Betts: Still Fashionable After 40 Years By JULIE KEMP PICK dailynorthshore.com

IGHLAND PARK—Bett Barnett always has had an eye for fashion, and this became apparent at a very young age. “It started with my paper dolls and cutouts,” said Barnett, whose eponymous women’s clothing store turns 40 this year. “I didn’t like the outfits shown in the books, so I made my own patterns and learned how to sew.” That take charge attitude helped Barnett launch Bett’s Boutique right after she graduated from the University of Illinois. While visiting her college roommate in Highland Park, Barnett was offered a job as a designer for a clothing boutique. The deal fell through, so she decided to open a business herself. “Highland Park was amazingly supportive at the beginning,” said Barnett. “I had only optimism and no fear.” Her first store, originally named Bett’s Leather, was located in a courtyard near the Highland Park Theater in 1976. From there she moved to Sheridan Road in the early ’80s, and then Bett’s moved to its current address at 678 Central Avenue in the mid-’80s. Barnett often advises young people

AKE FOREST/LAKE BLUFF — The financial crisis in North Chicago School District 187 is years away from a direct impact on neighboring communities, but conversations are starting to occur about what to do. One thing is certain: District 187 will run out of money by 2020 if the state stops providing special aid, which it has committed to doing only up through the 2015-16 school year, according to District 187 CEO Ben Martindale. After that, no one knows what will happen. “This is uncharted territory,” said Lake Bluff Village President Kathleen O’Hara, who spent 36 years at Lake Bluff Middle Continued on PG 12

Born and raised in Evanston, I attended Loyola Academy followed by four years at Marquette University, where I majored in Economics. After graduating in 2009, I moved back to Chicago to begin working in the commodity markets. Having witnessed 3 generations of my family on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade I wanted to experience it’s fast pace and excitement. With the inevitable closing of the trading floor I decided to transition into an equally exciting industry, real estate.

Each year, League members commit thousands of volunteer hours to improving the community. In particular, they focus on advanci n g e m p l oy m e n t a n d supporting families for those in need across Chicago’s northern suburbs. Founded in 1924 as the Junior League of Evanston, JLE-NS now has approximately 350 active and sustaining members. who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to volunteering. On Friday, May 6, JLE-NS will sponsor the 2016 Designer Kitchens of the North Shore Kitchen Tour. In its 6th year, the Kitchen Tour raises significant revenue to fund its important programs. “We chose specific kitchens that have been renovated in the last five years,” explains chair Melissa Frick, who is organizing the event with subcommittee chairs Corey Marchetti, Grace Flatt, and Karen O’ Grady. “We’ve also selected kitchens with varied design elements—not all of the kitchens are white this year.” Tour attendees are asked to pick up their guidebooks, which serve as the ticket to to the event, at the Winnetka Community House. “A unique aspect of this tour is that guests will

