Lake Forest Working For Amtrak Stop, Pedestrian Underpass

hen Rip Suster makes a commitment, he’s not messing around. He’s been married to his high school sweetheart, Sue, for more than 50 years. They have traveled the world and raised a family together. They also built a business together. Thirty-six years after he left a downtown accounting job for a temporary position at Sue’s new store, Rip and Sue are retiring from the daily management of Winnetka’s Village Carpets and Rugs. “It’s just time,” Sue said. “We are healthy, everything is good around us, and we are proud of our years together. But I like to eat Homer’s ice cream uninterrupted by a call to come back to the store. I like to sleep late.” With a new manager learning from their experience, business will continue uninterrupted at Village Carpets and Rugs. “It’s so important for a community to have anchor stores like this one,” explained Terry Dason, executive director at the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce. “They are destinations that people outside of Winnetka are aware of. AKE FOREST — A long hoped for Amtrak stop at the west Lake Forest train station may be getting closer to reality, while a pedestrian underpass to enhance passenger safety will require negotiations with all users of the tracks to come into existence. The Lake Forest City Council unanimously approved a $295,000 study to look at less expensive ways to build the underpass at its meeting March 7 at City Hall, but it appears the Amtrak stop may not be tied to the underpass as first thought. Highland Park Man Killed in Plane Crash Remembered By Julie Kemp Pick dailynorthshore.com

H

IGHLAND PARK–Dane Sheahen, 63 lived life to the fullest, and was looking forward to retirement when his plane crashed in Clermont, Florida on March 12. He and his friend, fellow pilot James Kos from Canute, Oklahoma were killed instantly. “Dad had just bought another plane, and had only been in Florida about three months,” said his 26-year-old son, Kyle Sheahen. “Flying was his passion, and he was an aircraft builder who was well known for being detail oriented.” The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. Sheahen had homes in Fort Sheridan, and in Spruce Creek, a fly-in community a few miles south of Daytona in

northeast Florida. Sheahen was president of Mutual True Value Hardware on Route 41 in Highland Park which is a fifth generation family business starting with his great grandfather in 1917. The original store was known as Mutual Coal and was located nearHighland Park High School Kyle said his dad began as a stock boy more than 40 years ago, and worked his way up to general manager. He later tore down the hardware store that his father built, and put in a new one on Route 41. “When Dad went to Florida for the winter to move into retirement he was finally happy to let the reigns go, and the family business has been in my hands now for awhile,” said Kyle. “We had a recent conversation about him retiring, and he said that I was far more advanced than he was at his age, and that I could

just figure everything out. He was my mentor and my best friend.” Kyle’s sister Kristen Sheahen works for Milwaukee Tools in Colorado and the threesome enjoyed a family reunion last week while they worked together at a Las Vegas hardware show. “Dad flew his own plane in

to meet us at the show, and he was so happy that we were all selling hardware together,” Kyle said. Sheahen grew up in Highland Park off of Ridge Road, but his family history goes much deeper. His family had a farm before he was even born. Kyle said there’s a seven foot wide sign in Sunset Woods Park that

been a big help to me, and my dad said if anything ever happened to him I could always go to Tony,” said Kyle. Close family friend Karen Schmid met Sheahen 20 years ago at the Stick & Rudder Club in Waukegan. “Dane will be greatly missed by all of us in the flying community,” she said. “It is a huge loss.” Schmidt said Dane and his bulldog Buddy were inseparable. She’s not sure where Buddy will call his new home, but suggested that inquiring minds visit Buddy’s Facebook page for updates at Buddy At Mutual Ace. As the family will be flying down to Florida soon, no funeral arrangements have been made at this time. Kyle said there would be services in the North Shore area, and information will be available at the hardware store.

