WINNETKA — fter he was paralyzed in a biking accident and told he would never walk again, Mark Stephan of Winnetka did more than walk. He climbed to top the of the Willis Tower and biked across the United States, raising over $1 million for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), which was instrumental in his progress. Stephan this month is being honored by The Volunteer Center for his contributions to RIC. “When you volunteer it is amazing how much you get back in return,” Stephan said. “It’s not about (me). It’s honoring all of the volunteers at RIC.” Beneath Stephan’s modesty lies the will of an extraordinary person who not only beat the odds but also achieved a life goal of bicycling across the country, despite his physical challenges. Stephan was an avid athlete when a bicycle accident in 2007 changed the course of his life. Before the accident, he ran 18 marathons, completed two Iron Man competitions and cycled regularly. It was during a weekend bike ride that Stephan’s front wheel unexpectedly disengaged and he was capitulated over the handlebars. After the accident, Stephan was told he was paralyzed from

he accolades keep coming for Bill McLean, sports reporter and features writer for DailyNorthShore.com and The North Shore Weekend newspaper. He recently received a 2016 Media Orthopaedic Reporting Excellence (MORE) Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which honors journalists who accurately report on bone and joint topics that foster public awareness of musculoskeletal health issues. McLean was chosen for his story “North Shore Doctors Leave Global Footprints.” He traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive the award at the academy’s national Orthopaedic Leadership Conference on May 5. McLean also has been honored for his sports writing. He won a prestigious Lisagor Award last year for the feature Bill McLean speaking at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

He visited a prominent physician whom he had met through cycling before the accident, with the hope that he would be given a different diagnosis. Once again Stephan was told he would never regain movement. “I was devastated. I was sobbing and emotionally a wreck. It was horrible,” Stephan said. At that time, Stephan’s four children were between the ages of 13 and 20. “It impacts more than just one person. It impacts your whole family,” he said. Instead of giving up hope, Stephan relied on his inner strength as an athlete to overcome the odds. Rather than viewing his treatment as therapy, he began to view it as training — something he was familiar with from his days running marathons. “I wanted to be treated like an athlete,” he said. Stephan sought treatment at RIC from therapists and personal trainers who shared his view and research scientists interested in experimentation. He and his wife, Margaret, decided he would do whatever it would take for the next five years. “I didn’t want therapy. I wanted a cure,” he said. Stephan began to work on his recovery at RIC five days a week, six to eight hours each day. He hasn’t SCHOOLS Cont. from PG 1

been cured, but he has regained some physical capabilities that his doctors earlier thought were totally lost. Located in Chicago, RIC is the nation’s No. 1 ranked rehabilitation hospital by U.S. News & World Report and U.S. National Institutes of Health, caring for thousands of patients with catastrophic injuries from around the world each year. Stephan attributes much of his progress to RIC’s integration of research and science in its rehabilitative therapy. Within two years of the accident, Stephan climbed 103 floors to the top of the Willis Tower in three and half hours — without the use of crutches. That accomplishment not only raised funds for RIC, but also allowed Stephan to realize his potential. “If you can do one flight of stairs, why not 100?” he asked. Next Stephan set his sights on bicycling cross-country, not only as a way to give back to RIC but also to achieve a personal goal. “I didn’t want people to say that guy is a quadriplegic. I wanted people to say that guy is a cyclist,” he said. A special recumbent tricycle was designed for Stephan, who initially practiced by cycling down his block in Winnetka. It took a while for him to build the endurance to ride one mile, but he kept at it, and through hard work he was able to accomplish his dream. things on the menu. “My wife and I decided we had to add chicken,” Rainey said. “We went around trying different chicken Caesar wraps and said we can make this. Our chef made a dressing better than any around.” When asked if he might add a turkey burger, Rainey said it was a possibility. “Maybe in around five years,” Rainey said. “If you want a chicken breast sandwich we can make it for you. It’s not on the menu.” The chili is also special, according to Rainey. It is something else that motivated change. He said Beinlich’s does a large take out business for occasions like the Super Bowl with its chili and coleslaw. Anyone who stops by Beinlich’s around the Fourth of July

