Hello there, adventurers, glorious creatures, dreamers of dreams! We’re delighted to be welcoming you to the eighth (how the heck did that happen?) Just So Festival. Step away from your real lives into our bonkers wonderland, where curious performers and visual spectacles await you at every turn. We couldn’t be more excited about this year’s programme, and as I write this we’re just dreaming of you all arriving and bringing it all to life. From jelly fights to real life arcade games, wedding celebrations to intimate gigs, the stage is set! As ever, we know that however marvellous the programme is, it is your enthusiasm, playfulness and joie de vivre that turns Just So into the technicolor adventure we love so much.

AGE GUIDELINES
TIMINGS
Every family is different, so although we have indicated guidelines, these are flexible, and we’re happy for you to judge which activities your children will enjoy most. The only exceptions are activities in Peekaboo, which have been designed especially for the very young.
Please be aware that, although we try as hard as we can to stick to the timings in the programme, the nature of a festival means that timings can slip, and some flexibility will be needed. Some of the best experiences can be the ones you chance upon. WORKSHOP BOOKINGS
PROGRAMME CHANGES Any programme changes will be written up on the programme change board by the Information Tent and on the blackboard at the entrance to the area where the performance/activity has changed. If you’re heading for something specific in a further flung area (Tales of Animalia, High Seas, Silver Screen), it’s worth swinging by the programme change board first.
Most activities do not need to be booked, just turn up at the start or drop in, depending on what it is. A few workshops do need to be booked, this is specified in the programme. To book a workshop you need to go to the area where the workshop is being held and book with our lovely area stewards. You can book from 9am for morning sessions and 12pm for afternoon sessions each day.

Who will be victorious in this year's Tribal Tournament? Will the underdog fish, who surprised so many in 2016 retain their title? Will those foxes regain glory? Will the owls snatch it back in their feathered grasp? Will the dark horses (or y'know, stags) sneak up and surprise us all? Or will it be new team bee that buzz their way to victory? Festival families, pick from owls, foxes, frogs, stags, lions, fish or bees, and bring your tribal allegiance to Just So.

5 Take your gold pebbles to the village
green and hand them to your tribal leader, to be added to the tribal scoreboard

OPENING TIMES
SAFETY & SE C U RITY
Car parks 12 noon on Friday 9am on Saturday & Sunday Campers are welcome to stay on site until 11am on Monday 21st August, but we do ask that you are packed up and ready to hit the road by then.
We have ESP security on site 24 hours a day throughout the festival they will be located at entrances to site and will also be roaming throughout the festival and campsites. They are here to make sure we’re all safe and can enjoy the festival without any disruption. Please report any incidents or worries to them, they are there to help.
Festival Site 2pm Friday all day Saturday & Sunday Day ticket holders are allowed to stay at the festival from 9am until late (as long as they don’t stay over) High Seas area will close at 10pm and re-open at 8am. Please do not venture into this area of site outside of these times. Our friends from Droylsden Life Saving Club are in place during opening hours as there is open water in this area.
W O RKSHO P B O O KIN G S Most activities do not need to be booked, just turn up at the start or drop in, depending on what it is. A few workshops do need to be booked, this is specified in the programme. To book a workshop you need to go to the area where the workshop is being held and book with our lovely area stewards. You can book from 9am for morning sessions and 12pm for afternoon sessions each day.
FIRS T AI D Trained paramedics from First Response are available on site day and night at our first aid point next to information at the main entrance. In an emergency please alert one of our festival stewards or security who will radio for assistance or make your way to the first aid tent at the main entrance.
LOST CHILDREN Grown-ups please ensure you have written your mobile phone number on your child’s wristband. There is good mobile phone coverage on site and we will call you if you get separated. Please keep your phone charged – there is a charging point at the information tent. Trained staff from School In The Woods will be on hand to care for any lost children until they are reunited with their grown up. Take your children to say hello to them on the Village Green so you all know where it is. Please note that as a family festival children remain the responsibility of parents and carers at all times.
In order to be safe we ask that you respect our ‘No Entry’ signs around site.
