State budget woes may weigh on village By EMILY SPECTRE

W

hile Wilmette’s financial picture appears to be bright, with projected revenues up and expenditures under budget, members of the Village Board and Village Staff expressed uncertainty about the potential impact of the state’s budget woes at their Committee of the Whole meeting on July 28. “All municipalities are waiting with bated breath over what will happen in Springfield,” said Village Manager Timothy Frenzer. Already, the Village has lost $36,000 in state shared revenues, and Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) distributions are being withheld. At the meeting, Frenzer explained that Governor Bruce Rauner has Continued on PG 12

FIRST WORD

Ravinia Wine Club’s good taste sets the stage “W ho loves not woman, wine, and song remains a fool his whole life long” is a quote attributed to Martin Luther, though it’s hard to believe a German priest who was busy creating 95 theses to launch a religious revolution would utter such a thought. Ravinia Wine Club has embraced Luther’s last two affections and even added a new one: cheese. Before certain Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts for the past five years, the music festival and Terlato Wines have offered tastings of a half dozen red and white wines. Experts — including

ones flown in from California wineries — describe the selections and answer questions. At a recent gathering of 70 aficionados who paid $15 apiece, Lauren DeWulf of Terlato shared her knowledge about Chateau de Sancerre from France, Loveblock Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and other wines from the Old and New Worlds, all either imported by or created by the Lake Bluff company. “It’s more common in the Old World that you eat when you drink your wine,” she noted — thus explaining the cheeses in front of us provided by North Shore’s Sunset Foods. Of the three choices, the blue cheese was especially tasty. “I asked, ‘Why does the world need another cheese?’ “ said Thaddeus Taziloi, vice president of marketing at Sunset Foods, about whether he should sell Grand Noir from Germany at the local stores. But the creaminess persuaded him (“They dip each wheel of cheese in a wax to not let moisture out of it”).

“ Moving on to the two reds, DeWulf suggested the audience sip Belleruche Rouge, whose name means ‘beautiful beehive.’” Moving on to the two reds in the PNC Private Dining Room, DeWulf suggested the audience sip Belleruche Rouge, whose name means “beautiful beehive.” Created by French winemaker Domaine Chapoutier, Braille rests on the label as a tribute to the blind son of the family from whom the Chapoutiers acquired their first vineyard. The hour-long tasting and education session ends about 90 minutes before the concert begins,

giving all comers a chance to enjoy dinner (they can buy a Wine Club package that includes food at Mirabelle). Then, on this night, an all-Russian program sponsored by Maxine and Thomas Hunter is conducted by James Conlon, featuring the works of Modest Mussorgsky, Dmitri Shostakovich and Serge Rachmaninoff. The rising sound of chirping crickets accompanies “Dawn on the Moscow River.” Though the Ravinia Wine Club (despite its name, no initiation or dues apply) has concluded for the year, outdoor tastings of Terlato wines will take place Friday, Aug. 14 and Thursday, Sept. 3 on the sidewalk just north of the pavilion and in front of the gift shop. There may not be cheese at those tables, but as Luther would attest, wine and music remain a fine pairing. Enjoy the weekend.

NEWS BUDGET WOES Cont. from PG 1

REMEMBER Cont. from PG 1

proposed a $1.3 million reduction to the village’s Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF) and a two-year property tax freeze that would reduce tax revenues by $1.2 million. The LGDF is Wilmette’s share of state income taxes that is returned to the village. “The problem with that is it goes a lot deeper than the two-year freeze,” Frenzer said, expressing concern that Gov. Rauner’s plans could cause a permanent reduction in the way that the village raises revenue. Frenzer noted that while the village has ample reserves to offset the state cuts in the short term, the reserves will not cover a longterm revenue reduction. If Gov. Rauner’s plan becomes a reality, Frenzer anticipates cuts to personnel spending, which comprises 75 percent of the village’s budget. But when the meeting turned to the village’s current revenues, the mood was more upbeat. Assistant Village Manager Michael Braiman reported a projected $700,000 surplus in the general fund, while expenditures are projected to be under budget by $200,000. Village Finance Director Melinda Molloy reported that sales tax revenues are up 23 percent in the last year, since the home rule sales tax passed. Employment rates have continued to rise as the economy improves, while building permits increased and home values have risen.

Among them was Laurie Stein, curator of the Lake ForestLake Bluff Historical Society, who found casualty reports from the Chicago Tribune and from the Lake Forester, including a photo of 2nd Lt. Hughes. Marshall Hughes was born in Glencoe on Aug. 2, 1922. He attended Groton School in Massachusetts and was a student for one year at Harvard University, where he participated in the steeplechase, including the Maryland Hunt Club. Around this time, his family moved to Lake Forest. Hughes was attending classes at Lake Forest College when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 22, 1943. According to Ruth Ann Bopp of the Lake Forest College registrar’s office, Marshall Hughes was awarded a half-semester’s credits when he enlisted. He was inducted at Fort Sheridan on Feb. 27. He attended O.C.S. at Camp Davis, N.C. As a newly commissioned second lieutenant he was sent to England, where he volunteered for airborne and was assigned on Dec. 23, 1944, to D Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. There were three other Hughes brothers who served during World War II. • Milton, Marshall’s twin,