Sheahen took care of his wife Sandy Brill Sheahen while she was fighting through ALS. Sadly, she lost her battle in July 2013. “Just recently Dad was talking about how Mom was the love of his life and how much he missed her,” said Kyle. “He had so much patience, and I know they’re together now.” “Dad’s been flooded with messages saying how he took people under his wing,” said Kyle. “He gave people opportunities when others wouldn’t in business and in his personal life. He drove people’s passion for flying and helped them succeed.” Sheahen’s best friend and “flying buddy” Tony Degrazia shared a hangar with him. “He’s

NEWS carpets Cont. from PG 1 these destinations there is a good possibility that they’ll stop for lunch and check out a new place that they drove past and noticed. In that way, our anchors help to create interest for new stores that are just starting out in Winnetka.” Rip and Sue Suster remember fondly when they were the new business leaders in town. Sue has established herself and her team of 10 female subcontractors in the custom rug market, and they joined the team at Village Carpets in the late 1970s. She bought out the owner in 1981, and called on her husband to help her run the store. “We always planned that it was a short term thing that we would work together,” Rip explained. But they started shopping the international markets, bringing styles to Chicago that were previously only available in New York, and they expanded Sue’s custom work to incorporate new technology. They were, so to speak, hooked. But that’s not to say the business wasn’t without its quirks. To

start with, their showroom was housed in an old grocery store; this was evident by the window ledges built to hold produce. “When Sue took over the store, the address was on Linden Avenue, which didn’t make any sense to anyone. It was only about two blocks that were called Linden Avenue before it switched to Green Bay Road, and it confused people who were trying to find us,” Rip said. “I took a clipboard door to door and got all the other owners to sign a petition, and we got the Village to change the name of our street.” Slowly but surely, they made the space their own. They hired local employees, and set aside a part of the showroom for business use. “I was determined to design rugs for individuals,” Sue said. “It was important for me to sit with clients, look them in the eye and listen. Too often people are overwhelmed with options in design and color, but people want to be reflected in the design they select for a particular space.”

Over the years, these clients have run the gamut. There was a dentist who requested a laughing, healthy tooth for his pediatric office; a gentleman who designed a delicate floral rug for the bedroom to please his wife as her chronic illness confined her to the bed; and a local family whose design incorporated landmarks from their worldwide travels alongside the dirty paw prints of a beloved family pet. Along the way Rip and Sue similarly mastered the delicate art of working as a couple. Rip credits their division of responsibility: Sue managed area rugs while worked in carpeting. Their staffs were similarly separate. Sue said their Winnetka home was a business-free zone, with no talk or clients or products allowed past the threshold. “When you have a marriage between two people, you have to accept the ways they do things and act with people. Let go of judging and remember that you love them the way they are,” she said.

Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth). “I’ve spoken to Congressman Dold or his office three times in the last six weeks,” Schoenheider said. “Bob Dold is very involved in the process. He said he will help in any way he can,” Schoenheider added after the meeting in an interview. Dold said he is excited about the idea of adding a Lake Forest stop and that it would be a boon

to the local business community. Though there are several stops in Wisconsin, the only stations in Illinois are in Glenview and Chicago’s Union Station. “The trains go by Lake County,” Dold said. “It will have a positive effect on industry and spur economic development. It will empower business in Lake County. There are a lot of people working in the area who would benefit from a stop there.”

amtrak Cont. from PG 1 dent of Engineering Robert Ells said initially the Amtrak stop was tied to the underpass. Mayor Donald Schoenheider said after the meeting that is not necessarily the case. Schoenheider said he has been in touch with Amtrak officials and has been encouraged that some trains between Milwaukee and Chicago could take on passengers in Lake Forest. He said he has enlisted the help of Rep.

Boating Back on at Park Avenue Beach BY contributor

IGHLAND PARK— The City and Park District have reached an agreement that will allow the continued use of powerboat access at Park Avenue Beach in 2016. All recreational activities, including sailing, fishing, kayaking, walking to the beach, power boating and jet skiing will continue to be available outside a security perimeter of the water treatment plant. City Councilman Tony Blumberg along with Park District Board of Commissioners President Scott Meyers, Park District Executive Director Liza McElroy and City Manager Ghida Neukirch worked with a group of residents to explore options that would provide for continued power boat access at Park Avenue Beach. The city and

park officials have developed a plan that has the city overseeing traffic management and parking, and the Park District continuing its role of overseeing recreational activities at the site. A one-year operating agreement will be drafted between the parties for the 2016 beach season. Starting in April, the Park District will make launch and parking passes available for sale. The North Shore Yacht Club will continue to operate from the south beach as well. At the conclusion of the 2016 boating season, the city and the Park District will review and evaluate the results of this plan, and will discuss options and opportunities for continued collaboration at Park Avenue Beach for the 2017 season and beyond. “We appreciate the collaboration, input and work between

the city, Park District and so many others over the last year to identify a solution that works for all,” said Mayor Nancy Rotering. “We are committed to providing full access to Park Avenue Beach and believe a viable option has been presented which strikes a balance between recreation and the safety of our water supply.” “We are delighted that the Park District, the city and our boating community were able to work together to find a solution for safe access for all Park Avenue Beach users,” said Meyers. “I would like to thank everyone who provided their thoughtful input and commitment over the past 16 months to allow power boating to continue at Park Avenue.” Submitted by the Park District of Highland Park and the City of Highland Park.

