AIR RIGHTS ARCHITECTURE

LOCATION: Lincoln, Nebraska - Block South of O Street, between 9th and 10th Street. REQUIREMENTS: For this semester long project we worked in teams of two to design an air rights building in Downtown Lincoln B-4 zoning district. We were required to design a mixed-use building, including residential and a program of our choice. In addition, we were required to produce a set of construction documents detailing our project and its systems. DESIGN CONCEPTS: One of the main driving concepts for this project was to create a middle tier of buildings to mediate the height difference between the northeast and southwest corners of the site, while still leaving open space on the site for the opportunity of future densification. The additional programs we chose for our building were a cafe leading up to a jazz/swing dance hall and a retail space, with residential program connecting the building on the top two levels.

MOVILLE MEDICAL CENTER

LOCATION: Moville, Iowa - Iowa State Highway 140, entrance to town. REQUIREMENTS: This studio was a semester long interdisciplinary studio that included both interior design and architecture students. For this semester long project we worked in groups of two to design a hospital based on a detailed program provided for us. We were also given the ability to choose the city in which we wanted to design, and to modify the program based on the individual needs of that community. DESIGN CONCEPTS: The goal for our hospital was to serve the rural community of Woodbury County, Iowa by becoming a medical hub for those people outside of Sioux City. Because of this we put a large focus on emergency and physical therapy programs. In order to create efficiency for workers and to make the building accessible to the community as a whole we focused the program around a centralized circulation core keeping public and check-in programs closer, while moving private treatment further away.

REQUIREMENTS: For this studio we were charged with locating and designing a new building for the Munroe Meyer Institute on the University of Nebraska Medical Center Campus. We were able to work closely with the client as we chose sites and individually designed the building. Interior design students joined us for the last four weeks to aid us in the completion of our design.

DESIGN CONCEPTS: MMI provides therapy services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. For this reason the building kept all the therapy programs on the first two levels for easy public access. Additionally, programs were arranged around two main corridors with all waiting rooms and clinics directly adjacent to provide easy way finding for patients and flexibility for staff to practice interdisciplinarily.

PARQUE LA ALBORADA ENTRANCE

LOCATION: Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands - Alborada Park. REQUIREMENTS: This individual project was designed on a three-week summer study abroad trip to the Galapagos Islands. The existing Alborada Park was master planned by a previous group of UNL students to become a park focused on art and cultural expression. Our group was assigned to design certain elements within the master plan. These plans were given to the local people upon our departure for them to execute in the future. DESIGN CONCEPTS: I was assigned to design a stage at the east entrance of the park. However, upon further analysis of the site, the need was discovered for a structure which would visually terminate the east street, and advertise the presence of the park below. The structure was designed to shade and encourage visitors to linger at the top of the park. Additionally studies were done to find the optimum height of the proposed stage per requests of the clients.

TAINJIN MASTER PLAN

LOCATION: Tainjin, China. REQUIREMENTS: A team of six students worked together for half a semester to program and master plan this site. Program was chosen to support a sustainable and diverse community of displaced rural Chinese, urban Chinese, and visitors to the attractions around the site. Square footage of program was determined based on a FAR of two. DESIGN CONCEPTS: In order to create a vibrant and sustainable community for the diverse users of the site we focused the program around three main plazas. These plazas were programed to provide entertainment, shopping, and social environments for all users of the site, both resident and non-resident. Additionally, street-scapes and pavements were chosen to cater to the pedestrian, and allow water permeability. Other environmentally sustainable elements such as photovoltaic panels, urban agriculture, and waste processing were included in the master plan.

TAINJIN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

LOCATION: Tainjin, China. REQUIREMENTS: After master planning the site, the second half of the semester consisted each group member individually designing a segment of the master plan. The section I designed included the main market plaza, commercial retail, and low income housing programs. DESIGN CONCEPTS: This project looked at the relationships between the transitory user and permanent resident. First building footprints were angled to encourage flow into the public market rather than into the private side of the development. Additionally private courtyards were created at the edge of the site to balance the large public market. This created a progression of thresholds in which the permanent resident moves from the public plaza, to the private courtyard, into their dedicated stair core, and finally into their personal unit; a concept that is consistent with Chinese culture.
