Message from

The SAC Chairman’

Since 2007, I have been part of the JYian family serving as a School Advisory Committee (SAC) member before I assumed the post of SAC Chairman in 2015. I am very heartened to see how Juying Secondary School has grown and transformed over all these years. The school has undoubtedly grown and developed to become a choice school for many Primary 6 pupils and parents as the demand for Secondary 1 places has been overwhelming for all the three streams in the past 2 years. This is only possible because of the strong school leadership, a committed team of caring and competent teachers, and a very positive school culture where everyone places great emphasis on care and learning for the students. I am delighted and proud that Juying Secondary has two teachers who received national recognition for their passion and hard work in 2016. Mr Cai Zhiwen, Head/Discipline, a recipient of the Outstanding Youth in Education Award 2016, believes in motivating his students and shaping their character through meaningful programmes. Mrs Katherine Leong, English and Mathematics teacher, was awarded the LEAP Award (Listening Educator for Advancement and Progress Award), given out by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, to recognise her exemplary work in going the extra mile to influence her students positively and her dedication in inspiring her students to excel. My heartiest congratulations to the school for the stellar achievements in both academic and character aspects for 2016! It is definitely not an easy feat to achieve sustained valueadded results for four consecutive years. The staff of Juying Secondary have shown that with a shared vision and mission, coupled with strong belief and right values, we can achieve our goals and dreams. I will definitely continue to garner the support of the SAC members to build a strong partnership with the Principal, and his staff to bring Juying Secondary School to greater heights! Together We Will Succeed! Mr Andy Koh Chairman School Advisory Committee Juying Secondary School

I am very pleased that over the years we have seen the growth and development of the different cohorts of our students who continue to do the school proud, excelling and demonstrating the R3IGHT values in both the academic and character domains. 2016 was yet another year of celebration as our graduating cohorts achieved sustained value-added results and our Uniformed Groups achieved commendable outcomes with NCDCC achieving Gold and NCC (Sea) Silver for the Best Unit competitions. Our various Aesthetics groups did well in the SYF 2015 presentations and continued to showcase their talents at various platforms such as the 2016 SYF@ Westmall, the River Hong Bao and the Esplanade. Our School Choir has achieved the Platinum award at the 2016 Show Choir competition. Our Applied Learning Programme “Developing confident and competent communicators through oracy skills” has taken shape and was featured by the Straits Times in August about the opportunities and platforms that Juying Secondary provides for every student to go beyond their comfort zone to speak in front of a crowd about an issue close to their hearts. One of our signature programmes, Trips for Internationalisation Experience (TIE) cum Values-In-Action (VIA), has been re-conceptualised to give our Secondary 3 JYians an opportunity to take ownership of their own learning. They identify a social cause, plan a trip as a class with their Form teachers over a 5-month period, and explore their chosen social cause in greater depth in an overseas country of their choice. The development in our students over the years has been noticed, commended and recognised by various stakeholders. Our healthy and steady increase in enrolment, the high percentage of Primary 6 pupils who chose us as their first-choice school, positive feedback by community and grassroots leaders, and several publicity articles in the local papers are definitely testaments of the trust and confidence of the community in our school. All these are possible because we have a dedicated team of teachers and support staff who are strongly committed in carrying out the school’s mission of “Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values and Impacting Lives”. I am also very grateful to have very supportive partners who believe in us and support us in every possible way – our parents and our School Advisory Committee. Our work as educators will never end. It is a journey that we have embarked on as a JYian family and community to bring out the best in our JYians and develop them to be a gracious community of lifelong learners with strength of character. We will continue to strive to do our best, guided by our school’s OYSTER philosophy and our H.E.A.R.T.S. ethos. Together We Will Succeed! Mr Seet Tiat Hee Principal Juying Secondary School

English Language & Literature

VISION

Every JYIAN an effective communicator using Standard English

MISSION

To achieve value-added results by equipping JYians with lifelong learning skills and values

To achieve our department vision of Every JYIAN an effective communicator using Standard English, the English Language & Literature Department built on the following key areas from last year: 1. The Extensive Reading Programme (ERP): We were privileged to have our Vice Principal, Mr Steve Ow, conduct a sharing on an interesting book entitled “Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance?”

The biggest highlight of this year was the Reading Awareness Week in July, which consisted of Book Booths and students sharing about their favourite stories at our Speakers’ Corner. Some of the Secondary 1 students displayed poster boards showing their favourite books and explained why they found these books so enjoyable. This was done during recess in the school canteen and it created quite a buzz. Students were also encouraged to bring books to school for exchange with their classmates.

b. Confidence and Expression through Drama for Sec 2. The Secondary 2 students learnt how to express themselves confidently through drama in putting up skits based on their Literature text, Street of the Small Night Market. The drama lessons were conducted by the Literature teachers during their lessons.

