Land mines abound for potential professional actors BY EMILY SPECTRE

H

ave you ever wondered how to become a professional actor? Take it from Carole Dibo, founder and director of the Actors Training Center (ATC) at the Wilmette Theatre: the entertainment industry is full of land mines for an aspiring actor who doesn’t understand the business. That is why 12 years ago Dibo started the one-day workshop called Breaking Into The Business. Relying on over 30 years’ experience in the field, Dibo shares her own advice and also moderates a panel of industry experts. “What you don’t want to do is make costly mistakes along the way,” Dibo said. According to her, many aspiring actors and well-intended parents are duped by costly classes, agents and others looking to take advantage of unsuspecting novices who desire to break into show business. By offering the workshop, Dibo’s goal is to provide straight answers for the

person who knows nothing about the industry. Relying on her connections in the field, Dibo put together a panel of experts from agents and casting directors, to working actors who once were students at ATC. She looks for approachable people who are willing to share their knowledge. But Dibo finds that while most agents want aspiring actors to understand how the industry works, they are usually just too pressed for time to share that knowledge. During the workshop, Dibo asks the panel carefully crafted questions that cover such topics as how to get an agent, what type of work an actor should pursue and what casting directors look for in an actor. She wants to answer those questions would-be actors wouldn’t even know to ask. It’s about “inside secrets you wouldn’t think about,” she said. After the panel discussion, Dido opens up the floor for questions by the audience. Continues on page 12

LOOKING TO SAVE FACE(S) A portrait beloved by former Mayor Daley searches for a home BY BILL MCLEAN

T

he lithograph of four expressions of former Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley rests in a home in Wilmette. For now. How it got there — why it was produced, actually — is rooted in an ornery aide of the longtime Democratic mayor, a crestfallen, scrambling artist and a man of the cloth who votes … Republican. The Rev. Richard Dalton, an Anglican priest from Rochester, Mich., and his wife, Theresa, have four daughters. One of them, Elisabeth, lives in the North Shore home with the reproduction of the oil painting, created by Diana NevilleKnowles in 1975 and presented to an awestruck, teary-eyed Daley in a ceremony held at City Hall. Elisabeth and her father, a former Wilmette resident, believe it belongs elsewhere. “My dad [the late Robert G. Dalton] bought it in the mid1970s, but I’m not exactly sure why,” Fr. Dalton, 64, says. “He never hung it on a wall. He collected portraits of U.S. Presidents, all of them painted by Diana, and he hung those. I have 10 of them; they’re in my home

in Michigan. Dad loved Diana’s work. “I like the image of Daley at the bottom, the one where he is kind of smirking, with a twinkle in his eye … his Irish eye. You look at him, you think of Chicago, don’t you? You don’t think of Michigan, and you don’t think of Wilmette.

“It needs to find a home, a proper home, in Chicago.” The portrait’s artist is living in Bigfork, Mont., tickled somebody is devoting time to relocate a lithograph of one of her 20,000-plus pieces of artwork. Her subjects also include Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Johnny Carson, Jackie Robinson and

Jack Nicklaus. Her portrait of former first lady Pat Nixon hangs in the Smithsonian. The Variety Club had commissioned Neville-Knowles to create the Daley oil painting. She needed 18 months to complete it, sometimes working up to Continues on page 12

Farmers markets are plentiful on North Shore BY EMILY SPECTRE

F

inding locally grown produce gets a lot easier during the summer thanks to the bounty of farmers markets on the North Shore. Almost every suburb boasts its own farmers market, with vendors

offering fresh local produce, plants and flowers, cheese, baked goods and even hand-crafted items. Some markets offer live entertainment such as the Glenview market located across from Wagner Farm, or Highwood’s Evening Market. Others have a long history, selling organic and local produce before Whole Foods made

it popular. The Ravinia Farmers Market in Highland Park is celebrating 36 years, while Lake Bluff started its farmers market 22 years ago. And there are (almost) enough farmers markets on the North Shore to fill the week. Check what is offered this summer:

ARCHITECT GETS HIS DUE IN VALUABLE BOOK

David Sweet

hen longtime North Shore resident Stuart Cohen finally visited Lake Forest, the short suburban trip served as an introduction to the work of Howard Van Doren Shaw. It was an eye-opener. “When I finally saw Market Square, it was a revelation, a small jewel that epitomized for me what urban design should be,” writes Cohen in “Inventing the New American House: Howard Van Doren Shaw, Architect,” a new coffee-table book published by The Monacelli Press. The work itself will be a revelation to those with little knowledge of Shaw, whose death at 57 was national news. I had no idea, until I turned the pages, that I grew up across from one of Shaw’s brilliant creations, Havenwood II, built for Edward Larned Ryerson Sr. In my day, it was a monastery, home for the Franciscan Fathers in Lake Forest. I toured the mansion once for a school report and at other times remember strolling the beautiful grass paths (uninvited), admiring

the pavilions that adorned the property and even searching for empty beer cans for my incipient collection until the wrecking ball knocked most of the estate down in favor of single-family homes. Among other titans, Shaw built homes for printer Reuben H. Donnelley, newspaper publisher Joseph Medill Patterson and Gustavas Franklin Swift Jr. of the meatpacking dynasty. He may be best known for the home where he lived, now the artists’ retreat Ragdale in Lake Forest, whose picture graces Cohen’s cover. Why write a book now about the architect, who passed away nearly 90 years ago? “Shaw was one of the most original and inventive architects of his day,” says Cohen, himself an architect of renown in the area who once worked in New York for Richard Meier and for the late Philip Johnson. “His work was comfortable and livable while considered modern by his contemporaries. I wanted a larger audience of architects and historians to appreciate his

work.” Cohen notes the biggest challenge in creating the 248-page book was the lack of Shaw’s office records or a complete list of his commissions. Still, he compiles an impressive display of Shaw’s houses with compelling color and black-andwhite photography, much of it previously unpublished. Asked to name his favorite work of the architect’s, Cohen points to the McBirney house, known as the “House of the Four Winds” and built in 1908 in Lake Forest on Laurel Avenue. “I love the interior layout, which connects all the main rooms along the length of the house to the garden which was designed by Shaw as a series of outdoor rooms extending the interior space of the house to the outside,” he says. In an event sponsored by the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society, Cohen will sign books and talk about Shaw at the Gorton Community Center on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. For those captivated by architecture, history or a

fascinating life, it will no doubt be worth attending. Enjoy the weekend.