have the opportunity to speak with the kitchen designers themselves as they tour the homes,” adds Frick. “It’s a great chance to be inspired and pick the brains of the design experts themselves.” The home tour features kitchens from Glencoe to Evanston, a 15-minute drive f rom end-to-end. “ We’re hoping for a beautiful day where our guests can take in the beauty of these special kitchens on the North Shore,” Frick says. NEWS BETTS Cont. from PG 1 about going into the fashion business. “I look at young women who want to start a boutique. I think many people want to start big and there’s a lot of value in starting small and not taking unnecessary risks,” she said. Barnett was one of the first people to design dresses, vests and jackets out of supple leathers. In the ’70s, she hired Russian Jewish seamstresses who didn’t speak a word of English and trained them. Soon Barnett was featured in Chicago Magazine for making down-filled leather coats. Barnett still has a love for leather and suede, and she keeps many items made with these materials in stock, including bags, vests, jackets, and ponchos. She noted that fringe has cycled back into style. Other looks that have come, gone and come back include flared jeans and Bohemian-style clothing. Barnett has traveled to trade shows throughout the U.S. and Canada, but one of her most memor able moments occurred in Paris. “I was in Paris on a Fashion Tour chaperoning students from a fashion design school where I lectured, when I met the famous designer Yves St. Laurent,” she said. “En route to his Atelier [studio] I met another chaperone, Virginia Collins, who was then director of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce. She signed me up as a member on the spot. Thirty-five years as a chamber member, plus many years as a board member and officer of the Chamber of Commerce may not be unique, but being recruited in Paris – so fashionably appropriate.” Barnett’s expertise also brought her to Singapore about eight years ago, as a representative for Southeast Asia Fashion Week, where she met people from all over the world. She explained that many of the designers were backed by their governments, so she had to go through “lots of red tape,” and the high-end styles were difficult to import. Barnett appreciates the city’s support of the business community, as well as her loyal customers. “My customers feel like they have an ownership, and they feel like it’s their business. Many grew
up where their mothers took them to Bett’s as kids. At times I have three generations of shoppers.” The younger generation led to the 2007 creation of the “daughter store,” B2 Contemporary. “Bett’s is classic, and B2 is geared toward younger customers for trendy and faster moving fashion,” she explained. Many of her customers shop at both stores under the same roof. In addition to loyal clientele, Barnett is grateful for her many dedicated employees; especially the two women who have been by her side for 30 plus years, Barbara Allen and Lois Rosen. Barnett also was instrumental in bringing Fashion Week to Highland Park, which is very dear to her heart. “In 2008 we developed Fashion Week to showcase the businesses in Highland Park and how we interpret the fashion trends for our customers,” she said. “Now we tie it to charities. Sandy McClaren has opened the Highland Park Bank and Trust to house the show with over 20 participating businesses. It showcases the strength of the community, which is really important.” Barnett created Fabulous Fashion Fridays a few months ago to partner with other businesses in the community as a cross promotion. “We’ll take a mannequin over to their store and bring coupons, or they’ll come into our store,” said Barnett. “I support them and they support me. We’re all in the style business whether it’s a salon or any business.” In addition, Bett’s also hosts many designer trunk shows. On April 6, travel wear clothing from Simpli will be on display, and at the end of the month on April 28 Lisette’s collection of comfortable, washable pants as shown on the “Today Show” will be available at the store. In honor of her 40th anniversary celebration, Bett’s will have a Retro Weekend August 4-6. “We’ll have a reunion where customers will bring in anything that I made in leather or suede, and they’ll receive a gift certificate toward a new purchase,” Barnett said. The kick-off party will begin on August 4, and anyone who can still fit into their outfit is encouraged to wear it.
SCHOOL Cont. from PG 1 School including 19 as principal. “Nobody knows what could happen. For anyone to say anything more is reckless.” As people become aware of the dwindling treasury in District 187, O’Hara said school and municipal officials are starting to talk to each other about finding a sustainable solution for North Chicago before that district’s lack of money impacts surrounding communities and beyond. “This is not just a problem for Lake Bluff and Lake Forest,” O’Hara said. “It involves all of Lake County, the state and even federal officials because of the (Navy) base. We are aware of it and we are starting to talk about it.” O’Hara said there is no committee of area officials talking about solutions but she said that is a possibility in the future. North Chicago’s schools first felt a financial squeeze more than 20 years ago when the federal government cut back the money it gave the district for the children of personnel living at Naval Station Great Lakes, according to O’Hara. The base pays no property taxes. Things continued to slide, culminating in a takeover four years ago by the Illinois State Board of Education, according to Martindale. The state removed the elected school
board and put Martindale in charge. A board appointed by the state oversees him. Martindale said that after he appeared before the Illinois General Assembly, the legislature approved $4.6 million for the 2014-15 term and another $5.6 million for the current school year but no more will be forthcoming. He said the lack of a state budget since June and political bickering between elected officials are partly to blame. “That kind of support is not going to be happening anymore, not with the new superintendent and not with this governor,” Martindale said, referring to Tony Smith, the state superintendent of education, and Gov. Bruce Rauner. Lake Forest High School District 115 Superintendent Michael Simeck said the lack of a state budget is one of the things that must be remedied to keep District 187 from insolvency. “With so many unknowns at the state level and a lack of a state budget in particular, there are no definitive long-term solutions for financially strapped school districts across the state of which North Chicago is but one,” Simeck said in an email responding to questions. There is currently a bill pending in the legislature that will help, said state Sen. Terry
Link (D-Waukegan), whose district includes North Chicago. He said it would restructure the way state education money is apportioned throughout Illinois. Martindale said the proposed legislation would help districts like 187, which are property tax poor. The bill has not advanced out of committee, according to state Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield), whose district includes Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. She said the proposed legislation gives more state aid to property-poor districts such as 187 at the expense of propertyrich areas like most of the North Shore. “The bill has not moved,” Morrison said. “We’ve been trying to find a solution to school funding for three years.” Martindale sees the bill as one of the few lifelines District 187 has left. “That bill will solve our problem,” Martindale said. “If that doesn’t happen and we don’t get any help we’ll be out of money by 2020 with no capacity to borrow.” Simeck said Martindale and the other people working with the North Chicago schools have done a good job keeping it afloat. He said he wants the state to keep helping. “The state appointed executive director (Martindale) and appointed board have done yeoman’s work to stabilize the
district financially and academically,” Simeck said in an email. “I believe the state should stay the course in its support for District 187.” One solution is the dissolution of District 187 into neighboring districts, according to Martindale, Link and Roycealee Wood, regional superintendent of schools based in Grayslake. O’Hara said no district in Illinois has ever dissolved before leaving a list of unanswered questions. If District 187 is dissolved, North Chicago students will continue to attend school in the same buildings, according to Wood. Separate neighboring districts will administer different North Chicago schools. Funding would come from a combination of the existing tax base in the new community and the part of North Chicago that is absorbed, according to Wood. The surrounding districts would also take on the existing District 187 debt, according to Link. The district currently owes $35.7 million, according to Morrison. “The debt follows the children,” Martindale said. Wood stressed dissolution is only one option and not the first choice. She said the key is finding a sustainable solution to the long-term problem. She too said it is time to start talking about it. “We feel we need to inform our residents as information becomes available how collectively we will work a long-term, sustainable solution to maintaining a viable school district in North Chicago.” Those districts are most likely Lake Bluff District 65, Lake Forest High School District 115, Warren Township High School District 121 in Gurnee, Woodland District 50 in Gurnee, Oak Grove School District 68 encompassing Green Oaks and Community High School District 128 serving Libertyville and Vernon Hills High Schools. The wealthier school districts surrounding North Chicago will be paying for the remedy whether it is through dissolution or passage of the pending legislation, which would help fund 187 while reducing the treasuries of property-rich areas like the North Shore, according to Link. “The loss of tax revenue from (the legislation) will be a lot less than what it would be for Lake Forest and Lake Bluff under consolidation,” Link said.