will find the restaurant closed with a sign “gone fishing” on the door. The restaurant closes for two weeks a year around July 4th and another two weeks around Christmas. He does go fishing each summer. “Everyone who works here gets four weeks paid vacation and they know when it’s going to be, Rainey said. “I’m not going to make a liar out of the sign. I’m going to drop a pole in the water.” Another tradition that remains is the schedule, according to Rainey. He said the restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. He said everyone could count on Sunday and Monday off. Rainey said he installed a television above the bar five years ago and got some push back from a few longtime customers.

“‘Charlie (Beinlich) would be turning over in his grave, one of the customers said,” Rainey said. “I said Charlie never saw high definition.” Do not look for the Beinlich’s phone number on the restaurant’s website or in a directory. It is not there. That too is a tradition that has been around for 66 years, according to Rainey. “Charlie (Beinlich) didn’t want a patron’s wife calling and asking where her husband was,” Rainey said. Another thing remaining unchanged and is likely to stay that way is requiring cash payment. “We’ll start taking credit cards when they stop printing money,” Rainey said. “But we’re very accommodating,” he added pointing to a cash station machine near the front door.

n these dreary weeks between Spring Break travel and Memorial Day picnics, it’s obvious that my neighbors (like me) are knee-deep in spring cleaning.

Consider the well-loved couches and kettle grills that line our curbs on garbage day, the sacks of old clothing and toys waiting for hard-working charities to

And so it was after a long day of sorting through my own closets that I fired up the laptop and found myself reading an article from Elle Décor about the “13 things a woman should never, ever have” in her home. I was looking for inspiration to tackle the basement storage area the following morning. Respected designers warned readers against excessive frills (“it’s not sexy”), cheap bedding (“A refined woman should have nice linens”), and family photos by the bed (“not sexy”). But they also turned their noses up at inspirational quotes, calling them “self-help at a glance…a cry for help under every circumstance.” Well then hand me a tissue because there are great quotes from wise people throughout my house. My daughter’s room has a Shakespeare line about how she is little but fierce, and my kitchen reminds visitors that novelist Jane Austen believed

New Trier’s Cook advances to state meet in four events for the second year in a row BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

lex Cook was a volleyball player at New Trier, a onesport athlete, when she saw Mimi Smith run around and around and around the outdoor track on campus one day. The year was 2014, Cook’s junior year and Smith’s senior year. The Trevians’ varsity volleyball team was warming up outside before a practice. Smith kept running. Hard. With purpose. Cook kept observing. “It was mesmerizing, watching her train, watching her push herself,” Cook, now a senior, recalls. Smith had won the Class 3A state cross country championship in 2013. The previous spring, as a sophomore, she had been a part of the 3A state championship 3200meter relay team. Some accomplished athletes unpack their laurels and rest on them. Smith, clearly, had locked those up and asked somebody to hide the key in a country far, far away. Smith (NTHS, Class of 2015) now runs and trains hard at Wake Forest University. As a cross country runner. As a distance runner in track. Bess Cook, Alex’s mother, encouraged Alex, a 5-foot-8 volleyball setter, to give indoor track and field a try in the winter of 2015. Mom knew her daughter was fast. The daughter, convinced she’d play nothing but volleyball at New Trier when she was a freshman, signed up for the indoor track and field season and then for the spring track and field season. After an event in the brief indoor season, a teammate said to Cook, “Good job.” The voice belonged to Mimi Smith. “She spoke … to me,” Cook, still thrilled, says. Good job. Two words, two syllables. Fuel. Cook qualified for the Class 3A state meet in the long jump and in three relays last spring. She repeated the 4-for-4 day at the Niles West Sectional on May 12, finishing first in the long jump (personal-best 18-2) and helping a trio of relays — 400, 800, 1600 — take gold. Her jump distance