Dibo believes this workshop is different than most because she brings together a panel of experts who work in the profession. For example, Katie Chang will be there speaking about her experience in the industry, having started as an ATC student when she was only 13 years old and growing up in Winnetka. While a student at New Trier High School, Chang’s career took off when she landed the role as Rebecca Ahn in Sofia Coppola’s movie The Bling Ring. Chang, who is now a sophomore at Northwestern University, was happy to return to ATC to share advice. “I like to stay as involved as possible. ATC was a place I felt completely nurtured. It is where I started,” Chang said. Chang continues to take classes at ATC whenever she can, following her guiding philosophy to continue her training.

eight hours a day. Months after the presentation of the original in the ceremony at City Hall, Neville-Knowles sought to borrow it for one of her showings at a gallery in the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort. “Here’s where it starts to get interesting,” Neville-Knowles recalls. “Really interesting.” An aide to the mayor rebuffed her request, saying, “You can’t have that!” The same aide had provided photographs of Daley to Neville-Knowles. The powerful mayor of a major city did not have time to pose and display four expressions for hours on end. “It broke my heart when I was turned down,” NevilleKnowles says. “I had invited 300 people [to the showing; nearly 400 would show up]. I certainly wanted the Daley painting to be a part of it. I knew of a company in California that did lithographs, so I took a picture of the painting and had it delivered to the company overnight.” The company produced the lithograph at a cost of $125. It would arrive on time for the showing.

According to Chang, she learned early on at ATC that the entertainment industry is full of rejection. But instead of viewing rejection as a failure, Chang was taught to view it as a learning experience. She always asks, what can I do better at the next audition? Breaking Into The Business will be held at the Actors Training Center on Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and is open to seventh graders to adults. out and bought a car. It was a Chevrolet Club Coupe, an ugly two-tone green car, and sure enough the exact same car pulls up along side me and there’s See driving the same damn car.” Throughout those years, the two regularly played rounds of golf and tennis and took vacations together with their wives and families. “I just could not get rid of him,” jokes Weiner. The two first joined Wescott as part of the “Adopt A Grandparent” pilot program in 1995, started by retired Wescott teacher Sue Smilie and championed today by current Principal Chris Brown, who said that “seniors have great patience with the children and are generous in sharing their talents, life experiences, and their hearts.” “The kids always say ‘thank you for coming,’ and I say thank you to them because when I leave here they do more for me than I do for them,” said Weiner. “They make me feel alive.”

About 90 minutes before the start of the showing, a limo stopped near the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort entrance. Three armed guards spilled out of the vehicle. They carefully transported the oil painting to the resort’s gallery. Eyes of art enthusiasts got a good look at the original. Two of them belonged to Robert G. Dalton, owner of an office equipment company. “He was a magnificent man,” Neville-Knowles says. Fr. Dalton’s father bought the lithograph from NevilleKnowles. Robert Dalton died in 1986, 10 years after the death of Richard J. Daley. Fr. Dalton inherited it and, years later, gave the lithograph to his daughter Elisabeth’s father-inlaw, who had a connection to Chicago. It later got stored in a garage at a home in a western suburb of Chicago. Elisabeth’s mother-in-law cleaned out that garage one day and returned the piece of artwork, now slightly damaged, to the Dalton family. Not too long ago Elisabeth received it, a gift that keeps on … changing hands. Elisabeth, a former Glenview resident, called her father up in Michigan and asked,

CAROLE DIBO

“What should I do with it?” A project was born. Fr. Dalton accepted it, embraced it, went to work on it. He visits the North Shore about six times a year. “I thought it would be fun, trying to find a home for it,” says Dalton, who lived in Wilmette for three years as a youth and attended Howard Junior High School, which closed in 1979. “I have called the Chicago History Museum. I would like to see it hanging in a library in Chicago or maybe in a restaurant [the mayor had frequented] in the city. He was the mayor for so many years [21]. He was a Chicago icon. The name, Daley … that’s iconic. I want other people, a lot of people, to see the lithograph and enjoy it. That would be fantastic. “I don’t want it to end up staying in a closet forever.” And the original painting? It moved from City Hall after the mayor’s death in 1976 to his widow’s home. She died in 2003, and no one seems to be sure where it ended up. Do you know of a fitting destination for the Richard J. Daley lithograph? If so, please contact Fr. Dalton at fatherdalton@gmail.com.