2. The Applied Learning Programme (ALP): This year, the department carried out the following programmes to build competent and confident speakers:

c. Confidence in Public Speaking for Sec 3. The Secondary 3 students went through a two-session workshop and learnt the fundamentals of public speaking - how to present their opinions clearly and competently through group activities and presentations. In addition, all Sec 3 students presented the key learning points from their VIA trips, either at Speaker’s Corner or at morning assembly in Term 3.

a. Competent Pronunciation through Storytelling and Drama for Sec 1. The Sec 1 students went through a two-session workshop in which they learnt how to read stories aloud with accurate pronunciation and appropriate expression. Students had opportunities to perform their stories during the post-examination activities in May. In addition, they learnt how to dramatize scenes from their Literature text, Sing to the Dawn and selected groups from each class put up excerpts from the text as part of the post-examination activities in October.

d. Two new workshops on Presentation Skills were organised for the Lower Secondary students this year as part of the extended curriculum in November. From these workshops, the students learnt to produce feature videos about the school and topics of interest, such as why Singlish should be used. They learnt basic interviewing skills as well as how to present themselves confidently in front of a camera. e. We continued to provide students with opportunities to perform or speak at various platforms. In particular, we sought to build confident speakers by encouraging JYians to address the student and teacher audience at the Speakers’ Corner on issues they were interested in, and about the books they were reading. We are happy that many of them, especially the Upper Secondary levels, took up the challenge to speak in front of a crowd. Well done, JYians!

Secondary One Orientation Camp

Secondary Two R3IGHT Adventure Camp

and Installation

During the camp’s team bonding and interactive activities, the school had seen the Secondary One students exhibiting the school values of R3IGHT: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Harmony and Teamwork. The form teachers, who doubled up as teacher facilitators, used the approach of Identity, Relationship and Choices, to facilitate reflection, with the aim of helping the students to discover their strengths and weaknesses. While the teachers affirmed the students’ strengths, they also advised and encouraged them to have self-management abilities in order to overcome their weaknesses. A vital domain that the school hopes to introduce to the students will be the soft skills, which enable them to communicate and collaborate with their peers.

1

OBJECTIVES • Exhibit the R3IGHT values of respect and responsibility for self and others, resilience and teamwork. • Develop 21st century competencies such as communication and interpersonal skills (listening and problem solving) to build and manage relationships with others. • Establish positive teacher-student relationships through out-of-classroom interactions.

3

On 26 May, 240 Secondary 2 students set out to MOE Labrador Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre to participate in a 3-day, 2-night camp. The organisers of this camp were pleased with how the campers passed test after test in activities requiring perseverance, resilience and teamwork. JYians demonstrated a wonderful camaraderie when they nudged and motivated one another to complete all the outdoor activities as well as the high and low elements course. On the final night of the camp, all hearts and minds were focused on a great campfire session during which every class performed in front of a sizeable audience which consisted of the campers, members of the JYian staff and supportive parents.

Besides the bonding games, the students went through a series of sports CCA audition and selection as well. To exhibit their class bonding spirit, the class was expected to put up a campfire item and present to their parents. As part of the JYian tradition, the Secondary One students were formally embraced by the JYian family during the Installation Ceremony. Every student was presented with a symbolic JYian Pearl by their Form Teacher, which indicates that each student is ready for the inculcation of the school values of R3IGHT. The Secondary One Camp was successfully run and facilitated by our own Secondary Four student leaders, under the guidance of our teachers.

Secondary Three TIE/VIA Programme

Secondary Two LEAD Camp &

Outdoor Education Programme

Secondary Two LEAD Camp This year, Juying Sec changed the focus of our Sec 3 VIA/TIE trips to increase the level of student ownership and involvement in the VIA/TIE process, so as to better achieve the objectives of the VIA/TIE trips: 1. Develop in our students the 21st Century Competencies of global awareness and crosscultural skills and sensitivities; 2. Expose students to Asia, especially South East Asia, and sensitise them to Singapore’s place in the world; and 3. Deepen students’ commitment and rootedness to Singapore.

Hanoi, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

To plan for the trip, our Sec 3 students went through the following steps: Stage 1 • Identified a social issue that they wanted to learn more about. Stage 2 • Conducted online research on how that issue is being tackled in Singapore. • Selected a country that has done well in tackling that issue to visit and learn from.