ranks seventh among state qualifiers, the 1600 relay (3:58.69) second. Cook served as the lead-off leg of the mile relay, followed by seniors Oona Jung-Beeman, Tara Smart and Johanna Glaaser. The quartet of Cook (leg No. 3), Glaaser, junior Kate Holly and senior Isabelle Robbins clocked a 1:44.1 — 11th fastest in the state — in the 800 relay. Cook (leg No. 3 again), Glaaser, Holly and freshman Emma Kirkpatrick combined for a first-place 49.12 in the 400 relay. An AC was scorching hot in Skokie. The state meet runs from May 19-21 at O’Brien Stadium on the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston. “Here’s all you need to know about Alex,” Trevians coach Bob Spagnoli says of the Middlebury College-bound trackster. “She’s in her second year of track, and she’s a captain. That says a lot. If we had 30 of her, I’d be able to sit back and enjoy an iced tea. She’s a tremendous student, a tremendous athlete. She’s got it all. She’s a tough competitor, but she’s a gentle leader. She’s a big sister to our young athletes, dedicated to the team.” Cook’s result in the long jump (18-2) at last week’s sectional got people talking, got jaws to descend. It came on her first try. It allowed her to rest up for her relay duties. Cook’s previous personal-best in the event was 17-10 ¼, set at the New Trier Invitational on April 30. “Alex is a tremendous competitor,” Trevians jumps/sprints coach Jamie Klotz says. “She attacks the board fearlessly, aggressively. She’s looking really good. When you get to work with an athlete who listens, who makes adjustments, it’s a big deal. Alex Cook is a big deal.” Cook had been a Wildcat Juniors Volleyball Club member for a couple of years when she opted to run and jump for medals in the spring. Her new sport and its time commitment meant she would have to join a different volleyball club. She became a member of Energy, based in Niles. The setter then helped the Trevians reach a

atch Lila Adler at a competition. She’s the extrovert. The outgoing one. The life of the party. She’s the mayor of Vaultville. The president of the Kappa Kappa Vaulta sorority. She has a way of turning a meet into a happening. Adler is the one fully engaged with coaches, teammates, fellow competitors and even sports writers. Immediately after the Loyola Academy pole vaulter completed her catapults at the Class 3A Niles West Sectional on May 12, Adler was hit with three interview requests. Bang, bang, bang. “I don’t mind,” she says. “I love talking. It’s one of my favorite things to do.” As last Thursday’s meet was unfolding — right smack in the middle of it — Adler was being Adler. Moments after Niles West’s Nicole Cho made the statequalifying height (10-3), she rushed over to the landing mat and was the first person to congratulate her. A show of sportsmanship? More than that. “I was happy for her. Nicole is awesome. She’s got so much potential,” Adler notes. “As a pole vaulter, your competition is going against the bar. It’s you versus the bar.” “We all cheer for each other. We go to camps together,” says Cho. “We’re competitive, but we all like each other. That’s what makes pole vaulting different from other sports.” Along the way, Cho has come to respect Adler greatly. “She’s an athlete,” says the Niles West junior. “But it’s her mindset that sets her apart. She’s always positive. She’s got the psychological aspect down.” She also has the commitment part down pat. “It’s her dedication,” says LA sophomore Julia McDermott, who finished in a tie for fifth in the sectional with a personal record (9-3). “I’ve always been inspired by her dedication. She makes me want to do better.” She might be about the elevation, but Adler has come to the realization that pole vaulters are

at their very best when they’re grounded. The ascending Rambler, who is in only her second season of pole vaulting, doesn’t leave home, doesn’t go airborne without her trusted Lokai bracelet. “I have to have it on,” Adler, her head tilted just slightly, says. The authentic Adler could be a spokesperson for the company.

Her product of choice is the clear Lokai: 24 clear beads, 1 white bead and 1 black bead. “The white bead is filled with water from Mt. Everest. The black bead [contains] mud from the Dead Sea,” says Adler. “One says to stay humble when you’re up, while the other one says to stay hopeful when you’re down.” Being balanced is the best way

to deal with the peaks and valleys of this grueling sport. Being good also helps. Her story, which includes an athletic scholarship to the University of California-Berkeley, is about as inspiring as a trip to the Adler Planetarium. A resident of Bucktown, she’s only a hop, skip and pole bend away from the worldclass museum.