He said lamb and pork both come from the area and he does more with them than racks and chops. “We make sausage with the lamb,” Bumbaris said. “We do the same with pork. We also do braised lamb which is local.” Both Stegner and Bumbaris are chefs who have worked together for 30 years, the last 12 at Prairie Grass. While it can be a challenge to have two high quality chefs in the kitchen, they both said it works for them. “We bounce ideas off each other and come up with things,” Bumbaris said. “For us it works having a kitchen with two chefs. We know each other so well we come up with good ideas. It has worked for so long.” Bumbaris said their epicurean training is classic French. He said they use those skills to make things work in the Midwest. The name Prairie Grass has a special meaning too, according to Stegner. She said it comes from the source of their produce and meat—the prairie. “It’s a Midwest feel,” Stegner said. “It’s a lot of native food. There is a whole kind of feel to it.”

More than 320 parents, parents of alumni, faculty, and staff attended North Shore Country Day School’s Annual event, A Taste of NSCDS in mid-February. The evening included tasting stations of fresh, locally sourced foods by HandCut Food, music by the Upper School Jazz Ensemble, live and silent auction, and live games. Co-chaired by Benefit Board President Erica Conlon of Glencoe, Vice Presidents Kimberly Orput of Chicago, Irene Bradshaw of Glenview, and Sarah Geist Rosen of Highland Park, the event raised $300,000, exceeding the total raised in recent years. The funds raised will go toward the recently established Doar Fund, which provides scholarships for talented students who would otherwise not have the chance to experience all that NSCDS has to offer. nscds.org

Mortgage is the term collectively used by most people when they refer to a loan used to buy real estate. This can be misleading, in that these securities are not always mortgages, but deeds of trust. A true mortgage is a written contract that specifies how the property will be used as a term of security for the loan. In these contracts, the primary mortgage lender will usually have a first lien on the property, giving the lender priority over all other lien holders, with the only exception being a tax lien. In a true mortgage contract, all due taxes must be paid prior to closing and the mortgager (borrower and buyer of real estate) is required to pay into an escrow account specifically earmarked for taxes and insurance, thereby protecting the interests of the primary lender. In these contracts, however, the title of the property is in the name of the mortgager, not the lender; should the mortgager default on the loan, the lender (mortgagee) is required to foreclose on the property in court. If the court approves the action, the property is sold to the highest bidder. A deed of trust differs from a mortgage in that it gives the title to a neutral third party (trustee) who is partial to neither the interests of the borrower nor the lender. In these contracts, the lender is the beneficiary; should the borrower (trustor) default on the loan, the lender then asks the trustee (neutral third party) to foreclose on the property. Following the procedure set forth in the deed of trust and adhering to state laws and regulations, the trustee then forecloses on the property. Lenders prefer deeds of trusts over true mortgages for the provision of security in the event of a defaulted loan due to their quicker and less costly method of foreclosure. The ease and security of deeds of trust has not weakened the state of mortgage contracts. Mortgages are still the prevalent security instrument in many states whose laws and regulations favor the specifications of mortgage contracts. These states are called lien theory states. States whose legal regulations favor deeds of trust are referred to as title theory states. Other states have adapted their legal structures to an intermediary approach, which grants security to both the borrower and the lender in cases of default. The intermediary approach makes provisions for deeds of trust, but also requires the lender to provide a notice of foreclosure to the borrower prior to the physical repossession, allowing the borrower the opportunity to rectify the default. Before entering into any kind of real estate contract, discuss with both your Realtor® and your lender whether you live in a lien or title theory state, or if your state takes an intermediary approach. Though one never enters into a contract with the goal to default on the loan, it is important in today’s economy to be informed and well-prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Fast and flurry-ous New Trier Green comes out on top in action-packed state semifinal win BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com

