Coming from Sydney, Australia, Justin’s background is heavily influenced by the board sports culture and youth orientated activation. Action sports fans all over the world witnessed the world’s best skateboarders, who came together for the first ever inaugural Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ in New York City at Hudson River Park’s Pier 62 Skatepark. The three-day skateboarding festival ran from October 4-6 2012 and exhibited the world’s greatest PRO and MASTER’S competitors, including Pedro Barros, Bucky Lasek, Rune Glifberg, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi and Chris Miller Having worked on previous Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ events in Bondi and creating a webs series for the event titled ‘Roll In.’ Justin was asked to be part of the creative team at the first ever Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ New York City creating both the web-series ‘Roll In’ and editing the official Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ New York City TV show that was distributed through ESPN and Fuel TV world wide. With a limited team Justin flexed his multi tasking talents concepting, filming, interviewing, video editing and all post production for both the 3 part web series and 30 minute TV show.

‘ROLL IN’ is a series of fresh daily short films, documenting the sunshine and good times of the 2012 Vans Bowl-a-Rama Bondi supported by Surf Dive & Ski. The Vans Bowl-A-Rama is easily the biggest skateboard event in Australia, attracting thousands of fans and reaching millions in media impressions. Justin worked on providing content for sponsor leveraging and the pre-promotion of the event. Justin produced, shot and edited a series of fresh video’s that captured the lead up, lifestyle and sponsored parties in the week leading up to the main event, titled ‘Roll In’. The Delivery of the project consisted of six x two minute short films that were played on Fuel TV and distributed virally; on the event FB page, sponsor websites, FB pages and athlete pages. The idea of immediacy was in full force with a time frame of 15 hours (shoot to upload), on each video to tell a fresh story that was hot on the pulse of the weeks activities. It captured a moment in time and communicated to both the endemic and non- endemic audience. They weren’t just fluff or generic hype. They communicated a message being television broadcast quality. Justin worked on pre-production (run downs and artwork), creative design and execution (created logo’s, produced openers & animated sequences, filmed and video edited), delivery (thumbnail images, overview text/copy, FTP or vimeo upload)

Lifestyler, snowboarder, skateboarder, Olympian, friend, brother, son, musician…Shaun has an arsenal of titles, all of which play into his dynamic persona. He does it best, by doing it different. “Whatever it is, be yourself.” That’s what Shaun is. Arguably one of the greatest boardsport athletes on planet earth. When visiting Australia for the launch of his signature sunglasses the Holbrooks by Oakley, he dropped by the Bondi Beach Skatepark for a shred. Justin was there to capture all the action and documented this with a series of photographs and video edit. The video was released and to date has over 120,000 plays with Shaun even hosting the video on his own personal site shauwhite.com. You don’t usually associate Australia with world-class skiers, however Russell Henshaw is one of the exceptions. Born in Sydney in 1990, Russell, or ‘Russ’ for short, had his heart set on skiing from an early age. When he was three, he strapped on a pair of skis and set off down the mountain for the first time. When he was still a grom, his parents decided to move to the snowfields of Jindabyne, New South Wales, where Russ could focus on developing his fast-accelerating talent and enter under-12 slalom events. Working for Russ’ major sponsor Red Bull, Justin was given the task of editing a profile piece on the influential Australian skier and in particular the fact that Russ was the first person in the world to land a triple back flip! To Date the video has been watched over 72,000 times...

On a warm Californian day in the year 1990 the Roxy Brand was born. Fashion was finally forged with surfing. It was a new dawn, which set free a new wave of female spirit that would spread to every coastline of the world. And it came to California - home to Hollywood, San Francisco, LA, home to surf, style and the unique spirit that is born from both. Home to Roxy. With California we go back to the birthplace and once again share our spirit with the world. There is no place like home, if your home happens to be California. Justin worked on the ‘Home is where the heart is’ campaign from the beginning, creating the idea and seeing it through ‘creatively’ to the consumer based competition. Using the Roxy retail accounts the promotion showcased holiday locations in California that inspired Roxy’s collection and the different types of holidays one could enjoy in California. Teamed with California tourism the campaign proved to be a huge success running for a total of 5 months and featuring 5 different Californian locations. Justin created all creative assets for the campaign including visual merchandising and window display art direction, designed the marketing guide and competition assets (post cards, entry boxes, brochures, posters, counter cards, staff T-shirts, gondolas, website, facebook page). The campaign came runner up for ladies marketing campaign of the year 2012 at the Australian Surf Industry Awards.