When asked why she wanted to lead a large congregation, Geffen was unequivocal in her response. “I wanted to have a position where I could help strategize and create community in how I envisioned it to be,” she said. Geffen loves the diversity of a larger congregation, which she feels adds vibrancy to the community. Having grown up in Dallas where the Jewish community is much smaller, she loves the North Shore and Chicago area where there are so many other members of her faith. Geffen noted that when she first moved here she was stunned to learn that the local school districts take days off for Jewish holidays. Moving forward, she plans to continue the synagogue’s commitment to social justice causes. “For me personally, it is a deep part of my Jewish identity,” she said.

teaching others. She was also involved in a youth group at her synagogue in Dallas, where the rabbi became her mentor and huge role model in her life. As a student at Emory University, Geffen studied Judaic Studies and began to appreciate academia and the scholarly side of Judaism. Geffen describes how all of these experiences came together, ultimately leading her in 1997 to attend rabbinical school at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, a reform seminary. Geffen chose a reform seminary, finding that the reform movement ideologically and philosophically aligned with her views. And at that time, she also knew that the reform movement was more open to her becoming a rabbi at a larger congregation. Geffen was ordained in New York City and immediately joined North Shore Congrega-

1944 and fought until relieved 33 days later. In September the division was airdropped into Nijmegen (Netherlands) to take bridges over the Waal River, a gateway to Germany. Totally surprising Allied forces, the Nazi army burst out of the Ardennes Forest on Dec. 16, 1944, seeking to capture the port of Antwerp and cut off supplies to the allied armies. Soldiers of the 82nd Airborne became infantrymen intent on stopping the German advance. Eddy Lamberty said that on Dec. 18 the German Army had

surrounded his town. The 82nd Airborne moved in and, defying Gen. Bernard Montgomery’s orders to withdraw, prevailed in the battle that ended Dec. 24. Helping Allied forces substantially was the clearing of the winter weather that allowed its air superiority to assert itself. The Battle of the Bulge lasted until Jan. 25, at which time German forces withdrew, leaving most of its vehicles behind. Blending P families not as easy as it was for Brady Bunch

Joanna Brown

art of growing up for so many of my peers was fantasizing about being a part of the Brady Bunch. They were a blended family of Mrs. Brady’s daughters and Mr. Brady’s sons, but you couldn’t tell by looking at them. Their home was full of laughter, and the children were the best of friends. Every day was sunny, and every squabble was solved, often with a moral attached. But it was far from the reality that blended families face, explained Anne Brennan Malec, a clinical physchologist, therapist and author of the book, “Marriage in Modern Life: Why it Works, When it Works.” She is also the founding partner of Symmetry Counseling, a counseling, coaching, and psychotherapy group practice with offices in Chicago and Winnetka. When two adults love each other, Malec said, they often assume that their children will easily jump on board and similarly love their new stepparents and stepsiblings. Instead, Malec urged parents to be patient while these new relationships develop in their own way and on their own timeline. “The kids didn’t get a vote in forming a new family, and moving between houses is a pain in the neck for anyone, but they are forced to adapt,” said Malec, who has been a stepmother for 16 years. “Be patient and have low ex-

There will be mistakes and hurt feelings. Know that it is a slow process.” The time and effort you put into it, however, is more important that you’d think. “It’s really important for couples blending their families to be aware that how well those relationships are formed and how well those transitions are made plays an enormous role in the outcome of the new marriage,” Malec said. “Second, third and fourth marriages have higher rates of divorce, and the complexity of blending families plays

into that. “But no parent can force a kid to like their stepparent. Like any other relationship, these need to be formed organically, with friendship and support.” Beyond managing expectations within the blended family, Malec reminded newlyweds of the importance of maintaining cordial relationships with their former spouses. It can be hard, but communicating respectfully and in the best interests of the children will benefit the new relationships you are all trying to grow. And of course Malec remind-

ed newlyweds to nurture their own romance by setting aside kid-free time. “Making time for just the two of you is critical to the success of your relationship, she said. “Without proper attention, the new relationship can drop down the priority list as you get caught up in smoothing the transition for the children, creating a blended home and growing comfortable with your role as a stepparent.” Find more of Malec’s advice at www.drannemalec.com. North Shore Foodie

Mother of 12 helps inspire trio of restaurants By Simon Murray

t’s the house that Isaac built — the somewhat irreconcilable but distinctly American idea of a Jewish-Mexican deli. From dishwasher to fry cook to deli clerk to restaurateur, it’s the American Dream realized. La Casa De Isaac in Highland Park is one of three restaurants — one being a deli —owned by Isaac Nava. The restaurateur, who is Jewish, comes to the U.S. by way of Huitzuco, so named after the thorny Sweet Acacia shrub that dots the landscape.

