Galati grew up in Northbrook. He attended Northwestern University, earning an undergraduate degree and a PhD before becoming a professor of performance studies there. FIRST WORD
The other Cubs’ turnaround is just as impressive F
ifteen minutes after the South Bend Cubs have finished off another opponent, Andrew Berlin walks from the owner’s suite down to the field. He picks up a black bat near home plate, close to a big bucket of Midwest League balls. One after another, he knocks fly balls into right field, as his two sons, Gavin and Cole, and a few other youngsters scurry and sometimes dive to catch them. “This is our happy place,” says Berlin, the ballpark just about empty after a Saturday-night sellout. The joys of ownership abound for the Glencoe resident — but they are accompanied by extremely hard work that has transformed

a once middling franchise and dilapidated stadium into the comeback story of the Single A minor league. Berlin — chairman and chief executive officer of Berlin Packaging, which brings in about $800 million a year in revenues — purchased the former Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate on Nov. 11, 2011 at 11:11 a.m. Since then, it would almost be easier to say what hasn’t changed at Four Winds Field. Renaming the former Stanley Coveleski Regional Field is one alteration (the Hall of Fame pitcher is now memorialized there with a statue created by RotblattAmrany of Highwood). New clubhouses, better food (including prime rib in the suites), and a $1.5 million performance center that features state-of-the-art batting cages open to fans are among the bigger ones. That former Jewish synagogue just beyond left field? It’s been renovated and sells team merchandise, such as handstitched hats. Historic Union Station that sits just beyond right field? Don’t be surprised if Berlin persuades Amtrak to stop there in its route from Chicago to drop off more fans.
Andrew Berlin | Illustration by Barry Blitt
The switch this season to the Cubs, who are enjoying their own rebirth(Berlin is also a limited partner in the major league franchise) has spurred yet another attendance record at the 8,000seat field, driven in part by the appearance of Cubs’ No. 1 draft choice Ian Happ and by endless promotions. On this night, a 40-inch flat-screen television is given away every inning. During the game, Berlin walks around the stadium, passing children playing in jets of water and throwing away empty cups. “I appreciate what you’ve done here. It looks great,” says one fan, unsolicited.
“We’re not done,” says Berlin, who’s mulling adding a second level of seats and developing the land he owns outside the stadium (“You get a Starbucks and an Apple store, and you’re good to go”). New mascot Stu (short for Studebaker, a car once made in South Bend) entertains children who enjoy the smell of his cotton-candy cologne. At the packed tiki bar in left field, parents watch their kids head down inflatable slides nearby, a setup that keeps both adults and youngsters happy. “Andrew!” yells a group of three men. They shake hands with the 50-something owner, chat a bit and return to their drinks. “I ran into those guys at Wrigley one day when I was wearing a South Bend Cubs shirt,” Berlin explains. “We’ve been best friends ever since.” Enjoy the weekend.

NEWS TEAM SPIRIT Cont. from PG 1 compete and you miss out on opportunities to get a really good education after high school.” Finitzo — who, after working with former WBBM-TV news anchor Bill Kurtis, received her first Peabody Award (in 1994) as a producer for The New Explorers, a PBS series profiling groundbreaking scientific explo-
ration — contacted two soccer coaches at Walter Payton College Prep in Chicago in an early stage of her research for “In the Game.” They encouraged her to contact Mietus at Kelly High School. “They told me, ‘Stan runs a great program there; you should call him,’ ” Finitzo recalls. “They were right. What a wonderful guy. He loves the community
and the kids. The first thing I sensed was his commitment to the kids at the school, not just the soccer kids. He’s a real presence there. He has a huge impact on lives there.” Had her parents not moved their family to another part of Chicagoland, Finitzo would have attended Kelly High School. She graduated f rom Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park and
studied film at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The three female soccer players in Finitzo’s documentary enrolled in junior colleges. All three dropped out. But one returned to a junior college, and the other two, Finitzo notes, also hope to resume their pursuits of a degree. “Resilient young women, all of them,” Finitzo says. “They have a lot of heart, a lot of spirit.
“I learned about their stories, their challenges, their uncertain futures after graduation, their hopes.” —Maria Finitzo