T

he puck off the stick of Loyola Gold defenseman Ben Odle must have hissed as it neared New Trier Green goaltender Will Douthit. It was struck that hard. NT was up 2-1 in an AHAI state tournament semifinal earlier this week, time racing toward 0:00 on the clock in the third period. Douthit squeezed the fast puck. The puck then popped out of his glove, falling a few feet in front of him, Green and Gold players skating desperately to either clear it or stuff a rebound past Douthit at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville on March 14. “My heart skipped a beat,” Douthit (24 saves) would say later. Time expired. The puck stopped moving. Douthit’s ticker started to beat again. NT Green players then jumped and whooped and celebrated on ice, visions of United Center ice dancing in the heads. The 2-1 victory secured a state championship berth for New Trier Green at the home of the Chicago Blackhawks. Coach Bob Melton’s 55-10-1 crew will face Providence Catholic (56-10-1) on March 18 at 7 p.m. “I lost a couple of years tonight,” NT Green coach Bob Melton, tapping the middle of his chest to a passerby, said afterward, his face expressing a combination of relief and joy near the victors’ locker room. “Huge … Will’s last save was huge. He works hard, prepares well for games. He’s a competitor, a gamer.” Douthit, a rookie prep player, stopped shots for a Tier II Falcons hockey team last winter. He shared time between the pipes with sophomore Hayden Wieczorek this winter. Wieczorek produced an impressive record of 26-3-1 before Douthit (29-7) earned the starting nod for good near the end of the regular season. Douthit and Wieczorek. Luxury and luxury. “Our goalie,” NT Green senior captain Stephan Bazianos said, “played an unbelievable game tonight. Will won the game for us. Loyola played a great game. Compelling and riveting, guaranteed. The state semi on March 14 was Indy 500 fast and furious at times, MMA-tough at times. It did not deserve to be played on a sleepy Monday night, on a night when people still wanted that hour of sleep they had lost because of Daylight Saving Time on March 13. It deserved to be staged on a Friday night, no thoughts about getting up early the next day, rabid fans reacting raucously to hard, clean hits and smooth skills. Green-Gold, Part VII was scoreless after one period, scoreless after two periods and scoreless for the first seven minutes of the third period. The entertainment value throughout the scoring drought? Priceless. “Such a great rivalry,” Melton said. “That first goal, by Mulhern … such a relief.” Indeed. NT Green fans, it seemed, did not cheer immediately after Mulhern’s shot beat Trueman. Probably because they had to exhale first. Scouts unable to crack Barrington’s code BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com

V

ictoria “Tori” Soukup jumped to start celebrating the goal she had just scored in an AHAI state tournament semifinal last week. One of her Lake Forest Scouts hockey teammates, senior forward Nina Wilson, was nearby, poised to celebrate, too. Why not? The assist came from Wilson. When Soukup, a sophomore forward, returned to terra ice-a at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, she was stuck — to Wilson. Their helmet facemasks were interlocked. For a good 10 seconds. The moment made Scouts coach Liz Zorn look down, shake her head and laugh. A referee almost had to separate the pair of Scouts before the resumption of action on March 10. “It was like I was wearing braces and I couldn’t break f ree f rom something,” a smiling Soukup, helmet-free afterward, recounted. “I said to Nina, when we were stuck, ‘OK, you move that way, and then I’ll move this way.’ That had never happened to me.”

They managed to disconnect, no damage done to either helmet. Soukup’s goal, struck hard f rom the point, evened the score with Barrington at 1-1. Time left on the clock, in the first period: 2.5 seconds. Two periods later, Soukup and Wilson and the rest of the Scouts had to face a tough reality: their season fell one win short of a trip to United Center for a shot at the program’s second state championship in four seasons. Barrington, behind the resplendent play of AHAI allstate forwards Andrea Renner (goal, assist) and Nicole Guagliardo (goal, assist), defeated Lake Forest 4-2 and will face Loyola Academy (21-4-5) for the state title on March 18. Lake Forest (10-11-7) battled Barrington four times this winter, all losses. Only one (7-1, on Feb. 7) was a blowout. “ What a great group of individuals,” Zorn, standing just outside of the Scouts’ locker room, said of her fourth LF club. “ Those seniors, in the locker room … this is my ‘senior year,’ too. It