Lombok, Indonesia

Stage 3 • Crafted their desired learning outcomes from their VIA/TIE trip.

As a follow-up to the VIA/TIE trip, and to give the students an opportunity to further develop themselves and apply what they have learnt, the Sec 3 classes planned their own VIA activity to tackle the social issue they had chosen, but in Singapore’s context. This was conducted in Term 1 2016.

This year, our Secondary 2 student leaders embarked on a self-directed leadership journey at two locations, Jalan Bahtera MOE Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre and Pulau Ubin. Facilitated by our team of dedicated teachers and instructors, our leaders were given more autonomy and were tasked to collaborate and come up with strategies to situations; in the form of planning their schedules, leading expeditions and handling constraints. The leaders challenged and overcame various fears through each activity. Exhibiting the R³IGHT Core Values, the High Elements course, Land Orienteering and 18kmround Ubin Sea Expedition saw the leaders pushed themselves emotionally, physically and mentally. Yet they demonstrated formidable levels of resilience, responsibility and humility to set new records as a team.

Healthy Bodied and Inquisitive Minded JYians

MISSION

Our Outdoors, Our Classroom

The school has programmes that provide opportunities for students to be developed cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally through the outdoor experience. Outdoor Education is an effective platform to encourage students to be self–directed learners and develop their inquisitive minds. Outdoor experiences immerse the learner in authentic situations within personal and social contexts, with real consequences to themselves, others and the environment. Students embrace diversity and engage in problem-solving and decision-making activities. Such authentic situations provide rich platforms for social-emotional learning. These valuable skills benefit the students’ immediate circle of influence (i.e. peers), the school, creating a vibrant community which embraces diversity.

VISION

Every JYian a Values-Driven Leader

MISSION

To develop confident, compassionate, competent and committed students leaders who serve the school, community and nation.

This year, the focus was on the development of selfdirectedness in students and on competency-centric training. A National Youth Achievement Award (Bronze) was introduced to inspire Secondary 2 students to develop self-reliance and resilience, through physical activities and service to the community. Through the sharing of personal leadership journeys by Head Prefects, the lower secondary students were inspired to self-nominate as Prefects.

Juying Secondary held its Student Leaders’ Investiture on the 12th of April 2016 to celebrate the inauguration of our next batch of student leaders taking on their respective leadership roles in their classes, Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) and the Prefectorial Board. This year, the Prefectorial Board came up with the theme, Polaris the North Star. They found it representative of the student leaders’ aspiration to be the brightest guiding star and their aim to lead the JYians through trials and tribulations. With this hope, Candyce Low, the newly elected Head Prefect of 2016, reminded the student leaders to stay strong during challenges and be a role model to their peers.

2

Over the March and June holidays, Secondary 1 to 3 student leaders learnt theories and competencies of self-mastery, relationship-mastery and leadership. The seniors applied their learning by organising teambuilding activities for their juniors, thus fostering bonds and building friendships across different levels. More significantly, the Prefectorial Board took an active step towards representing the voice of the student body, by conceptualising and holding the inaugural Students’ Conversations 2016.

Student - led Parent Teacher Conference The Student-led Parent Teacher Conference takes on a different approach from the conventional biannual parent teacher conference. In a Student-led Parent Teacher Conference, students are empowered to take ownership of their learning. Prior to the conference, students set academic and character goals. They gather feedback from subject teachers on ways to improve academically. Under the guidance of their form teachers, students prepare their presentation and share these goals and achievements with their parents. In this way, the ownership of learning is transferred to the students. As they share, they build confidence and take responsibility for their learning.

Through Aesthetics excursions and assembly programmes, JYians have the chance to be exposed to a variety of art forms to expand their aesthetics horizon so that they become more aware of the numerous career paths that a singing/dancing/music interest can pan out in future as viable career options.

An enthusiastic team of Secondary Three JYians displayed their R3IGHT values through a community building event at Clementi Community Centre (CC) for three consecutive days. These students were galvanised to beautify Clementi CC for its Open House on 29 May. Assisted by our Green Club teacher, Mr Billy Goh, the local VIA team landscaped an important segment of the centre.

The ECG Committee also organised other activities such as ECG Lessons, Targeted Assembly Talk, Early Admission Exercise (EAE) Special Programme and Career Talks for the students, giving them the awareness of the different career options in the various sectors like the Sciences, Infocomm, Media, Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Publicity. Graduating students attended structured workshops on a 600-character EAE write-up as well as Interviewing Skills and Strategies. Through these diverse platforms and exposure, JYians will be able to make informed decisions regarding their plans for the future.