Let’s Talk Real Estate by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner Crs, GrI
rOOm COnversIOn neCessItIes Re-purposing unused areas of a home into functional rooms provides the homeowner many benefits. The immediate benefit of converted rooms is that they provide enjoyment, relaxation and purpose in what was previously wasted space. Long-term, room conversions add value to a home by providing prospective buyers with the maximum efficiency of a home’s floor plan and square footage, as well as the uniqueness of the converted room. Efficiency kitchens, libraries, observatories, home theatres, greenhouses, wine rooms, spa-sauna combos or secondary suites are all distinctive choices for a room conversion that make a home stand apart from others, while simultaneously benefiting the homeowner by providing convenience and a sense of luxury without the hefty price tag. Before beginning any room conversion, however, there are necessary considerations to make before deciding what licensed contractors will be required in order to ensure the new room’s comfort, safety and long-term maintenance. The first consideration is, what room are you converting, and what will this room need? For example, venting an insulated attic room properly is crucial for comfort, safety and household maintenance. Improperly ventilated, an attic conversion will not simply be uncomfortably hot, but it will also be damaging to the overall structure. Likewise, basement and garage conversions must have adequate light and ventilation, as well as be sealed to protect against dampness and moisture. Once you’ve taken the necessities into account, it’s time to start the fun part—building a one-of-a-kind room into your family’s unique house! CASA Gala May 14
Event celebrates volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children. By JOANNA BROWN dailynorthshore.com

t was a skim through the daily newspaper that prompted Long Grove’s Janice Greenawalt to become a court appointed special advocate in 2007. It was a serendipitous moment that she wouldn’t change. “Quite honestly, my nest was starting to empty and I found myself with more free time. And there was this small announcement in the paper about local volunteer opportunities,” Greenawalt said, recalling how she learned about CASA Lake County. CASA’s 300-plus volunteers are tasked with representing the best interests of abused and neglected children in the juvenile justice system. More than 550 children annu-
ally are paired with CASA volunteers. “I liked the idea of working with children and the challenge of the legal interaction, which is not something I’d done before,” Greenawalt said. She was quick to register for CASA’s 40-hour training program and be sworn in as a volunteer. CASA volunteers are asked to commit at least 10 hours per month to their assigned case, for at least a twoyear term. They are assigned one case at a time. The organization will celebrate its successes at the twelfth annual CASA Lake County Gala Saturday, May 14, at Ravinia in Highland Park. The event will feature live and silent auctions, dinner and dancing. Guests will also hear from a 20-year old man who as a child
benefitted from the support provided by CASA Lake County’s volunteers. “The reality is that not every child is born into a family that can support his or her needs,” Greenawalt said. “I keep going back to CASA because every child deserves to have a voice, but the majority can’t speak for themselves because of their age or emotional maturity. Each case is an opportunity to help a child find a path for moving forward toward a productive, successful life.” Also at the Gala, CASA Lake County will honor Robert L. Parkinson Jr., Chairman Emeritus of Baxter International Inc., with the Terri Zenner Award for Outstanding Service to Children and the Community. Parkinson is a licensed foster parent and a