Salt water in your soul, sunshine in your heart—the great blue is always with you. Let it churn you and turn you and remind you of what’s important. Let it connect you to life and lift your heart. Let the sea set you free. Whether it is an hour surf in the morning, a yoga class, a weekend away or a trip to Bali. The ocean revives you. Justin worked on many creative areas of the Roxy, ‘Let the sea set you free’ campaign. From art directing the photoshoot on location in Bali, Indonesia, shooting and editing a behind the scenes edit of the trip, a 3 minute and 60 second brand vibe clip of the models and surfers wearing the product range, 2 profile videos on Roxy team riders, Rosy Hodge & Phillipa Anderson, post production of the photographs for the campaign, art direction and art working for all creative outputs (in-store, P.O.S/windows, banners for website, instore post-cards, & marketing guides) woah! Working directly with the Roxy Australia marketing manager and assistant manager, Justin utilized his full creative skill-set for the brand.

The Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast is host to some of the best male and female surfing talent from across the globe and the first stop on the ASP World Championship Tour. The worldfamous super bank at Snapper Rocks proves every year that it is one of the best waves in the world with fantastic conditions for high-performance competition. Justin worked on the 2011 event editing both the backstage clips during the event and the 27 Minute wrap up of the BEST Event. Featuring the worlds BEST surfers, Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, Tiago Pires, the show was the end wrap up of the event, edited during the 2 week long event and made available for download to the world 24 hours post event, a first EVER for Quiksilver and professional surfing alike.

The Nike ‘Block Series’ celebrates what it means to be local. Surfers are bound by a unique geographical connection to the ocean. The Nike ‘Block Series’ was used to showcase and glorify positive localism, board-rider pride and unique stories from tight-knit surf communities. The Series took place in Spain and France through the summer months with club events at selected surf clubs in the area. Each short film consisted of young talented surfers interviewed to explain what the surf scene is like in that particular area as well as documenting the event produced by Blue Star Revolution for Nike. Justin created ‘The Block Series’ concept and idea around how to bring this video communication to life. As well as the idea behind the short films, Justin worked on both the cinematography and editing of these short films. The video’s were sent out to all surf media and hosted on Nike Surfing facebook page. The series was well received by all with the idea being a first in the surfing world.

The quiet coastal fishing town of Peniche staked its claim as Europe’s ultimate surfing destination during the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Portugal, with the infamous Supertubos cranking into action for three unforgettable days of perfect waves. The ASP’s elite claimed the surf as the best of the year, weaving their way through wavepoollike barrels left and right in the third-to-last contest of the season. For the past 2 years Justin has been the daily photographer on the Rip Curl Pro in Peniche. Working directly with Rip Curl marketing and the event web team Justin provided up to date images of the surfers, the crowds, the waves and the sponsors of the event in Peniche, Portugal. Working under pressure and tight timelines Justin has demonstrated both years that he is able to deliver, fresh, fast and creative photographs that have been eyeballed by many across the globe, hosted on the Rip Curl Pro website as well as being sent out with regular press releases from the Rip Curl marketing team. Post event, Justin’s photographs were used in showcasing the event to the global surf market as well as creative tools for future Rip Curl Pro events.

Rip Curl is a global surf-wear manufacturer. Justin worked with the European marketing and design departments to shoot both the 2011 and 2012 mens winter lifestyle look book catalogues. Shooting the professional team of surfers such as Mick Fanning, Owen Wright, Gabriel Medina, Matt Wilkinson and Dillon Perilo on location in Peniche, Portugal. The photographs from the shoot were used in all communication for the Winter ranges in Europe including, mens sales catalogue, in-store P.O.S, print advertisements & online advertising. Working with the European marketing manager, surf-wear product manager and apparel designers, Justin was given a brief to create images that aligned with the fashion capsule story the brand was striving to achieve. Capsule brief example: Winter Search: This story is our lifestyle capsule with the best winter product inspired by surf and the mountain. We will go on a surf trip with Matt Wilkinson and Dillon Perillo, they will be on a search in the elements looking for waves. We want it to be outdoor inspired using the colours of the location and the beach in contrast with the colours of the product.

In September 2012 Justin worked with the European marketing and women design department to shoot the 2012 winter collection for Rip Curl Europe. The shoot was on location in Peniche, Portugal and Justin worked with a team of make-up artists, hair stylists and stylists as well as Portuguese model Mafalda. The photographs from the shoot were used in all communication for the Winter ranges in Europe including, women’s sales catalogue, in-store P.O.S, print advertisements & online advertising. Working with the European marketing manager, surf-wear product manager and apparel designers, Justin was given a brief to create images that aligned with the fashion capsule story the brand was striving to achieve. The shoot story was based on ‘old surf shack’ and original surfer story.

