INNETKA — The Winnetka Village Council took its first step towards saving residents money on their flood insurance premiums by hiring engineering consultants Baxter and Woodman to develop a watershed master plan to improve the village’s flood insurance rating. Winnetka participates in the National Flood Insurance Program/Community Rating System and is rated as “class 6” under that system. This rating already saves village residents who carry flood insurance on their premiums, but the village would like to improve its rating from class 6 to class 4 in order to capture additional savings. Both the late Kenneth Solomon and David Solomon served as president of JCYS – the only multi-generational family to do so. The late Kenneth joined the JCYS

NEWS FLORIST Continued from PG 1 warmth and service.” Flavin said that as a florist, she enjoys being able to warm up a person’s day when the weather is at its wintry worst. “I love being able to walk in when the weather is so dreary and work in an environment surrounded by the beauty of life,” Flavin said. “I can’t be feeling low when I’m doing what I love.” Growing up in Wilmette before heading to DePaul University, Flavin worked part-time in a flower shop while in college. Though her job was entry level, the gig directed the art major’s creative skills into designing flowers as her life’s work. “I swept the floors and conditioned the flowers,” Flavin said, describing how she removed thorns from rose stems and took excess foliage off other plants to get them ready for sale in the shop. From that first experience I knew right away I loved it and it’s what I wanted to do.” After graduating from DePaul, a friend of a friend told her about a shop in Lake Forest, Exfloreus, and suggested she see the owner about a job. Flavin was hired and worked there with some time off for maternity leave until the store closed in 2008. Exfloreus was gone, but Flavin said many of the customers stayed with her as she continued to do their floral designs out of her basement and garage. Then she

Village engineer Steve Saunders told the council that hiring Baxter for $37,500 would allow the village to recoup its investment in about six months. Baxter would prepare a watershed master plan relating to the flood plain of the Skokie River. The river flows from northern Lake County and works its way south to Winnetka. To achieve a class 4 rating, the village must adopt a master plan. The master plan would be used to make decisions that would mitigate the impact of future development in the village. Saunders told the Village Council that Winnetka would be

She started to plan her new store. “You’ve got one life and you have to do the best with it,” said

Saunders said he did not anticipate any changes to the village’s ordinances, given that it already complies with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s flood plain regulations. President Gene Greable asked whether residents understood the savings on their insurance premiums. Saunders explained that residents would not need to apply for those savings but that they would automatically apply once the village was rated class 4. While residents who hold flood insurance policies outside of the flood plain would also receive a discount, Saunders said it would be a lower amount. The main beneficiaries of the class 4 rating would be residents who hold flood insurance policies and live in the flood plain.

While working at Hana Japan, which later became Koya, his dad noticed that the restaurant wasn’t attracting enough business. He felt this was due to the “inconsistency of the food quality and the service, but realized it had potential,” said Kim. “So after he took it over, he and mom worked really hard to provide the best quality food and service.” In 2005, Hyung Kim and his wife Grace took over Hana Japan, and renamed it Koya, which means mountain in Japanese. Koya always stocks up on large portions of fresh raw fish. “We use 15 or 20 pounds of tuna in two days,” said Kim. “We also get salmon and Dad always picks out the best quality vegetables too.” The dishes are known for their alluring presentations. “My dad loves to make it pretty, and is very particular about keeping everything clean,” said Kim. Each entrée comes with miso soup and a special dessert of vanilla cookies with a hint of chocolate and mochi ice cream, a small, round dessert ball consisting of a soft, pounded sticky rice cake (mochi) formed around

an ice cream filling. “My mom loves kids and started giving out ice cream to them and decided to make it complimentary to all of our customers,” said Kim. Kim said the restaurant used to be about half of the size with only six or seven tables. The family expanded Koya two years ago when they took over a vitamin store. The original section includes a few tables and an intimate sushi bar where diners can see Chef Kim preparing creations, while the expanded new section offers seating options for romantic date nights or family gatherings. Koya also does a large takeout business, and is open for lunch. Other tenants in the strip center include a dry cleaner, and an Il Forno Pizzeria, which is conveniently located across from the Fort Sheridan train station, and bike path. Due to the popularity of Koya in Highland Park, the Kims opened another restaurant Koya in Wilmette, about a year and a half ago next to the Wilmette Theater at 1116 Wilmette Avenue. Kim runs that location, while his sister is the assistant manager at the Highland Park restaurant. Long waits can be expected at both restaurants on weekends so it’s best to call ahead or visit: Koyasushi.com.