long-time advocate for children in the communities CASA serves. Funds raised at the Gala will enable CASA Lake County to continue its work. The organization sites research showing that a child with a CASA volunteer advocate is less likely to experience further abuse; moves more rapidly through the court system; stays an average of 10 months less in foster care; and is more likely to be adopted into a safe and permanent home. “The judges appreciate the work that CASA volunteers do and often ask for our input – they look for the reports that the CASA volunteers make to the courts – because our volunteers have more time to spend with the children than the caseworkers who are jug-

gling multiple cases,” said Gala chairwoman Joanna Lynn, of Riverwoods. Lynn learned about CASA during her employer’s Lunch and Learn series. And when she (like Greenawalt) found herself with free time, she sought out the organization she had long admired. “CASA allows volunteers one-on-one interaction with children in such a way that I could see the difference I was making in their lives; that’s what appealed to me,” Lynn recalled. “Helping these children grow up and receive the things they need to flourish, like love and attention and social services, is the biggest gift I can give to someone.” Find more information at www.casalakecounty/events.

Wilmette Welcomes Trendy Taco
By EMILY SPECTRE
W
ILMETTE — Tacos seem to be having a moment and so is downtown Wilmette’s restaurant scene, with the arrival of yet another new restaurant — The Trendy Taco. Trendy Taco is the brainchild of Carla Connett, owner of Wilmette’s Hotcakes restaurant as well as The Original Green Bay Cafe in Winnetka. Since July when Hotcakes relocated a few doors down on Wilmette Avenue, Connett has been planning to open a Mexican restaurant in its former location. No longer a
restaurant. “It is simple, quick, fast and excellent quality,” Connett said. She brings the same fresh ingredients that customers have come to expect at her other restaurants to Trendy Taco. Everything is made fresh on site from the tortilla chips to the guacamole and salsa. The menu includes an assortment of mix-and-match tacos that include something for everyone, with meat, vegetarian and fish options. And reasonably priced from $3 to $3.50 — customers are likely to sample more than one. cozy breakfast and lunch spot, For example, customers can the storefront has been trans- choose from marinated pork formed into a Mexican-themed and grilled pineapple with restaurant with colorful murals avocado salsa, a taco filled with of geckos displayed on the walls an assortment of marinated and salsa music playing in the vegetables or a spicy shrimp background. taco. Giants, Cole mining wins ‘Life of the party’ senior playing key role in Highland Park’s early success
D
anni Cole was running late for school one day last week. The Highland Park High School senior water polo player grabbed a pair of shoes on her way out the door. Cole arrived at school. She had a left shoe and … another left shoe. Cole had mistakenly picked up a left white Converse sneaker belonging to one of her twin sisters, sophomore Ari Cole. Danni did not panic, did not feel embarrassed, did not plan to return home and slip her right foot into a right shoe. She chose to laugh at herself instead and walk around all day in two left shoes. She was fine with her fashion faux pas, all right with it. “She walked strangely that day,” HP senior water poloist Emma Gelberg, one of the Giants’ top scorers, recalls. “Danni joked about it all day. She pointed out her two left shoes to her friends, to probably everybody. She thought it was funny. “Typical Danni Cole,” Gelberg adds. “Classic Danni Cole.” Cole and all of her teammates are laughing often these days, having a blast in and out of the water. The Giants captured the Deerfield Tournament title on April 9, winning four games to improve to 12-0. Cole, shoeless, scored two goals in HP’s 8-6, tourney-opening defeat of Whitney Young. Primarily a driver, Cole ranks third among Giants in scoring (behind Emma Gelberg and Emma’s twin, Natalie) and loves to pick off passes or cause turnovers at the other end of the pool. “She is one of our smartest players,” Highland Park coach Danny Weinberg says of Cole, a daughter of Miriam, a perennial age-group champion at Ironman races. “She gets it, gets what this sport is about. She understands positioning. Her water polo IQ … it’s high. Her sports IQ is high.” Cole, a four-year varsity swimmer, was a sophomore in the spring of 2014, one year removed from being a goalkeeper in Highland Park’s soccer program. Weinberg, a Highland Park Aquatics Club coach, had known Cole, the swimmer. He put the water polo