CAMPING Nobody is permitted to sleep in the car park, in a tent, car, campervan or caravan. Campervans and caravans will be turned away unless you have booked a campervan/caravan spot directly with us in advance.
W HAT N OT T O BRIN G: Any animals, glass, bikes, fireworks, kites or sound systems.
TROLLEY HIRE In attendance at Just So Festival will be Cart To Camp,a trolley hire service to help you carry all your kit from your car to where you decide to camp. You can book this in advance through our website. A hire point will be located in the car park, near the entrance to the campsites. This is where you can hire a trolley, load up and ease into the festival. If you have children with you, from Friday 8pm, you will be able to hire a trolley overnight for one, two or three nights, to wheel the little ones around in. Allowing you to catch the late performances whilst they are either enjoying the ride or asleep, safe and sound, right by your side.
G ETTIN G AR O U N D T HE SITE The festival site isn’t huge, but might get too much for little legs. There is a hard-standing path around the site, which will be fine for most pushchairs, wheelchairs and buggies (though off-road versions will be more nimble). Almost all of the areas are directly accessible with wheelchairs/pushchairs with the exception of some areas in the Spellbound Forest. We recommend a baby carrier/sling to make sure that you don’t miss out on anything and there will be a buggy park area and sling library to make this easier for you.
COOKING AND FIRES We absolutely love campfires, however we need to restrict them to the main campfire circle – our lovely friends at the Cheshire fire service have been very very clear on this! There are no fires allowed anywhere else on site, the same rules apply in the camping areas. Any bbq or cooking equipment must be raised off the floor by at least 15cm (6inch) to prevent fires and damage to the grass. If you are changing gas canisters for your cooker, please do so outside and some distance away from the tents. For safety reasons don’t ever use cooking equipment inside your tent. Also, and for safety reasons, please don’t use candles or lanterns containing candles in the camping areas. Chinese lanterns are also banned as the wire within them is very dangerous to livestock and there are a number of power lines running above the site. Please be sensible and help us to keep the festival and surrounding countryside safe. Due to power cables you may not fly kites on the festival site.
T O I LETS A N D SHO W ERS There are toilets situated around the site, marked on the map. Your camping area may not be right next door to the loo, but should be no more than a five minute walk. The toilets are a mixture of portable loos and stand alone trailers with flushable loos. If you notice that toilets have run out of loo paper or are getting a bit dirty then please let a steward know. There are shower blocks with lovely hot water, which are marked on the map. If you have tiny tots, please head to Peekaboo for baby bathtime. There is a sink area for pot washing near the showers as well as sinks for teeth brushing and washing.
P HO N E C HARG IN G A phone charging service is available at the Information Tent at the main entrance, please bring your own charger. We ask for a small donation for this service.
A LC OHO L & SM O KIN G You can bring alcohol into the campsites but not onto the festival site. Our bars operate a Challenge 25 policy. Please remember that the smoking ban applies to all buildings and marquees.
ESSEN TIA L S If you’ve forgotten your tent pegs or other camping essentials, need some bread or milk then head to the General Store near the Information Tent.

LO S T P R O P ERTY Any lost property will be handed into the Information Tent. Please report anything missing there and go there to check and see if items have been handed in. Post festival you can email us about any missing items at hello@justsofestival.org.uk making sure the subject is LOST PROPERTY. The festival takes no responsibility for loss or damage to property incurred at the festival.
IN F O RMATIO N More detailed information can be found on our website at justsofestival.org.uk On site you can ask any of our wonderful volunteers or head to the information tent at the main entrance. To contact us directly before or after the festival please email hello@justsofestival.org.uk
N EXT Y EAR The dates for next year’s festival are 17th/18th/19th August 2018. Early Bird tickets will go on sale on Friday 25th August 2017 at noon at justsofestival.org.uk In addition to Just So Festival you can keep up to date with our other adventures via wildrumpus.org.uk.