seriously flawed,” says Galati. “It starts on page 489 of the book, so it’s less than a third of the story. People think that it is a gigantic epic, and it’s true that while it covers three generations of the Trask family, it only takes place over a period of almost 20 years.” The film also eliminated a central character, Lee, the Chinese house man who cares for the Trask sons. “They gave all of his profound, philosophical observations to Julie Harris, who is playing this 16-year-old girl! It in no way corresponds to the complexity and density of Steinbeck’s original story.” Galati’s North Shore roots, Steppenwolf, and East of Eden are not the only impetus for him to return to Chicago. He still has family here and remains involved in Chicago theater, including the Goodman, where he was an associate director for 25 years. Additionally, the founders and some members of Looking Glass Theatre are former students. Eric Rosen, founder of About
Face Theatre and Artistic Director of the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, recalls “When I was 19, I saw The Grapes of Wrath on Broadway. It was as if I had discovered the language of theater and Frank spoke it beautifully. I did everything I could to study with him at Northwestern as a graduate student. Frank casts an enormous spell as a director, as a writer, as a teacher, and as a profound theorist of what theater could do.” The success of The Grapes of Wrath made the Steinbeck estate and publishers eager for Galati to adapt another book, and Steinbeck’s widow, Elaine, was an enthusiastic supporter. “I got to know her very well,” says Galati. “She was a great booster of Steppenwolf and she came to all of our openings in London, California, Chicago, and Broadway. “I’ve always loved Steinbeck. I’ve read all of his books, and East of Eden was always something that I had thought about doing for years, but I didn’t know how, so I just kept postponing it.”
One of the rewards of the project was working closely with the subjects. I learned about their stories, their challenges, their uncertain futures after graduation, their hopes. Establishing a relationship with each of them was an honor.” To Mietus, Finitzo became a steady, warm presence and a friend and another inspiring mentor for his Lady Trojans. Mietus sometimes held soccer practices that started at 5 a.m. Finitzo’s reaction to the early start time: “Perfect.” Finitzo and her tireless film crew would show up at 5 a.m., ready to roll. “One of the most positive people I’ve ever met,” Mietus says of Finitzo. “Getting the film funded was tough. Maria and her unbelievable staff, though, persevered. I wish every young kid had a mom like Maria, a role model like Maria. Our kids were so blessed to be around her for as long as they were. They noticed her incredible work ethic. She was, every day, a professional at the highest level.” Mietus, a native of Poland, arrived in the United States with his family at the age of nine. It was his mother’s idea to emigrate. Aniela, now 76 years old, worked. Worked hard. Worked multiple jobs. The more she worked, the more her son would be able to enjoy life as a high school stu-
dent-athlete and not have to worry about finding a job or two. Stan Mietus took classes and played soccer and other sports at … Kelly High School. Back then he called his mom, “My foundation, my inspiration.” He calls her that today. Stan Mietus was hired to coach soccer at his alma mater 21 years ago. “I was supposed to coach at Kelly for only one year,” he says. How many Kelly High School soccer players, past and present, are thankful Coach Mietus stuck around to teach, to lift spirits, to support, to encourage them to think big? Way too many to count. “That scene in the film, in the restaurant for Stan’s surprise birthday party, is the most moving one to me,” Finitzo, in her 26th year as a filmmaker, says. “It isn’t about soccer. It’s about the relationship Stan had established with his players. It’s about what he has meant to his players … as a coach and as a father figure. It’s the emotional climax of the film.” “In the Game” opens in the U.S. Aug. 22 (3 p.m.) at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. Finitzo and those featured in the documentary will be at the screenings Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. For ticket information, visit www.siskelfilmcenter. org/tickets or call (312) 846-2800.