delivers them. Her deliveries make her stories funny.” Cole puts her humor and enthusiasm to good use whenever she teaches swimming to tots, either at the local rec center or at her school’s natatorium during Giant Splash, an annual learn-toswim event for members of lowincome families. Cole gets kids’ attention right away when she screams, “What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?” A kid blurts out a flavor. Cole then instructs, “Pretend all of the water in the pool is that flavor and scoop (cup your hands like a scoop) as you swim the freestyle.” Kid swims laps. Kid begs for a Dairy Queen run after the lesson. Professional swim instructor, post college (most likely the University of Illinois), is not high on her list of potential careers. Cole sees herself working for a public relations firm, or maybe in advertising. “I took a class at school, marketing, and I found out I’m pretty good at photo-shopping,” says Cole, the older sister of twins/polo teammates, sophomores Ari and Noa, and a pair of brothers, Caleb, 14, and Jaden, 12. “And I like to talk. Locks and loaded
Lake Forest High School’s Moore spikes the ball in resounding fashion BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
E
nter a gym before the start of a match involving the Lake Forest High School boys volleyball team and find a seat. Close your eyes. Listen. Players slap and pound volleyballs at a chaotic rate in the warm-up session, producing music to some ears, violent noise to others. Players warming up on the other side of the net are at risk. Spectators in the stands are at risk. Even concession stand customers, milling around outside the gym, have to keep one eye on their popcorn and the other eye on the gym’s entrances. Fast-moving volleyballs sometimes find escape routes. The sound of a hand thwacking a volleyball precedes the sound of the same volleyball smacking hardwood. Bam!...boom! There is one intermittent sound that is clearly louder than the other sounds. Open your eyes. Mason Moore, you’ll discover, is the source of that sound. The Lake Forest senior outside hitter is the king of cacophony, capable of deflating volleyballs and warping floors with one fluid swing of his right arm. “It’s incredible to watch, the things Mason does when we’re warming up,” Scouts senior outside hitter and captain Will Audley says of the 6-foot-4, 175-pound Moore, a third-year varsity member and the Scouts’ lone returning all-North Suburban Conference pick. “He can get up, get way up there.” It is impossible to miss Moore before or during matches, and not just because the Lake Bluff resident does most of his work well north of nets. There’s his hair, orange and wavy, a delightful ’do from the 1970s that bounces when he bounces. Moore’s mane resembles the locks Danny Bonaduce’s “Danny” character sported in “The Partridge Family,” a television series (1970-74). Moore’s Match Face exudes confidence and unflappability. He’s a crowd pleaser, his emphatic kills serving as the equivalents of emphatic dunks in a basketball game. Scouts fans oohed and aahed a whoa-ed after Moore kills in
Larry Wrather, a father-and-son duo. The club plays matches along the North Shore and in the Great Lakes region. “Military guys,” Moore, a club volleyball player since his f reshman year, says. “The Wrathers taught me the importance of discipline.” Moore is thinking about continuing his volleyball career at Carthage College in Wisconsin. He might major in finance, just like a certain family member and former Scouts spiker did. The real estate industry intrigues him, thanks to a teacher at LFHS. “A job in commercial real estate,” Moore says. “Right now, that’s my dream job.” It makes sense, the perfect kind. The finisher at the net wants to close deals for a living. Notable: Lake Forest split its first four matches at the Glenbard Tournament in April 9, falling to Neuqua Valley and Glenbard West and beating W heeling and Plainfield Central. The victories were straight-set decisions. LF then lost 25-22, 25-23 to Glenbard North in its finale. Scouts senior outside hitter Will Audley (22 kills), senior middle Shane King (20) and freshman hitter/setter Kevin Lamp (10) finished 2-3-4 behind LF senior outside hitter Mason Moore (56) in attacks. Senior setter Varun Rao lofted 82 assists and smacked four aces. Lamp also finished with 25 assists, five blocks and five aces. Yavitt Factor
‘Crazy Eyes’ lighting up the scoreboard for New Trier’s boys water polo team BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
H
enry Yavitt sits in the stands of a natatorium, politely answering questions about the roles he plays for the New Trier varsity water polo team and other topics. The junior’s teammates are to his right, strewn in a section of benches above a pool. They are watching NT’s JV team battle host Evanston. Yavitt appears slightly uncomfortable. Water polo is a team sport, not an individual one, his body language communicates. Yavitt, a Winnetkan, listens to another question. Yavitt replies. His eyes are sleepy, in a calm, cool way. Put a cowboy hat on him and he’d be a casting director’s easy pick to portray a posse member in an oater. “He’s got that calm demeanor when he’s in the water, for the most part,” Trevians coach David Rafferty-Flatter says. “Henry understands a game has its ups and downs and that there is a chess game going on within the game. Experienced players know the importance of staying calm, staying focused. But his face changes when he shoots. His eyes change, actually.” Yavitt’s eyes double, maybe triple, in size and bulge when he grips and prepares to chuck a fastball at a goalkeeper. “He gets crazy eyes when he shoots,” Rafferty-Flatter adds. “That’s why we call him ‘Crazy Eyes.’ ” Yavitt’s 2016 season, his second full one on varsity, in two words: crazy good. The 6-foot-2, 155-pounder, an all-illpolo.com preseason honorable mention pick, is playing like a firstteam pick. At both ends of the pool. He poured in a tournament-best 13 goals in the Mundelein Tournament on March 18-19, matching his goal total at the Palatine Tournament (held at Homewood-Flossmoor) on March 11-12. NT won both tourneys. NT (13-2-1) then captured its third invite title of the spring on April 9, going 2-0-1 at Naperville North. RaffertyFlatter’s crew routed St. Charles North 14-4 in the championship game. The Trevs’ top scorer in the tournament was Yavitt, with seven goals. “One of the fastest guys on the team, super explosive,” NT senior driver/ utility player Charlie Ryan says of Yavitt, whose twin, Sam Yavitt, also suits up for the varsity. “He’s quick, really fluid. Henry had a great summer. The amount of time he put in and his work ethic … he improved quite a bit. I’m not surprised he’s having the kind of season he’s having and scoring the number of goals he has scored. Not surprised at all.” Yavitt scored 16 goals in 31 games