“What Is Art?”

rt lovers abound on the North Shore. You might be one. Maybe you paint, sculpt, write or shoot photos. Maybe your neighbor’s a collector. People around here take classes, browse galleries and debate art. Yet, it’s curious that no satisfying answer to the question of “what is art” has really been agreed upon. After an extensive two minutes of searching the Internet, you find a mind-boggling mix of opinions, but no one definition nails it. Then, today while observing a

man walking his dog an insight hit. You have a possible answer... Wait. We’re getting ahead of ourselves. First, let’s go back a bit. Say, 30,000 years. To a prehistoric handprint. Archaeologists found it in France at Chauvet Cave. It’s almost as famous as the Mona Lisa, albeit a bit more primitive. The Paleolithic artist is immortalized by a simple statement: “I was here.” Bam! THAT could be the universal definition of art. “I was here.” What brought this to mind? What connected a cave drawing to everything in the Art Institute,

as well as all that you’ll see at fairs around the North Shore this summer? The dog! He was also expressing the message “I was here.” His medium was a fencepost, a tree, a hedge. No matter, it still told the world that he existed and wanted to be remembered. That elemental statement made you think of the enduring handprint, and gave you a pretty decent definition of all art. Is it accurate? Academic? Sophisticated? Unassailable? Well, just because it was suggested by a dog doesn’t mean it’s not on the mark.

ENGELHARD EASY TO LIKE Impactful New Trier goalie plays with an unflappable demeanor BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

he goalie made her water polo debut in 2013, and her team lost by 12 goals. Lauren Engelhard, former park district soccer goalkeeper, was a freshman goalie on New Trier High School’s girls freshman water polo team three springs ago. The result shook her. She felt like crying that day. Had she wept, her tears would have blended in with the drops of pool water dotting her face. Her coach knew exactly what to say to the newbie. “My coach,” Engelhard recalls, “told me to put a smile on my face.” She did what she was told to do. She stuck with the sport, much to the delight of her coaches and teammates and her future coaches and future teammates. Last spring, near the end of what would be the best varsity season in program history, Trevians varsity senior goalkeeper Keelin Frank suffered a concussion. She missed a handful of games. Varsity coach Matt Wendt deployed his JV keeper in goal for games late in the regular season. The fill-in was Engelhard, still smiling. The fill-in came up big, never bigger than the night — New Trier’s senior night, on May 7 — in which she helped NT edge Naperville North 4-3. Naperville North boasted potent shooters. Engelhard stopped potent shot after potent shot after potent shot. “I don’t know how that happened,” the 5-foot-8 Engelhard, now a senior starter and eternally bubbly, says. “I do know I had a good team in front of me, like I do this year. “I knew, when I was a freshman, I wanted to play a spring sport. I had experience playing goalie, but only for park district soccer teams. I wasn’t great. I played soccer for fun, and I knew I wouldn’t be good enough to play for New Trier’s soccer program. So water polo it was. I went out for water polo.” Frank recovered in time for the start of the 2015 postseason, relegating Engelhard to backup

again, the keepers. But Engelhard is not thinking about autumn. It is springtime, May, water polo’s big month. Time to focus. Time to put on blinkers, the figurative kind for humans, not the kind those horses wore at Churchill Downs Racetrack last weekend. It is also an ideal time for Engelhard to listen to her teammates and jot down anything she hears that makes her laugh. Engelhard has been compiling memorable lines all season. Memorable moments, too. A teammate sang a Sarah McLachlan song on the team bus, the sad tune, the one that accompanies that Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals commercial. You’ve seen it; you’ve welled up. Engelhard made a note of it. Another teammate likes to pronounce “granola” differently than everybody else does, and she explained her reason for doing so. Engelhard made a note of it. The lines, the memories, they’re all accessible via Engelhard’s phone. The keeper is a diligent keepsake collector. “I hope we get to see all of them after the season,” Caywood says.