On the day of 29th of May, residents and friends arrived at the sparkling new centre to participate in a range of activities such as balloon sculpturing, colouring and other interactive activities for children. Our JYians rose to the task and further divided themselves into events teams to assist with the activities.

2

Through this, our VIA students were given a golden opportunity to interact with the residents and also to extend their values of Graciousness and Teamwork to the greater community.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration

This year, JYSS ushered in Chinese New Year (CNY) 2016 with a joint celebration for Total Defence Day (TDD). The celebration commenced with a Lion Dance performance sponsored by our SAC Member, Mr Sam Ng Say Peng. Excitement mounted with the appearance of the mysterious God of Fortune who showered students with sweet blessings. It was an uproarious moment when the identity of the mysterious figure was revealed - our very own Vice Principal, Miss Jennifer Wong. This year, the teachers and students performed the customary act of exchanging oranges and red packets. Exchanging oranges has always been a practice during Chinese New Year. Oranges symbolise good fortune and wealth. This signifies that regardless of race, we can all share blessings with our friends.

1

1

In commemorating TDD, the TDD message was infused into every performance item on that day. It started with a video presentation on the Chinese New Year celebration in 1942 when Singapore fell to the Japanese troops on the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a sober reminder that everyone has a part to play in keeping the nation safe and peaceful. The concert kicked off with the Juying Show Choir performing the popular classic “Gongxi Gongxi”.

2

2

Students and staff of Juying Secondary School welcomed Hari Raya Aidilfitri by enjoying a concert that was put up by our very own Jyian-Got-Talent students, Cultural Dance Group and Nutz Crew members. This year, we had Farhan of 3T1 and Heather of 3A1 to host the concert. Besides hosting, they also shared on the phenomenon of the hipster trend and how it has influenced the Muslim community in celebrating Hari Raya. In addition to that, this year’s celebration was extra special as our male Muslim teachers collaborated and sang a Hari Raya song during the concert’s finale.

3

Our Secondary 3E2 students amused the audience with a raucous performance of Three Sentences and A Half (三句半表演). The Cultural Dance Group performed a dance item which infused cultural and contemporary elements together. The different influences mirror the different races living in harmony and balance in Singapore.

The theme for this year’s National Day was “Building our Singapore of Tomorrow”, which was a fitting theme for the first National Day of Singapore’s next 50 years. In line with this theme, Juying Secondary School decided to have a more inclusive approach to our National Day school celebrations this year. We started the day off with a school parade with a unique twist. In the past, only our Uniformed Group cadets were involved in the parade. This year, in addition to our National Cadet Corps (Sea) and National Civil Defence Cadet Corps forming a combined Guardof-Honour contingent, we also included volunteers from the Sec 1, Sec 2 and Sec 3 cohorts to form three cohort supporting contingents, with a fourth supporting contingent formed by the staff! This was a truly commendable effort as the cohort contingent participants had to attend parade trainings and rehearsals on top of their own CCA training sessions, which often led to the trainings and rehearsals being conducted early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

with a well-spaced mix of performances and awards presentations. There was a masterful precision drill display by our NCC (Sea) cadets, followed by awards presentations by our two Uniformed Groups and our Show Choir. Two national songs, “We Will Get There” and “Tomorrow’s Here Today”, came next, followed by the Colours Awards (Achievement). Our very own Juying boyband then performed “What Do You See”, while our Hip Hop group put up a very energetic dance item choreographed to this year’s National Day song, “Tomorrow’s Here Today”. The Colours Awards (Service) followed, before our very own teachers, Mr Melvin Tan, Mdm Diyana and Mr Rushdi, performed a trilingual version of the evergreen “Home”, with Malay lyrics composed by Mdm Maslinni.

Following the parade, the entire school adjourned to the school hall. What greeted us was a lovely stage backdrop, where there was a Singapore flag and an “SG51” formed by balloons, painstakingly done early that morning by the students from Sec 3T1!

Following the rousing item, our ELDDS went on stage to lead the school in reciting our Recollections, before we gave out our Colours Awards (Leadership). Our Juying girl group then performed another national song, “In A Heartbeat”, before we had all performers back on stage for a rousing finale – a medley of “Semoga Bahagia”, “Munnaeru Vaalibaa”, “小人物的心声”, and “We Are Singapore”. It was indeed a moving sight to see all JYians, together with the teachers, all dressed in red and white, standing, singing, taking the pledge in unison, and wishing Singapore a Happy 51st Birthday!

