Owl’s ability to operate after dark sets them apart from other birds. It’s their nocturnal lifestyle that intrigued man all these years. Less than 3% of the world’s birds are nocturnal, which most of is owls. With their acute sight, ability to fly slowly and silently and fine hearing they are a success in pursuing a low-light existence. Night Eyes Owl’s most astonishing feature is their enormous eyes. Combine that with their forward looking faces and you have a bird with a very human looking head. Owl’s eyes are tubular in shape, not spherical like those of a human, minimizing their weight. This factor is a critical one for birds. It also counts towards reducing the owl’s field of view. This concludes the reason why they have unusual front-facing placement of their eyes. Binocular vision can be achieved with this feat. They swirl their necks in different directions rather than their eyes because of their restricted angle of vision. They can rotate their heads through 270° to 360° compared to our 180°. A mechanism owls have perfected for enhancing their three-dimensional view is achieved by their comical habit of bobbing and swaying their heads when focusing on an object. Just a little bit inferior to a cat’s, their visual capabilities in poor light are a few times better than ours and much better than a diurnal bird’s. Better than humans, owls can cope allot better in darkness. The way a human can see in full moonlight an owl can see in starlight.
