A Letter From the Editor While I have enjoyed working on every issue thus far, I must say that this issue is particularly dear to my heart. When asked by multiple people why I decided to center this issue around the word, “indulge,” I realized I might also need to explain my reasoning to the readers. To put it quite simply, it’s because in January and February we’re told not to indulge. To make up for the fact that we ate pumpkin pie and indulged on cookies in November and December. I disagree with that sentiment. I like pumpkin (okay... pecan!) pie and cookies. Why should I feel guilty for that? That’s also one of the reasons I created the fictionalized modern day version of Marie Antoinette... I wanted a strong female lead for the photoshoot that was a bit of a rebel. The real Marie Antoinette actually was a rebel as well. Interestingly enough one of her first rebellious actions is in opposition to the image most people create in their minds of this notable French royal. She allowed herself to be painted in garb that was not as luxurious as what those on the royal court were supposed to be portrayed in. She was her own person and that seems to have gotten lost in an overabundance of linking her to a quote she never said. Yes, the famous, “let the eat cake,” has never actually been linked to her concretely.

I wish the same for you. Or at least that you will be transported to this beautiful place of minimal guilt and freedom to indulge.

I hope you enjoy.

juxtaPOSE Magazine, LLC January Issue

It is this strong lead that I hope readers can find within themselves. The ability to allow themselves indulgence and to believe that they deserve small indulgences much more than they deserve self-deprivation. I can say that on the shoot I certainly allowed myself to indulge in both a couple of white chocolate peppermint macarons and the best hot chocolate I have ever had in the city (a big thank you to La Patisserie Chouquette and Patrick Devine!). No guilt either.

What is an easy way to look pulled together? An accent necklace. You can add a chunky piece of neckwear to nearly every outfit and look put together. Feel like wearing a sweatshirt and jeans? Pair a big sparkly necklace with a crew neck sweatshirt, skinny jeans (or a sassy mini skirt) and heels and you have yourself an outfit that looks chic and unexpected.

All photos courtesy of Sarah Stallmann and TheWickedWallflower.com How can I wear a blazer and still look chic? Blazers are always chic--the brighter the better! Try pairing one with a vintage tee, skinny pants and booties for a casual night out, or with a mini dress, heels, and a sparkly necklace for dressier occasions.

wear boots?

juxtaPOSE Magazine, LLC January Issue 17

I am obsessed with ankle boots, especially the ones that hit just above the ankle bone. I would suggest wearing them with a slim cut denim that you can cuff at the bottom to showoff both the boots and your cute winter socks (try vibrant color socks, the peep of color will make any outfit instantly more fashion forward). They are also a great shoe to rock with skirts and dresses, especially with tights during the winter months.

AN OPEN LETTER TO ZIEZO AND ST. LOUIS

Lynn Zimmers is one of the fashion editors at juxtaPOSE and can list Ziezo on her resume. When hearing about Ziezo’s plans to shut their doors, she wrote the following.

T he definition of Ziezo can’t really be pinned down.

50

juxtaPOSE Magazine, LLC January Issue

It is Dutch in origin and loosely translated it means, “It’s all right.” I prefer to think that this special little boutique created the actual definition. Ziezo means you have the capability of being creative regardless of where you are. It means local community. IT MEANS, “THE COOLEST PLACE ON EARTH!”

Carol is my good friend of over 25 years! She has what the great entertainers all have- a kind of inherent star quality: she exudes conviction and strength of character while at the same time drawing you in with her warmth and desire to connect. TO CAROL, WITH LOVE

By Jena McClintock, Previous Buyer at Ziezo, currently a gypsy in Texas

I distinctly remember my

first trip to Ziezo. I was a completely awkward fourteen year old and upon crossing the threshold, I became increasingly aware of it. I had never before been surrounded by so much cool. The girls behind the vintage glass counter top embodied a chicness that my teenage self could never hope to attain. Every garment seemed special and hand selected, the shoes were like nothing seen before and the jewelry was beyond covetable. I think I touched every single thing in the store not once, but twice, in hopes that some of this would rub off on me.

ankle socks and some orthopedic looking black brogues. These shoes would later be replaced by black Monkey Boots, my second of many acquisitions from Ziezo.

That dress was my first clue into the transformative power of fashion. In it, my acne prone skin shined not from oil build up but from my inner confidence. I wore it so much because I liked who I became with it on. I wasn’t aware of it at the time but that dress changed me, as did my first trip to Ziezo.

juxtaPOSE Magazine, LLC January Issue

From her, I learned much

of what I know about the world of retail and it was an education that no school could offer. She gave me tremendous opportunities and I tried to return the favor by working tirelessly. It was in many ways my dream job. Tell Us About Yourself:

I was born and raised here in St. Louis. I’m outgoing and happy, and love to make people laugh and feel better about themselves. I’m 25 years old, and am married to my amazing husband Jon. Our son Isaak turns two years old this month. I adore any kind of music, but especially the kind that makes me dance. I have two adorable dogs named Sweetie & Rayna. I’ve always loved fashion and photography since I was a little girl! My God, family and friends mean the world to me, and truly believe I would not be where I am today without them.

When did you begin your modeling and acting career?

At age 25, you’d wonder why I’ve only been pursuing modeling and acting for a year. We all have our insecurities and have all felt that we’re not good enough at some point. Those feelings are what’s held me back all of these years.

juxtaPOSE Magazine, LLC January Issue

What Better Way

64

Than a Q&A?

I thrived in the administrative part of the business world, but didn’t think I could make it far in the modeling world, mainly because of the competition I knew I’d be facing. I thought I’d at least try.... If I failed at it, at least in the future I’d look back knowing I did my best..and TRIED. You cannot ever be successful in something until you at least try it, right? Thankfully, my husband gave me the extra push I needed, and then God opened doors for me I never thought were there to begin with. I’ve worked with

“The only person truly holding you back is yourself” a few different agencies this year and then signed a contract with a local agency here in St. Louis a few months ago.

What mate

is

your ultidream/goal?

I can see myself representing a company by modeling their designs or being the spokesperson for them. My crazy out-there goals are to be on Saturday Night Live or cast in a major movie/ television show role. There’s no such thing as dreaming too big!

Are you working on any projects right now?

I’m super excited that I will begin filming my first movie role this month! It’s called I Miss Me, and will be released sometime in mid-late 2014. I also have several photo shoots and runway shows planned for 2014. Who knows what other opportunities will come my way!

What advice would you give to someone else wanting to pursue their dreams?

It’s a mixture of things really. I was in shape before getting pregnant, so that helped me out tremendously. I also nursed my son, so most of the weight fell off that way. Also, I do pilates and other fitness classes as much as I can with the time I have to stay fit.

What are your GO-TO cosmetics in a time crunch?

Concealer and mascara save my life. Okay, not really, but you get the picture. A neutral lipgloss on the lips seals the deal.

What’s your favorite food?

Cereal, mashed potatoes, sweet potato fries...ANY carbs really. And dark chocolate too of course

What’s your Dream Vacation?

Somewhere with a semi-secluded beach and food and drinks readily accessible!

GO FOR IT! The only person truly holding you back is yourself. We ALL have insecurities, we all have our issues and a mental list of “things to work on.” Stop caring about what others think of you (I’m still working on this part). If you don’t have anyone cheering you on, cheer yourself on! And don’t let failure hold you back... Walt Disney was told by many he had no creative ideas and should give up his dream. Funny to think someone told him that now, right?

How did you lose all of your baby weight after having your son?
