

Stations are exclusive transportation interchanges between the upper and lower levels in Infopolis. These provide passage to both vehicles and pedestrians with the right clearance level. Security checkpoints are set up to regulate these vertical movements.

There is no specific boundary between “Upper” and “Lower” districts. The city is a multi-layered conglomerate separated by wealth, dominated by big companies and finally taken advantage of by the government. Rather, upper and lower became synonyms for order and chaos. One could live on the top deck in the Peddlers’ District and still be called a “lower-scum”; while those on Palace Ave, though the geological lowest point in the city, are the ones who control Infopolis.

Commercial signs are a common sight of the Lower District, given “Uppers” can directly see them while walking on the sidewalks. Since advertisements are highly censored/taxed in Upper, most commercials appear down here.

Upper District houses roughly 1/5 of the entire population of Infopolis; and they consist the top 20% of the economic pyramid. Housing is based on merit and in Infopolis, that means taxes and donations.

New editors become agents that destroy information instead of creating new information.

Vertical stations run through the city and makes up the largest transportation system. Radiating from them are highlines that run across different st. levels.

Atop the city are “meditation spaces that are void of any information. The government impleted the zone for censorships but the city turned it into a unique space.

The lower city is in a dilapidated state- lack of government control. Selfconstructed stuctures run uncontrolled and residents live in a minimal living environment.

Lower district architecture is granted with a high level of freedom: self-built structures, drive-through restaurants that is built inside a vertical station...

Security checkpoints are placed through the entire city- for security reasons. They safeguard the benefits of the upper class.

Play Structure Analysis Scene F: Meditation Temple

Meditation temples are spaces created on the verge of the radio-broadcasting jamming signal. These are the unique creations of Infopolis. Instead of avoiding the jamming signal, these building embrace them as the ultimate space for spiritial clarity. They would oftentimes be attached to an existing structure such as residential tower as a gateway of cleansing. When the government abolished all religions and “gods in 2035, these buildings were not demolished- instead they were converted to represent new social ideals.

Play Structure Analysis Scene G: Sandwich House For those who are rich enough, this is one of the best living apartment in this city with limited space. Aboundant sunlight and vertical garden at ground floor makes this place one of the most expensive apartemnts in this city.

For those who tries to smuggle to upper district, the thickness of structure in sandwich house is their temporal living space. They have to wait for government to confirm their death and claim a new identiy in the upper area.

Play Structure Analysis Scene P: Meditation Temple

New editors’ office become industrial-like spaces that dedicate the editors to a new function- censoring and destroying all offensive material. The state-controlled facility now effectively and efficiently collect, inspect, and destroy books and publications all within one building. Each day trucks of books are transported in and incinerated. To many of the editors, their jobs have become an ironic occupation- instead of creating new information, they erase existing knowledge into oblivion. One of the main protagonists, Pip Lao, is one among these new disenfranchised occupation.

Play Structure Analysis Scene C: Vertical Garden

Vertical garden are a new urban mutation of the wide-spread phenomenon of “green architecture in the 20s. Due to the tall elevation, vegetation requires a huge amount of energy and water to survive. Therefore these parks only occur in luxury condominiums for the upper part of the body. Nevertheless, these parks created a new type of public space. The upper citizens also use these spaces to speculate on the interesting lifes of lower citizens.

Play Structure Analysis Typical Upper Apartment

In the upper part of the city, new apartment buildings are constantly erected on top of the existing structures. Driven by commercial needs these are only afforded by the wealthy part of the population. Ranging from normal residential apartment towerers to highly luxurious condominiums, the upper was the city normality several decades ago. People enjoy normal living conditions, sunlight, air and public amenities. Their privacy is protected by dozens of security checkpoints that only allow residents with the proper ID to pass through, thus excluding all lower residents from the streets or parks. Although most of these spaces are affected by the jamming signals, more and more developers have chosen to avoid the jamming zone to create even more spaces for the rich.

Play Structure Analysis Typical Lower Appartment

The unique structure of the city causes the financially depraved residents to live in a high density and chaotic neighborhood called the lowers. Here residents often adapt and create temporary structures to accomodate for their needs. Shared spaces are very restricted and little to none public space is present in these parts of the city. Self-built structures subdiving already tiny rooms are constructed to accomodate even more financially challenged people in the lower apartments. Spacially the rooms have a smaller ceiling height; light and air are almost non-existent especially closer to the ground. Many commute to the Upper to make a living through the vertical towers. Some of these commuters would illegally “immigrate to the Upper District.

Play Structure Analysis Scene: E Restaurant

Inspired by the typical restaurant style in country side of America, R’s restaurant provide a similar experience based on vertical transportaion methoud which prevails in this city. The restaurant is one of the ad-hoc spaces cleverly thought of by an upper businessman- Seb. This almost resembles to a drive-through structure in the early 20s. Residents pass through the cashier in the vertical transportation trains and take their food from the serving station further up.

This scene is a re-imagination of traditional utilitarian spaces against the verticality of the city. This unique structure is only a corner of the mutations this city has to offer.

Play Structure Analysis Scene L : Library

The forbidden book library is probably one of the most illegal place in the city. Locating in the middle part of the city, the library camflouges as a restaurant. Only those who knows the true identity of this place can get access to those forbidden books in this information-limited city.

Forbidden books

All the forbidden books are stored in gap between the false ceiling and the concrete slab. People have to be very careful when they get access to it. Reading is only allowed in the second floor. Because of the actual program of this place, it has been destroied countless times in different locations in the city. However, someone could always find a way to reopen in another place. No one knows who’s behind this mysterious place.

Play Structure Analysis Scene A: Lower Commercial

The lower commercial zone was once the old commercial street in the old city. Now it has transformed to one of the few public spaces for the lower residents to congregate. Peddlers, drug dealers and prostitutes infest the market at night - and the bottom of Infopolis is always at night. Artificial lighting illuminates the streets 24/7. The government exert and has not attempted to any power- simply because it takes too much maintanence and manpower. Yet this urban phenomenon is not exlusive. In our cities we often forget about the security sunlight and artificial lights provide. The dystopian environment in Infopolis is a fitting extrapolation of how verticality in cities would affect the ground level. And it is a prediction of urban problems our major cities would soon face.