as a reserve player for last year’s varsity, a state quarterfinalist. He tallied a quarter of that total in NT’s 11-5 defeat of host Evanston on April 7. “Whatever the coach needs me to do, whatever the team needs,” Yavitt says of his responsibilities this spring. “Every game, it seems, there’s a different standout for us. We rely on speed, motion. If we get down a few goals in a game, we don’t panic. We stick with our game plan. I expected our team to start out as well as we have because of the commitment so many of us made in the offseason, camps and clubs, sessions in the weight room in the fall. “I’m lucky to be a part of this group.” The group is ranked fourth in the state by illpolo.com. The Yavitt twins’ father, Keith, is an assistant water polo coach at New Trier. He played polo at the University of Arizona and coached girls water polo teams at Oak Park-River Forest High School. The night before New Trier’s game at Evanston, Dad Yavitt
walked into the twins’ bedroom at 10:15 p.m. Each son was studying water polo film. Cram sessions, minus textbooks. Ten minutes after the conclusion of the NT-Evanston game, Rafferty-Flatter, standing poolside, said he’d be surprised if Henry Yavitt hadn’t texted him later that night inquiring about the availability of footage from the NT-Evanston game. “Henry, like all of his teammates, are all in, are all team-first guys,” Rafferty-Flatter says. “Henry doesn’t just score for us; he does things that sometimes go unnoticed, like passing, like [drawing] ejections. What makes him a strong player, what separates him from many others, is his tenacity. He is not afraid of contact, and he’s got that blue-collar work ethic. Henry puts his boots on every day and goes to work. It’s the kind of work ethic that’s contagious. He wants to win. His teammates want to win.” Yavitt got introduced to water polo at Old Willow Club in Northbrook.
He was a fourth-grader at the time. Old Willow water polo seasons in the summers lasted only a month. Hockey would become his favorite sport before the start of his high school years. Patrick Kane would become his favorite Chicago Blackhawk. Hockey or water polo? Dekes on ice or pump fakes in water? Yavitt picked polo. “I like it; I really like it,” says Yavitt, a member of the frosh-soph Central Suburban League South championship team in his freshman season. “I enjoy water polo because it’s a mixture of several other sports … basketball and soccer, with some wrestling.” Yavitt smiles. The word “wrestling” had triggered the reaction. He stops smiling seconds later, awaiting the next question. Still calm. Still cool. Notable: Trevians senior Charlie Ryan and junior Danilo Scekic each
scored six tournament goals at last weekend’s Naperville North Tournament. Seniors Zach Cohen and Nick Kish and junior Sam Yavitt contributed three goals apiece. NT senior Michael Krueger, a preseason all-illpolo.com First-Teamer, dished a teamhigh seven assists. Sam Yavitt and senior Will Kohr each finished with five assists. Senior Piers Braunrot and junior Cole Maziel shared time in goal for the tourney champs, Cole collecting 10 saves in the title game (a 14-4 defeat of St. Charles North) and Braunrot stopping 11 shots in a 9-9 tie with the host school. Each allowed only one goal in NT’s 13-2 win over Sandburg on April 9. … Trevians coach David Rafferty-Flatter deployed three goalies — Maziel, Braunrot and Peter Weiser — in NT’s 11-5 defeat of host Evanston on Jan. 7. Junior Henry Yavitt paced the Trevians’ attack with four goals, followed by Sam Yavitt (two), Ryan (two), Scekic (two) and Krueger (one).