Life Down Under is messy but continuing BY EMILY SPECTRE

T

he Friends of the Wilmette Public Library’s bookstore, The Books Down Under, has managed the almost herculean task of staying open during the construction at the library. The store is currently the only bookstore in Wilmette and is aptly named for its location on the lower level of the library where substantial construction is taking place. Books Down Under is run entirely by volunteer staff, many of whom have worked at the store since its early days. “Many shift workers have worked for decades and come in faithfully every week,” said Heather Hehman, who just stepped down as President of Friends. The store is primarily stocked with books donated by the community and some books decommissioned by the library. As evidenced by the library itself, Wilmette is a community that reads — a whole lot — and as a result

over the years Books Down Under collected quite a few books that were stored in the library’s basement and then sold at the store. In the fall, when the volunteers learned that the library was undertaking a construction project that included extensive work on the library’s lower level, they realized much of their storage needed to be moved. “That was a huge job because of the number of books you can easily accumulate over the years,” Hehman said. The volunteers worked hard to sort through the books, deciding which ones to sell at the store, put in off-site storage, or donate to charity. Most of the books in storage are valuable books or books for special occasions. The bookstore sells specialized books throughout the year on such holidays as Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas. It also has a small collectible collection that is housed in a locked case in the store. Typically, when books

are donated volunteers sort through the books organizing them by topic, earmarking books for charity and pricing the books for sale. At peak donation times, the bookstore can receive two to three giant bins of books per day, noted Hehman. The store lost its sorting area to the construction project and so volunteers partitioned a portion of the bookstore to continue to sort books. While the store has a moratorium on book donations from the community until construction is complete, it still receives decommissioned books from the library that need to be sorted. And if all of these changes weren’t enough, the bookstore’s long-time and beloved manager for 30 years Marion Anderson decided to retire once she managed all the necessary changes to keep the store open during construction. Anderson worked tirelessly as manager, often averaging 20 hours per week.

PREVIEW Highland Park

The Highland Park Historical Society will host “Starving the South: How the

North Won the Civil War,’ presented by Andrew F. Smith, on Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at the Highland Park Library. From the first shot fired at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, to the last shot fired, food played a crucial role in the Civil War. The North mobilized its agricultural resources; the South did not. As a result, the North fed its civilians and military, and still had massive amounts of food to export to Europe, while the South starved, morale tanked, and desertions increased. For further information, please contact the Highland Park Historical Society: 847.432.7090 or hphistorical@sbcglobal.net Admission is free.

OUT & ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

What are your summer plans?

Musings by Mike Lubow

ack in the days before cell phones, there was a man in his 60s recovering from a series of heart attacks. He had a secret spot in the woods of Highland Park where he’d sit alone and commune with nature. No one knew where it was — even his wife. You’d want to ask him: You’re all alone in there. What if you need 911? He’d shrug off your question with a patient smile. He’d been a boxing champ, survived Marine combat missions, and was a self-made businessman. He didn’t fear fear. So he went to his secret spot to enjoy solitude and the natural peace found in wilderness. The North Shore is a great place for such secret spots. Forest preserves are common. There’s the Green Bay Trail, the Skokie Lagoons in Win-

netka, wooded ravines along the bluffs and beaches. The Chicago Botanic Garden, Ryerson Woods. Yeah, you can find a secret spot. And, today you’d have an advantage that the old guy with the iffy heart didn’t. You can take a cell phone, so you’re never cut off. Still, as the world gets better, it also gets worse. There may be cell phones, but our woods now have ticks that could carry Lyme disease and mosquitoes that could carry the West Nile virus. The old guy lived into his 80s, enjoying his secret spot for years. He never had a cell phone, Lyme disease or West Nile. And he never worried about having them either. All he did was go each day to a quiet place in the woods where he could sit without company and, true to his nature, without fears.

yOur hOme’s ‘resume’ Yes, you’re on MLS, your agent’s website and her company’s website, too. You’ve been added to the virtual tour and there’s been an Agent Open House. What comes next? Your home’s ‘resume.’ Just inside the foyer on that credenza you’ve cleared off and polished to a high shine, there can be a beautiful folder with all the information of your home on it, enough for everyone who visits to take with them and consider at their leisure. Essentials in this package? Photos to reinforce what they know – the rooms are perfect for them. Statistics – Numbers to reinforce what the photos tell them. Bedrooms/Baths, square footage, the types of flooring in each room. Schools and local information.

ROBBYN AND COOPER RATSKOFF, HIGHLAND PARK Robbyn: Adventures and festivals! Cooper: Playing golf.

Amenities – What they did and didn’t see. The Jacuzzi, the heated floors. You may know all the statistics and amenities by heart but remember—the buyer doesn’t. They have seen it on the virtual tour, but they’ve been looking at house after house after house and as outstanding as yours is, the information is going to begin to blend together. With a portfolio of your house in their hands, buyers will remember it well!

NORTH SHORE FOODIE BAKERY IS GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD BY SIMON MURRAY

W

alking out of the Metra station, I followed my nose down Dempster Street and there it was: the Evanstonbased artisan bakery that specializes in hand-forged bread, in all of its yeast-filled, flourstained glory. The art of bread making — for it is indeed an art — is an ancient craft. There’s little doubt that bread is one of, if not the oldest, artificial foodstuff. Empires have been built on it — or fallen apart amid its crumbs. Leavened or unleavened, matzo or the Eucharist, bread is the edible building blocks of religions. So important is bread, and the wheat- and flour-based paste that it comes from, that it has become synonymous with money. While bakers have been shaping nebulous mush with their hands for millennia,

only recently — say, the past couple centuries or so — have we left the formation of dough to manufacturers. Not Ellen King and Julie Matthei. The co-owners of Hewn, who are celebrating their two-year anniversary this month, met as parents of kids attending the Chiaravalle Montessori School down the street. King, a classically trained chef, had moved from Seattle and was missing the artisan bread of the West Coast. She had been experimenting a little with bread making before moving to the Midwest, but once here, that hobby became a full-blown passion. It would lead her to establish the Underground Bread Club — kind of like Fight Club meets Julia Child — an invite-only, group de résistance à pain. That’s where she met Matthei who, after trying a loaf made from scratch, convinced her to open up a bakery.

