Whittier Greenleaf School Oakland, California

A full service community resource

Client: Oakland Unified School District Est. Completion: Fall 2017

Residents in this impoverished Oakland community face an uphill battle to keep their children in school. The Whittier Greenleaf expansion and modernization employs a holistic, community-building approach to education, providing integrated services for parents and students alike. It is a model for the district-wide goal of the “full-service community school where the campus becomes an open and encouraging resource for the community. The school offers services far beyond typical classroom learning to strengthen families and the community. Adding four new buildings to a dense, urban site and modernizing the main 1920’s classroom building, this project completely reorganizes the campus and provides modern, energy-efficient and accessible learning environments for the students. A new 2-story classroom wing gives the campus a entrance and allows the central administration space to move to ground level adjacent to the double height lobby atrium. A library with personal, small group and classroom study spaces sits

above the administration area, where an open bridge allows a public connection while preserving secure access. A family resource center is adjacent to the main office, and serves as space for parents and groups to hold classes, do laundry, meet teachers and many other activities. The vacated cafeteria in the basement of the existing building is renovated into a suite of offices and small classrooms surrounding a flexible group learning space for the variety of special counseling, tutoring and social work needs in the school. A secondary heart to the community outreach program, the counseling suite is a space for students and parents to work through issues separately from the official administration.

Multipurpose Building

The large communal space is central to many aspects of the school’s function, from daily lunch and physical education to annual performances or academic events. Whittier’s small site amplifies the program requirements placed upon the single large space on the campus, accomodating varied, and sometimes simultaneous activities, while allowing as open access as possible to the rest of the site. The multipurpose building is conceived as one large space encompassing several small rooms with flexible dividers. The central multipurpose room shares connections to the elevated stage and music classroom to one side, and is open through overhead doors to the circulation space to another side. In a larger event, the building can be used in a fully open configuration, allowing for circulation through and about all rooms as type of convention hall. During a typical school day, the spaces can be divided allowing students to eat lunch in the main room, while the music room and stage are utilized for indoor play space. The resulting space is a fluid and changing configuration, open to students and the community in a variety of ways, while maintaining the required security and access control.

Park Avenue and Laurel Grove Apartments San Jose, CA

Two affordable developments sharing community

Client: Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara Est. Completion: 2017

The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara saw opportunity in the recent economic decline and began purchasing properties throughout San Jose for the future development of affordable communities. This particular site sits on the outer edge of downtown San Jose, and affords access to a variety of mass-transit options, a rarity in the car-centric culture of Silicon Valley. The large site is split into two properities with separate developments, one with housing for families, the other for senior citizens. In order to create the most socially constructive housing possible, both developments are inclusive of services for the residents (social workers, professional assistance, etc) that extend the mission of social housing beyond merely providing shelter. The two buildings share a central community building and courtyard, offering spaces for events and neighborly gatherings, while each possesses their own unique massing, street front character and unit types to fit their program and localized context.

Architectural Fictions of the Dispersed City Master’s Thesis

De-objectifying the American Suburb

Thesis, Spring 2012 San Jose, CA

Set in the culture of the economic meltdown and subsequent housing crisis, this project explores methods of discomforting and re-spatializing the suburban setting of San Jose, CA. Through the building of a series of architectural analogs that focused on the dissolution of the object within the field, the project sought ways to create an interactive and empowering urbanism within the linear, dispersed city. The sprawling mazes of houses, streets, feeders and highways offers a comforting sense of security, but casts a dark gloom of isolation and disconnection. This project seeks to override that disconnection by breaking up the disorienting pattern of maze-like streets and objective primacy of the single family home by proposing redevelopment methods that allow for new pedestrian pathways to local transit hubs, rezoning to allow for small businesses within the cul-de-sacs, and public park spaces with orientation towers built into the unused spaces of back and side yards. Struggling home owners can refinance their homes to affordable levels by selling portions of their land to a public entity that overseas the creation of the new park-ways.

Student

Rhode Island School of Design Critic: Almin Prsic

57

As an exploration of the architectural process, this project finds a space between an analytical planning exercise and that of an art practice, producing a series of objects that move from purely sculptural toward the architecturally representative model. It looks for ways to find ideas through the intuition of making and experimenting, then presents the process as the finished product, with each experiment carrying the equal weight of a final solution. It states that architecture is not just in the final building, but in the collection of artifacts throughout the design process.

Wells-Lamson Art Hike Advanced Studio Project

A campus for artists cut into an abandoned quarry

Breaking Ground Advanced Studio, Fall 2011 Barre, VT

Answering a competition brief for an artist-in-residency program to be established at the site of an abandoned quarry in Barre, VT, this project cuts a hiking path into the hills around the site and positions four studio-residences along the hike. The act of travelling through the site builds a connection to the environment and immerses visitors and artists into the rich experience of place in the Vermont mountains, while forming a relationship with the massive void of the quarry pit. A wooded walkway perched along a hillside cuts into the landscape, exposing the hillside granite as retaining wall, and expands in width to accomodate the studio buildings. The artists’ studio reside within the path, merging the visitors’ experience of the natural landscape along the hike with that of the studio visit. At the studio, the path splits levels to allow hikers to ascend into the studio space, or bypass downward and around.

Student

Rhode Island School of Design Critic: Silvia Acosta

69

Sense of place builds through the long, slow walk in the woods, giving hints of the site’s geology by occupying the excavated granite’s space, and immersion in the local environment, offering heavilly secluded areas of wildnerness and overlooking vistas of the whole area. Also, a sense of place is understood historically and culturally as the path visits relics of the non-operational quarry and the abandoned railway that traverses the site. Ultimately the artist and visitors come to understand the creative process within the context of natural and geographic timelines.

Magazine Beach Chicken Coup and Garden Advanced Studio Project

An ephemeral connection to a history of agriculture

The Ephemeral and the Everlasting, Spring 2011 Boston, MA

A moving chicken coop worms along the banks over the course of a growing season. The fencing and building expand to open views during the day and contract to protect the inabitants at night. The slow movement down the Charles leaves a fertilized garden in its wake, planted with seasonal-appropriate vegetables and plantings, recording the passage of the year and creating a garden path for visitors to the river. The project recalls the Charles earlier times as support for agriculture and then as a home for a large number of slaughter houses.

Wave Ceiling Installation A canopy of interfering wave patterns This installation in RISD’s Bayard Ewing Building’s gallery was conceived from interfering wave patterns. Mulitple wave functions were written and analyzed using Microsoft Excel, which were then imported to Rhino to create a 3D surface. The invented surface was placed within the gallery to divide the space into into a circulation zone and a discussion zone. The surface was then cut according to local constraints, such as sprinkler pipes or ceiling conditions. The resulting form was built from laser cut OSB ribs and coated with fiberglass on a portion of the surface.