Before he was born, Nava’s father was invited by associates in Mexico City to a Shabbat dinner. The rest, shall we say, is history. Nava’s father converted to Judaism, and the entire family (Isaac is the oldest male of 12 siblings) were brought up Jewish. They weren’t allowed to play sports on Saturdays, in respect of the Sabbath. They weren’t allowed to eat non-kosher foods. “Growing up, I don’t remember ever eating pork or shellfish,” says Nava. He likens childhood mealtimes to being at a restaurant. Owner Isaac Nava

“There was 12 of us, so can you imagine having to feed 12 kids for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?” he asks. When Nava, like his father before him, headed north with a work visa, he bounced around kitchens, always working his way up. When opportunity came knocking, he pounced. A restaurant partnership led to more opportunities, but along the way, Nava brought the most genuine piece of Mexican culture he could bring with him: his mother. “Even though I grew up in

1. In a large pan or casserole, add a half bottle of wine and bring it to a boil. Add a half cup of water to the white wine reduction. Add a pinch

of cornstarch to the water and salt to taste. 2. In a separate pan, add the garlic and olive oil, adding pepper to taste. Bring the temperature to a very low heat (in order for the garlic and pepper not to burn). 3. Once the white wine reduction is boiling, add the garlic, combining the two together in the same pan.

“However you want,” says Nava. In a bowl, grind a chipotle pepper into favorite BBQ sauce. Add chipotleBBQ sauce to salmon before it becomes marked by grill or cooked thoroughly in the oven or skillet. “When you add both the white wine and chipotle-BBQ sauce together,” says Nava, “it’s a great combination.” 3. In a separate skillet, sauté the diced asparagus, spinach, and white onions —adding pepper and salt to taste. 4. Spread the goat cheese onto the tortillas, adding the vegetables, cooked salmon (with the chipotle-BBQ sauce), and black beans. Roll it up and enjoy. Repeat.

Mexico, I never knew how to make good Mexican food,” says Nava. “But my mother did.” Nava knew how integral she was to the business, so he told his youngest brother, Israel, to watch what she did in the kitchen like a hawk. Eventually, her cooking prowess rubbed off. And now Israel prepares most of the dishes for all three establishments: La Casa De Isaac & Moishe, La Casa De Issac, and the writer’s personal favorite, Isaac & Moishe’s Deli. (Moishe is Nava’s brother and part owner.) “Oh, you should’ve seen this

woman,” says Nava. “Unfortunately she isn’t with us anymore, but she’s in our hearts, you know?” Her presence remains on the menu, in the form of her favorite — the enchiladas. While the Chipotle-BBQ Marinated Grilled Salmon is not traditional Spanish cuisine, it, too, is made in her honor. The ingredients, when brought together, pop. She wouldn’t have had it any other way. La Casa De Isaac is located at 431 Temple Ave. in Highland Park. Call 847-433-5550 for reservations.

Musings by Mike Lubow

ou’re driving along Sheridan Road on a sunny summer Sunday somewhere along the North Shore. The radio’s playing an oldie from the Beach Boys. All’s right with this scene. Except you’re about to encounter a crowd of bicyclists. They’re taking up a good part of the road ahead on their skinny European bikes, with their pumping spandex-bound legs, tight-fitting bright shirts, hunched-over aerodynamic bodies, heads bobbing within their futuristic helmets. You slow down and jockey around them. You’ve heard other

drivers grumble about these Sunday cyclists. You like to see the bikers having a good time and getting all that exercise, but you can’t help wondering: Why on a road so close to cars? You think about all the great bike trails on the North Shore. The Green Bay Trail, the Des Plaines River Trail, the bike paths through the Skokie Lagoons, lakefront trails in Evanston going all the way to the city. You’ve biked all these yourself, sans the spandex. The radio’s still playing something from a million summers ago, back when you were a kid,

Restoring the North Shore for 75 Years

when you rode your bike everywhere, on roads, off roads, on sidewalks, anywhere, any place. The fun of spinning spokes and easy-rolling speed was tangible. You might’ve been about to say something just now about a bike traffic jam, something about how this is Sheridan Road, not the Tour de France. But, c’mon, how can you be grumpy about anything so healthful and colorful in a setting like this, on a day like this? You drive on, thinking: gotta get the bike out of the garage, clean it off and go for a spin while this nice weather lasts.

Socials The Ragdale Ring Gala Photography by Robin Subar

The third annual Ragdale Ring Gala graced the grounds of the artist retreat in Lake Forest in June, celebrating the Belle Epoque period — during which Ragdale’s founding architect Howard Van Doren Shaw lived and worked. The garden party featured the first viewing of Shaw Town, the contemporary performance space inspired by Shaw’s original 1912 open-air theater. Guests, many in period attire, enjoyed mingling with the people of Shaw Town, including stiltwalkers, aerial performers, and a fire dancer. The evening was co-chaired by Marci and Ron Holzer and Melanie and S. Michael Rummel, as well as an active committee. More than $100,000 was raised to support the Ragdale Foundation. ragdale.org

Whether you’re writing your own contract or using a preprinted one, every contract should have specific basic elements. Include, of course, the address of the property and contingencies, financing terms and purchase price, and closing date. Other specific elements a contract must contain are: • Disposition of deposit: Who gets the binder/good faith money if the contract is terminated? It varies with the circumstances, such as a home inspection that does not meet the buyers satisfaction or the seller not being willing to make the necessary repairs (buyer gets the binder back) or such as the buyer not being able to be approved. • Seller’s Responsibilities: Include passing clear title of the property, maintaining the present condition until closing, making any agreed upon repairs. • What Stays: What fixtures and personal property remain after closing? Make your list written, not verbal and be specific. If you ask for the curtains for example, make sure you include the hardware that holds them up. • Final Walk Through: This is your chance to make sure the house is in order before closing. When you write the contract, it should be specific about what exactly happens should the walk through be unsatisfactory to the buyers.