After the National Day message read out by Mr Seet, the concert cum awards presentation proceeded

VISION

Every JYian An Artist Within

Long Term Goals

At the end of 4 to 5 years of education, every JYian will be able: i) to do basic drawing and rendering skills, ii) to play a musical instrument of a known song and sing-a-long, iii) to perform a simple line-dance routine (JYian Dance).

6

5

At Juying Secondary School, our Learning for Life Programme – iACE@Juying (I Appreciate, I Create, I Exhibit my talents at Juying) seeks to plant the seed of aesthetics appreciation in all our JYians; develop their artistic abilities in the different fields of performing arts and provide them with opportunities to create and exhibit their artistic talents. Under our holistic Learning for Life Programme, JYians get to learn to play a musical instrument such as guzheng or ukulele; learn different dance styles such as hip hop and jazz, go on excursions to museums and watch local and international productions. It is our firm belief that every child is an artist within. Hence, it is our mission to nurture every JYian to bring out the artist in them and achieve our vision of ‘Every JYian An Artist Within’.

MISSION

A platform to inculcate interest and strengthen character through Cultural Dance

9

The Cultural Dance has been actively involved in school and outdoor performances with a variety of dance styles such as Chinese contemporary dance, Malay dance, Indian dance and Modern dance. This is not possible without the care and guidance from our CCA teachers-in-charge, Mdm Diyana, Ms Chen Yonghua, Ms Sharifah and Ms Li Jing. More notably, our instructor, Mr Adam Azali, has led the dancers with his versatile dance knowledge and choreography skills. The students develop their understanding of the basic dance skills through the varieties of dance styles that they are exposed to. This helps them to structure and strengthen their knowledge of dances. Every November, Cultural Dance conducts a bonding camp. Through the team bonding camp, students learn more about each other and respect other races and religion. It also provides the opportunity for students to display their graciousness by looking out for others and embrace teamwork by sharing what they know about dance. As a whole, the cultural dance group is a platform that supports and further develops the character building of the students of Juying Secondary School.

1

To develop responsible, respectful and resilient cadets to face the challenges of the changing world and be successful citizens.

MISSION

To nurture committed cadets who are resourceful, responsible, resilient, loyal leaders and team players through fun and challenging military-related activities.

Long Term Goal

To groom our cadets to show greater social responsibility and to take on an increased ownership of their school, unit and committee.

2

2016 has been an eventful one for our NCC (Sea) coed unit. The year kicked off with our recruitment drive for Junior Cadets where we were able to attract 21 recruits, including 6 female cadets, to join our NCC (Sea) family. The emphasis this year was on the various water activities we had planned to undertake and that helped to attract the Secondary One students to join us. Thanks to all the hard work put in by the cadets and officers, our NCC unit achieved the Silver Award in the Annual Best Unit Competition (BUC) for the year 2015, which is an improvement from the Bronze Award for the past few years. This year also marked the formation of our 1st Precision Drills Squad (PDS) Team. Our cadets travelled to other institutions to learn the required techniques and movements which made up their first performance at the school’s National Day Celebration.

3

VISION

In the 2016 National Canoe Slalom Championship, our cadets exhibited resilience and determination against strong competition from rival schools to attain the following achievements.

2016 saw Juying Choir continue on our journey towards not only becoming an ensemble with diverse abilities but also individuals with the technique, personality and temperament to present ourselves as confident young adults with a burning passion for singing, music, dance and performing. 2

Dazzling success was achieved at the premier event for local showchoirs: B*Dazzled 2016. Performing a mash-up of 2 powerfully inspiring songs: Victorious and Firework, the JY showchoir sang with a precision and fervor that was coupled with a stunning visual tableaux featuring various toys in a toyshop at night coming to life! The concept was developed by the students themselves who had a hand in the planning and design of the costumes. This student self-direction was made more meaningful and greatly rewarded in the achievement of the “Best Costume” prize along with a coveted overall Platinum award. Our strength and depth were also on display in the Solo category, where one of our newest members, Atiqah (1E2), was awarded an Emerald award as a semi-finalist. 2017 will be an exciting and challenging year where we will, once again, proudly represent JYSS at the SYF Presentation for traditional choirs and further our journey into the popular realm of showchoirs with B*Dazzled 2017. Promoting a love for nature at JYSS was the focus for our Secondary One activities this year. Particular attention was given to the landscaping of our school. The Secondary One Green Club members dedicated their attention to caring for and maintaining the plants and green areas of our school on a regular basis. This year, we were awarded the Bronze medal in the Community in Bloom competition. To celebrate the Green Wave 2016, our SAC chairman, Mr Andy Koh, had planted a Kedondong tree near the entrance of the school. Making a commitment to environmental sustainability was the focus of this year for our Secondary Two and Upper Secondary students. They spread awareness of Earth Hour through pledge cards that were distributed to fellow JYians and teachers. Following which, students were committed to turning off non-essential lights for one hour on Earth Hour day to take action against climate change. Our senior members organised The Green Spark, a termly upcycling project, which aimed to share some simple ways to reuse materials and reduce our carbon footprints with fellow JYians. By conducting mini-workshops for interested participants, the Green Club members inspired other JYians to treasure and reuse unused items creatively. This year the members participated in the Waste to Craft Competition, organised by the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). Senior members of the Club won the Encouragement Award with their Multipurpose Bin, made from waste cardboard.

