he legends that make up the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society’s popular “Local Legends” series come from all different walks of life. They’ve designed the world’s tallest buildings, won Grammy Awards, and traveled to the far side of the moon. And yet they all have one thing in common. “All of these Local Legends have had a national impact,” says Janice Hack, Executive Director of the Historical Society. “Even though they’re local because they’re from Lake Forest or Lake Bluff or have a strong connection to the area, they have a national and even an international impact.” Such is the case, again, this Continued on PG 12

espite public outcry against the controversial One Winnetka development, the Plan Commission voted 8-2 to approve a resolution recommending the planned development at its September 30 meeting. The decision brought to a conclusion nearly six months of public meetings. While numerous residents have objected to the size, scale and architecture of the six-story building throughout public comment period, Jan Bawden and Louise Holland were the only commissioners to vote against the resolution. Commissioner Jack Coladarci, who expressed his displeasure with the project at previous meetings, was absent
last night. Chair Tina Dalman noted at the outset that the focus of the meeting was on deliberations and not on public comment. “We have skewed very heavily to public comment,” Commissioner Dalman said, adding that at some point the commission needed to discuss the project. While Commissioner Bawden raised concerns that One Winnetka did not meet relevant portions of the village’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan, Village Attorney Peter Friedman clarified that a planned development is not required to satisfy every goal of the Comprehensive Plan. The Plan Commission is tasked with determining which goals and objectives of the Comprehensive Plan pertain to the development and whether they’ve been met, Fried-

man explained. While the Commission spent a large portion of the meeting discussing various details of the draft resolution, ultimately they approved three amendments to the resolution. Commissioner John Thomas noted that the resolution should state clearly that the trash and commercial delivery should be relocated to Lincoln Avenue to minimize the impact on residential neighborhoods. Trustee Carol Fessler sought clear language that would limit a fitness facility open to the public aimed at preserving The Community House as Winnetka’s primary fitness facility. Both of these amendments were approved by the commission, as well as a third amendment that clarified the planned development is consistent with the Com-

prehensive Plan. After Commissioner Chris Blum raised questions about the scale of the project and whether the Beaux Arts architectural style was harmonious with the village, the Plan Commission ultimately concluded it was up to personal interpretation. Commissioner Dalman noted that she thought the architecture was harmonious and the scale was consistent with the village. But Commissioner Holland expressed her displeasure with the project, noting that the developer had made few changes. “It is painful. There is nothing in these recommendations I can vote for,” she said. And while Commissioner Bawden expressed her view that the developer failed to demonst rate a need for t he
development, other commissioners disagreed. “I’ve voiced my opinion in favor of this project since the beginning,” said Commissioner Paul Dunn. “I am excited for quality development of this kind,” he added. “What is there is a disgrace to the community.” The Plan Commission is just one step in a lengthy process that includes review by both the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Design Review Board. These boards will simultaneously review the project and also make a recommendation to the Village Council which makes the final decision. The Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled to meet on November 16 at 7:30 p.m. and the Design Review Board is scheduled to meet on November 19.

Winnetka Seeks Help For Oct. 24 Haunted Trail Event
MARATHON Cont. from PG1 Chicago Half Marathon Sept. 27 where he took second in the 75-79 category. “I don’t know where that guy came from,” Gordon said. Next year at 80 he will be in a new bracket. “I’m not sure if there are five-year increments after that,” he added referring to the realization he is moving into the most senior group. Gordon said winning his age group is important to him and he is proud of the victories. He does Journeys and Chicago each year as well as picking out one or two more based on the experience they offer.
A
“You have to keep mentally and physically fit.” –Julian Gordon “I win time after time after time but not in Chicago. There I am a pace team leader so I can help other runners,” Gordon said. It presents a different challenge. “You have to finish within a minute of your time to stay a leader each year.” Pace groups are a key part of the Chicago Marathon and others, according to Paul Miller, the captain of the Nike+ Pace Team for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Miller said there will be more than 100 group leaders guiding over 3,000 of the race’s more than 40,000 runners to the time they hope to achieve. Some of the groups have more than one leader because of their size. There are 22 categories ranging from 3:00 to 5:45, according to the marathon’s website. “Julian (Gordon) is the perfect example of what we’re looking for,” Miller said. “We want people with accumulated running experience who are committed to helping others achieve their running goals. Julian (Gordon) fits that.” Gordon said his group could be as large as 50 with people ranging in age from 40 to one of his contemporaries. He gets them to the finish line in the desired clocking by keeping a close look at his watch maintaining an approximate pace of 11:45 per mile. “I carry a sign with the pace time on it,” Gordon said. “On the back I write the time we need to