Police issued 51 warnings to cyclists during the city’s recent 10-day bike safety campaign, all for not stopping at a stop sign or not stopping when required before entering a street or intersection. Cyclists who received their first warning were required to take an online safety class from the League of Illinois and provide proof of completion. “Cyclists can reach high speeds of 25 mph. They can cause accidents and a lot of injuries in our business district,” says Police Sgt. Chris O’Neill. “Two written warnings in six months could result in a $120 ticket for cyclists.” He observed one frequent behavior during the safety campaign: Cyclists disobeying red lights at St. Johns and Laurel Lake Forest avenues. he North Shore is wild. Old-growth forests are our neighbors. There are ravines, ponds, prairies, creeks — even a small, woodland branch of the Chicago River if you know where to look. Wild places have wild animals that get hungry. This is a constant concern to North Shore families that have little dogs and cats. A recent discussion with a wise and friendly woman who happens to be a veterinarian touched upon this subject. She said that residents around here should be alert. Wild predators can be surprisingly fast. And they’re a major issue after dark. You figure you’re way ahead of her. You’ve been interested in the spread of North Shore coyotes for years. They were once only in cowboy films. Now they’re here, and you find it kind of exciting when they yip and howl in the night nearby. On the other hand, you don’t want them eating pets, yours or anyone’s. Stupid with overconfidence, you say to the vet, “Sure, coyotes. Fully aware of ‘em. Say no more.” But she throws you a curve: “No,” she says, “I’m talking about owls.” Whoa. And it dawns on you. She’s right. You have a picture of a giant Great Horned Owl in a bird book. He’s holding a skewered skunk in curved talons. That skunk is puppy-sized and smells less appetizing. Such owls thrive on the North Shore. You’ve heard them outside your nighttime windows. They can see things moving down there in the dark, especially pets. Once again, you face the humbling reminder that you might think you know something. But you don’t know everything.

with a big knife. “The more delicate the tuna is, the more flavorful. Just like a Jewish deli with deli meats. When it’s thinly sliced you get more air, and with it more flavor.” Keating’s relationship to restaurateur Patrick O’Neill, owner of Little Ricky’s, is almost kindred. O’Neill was a young man serving at Pomodoro in Northbrook Court, one of the Keating’s family restaurants. He looked up to Keating’s father, Lee, who was a mentor. Before the patriarch and restaurateur passed away in 2014 after a courageous battle with ALS, Keating had packed his bags and moved back home from California to be with his family. He’s been with O’Neill ever since. “It’s been such an honor working with Patrick,” says Keating. “The Keatings and the O’Neills have been together forever. Only in the North Shore would that happen. You don’t find that anywhere else, actually.”

MULTIPLE LISTING SERVICE When you decide to list your home with a Realtor®, as opposed to listing it yourself, you open up a world of possibilities for the successful marketing of your property. When your Realtor® takes the listing, the first thing that will be done will be the Multiple Listing Service, or MLS. This doesn’t just show the home to the Realtors® in their office; it shows the home to every member of MLS. The way that the MLS listing benefits the seller is akin to the idea of “word of mouth”, except modernized to best utilize the opportunities of a techsavvy market: in a classic “word-of-mouth” scenario, one person tells two people, and then they, in turn, tell two people—only in this case, the numbers are much higher, because you’re dealing with cyberspace and your market is the whole internet! One listing goes to every agent and broker in the city and they in turn show it to their buyers. This opens up the possibility of a quick sale, and combined with the MLS information, can bring serious buyers to your door. To ensure a fast and stress-free closing, your two most powerful tools are the Multiple Listing Service and the knowledgeable Realtor® of your choice. For professional advice from an experienced Realtor, call Jean Wright at (847) 217-1906 or email at jwright@jeanwright.com

Socials Jennings Realty Celebrates 100 Years Photography by Larry Miller
Jennings Realty, Inc. — the fifthgeneration real estate investment and brokerage business in Evanston — celebrated its 100th anniversary at Avli Resaturant in Winnetka recently. Revelers enjoyed a night of food and drink as all raised a toast to the night’s guests of honor, patriarch Warren Jennings Peters. Fourthgeneration CEO Barbara Davis branched out in 2013 when Jennings On The Park was opened in Glencoe, a full-service real estate brokerage firm that caters to the unique needs of the downsizing 55+ marketplace.