We strive to believe that students should have the opportunity to showcase their creativity and critical thinking, as well as deepen their technical skills. In the Juying Art Club, we provide various platforms for students to broaden minds and develop skills through picking up new skills, as well as through periodic learning journeys to the National Gallery of Singapore. Students are exposed to the works of various artists. Recently, they have learnt about one of the famous local artist, Ms. Georgette Chen (born Chang Li Ying), who contributed to the birth of the Nanyang art style in Singapore. Students were strongly encouraged to try to incorporate her style in their own versions of art. Students had the opportunity to take part in certain school events and national art competitions to showcase their talent and apply their artistic skills. The AV & IT Club aims to develop JYians to be Healthy Bodied and Moral Minded. It provides character development through leadership training, fostering camaraderie and social integration with the application of social and cooperative skills. Led by committed staff, the AV & IT Club helps generate a willingness from the students to excel in their relevant specializations, by delivering a moral judgment of right from wrong through the R3IGHT approach. The AV & IT Club provides supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to further develop their understanding of: Audio/ Visual technology, Digital Photography and Robotics, and to provide support to the school in these areas of speciality. Members learn how to operate digital single reflex cameras and audio/visual systems, programming, editing software, and working in groups..

AV & IT Club provides a platform for students to pick up knowledge and skills in the domains of audiovisual, robotics and photography. In the Audio Visual and Public Address domain (AV/ PA), members undergo rigorous on-the-job training while supporting the various activities and events. Our training includes equipment orienteering, handling and troubleshooting, technical handling tests, teambuilding (Lower Secondary) and manpower management (Upper Secondary). In an effort to mould future leaders, 68 | JUYING SECONDARY SCHOOL

current Presidents and Vice Presidents of the club are given the autonomy to run CCA training under the watchful eyes of the teachers-in-charge who facilitate the CCA. In the Computing, Robotics and Enterprise (CRE-8) domain, students are trained to program and debug a picomouse through theory and practical lessons. Each year, teams are sent to participate in various picomouse competitions. One such example was the StrITwise Hackathon @ Ngee Ann Poly where 64 secondary students participated in an overnight Hackathon where they pitted their programming skills against one another to build the most innovative and creative game over 2 days and 1 night. Two teams from our CRE-8 Robotics club, wowed the judges with their Python programming skills and walked away with the 2nd Prize. In the World Robotics Games 2016, our intrepid team wowed the judges with their resilience in the Line Tracing and Sumobot events which led them to clinch the Most Persevering and Innovative Team title. In the photography domain, students are trained to effectively utilize a myriad of photography skills to aid them in taking stunning pictures during school and external events. Students also get the opportunity to try out different camera models from our DSLR range, along with specialized lenses. These skills are also refined when members get the opportunity to attend photography workshops such as the VJC-Canon Photography Exposé VIII held in 2015. Through providing support for the school and participation in competitions, members are able to put into practice the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork.

The Strategic Games Club aims to develop the minds of its members in thinking critically and creatively through strategy games such as Chinese Chess, International Chess, Carcassone, Settlers of Catan, Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk etc. Our members are encouraged to be self-directed learners, learning strategies through their own research, playing against each other and with opponents from other schools. This year, our students have participated in chess competitions such as the 13th Queenstown CC Chess Championships 2016, Yuhua Chinese Chess Tournament 2016, and the OPL Scholastic Xiangqi Competition 2016. Under the guidance of a coach and the CCA teachers, they worked hard to clinch 6 Bronze awards from the Xiangqi competitions. Our students have learnt the spirit of sportsmanship, humbly and graciously accepting wins and losses, and demonstrated resilience when faced with tough opponents!