status. Engelhard shrugged. It made perfect sense; Frank deserved the job she had earned at the beginning of the season. Engelhard considered Frank her second mom, her No. 1 mentor. Frank and her mates finished second to Stevenson at the state tournament to cap a 23-10 season last spring. “The defining moment in Lauren’s season last year was her game against Naperville North,” Wendt says. “That was a big game for her, for us. But you know what really impressed me? Her grace … the grace she showed when Keelin was healthy enough to return. She stepped aside. Everybody loves Lauren; she’s universally loved. A perfect leader, always positive to her teammates in tough situa-

tions. Supportive. Great teammate, great friend.” Wendt held a “Water Polo Olympics” in the preseason this spring in the home water. His players tested their leaping ability and arm strength, among other skills, against each other. Nobody’s head got closer to touching the ceiling of the natatorium than Engelhard’s did in the vertical leap segment, and who in the world would ever want to face Engelhard in a game of dodge ball? Her outlet passes in water polo are accurate fastballs, bonedry by the time they reach her intended targets. “She’s also a reliable passer, really good at making the safe pass,” says NT junior centerguard Sarah Caywood, referring

to the well-placed pass to a closely guarded teammate. “Lauren is an amazing goalie. She sees the whole pool. She’s good at directing us, at being a coach in the water. And she never gets frustrated.” Engelhard and junior Elizabeth McKenna shared time in goal in New Trier’s 9-3 defeat of Evanston Township High School for the Central Suburban League Tournament title at Glenbrook North on May 7. Engelhard, named a preseason fourth-team all-stater by illpolo.com, batted away a fast-break shot and exploded straight up to make a high save in the final minute of the first half. The win upped the Trevians’ record to 22-8. Wendt’s crew is seeded first in this week’s

Glenbrook South Sectional and ranked seventh in the state by illpolo.com. One of the team’s many strengths is its refusal to dwell on goals allowed. Watch Engelhard’s face after an opponent scores a goal. It’s blank. It says, That’s only one goal. Let’s get back to work. “We all think like that and compete like that,” Engelhard, one of four team captains, says. “I like to step back and refocus right away [after a goal a gainst]. As a team we’re really good at not letting goals bother us. We’re also good at getting into what our coach [Wendt] calls ‘beast mode.’ ” Frank attends the University of Illinois. That is Engelhard’s destination this fall. Together

aylor Gilling, as self-effacing and humble as they come, has become one of the new faces of the Highland Park High School girls track and field team. She might wear bright pink spikes. But don’t be bamboozled by those. The freshman sprinter — a blur on the track — is not trying to bring a lot of attention to herself. “She’s very unassuming,” says teammate Amy Rogin. “Taylor is not the type of person who is going to say, ‘[Watch me], I’m the best.’ That’s why I don’t mind speaking up for her. “When she runs, you definitely notice her,” Rogin adds. “She’s special. I remember the first time that I saw her on the track. I said, ‘Wow! Who’s this?’ ” Sarah Palmberg, head coach of HP’s girls track team, loves the kid’s humility. She also loves Gilling’s competitive drive. “She’s humble,” says Palmberg. “But she’s also confident. It’s a nice combination. “She’s little, but she’s got a lot of power,” the HP coach adds. “She’s young, but her attitude is: ‘I got this. You can count on me.’ ” Gilling has burst onto the girls track scene. And she displayed plenty of turbo-power in the Central Suburban North championship meet at Maine East on May 5, helping the Giants to their fourth straight outdoor league championship. In Gilling’s first race of the night — 4x100 relay — she took the baton from No. 3 runner Zoe Romoff and blasted to a first-place finish (51.26). “I was just thinking, ‘Get to the finish line first,’ ” says Gilling, teaming up with Romoff, Rogin and Annelise Van Den Akker. “I was in first place when I got the baton. Just wanted to protect the lead.” “From the beginning of the season until now, she’s gotten a lot more confident,” says Rogin. “She does a good job of running anchor. Seeing that finish line [motivates] her.” Later in the evening, Gilling anchored the winning 4x200 relay (1:47.03), which included Romoff, Grace Rhoades and Emily Shimanovsky. “I love running relays. I love the team part of it,” adds Gilling, flash-