AC C ESSIBI LITY We’re committed to ensuring a more accessible and enjoyable experience for disabled festival goers and those with specific requirements or additional needs. We are working closely with Attitude Is Everything to make this possible and are thrilled to have been awarded Gold on their Charter of Best Practice. Please let us know at the information tent if you are experiencing difficulties, we will do our utmost to help. Accessible toilets and showers are marked on the map. There is a charging point for wheelchair batteries and other access equipment avaialble 24hrs at the first aid point at the main entrance. This is also where you will find a lockable fridge to store medicines – please ask a member of the first aid team. If a moment of quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the festival is required then you can head to the Autism Inclusive tent opposite the Observatory, it also has a changing area for children or young people with additional needs. A hearing loop system is in place in the information tent and at wristband exchange. We have an access manager who is available to help pre-event or on site. If you have any queries about accessibility drop him a line on callum.hogg@wildrumpus.org.uk or ask for him on site at the information tent.
SITE & S U S TAIN ABI LITY We love the Rode Hall Estate and aim to leave no trace after the festival. This is especially important as livestock graze on the parkland - help us to achieve this by putting litter in the bins and ensure that you leave your camping pitch completely clear (especially those pesky tent pegs). No glass is allowed on site. Please respect yours and our neighbours and keep any noise in the campsites to a minimum. Here’s some info on how you can help us to produce a more environmentally event: Bring a water bottle and refill it at the water points on site marked on your map. You can also purchase a beautiful stainless steel Just So Festival water bottle in advance or at our merchandise stall on site. (Do not drink directly from the taps and do not use the stand pipes for washing up pots and pans, use the sinks provided). This year we have introduced reusable cups at our bars. On your first visit to the bar you will be charged £1 for your cup. When you bring your cup back, to any of the bars, you can have it refilled, exchange for a new cup to return it to get your £1 back. You can of course keep the cup as a momento of the weekend if you would rather. We encourage our audience to offset their carbon emissions from their travel to the festival with a donation option at the point of ticket purchase. Donations goto certified carbon reduction projects through the Energy Revolution campaign, organised by Powerful Thinking, we have to date donated over £1,000 to this scheme – thanks for your support. There are recycling bins around site and in the campsite, please use them. We will be sorting your waste further on site and residual waste that cannot be composted or recycled will be turned into biofuel. We have taken the Festival Vision: 2025 Pledge - We aim to achieve a 50% reduction in festival-related annual GHG emissions by 2025. We appreciate all your support in making this possible.
Our 2017 festival merchandise is available in advance from www.justsofestival.org.uk, and on site from our charming little shops near the main entrance and on the Village Green.
We’re reducing waste further this year, so there won’t be any disposable plastic bottles on site. Bring a water bottle with you or buy one of our lovely stainless steel Just So Festival ones.
This year, all of our t-shirts and hoodies are 100% organic cotton, and printed using water-based inks to reduce our impact on the environment.

Just So Festival is organised by Wild Rumpus a small not for profit social enterprise based year round at the Whirligig our woodland offices on the Rode Hall Estate. Wild Rumpus build breath-taking worlds, immersing families in incredible stories and moments of wonder. We deliver ground breaking arts events outdoors for families, which aim to inspire curiosity and leave a legacy of positive social, economic and cultural impact. We believe all families deserve access to the highest quality arts and so we invest in artists making work, we deliver a comprehensive volunteer programme and try to break down barriers for families who find it more difficult to participate. We also believe we have a responsibility to produce environmentally sustainable events which encourage a legacy of sustainable living.
We are very grateful to you for buying tickets to Just So Festival and allowing us to carry out our ambitions. If you would like to contribute further to our accessibility programme, helping deaf and disabled audiences or families who are economically disadvantaged to participate, to our arts programming investing in new and emerging artists, or our sustainability programme, then you can do so at our Information Tent. For more information about Wild Rumpus and all of our other incredible events head to wildrumpus.org.uk and we hope to see many of you at our forthcoming adventures at Chester Zoo.
As a not-for-proďŹ t community interest company, all of our proďŹ t goes back into our arts programmes. Our programmes have been developed to support emerging artists, create pioneering schemes for our volunteers, and to take families of all shapes and sizes on creative adventures. Any donation that you can make means we can invest in our volunteers, invite families to our events who could not otherwise afford to come, host training sessions in our woodland site, and invest in making our site more accessible for those who identify as Deaf or disabled, to name just a few. You can therefore be assured that when you support us, your money will be fed straight back into the brilliant volunteer waiting to greet you, the outstanding performers we are currently booking, the family next to you in the audience, and the community we work within. Thank you for your generosity.