They learnt about the principles of game design and the technical skills to create digital games while assuming roles such as a Game Designer, Programmer and Artist. They took part in the Singapore Games Creation Competition, designing games related to the theme on Safety Standards, after which they formed new teams and were given the opportunity to design their own games. It was a platform for them to unleash their creative juices and design a game they could proudly call their own. In November, together with the Art Club and IT Media Club, our club participated in a VIA project to clean up the East Coast Beach. This was a great platform to create awareness on Man’s responsibility towards our environment and promote interactions between members of the various CCAs.

To train & develop the fullest potential of students in the CCA so that they are physically fit, proficient in the skills, tactics and strategies of Badminton

2016 marks a significant milestone for the Badminton Team at Juying Secondary School. We welcomed the second cohort of Girls’ Badminton Team players, increasing the diversity of our CCA members. Despite separate training sessions, both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams have united in several occasions, such as coming together to plan for the upcoming CCA Camp in November. This year, we took part in team tournaments such as the West Zone Inter-school Badminton Championship 2016 and the Wee Kim Wee Badminton Challenge Trophy 2016. Additionally, we also sent two promising players, Teoh Ci Sin (2A2) and Low Jun Kai, Isaiah (2E3) to participate in the Global Eduhub Championships 2016. As Arthur Ashe said, “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” Throughout the year, our players trained with rigor and passion for the sport. Although we did not manage to clinch any medals, our team players displayed tremendous sportsmanship and resilience during the competitions, which was truly admirable. We certainly look forward to the greater achievements in the following year!

Basketball Club aims to develop JYians to be Healthy Bodied and Moral Minded sportsmen who strive for excellence on and off the courts.

MISSION

Through strengthening the JYian Basketballers’ physical stamina and mental endurance, improving their self-discipline, self-confidence and selfesteem and fostering camaraderie and social integration, we aim to develop JYian Basketballers’ character and sportsmanship.

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team” as quoted by Phil Jackson, a renowned and decorated NBA Basketball coach. Basketball is a sport not played individually but as a team. It is a beautiful game where the five players on the court play with one heartbeat. From the many friendly matches with different schools to the National Inter-school Tournament and the 3 vs 3 Basketball tournament, our boys displayed strong resilience and teamwork when faced against strong opponents. During training, the Juying Basketball team not only focuses on the athletic aspects critical to the sport but also on character building and leadership. Values such as resilience, integrity and respect are instilled in every player throughout the training sessions. Team building activities are carried out regularly as well in order to foster team spirit and strong camaraderie among the players. 18th April 2016 was the highlight of the year for the Juying Basketball team as they had the pleasure of meeting up with the Singapore Slingers for the very first time. Singapore Slingers players Ng Han Bin, Desmond Oh & Kelvin Lim hosted a basketball clinic for the Juying Basketball team. They shared training tips and personal experiences as national players. In addition to that, the Singapore Slingers players motivated the boys to work hard in order to achieve their dreams. They were definitely an inspiration to our boys.

Basketball Club 2016

In November this year, we will be conducting a Basketball Camp for our players where they will be participating in activities to strengthen their bond as a team. The following are the 5 aspirations of a JYian Basketballer: 1. I am not a JYian Basketball player. I am a JYian LEADER who happens to play basketball. 2. Our hearts have to be in whatever we do. 3. During critical periods, a leader is not allowed to feel sorry for himself, to be down, to be angry or to be weak. We must beat those emotions. 4. Discipline is doing what we are supposed to do, in the best possible manner, at the time we are supposed to do it. 5. There are 5 fundamental qualities that make a great team. Communication, trust, collective responsibility, care and pride. Each is like a separate finger on a fist, Individually important but unbeatable when together.

2015/2016 has been yet an eventful year for Juying Football. Before the year ended in 2015, our young footballers participated in 3 events including The Castlewood Group Battle Of The Reds 2015, OKTO Cup 2015, and Cigku Sies Senan Cup 2015. On 8 Nov 2015, our young footballers participated in Cigku Sies Senan Cup 2015. It was organized by our Coach’s formal students in aid of Alumni Jin Tai LBKM Bursary. The tournament was named in honour of our current coach Mr Sies Senan, who had formerly taught the Jin Tai football players well during their days in that school. On 14 November 2015, our young footballers participated in a soccer clinic during The Castlewood Group Battle Of The Reds 2015, where they had the chance to interact and learn from the Legends of Liverpool and Manchester united. Muhamad Izuddin B Mohamad N participated in a juggling competition held at the center of the field and won a prize. The match between the Legends at the National Stadium was an enriching and enjoyable experience. 2016 started off with both our ‘C’ and ‘B’ division teams demonstrating great resilience and fighting spirit during the West Zone Inter-School Football Championship 2016. The season had provided great opportunities for our young footballers to learn from our formidable opponents from other school. On 22 May 2016, our B and C division teams represented the school to participate in the ActiveSG Football Academy Five-a-side Youth Tournament 2016. The event provided opportunities for our young footballers to interact with the Academy Principal and former S-League and national footballer Aleksandar Duric, as well as with the five head coaches from the Academy. On 16 July 2016, we partnered with Singapore Disability Sports Council for their flag day in efforts to provide sports 72 | JUYING SECONDARY SCHOOL