was tough, real tough, to go in that room after the game and see the looks on their faces. “I consider this season a success, very much so, even though our goal every year is to play at the United Center.” W ilson (goal), senior for ward Sheridan Weiss (assist) and forward Hannah Nelson (assist), a junior at Libertyville High School, connected for the Scouts’ final tally of 2015-16. It came in the first minute of the third period. Weiss’ younger sister, s o ph om o re d e f e n s e m a n Delaney Weiss, played relentless hockey in the attacking zone for the rest of the semi, striking three consecutive shots on goal in a torrid, thisseason-isn’t-over-yet stretch. Sheridan and Delaney. Delaney and Sheridan. It will be tough for Zorn in 2016-17, not being able to watch the Weiss sisters glide around together in Scouts games. They share a name. They have different games. “Delaney,” Zorn said, “is a powerhouse shooter, lethal.

Sheridan is a very good allaround athlete (field hockey and soccer, too), with natural instincts.” Notable: Lake Forest defeated Fenwick 4-2 in an AHAI state quarterfinal at Franklin Park Ice Arena on March 3. Backup Scouts goalie Amanda Peter, filling in for injured starter Corynn Salazar, made 21 saves, and Tori Soukup, Katie Wynn, Kyra Mangasarian and Sarah Newtown each scored a goal. Soukup and Delaney Weiss contributed two assists apiece. … Delaney Weiss, Soukup and Salazar, along with Lake Forest Academy’s MaryJane Alexander and Michaela Crowley, were named to the AHAI all-state team. … Soukup finished the season with a team-high 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists). Delaney Weiss was second in points (13 goals 10 assists). The other leaders were Mangasarian (9 goals, 8 assists), Nina Wilson (7 goals, 6 assists) and Hannah Matthews (3 goals, 10 assists).

SPORTS

Tess-‘Bloom’-bah! Loyola explodes for eight goals — four each by Dettling and Bloomer — to return to girls hockey state title game BY kevin reiterman, sports@northshoreweekend.com

T

he girl’s got her rituals. As she is apt to do, Tess Dettling walked into locker room No. 6 at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville empty handed. Before filing into the locker room with her teammates, the good-natured and very superstitious Loyola Academy junior dropped off her hockey sticks out in the hallway. She stacked them nicely against the wall right next to the doorway. It’s just that thing she does. Meanwhile, those sticks — especially the one she used in the game, the one with the white blade — should be checked … for burn marks. Her game stick was highly combustible — a weapon of mass destruction, if you will — in an AHAI state semifinal on March 10, when Loyola shocked the local hockey world by defeating archrival New Trier 8-2. Eight to two. On this particular night, Dettling was The Detonator. She came up with the so-called Texas hat trick — “Everything’s bigger in Texas,” right? — to help boomerang her team to the state championship game at United Center on March 18. LA (21-4-5) will face Barrington with the puck dropping at 4 p.m. Unbelievably, Dettling wasn’t necessarily the player of the game. Her four goals only matched the four scored by teammate Anne Bloomer. Bloomer was The Mad Bomber. “Those two were on fire,” said a stunned New Trier coach, Nelson Forsberg, adding that he could never remember a duo doing that to his team during his 10 years at the NT helm. “We’re fast, too. But their speed caught us a little off guard tonight,” Forsberg added, “In the past, we haven’t seen them this fast.” Bloomer, a sophomore all-stater, struck with power and positioning. The diminutive Dettling, a blur on the ice, charred the net on fastaction plays. Three of her goals came on breakaways. Unassisted jewels. Her dekes and dangles — done with breakneck speed — are daunting for the opposition.

TESS ‘4’ SUCCESS: Loyola Academy’s Tess Dettling reacts after scoring one of her four goals in her team’s 8-2 victory over New Trier in a state semifinal game. PHOTOGRAPHY BY linn stevens

New Trier couldn’t contain her. And Dettling, wearing pearl earrings in her postgame interviews, couldn’t contain her bigger-thanTexas smile. “We came into this game with the right mindset,” said the brighteyed Dettling. “And I think that gave me an extra jump in my step. “I use my speed to get to the net,” the three-time all-stater added. It helps to be Learjet fast. On her first goal, which came with 4:34 left in the first period, Dettling took control of the puck

near the center line, blasted her way down the left side and slapped a shot past NT goalie Hayden Snow to make 2-0. “We knew that we couldn’t be too complacent,” said Dettling, who also assisted on one of Bloomer’s goals. “Going into the locker room after the second period, we were still worried,” said LA head coach Conor Sedam, named 2016 AHAI Coach of the Year. “You can’t count anybody out. You especially can’t count out New Trier. They’ve got too much heart.”