MCKEOUGH = MATURITY Loyola senior co-captain is leading the team on the field — and in the dugout BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

n a morning perfectly suited for Dutch windmills and wind turbines, Loyola Academy’s Liam McKeough was more than willing to shoot the breeze with a scribe he’d never met. It was not an easy assignment for the standout pitcher/center fielder. Minutes earlier, his baseball team was broadsided by one of the best teams in the state. This one smarted. In the top of the seventh inning, visiting St. Rita — ranked ninth in Illinois by the Prep Baseball Report — churned out eight runs. A tight baseball game on May 7 had turned into … a dreaded football score: St. Rita 15, LA 7. “Nothing comes easy against teams in this conference [Chicago Catholic League],” says McKeough. “But to lose this game is hard, especially when we had them on the ropes [LA held a 7-5 lead after five frames].” But look what the wind blew in. Crazy, hazy things happened in this lively contest — especially in that fateful seventh inning. Thirty mile-per-hour gusts can do unspeakable things to perfectly normal outfielders on the varsity baseball diamond at the Munz Athletic Campus in Glenview. “It can turn into a wind tunnel at times,” assesses McKeough. Some days, it’s home field advantage. Some days, not so much. “After a game like this, the toughest part for me is to keep my sanity,” says LA head coach Nick Bridich, “and for the guys on this team to stay positive.” No worries. LA has that covered. Starting with McKeough, the Ramblers (15-9) are blessed with great team leadership. The senior co-captain — ask just anyone who knows him well — is mature beyond his years. And to make matters even better, McKeough’s words have weight. He is having an excellent year. Talk about leading by example. McKeough currently is putting up glaring numbers: .405 batting average, .486 on-base percentage, .500 slugging percentage and .985 OPS (on-base plus slugging).

He’s driven in 18 runs and scored 20 times. “I’ve been a little up and down at the plate in past years,” says McKeough. “But this year, it’s all come together for me. Hitting over .400 at this point in the season and against the competi-

tion we faced is pretty satisfying.” There’s not a lot of swing and miss with McKeough. He has fanned only 12 times in 99 plate appearances. “He’s been our most consistent hitter,” says Bridich. “He uses the entire field. He does everything

well with the bat. “We go how Liam goes,” the LA coach adds. On the mound, McKeough has been a nice fit on a fairly deep staff. He has made five starts. He’s 2-2 with a 3.89 earned run average. In 27 innings, he’s

allowed 26 hits to go along with 20 strikeouts and 12 walks. And when it comes to maturity levels, McKeough bounces off the charts. “Liam is extremely tough mentally, and he’s emotionally composed,” says Bridich. “He’s one of the most mature players that I’ve ever coached. “He takes ownership,” the coach adds. “He takes care of business. He thinks about the team and puts the team before himself.” McKeough relishes the role of being a two-way player. “It’s a privilege,” he says. “And it’s a challenge that I’d like to face for next four years of my life.” McKeough’s next destination is Denison University in Granville, Ohio. And according to veteran baseball instructor Paul Kosinski of The Strike Zone Baseball Academy in Glenview, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound McKeough will have no trouble transitioning to Division III baseball. “He’s all-business [when it comes to baseball], says Kosinski. “Working with him is like working with a college guy. He locks onto instruction really well. “He’s incredible smart. Incredibly mature,” Kosinski adds. “And that’s a wickedly good combination.” Kosinski sees him as a two-way college player. “Playing in the Chicago Catholic League, he’s facing a lot of the college-level pitchers,” says Kosinski. “And for him to be hitting .400 is real impressive. “I know it’s incredibly difficult to be a two-way player in college, but I think he can do it,” the instructor adds. “He’ll definitely hit. And pitching-wise, I know people are wowed by velocity. But he’s a guy who gets hitters out. I think they will recognize that.” Kosinski also believes McKeough’s glove will play at the next level. “He’s not the fastest, but he gets incredible jumps on the ball,” says Kosinski. “He does a good job of reading the baseball off the bat.” And his demeanor? “He doesn’t get too high or too low during a game,” Kosinski says.

