FITZPARK, WINDMILL STREET | MASTERPLAN As part of an ‘Invest in Arup’ project ‘Streets for People’, Arup have worked in collaboration with the Fitzrovia Partnership to deliver a pop-up parklet on Windmill Street, situated in W1. The scheme was funded by the Fitzrovia Partnership BID in their vision to provide clean air and a healthier urban environment. The BID has been secured by CABB (Clean Air Better Business) from the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund. FitzPark was designed, engineered and planted by Arup, the space includes informal seating, cafe and work space clustered around seasonal planting which is maintained by the Fitzrovia Partnership. FitzPark aims to create more space for people, promote health and wellbeing, support local businesses as well as improving the look and feel of our city. The pop-up was monitored throughout it’s duration in order to understand the social value benefits of scheme.

ANALYSIS:
Pre-installation, pedestrians that were not just passing between Tottenham Court Road and Charlotte Street (68%) tended to stand and ‘dwell’ for short periods of time (most commonly just 5 minutes) in front of businesses. There were no seating opportunities in Windmill Street. Post-installation, the percentage of pedestrians passing through dropped to 48% and instead 22% of people were now staying at the parklet for as much as 1520 minutes at a time. People were observed sitting at the parklet, either on benches or on the artificial grass surface, for extended periods of time and eating lunch, reading a book, or chatting/ meeting with other users. During the morning and afternoon Fitzpark was also popular for tea, coffee or cigarette breaks.

Landscape Institute | Landscape Ambassador
I am a key member of the Arup Connect Cultures Committee, which is the cultural, religious and ethic diversity strand in the Arup UKMEA’s family of diversity networks. The aim of the network is to foster an inclusive and equal opportunity work environment that respects employees individual differences and values.
At present, I am a guest lecturer and external student adviser for final year undergraduate and MA landscape architecture students at the Leeds School of Architecture within Leeds Beckett University.
As part of the Landscape Institutes Landscape Ambassador Programme, I currently meet secondary school students to explain what our profession is, the type of work we undertake and the wider challanges we currently face, including global warming, increased housing demand within our cities and the demand for additional green space and public realm.