(achieve) after each mile. If we’re a little behind I pick it up the next mile. If we’re ahead, I slow down a little. Each mile has a clock post.” He holds the sign aloft in one hand. Gordon is not a lifelong runner. He said he first got the idea of running a marathon in 1991 when his son was a graduate student at the University of Chicago. When his son decided to run the Chicago Marathon, Gordon decided to join him. “I had done some marathons,” Gordon said. “I thought we could train together and run the race together.” He said his son got hurt and could not run. Gordon decided to do it anyway and got hooked. Running four to five days a week, Gordon said he normally goes from his Lake Bluff home to the Lake Forest beach and back. About six to eight weeks before a marathon he starts to add longer runs to his regimen including one of at least 20 miles. Gordon said running is part of his philosophy to continue a meaningful life as he grows older.
“You have to keep mentally and physically fit,” Gordon said. After retiring from Abbott Laboratories after 25 years in 2005, Gordon keeps mentally fit by putting the Ph.D. he earned in biophysics from the University of London as the chief scientific officer of Inspirotec. He started that job at 75. “It’s a start up,” Gordon said. “We’re in clinicals now.” The company was founded by Prasanthi Gandhi of Glenview who met Gordon through a mutual contact. “I had a vision to do something for people with allergies and asthma to know what is in the air in their homes,” Gandhi said. “Julian (Gordon) makes sure it performs to expectations.” The device Gordon helped perfect determines which allergens are in the air in a persons’ home or another location so they can take the necessary steps for relief. “We turned it into a marketable product,” Gordon said. “We put the device in their home. They send it into the lab and we analyze it for allergens.”
pproximately 50 volunteers are needed for the Winnetka Park D i s t r i c t ’s ver y popular Haunted Trail event on Saturday, October 24. The time commitment is from 4:30 – 9:30 pm. Preferred age is High School age and older. Volunteers will be asked to dress up in costumes (provided), sell tickets, and help people around the trail. If interested, please contact Kevin Rutherford at (847) 716-1299. Additionally volunteers are needed for the family-friendly Pumpkins on the Beach on Friday, October 23 from 4:30 – 7:30 pm. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with carnival games, pumpkin decorating and friendly costumes characters. For more information contact Jen Gorczyca at (847) 501-6130.
LEGENDS Continued from PG 1 year, with Mark McMahon and his late father Franklin. A renowned artist-reporter, Franklin was an eyewitness to history. His drawings of the Emmett Till trial (portraying Till’s great uncle, Moses Wright, in the courtroom standing to wag a finger at the accused), and the space race of the 60s and 70s arrested the public’s attention. He also was prolific: over the course of his career he produced more than 8,000 drawings. Mark has followed in his father’s footsteps. An internationally renowned artist in his own right, Mark’s vibrant watercolors have documented everything from a NASA space shuttle launch featured at the Smithsonian to a 125 foot-long tile mural in Chicago depicting the Windy City. “They were there at these seminal points in history, witnessing it and documenting it,” says Lisa M. Frey, Director of Development of the Historical Society. Franklin and his wife—high school sweetheart Irene Leahy— eventually settled in Lake Forest. They’ve been a fixture of the community ever since. (Mark, who was born in Lake Forest, has murals in two Lake Forest area schools including Everett School in Lake Forest and Lake Forest High School.) Says Hack, “They are part of the community but they’re also an eye on the community and we have had a chance to incorporate their work into many of
our exhibits. “The McMahons are storytellers in their artwork, just like we’re storytellers at the Historical Society,” continues Hack. “I think we’re kind of kindred spirits in that regard.” Between 2000 and 2006, the Historical Society sponsored annual polo matches, something that Franklin captured in a drawing that has since been available on postcards at the museum. He is also featured in a current exhibit titled “West Side Stories: The History of West Lake Forest” and an ongoing series about the BMW Championship and the history of golf in the community. Local Legends debuted in 2010 with a standing-roomonly, 60 Minutes styled interview with astronaut James Lovell. On Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Gorton Community Center, Mark will be interviewed by award-winning journalist Bill Kurtis. In previous years, Local Legends have shared little known stories and never before revealed anecdotes that adds a level of intimacy unmatched by other events. “It’s more of an oral history than it is an award ceremony,” says Hack. “It’s really a chance to hear stories that you wouldn’t read in a book.” Local Legends with Mark McMahon (interviewed by Bill Kurtis) will take place Saturday, October 24, at 4 p.m. at the Gorton Community Center. Tickets are $75 each. To purchase tickets, visit lflbhistory.org, or call 847-234-5253.