The Rip Curl European Grom Search series is a 12 stage competition for junior surfers held in four different countries: United Kingdom, France, Portugal and Spain. The winner receiving a place to surf in the global final at Bells Beach, Australia as part of the Rip Curl Pro. The competition is supported by paint pen company POSCA with big presence of the brand at all competitions. Justin worked with Rip Curl and Posca documenting the event with both photographs and a video edit of the French leg of the European tour. In what was a tricky task swapping between both video and still photography to cover the event for the brands. The videos were used on the Grom search website, Rip Curl media channels as well as being sent to global surf media outlets. The photographs were used in press packs to surf media outlets, creative assets for the brands involved and printed up to be shown at a Posca Gallery at the European final in Peniche, Portugal alongside the Rip Curl Pro, Portugal.

Aquabumps, one of Australia’s most iconic photographic galleries and website teamed with Peroni beer to create a two part film series celebrating summer. The first film being shot in the home country of Peroni, Italy. From storyboarding the ideas, writing the creative execution, producing the shoot, directing on location, shooting on DSLR, editing the film and delievering a final product, Justin multi tasked on the project. Capturing the Italian way of life, beach culture and summer vibes of the Italian coast was the object of the film. Meeting with local surfers from the area, traveling ‘pros’ from the Italian surf scene and local surf shop owners, the film brought a broad spectrum of beach going Italians together. And of course ended the sun kissed day with a refreshing Peroni! Working with sound composer Matt Brown, Justin and Matt created a unique piece of music for the film, again inspired by Italy and coastal sounds. The output of the film being released by Aquabumps, with over 80’000 subscribers to the website it had a big debut.

The road trip from the Sydney to the Gold coast takes a route along the east coast of Australia that is an institution for any surfer. The 1000km stretch of coast houses not only Australia’s, but some of the worlds best beach breaks... It’s also dotted with a handful of world class point breaks. National Highway Number 1 - It doesn’t disappoint from it’s name and is rated Australia’s top tourism drive. It has beautiful scenery with iconic landmarks, long roads, colorful locals and empty beaches. A surf adventurers dream. Land Rover in Australia is a major supporter of the surf industry and beach lifestyle, sponsoring the Quiksilver Pro, the first stop on the Association of Surfing professionals calendar and also sponsor of Bondi Beach photographer Eugene Tan from Aquabumps. In a collaboration between both Aquabumps and Land Rover Justin worked on the film ‘Road to the Pro’ documenting Eugene Tan and pro surfers Chris Friend, Blake Thornton and Pama Davies traveling from Sydney to the Gold Coast in a Land Rover to the Quiksilver Pro. Justin Produced storyboards, did all art direction, produced the film, sourced all music, filmed on the trip, edited the film and delieverd a final product.

The Journey continues.... The tag line to the video edit that Justin created for Aquabumps presented by Land Rover. The trip to New Zealand with Aquabumps and Land Rover was the first project Justin worked on for the brands. Combining scenic footage of the north island of New Zealand, branded content inclusions of Land Rover vehicles and the story of Eugene Tan (Photographer from Aquabumps) alongside Luke Kennedy (tracks surfing magazine editor) and New Zealand’s legendary pro surfer Maz Quin chasing waves throughout the island. Alongside the adventure clip Justin edited a secondary clip that profiles Eugene Tan and his experiences shooting the beauty of New Zealand. Delivering two pieces of branded content to be seeded through the various surf, travel, lifestyle and photographic communities. Justin’s role in the project consisted of directing, video editing, art direction and selecting and scoring the music.

Huckle the Barber recently launched in London’s east and has fast become the hip new spot for London men to get their hair cut. Chris Ward, the founder of Huckle approached Justin to create a short film to promote the brand and share a little information about him, the founder of the barber shop to the world. Justin spent a day with Chris, haunting the east of London, documenting his daily routine, a few hair cuts and a big interview session. Justin acted as a predator on the shoot, directing, shooting, post production and editing. The video has been seen by many in the barber and London scene, housed on many exclusive sites like ‘Seven’ by Shoreditch house and the blog ‘Londoners’ about key people in the London scene.