Skar-Spangled Banner Winning gold medals and national titles is nothing new for this future Golden Gopher BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com

S

ophie Skarzynski and a friend sit at a restaurant table in Minnesota in the summer of 2015, scanning the breakfast menu. Neither knows what to order. Skarzynski, 17, grew up in Wilmette, moved to Lake Forest last summer and graduated from Loyola Academy this past spring. She is also one of the best female hockey players in the world who is unable to vote in her home country. Skarzynski looks up from her menu and leans toward a nearby table, eager to talk, pumped up to interact with total strangers. “What should I order?” she asks. “What’s good here?” In no time she learns the strangers, a father and his daughter, are from Kenilworth. Skarzynski’s eyes expand and dance. The defenseman’s dimples — each deep enough to hide a hockey puck — get deeper, her smile the culprit of the transformation. The three North Shore residents converse for five minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, about Loyola Academy and New Trier High School and other local stuff. One of the Kenilworth residents recommends the meat lover’s omelet. Skarzynski orders the meat lover’s omelet. She will love it. Skarzynski’s friend, not the least bit surprised about Skarzynski’s gift for brightening others’ days at restaurants at the drop of a napkin, laughs. Skarzynski makes people laugh, too. Often. And loudly. “I have always been a pretty social person,” Skarzynski says. “Maybe it’s because I’m child number five [of six], with three older brothers [hockey nuts Luke, 24, Mack, 22, and Jake, 19]. While growing up with them around, I liked to talk, liked to give them sass. I don’t like quiet. An awkward situation for me is a situation where people are together but aren’t talking. I’m usually the first one to say something in that kind of situation.” Sophie Skarzynski, in other words, likes to break the ice, which happens to be her favorite playing surface. Has any young North Shore athlete had a better 2015 than Skarzynski has had? Doubtful. Skarzynski played for the USA women’s U18 team in an International Ice Hockey Federation final

in Buffalo, New York, on Jan. 12. USA beat Canada 3-2 in overtime. The world gold medal rests on Skarzynski’s nightstand at home, hanging out with a couple of other big-time hockey medals. Skarzynski slept in her USA Hockey uniform, each night, from Jan. 12 until Jan. 19. (Skarzynski was only 15 years old when she was picked to play for her first USA U18 squad; it lost to Canada in the world championship final in Budapest, Hungary, in early 2014.) In April of this year, the 5-foot8 Skarzynski captained the U19 Chicago Mission AAA club (based in Woodridge) to a defeat of Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a prep school in Minnesota, in a national championship game held in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Three months, two golds. Does Shattuck-St. Mary’s sound familiar? It should, if you’re a Chicago Blackhawks fan. A fellow named Jonathan Toews played for the school’s boys team, scoring 110 points (48 goals, 62 assists) and leading the Sabres to a national championship in 2005. Skarzynski then spent the bulk

of her summer training at the University of Minnesota, her next hockey stop. The Gophers have won six NCAA championships, including three of the last four. “Sophie is an elite hockey player,” Tom Mandarino, a U19 Chicago Mission assistant coach and the Mission’s college recruitment manager, says of the offensiveminded defenseman. “She’s a very disciplined player, strong on the puck, a very good skater. Her puckpossession skills … they’re off the charts. We’ve had a handful of Olympians in our program, and she certainly has all the attributes to be another one.” Brad Frost, University of Minnesota women’s hockey coach, has seen his share of Olympians. He recruits future Olympians and devises game plans to stop future Olympians at Frozen Fours. A women’s ice hockey program exists at 36 Division I schools in the country; any of the head coaches of the 36 would be able to find ample ice time for Skarzynski. “She sees the ice well, and, as a defenseman, likes to be a part of the rush on offense at times, likes

to lead the rush,” Frost says, adding Skarzynski’s genuine zest for life and abilities to “draw people in” also attracted his staff during the recruiting process. “She certainly has the instincts to play with and against Olympians.” Skarzynski played for Chicago Young American (CYA) AAA boys hockey teams for as long as she could. One CYA coach named her assistant captain. Her male teammates respected her skills, the hockey ones and the leadership ones. Boys, though, probably razzed her a little bit, in scrimmages, in real games. She probably responded with some fun-loving sass. Or with an NHL-like pass on a gamewinning goal. NHL talk among boys surfaced at CYA practices, Skarzynski recalls. She first heard Olympics talk from a CYA coach at a practice. The coach wanted the boys and Skarzynski to know that the notion of Skarzynski suiting up for the USA in the Winter Games some year wasn’t a farfetched one. Pyeongchang, South Korea, hosts the next Winter Olympics, in 2018. “When I heard a coach mention