Adler also is closing the distance on doing something big — real big — at this weekend’s Class 3A state meet in Charleston. The highly personable Rambler, who finished in a tie for eighth at last year’s state meet (11-0) claimed the sectional title at Niles West on May 12 by making 11-0 with relative ease. She’s looking up at the state favorite. Grayslake Central’s Katie Schroeder won a sectional title (12-3) at the Buffalo Grove Sectional on May 13. Clearing 12 feet, three inches would be no leap of faith for Adler. It’s not necessarily rare air. In an indoor quad meet at Glenbrook South on Feb. 9, she solved 12-0. And, on April 1, against national competition at Stanford University, she went 11-6 ¼ (4th place). But her season hasn’t been totally free and easy. A stress reaction on her spine had kept her off the runway. She returned to meet action on May 7 and took first place (10-6) in the GCAC Outdoor Championship. Adler worked hard to get back. “I wasn’t going to let the doctor say I was out for season,” she says. Besides, she had to get back. Meets — especially at this time of year — are way too much fun and vital to miss. Adler took a roundabout route to get to where she is today. She grew up playing soccer, volleyball and basketball. In fact, she was a varsity soccer player at LA during her freshman and sophomore years. “I thought soccer was my sport,” she says. Two years ago, she got, if you will, sidetracked following a short — and random — conversation with LA assistant track coach Ryan Gibbons. “I told him that I’d like to try out for pole vault,” says Adler. How bold. “Who does that?” she now says. “Who asks to be a pole vaulter?” Soon after that little chit-chat, Adler went … all in. She went up and over. In the past two years, Adler sought out high-level coaching and learned how to do handstands. Handstands? She was terrible at first. “I

couldn’t do ’em,” she says. Searching the internet solved that problem. They’ve got “howtos” for everything nowadays. And now, “I do 10 handstands every day. I’ve done 10 a day for a year,” she adds. Think about it. “Doing a handstand is almost like doing a pole vault,” says Adler. “Hers are perfect now,” says McDermott. “She can hold them for a while.” Like most elite vaulters, Adler went the extra mile(s) to receive top-notch instruction. Besides receiving help from Gibbons, she trained with GetVertical Pole Vault in Milwaukee and Jump High Athletic Club in Plainfield. Bob Cervenka is the vault guru at Jump High. He’s developed many a vaulter, including last year’s Illinois champ, Julia Junkroski of Lincoln-Way East (13-2). Her instruction team will get only better in the years to come. The coaching staff at Cal-Berkeley jumped on the idea of bringing her into the fold. “They recruited me on potential,” says Adler. Go ahead, raise the bar. Notable: Senior Kathryn House was Loyola’s other standout at the Niles West Sectional on May 13. She went home with two golds: 3200 meters (10:50.42) and 1600 meters (5:02.59). Her finish in the 3200 was unbelievable. It was 100-meters-like. House beat Lake Forest’s Brett Chody on a lastsecond lean. In the 1600, she won by more than 30 seconds. Teaming up with Jacqueline Topping, Annie Foley and Margot Dooley, House also anchored the 4x400 relay, which qualified to state (3rd, 4:03.11). … LA, which claimed runner-up honors (77 ½ points) behind New Trier (128), also advanced its 4x800 relay (4th, 9:30.31) with Dooley, Foley, Emily Plodzeen and Katie Carroll and its 4x200 relay (2nd, 1:46.76) with Riley Fitzgerald, Sophia Beresheim, Brooke Moran and Brooke Fitzgerald. … The Ramblers’ other sectional champ was senior Francesca LaTorraca in the shot put (38-0 ½). The team’s other state qualifier was Dooley in the 800 meters (3rd, 2:18.90).

he phone call came from New Trier boys assistant water polo coach Gerrit Adams. Trevians backup goalkeeper Cole Maziel was on the other end. Adams had some sobering news: the injury senior starting keeper Piers Braunrot had suffered in practice three days earlier, on April 11, was a broken left thumb, a season-ender. You need two healthy thumbs to be an effective goalie. Maziel, a junior and a first-year varsity member, had one more healthy thumb than Braunrot had. Maziel also had good genes (his father, Mark, played goalie for the University of California-Irvine men’s water polo team) and an impeccable work ethic. What also didn’t hurt: Braunrot’s presence and knowledge at practices and at games.