Hewn co-owners Julie Matthei and Ellen King. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER

“The name Hewn to me always meant like something artisan, very much a labor of love, and something that is unique,” says King, who adds she got the idea from a project she worked on while attending the Univer-

sity of Maine. While working on establishing dates for areas of a centuries-old house, “we would peel back the layers and find hand-hewn beams”— that were cut before a circular saw was invented —“then we knew that this addition was [constructed] in the 1830s.” King’s coffee cakes are an extension of the Hewn ethos: local and seasonal ingredients, everything from scratch. Each loaf is baked fresh every day (the rustic, traditional coffee cake — handmade in front of us — being one of them). “With summer coming, you can change up the [coffee cake’s] filling with whatever fruit you want,” notes King. “So it’s kind of fun, because it’s like whatever looks good at the Farmers Market, you can make your own little compote. Look at it as [being] so American you can create a hodgepodge and it will just sort of work out.”

Hewn’s Tart Cherry Sourdough Coffee Cake TOTAL TIME: 1 hour SERVES: 8-10 Hewn’s Frozen Tart Cherry Filling 2 cups tart cherries (or your favorite berry) ½ cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon corn starch 1 teaspoon vanilla 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Make the filing. Bring cherries to boil and reduce heat. 2. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes 3. Add lemon juice. 4. Mix sugar and corn starch together. 5. Add sugar mix and cook and stir on low for 5 minutes. 6. Cool the filing. Hewn’s Tart Cherry Sourdough Coffee Cake 1 ½ cup AP flour ¼ cup sugar ½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 stick unsalted butter ½ cup starter 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ cup buttermilk ½ cup steel cut rolled oats ¼ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup almonds or walnuts, chopped 1. Mix dry ingredients. 2. Cut in butter. 3. Mix starter, egg, buttermilk, and vanilla and slowly add to dry ingredients. 4. Spray a pan and spread ½ batter on the bottom of the pan and layer with cherry filing. 5. Add the rest of the dough in little dollops on top of the cherry filling. 6. Mix the oats, brown sugar, nuts, and salt in separate bowl and sprinkle over the top. 7. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes, check to see if it’s done, and cook an additional 5 to 10 minutes if not.

REIGNING SUPREME Frei’s fantastic game rules as Trevians successfully defend their Class 3A state title

BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

T

he soccer ball left Celia Frei’s right foot, curling and curling and curling toward the northwest corner of a goal. The path of the ball in the Class 3A state championship last weekend resembled a backward “C.” The free kick from the New Trier High School junior midfielder landed exactly where Frei had intended it to land, behind leaping Neuqua Valley High School keeper Hannah Parrish and inside a big onion bag. Frei had struck again on June 6, giving her Trevians a 2-0 lead in the first half at North Central College in Naperville. Frei had stunned the Wildcats with a goal, from 20 yards out, only 59 seconds after the start of the contest. The same Celia Frei had entered the match with only three goals in 20 matches. “I saw this coming,” Trevians coach Jim Burnside said of Frei’s two-goal performance in NT’s 2-0 victory. “What you saw is what Celia does. “She picked a perfect day to show what kind of player she is, didn’t she?” the coach added. An injury to that oh-so-valuable right foot — a sprained ligament on the top of it — kept Frei from playing in New Trier’s first eight games this spring. It did not keep her from doing everything possible to return to pitches in time to help New Trier (27-1-1) successfully defend its state championship. Frei’s time in New Trier’s training room, with trainer Kristin Romani in March and the early part of April, nearly equaled the time she spent breathing during the same span. When she was cleared to run and swing her right foot at soccer balls in practices, she stayed after practice to run some more and swing her right foot at more soccer balls. Burnside watched her work, watched her shots curl, bend, swerve, detour beautifully. “Her foot skills … they’re the best,” Trevians senior defender Jackie Welch said. “She is creative. [Burnside] says her shots are nasty.” Welch’s shot — a close-range header off a corner kick from breathless Trevians junior forward Kelly Maday — saved New Trier’s season in a state semifinal on June 5. It clinched a 1-0 double overtime defeat of Barrington High School. Maday delivered the assist on Frei’s first tally in the title match. “I was open [in the box],” Frei said. “Kelly found me, sent me a nice pass.” Nothing got past Trevians junior goalkeeper Dani Kaufman (six saves in the final, four saves in the semifinal). Kaufman played in seven playoff matches this spring and in seven last spring. Her goals-against average in 14 postseason matches looks exactly like a dreadful grade-point average: 0.00. Clean sheets galore. “She’s unbelievable,” Frei said. Shortly after the final horn sounded in the state final, a beaming Welch sprinted toward a beaming Kaufman, jumped and landed in the trusty arms

of her keeper. Another save. The state championship was the fifth in program history, all under Burnside. He found himself worried only once last weekend, and he shared the concern with a smile after the state championship. “Half my team was still sleeping at 2 p.m. (in hotel beds on June 6, after the exhausting semifinal),” he cracked. “But they came out laser-focused at the start [of the championship], rebounded well from that lengthy semifinal. The beauty in being young is that you’re always ready to go. My team was ready to go. We showed great energy.” Neuqua got the rude wake-up call, one second shy of a minute, thanks to Frei’s sudden 0-0 breaker. In between posing for pictures and receiving countless plaudits from people of all ages, Burnside remembered a moment during the season that made him wince. Fans of an opposing team at a tournament in May yelled, over and over, “Overrated,” at his Trevians. The sing-songy message stung then. And lingered. Until June 6, when another New Trier sports team had claimed yet another first-place state trophy.

“They took that personally, and it stuck with them,” Burnside recalled.