that, so many years ago, my immediate reaction was, ‘Cool. That would be cool.’ It’s been a dream of mine ever since, making an Olympics team. Right now I am thankful for all that hockey has allowed me to do. I’ve traveled to Europe, been given opportunities to lead and be a teammate. I’m going to get a great education because of hockey. Hockey has taught me discipline and other values. I have two sisters [Meghan, 26, and Loyola Academy juniorto-be Greta, 15, another outstanding defenseman and Chicago Mission (U16) captain], but I feel like I have hundreds of sisters, all because of the girls I’ve met through hockey. The hockey people in my life, the girls I’ve played with, the boys, the coaches, so many of them will be invited to my wedding [date and fiancé to be determined).” Skarzynski helped raise $17,000 in one night, in one Hockey Night. She organized a Chicago Mission “Pink in the Rink” breast cancer awareness event at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge. She shoots, she scores, she nets … funds. “If you’re a parent, and you have

a daughter who is anything close to the kind of kid Sophie is, you’d be thrilled, proud as can be,” says Tony Cachey, Chicago Mission women’s and girls director and Mission U19 coach. “Twelve-yearold girls look up to her and want to be like her. She’s got that mental toughness, that will to win. Fun to be around, great kid, great teammate, and she’s got a great family.” Her mom, Caren, attended Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. Her father, Peter, attended St. Viator High School, also in Arlington Heights. They had never met during those years. One day, when the two were students at the University of Chicago, Peter Skarzynski walked by the tennis courts on campus and noticed a woman hitting groundstrokes. The woman was Caren, wearing a … St. Viator sweatshirt. The Hersey graduate had donned Viator threads that day. “My mom,” Sophie Skarzynski says, “didn’t buy that sweatshirt. She found it and happened to put it on the day she met my dad. Can you believe that?” The sweatshirt got Peter’s attention. Peter approached Caren and struck up a conversation, a courtship starting courtside. Game, set, match — way before the onset of Match.com. Mom and Dad Skarzynski would have been proud had they listened in on an exchange of spirited thoughts between Sophie and Alyssa Gorecki, a U18 USA Hockey and U19 Chicago Mission teammate, after the USA’s defeat of Canada for a world championship in January. They would not have heard, “We did it, we did it!” They would not have heard, “We’re No. 1!” They would have heard a couple of teens sounding a lot like a couple of down-to-ice adults. “After big wins we like to say the same things to each other,” Gorecki, a Monee resident and University of Vermont-bound forward, says. “We like to say how blessed we are and how grateful we are for all of the opportunities hockey has given us.” Sophie Skarzynski turns 18 on Sept. 18. She’ll be eligible to vote then, a gold-medal winner celebrating her golden birthday.

Mil-burnin’ up the track Fired-up Lake Forest standout collects a pair of silver medals at Junior Olympics BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com

mma Milburn’s first workout session with the Waukegan Invaders, a track and field club, was part harrowing, part painful. The distance runner ran and ran and ran some more around the Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville. She was a Deer Path Middle School seventh-grader at the time, well aware of the club’s history of turning raw athletes into polished ones. Milburn’s thighs burned after the workout. Milburn’s quads screamed after the workout. She would feel sore for a week. “She gave me that ‘Please get me out of here’ look after the workout,” Invaders coach Ken Almond recalls. “I thought she would quit. But Emma was determined. She told me, ‘I’m not stopping, and I’ll do whatever it takes to get better.’ ” Milburn showed up for her second Waukegan Invaders workout. It went better. “A little better,” Milburn, a sophomore-to-be and track/cross country standout at Lake Forest High School, says. “I felt a little stronger.” Milburn represented the Invaders at the USA Track and Field (USATF) Junior Olympics (15-16 age division) in Jacksonville, Florida, from July 27-Aug. 2. She raced in the 800-, 1500and 3000-meet events, a daunting triple and not just because the meet was staged in a steamy state in the middle of the summer. Milburn also had to run in countless preliminary heats on the campus of the University of North Florida. Milburn survived and thrived in the Sunshine State and transported a pair of silver medals home. Her runner-up time in the 1500, 4:39.44, was seven seconds faster than her previous personal best in the event, a significant drop worthy of more than a few double takes. She took second in the 3000 (10:37.51), ninth in the 800 (2:19.06). “I watched Emma compete [via live stream],” classmate Brett Chody, also a Scouts cross country/track runner, says. “Incredible. Their little sister, Courtney Schmidt, finished third at the IESA state cross country meet in 2014, two spots behind champion Lauren Garriques. Each is a recent Deer Path Middle School alumna. Each will run in cross country races for LFHS this fall. “It’s exciting, knowing how strong our team will be,” Milburn says. “We’re going to give it our all. I like giving my all. Running … it’s a way for me to express myself.” Milburn’s running career, during her pre-Invaders days, was bumpy at first, frustrating at times. She ran an 8:40 mile, hard to believe, in a time trial back in the fifth grade. She didn’t make the Deer Path state cross country team in the sixth grade, a cut that led her to train regularly with her father, Jeff, at Old School Forest Preserve. Jeff Milburn also served — and still serves — as his daughter’s favorite fishing and hiking buddy. The Milburn family often visits Ohio, Jeff ’s native state, taking in the quiet of the Amish country and the clattering of the 16 rollercoasters at Cedar Emma-bracing the race: Sophomore-to-be Emma Milburn, seen here during the North Suburban Conference cross country meet last Point Amusement Park in Sanfall running ahead of teammates Katie Condon and Brett Chody, took 14th in state last year. Sis-boom-Boehm