Dettling’s second and third goals came in the second period to put LA in front 6-1 and trigger a totally unexpected running clock. A safe lead, right? Not exactly. Not in Dettling’s mind. Enter superstition No. 2. “In between the second and third quarters [when the two teams break for 10 minutes], I leave my gloves and my sticks on the bench. It’s just what I do,” said Dettling. “If I don’t or if I forget,” No. 21 added, “then the game might not go well.”

No worries. For good measure, Dettling tallied her fourth — and her team’s eighth — goal of the game with 3:22 left in regulation. Dettling heads to the state final with nine goals and seven assists on the season. So far, she’s had good fortune on United Center ice. In fact, she will be going for a United Center hat trick. Two years ago, she scored one of LA’s two goals in a 3-2 overtime loss to New Trier. Last year, she tallied a goal in a 4-3 setback to Latin School.

Meanwhile, Bloomer, a twotime all-stater, has racked up 16 goals and four assists this season for Loyola. “We were pretty hyped for this game,” said No. 75, who punched in three of her goals in the opening period while she added an assist in the period two. “And once we got a couple of quick goals, you could feel the momentum shift our way.” By the time she scored her fourth goal, the thrill was gone. “No need to celebrate then. No need to go crazy,” said Bloomer, who couldn’t recall ever scoring four goals in one game. “Besides we try not to get too high or too low in the game.” And yet, she was a little shocked by her team’s Crazy Eight. “You don’t expect anything like that in a game of this magnitude,” Bloomer said. Also, you don’t expect this: LA junior all-state forward Valerie Caldwell finished the game with zero goals and zero assists. For the season, she has 34 goals and 12 assists for a team-best 47 points. “For us to score eight times and for her not to score,” said Bloomer. “That’s pretty uncommon, I’d say.” Caldwell came up with her own Texas hat trick in a state quarterfinal win over Evanston 9-1 on Feb. 11. Teammate Caty Cusick scored twice, while LA’s other goals were scored by Bloomer, Meredith Touhy and Bridget Falkenhayn. Dettling, Touhy and Bridget Falkenhayn had two assists apiece. The other assists were credited to Maggie Cusick and Charlott Langill. Goalie Tianna Lavalle had 17 saves. Notable: In addition to Bloomer, Caldwell and Dettling, LA’s other all-staters include senior forward Elizabeth Wright (11 goals, 13 assists) and senior defenseman Maggie Cusick (2 goals, 5 assists). … This will be LA’s seventh trip to the state game since 2004. … The last time LA won state? 2004. … LA finished the Metro League with an 18-3-5 record. The team went 1-1 in the Scholastic Cup tournament, falling to Upper Fox Valley 4-1 in the final.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Life is going swimmingly—in and out of the pool—for local coach By BILL MCLEAN

A

ndrea Jane “AJ” Block, a high school swimming coach and one of the best masters swimmers in the world, is near a body of water on this day, mid-morning. Water is her favorite milieu away from home. Water is her lifeblood. The 54-year-old appears to be ready and eager to swim for miles against anybody.

The body of water on this day is a small one. The water is in a glass on a table at Max and Benny’s in Northbrook. The most animated patron in the restaurant is Block, 54 years old going on 27, going on 26 tomorrow. “I have street cred!” the Highland Park High School varsity girls swimming coach shouts and smiles, alluding to her commitment to training diligently and to her sustained success at masters swimming meets since early 1999. “When I coach, I get to use the present tense. I know what is current in the sport, what is evolving. Training concepts change. Training techniques change. I’m a student of the sport, constantly, and I get to share knowledge with my girls [at HPHS] and with the kids I teach privately [at Lincolnshire Swim Club].” Later, after ordering coffee and fried matzoh for breakfast, Block’s eyes well up. Happy, proud tears make her blink. More water. She can’t help it. Some faucets are hard to control. She had brought up the topic of her three children, ages 25 (Sam), Molly (23) and 21 (Nate). Family means the world to the 2006 masters world champion in the 100-meter butterfly. Thanksgiving dinners at her childhood home in Flint, Michigan, hosted by parents Melvyn and Bette, are gargantuan feasts, 55 people now, gobbling up turkey in a heated, three-car garage. All the trimmings? They are never far from the hedge trimmer. Block, a Deerfield resident, stepped down from her client services position with the Chicago Bulls when Sam was born in November 1990. Motherhood first,