ANOTHER KEEPSAKE Freda, Ramblers are golden after claiming a memorable, hard-fought state championship BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

I

t did not go down as a groundball control on a statistics sheet. But Loyola Academy girls lacrosse coach John Dwyer scooped it up, a lacrosse ball that had been rolled to him by an official, and smoothly deposited into the left pocket of his maroon team jacket last weekend at Glenbrook North High School. The ball/memento had been used in LA’s 6-4 defeat of Hinsdale Central in the Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association (IHSWLA) state championship on June 5. The victory upped the Ramblers’ consecutive state championship total to seven, a sweet number, a dynasty number. “I don’t look at it that way,” Dwyer insisted. “This team — this year’s team — just won its first in a row. “Next year’s team,” he added, “will have won zero in a row.” His daughter, sophomore Brennan Dwyer, poured in two goals in a row in the second half and three of LA’s final four goals in the title tilt against Hinsdale Central’s Red Devils (15-9), a game, fearless bunch against a team that would have made American Pharoah stop in his tracks, rear back and applaud with a round of clip-clops. The squads played to a 2-2 tie in the first half. “We would have been down 7-2, maybe 8-2, at the half, if we hadn’t had Ana [Freda] in goal for us,” John Dwyer said of his junior keeper, a first-team IHSWLA all-stater — one of seven from his 2015 crew (24-3). “She played great (13 saves in the game], gave us the chance to win, and Hinsdale Central had a phenomenal game plan. Our defense, overall, kept us in the game. Our offense [in the first half ] was a little jumpy, a little edgy.” Hinsdale Central sophomore attack Anna Santulli, a first-team all-state pick, had entered the state championship with 85 goals. She also exited Glenbrook North’s stadium with 85 goals. She was LA senior defender Laine Dolan’s assignment. Santulli looked and looked and fought and fought for a scoring lane, any kind of scoring lane. She saw a Laine instead, a fellow first-team all-stater, a stickler wielding a

stick. The Red Devils scored only two goals in the second half, none in the final 21:41. But HC had taken a 4-2 lead at 21:42, getting a pair of goals from senior middie Anne Richter. Brennan Dwyer went to work shortly thereafter, executing her hard-to-stop roll dodge. The first-team all-stater’s first two tallies — separated by 3:12 — knotted it at 4-4. Dwyer’s creative, where-did-she-go? spin moves and jukes and dekes elicited waves of “Ohhhhhs” from awfully impressed LA fans more than a few times. “Her quickness, her acceleration … she dug deep for those goals,” LA junior middie/attack Tessa Waters said. “When we all dig deep, we tend to do well.” Dwyer later drew a penalty,

leading to an eight-meter bounce goal from Waters at the 9:39 mark of the second half. The goal broke the 4-4 tie. Insurance came in the form of Dwyer’s third goal of the night, with 6:51 left. And to think: Dwyer (team highs of 91 goals and 58 assists in 2015) wasn’t 100 percent healthy. “At critical times she showed composure and a lot of heart,” John Dwyer said. “Once we got the lead,” the coach added, “our kids, all of our kids, played more confidently. We never got rattled in the second half. We started to do what we do.” Freda continued to make valiant saves in the second half, some coming on point-blank shots. She stopped one fired right at her midsection, quick-wristing

her stick to avoid damage to herself — and Loyola’s 6-4 lead at the time. The ball deflected off the throat of her stick, bounding safely toward a teammate to her left. She disengaged herself from a post-game, midfield hug with her mother, Victoria, to discuss her approach to the difficult duties associated with stopping fastballs that come at her from all angles. “I try not to get nervous when I’m out there,” said Freda, an Illinois Elite club member who intends to collect saves for her club on both of her country’s coasts this summer. “I saw the ball really well tonight. So many players stepped up for us tonight. “All season,” she added, “a lot of us got together to work on our games on the weekends, on our

days off.” Notable: Loyola Academy defeated visiting Hinsdale Central 16-6 in the teams’ regular season meeting on April 15. … Brennan Dwyer, an All-America pick last spring, was named to IHSWLA’s all-state first team and amassed 179 draw controls, another teamhigh number. … LA senior attack Caroline Heldring, senior defender Claire Rushin, senior attack Kathleen Hulseman and senior middie Megan Schulte also earned IHSWLA all-state honors (first team). The lone second-team allstater was junior defender Caroline Thompson. The IHSWLA named Ramblers sophomore middie Colleen Huffman to its all-state honorable mention team. … Hulseman and LA junior

middie/defender Bailey Busscher each scored a goal in the state championship game last weekend. … Waters poured in six goals — five in the first half — in Loyola Academy’s 18-7 rout of Glenbrook South in a state semifinal at Evanston Township High School on June 3. … Waters, on John Dwyer: “He inspires us every day. We work hard because he works hard. He cares so much about lacrosse and our school’s program.” … Waters, on the 2-2 tie at the half of the state title game: “We knew that wasn’t really us. We trusted each other and played with much more confidence in the second half.”

LILY ON THE FIELD

New Trier’s Novak ready for Northwestern after blossoming as a solid-hitting, slick-fielding shortstop BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