“He doesn’t take a [tough] at-bat to the field or a vice versa. He does a good job of focusing on what’s in front of him.” McKeough traces his love for baseball back to his formative years — living in St. Louis. Most of the family members on his dad’s side reside in Cardinals Country. “Being from St. Louis, one of my true loves has always been baseball,” McKeough says. “I grew up watching [Albert] Pujols, [Scott] Rolen and [ Jim] Edmonds.” It turned him into a lifelong, card-carrying Cardinals fan. And for that? “And for that, I get a lot of grief from my Cub fan teammates,” he says. Ah, the Windy City. Notable: Several LA players are putting up quality stats this spring. Junior shortstop Ryan Lin-Peistrup is hitting .321 with team-highs in doubles (12) and runs batted in (28). Senior third baseman Thomas Smart is batting .370 with 10 extra base hits, 30 runs and a .448 on-base percentage. And junior right-fielder Andrew Bartholow is hitting .360 with 26 runs and 22 RBIs. In limited at-bats, junior Patrick Carpenter is bating .429 with a 1.119 OPS. The team’s top hurlers include Kevin Knapp (3-1, 1.94 ERA), Neil Udelhofen (2-2, 2.80), Thomas Giella (2-0, 1.65), Charlie Rafferty (1-0, 2.17) and David Blankenship (4-3, 3.21). … Junior Sean Tully has been a hot hitter of late. He doubled home two runs in LA’s 15-7 loss to visiting St. Rita on May 7. A day earlier, in a 6-5 setback at Glenbrook North, Tully went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. He’s raised his average to .263 with 18 RBIs. … Smart had two hits against GBN, while he had a double against St. Rita. … The Ramblers swept their two games against Wheaton St. Francis last week. In a 7-4 win on May 5, Lin-Peistrup drove in three runs to support the pitching of Udelhofen (6 IP, 9 Ks). On May 4, LA won 5-2. Knapp got the win. The offense was led by Lin-Peistrup (2 RBIs), Matt McKeough (4for-4) and Brian Vance (2-for-3).

TOP-SHELF TALENT Hockey mentality brings an edge to Baker’s water polo game BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

ay Baker had just skipped a fast shot past Vernon Hills High School’s water polo goalkeeper in a playoff opener earlier this week. The Lake Forest High School senior point/2meter defender was in the home water, bobbing, when he looked up at a referee. The ref motioned Baker to get out of the water. Baker was bleeding. A bewildered Baker had no idea he was bleeding. Water cascades down a face. Blood cascades down a face. Similar sensation. A hand of a Vernon Hills Cougar had struck Baker’s nose on the followthrough of a shot at the other end of the pool. Baker, moments after noticing the ref ’s concern on May 9, wiped his chin and saw blood. He then swam toward a side of the pool, climbed out and stood inches from the ref. Baker felt fine. “Can I go back in now?” Baker, blood still flowing and his team up 8-0, asked. Baker had to walk to his bench and take care of the red streams. The bench, out of the water — it was the last place Baker wanted to be. “The blood stopped after a few minutes,” he would report after the Scouts’ 21-8 victory. Baker chose to stop playing water polo before the start the season last spring. He devoted most of his free time to hockey. His dream was to play Junior Hockey, as a goaltender. The net minder shot high. It did not work out the way he had hoped. Baker, a resident of Lake Bluff, attended one of the Scouts’ home varsity water polo games last spring, against St. Viator. He sat up in the stands of the natatorium. In street clothes. Dry. Too dry. “I couldn’t stand it,” the 6-foot3, 190-pounder recalled. “I couldn’t stand not being able to play. I realized then how much I had missed the sport, how much I had missed the physicality. It’s so different, watching a water polo game from the stands.” Baker was named a water polo tri-captain, along with seniors Tom Condon and Ivan Ramirez, and paced the Scouts (13-13-1) in scoring (around 70 goals) and ranked in the top three among teammates in assists through May

