YOUNG PINES
ABBEY MEAKER
YOUNG PINES Young Pines is in response to Japanese Shunga engravings, the most famous being the woman who is sexually devoured by the father and son octopuses, created by Katsushika Hokusai. I am interested in the history of sexual depictions in Japanese culture, how it is often violent, sometimes satirical, and involving animals. These visual studies aim to address my curiosities as well as to begin a comparison of sexuality in Japanese culture to that of the stringent representations of sexual expression in American culture.