A

n eight-year-old Lily Novak throws a softball to her father, Joe, on the front lawn of their home. The ball sails over her father’s head. Joe Novak pivots, runs after it, runs back to his original spot on a patch of grass. Li’l Lily grips the softball again. Joe, a patient man, awaits the next toss. The throw is high again. Dad pivots again, runs again. A game of catch with his eager, wide-eyed daughter has morphed into a series of sprints for the Highland Park High School graduate and third baseman in a men’s league. Lily Novak, some 10 years later, recalled the front-lawn sessions on a patch of grass near the Glenbrook South High School softball field on June 6. The New Trier High School senior and Northwestern University-bound shortstop had just played in her final prep softball game, a 6-4 loss to Stevenson in a Class 4A sectional final. “That’s one of my early memories, my dad running after my throws,” Novak said, laughing. “He’s been so supportive, always there for me, like my mom [Marylou] has been.” To see Lily Novak play shortstop these days is to see a teen make a tough position look like the easiest position to play. She gobbles up tricky grounders effortlessly and throws right-on lasers to her first baseman. Her dad’s head? It no longer looks up at his daughter’s throws; it nods approvingly at them, in bleachers, near fences, wherever he happens to be when Lily is turning sure singles or sure gap extra-base hits into slick 6-3 putouts. “So smooth,” Trevians coach John Cadwell said. “She makes fielding look so easy, doesn’t she? Fun to watch. Lily is fun to watch. She’s steady, too … steady and spectacular.” Novak sparkled at the plate as well this spring, batting .387 for a 20-15 squad. She struck a teamhigh 46 hits, scored 31 runs and knocked in 27 more in 35 games, a year after batting .397 with 24 RBI. Looking for consistency? Novak’s hit total last spring, for a 29-5-1 club, was 46. She got her 46th hit this spring in the bottom of the fifth inning of the sectional final, an infield single behind the circle and between Stevenson’s shortstop and second baseman. The captain, a three-year starter who hit .429 as a sophomore, was as productive off the field as she was on it, organizing all kinds of team activities. One was a scavenger hunt, with the scavengers (teammates) instructed to get baristas’ phone numbers at Starbucks locations. That took guts, in some cases a latte guts. “I’m sure some of the phone numbers we got were real ones and others were fake,” the 5-foot-6 Novak said. Trevs had to complete other requests on the journey list. Nobody won the scavenger hunt. Everybody who participated, in essence, won it, teambonding being much more important than declaring a victor. Trevians sophomore pitcher/third baseman Alicia Bagan took it all in this spring, from Novak’s softball exploits to Novak’s commitment to see a team coalesce daily. “A true role model,” Bagan said of Novak. “She took charge, she cheered for all of us, and she made

great plays. She brought the team together … was the heart of the team. And she helped me so much, with my swing, with my throws, with everything. The best advice she gave me was the importance of moving on [after a tough moment in a game] and looking ahead to the next play.” Novak’s top moment of the year had to be in a Glenbrook South dugout on June 2, in the top of the eighth inning in a sectional semifinal against reigning 4A state champion Warren Township High School. Novak had just scored the go-ahead run — on a squeeze bunt, from senior outfielder Laura Bagan — and entered a sanctuary of ecstatic, jumping Trevians. She received hugs and high fives and helmet slaps, too many to count, in a game that

would end 3-2 in NT’s favor. “We surrounded her and ‘attacked’ her in our dugout,” Alicia Bagan recalled. “That was fun. That was a good scene, an exciting scene.” Notable: Former New Trier softball star — and one of Novak’s future Northwestern teammates — Abbey Boyd (Class of ’14) saw action in 31 games as a freshman for the Wildcats’ women’s softball team this spring. She scored 12 runs, drew a walk and stole a base for a 28-23 team. Boyd played on three Class 4A regional championship teams at New Trier. … Among Novak’s interests other than softball is film. She recently completed a project about Tim Burton, the film director, producer, writer

and animator. “I’m interested in what goes on behind the camera, shooting and editing, things like that,” she said. “I also like science. I took physics; I enjoyed it.” … NT senior Lee Fisher had a postseason to remember. In the four-game set, Fisher went 10for-15. She clubbed four home runs, including a seventh-inning shot over the center-field fence against Stevenson, and drove in nine runs. She finished the season hitting .381 with team-best six homers and 24 RBIs. … Senior outfielder Amanda Howell hit .378 with four homers and a team-high 33 RBIs. … Laura Bagan was a doubles machine. In hitting .352 with 24 RBIs, she banged out 14 two-baggers. … Gillian Gossard put together a fine sophomore season. The third baseman hit .345.

Trevians finish 37-3 after falling to Sandburg in state quarterfinal

D

ante Chakravorti, bound to play volleyball at the University of California-Irvine, sat in a chair in Hoffman Estates last weekend, sounding nothing like a teen hailing from a North Shore suburb in Illinois. The New Trier High School senior setter could have easily passed for a cool, easygoing kid from California, surfboard under an arm, an easy smile under a pair of shades and an eye-catching arrangement of thick hair. Chakravorti and his teammates had just lost a taut state quarterfinal match to Sandburg High School at Hoffman Estates High School on June 5. It must have hurt, falling 30-28, 18-25, 25-18 to a formidable team that hadn’t lost since April 20. NT’s Trevians had lost in the same round last spring. But the 6-foot-3 standout stayed positive throughout the post-match press conference, praising Sandburg’s heavy hitters and orating odes to NT junior outside hitters Peter Hindsley and Henry Lindstrom. “Great dudes, quiet dudes,” Chakravorti said of Hindsley (14 kills vs. Sand-

burg) and Lindstrom (8 kills) in classic West Coast-speak. “On the outside, they can do absolutely anything on the court. Those dudes can take absolute garbage [sets] and do great things with them.” Chakravorti did not loft much rubbish in 2015. The American Volleyball Coaches Association honored him with All-America status (second team). He finished with 36 assists in his final prep match, and Sandburg coach Sean Airola knew Chakravorti would be a handful on the big stage. “Their setter,” he said, “is capable of dishing it well wherever he wants. We prepared for New Trier and studied New Trier as much as possible. [The Trevians’] defense … that defense is strong. We knew that. We also knew that it would come down to performing, that it would come down to heart. “New Trier is a quality team,” Airola added. “You saw two elite teams out there.” NT (37-3) did not trail in the first set until a kill from Sandburg junior outside hitter Jake Hanes (13 kills) put the Eagles up 25-24. A Chakravorti kill gave NT a