Financially speaking, there are a few steps that all parties entering a real estate contract should take to ensure the smoothness of their path from home search and home listing to successful closing. For prospective buyers, these steps are especially crucial to a stress-free transaction. With the help of a certified, skilled REALTOR®, these steps will be easily undertaken and deliver the keys to your dream home! In a temperamental market, many lenders have become hesitant to underwrite loans for large sums of money. In such instances, pre-qualification for loans has become an essential home buying tool that benefits both the borrower and the lender. By obtaining loan qualification early and securing a mortgage lender, you are able to provide your Realtor® with a very clear idea of your home buying budget. By narrowing your home search to only the homes that are in your price range, you limit the range of your search and focus only on the homes that are smart choices for your finances and long-term goals. This, in turn, leads to an expedited closing, where the buyer and their Realtor® are assured not to run into the unexpected obstacle of being turned down for a loan at the last minute. By securing your loan before beginning your home search, not only do you have a more realistic picture of your financial capability, but you also ensure that your loan will perform as expected over time. For professional advice from an experienced Realtor, call Jean Wright at (847) 217-1906 or email at jwright@jeanwright.com

HOW MARRIAGE CAN INSPIRE FITNESS
A good number of these walkers appears to be couples: husband and wife who made a smart decision to start their days with some fresh air and exercise. If better physical fitness is what they’re after, research and experience say they’re on to something. Consider first a 2012 study of 58 women by the Michigan State University’s Department of Kinesiology, which found that women who cycled with virtual partners exercised for twice as long as those women who worked out alone. In addition, there was a noticeable decline in intent to exercise among those who cycled by themselves; those who exercised with a virtual partner had no decline in motivation. Years before that study, researchers from the Indiana University Department of Kinesiology found in a study of married couples who belonged to a gym that only 8 percent of the participants who exercised with their spouses quit compared to half of the participants who exercised independently of their spouses. I mulled this over with yet another cup of coffee, and called on local fitness professional Mary Parthe to explain how easy it is for couples – who may be at very different levels of physical fitness - to exercise together. She works out regularly with her boyfriend or biking through our neighbor- of five years Dan Falcon (who hood. many of the gym’s patrons. “We see families coming in together to work out and encouraging each other, and really doing something positive,” Parthe said. “And in our Rock Steady Boxing class (a non-contact fitness class for people with Parkinson’s disease which emphasizes gross motor movement, balance, core strength and rhythm in order to improve participants’ range of motion, flexibility, posture and gait), we have a lot of couples coming to class together even though only one partner has Parkinson’s disease. She didn’t hesitate for a second with her response. “Just say, ‘let’s go for a walk, let’s go work out together.’” If you’re not working out together, how do you and your spouse creatively carve out time together? Couples might go out for dinner, but it’s easy for people to get distracted by their phones and whatever else and forget about really being in the moment. In the gym, you can’t have a phone in your hand when the boxing gloves go on.” She said the same is true for

fired creations out of a big, beautiful pizza oven on the property. For both pizzas—inhouse and on-the-go—Carter and Co. make their dough from scratch, and use only the freshest ingredients (like Wisconsin cheeses) for their toppings and sauces. “A lot of the flavor comes from the heat and the smoke,” says Carter. “We definitely don’t cut any corners.” For the wizened pizza makers and those itching to give it a try at home for the first time, Carter has a word of advice. “If you’re cooking on a stone, make sure the stone is seasoned,” he says, which can be done by rubbing oil on it and letting that bake in—the way you would an old cast iron pan. “Because that will make the pizzas cook a little more evenly.” If you’re without a pizza oven or stone, don’t fret. For those, shall we say, more classically trained in the preparation of Bagel Bites or Ellio’s, a normal oven works fine. “Cook at a higher temperature,” says Carter, “you’re going to get nicer crust on the outside.” Temperance Beer Company is located at 2000 Dempster St in Evanston; call 847-864-1000 for more information. Ten Mile House is located at 1700 Central Street in Evanston; call 847905-0669 for reservations.