World class Callahan already turning heads — like 30,000 spectators in London — on professional track circuit BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
I
n his first race as a professional runner last month, Peter Callahan, a 2009 North Shore Country Day School graduate, shot to the front of an elite field at the start of the 3000-meter race in a Diamond League track meet in London. The field included Mo Farah, a Great Britain great and the reigning Olympic and World champion in the 5000- and 10,000-meter events. The 30,000-plus spectators in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park came to see Farah win on July 24, not to see Callahan sprint. Callahan did not let up, pumping as hard as he could, treating each 100 meters in the distance test as a 100-meter dash. Callahan did exactly what he was told to do, what he was paid to do. The former NSCDS state champion, the former Princeton University NCAA indoor track champion, the two-time University of New Mexico All-American was in Farah’s home country to scoot and scurry as the race’s rabbit. Peter, alas, petered out. Race rabbits do that. Typical race rabbits are 1500-meter guys. Or 800meter specialists. To the right of Callahan’s name on the results sheet was “DNF,” short for Did Not Finish. “I approached it as a workout,” Callahan, an Evanston native, recalls. “It was a great experience, being out there in front of a huge crowd. I was there to help showcase Mo.” Mo Farah did not just win the 3000-meter race. He completed it in an electric 7:34.66, the worldleading time. Assists belong in the sport of track and field. Give an assist to the 6-foot-1, 155-pound Callahan, rookie pacesetter. Callahan, 24 years old and halfBelgian, stayed in Europe after his pro debut to race in a pair of 1500 races in … Belgium. All of his cousins on his mother Bic’s side live in Belgium. Nearly all of them showed up to root for their favorite pro runner for both races. Callahan, no longer a rabbit, won both, clocking a rapid and personal-best 3:37.88 in the second 1500. The most successful Raider in NSCDS