You can donate online at www.wildrumpus.org.uk or at the donation boxes around site.
There is much to be thankful for in our festival world, not least you — our wonderful audience — who bring your endless enthusiasm and brilliant imaginations to our festival. In no particular order we are also phenomenally grateful to the following people. Our incredible performers that recognise the power of stories to transform the way we see the world, with a particular mention to our go-to master of ceremonies Geoff Bird. The sponsors and funders who have got on board with our vision and put their money behind us: this year that is Medela, Dorset Cereals, Natural Retreats, The Week Junior and Sibelco. Aparticular mention and big bucketload of thanks goes to Weleda who continue to invest in us year on year, whose ethos as an organisation aligns so beautifully well with ours, they share so many of our hopes and dreams for the future of our environment. To the wonderful funders who read our application forms and see something worth supporting, who help us focus on quality and think about those all important outcomes and outputs of our work – Arts Council England, Cheshire East Council, Cheshire Communities foundation, Unlimited Impact, The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, and the BFI. To our colleagues in the arts and festival sectors, who we work with year round to help raise the bar and push the boundaries of what outdoor arts experiences for families look like. We are constantly inspired and supported by colleagues and friends in a number of networks which we form part of, including Without Walls, Big Imaginations, Global Local, Northern Festivals Network, ISAN, AFO, AIF, BAFA and ACA.
Stewarding & Waste – Sue and James and all at Wicked Events, it says something quite special about the team leaders when they can, against all odds, manage to make car parking and waste collection enjoyable. Security – ESP Security and in particular Steven Mewis who helps us to sleep easier in our beds at night. Tech – the Stage Management Company who have held our hands and plugged us in from the very first Just So Festival in 2010. Those hard working folk from H2O Hire ltd, UK Loos and First Response, Droylsden Life Savers Club, Posh Frocks & Wellies, School In the Woods and The Ticketsellers. Our friends at Creative Tourist, Marketing Cheshire, Enjoy Staffordshire & Families. Photographers exemplar Chris Payne, Andrew Alcock, teneight, Mark Carline and Gail Griggs, videographers TripleDotMakers who capture the festival so beautifully and help us to relive it long after the event. Catering – our volunteer and crew catering CateredByJustin provide us with the most mouth watering fodder to keep us on our feet. The Wilbraham family at Rode who allow us to host our festival in their beautiful grounds and turn it into a playground of the imagination. The Coopers –Rarely in life do you meet people as generous with their time, energy and enthusiasm as our favourite local farming family the Coopers, we’re very grateful to have them in our world. Last but not least the team of people who come together to make it happen:
Our volunteers - an exceptionally marvellous bunch of people who wow us with their energy and enthusiasm, come together to make new friends, learn new skills and we hope, have the most rewarding time when they see the audience’s happy faces. Our Design team (Matt Collins, Louis Malpass and Tom Fenwick with support from Tiago Nuno) With such imagination, ingenuity and attention to detail, they fill our site with inspiring installations and signage at every turn – we’d be a poorly put together outfit without them. Our production team – the most hard working, dedicated bunch of brilliant folks you could wish to meet. Working with this lot day in, day out makes work a pleasure, we have an incredibly incredible team - (the following to be read as if we are the lead singers introducing our band members): on programming we have Cathryn Peach Barnes, on production management Liz Pickering, on access and safeguarding Callum Hogg, on graphic design Rory Clifford, on volunteer management. Aileen Ging, on site management Daniel Pearson and backing vocals Margarida Cunha And last but by no means least on Marketing & PR we have Gemma Gibb and Olivia Kehoe, they keep us on our toes on a daily basis, there’s no resting on your laurels with these guys around, they are our communications team extraordinaire, if we could clone them then surely world domination would be next. Thank you, thank you, you lovely lot. “The power of imagination makes us infinite.” — John Muir
