Vellum Furniture Competition Location:

San Luis Obispo, CA

Program:

Furniture Piece

Description:

The concept for the piece was to create an indeterminate form that would invite play and social interaction from the users in order to activate and use the piece. Users must explore and move the dynamic chair in order to find a fitting configuration, and in doing so take authorship over their decisions and ultimate outcomes, strengthening engagement with the piece. Articulated panels fold and collapse into a multiplicity of designed sitting configuration outcomes, some of which require collaboration in order to explore the full spectrum of sitting opportunities. Spring systems assist with movement and the changeability of configurations. It is a dynamic and movable piece that could be deployed in public settings to catalyze random social interaction between chance users and spectators.

Urban Social Potentials

Location:

Garden Grove, CA

Program:

Urban Proposal

Description:

A critical response to the erosion of public space in contemporary cities. Discrete zoning, spatial commoditization and the devaluing of the social function of the inbetween urban milieu have created cities that lack the spontaneity and social cohesion that was so critical in historical cities. The in-between can again become meaningful and serve to allow for latent urban potentials to become manifest in the city. An investigation into contemporary urban fabrics and a proposal for a new formal arrangement to allow for a renewed urban vitality in postsuburban Garden Grove, CA (part of the larger Los Angeles metro region) as a paradigm to be utilized throughout the region at various underutilized sites as new centers of density, urban vitality and social intensity.