“Piers gets in the water, with his cast, and works with Cole,” New Trier senior hole set Will Kohr, a captain like Braunrot, said after a sectional game at Glenbrook South last weekend. “Piers is a great mentor for Cole, for the entire team.” Braunrot was a grossly underpaid assistant coach at Glenbrook South on May 13-14, making exactly zero dollars as New Trier (29-3-1) captured its third sectional championship in four years. He was in Maziel’s ear during timeouts and in between periods and when the ball was at the other end of the pool. Maziel might end up sounding just like Braunrot one day. The Trevians defeated Niles West 12-3 in a semifinal on May 13 and edged the host school 8-7 on May 14, advancing to a scheduled state quarterfinal against

Fremd at Stevenson on May 19. Maziel stopped two Glenbrook South penalty shots in the sectional final, one in each half. One such save can deflate the opponent. Two? Too demoralizing. “Staying balanced, staying focused,” Maziel said of the keys to denying a penalty shot. Maziel’s season essentially started when Adams called last month. The assistant coach did not just inform Maziel of Braunrot’s tough break. “He gave me a pep talk,” Maziel said. Braunrot took over from there, refusing to sulk about his misfortune and embracing the opportunity to embolden his replacement. He and the new starter watched film together. The new starter received invaluable tips from the former starter. Three functioning

One dandy tandem. “Cole’s work ethic has been phenomenal; Piers has been a super senior leader,”Trevians head coach David Rafferty-Flatter said. “We wanted to have a backup goalie ready to go this year because of what our school’s girls team went through last year [then junior Lauren Engelhard filled in admirably for then senior starter Keelin Frank at the end of the regular season last spring]. Developing Cole, preparing Cole early, was a just-in-case decision.” New Trier’s win against Glenbrook South in the sectional final was its fourth in as many meetings between the schools this spring. Trevians junior Henry Yavitt scored three goals, including the last one in the first half and the first one in the second half. Senior Charlie Ryan added two goals,

and Kohr and juniors Danilo Scekic and Mason McQuet tallied one apiece. A Scekic penalty shot broke a 4-4 tie in the third quarter. Ryan’s goal in the fourth quarter, following a Kohr steal, was the game-winner. “Will Kohr told me, late in the game, ‘I’m really tired,’ ”RaffertyFlatter said. “He also told me, ‘Don’t take me out.’ ” The coach did not rest Kohr. “This could have been my last game,” the Northwestern-bound Kohr said. “I did not want to end my water polo career at New Trier on the bench.” Scekic beat Niles West’s keeper a team-high four times in the first sectional semifinal on May 13. Ryan threw in a pair of goals in the 12-3 triumph. The Trevians notched five unanswered goals from the 5:08 mark of the third

quarter to the 3:49 mark of the fourth quarter. “We pushed the counterattack really hard,” Scekic said. “We kept pushing it, pushing it. Niles West got tired in the second half. We’re deep. [McQuet] is a very good hole guard, and we also applied pressure on the outside.” Scekic trained for three weeks in polo-mad Serbia last summer. One week into the grueling experience, he thought about turning in his polo cap. The thought faded. He stuck with it. Scekic plans to return to Serbia for more training this summer, but not for three weeks. “Ten weeks,” the 6-foot, 185pounder said. New Trier girls Continued on PG 58

