ECONOMIC ASSISTANCE CENTER SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
FINALIST IN KROB AIA DELINEATION COMPETITION 2012
The scheme of the Economic Assistance Center consists of a functional core, housing all non-service related programmatic elements of the building, adjacent to a service column, wrapped by a stairway that engulfs the entirety of the building. The primary structure, a defining aesthetic of the building, is composed of a diagrid skeleton that acts to temper seismic disturbances, while also allowing daylight to penetrate important workplaces and classrooms. The diagrid also serves to support a cantilevered staircase on the exterior of the building. Perforated screens are bound to this staircase on the southwest and southeast sides of the building to mitigate the intense solar gains of the Californian sunlight. This building provides a wonderful environment for fiscally unstable individuals to gain financial bearing while also providing social services to the surrounding community.

KANSAS CITY BREWERY
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI
9
Located at the corner of 14th and Baltimore in Kansas City, Missouri is the Kansas City Brewery. This location is significant because it is at a central point between Old Downtown and the newer Power and Light development. Due to these surrounding attractions, it is a heavily trafficked area. To take advantage of this aspect, entries were provided for passerbyes on both the north and south ends of the site. The simplistic program of a brew house, hospitality area, and service spaces were arranged to address all sides of the site. The brewhouse on the western side advertises its contents of the brew-making process to the north and to the west. A volume, running north to south on the east end of the site houses the hospitality area and the spaces that service it. The separation of the brewhouse and hospitality area is intended to reduce the repugnant noises of the brew-making process while one is situated in the hospitality area. The interstitial space between the two elongated volumes is dedicated to two beer gardens, doubling as entry processions to the brewery. Each beer garden is able to be used or rented independently, allowing for multiple parties to operate at the same time. The incorporation of beer gardens intends to mimic the popularity of these outdoor spaces that originated in Germany, ultimately becoming a place of significant social interaction.

PROPORTIONING
The design of the low-threshold center uses modern materials to draw the attention of the community and prompt non-residents to come and discover its trendy amenities. It is a building for the community, but focuses its efforts toward the recuperation of individuals with varying social and financial dilemmas. Those that are unfortunate enough to fall on hard times should be given opportunities to get back on their feet in a private manner. To achieve this, the building is divided into four functionally bound volumes. Each volume is wrapped in translucent channel glass to allow diffused daylight into the building, while also providing a sense of anonymity to its patrons. The program of the building consists of a reception center, low-threshold center, sporting facility, charity shop, and housing. This array of functions is arranged with the most public spaces directly accessible from the street while the more private spaces of the building are elevated above ground level. This placement is intended to encourage people in the community to use the common spaces of the building, allowing residents to be linked socially to the surrounding populace.

FLINT HILLS WINERY
MANHATTAN, KANSAS
21
Nestled in the rolling hills of rural Manhattan, Kansas is the Flint Winery. The winery is allotted a great deal of land to grow and harvest grapes in order to produce and later show off the best wine in the Midwest. This design combines both production and presentation into a live show of the winemaking process. Visitors are perched above the process as grapes are pressed, fermented, and filtered. They may pass linearly above and see the active parts of the process or walk onto the mezzanine to view the aging barrels while imbibing at the bar. If one wishes to take in the picturesque landscape, they need only to look west from anywhere in the facility or walk out onto the balcony, which is meant to maximize the beauty of the setting. This scheme allows the visitor to safely examine all parts of the winemaking process, while also capitalizing on the beautiful surrounding landscape.

DESIGN+BUILD
CAMP DAISY HINDMAN DOVER, KANSAS
27
The Camp Daisy Hindman Design+Build project is for the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas. Its design commenced during the 2011-2012 school year, but fell short of completion with only the two sheds being built, devoid of contents. In 2013, our studio picked up where the previous studio left off and were assigned the task of completing the project. The initial request of the clients was to create an economically designed shower and restroom facility, fit for girls between the ages of 5 and 18. The program stipulated six showers, changing areas, 50 cubbies, three toilet stalls, three hand washings stations, one male full bath. It also included a solution for spalling on a concrete retaining wall and provision of safety railings for the shed. Note: Some designing was done as a group.
In order to create a space that relates to young girls, we searched for methods that would liven up an otherwise morose shower facility. Our proposition seeks to starkly contrast the black of the shed by creating a white mass, adorned with colorful interiors and playful uses of light and graphics. An array of colors are displayed to reflect the diversity and excitement the young girls possess.

PARAMETRIC MODELING This is a group project completed by my third year studio. I had a large role in both the design and the construction of the model. We used Grasshopper, a parametric modeling plug-in for Rhino, to generate the form and laser file for each shape. The form is an exponential sinusoidal function graphed in three dimensions, which is meant to represent an object dropping onto a liquid surface. From this exercise I learned the applicability of parametric modeling and had the experience of working with others under strict time constraints.