28-27 edge. Sandburg (36-4) answered with three straight points to take the first set. Eagles headed to the other side of the net, confident and soaring, having cornered the market on momentum, volleyball’s most precious commodity. “Our team was pretty resilient all year,” Chakravorti would say later. The trait resurfaced in the middle of a state quarterfinal. New Trier jumped to an 8-3 lead in the second set, with the eighth point (a kill by senior outside hitter Daniel Wacura) prompting Airola to call a timeout. A kill by New Trier senior middle blocker Andrew Sommer (10 kills) expanded the gap to 17-11. Steady, pounding production from Hindsley and Lindstrom thereafter forced a third set. NT had yanked the most precious commodity from Sandburg. “That second [set] was a great representation of our team,” said Hindsley, who, like Lindstrom, is 6-2, a club member of Vernon Hills-based Adversity and a collegiate volleyball hopeful. New Trier and Sandburg split the first eight points of the decisive set. Sandburg’s decisive stretch in the clincher, a 5-0 run,

had New Trier facing a 17-9 deficit. NT’s previous loss this spring was to Naperville North, way back on May 2. Coach Sue Ellen Haak’s boys then won 12 straight matches, none more exciting — and satisfying — than the 20-25, 25-20, 25-20 defeat of a tenacious Loyola Academy squad in the Glenbrook South Sectional final on June 2. LA’s Ramblers had downed NT in three sets on April 25. “That win … that was it,” Lindstrom, probably echoing the sentiments of many Trevs, said of his fondest memory of the ’15 season. Haak fielded questions at last weekend’s press conference following her team’s state quarterfinal loss. Several other NT senior players sat between her and Chakravorti. She looked back at the season, grateful and proud. Her club never hoped to win; it expected to win. She spoke highly of the Trevians’ resolute approach all spring. Dudes dug for volleyballs. Dudes dug volleyball, the sport. “This group was special, very special,” she said. “Intense, too. They each had such

a competitive fire. How deep this team was — that’s also something I’ll remember about it. We had 12 guys start for us. Twelve. We had strong seniors. Our juniors played important roles; they were humble, focused, and they worked hard. We had experience on our side.” Notable: Hindsley (253 kills) and Lindstrom (222) finished as the Trevians’ top two attackers. … NT senior middle Collin Crowder paced the team in blocks (80). … Trevians senior libero Brian Hammes finished with a team-high eight digs in the state quarterfinal loss to Sandburg. … Haak’s record after 14 seasons at New Trier is 386-144 (.728). New Trier’s state quarterfinal appearance last weekend was the program’s fourth under Haak since 2007. Her 2011 crew finished runner-up at state. … Hammes, on his prep volleyball career: “It was a great honor to be a part of this program. Hats off to our [volleyball] alumni. So many of them stayed in contact with us.”

I’m thrilled to introduce myself, although I suspect that many of you already know me or someone in my family. As a long time Lake Forest resident, with three generations of family living here, you’re likely to know or work with someone I’m related to! My husband, Chris and I raised our two amazing daughters here and know what a truly special place this is. But it’s not just the beautiful beach, houses or schools that make Lake Forest/Lake Bluff such a treasure...it’s really the amazing people who are committed to the community as well as to helping those less fortunate that really sets LF/LB apart. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with amazing volunteers through my affiliations with The Gorton Drop-In Center, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Women’s Board, Woodlands Academy Mother’s Club and Alumnae Boards, The Daniel Murphy Foundation and most actively with the LF Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. I’m continually humbled by how tirelessly these wonderful volunteers work to help others.

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

HEMMER TIME

Senior all-stater helps Trevians to finish on a happy note BY BILL MCLEAN SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

G

race Hemmer babysits. The New Trier High School senior lacrosse middie and first-team all-stater plans to devote much of her summer to looking after kids. Who knows? Maybe she will use her lacrosse stick to relay food to her charges, to pick up after them, to make them laugh. And learn about the nuances of stickhandling. “I’m a pretty lenient babysitter,” a smiling Hemmer said last weekend. She took care — good care — of some lacrosse business at Glenbrook North High School on June 5, dishing two key assists in the Trevians’ 8-6 defeat of Glenbrook South in the game for third place in the Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association (IHSWLA) state tournament. The first big pass, a risky one above lots of sticks and in front of the Titans’ keeper, found junior middie Darby Tingue. Tingue whipped in a quick shot, giving NT a 7-5 lead at 7:15 of the second half. Fifty-two seconds later, senior attack Meegan Maloney received a pass from University of Michigan-bound Hemmer and scored to make it 8-5, a fairly comfortable cushion against South’s potent attack. Hemmer Time came late. Twice. It helped the Trevians (20-3) put their tough semifinal loss to Hinsdale Central behind them, way behind them. HC’s Red Devils (15-8) had downed NT 8-2 at Evanston Township High School on June 3. “[NT senior goalie] Danni LeServe is the anchor of our team,

and Grace is the heart,” Trevians coach Pete Collins said. “Grace knows how to make plays … big plays.” Senior attack Emily Carothers and sophomore attack Katherine Gjertsen stood out in South’s zone, striking for two goals apiece. Gjertsen’s pair put NT up 2-0 on a sunny, windy, chilly late afternoon. Carothers’ consecutive tallies expanded the lead to 5-2. NT, the state runner-up last year, led 6-4 at intermission. “We shot better, and we finished better,” Collins said, comparing his team’s final game to his team’s semifinal. “I’m so proud of the way our team responded after a disappointing loss. From the beginning of the season we worked hard to learn all about trust. We won four games by two goals [and one by one goal]. Great season. We had a lot of fun. These kids … they made it fun.” Hemmer, off the field? In a word? “Fun,” Trinity [Conn.] Collegebound Carothers said. “She’s crazy and fun, constantly laughing, the one with all the babysitting jobs.” New Trier’s seniors made sure they and the rest of the squad stayed positive, from start to finish, against Glenbrook South (16-5). Hemmer called the semifinal loss to Hinsdale Central “a huge setback.” To end a season with a victory was just as huge. “We came together so well as a team [against GBS],” said Carothers, an IHSWLA all-stater (second team), like Gjertsen. “That was tough, that loss to Hinsdale Central.”