here was plenty of fascination with the roster. Four sets of twins? On the same varsity water polo team? How rare is that? “It was a unique situation,” said Highland Park High School coach Danny Weinberg. But that wasn’t this squad’s only cool distinction. This team also proved to be pretty good. Twenty-six-and-three good. “To see us go full circle was a pretty awesome thing to watch,” Weinberg said. “We had a 2-22 record four years ago [in the team’s first season of existence after being a co-op squad with Deerfield].” Win No. 27 would’ve been nice. It also would’ve been monumen-

tal. The Giants fell 15-2 to mighty Stevenson — the reigning state champion — in the sectional championship game at Buffalo Grove on May 14. “This game was a little nostalgic,” said Weinberg. “In the past, we used to lose a lot of games this way. But not this year. This was the first time all year that we’ve been blown out. “It was a big accomplishment to get this far,” the coach added. HP was powered on offense by a twin turbo: Emma and Natalie Gelberg. And the senior sisters clicked. Emma led the team with 88 goals. Natalie, who will swim at Carthage College next year, finished with 76 goals. “They were our drivers,” said

Weinberg. “We positioned them on the same side of the pool. Word eventually got out that they were pretty good.” The team’s other leading scorers were Danni Cole (25 goals), Arianne Cole (19 goals) and Molly Solem (16 goals). “By the end of the year, Danni became one of our most complete players,” Weinberg said. “Arianne also stepped up in a huge way.” Led by junior goalie Abbey Hodges, HP also shined on the defensive end. The Giants allowed less than five goals per game. “Good things happen when you keep the score low,” said Weinberg. “And that was largely due to Abbey’s stellar job in goal.” The coach considered Molly Solem as the team’s best defend-

er.

“She did a lot of good things,” Weinberg said. “Things that don’t show up in the box score.” Other key contributors included senior Carlie Fox, junior Julia Solem and sophomore Noa Cole. The Giants opened postseason play on May 12 with a 6-2 sectional quarterfinal victory over Deerfield. Emma Gelberg, Natalie Gelberg and Danni Cole scored two goals each. Then, on May 13, HP took care of Libertyville 9-3 in the semifinal round. Emma Gelberg tossed in four goals. Natalie struck twice. Highland Park’s other highlights on the season included tourney titles at Maine South and Deerfield. Then, after taking first

place in the Central Suburban League North Division, the Giants placed third in the CSL Tournament, losing to Evanston 6-4 in the semifinals and beating Maine West in the third-place game. “Nearly beating Evanston was huge for us,” said Weinberg. “We look at New Trier and Evanston as next-level competition.” Weinberg let it be known earlier this season that he would not be returning. A 2006 HPHS grad, he is taking a job as a wilderness therapist in Oregon. “I’ll be working with high-risk teenage kids,” said Weinberg, “There won’t be a lot of Xs and Os.” In addition to being the girls water polo coach, Danny Wein-

berg has served as head coach for the Highland Park Aquatics Club (HPAC) since 2010. “I’ve loved what I’ve been doing here,” said Weinberg. “I fell in love with the job. I fell in love with the kids. Coaching kids is my calling.” Ah, the life of Weinberg. Before heading to Oregon, Weinberg will fulfill a lifelong dream. He’s taking a nine-week vacation to Europe. Norway and the Swiss Alps are two of his destinations. Lake Forest High School’s Boyd — an IHSA All-State Academic honoree — keeps a healthy perspective when it comes to athletics BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