effort to a spouse, a parent, a friend. Otherwise it’s as if the statement didn’t exist, even though it clearly does. There’s a photographer on the North Shore who has a blog where he posts photos, an ongoing visual diary of a guy with an eye and a camera. Without the
blog, the photos would be invisible to the world. When you show your stuff, it could be great art or something far less. Doesn’t matter. Either way, you’re saying: Hey, I did this. I thought this. I saw this. You need to feel that there’s somebody out there who, whether
they’re impressed by your message or not, still says: yeah, I hear you. What’s the point of all this? Just that you’re not alone when you create something and you want somebody to take a look at it. Sometimes, you’re the one who does the creating. And sometimes,
you’re the one who receives it. Right now, you’re reading something that a guy typed out one morning last week because he saw the Springsteen quote and it got him thinking. The words would be meaningless unless somebody saw them. Somebody like you.

SOCIALS LYRIC OPERA OPENING NIGHT BALL Photography by Gabriel Grams
The world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago kicked-off its 61st season on the evening of September 26, a night hosted by the Women’s Board. The event began with red carpet arrivals outside of the Civic Opera House before the more than 3000 guests entered the theatre to view Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Immediately after the performance, guests were transported to the Hilton Chicago for the Opera Ball, where nearly 500 guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, and dancing to the music of the Stu Hirsh Orchestra.