9. The sequence leading up to Baker’s final goal of the playoff game, at 5:02 of the fourth quarter, had a little bit of everything: speed, savvy, tenacity. And a lot of nose. Baker, his arms in full churn, used his beak to nudge-dribble the ball during the fast-break tally. “He’s my biggest guy,” Scouts coach Tom Saleh said, adding his program lost a lot of sizable guys to graduation last spring. “He’s got that physical presence you want, plus a shot and great awareness. His competitive side … I like that about him, too. His hockey game experiences gave him a edge, that edge you see from a lot of hockey players. He brings that to water polo games.” Baker brought up his older brother, Chapman (California) University junior John Baker, in the middle of an interview after the playoff victory, in which he scored four goals and contributed a pair of assists. John played water polo at LFHS and intended to

play water polo at CU before a redshirt freshman season in Orange, California, turned him into a laser-focused kinesiology major and nutrition minor. John is also a lifeguard at a San Diego beach and has applied to join the San Diego Fire Academy. “John was a great role model for me when I was growing up,” Jay Baker said. “He got me interested in water polo. He got me into working out.” Baker heads to the University of Iowa in the fall. Iowa has a water polo club team. Iowa has a hockey club team. Water polo vs. hockey. Water vs. ice. Polo cap vs. goaltender mask. Whither, Jay Baker? “I’m not sure,” he said. “It will be a tough choice. I’ll go with my gut.” Baker, standing close to where he stood when he’d asked that referee for permission to return to the pool following the detection of his bleeding nose, turned his

attention to his teammates. Maybe Jay Baker was tired of talking about Jay Baker. He mentioned his fellow captains, Condon and Ramirez. Condon was a force in the playoff opener, pouring in six of his team-high seven goals in the second half. Senior and Centre (Kentucky) College swimming recruit Michael Hambleton (five goals, a plethora of blocks, a bunch of steals) emerged as the playmaker of the game. “Michael,” Baker said, “was all over the pool, wasn’t he? A great asset to have. So fast, does so many things for us. He creates opportunities, and he’s always talking. [ Junior] Kevin Donahue (goal, three assists) … now there’s a guy who understands the sport. He’s such an unselfish player. “I could not have asked for a better brotherhood, with a better camaraderie, than the one I am a part of this year.” Hours later, at home, it hit

him. Baker had not expressed his appreciation for the Scouts’ firstyear goalkeepers, juniors Jack McGlynn and Riley Perkofski. Baker found a keyboard and typed an email. A couple of his comments: “I have to give a lot of credit to our goalies,” he wrote. “They have adjusted extremely well to the sport and are definitely key components to our team. They have kept us in many games, and we can credit them for a few of our wins.” A good chunk of the Scouts has a knack for joking around, deflating the tension when the tension reaches too taut of a level. There is nothing wrong with that. Polo is a grueling sport. It is violent at times. It can be a blast, too, swimmers loving the chance to engage in a ball sport in the spring after enduring lap after lap after lap in the fall. Condon pointed out the team’s fun spirit after the rout of Vernon Hills.