and recreational activities to people with disabilities for rehabilitation as well as competitive purpose. We are fortunate to interact with 2 of our national athletes Sammy and Suhaimi who represented Singapore in Wheelchair Basketball and Wheel Chair Tennis. Likewise a series of events have been lined up for our young footballers this November. Our young footballers will be participating in a Football Training Camp organized by the teachers. Our young footballers will also be representing the school to participate in 5-a-side futsal tournament such as ActiveSG Football Festival 2016 and OKTO Cup 2016. We are very thankful for the continuous belief and support by our Juying family and friends.

VISION

Active and gracious netballers excellent sportsmanship.

MISSION

To develop a driven and committed team competent in netball skills and leadership qualities, in a caring and supportive environment.

with

When we first assumed our roles as Captain and ViceCaptain this year, it was very challenging because good communication and organisation skills were needed. Over time, we found our bearings and our team mates were cooperative and always supportive of the decisions we made. Although everyone has different strengths, we complement one another and will always encourage and help one another on court. Through the many wins and defeats at tournaments, and the continuous reflections guided by our teachers and coach, we have improved in netball skills and developed great sportsmanship. Despite tough trainings, our team mates have brought so much laughter into the CCA and made this year truly memorable. For these, we are indeed thankful for the opportunity to lead as Netball Captains.

JPSG Committee recognizes the importance of parents working hand in hand with the school to bring out the best in our children. Forming a team is a very powerful tool in helping our children to be successful in school. Children spend most of their time at home and in school. When teachers and parents are allies and teammates, their combined influence on children is very powerful indeed. JPSG has always been supportive and actively involved in many school events because parents feel welcomed and comfortable interacting with JYians, e.g. Annual Fitness Run, Teachers’ Day Celebration, etc. In addition, parents are always ready to come forward and organize meaningful activities to foster strong relationship between the school, families and with other parents. Our annual parent-initiated activities includes Family Bonding Day, Teachers’ Day Gift-making, and Sandwich-Making for the graduating students sitting for their GCE O-Level Examination. This is a great way to show our children that we take an interest in their education, and it sends a positive message that we consider school a worthwhile cause.

The SWC looks into the wellbeing of the staff of JYSS. In November 2015, the SWC organised a two-day, onenight staff retreat to the Lotus Resort and Spa at Desaru, to rejuvenate after working so hard for the year. We had a lot of fun by participating in the bonding games, enjoying the recreational facilities and having fabulous buffets there. In February 2016, a Chinese New Year Lo Hei was carried out for all staff to celebrate the occasion together. In September, educators had a great time at Raffles Marina where we celebrated our Teachers’ and EAS Day. The theme, “A Night to Remember” which encouraged teachers to turn up in their best, was chosen in consultation with all staff. We have also given out “I3” (Inspiring Learning, Impacting Lives and Inculcating Values) and “R3IGHT” (Responsible, Resilience, Respect, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork) Awards to affirm staff during Teachers’ Day Dinner. Our talented teachers also conducted classes for all staff as post-exam activities. The SWC has also organised a series of Sales@Lounge for the staff to indulge in some retail therapy. We have also implemented the fortnightly “Fruit Day” to encourage healthy eating amongst the staff. In addition, we have also rewarded staff on “No MC Day” by giving out packets of milo.

1A1 Alumni Activities Juying Secondary School values every student – both past and present. In our midst, we have more than 125 JYians who have updated their contact particulars with us at our JYian portal and have kept the valuable relationship strong. One of the objectives of setting up the JYian Alumni is to present opportunities for JYian family members to bond and network. It also serves as a good platform for our Alumni members to contribute your effort and show concern for JYians who need all the guidance and care they can get.

Our old premises

To encourage a more enduring partnership, we have created a new Facebook account and the first bonding session will be held during the school’s Teachers’ Day celebration.