SHE’S THE ‘CAMINATOR’ Savvy, stoic Frei set to put finishing touches on her solid tennis career at New Trier BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
A
girls doubles match, involving a pair of New Trier tennis players, ends. Sophomore Amia Ross and freshman Michelle Capone have some free time early in a recent weekend quad at Lake Forest High School’s West campus. They are asked to discuss one of their teammates, senior captain Cammy Frei. Ross lights up. Capone lights up. “We are Cammy Frei experts!” Ross shouts. “What do you want to know about her?” “What,” Capone chimes, “do you want to know about Cammy? We call her, ‘Caminator’.” You know that, right?” Ross and Capone are also Cammy Frei fans, huge Cammy Frei fans. Frei, in her second season as a team captain, is a fourth-year varsity netter this fall, striking winners in No. 1 singles matches. Two seasons ago Frei and partner Lily Schroeder (NTHS, ’14) finished third in doubles at the state meet — as a 9-16 seed. That pair dismissed higher seeds in successive (fourth, quarterfinal) rounds. Frei also qualified for state in doubles (with Kristie Woodbury, an NTHS ’13 graduate) as a freshman and in singles last fall. Frei is cool and stoic on a tennis court, a smooth and confident battler. Her court sense is savvy, her sense of humor delightfully sneaky. Frei’s typical reaction to one of her crowd-pleasing winners matches Frei’s typical reaction to an unforced error that lands inches wide: expressionless. “She shows no emotion on the court,” Capone says. “Amazing, that’s amazing.” “She plays,” Ross adds, “with the same look on her face, no matter what the score is in her match. You can’t look at her and tell if she’s winning or losing. That can be intimidating. Michelle and I admire that part of her game.” Frei’s family tree resembles the shape of an upright tennis court, with tennis balls weighing down its branches. Her father, Bob, a Princeton University graduate, played singles and doubles for
New Trier East tennis teams in the 1970s, earning all-state status four times. His best state finish: third place in singles, at the 1976 meet. Cammy’s uncle, Tom Frei (NTHS, ’83), teamed up with Bob Buerger to win the 1982 state doubles championship and joined Dave Gollob to win the ’83 state doubles championship. Her mother, Debbie, is an avid tennis player. And one of Cammy’s older sisters, Lauren, a Bucknell University graduate, played tennis for NT squads. “Everyone around me,” Frei says of her support group, referring to her family, her tennis coaches and her teammates. “They’ve pushed me, encouraged me to work hard and to stay with it. They’ve reminded me, ‘Some days, not everything is going to go your way.’ ” Oct. 3 was one of those days. The 5-foot-5 Frei, a Winnetkan, lost 6-2, 6-2 to Hinsdale Central junior Bella Lorenzini in windy, drizzly, chilly conditions at the Lake Forest Quad. No shame in that result. Lorenzini, undefeated in 2015, finished runner-up in singles at each of the last two state tennis meets. Frei, earlier in the season, nearly beat Barrington High School senior Michelle Linden, sixth at state in singles last fall. Linden escaped 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 (tiebreaker, played in lieu of a third set). “Cammy is a worker, a task-athand player,” Trevians coach Jerry Morse-Karzen says. “Solid player, with solid groundstrokes, solid volleys, solid serves. She always comes ready to play. Freshman year, she wasn’t imposing. But boy, she could play; she had all the shots. Fearless, too. I’ve never seen her get too tight or push a shot in a match. She takes her swings, likes to take her swings and go for winners. “The kids on the team certainly respect her,” he adds, “and I think she’ll become a better player [in her college years]. Right now she has quite a foundation.” Frei is a Tennis Recruiting Network four-star Class of 2016
Have you heard it? Ross and Capone belted a part of it at the Lake Forest Quad last weekend: “ ’Cause she’s [Frei is] gonna live forever; she’s a female prophetess.” Not too long ago, Capone, during a Frei singles match, heard Morse-Karzen applaud a Frei winner. Morse-Karzen then shouted, “Nice shot, Cammy!” Capone, channeling her inner Google search engine, looked right at her coach and queried, “Did you mean, ‘Nice shot, ‘Caminator’ ’?” Frei’s search for a college is ongoing. The former youth soccer player and swimmer (butterfly was her top stroke) wants to hit winners at the next level, maybe major in engineering. She likes math and science. She likes pancakes (plain or chocolate chip), too. Look for her to inhale those at the team breakfast she gets to organize as a team captain. Look also for an extended run from Frei in the singles draw at the state meet later this month. “I like to play offense, finish points,” Frei, still calm and still cool, says of her favorite — make that, only — game plan in tennis matches. “I don’t like playing defense.” Notable: New Trier went 2-1 at the Lake Forest High School Quad on Oct. 3. The Trevs lost 5-1 to reigning state champion Hinsdale Central in their opening dual and topped the hosts 5-1 and Deerfield High School 4-2. “It was really nice to emphasize the team concept,” NT tennis coach Jerry Morse-Karzen noted, adding all 23 varsity members played at least one match. NT’s Michelle Buyer/Tess Lubin won at No. 2 doubles in the dual with HC. Buyer and Amia Ross solved a No. CAN-DO CAMMY: Senior Cammy Frei of the Trevians prepares to loft a lob during the Lake Forest 1 duo from Deerfield in straight Quad. She’s a three-time state qualifier. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER sets. Other NT results included Caroline Christopher’s 6-2, 7-6 recruit, ranked 17th in the Great headed, brown-eyed Weasley on her British accent,” Ross says. triumph at No. 1 singles against Lakes region, 10th in Illinois. She twins, Fred and George. Frei atThat’s about the only knock on Deerfield; Natalie Kalter’s 6-3, 6-2 sits No. 3, behind Ross and tempts to imitate Percy Weasley’s Frei you’ll get from the Cammy win at No. 1 singles against Lake Capone, in “Harry Potter” char- voice during the trio’s occasional Frei experts/fans. They pay tribute Forest; and Lubin/Sophie Brown’s acter impersonations. Ross and talent show. to Frei through a parody song of 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles Capone like to mimic the red“Cammy could use a little work Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space.” against Lake Forest.

A DIAMOND IN A ROUGH LOSS
Marks makes his mark in Highland Park’s crazy and wild game against rival Deerfield BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
L
ucas Marks, who arguably had just played the best football game of his high school career, walked out of the locker room wearing — of all things — a black Pittsburgh Pirates hoodie. The one with the giant, goldengraved P in front. Well-worn. Sharp looking. Fit him to a … P. “It’s old,” Marks said. “Got some stains. But it’s comfy.” But it’s … Pittsburgh. P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R-G-H. Perplexing? Baffling? Unfathomable? “Yeah, especially since I’m a big Cubs fan,” confessed the Highland Park High School senior inside linebacker, with unbridled pride, knowing full well that the Cubs and Pirates were scheduled to play a game of humongous proportions — National League Wild Card Game — on Oct. 7. And yet, Marks’ timing, in an odd way, was … right on the mark. Fitting, even. Unexplainable — and oddballish — things tend to happen on rivalry night. Highland Park vs. Deerfield. Get ready for topsy-turvy. Get ready for bizarre. “When we play, you always know it’s going to be nuts. Crazy things are going to happen,” said Marks, following his team’s closer-than-the-score-indicates 28-14 setback to visiting Deerfield on Oct. 2 at Wolters Field. “And I’d say tonight lived up to that,” Marks added. The final three minutes and 36 seconds of the first half was pure lunacy. Undiluted madness. First, Deerfield’s Charlie Jones — common name, uncommon athletic ability — took a short pass in the left flat and raced into the end zone like he was driving a Corvette Stingray without a speed limit on historic Route 66. The junior speedster went 66 yards in