Look for New Trier’s celebrated center to generate even more cheers after expanding her game this summer BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com

T

he Boehm family Christmas card/photo arrives. Each holiday season it typically startles the recipients, especially those who know Jeannie Boehm, the lone sister of five brothers. Jeannie is 6-foot-3, a senior-to-be at New Trier High School and a two-time all-state basketball player. Most of her friends and peers consider her tall. The brothers in the image — twins Peter and Jack, Connor, Mike and Spencer — and the father, Rodger, all stand at least 6-6. Boehm, oddly, doesn’t seem so tall anymore. “Those Christmas cards are the best,” Matt Truding, Jeannie Boehm’s ALL IN Athletics 17U basketball coach, says. “There’s Jeannie, a ‘monster’ of a player, a huge presence when she plays, and she’s one of the shortest members of the family [the matriarch, Susan, is an inch shy of 6 feet].” The baby of the family, Spencer, a nearly 6-8 hoopster who no longer takes baby steps, will be a freshman at NTHS this fall and a viable candidate to play varsity ball with big sister’s peers in the winter. Jeannie and Spencer often battle one-on-one atop the Boehm driveway in Winnetka, or in a gym, or near anything that resembles hoop. “He can beat me off the dribble,” Jeannie, smiling, admits, a hint of pride lacing her assessment. “I think it’s cool, the opportunity he got to play with varsity players this summer. When I was six years old, I started going to varsity boys basketball games at New Trier, and to me, the players were celebrities back then. I idolized them, all of them. They were the coolest people.” Jeannie Boehm is all grown up now, a cool person, a basketball player capable of burning opponents and nets. She averaged nearly 16 points and exactly 10.2 rebounds last winter for New Trier (31-2), the third-place team at the Class 4A state tournament. Her varsity averages as a freshman: 10 points, 10 rebounds. Her varsity averages as a sophomore: 14 points, 10 rebounds. Her overall game now? You might not recognize it.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, and its history-rich New England charm appealed to her. A ride on “The T,” a subway system, connects the campus to downtown Boston. She got to know the coaching staff and the players on a visit. She learned how integral Temi Fagbenle, a 6-4 forward and 2015 graduate, was to Harvard’s offense in the 2014-2015 season (14-14, 7-7 in the Ivy League). Fagbenle, a native of London, finished with a career average of 13.2 points per game. Boehm liked what she learned. “It came down to the staff and to the players,” Boehm says. “Temi was a fantastic post player. I can see myself in that system. The girls, they’re similar to me, have the same ambitions I have.” Perhaps no other basketball player in Illinois high school history had the disparate backto-back games Boehm had on the final weekend of the 2014-15 season. In a 57-28 4A state semifinal loss to Fremd High School in Normal, Boehm played 29 minutes and took three shots from the field. She missed them all. Boehm did not attempt a free throw. The next night, in a 43-41 defeat of Homewood-Flossmoor High School in the game for third place, Boehm, an Illinois Basketball Coaches Association firstteam all-state pick, played every minute of every quarter, scored 22 points (9-of-14 from the field, Center of attention: Two-time all-stater Jeannie Boehm, seen here in action against Evanston 4-of-4 from the free-throw line), last winter, hauled in more honors this summer as a member of ALL IN Athletics 17U team. grabbed 13 rebounds and finished PHOTOGRAPHY BY Joel Lerner with five blocks, three assists and one steal. The feel of from-the-paint dimension to her