ARNETTE - BIG FUN CAMPAIGN

Arnette is a global eyewear company that specializes in the actions sports. Born out of the trunk of a rental car in the San Clemente surf ghetto the brand helped shape the early days of action sports & the lifestyle of its brotherhood. With a large team of surfers, skateboarders, snow boarders, wakeboarders and motorcross riders there are some big names that ride for the brand. Justin worked with ARntette on their campaign titled ‘Big Fun’. It was based on capturing a moment of the professional athletes personality & in this case with Otis Carey, Professional surfer. The idea wanted something that took him out of the water and away from surfing. Keeping it really light hearted and fun times the idea was based around Otis’ love of backyard tattooing. Justin shot the photographic campaign with Otis in the back streets of Bondi in a grimy alley way, he used a home tattoo set and had a trusting victim… The tattoo actually happened! The photographs appeared in print and web ads for Arnette.

Working for Channel [v] and Where there’s smoke production company Justin photographed the Campaign shots of Channel [v]’s presenters as well as the behind the scenes shots of the Ident spots for Channel [v]’s campaign “We are [v]’ In a smoke filled, surreally lit warehouse a psychedelic world of imagination exists. A world ruled by the freedom to dream, a dark escape to the unbounded realm of music. We are [v] “Music Therapy” Channel [v] Australia’s 2010 Ident campaign and channel re-brand. We hope you enjoy. Justin’s photographed were used in print advertisements in magazines such as Rolling Stone and as campaign shots for Channel [v] through various forms of media including online and outdoor. The press photographs of the Channel [v] presenters were used for all media responsibilities during the ‘We are [v]’ campaign.

Tony Hawk is one of the best skateboarders to ever walk this earth, he is widely considered to be one of the most successful and influential pioneers of modern vertical skateboarding. While Tony was in Sydney during the ‘Big Day Out’ tour he made a stop at the world famous Bondi Beach Skatepark pool. Justin was there to document all the action taking Photographs of Tony in action in the pool and editing the clip ‘Tony Hawk in Black and White at Bondi Beach’. The Clip being picked up by the Australian National Newspaper as well as many skateboard and boardsport inspired blogs and websites. The video featured on the homepage of the Australian newspaper with an estimated audience of over a million views. The edit and photographs were a trending topic during Tony’s visit in Australia and the turn around of creative from being shot to edit to release was under 24 hours. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

Defining the essence of Australia’s skateboard culture, TIC TACO was originally a solo photographic exhibition by Justin Barnwell documenting the Bondi Beach bowl and previous Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ skateboard competitions. Tic Taco has grown over the past 4 years from a grass roots skateboarding photographic exhibition documenting Bondi’s Bowl-A-Rama into the official opening event kick-starting the week of festivities of the Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™. It has taken place at Beach Burrito, Bondi Beach and this year (2013) saw a new face of the exhibition with a group art show of grand scale including illustrators, fine artists, street artists and photographers all submitting work under the ‘Exploration of Australian Skateboarding’ title.

Justin’s role in the Camera Club was many, from idea creation, creating the brand’s identity and assets, creative direction, leading a design team, graphic design, curating the shows and documenting the events. The Camera Club is a community minded bar & gallery concept that’s dedicated to celebrating creativity through camera-based pursuits. The Camera Club is based within the Beach Road Hotel, Bondi Beach and is proudly supported by 42-Below vodka. The Camera Club’s photo gallery delivers quarterly group exhibitions that are powered by the idea of ‘six degrees of separation’ and presented under a zero percent commission. Every 3-months a curator is engaged to create a group show concept. In addition to theming the show they also select a photographer to participate & exhibit. This second photographer supplies their works and then selects another photographer to exhibit and so the process continues until there is a total of 10 exhibiting photographers. The end result is 10 micro galleries each of which is connected via the group show theme and the exhibiting photographers via six degrees of separation. Welcome to ‘Uno Momento’ we hope you enjoy your stay… After countless surf/skate/snow/ music clips with , (don’t get me wrong) awesome shredding with pumping music, Justin often wanted more. MORE. Who are these people? What are they thinking? What is a normal day for them? I know they rip but I wanna chat! The concept is based on spending at least one day with them, 24 hours, a surf, a skate, a snowboard, or a god damn funky jam, it doesn’t really matter and that will all depend on the character themselves… Justin created ‘Uno Momento’ to find unique individuals with stories to tell, yarns to share and good times to be had… First up, Bondi surfer Otis Carey. Many have said this helped Otis launch his professional surf career with widespread internet viewership. Over 55,000 loads on vimeo and hosted on many surf publications, brands and personal blogs. Justin directed, shot, edited and scored the music for the film as well as sent out the media and press release to the online surf community.