He put the Warriors (4-2, 2-0) ahead by two touchdowns with 8:24 left in the fourth quarter, when he caught an 18-yard strike from Deerfield quarterback Anthony Ranallo. Seven plays later, Jones struck again — on the defensive end — when he intercepted a pass and ran it back 67 yards to put Deerfield ahead 28-7. “He looked like he was shot out of a cannon (on a couple of those plays),” Horeni said. All in all, it was a solid showing by HP’s defense. The other leading tacklers were Joseph White (7), Samuel Gordon (6), Robert McCraren (6), Cristian Volpentesta (6), David Barrette (5) and Tucker Thompson (5). The Giants held Deerfield’s high-powered offense to 262 yards. Fisher got his yards (26-106), but he didn’t take over. “I thought we did a good job of executing the game plan,” said Marks. Horeni has liked what he’s seen from Marks. “He’s a quiet leader,” said the first-year head coach. “But he’s got good ball sense. SHE TOTALLY GETZ IT
Loyola senior standout possesses great instincts, ‘insane’ stickhandling abilities BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
A
field hockey referee, surprisingly, has never stopped action in a game to check Lindsay Getz’s stick for Velcro. Do not be surprised if it happens at a field hockey field near you. The Loyola Academy forward has this way, this knack, to make it appear a ball is stuck forever to her stick when she is advancing it and weaving her away through and around befuddled defenders. Add that glaring talent to her speed, to her knowledge of the game, to her strength and to her competitiveness, and you have a player who belongs on a college field hockey field. Now. “It’s insane,” Loyola Academy field hockey coach Annie Nimz says of Getz’s stickhandling abilities. “It’s amazing. It’s what really stands out for me, in addition to her speed, when I think of Lindsay as a player. When you see her maneuver the ball, it is truly how the sport was meant to be played. She is quick, precise.” She is prolific. The 5-foot-8 Getz, a tri-captain and Northfield resident, has scored 22 goals for the 10-7 Ramblers (10-4 in the Illinois High School Field Hockey Association Private League). She did not score in LA’s 2-1 defeat of host North Shore Country Day on Oct. 2. Both of the assists, though, came off her legal stick. Getz tallied four goals in a game this fall. Twice. Twice. She settled for a hat trick in another victory and a goal and a shootout goal in a 2-1 overtime win. “Lindsay, honestly, means everything to our team,” Ramblers junior midfielder/defender Gabby Paraccini, a Winnetkan, says. “She is a phenomenal and selfless player, a phenomenal teammate. She is calm when she plays, always maintaining her cool, but she’s also assertive. Her leadership … excellent. Lindsay tells us where to be, what to do. She watches out for everybody.” Getz entered Loyola Academy, back in 2012, thinking ice hockey would be her primary sport for four years. It attracted her to the school, the chance to deke defensemen out of their skates and net