game in the offseason would thrill her coaches and teammates and worry NT’s opponents. “I’ve seen her play this summer,” Trevians guard Kathryn Pedi, also a senior-to-be, says. “In scrimmages, she goes to work, right to work. Nothing stops her; nobody stops her. She looks stronger, faster. Her post moves, they’re quick, really quick. She stills knows how to finish well. I also train with her; she’s hitting threes, jumpers. “What I really like about her game is her leadership. That’s her main strength, by far. When we’re out there, playing with her, she’s always talking, always getting everybody involved. Seniors, juniors, sophomores … we all look up to her. We like how vocal she is, how she’s never afraid to speak her mind.” Imagine the basketball talk that mind has absorbed in the Boehm household, a dwelling teeming with mad-about-basketball people, young and old, smart and loving, tall and … taller. Boehm attributes her significant improvement as a player, from her sophomore to her junior season, to oodles of court time spent with Spencer. How many times has a Boehm brother inadvertently blurted, “Pass the ball,” when what he meant to say was, “Pass the rolls,” at the dinner table? Connor Boehm, a senior-to-be at Dartmouth College, nailed a buzzer-beating trey in a win last winter. It made ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays that night. How many folks in Winnetka talked about that shot? How many folks called the Boehms to tell them they had seen the replay of the shot? “It’s been great, growing up in a family with so many basketball players, being in gyms with my brothers, discussing the game with my brothers,” says Jeannie Boehm, as self-deprecating and fun-loving off the court as she is dominant and serious on it. “Some of the 3-on-3s we’ve had … competitive, very competitive.” Smiles are scarce in those gettogethers. They save them for the Christmas card/photo shoot.

seniors this fall, played their summer ball with the Wilmette Waves. Jack Lombardi (class of 2016) and Trey Torain (class of 2018), who attend Loyola Academy, also participated as did North Shore Country Day’s Connor Watrous (class of 2017). Lombardi is a middle infielder, who plays his club baseball with the Homestead Ranchers. Torain, a catcher/first baseman, suits up for Top Tier 15U Americans. Watrous (pitcher/first base/third base) plays for the Illinois Indians.

College Football

Holy Cross: Loyola Academy grad Peter Pujals is receiving plenty of attention heading into the fall campaign. The junior quarterback has been named to the 2015 preseason All-Patriot League football team along with his trusted wide receiver, Jake Wieczorek (Cumming, Georgia). Earlier this summer, the Glenview native earned preseason second team All-America honors from USA College Football. Pujals is coming off a terrific sophomore season with the Crusaders. He made second team all-conference after throwing for 2,353 yards (225-for-375) and 10 touchdowns. He also added 705 rushing yards, scoring six times. In two collegiate seasons, the 6-foot-2 Pujals has amassed 4,614 passing yards and 1,174 rushing yards. Holy Cross also features two other ex-Loyola standouts in junior defensive back Luke Ford and junior offensive lineman James Murray. The roster also includes Lake Forest Academy senior defensive lineman Richard Barber, Lake Forest High School sophomore defensive Jack Kutschke and Glenbrook South defensive back Brett Laurie. Ford, Murray and Barber are returning starters. The Crusaders, who were 4-8 last fall, open the season at Monmouth on Sept. 5.

Prep Baseball Report: The website updated its player rankings for the class of 2017 on Aug. 10. Lake Forest’s outfielder Brad Czerniejewski, who has made a verbal commitment to Texas Christian, is ranked No. 10. New Trier catcher Max Rosenthal is No. 33 on the list, while Glenbrook South shortstop Cameron Pauly is No. 57. In mid-July, PBR came out with its class of 2016 updated list. Lake Forest pitcher/shortstop Cal Coughlin (TCU) is No. 5, while New Trier left-hander Ben Brecht (UC-Santa Barbara) is No. 6. Others making the list include Glenbrook left-hander Casey Kempner (No. 26), Glenbrook North right-hander Michael Oh (No. 61), Glenbrook South outfielder Jordan Libman (No. 83), Loyola Academy left-hander Neil Udelhofen (No. 119) and Glenbrook South third baseman Justin Machado (No. 219). The 2018 list was updated on July 24. New Trier right-hander Anthony Calarco is ranked No. 7.

Stick Nation | Boys Lacrosse Lake Forest: Midfielder Wes Janeck, a 2015 grad, has been named to the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Coaches Association (NILCA) All-America team. Janeck, a University of Maryland recruit, was the only Illinois players selected. During his senior season with the Scouts, he collected a team-high 131 groundballs. He also won a team-best 153 of 235 face-offs (65 percent). Janeck also was a star running back for LF’s football team, finishing with 1,347 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns. Lake Forest: Mac Altounian (class of 2016) will take his game to the next level. He has committed to Manhatten College. The middie finished last season with 20 goals and seven assists to go along with 44 groundballs. Loyola: Luca Lazzaretto (class of 2018) has made a verbal commitment to University of Denver. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Lazzaretto lines up at defender and long stick middie for the Ramblers.

Chip Shots | Summer Golf Tournaments

MAJGT Championship at the Den: Winnetka’s Michael Adler (class of 2017) was a top-five finisher at the Championship at the Den championship on Aug. 4-6 at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington — home course of the state Class 3A tourney. Adler shot 74-75-80 (229) to finish in a tie for fourth place in this 54-hole MidAmerican Junior Golf Tour event with Hinsdale’s Grant Labedz. Winnetka’s Andrew Huber (class of 2016) wound up in a tie for sixth place with a 231 (7183-77). Winnetka’s Connor Prassas (class of 2017) and Highland Park’s Noah Fishbein (class of 2016) shot 232s to share ninth place. Streamwood’s Michael Mattas took medalist honors with a 224.

Loyola Academy grad Peter Pujals, seen here during his senior season with the Ramblers, figures to have another big season at Holy Cross.

