01 The Annuciation

Historical Site Re-development Individual Design Project, Fall 2023 Benedictine Monastry Instrautor: / Site: Château de La tourette

The Project recalls Fra Angelico's Annunciation in both form and concept. The project can be deconstructed into a series of spatial binaries. The foreground, where the Annunciation metaphorically unfolds, juxtaposes with the cloister in the middle ground, further contrasted against the natural landscape in the background. The interplay of light and dark spaces within these areas articulates a narrative depth, imbued with spiritual underpinnings. The wall also serves as a part of the monastery's cemetery, Woven into the fabric of the building is the monastery’s cemetery, a decision steeped in the Benedictine tradition of blending ritual with the rhythm of the environment. Here, architecture and ethos unite, embodying the Benedictine precept of ora et labora. This confluence of life, death, and devotion captures the full spectrum of existence, offering a space where the cycle from life to eternal repose is intimately observed. Nestled beside Le Corbusier's La Tourette, the convent project absorbs the essence of its renowned neighbor while embracing its unique identity. Perched similarly on a hilltop, it echoes the Acropolis in its command of the landscape. This strategic positioning allows for an interplay of perspectives and light, akin to the ancient Greek sanctuary. The convent, like La Tourette, becomes a modern citadel of spirituality and contemplation, its architecture a dialogue between historical reverence and contemporary expression.

02 Upwards/Downwards Thermal Bath in Quarry

ARC407, Florance Program Design Studio, Spring 2022 Thermal Bath In Poggio Mosconcino Instrautor: Luca Ponsi Site: Bagno Roselle, Grosetto, Tuscany Team: Junjie Wang, Lannie Lan Design & Production: The project is design collaborativly, I mainly focus on the site research, concept establishment, plan design and Perpective. All drawings below is done by me.

In our research on the land reclaimation process in Tuscany, Italy, we found that whether it is high-rise mass housing or farm house piano nobile, upward construction has always been an eternal topic. And the history of the area is buried deep underground, subject to gravity. Caught between the "downwardness" of history and the "upward construction" of mankind, the project will celebrate the divinity of space, materials, light and water itself. Located in an abandoned quarry in Roselle, Italy, the site bears witness to nature’s ruthless reclamation of space. As human activity wanes, flora and fauna flourish, and remnants of industrial activity come alive again. This rewilding is not only noticed, but celebrated. The architecture consciously surrenders to the overwhelming presence of nature. The buildings are hidden underground or nestled within the craggy walls of the quarry. This approach serves the dual purpose of retaining the visual pristine feel of the quarry landscape while providing an unobtrusive human footprint. The architecture became an exercise in minimalism and restraint, allowing the quarry’s inherent desolation, decay and cruelty of its previous life to tell the visual story. And through the language of architecture, natural elements that touch the senses, such as the reflection of light, the flow of water, and the diffusion of fog, are brought into the building.

Human has always harbored a longing for upward construction, an antigravity of sorts. The ability to break free from the 'downward pull' of gravity has been a defining line between the superhuman and the human. This pursuit began with the Primitive Hut, marking the start of our upward endeavors. From the religious metaphors in Gothic architecture to the skyscrapers that rise from the ground, and even rockets soaring into outer space, this represents a Promethean achievement. Humans have taken into their own hands what was once deemed superhuman—transcending the shackles of gravity. Beneath this upward surge lies history, buried under the earth's surface. Under the influence of gravity, abstract time becomes tangible. Trilobites have transformed into oil, flowing within the rock layers; the grandeur of the ancient Roman Empire is fixed five meters below the road's surface. Gravity, with its irresistible authority, anchors history, time, and even consciousness.

03 Rainforest Memorial

Soun Commemorating Landscape ARC208, Landscape Studio, Spring 2021 Water-level Monitor Outpost Instrautor: Yutaka Sho Site: 1 Old Billingsgate Walk, Madagascar Team: Junjie Wang, Zhuofan Design & Production: Deforestation research is done collaborativly, The design is individual project. All drawnings below is done by me.

Given the alarming forecast that the rainforest may vanish by 2080, we've embarked on a mission to capture its unique voices before they're lost forever. Central to this soundscape is the vocal species native to Madagascar's rainforest—the lemur. These highly social creatures epitomize the rainforest's rich ecosystem. With the potential extinction of lemurs, preserving their sounds becomes a poignant way to honor both their spirit and that of the rainforest. This auditory legacy, showcasing the mesmerizing calls of the lemurs, will not only enchant listeners but also commemorate the losses caused by deforestation. The Project features a 50-feet hight timber and amboo sturcutre, both serving for a shortcut for lemurs to reach water and a facilitate for researchers archive the sound of lemurs and Madagascar rainforest. The space will become an exhibition of the sound they archived after the disappear of the rainforest, moaning for the "ghost" of lemurs and rainforest.

04 Water/Society Narcissism

Water-level Monitor/Archive Outpost ARC408, London Program Design Studio, Fall 2022 Water-level Monitor Outpost Instrautor: Amber Bartosh, Vanessa Lastrucci Site: Old Billingsgate Fish Market, London Team: Junjie Wang, Lannie Lan, Eleanor Sedor Design & Production: The prject is designed collaborativly. I mainly focus on the site research, design of tidal pool, mudlarking, section and axon drawing. All drawings below is done by me

Throughout an extensive history that traces its origins to the Roman Empire, the Thames River has persistently constituted an indispensable facet of the city's identity. London, in its contemporary manifestation, owes a profound debt to the River Thames; it would not have achieved its present stature without it. This "Flowing history," is intricately predicated upon the inherent qualities of fluidity, water, and exchangeability, permeating the entirety of spatial domains within human perceptual capacity. This concept extends beyond mere symbolism, encompassing the structural and organizational tenets of human societies, akin to a waterbody system. The project undertakes an exhaustive exploration of myriad facets of tidal mobility, diligently archiving water levels, and offering visitors an immersive and palpable experience of rising sea levels. Consequently, the project extends a compelling invitation to viewers, beseeching them to partake in a profound expedition through the ever-fluid landscapes of memory, where the city, water, and society harmoniously converge, seamlessly intertwining past, present, and future within the construct of architectural innovation.