a fine education along the way. Getz moved pucks for LA teams during her freshman and sophomore years. She advanced varsity
field hockey balls in the fall of 2012 and in the fall of ’13. She contracted the field hockey bug, big-time, before the winter of her
junior year and opted to commit to Windy City Field Hockey’s indoor season rather than to LA’s ice hockey season. She has been
“ailing” ever since. Getz helped Windy City’s U19 team place third at the National Club Challenge in Virginia last summer. “Katie Beach is an amazing coach,” Getz, an IHSFHA allstater in 2013 and an IHSFHA all-academic pick the past two seasons, says of Windy City’s owner/director/coach, a former USA Field Hockey National Team member. “She has helped me develop tremendously, in all aspects of field hockey — mentally, physically, skill-wise. At every practice I continue to learn something new. “I love the team dynamics of field hockey, the sport itself. I love playing field hockey or attending field hockey practice after school each day. Field hockey automatically makes my day a better one.” Getz recently made Shannon Soares’ day. Soares coaches women’s field hockey at Georgetown University. Getz verbally committed to the school and to Soares’ program. Getz and Getz’s college-ready skills got Soares’ full attention at a Field Hockey Festival in California last November. “I’ve visited the campus three times,” Getz says. “The coaches are intense, and the players there, what great role models, all of them. I look up to them, and I admire their skills, their personalities. I’m excited about getting the opportunity to be a part of the team.” What would thrill Getz and her current teammates: a Final Four state berth, a year after a state quarterfinal loss. Nimz guided Ramblers to a state runner-up finish in 2012 and a fourth-place state showing in ’13. Getz isn’t a 365/24/7 field hockey nut. Far from it. Her life off the field is full, selfless, admirable. She considers any day, as a volunteer at Misericordia Home in Chicago, a highlight in her week, better than the rush she gets from either scoring a clutch goal or dishing a key assist in a field hockey game. She jumps at the chances to commit her time to Loyola Academy’s Arrupe Service Program, tutoring chil-
dren for two to three hours or brightening the days of elderly folks for two to three hours. Her mother, Susan, worked for years on the business side of the medical industry. One of Lindsay Getz’s cousins is an emergency room nurse. Getz intends to enroll in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Georgetown. “I want to work in a hospital, to experience an exciting pace each day, to help people, to help fix things that are broken,” Getz says. “It’s so cool, the advances being made in the medical field.” Also cool: a Getz goal, a gamewinning goal, in the waning seconds of a dramatic win over Lake Forest Academy two seasons ago. From about eight yards out, Getz controlled a ball, got super creative and delivered with 3.2 seconds remaining. “She did this weird, lefty reverse scoop shot,” Nimz, still stunned, recalls. “Incredible. It was an incredible goal. That’s my favorite Lindsay Getz moment.” There’s some season left, big games remaining, for Getz to supplant that moment. Consider her a threat to do just that, in any game, at any moment. Coaches will watch. Teammates and spectators and referees will watch. No matter what happens, those closest to Getz will still get to enjoy Getz’s presence after the sequences of uncanny stickhandling, after the bullet-train-fast shots on goal, after the four-goal games. “Lindsay,” Paraccini says, “is nice, funny, smart. She exudes happiness.” Notable: Senior forward Jane Totaro and junior forward Brennan O’Malley scored the Ramblers’ goals in LA’s 2-1 defeat of host North Shore Country Day on Oct. 2. Senior Clare Fallon was the winning goalkeeper. … Senior Lindsay Getz, junior Gabby Paraccini, sophomore Claire Caffery and freshman Anya Kavanaugh struck the shootout goals in LA 2-1 OT decision over host St. Ignatius on Sept. 30. … Getz, Totaro and Fallon are serving as LA’s tri-captains this fall.