nika Boyd heard the warning, right before the start of her freshman year at Lake Forest High School. Boyd was anxious and excited in the summer of 2012, going through orientation, taking everything in, her eyes getting wider by the minute in a hallway at a school that probably had the look and feel of a university to a recent middle school graduate. A senior had delivered the friendly piece of advice. “It will fly by,” the senior said, referring to Boyd’s four years at LFHS. It is May 2016. Already. Boyd, now a senior, is standing next to the pole vault station at Niles West High School near the end of a Class 3A girls track and field meet. She had cleared a personal-bestmatching 9-feet-9 in the event on May 12, good for third place. She had landed a seventh-place 32-9 ½ in the triple jump. Her prep track and field had just ended in Skokie. Her prep gymnastics career had ended in the winter. Her prep diving career had ended in the fall. Four years, three sports, eight varsity letters — three each in track and gymnastics. That senior was right, dead on. Yes, it flew by … at the speed of an SST-jet. Boyd flashes back. It is her freshman diving season, leaves falling outside. She is on a board in a practice, thinking about executing a reverse dive. All of her diving teammates are in the water, bobbing and encouraging a jittery diver who had never completed a reverse dive in her life. It is the seventh week of the season. Boyd continues to think on the board. “It’s blowing my mind,” the 5-foot-4 Boyd recalls. “I’m freaking out.” Boyd completes the dive. Her teammates surround her. Boyd has a difficult time exiting the pool. That will happen when six of your teammates insist on hugging you before you climb out of a pool. “That’s a moment I will never forget,” Boyd says. “It was magical, all of those girls supporting me, being there for me.” Boyd returns to the present. She looks down at the inside of her left elbow. It features a green tattoo of a pine tree, an 18th birthday gift to herself, with approval from her parents, Kara and Patrick. There is

in the way of her performances at meets. If I tell Anika something, tell her to try something in a practice or at a meet, she’s always ready with an, ‘OK.’ She goes for it. She’s always confident.” Away from the track, away from the gymnastics mats, away from the diving boards, Boyd is introspective, engaging, bright. Her plan is to go out for the women’s track and field team at Wash U and hit the books as hard she plants her pole in the embedded box at the end of vault runway. She also hopes her next four-year academic journey does not travel as quickly as her most recent one did. No jet to 2020, please. A comfy bike would be fine. “What really impresses me about Anika is the way she thinks things out when she’s not competing, along with how easygoing she is as a teammate,” Darraugh says. “She says thoughtful things, meaningful things. Anika doesn’t say or do anything irrationally. That’s good in sports and in life.” Notable: The Lake Forest High School girls track and field team finished third (53 points) at the Class 3A Niles West Sectional on May 12, behind runner-up showings from sophomore Brett Chody (3200-meter run, 10:50.46) and junior Haley Click (300 low hurdles, 46.61) and a second-place effort in the 1600 relay (4:02.42; sophomore Grace Bentley, Click, senior Katie Condon and sophomore Emma Millburn). The mile relay unit ranks seventh among state qualifiers in the event. science—doubling up some years in certain subjects so they can do this.” Having been a product of public high school education herself (when Edmunds was a child, parents needed to register for Woodlands at birth—a fact her parents didn’t know), she believes in single-sex education for girls more than ever. “Sacred Heart has always been about relationships. It’s the relationships that we establish with the girls that are really critical and wonderful,” Edmunds offers. “I think there’s nothing more important than for girls to have this time in in their lives to figure out who they are as young people. The research says that, as well. I know some voice concern about our girls moving on to a bigger college environment and whether they will be ready. But they are. They want to be heard. One of my greatest joys has been watching the students come to us as very little girls and developing into beautifully articulate, strong, y o u n g women, and going out

into the world and making their mark. It’s the thing I’m most proud of.” As for the next chapter Edmunds is about to write, for now—the pages are blank. “Years ago, Gwen Gregory [a former colleague] had a little retreat for us up north with people who had retired or people who were thinking about it,” Edmunds says. “And this nun who ran it said something to me that left a lasting impression. She explained that most people spend their lives doing for other people, doing for their work. But when they retire, they finally have the chance to just be and figure out what they want their relationship to be with God. That really stuck with me because I think that’s so true. It was very profound.” When asked if Edmunds wishes she had done anything differently in her time at Woodlands, her answer may surprise you. “I don’t think so. I can truly say I have been blessed. This has been a vocation for me and I have loved every minute I’ve been here. I still feel like I did when I was 5-years-old peering into school windows, hardly able to wait until I could go to school myself. That’s how I’ve felt every day of my years here at Woodlands. I truly couldn’t wait to come to work.”