Between Innings | Softball Lake Forest Scouts: Tabbed as the “Comeback Kids,” the Lake Forest Scouts 14U travel softball team capped off its stellar season (combined fall and summer) with a 45-11-4 record. The Scouts wrapped things up by finishing in a tie for 13th place at the USSSA National Championship on Aug. 2 in Rockford. The team, which was led by LFHS center fielder Jon’nah Williams, also earned a bid to the NSA Nationals. They added runner-up finishes in the Algonquin Aces Tournament and Northbrook Tournament. Williams wound up hitting .529 while stealing 43 bases in 45 attempts. Shortstop Sydney Martens hit .413 and paced the team in RBIs with 54, while first baseman Grace Tirzmalis led the team in game-winning hits. This team also had a flair for the dramatic. Late comebacks were common with this team — especially in tournament play. Hannah Atchley and Elisa Nettesheim came up walk-off doubles in two of the tourneys. The Scouts featured two ace hurlers in Nettesheim (25-6 2.49 ERA) and Emma Olson (15-2 with a 2.85 ERA). Solid defense was turned in by second baseman Shannon Stowe, third baseman Ellie Pearson, left fielder Skye Miller, third baseman/ catcher Grace Tamisiea and catcher Julia Frauenheim. “We were certainly not, by any means, a dominant team as our record may indicate,” said

LF manager Neal Kahalnik, who was assisted by Sammie Bloomfield. “Most of our games were very close, but the kids found ways to win mostly with good pitching and defense and key hits late in games.”

Circling the Bases | Baseball Perfect Game Underclass All-American Games: Lake Bluff’s Tyler Esplin played in the 2015 Perfect Game Underclass All-American Games at the University of San Diego’s Cunningham Field earlier this week. Esplin (class of 2017), who attends IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, was one of only two Illinois players at the showcase. Esplin, a pitcher/third baseman, plays his summer ball with the Lakeside Legends. Earlier this summer, Esplin took part in the 2015 PG Junior National Showcase in Fort Myers, Florida along with Lake Forest High School’s Brad Czerniejewski (class of 2017). LFHS’s Cal Coughlin (class of 2016) participated in the 2015 PG National Showcase in Fort Myers. Perfect Game Great Lakes Showcase: Glenbrook South third baseman/pitcher Justin Machado (class of 2016) was one of the area standouts at this event, which was held at St. Charles North High School on Aug. 8-9. Machado plays his club baseball with the Longshots. Two New Trier players — pitchers Martin Duffy and Justin Romic — also had solid showings in the showcase. Both right-handers, who will be

Top Tier Baseball: Todd Fine, CEO and founder of Top Tier, coached the USA Baseball 12U team to a gold medal at the WBSC World Cup in Tainan, Taiwan earlier this month.

At the Next Level | College Baseball

Purdue University Calumet: Anthony Colosimo proved to be a defensive whiz for this NCAA Division II program. The Loyola Academy grad, a first baseman, didn’t commit an error during his two seasons with the Peregrines. In 64 starts, the senior wound up with 522 putouts and 31 assists. His 1.000 fielding percentage this past spring earned him a gold glove in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). With Colosimo manning first base, the Peregrines finished the 2015 season with a 23-16 record after winning only five games in 2014. At the plate, he batted .278 with six doubles and 23 RBIs. He had a .361 on-base percentage. He finished with nine multi-hit games.

At the Pro Level |

Minor League Baseball

Odgen Raptors: Lake Forest grad Chris Godinez pretty much is living up to expectations. Known for his high on-base percentage, the second baseman has been a tough out for this Los Angeles Dodgers Rookie League team. After 26 games and 78 at-bats, the former Bradley University standout is sporting a .422 OBP. His .244 batting average features 19 hits and 21 walks. Godinez (5-8, 185 pounds) has driven in 10 runs and swiped four bases.

Meanwhile, the Gichners — who live in Northbrook — were perfecting their flavors, which had expanded to include a Cosmo, the darling of martinis. They did “a ton” of focus groups, says Jackie, bringing their creation to offices and friend’s houses. the Dirty and the Cosmo, there’s the Citrus-Ginger, Cucumber and the Elderpear (natural pear, honey, and elderflower). Last year, Vitani’s Cucumber Martini took home the silver medal at the San Francisco International Spirits Competition. The Elderpear won bronze. “Our distributor, Heritage Wine Cellars, wanted to launch all five,” says Eric, “and so here we are with five flavors from day one.” Vitani can be found in over 50 select retailers — from Macy’s on State Street to Mariano’s. Each is packaged in a re-sealable aluminum bottle — perfect for summer days spent lounging in glass-adverse pools or boats. Word of warning: they’re 36-39 proof. But for habitual martini drinkers, that shouldn’t be an issue. I had my own focus group last weekend. After receiving a bottle of each type from the Gichners, I assembled a group of twentysomethings at my apartment, providing them with a martini glass filled with their favorite flavor. Upon trying it, two girls practically yelled: “Oh my God — it’s strong!” As you might have guessed, the consensus for buying this product in this age range was a resounding yes.