dynasty-in-the-making a distant second. The Bulls would win the NBA championship in 1991 and five more titles in the next seven years. Block and her husband, Peter, were the parents of three in early 1999, the year AJ joined a swim club for adults and trained at night in Deerfield High School’s pool. Initially the former AllAmerican (honorable mention) swimmer at Carman High School in Flint and captain of the University of Michigan women’s swimming team had no intention of becoming a highly competitive swimmer all over again. The plan was to put the kids to bed, swim laps, shop for groceries after practice. “I loved shopping for food late at night,” Block, a strong butterflyer and a member of COHO’s masters swimming club in Deerfield, says. “Nobody else was around, though it wasn’t the best time to shop for produce. I got into a routine, and my times weren’t that much slower than when I swam at Michigan. I’m competitive. I ended up racing in meets. I didn’t think I’d race that much. Now, I can’t stop swimming, cant’ stop racing. I love competing.” Some five years after dipping her toe and the rest of her frame into chlorinated bodies of water for another tenure of motoring for medals, Block touched first in the 100meter butterfly (1:08.77) at a Masters World Meet in 2006. Her time in the event was a meet record. Before receiving her gold prize during the medals ceremony, it hit her that she had accomplished something remarkable when she looked up and saw two flags from other countries under the United States of America flag. A name, Jack Nelson, must have coursed

swimmers these days, and she does that with her boundless, genuine enthusiasm and her results at masters meets. She set a US Masters National record (3000-yard swim, 45-49 age group) in 2009 and swam a leg on four world-record masters relays in 2015. Block and her mixed relay mates competed in the 200-239 (collective age) division. The eldest statesperson in the quartet? The 5-foot-7 Block, the butterfly specialist, the one with the “ajfly” at the beginning of her email address. “Some people look at that and think I’m a pilot,” Block says. Her current coach, a man named Mike, traveled to Florida recently because he moved there. Block calls him “Coach Mike.” Coach Mike calls Block “Grasshopper.” David Carradine’s character, a Shaolin priest named Kwai Chang Caine, received that nickname from Master Po in the “Kung Fu” television series in the 1970s. Block texts and calls Coach Mike often, usually before and after races at big meets. He is another mentor and friend and motivator in Block’s swimming life. Another Jack Nelson. “He gives me great coaching ideas, and he’s one of the most positive people I know,” Block says. “He spins everything — everything — in a positive direction. Such an influential man, Coach Mike. He’s also why I got into coaching. I’m like a teenager all over again, always excited to communicate with my coach about anything that has to do with swimming. Swimming, I like to stress to my Andrea Jane Block | Illustration by Barry Blitt m i n g , swimmers, isn’t always about the recalls. “That time you swim in a race; so through her mind during the 1976 Summer Games in meant so much, hearing much of it is about the time you ceremony. Nelson, who died in Montreal. something like that from a well- have as a teammate … the time 2014, had coached Block when “He told me, ‘You have the known coach like Jack. He’s why you spend on bus rides to meets, Block trained in Fort Lauder- talent to succeed in this sport. I got into coaching. What a the time you spend with teamdale, Florida, in the middle of Make sure you give it your all,’ great man, a great coach. He mates in between sets at pracher prep career in the late 1970s. ” Block, the Fitness Chair of the called everybody ‘Horse’. He tices, as a member of a relay. Fun He coached the United States’ Illinois Masters Swimming As- liked to say, ‘Dig deep, deep, memories.” Olympic gold-medal women’s sociation and a board member deep.’ He was super inspiring.” AJ Block, water wonder, 400-meter freestyle relay at the of United States Masters SwimBlock gets to inspire young creates them.