Senior middie Madi MacRitchie and junior middie Audrey Kingdom scored New Trier’s other goals in the third-place game on June 5. LeServe came through again, making clutch save after clutch save. “Danni LeServe, “Glenbrook South coach Annie Lesch said, “played an amazing game. Credit her, credit New Trier.” Notable: LeServe, Tingue and New Trier junior middie Tace Sutherland joined Hemmer, Gjertsen and Carothers as IHSWLA all-state picks. LeServe, Tingue and Sutherland earned honorable mention status. … New Trier edged host Glenbrook South 9-7 on April 30. … Loyola Academy (24-3) defeated Hinsdale Central 6-4 for its seventh straight IHSWLA state title on June 5. … Gjertsen finished first among Trevians in goals (41) and points (50) this spring, ahead of Carothers (27 goals, eight assists). … Hemmer, on her favorite part of the 2015 season: “Twenty-eight players coming together, bonding and working hard.” Michigan’s women’s lacrosse team finished 5-12 this spring. One of Hemmer’s teammates in Ann Arbor next spring will be middie Anna Schueler, a 2013 Loyola Academy graduate. Schueler, the lone player from Illinois on the roster, made the inaugural Big Ten All-Tournament team in ’15. She started all 17 games as a sophomore this spring, scoring a team-best 34 goals and finishing second among teammates in points (41).

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

HOW SUITE IT IS TO SELL PREMIUM PRODUCT Bulls home games and receive the option to purchase

BY DAVID SWEET

As Greg Hanrahan, dressed in a dark suit, walks through the luxury suites at the United Center on a recent weekday, he notes the challenge of keeping them filled. “The product on the ice or on the court can change on a dime,” says the senior director of premium seating at the Chicago arena. “The coach can be fired.” Case in point: an hour or so after that comment, a press conference a few levels down revealed the Chicago Bulls had ousted their coach, To m Thibodeau. Though wonloss records are out of Hanrahan’s control, the suite experience is not. And his rate of success is strong. About 20 percent of charter suite members still remain since the building opened in 1994, suffering through the Tim Floyd era and many hapless Chicago Blackhawk teams. “I believe our service kept them renewing with us,” says the Lake Forest resident, whose 180 suites all enjoy waiting lists. “People demand, as they should, superior service.” Though he’s been through plenty of quiet Mays and Junes on West Madison Street, that hasn’t been the case this year. With the Bulls making the playoffs and the Blackhawks reaching the Stanley Cup, Hanrahan has experienced many late nights chatting with suite holders and ensuring all runs smoothly. Though he’s heard plenty of deafening roars this spring, the United Center on this day is quiet, with no sign the Blackhawks had beaten the Anaheim Ducks the night before. Hanrahan points with pride how clean and fresh the stadium is, belying its busy 21-year history. The suites, which will all be renovated in 2017

(sofas w i l l Greg Hanrahan likely be out, as fans prefer to move around during games), are far from one size fits all. Theater boxes with four seats, private coat closets and elegant dining offer the ambiance of the opera, while the 11,000-square-foot BMO Harris Club possesses three bars, a pool table and often a large number of children wandering about. Suite holders must buy all Blackhawks and

concert tickets (U2 will play there five | Illustration by Barry Blitt times this summer). Depending on the number of seats acquired, suites can cost anywhere from $50,000$600,000 annually, with leases running three to five years. Says Hanrahan, “I put marriages together. I help my customers divide their costs with others so they can stay longer. It costs more to bring in

a new customer than to keep an old one.” After graduating from Beloit College in 1986, where he played basketball, Hanrahan was offered a job at Lake Forest High School, his alma mater, to teach and help coach for about $30,000. The Bulls presented him the opportunity to sell season tickets via cold calls in the old Chicago Stadium at a low base salary plus commission. He chose the latter — but sometimes wondered why. “People hang up on you and yell at you as you’re trying to sell them a bad seat in the second balcony,” Hanrahan recalls. “But you need that foundation of experience to do well in business.” As Michael Jordan (more on him later) started bringing championships to town, ticket sales ceased to be a problem. Jerry Reinsdorf even flew Hanrahan and his family to away finals games in Los Angeles and elsewhere. But when the United Center opened, it featured 216 luxury suites. The Stadium had zero. Hanrahan was tapped to sell the premium seating. A guy who had won the lottery bought a suite. The ones that ring the top of the United Center were all sold before ground was broken (in fact, the money generated by suite sales allowed construction to begin). When the United Center hosted the Democratic National Convention in 1996, Hanrahan — son of former Republican Congressman and Ford Administration veteran Robert Hanrahan — was forbidden to enter suites for the first and only time. “I literally never got to see what was going on,” he recalls. “I joke that it was because of my Republican background.” Though other stadiums in San Francisco and Miami feature high-tech devices in suites, the United Center has resisted the trend. “We’ve tested these things. The gadgets don’t work in Chicago — people want to watch the games” he says. Back to Jordan, In 1981, Hanrahan played against him in a game at a Pennsylvania basketball camp. The future Hall of Famer dunked over the future luxury suite guru. Five years later, as a new Bulls’ employee, Hanrahan greeted the budding superstar. “You don’t remember me from Adam,” Hanrahan told him. “But you dunked on me.” Said Jordan, “I usually do.” A slam dunk occurred when Hanrahan was poised to introduce his children to Jordan after the NBA great retired. Upon seeing him, Jordan ran over and gave him a big hug. Says Hanrahan, “They finally believed I knew him.”

keep it local...

Did you know that when you work with an @properties broker to buy or sell your home, you not only receive the very best service in the North Shore marketplace, you also benefit the local community? That’s because @properties is an independent, locally-owned company. Most of our competitors are franchise brands, sending revenue to other states, while all of @properties revenue and tax dollars are invested back into the community, helping local schools, parks, services and infrastructure, and creating additional job opportunities. A home is the ultimate local investment. At @properties, we’re proud to keep it that way.

BE LOCAL.