Lake Forest’s young — and extremely successful — golf team riding high after winning NSC Meet BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM
T
hey sat in go-karts, not in golf carts. Lake Forest High School’s boys golfers ditched their clubs and drove go-karts at K1 Speed in Buffalo Grove last week, a day after winning the North Suburban Conference Meet at Willow Glen Golf Club in North Chicago. Their coach, Jim Matheson, also wore a helmet, also raced around and around and around a track on Sept. 30. Some of the Scouts reached speeds near 30 mph. Some got rear-ended, jolted. “It was funny, seeing how competitive they are away from the golf course,” Matheson, in his 13th season behind the wheel of the varsity program, recalls. “There were a few accidents out there. “I was sore the next day.” Perhaps no other boys golf team in the state deserved a break from the links more than the LFHS crew did. Before edging runner-up Stevenson on a fifth-score tiebreaker — take a bow, sophomore Jed Thomas, for your 82, one shot better than Stevenson’s fifth Patriot — at the conference on Sept. 29, the Scouts had topped the fields at the Lake County Invitational at Shepherd’s Crook Golf Course in Zion on Aug. 24; the Wheeling Invite at Chevy Chase Golf Course on Sept. 19; the Highland Park Quad at Northmoor Country Club on Sept. 24; and the McDermand Invite at Lake Bluff Golf Club on Sept. 26. Thirty-four days, five titles. Lake Bluff Golf Club is Scouts sophomore Scott Frevert’s home course. The Lake Bluff resident and reigning NSC Meet medalist (73) lives two blocks from the course. Matheson remembers him as a fifthgrader at the club in the summer, hanging around golf pros on putting greens, leaving his clubs in a LBGC back room overnight, arriving before sunrises at LBGC. “Scott has played a lot of golf in his life,” Matheson says. “A lot. He’s a … golfer. He’s … just
good. He keeps the ball in play, has a smooth swing, has control. He’s really laid-back, goes with the flow. Scott doesn’t get too up, doesn’t get too down. Stays steady. You never have to worry about Scott overswinging.” Frevert is enjoying a sturdy fall season. His summer? Also memorable. The 6-footer, a lateseason varsity call-up last fall, shot 71-74 to win, by two strokes, the Illinois Player of the Year Championship (14-15 boys division) at Highlands of Elgin Golf Course on Aug. 10. He beat the IJGA Regional #5 field at Lake Bluff GC, carding a 71. He beat the IJGA Regional #6 field at Countryside Golf Club in Mundelein, carding a 76. Two days separated the regional tests in mid-June. His 73.86 stroke average ranked first in the IJGA Junior Boys division. “It’s competitive around here,” Frevert says, alluding to summer tournament golf and high school golf. “I like that. The guys [on the Scouts’ varsity team], we’re all competitive, and not just in golf. All of our fastest lap times, at that go-kart place, were within two seconds. We were excited about winning the NSC Meet, because that’s the fourth-most important meet of the season [behind Class 3A regional, sectional and state meets]. “We all know, if one of us is having a tough day, somebody will be there to pick that guy up. We respect each other. We have each guy’s back.” Connor Polender, another sophomore, is another consistent varsity golfer. He nipped Frevert on a one-hole playoff after each had shot a meet-best 73 at the Lake County Invite. Matheson’s boys of autumn shot a 301 — a this-is-not-a-typo 24 shots better than Stevenson’s and Highland Park High School’s runner-up-tying stroke total. Polender, a varsity tennis player in the spring, took fourth (teambest 73) at the Wheeling Invite. The young man loves green surfaces, thrives on them. “What an even-keeled kid,” Matheson says.
“It was a good break for us. “We’re young, and we’re hungry. Everybody is underestimating us. People out there are thinking, ‘Lake Forest is too young.’ You know what? Our young guys have a lot of game. We didn’t have our best day [at the NSC Meet], but we won. What mattered was the win. We find ways to win — that’s what I love about us. We’ve been doing that all season. We’re so deep.” Notable: Lake Forest High School was scheduled to vie for a sectional berth in the Class 3A Warren Regional at Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee on Oct. 6 (check DailyNorthShore.com). The Scouts shot a practice round at Elliot Golf Course in Rockford on Oct. 4. EGC is a Class 3A sectional venue. … LFHS finished third (320) at the Bruce Slovitt Trevian Invitational at Winnetka Golf Club on Oct. 3. Scores from junior Jason Folker (76, fourth-place tie), junior Elliot Georges (80), senior Alessandro Raganelli (81) and sophomore Scott Frevert (83) counted for the Scouts. Loyola Academy (307) and New Trier Blue (311) finished 1-2. … The Scouts claimed the NSC Meet in North Chicago last week behind the efforts of Frevert (73, medalist), sophomore Connor Polender (77, seventh place), Georges (79) and Folker (81) at Willow Glen Golf Club. … Scouts senior Max Rappeport shot a medalist round of 38 in LF’s 164-208 defeat of visiting Zion on Sept. 1. … Scouts boys golf coach Jim Matheson, on his sophomore-laden varsity, near the end of the Bruce Slovitt Trevian Invite on Oct. 3: “The sophomores are passionate about golf, always working hard, always playing hard. Nobody sees them as sophomores; I sure don’t. Tempting the palate is another serious hurdle. “On top of that, because of treatments, there’s also a loss of appetite.” Working with restaurant partners such as Maggiano’s (the first), Hub 51, Wildfire, The Rosebud, RPM Steak, and the Paris Club, White and her dedicated board of professionals are delivering meals to those undergoing cancer treatments; who, in turn, are excited to eat again. “We’ve gotten so many more requests over the past few months,” says White. Eventually she’s out the revolving door, smoothie in hand, making another delivery to a person in need. Visit culinarycare.org/cookoff to learn more or to purchase tickets to the Corporate Cook-Off on Saturday, October 17.