Callahan emerged as a two-time Capital One/CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-American, once at Princeton, once at New Mexico. He was named the Mountain West Men’s Outdoor Track and Field CoStudent-Athlete of the Year in 2015. Some 18 years ago, a firstgrader named Peter Callahan attended his first NSCDS class. Maybe he ran in the hallways, wide-open spaces for a wide-eyed tot who liked to fly. Maybe he was told to slow down, to stick to walking during school hours. Peter watched his older brothers play sports at the school in Winnetka. He eventually observed McHugh and how the man interacted with students as a coach, as an AD. The runner showed up at Raiders varsity track and field practices and listened to the varsity coach. The coach cared about the sport, the runner discovered. The runner ran hard for the coach and for the program. School records fell. A state record fell. The runner bowed for medals. Swish ’em, Dano
Sharp-shooting Danowski relentless in his drive to get better in all phases of the game BY KEVIN REITERMAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
Y
ou have your run-of-the-mill gym rat. And then you have your elite-level gym rat: Brandon Danowski. They differ. Radically. “Brandon is an absolute gym rat,” Loyola Academy head boys basketball coach Tom Livatino says. “If he’s got free time, he’s in the gym.” The veteran coach knows a thing or two — or three — about this three-point shooting whiz. Knows him like the old-fashioned pick and roll. Danowski, along with his parents and younger brother Brian, currently is visiting relatives in Poland. And Livatino has a hunch. “Gyms might not be as readily available in Poland as they are here (in the States), but I would bet Brandon has found a gym to play in over there,” says Livatino. “Guaranteed. “And I’m sure he’s brought his brother along with him.” Livatino is pretty much convinced that his senior star is on a working vacation. Leading up to his flight out of the country, it’s been a non-stop offseason for Danowski. In addition to playing with LA’s summer team, the 6-foot, 165-pound guard has attended team elite camps at Cornell, Yale and Brown. He played his club ball with highly regarded Chicago Lockdown. Danowski has this perpetual itch. He wants to get better — every single day. He’s been on his own personal “No Regrets” tour. Danowski used the summer to enhance his skills — shooting the three-ball — and fine-tune his defense, ball-handling and ability to create shots off the dribble. It’s all a part of the grand plan. “Playing Division I basketball is my goal,” Danowski says. Attracting attention usually is not a problem for him.
On Feb. 10, in Loyola’s game at Westchester St. Joseph, Danowski caught the eye of Nick Rocco. It’s a good eye to catch. Rocco not only is an assistant coach at St. Joe, but he also coaches the Chicago Lockdown 17U team. “Right after that game is when I recruited him,” says Rocco. Danowski liked what he heard. “I think we lost that game by eight, but I played well,” he says. On April 3, Danowski was swishing and dishing in the NY2LA Swish N’ Dish tournament in Milwaukee. Lockdown wound up winning the Silver Championship. “Playing with Lockdown has been very productive. We played well as a team,” says Danowski, who played for the Illinois Wolves in the previous offseason. “Coach Rocco stresses that. He wants you to move the ball around. Get the good shot.” Lockdown, based at the Score Sports Center in Willow Springs, finished its spring and summer sessions with a 33-13 record. Other team highlights included a Final Four berth in the NY2LA Extravaganza in Minneapolis, a runner-up finish in the NY2LA Invitational in Milwaukee and an Elite Eight finish in the Chicago Jam Fest in Bolingbrook. Danowski’s role on this team crystalized at the AAU National Championship in Louisville in late July. In a must-win pool match-up against the Wisconsin Playground, Lockdown trailed by three points with 7.5 seconds left in regulation. Rocco called a timeout and drew up a play. “There was no doubt who was going to take the last shot,” recalls

Rocco. Danowski didn’t disappoint. He drilled a three-pointer at buzzer to tie the game. Lockdown went on to win the game in overtime. “He’s got nerves of steel,” says Rocco. “It feels good knowing that he trusted me,” Danowski says. “I like taking the big shot. Win or lose, it’s on me.” Danowski, an all-conference pick who averaged 14.0 points per game for the 17-13 Ramblers, has some unfinished business as he heads into his final season at Loyola. He wore jersey No. 1. But the number “3” is what he’s best known for. The three-point shooting star fired up 228 shots from long range and aced 99 of them (43.4 percent) during the 2014-15 season. Getting stuck at 99? “Kind of upsetting,” Danowski says. “Needed just one more.” Still, he ended up in exclusive company. In Jack Morrissey territory. Morrissey, a four-year varsity player, is LA’s all-time in made three-pointers (331). He knocked down 119 as a senior and 112 as a junior. Morrissey continues to set up behind the three-point arc. Last winter, during his rookie season at Division II Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, he made a team-high 62 three-pointers. “Jack is a pretty tough act to follow,” says Livatino. “But Brandon is moving up the list.” Danowski learned a thing or two — or three — about shooting the long ball from Morrissey.
“I (still) talk to him a lot,” Danowski says. “He’s a role model. “He’s hard to guard,” Danowski adds. “He gets his shots off so fast. I’ve observed that about him. And that’s what I’ve tried to do.” Shooting the three is one thing with Danowski. And all of the other things? Equally important. “He’s going to make a lot of threes for us,” says Livatino. “But he’s more than just that. He had a good junior year, but I think he’s going to have an absolutely fabulous senior year. He’s a scorer, not just a shooter. He’s a complete player. And he’s really come into his own as a team and communicator.” His club coach saw the same thing. “I can’t speak enough about his leadership. Teammates saw his work ethic,” Rocco says. “Everyone had a role on our team, and everyone knew that I looked to Brandon to keep everyone in line. He was that guy.” And his defense? “He’s still got to improve there,” Livatino says. “He needs to take that to a higher level. He knows it.” Doing things at a high level is nothing new to the Danowski family. His parents, Andrew and Anna, grew up in Poland. And Andrew excelled in speed skating — qualifying but not competing (“because of certain circumstances,” says Brandon) in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. “I guess that’s where I get my quickness,” the LA guard says. But choosing basketball over speed skating? Enter No. 23, Michael Jordan. “When he came to the States, my dad fell in love with the Bulls and Jordan,” Brandon says. “I don’t skate. My dad wanted me to play basketball instead.”