Condon also pointed to the Scout who knows exactly when it is time to turn off the loosey-goosey switch and turn on the serious switch. “Jay means a lot to our team,” Condon said. “Good shooter, good motivator, an all-out, 100-percent-effort player. He’s also good at keeping us focused in practices, in games. It’s a good thing, having Jay around, having Jay as a teammate.” Notable: Lake Forest High School’s boys water polo team, seeded eighth in the Buffalo Grove Sectional, was scheduled to face top-seeded Stevenson in a sectional quarterfinal on May 11. … Additional significant statistics from the Scouts’ 21-8 defeat of visiting Vernon Hills (2-20) in a playoff opener on May 9: senior Dylan Bailey (two goals); junior Jack McGlynn (five saves); junior Riley Perkofski (nine saves, one lengthy assist).

randon Lew and Jeremy Learner are doubles partners today, a makeshift Highland Park High School tennis tandem because of senior David Aizenberg’s shoulder injury. Lew is a 5-foot-11, 160pound junior, Learner a 5-11, 130-pound freshman. Months before the start of the 2016 tennis season, College Park Athletic Club in Deerfield hosted an 18-and-under boys singles tournament. The finalists: Lew and Learner. Lew was seeded No. 1; Learner was unseeded. Each had heard of the other, nothing more. Virtual strangers. Lew, varsity veteran, won 6-4, 6-3 against a future teammate who was young enough to play in 14-and-under singles tournaments last spring. The good ones, the fearless ones, like to play older and bigger and better netters in tournaments every now and then. You get better that way, usually. Stronger. Lift heavier weights for one weekend, and the regular weights seem feathery when you

handle them the following weekend. “Jeremy did not back down in that match,” Lew recalls. “He made it really hard on me from the start to the finish.” The former foes are allies this spring, taking on top-notch doubles teams under the direction of Giants tennis coach Steve Rudman. Aizenberg, the team’s best doubles player, finished third at state in doubles (with 2015 graduate Max Gordon) last year. A doctor ordered the Giant to avoid playing in consecutive days this spring. The righty’s wounded right wing left Lew without a regular partner and forced Rudman to shuffle his deck of doubles pairings. Lew and Learner found themselves on the same side of the net for three consecutive weekends, beginning with the Jay Kramer Invitational at Hinsdale Central on April 23. They battled in the highly competitive Pitchford Invite on the following weekend, then at the Deerfield Invite on May 6-7. Their biggest wins to date came

against duos from Hinsdale South, Downers Grove South and Lake Forest High School. Lew/ Learner (8-4 overall) finished seventh-eighth in the No. 1/No.2 doubles draw at the Deerfield Invite, helping the Giants capture the team title. “We did not have great chemistry at first,” Lew admits. “Our third match together, against Lyons, about halfway through it, we started to figure each other out. We started to click. In another match, we got into it, yelling, ‘We got this!’ after points, jumping around, staying pumped.” Learner is more reticent than Lew is, by a lot. His age has something to do with that. He defers to his elders, respects his elders. He appreciates the opportunities to strike varsity shots against some of the best doubles players in the state and expand his game along the way. Learner is convinced Aizenberg’s shoulder will heal before the start of the state series, on May 20. He would have no problem stepping aside and playing wherever else he is needed

in Rudman’s lineup. “Jeremy,” Rudman says, “has great groundstrokes, and he’s getting more comfortable at the net. He returns serves really well, has a good idea what he want to do with them. Brandon is a great athlete, very aggressive. Loves the net, loves flying around. They set each other up. They complement each other very well. “I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen from them.” Every doubles team needs a take-charge guy, the guy who never hesitates to poach — either after a serve or in the middle of a point. Keep the boys on the other side of the net guessing, wondering, quivering. Lew is the motor of the Lew/Learner team, tireless and perpetually alert. Such verve can be contagious. He has goalkeeper-quick hands and a knack for finishing points. Lew lets Learner rip shots from the baseline. Lew cleans up matters near the net. Even better: Lew and Learner, side by side at the net, dare tandems to go for a tough passing shot or throw up a lob.

