Understanding

The beginning‌ Coit Tower/Filbert Gardens The assignment was to make an abstract 3D representational model of our specific location. I was focusing on the reflection and the calm and smooth feeling that I have felt when I last visited Filbert Gardens. I redesigned the trees focusing on the curvilinear shapes and the free formation. However, it was still literal and lacked the abstraction.

What does it need 



The first iteration needed more proportions. The trees were all primarily the same and it lacked the positive and negative space. We had to think as a landscape architect and find out what the message the architect was trying to convey in terms of geometry, above & below, scale, area vs. domain, and edge conditions.

Comparison Iteration 1

Iteration 2

Differences 

I was trying to use the space that was within the space by using mirrors within a box to define the above & below and from the left & right views.



The iteration was again very literal and very reflective. I needed to step away from using sheet metal and convey the same message by using different material.

And the evolution begins

Above & Below I stepped away from using sheet metal and started to explore the pathways and the spaces from above & below.

Exploring the pathways 

The trees from the previous two models were too literal and wasn’t abstracted enough, so I decided to start exploring the pathways. What I explored from the elevated pathways was that the various spaces that are made once you start rotating and elevating it. Though it was a huge jump from the previous models, it now had another problem which was symmetry.

Iteration 3

Iteration 4

Natural 

I decided to pick the best features from the previous models and start expanding on them. I went away from symmetry and started to make my pathway more distinct. What was very weak in my model was that the materials were from it’s natural state, the toothpicks were still toothpicks.

Connections We then started to focus more in the architectural form and the connections from P1 to P2.

And the pathway gets longer Iteration 5

Iteration 6

The views The pathways started to diverse in directions and became architecturally more stable. The views reflected on the first few adjectives and it defined the various walls and ceilings that are within.

Places Though this iteration had many distinct pathways and was architecturally stable, it lacked distinct places and a beginning & an end.

It get’s bigger! From this

To this (Iteration #7)

What’s missing? I still lacked defined places, but I made the entrance more enticing by adding a fan like wall structure.

The final piece I added a distinct place and entrance to make the structure more readable and flipped the fan wall like structure to make it bond with the pathway as it felt like it stood out from the rest.

From the beginning to the end