Ex-Highland Park High School star excels for Kingfish — again — in Northwoods League BY KEVIN REITERMAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
A
ll summer long, it went like this. After each home game — win or lose — Brett Shimanovsky would walk into the Kenosha Kingfish clubhouse, plop down his glove, pick up a black Sharpie and join his fellow teammates in an autograph line behind the home-plate bleachers at historic Simmons Field. Not going anywhere for a while? A sellout crowd was the norm for this fan friendly franchise. Thus, the signing sessions could get lengthy. The only downside? “It keeps you away from the post-game meal,” the fun-loving Shimanovsky snickered. “But it’s worth it. I loved it.” It proved to be a signature summer for the Highland Park High School grad — and his fellow Kingfish. On Aug. 14, the second-year Kenosha team (48-24) wrapped up the best-of-three Northwoods League World Series by defeating host St. Cloud Rox 8-1. A night earlier, the Kingfish beat the Rox 6-4. Shimanovsky, a junior-to-be at St. Louis University, didn’t have a stellar postseason, but the left-handed reliever pitched brilliantly during the regular season. Besides winning a team title, his goal for the summer was simple: get the change-up working. “That’s what the entire summer was all about,” said Shimanovsky, who already owns a killer curve ball to go along with a sneaky fastball. “I need to add another pitch to my arsenal. I need that pitch to extend my innings.” And, he added, “My changeup has gotten so much better. It used to be that every change-up I threw ended up in the dirt. But now, I’m getting it over, and it’s got movement. I’m a perfectionist. The pitch is not where it needs to be. It’s hard getting there.” But his catcher, Jason Scholl (Glenbrook North and Eastern Illinois University), has seen
ended up with a 3.38 ERA. Pitching for the Kingfish has been a nice fit for Shimanovsky. Last summer — during his first stint with Kenosha — he went 3-1 with three saves to go along with a 2.84 ERA. In 25.1 innings, he allowed only 21 hits with 24 Ks and 11 walks. “Brett throws effortlessly off the mound,” said Scholl. “He challenges hitters, works quickly and pounds the strike zone.” Shimanovsky had some interesting moments on the mound this summer. On June 20, he got a chance to pitch against his high school catcher, Jason Goldstein, in a road game against the Madison Mallards. Goldstein, a two-time all-Big Ten catcher for the University of Illinois and draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, dug in against Shimanovsky and ripped a single up the middle. It was enough to cause Shimanovsky to shrug. The two were battery mates when HP advanced to the Elite Eight in 2012. “I would have been upset if he didn’t get a hit against me,” said Shimanovsky. “He caught me for three years. He knows what I throw. It’s the same stuff that I threw in high school. Just a little more advanced.” Notable: Goldstein, by the way, turned in a solid summer for Madison (43-28). He hit .323 with seven doubles, three home runs and 17 runs batted in. In a 2-1 Divisional playoff loss to Kenosha on Aug. 11, he went 1-for-3. … Scholl finished Highland Park High School grad Brett Shimanovsky delivers a pitch for the Kenosha Kingfish. SUNDAY BREAKFAST
Education guru gets an ‘A’ for effort
By Simon Murray
T
he hens are on strike. A notice on the table at the Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest informs us of the situation, which sounds dire. Due to a national egg shortage, Egg Harbor Café regretfully announces a “$1 temporary additional charge for dishes containing or substituting egg whites.” Yet the mood is unperturbed. A bald man in a plaid shirt bounces his knees like a little boy. A father in a suit sits across from his pigtail-wearing daughter. Soldiers stand around idly in their formal regalia. And Dr. William Griffin, like Melvin Udall in “As Good as It Gets,” orders the same thing he always orders — coffee with cream with corned beef hash and a side of fruit. Against all odds, there are still eggs left. “And over easy, right? Poached?” asks the waiter, unsure of Griffin’s egg order, which seems to be the only deviation. “Make it over easy today,” he replies. Griffin is enjoying his retirement. Tomorrow he’ll go golfing at the Deerpath Golf Course. On a recent trip, he backpacked across the Tetons with his partner of over 31 years, Ada, and his good friends. On weekends he takes the stage —acoustic guitar in hand — and sings in his rock band, Blind Goat. But today there are papers to grade. Depending on what your definition of retirement is, Griffin is either doing it right or doing
it very wrong. But what he isn’t doing is nothing. That’s because the retired businessman is also a professor at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, a full-time faculty member and business department coordinator at Triton College, and the chairman of the Board of Trustees at the College of Lake County. You might need a minute to let that soak in. I certainly did. At one point, Griffin was a general manager at Commonwealth Edison. He had recently acquired a master’s degree in business administration from DePaul University, after receiving an associate’s degree from the College of Lake County as a younger man. Griffin was giving a speech addressing environmental concerns to the Rotary Club of Waukegan, and in the audience, at the time, was the president of Lake County College. After the speech, the two got to talking. Griffin expressed his interest in coming back to his earliest alma mater to teach, and he said as much to the president. He said make an appointment and we’ll talk about it. Two weeks later, they hired him on the spot. So began a long-running interest in education. Griffin taught at CLC for 11 years before running for the school board and winning a seat in 1995. At one point he was a professor working