Keep on keeping on Freda, reigning state champion Ramblers continue to take nothing for granted
A
he Ana Freda holds up a pair of baggy, powderblue gym shorts inside the training room at the Munz Athletic Campus in Glenview. Loyola Academy’s girls lacrosse team had just won a home game in December-ish temperatures in April, and the Ramblers’ senior goalkeeper is eager to discuss the history of the gym shorts. Images of identical crabs cover the athletic wear. Each crab holds a small lacrosse stick in one of its claws. “My dad [ Joe] bought these for me when I was in the fifth grade,” Freda says, beginning her show-and-tell session. “I was just getting into the sport again, after not playing it for a year. These shorts felt like pants to me when I was little. I’ve worn them under my uniform for every lacrosse game since then. “If I lose them, I’d call for a search and rescue team to find them.” The goalie of the reigning seven-time Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association (IHSWLA) state champions makes sure she does three other things before trotting to her spot in goal each game. She jumps rope. She juggles three lacrosse balls to sharpen her eye-hand coordination. She prays. “I’m working on getting to four [lacrosse balls],” the 5-foot-8 ½ Freda, a Wilmette resident, says. About the number of consecutive state titles Loyola Academy has won … Freda does not want to hear “seven.” Nor do any of her teammates. “We don’t like to think about streaks,” Freda, a co-captain this spring and an IHSWLA all-stater (First Team) last spring, insists. “We lost six seniors [to graduation] last year, six amazing seniors. Our team, this year, hasn’t won anything. Our program likes to look at it that way each season. It keeps us humble.” Loyola Academy’s Ramblers, the 2016 version, won their first six games, lost their next five

games, won two games in as many days last weekend. That five-game losing streak is not as worrisome as it might appear. LA (8-5) lost the five-pack during its trip to the East Coast, where Freda, beginning next spring, will don her trusty gym shorts as a goalie at Division I American University in Washington, D.C. Two of the losses on lacrosse-hotbed soil were one-goal decisions, the other three 12-9 setbacks. “Amer ic an Universit y coaches were there to watch Ana play,” Ramblers coach John Dwyer says. “She played well. We played well against some very good teams. “Ana,” he adds, “is pretty fiery and confident, not afraid to speak her mind. She’s also athletic and a good kid.” The good kid is a grandkid of former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Bob Wetoska, No. 63. He was a member of the Bears’ 1963 NFL Championship team. A poster of a Bears action shot in ’63 hangs on a wall in the basement of the Freda home, not too far from where Ana tackles an elliptical. See poster, churn faster. And faster. Bear down, Ana Freda. Wetoska’s football coach at the University of Notre Dame was Terry Brennan, who happens to be the father-in-law of … Dwyer. Dinky world. “My grandpa,” Freda says, “gave me that poster. He has always inspired me. He has always encouraged me to push myself, to be tough, to never give up. Adversity? That can be a good thing. There’s that great quote … ‘Adversity teaches us the truth about ourselves.’ ” Freda was a field player on the day she became a goalkeeper. It is a familiar narrative: coach needs a keeper in practice one day; coach asks for a volunteer; coach looks for an elevated hand. Freda raised her hand at a practice one day, back in the fifth grade, a little before she jumped into a pair of North Carolina-blue gym shorts for the first time. She later got the nod to start in a game. Home. Freda felt comfortable in a critical position on a field. “I liked the sense of respon-

