The village of Hinsdale lies within Cook and DuPage counties. County government provides a number of functions of importance to Hinsdale residents. County governments are responsible for tax assessment and collection, the court system, the clerk and recorder, highways, forest preserves, public health services, and elections.

The Cook County Board is the governing body of Cook County and consists of a president and 17 members, one from each of the county board districts.

AUTOMOBILE INFORMATION Certificate of title: All vehicles operated within the state must have a certificate of title. Failure to obtain the certificate will result in a denial of registration by the Illinois Secretary of State.

Drivers license: New residents of the state of Illinois have 90 days to acquire an Illinois drivers license. Further information may be obtained at the local Secretary of State’s office at Eastgate Shopping Plaza, 837 S. Westmore Avenue, Lombard. Call 630-629-0380. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays; closed Sundays and Mondays.

License plates: License plates, which include registration with the state, are required for all vehicles. Plates are for five years with changeable stickers for each year. For more information, call the Secretary of State’s office at 312-793-1010.

UTILITIES Electricity: ComEd provides service based on a 30-day billing period. A nominal deposit sometimes is required. Call the Chicago office at 800-334-7661 or visitcomed.com.