Rudman teaches “rubber band” doubles. If one player gets pulled toward an alley to answer an angled shot, his partner at the net must stretch likewise, thus reducing the gap created by the first player’s move. “Band of Brothers” isn’t just the name of an HBO series about the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. The in-sync-ness of a doubles pair often forces an opponent to go for low-percentage shots. Lew and Learner both enjoy playing basketball and Ping-Pong. Lew competes in a local prep basketball league, Learner in pick-up games. Lew has defeated Learner once or twice in PingPong. Learner has downed Lew once in Ping-Pong. “He gets every ball back,” each says of the other. They laugh. Together. They stop laughing. Together. It is clear. The good chemistry is there, even off the court, worthy of serving as a show-and-tell presentation in a laboratory setting. This Lew/Learner doubles thing is working out nicely.

Strings Attached to Music Man

arry Block enters Country Kitchen in Highland Park, his cumbersome and coveted cello in tow. The instrument is in a black case. In an upright position, it almost matches Block’s height. The founder and general manager of the Highland Park Strings slides into a booth at the restaurant, ready to talk, eager to entertain. His eyes, in full twinkle mode, announce, Have I got a story to tell you. The story is about his cello. “I brought it in here because it was stolen from my parked car in 1975,” Block says. “I was a lawyer in the city at the time, working in what was then the Sears Tower. I was in my office for a short time, maybe 10 minutes. I returned to my car; my cello was gone. It broke my heart. “The maker of the cello,” he adds, “called me in 2011, telling me somebody had found it in an alley. Thirty-six years later … I got my cello back. Can you believe that? I fixed it up. No major problems.” Block is 81 years old. Highland Park Strings, his chamber music ensemble, is 37. Block and about 35 other high-level amateur musicians (ages 25-81) will perform a free concert — the Strings’ third and final one of the 2015-16 season — at the Highland Park High School Auditorium on May 22. The community got its first earful of the Highland Park Strings in 1979, in a room at the

Park District of Highland Park, the Strings’ perennial sponsor. The troupe’s first coach was Francis Akos (aka “Ak”), then a Chicago Symphony Orchestra assistant concertmaster. Block and 11 others made beautiful music together during a holiday concert. “Thirty people showed up for our debut,” a beaming Block recalls, “and 29 of them were

members of my family.” Block practices or plays the cello every day. The 30-year resident of Highland Park plays tennis three times a week. He uses strings to produce soothing sounds in concert halls. He uses strings to crack loud winners in matches. He and his wife, Abby, a former full-time teacher and a current fabric artist, serve as grade-school substitute teachers for School District 112. Larry Block retired from his career as a corporate lawyer in 2003, but you get the feeling he has never been busier than he is today. Or happier. Music was his go-to outlet in between court cases. It is more than that now.

Tuition at NU in the 1950s was $200 per semester. “On the day I met her,” Larry, also a Northwestern University Law School graduate, says, “Abby said to me, ‘I would like you to meet my father.’ ” Larry met Abby’s father. Larry and Abby went on their first date shortly thereafter, the start of a four-year courtship. Mr. and Mrs. Block have three children and seven grandchildren. For her husband’s 50th birthday in 1985, Abby purchased the opportunity to conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Maybe Larry unwrapped a baton on that day. It was quite a gift. It cost way more than a dollar and less than a new car. “What a thrill that was,” says Block,. “It’s been a wonderful life. I’ve been lucky. I’ve been fortunate, grateful, to have music in my life. When I overcame cancer, people told me, ‘You survived because of your music.’ Maybe so. I like to tell people, ‘As a lawyer, I made a good living, but music has made my living good.’ ” The Highland Park Strings’ final free concert of its 2015-16 season (Season of Love) begins at 3 p.m. on May 22, at the Highland Park High School Auditorium (433 Vine Avenue, Highland Park). The community orchestra will perform music by Brahms and Mendelssohn. Internationally acclaimed pianist Alon Goldstein returns as soloist for the third time with the Strings.