We were all so happy. “Ana,” she adds, “is a great leader, loud and disciplined. She sees the field differently than we do, and she’s good at pointing things out for us. It’s nice having her set of eyes during games; we each know she always has our back.” Foley and Freda take an AP French class together. The former field player who raised her hand at a lacrosse practice all those years ago likes to execute the same move in a classroom setting. “She speaks up in AP French,” a grinning Foley says. “She challenges the teacher.” Notable: Loyola Academy outscored a pair of opponents by a combined 36-6 in two days last weekend. LA defeated visiting Lake Forest High School 19-1 on April 9 and visiting Lake Oswego (Oregon) 17-5 on April 10. USC-bound goalkeeper Riley Hertford and Northwestern-bound middie Lauren Gilbert play for Lake Oswego. Ramblers junior middie Brennan Dwyer scored four goals in the first game and three more in the second. Her combined assist total: five. LA junior middie Colleen Huffman poured in a team-high four goals against the Oregonians. SUNDAY BREAKFAST
Passion for Tunes and Tutoring By BILL MCLEAN
D
ana Lawrence Gillis smiles and shakes her head over a bowl of mixed f ruit in a restaurant. Her eyes widen, each nearing the size of a small plate. She is in awe of her daughter, Clara Rose, a topic of conversation at Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Highland Park. Gillis’ daughter is six years old, six-and-a-half if you ask Clara Rose. “She is six, going on 16,” Gillis, 40, says. “So sharp, so articulate. She blows me away with her perceptions. She is well aware of nuances in life. A fierce, little spirit, my daughter.” Dana Lawrence Gillis is a mother first. Second? Call it a perpetual tie, between tutor and musician. Gillis, a 1994 Highland Park High School graduate who returned to live in Highland Park three years ago, and Ellie Rubenstein co-own t2, a K-12 learning center in Highland Park. In December, t2 turns four. Gillis also performs at venues in Chicagoland, strumming her Breedlove guitar and singing folk rock, “with a blues jazz influence,” she adds. Patrons at The Panda Bar in Highland Park and at The Grille on Laurel in Lake Forest have tapped their feet and nodded their heads during Gillis’ tunes. Nothing stirs her more than seeing her parents, Lester and Adrienne Lawrence of Highland Park, tap and nod in the f ront row during one of her shows. “It fills my heart every time I sing and notice them,” says Gillis, who recorded her first CD, “Easier,” in 2001. “My parents have always been examples of strength and stability. They have been amazing and incredibly supportive during my crazy journey.” The first leg of that trip began at the age of two, when Gillis started playing classical violin. Maybe she was two, going on 16. Her two older brothers had played classical violin. Her thinking: Let me play, too. She drew a bow across the strings for 14 years. The sound of a guitar — spe-
cifically her father’s 1960 Martin Classical guitar — struck a visceral chord with her and relegated classical violin to former instrument. The student in her wanted to learn to play guitar. The poet in her wanted to write songs. “I loved music when I was young, and I loved school just as m u c h , ” Gillis says. “ I was a teacher’s pet. I loved reading and writing, learning and growing. Still do. I remember when I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I was in the second grade, doing an art project with my classmates. We were making M o t h e r ’s D a y gifts, using magnets and cotton balls [and other items]. I looked at my teacher on that day and thought, Wow, this and math in a classroom … I want to be a teacher. Wonderful teachers truly inspired me.” The daughter of a mother who taught French at Ne w Trier High School for more than 30 years landed her first teaching gig at an elementary school in Chicago nearly 15 years ago. Beginning in 2007, Gillis found herself in the hallways and in the classrooms of L i n c o l n Pa r k School in Highland Park — her alma mater. It was her turn to inspire kindergartners and secondgraders and fourth-graders. “ Thrilled and honored,” Gillis, a Northwestern Uni-
versity (Master of Science in Education) graduate, says of the opportunity to receive apples rather than to give them in Nor th Shore School District 112 c lassrooms. Gillis and Rubenstein resigned f rom their Lincoln School teaching posts in 2013 to form t2, located on First Street in Highland Pa rk . learning than it has to do with helping students ace that next test or craft that next essay. “We don’t pretend to know all there is about advanced algebra,” Gillis says. “Teachers have different ways of teaching, and students have different ways of learning. Our focus is on individual learning style. We can help students grasp material and maximize their learning opportunities. We can help empower them to become brave in the classroom, to become bold during school days. Sometimes the most difficult part of a student’s day is coming up with the best way to approach a teacher about a concern. “One of the first questions we ask when we first meet a student at t2 is, ‘What interests you?’ That student realizes, in the first 10-15 minutes, that we’re not here to teach. That puts the student at ease. We want students to eventually realize they can have control, a say, at school.” Gillis ran for the cross country and track and field teams at HPHS. She immersed herself in full contact karate from 2001-06, earning a brown belt with a black stripe. Vibrant violet is her color of choice today, the hue highlighting the ends of her black hair for about a year. A day without doing something to break a sweat — running, biking, yoga, rollerblading or circuit training — is a regrettable day in her world. A dandy day? Getting to do any of the aforementioned activities with her daughter. “You should have heard what Clara Rose said to me last summer, after we had spent some time together exercising outside,” Gillis says. Gillis picks up her smart phone and searches for the exact quote. Her thumb races. Her thumb stops. “Here it is,” the proud mother says. She shares her daughter’s insight: If you don’t love yourself, your body will listen to your true heart and get sick. So I wanna love myself and follow my true heart and be healthy and happy. — Clara Rose, 8/23, 11:10 a.m.