for the school, and in “the next moment, well, they were sort of working for me.” Having received a doctor of education degree from National Louis University in 2011, Griffin now teaches undergraduates, MBA students, and graduate students. He turns the classroom into a boardroom, making sure his students receive realistic experience from a corporate executive. “I’m trying to bring the pragmatic ideas to you that supple-

ment the academic information that you’re learning,” he says. “That, to me, is really providing a pathway.” His stud e n t s address him as Dr. Griffin. (The undergraduates at Tr i t o n College call him Dr. G.) “That is sort of deliberate. My motto is ‘ D r . Griffin is here to help you succeed,’” he says, adding, “That’s what I’m here to do.” Griffin has turned a second start into a satisfying career. He’s taught thousands of students, crediting Ada as an early influencer after watching her teach third grades in her hometown of Steven’s Point, Wis. “When I was in corporate America, do you know what the No. 1 thing the executives that I worked with wanted to do when they retired?” he asks me. “Play golf?” I ask. “Well, besides that,” he says laughing. “The number one thing they always said they wanted to do was to teach.” But how many of them can say
they’ve actually retooled their careers and began teaching? (And holding the position of chairman for the second-largest community college in the state to boot.) He may, in fact, be the only person to hold a position as chairman of one community college while simultaneously being a tenure-track professor at another (and the head of their business department). I don’t think Griffin knows how to say no. He recently acquiesced to Benedictine College, helping to teach their doctoral students, mostly online, working on getting their doctorate in educational leadership. He serves on Congressman Robert J. Dold's education advisory committee and is an advisor to Senator Mark Kirk on real estate issues in Illinois. Did I mention he’s a licensed real estate agent, too? Griffin is a broker with Griffith, Grant and Lackie, a real estate firm in town in Lake Forest and serves as the federal political coordinator for the National Association of Realtors, based in Washington, D.C. It’s a good thing he’s adept at switching hats. Education, politics, business — three separate fields. Like a three-sport athlete in high school, Dr. Griffin dabbles in all of them, bringing his passion and energy to each. “At this point in my life I can kind of select what I want to do,” he says. Except Griffin wants to have his cake, teach, sell real estate, enact policy and maybe eat it too.
