HIGHWOOD: Highwood Evening Markets — This vibrant party in the park has become a tradition for friends and family seeking great food, entertainment, and shopping. Highwood Evening Markets will be held Wednesdays from 4 to 9 p.m. through Aug. 31. in Everts Park. TECHNO LUXURY

The homebuyer of today is definitely concerned with keeping up—not with the Joneses, perhaps, but with the ever-changing face of technology. A fully appointed den or media room used to be an important selling point in a home—today, these things are de rigueur, standard in nearly every home on the market. In order to increase the market appeal of your home and be competitive with other homes of comparable structure, size and amenities for sale in your area, the new key selling point of a property is the home office. Once a rarity, the home office has evolved into the home’s hub and center of operation and activity, often controlling every technological amenity of the house from one room. Modern home automation systems link lighting, heating and air conditioning systems, as well as audio-visual equipment, security systems and the scheduling of television, recording systems, stereo equipment and lighting fixtures. The modern home office isn’t just for business professionals, technological connoisseurs, or the higher-earning set, either. Today’s home technology features are high-end home amenities that are available across a wide range of budgets, turning an average home into an above-average home when it hits the market, giving tech-savvy dwellings a competitive market edge. Take a look at your home’s wiring, routing and see what simple upgrades you could implement that would simplify your day-to-day living while you’re in the home, and that could add top-dollar value to your home when it comes time to put it on the market. Ask yourself: Is your home techno-ready? For professional advice from an experienced Realtor, call Jean Wright at (847) 217-1906 or email at jwright@jeanwright.com

this,” Collins said. “If we do this Lake Bluff will no longer be unique. This will transform us into something else. I hear all the people here and we have to keep our small town beauty.” PCZBA members quizzed

Kyte about whether he could reduce the square footage or the number of condominiums or build a two-story building. Kyte said those changes would not make economic sense. He did say he planned to make an effort to

make some of the alterations requested. “I need to study it,” Kyte said after the meeting. “The (PCZBA) wants some things and we’re going to see what we can do about size and scale.”

“The Typo-chondriac”

W

hen you type something, then read back what you wrote, you might find you’ve made little mistakes called “typos.” Short for “typographical errors.” People these days see a lot of typos. In their words, and in the words of others. This is because writing has become influenced by the fastpaced, loosey-goosey style of texts, emails, social media posts and desktop publishing. Sure, you can run “spell check,” but sometimes you just don’t. The world of words is pretty much awash in typos. There’s a former English teacher on the North Shore who’s a natural at spotting typos. If you showed her your writing on a regular basis, you’d eventually become a “typochondriac.” A word coined just now, meaning “a person overly worried about typos.” This typo-guru lady has been known to discover misspelled words in movie credits as they crawl on the screen. She finds them in news broadcasts. Even in published books, magazines, newspapers and outdoor ads. She pointed out that Priscilla Avenue, a street in Highland Park, was misspelled on its own street sign! It read “Priscillia.” You could have lived there for years, and never noticed. Typos don’t cause much trouble; most people don’t catch them. Or maybe such little mistakes have just become the “new normal” in today’s word-world. But, trying to create a chunk of writing without them can make you a typochondriac, and you need to see a proof-reader about that. Is there a typo in this week’s colum? Could be, although you might not spot it. After all, chances are you’re not saddled with typochondria, like some of us.

Disotto: New Take on Classic Italian BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

HIGHWOOD — isotto is filled with old world charm and traditional Italian dishes with fresh ingredients. The newest restaurant in the Francesca Restaurant Group, Disotto opened in April on the site that previously housed PM Prime and was the prior home of Gabe Viti’s namesake Gabriel’s for nearly 20 years at 310 Green Bay Road. Scott Harris, founder of the Francesca Restaurant Group, worked with Viti at The Signature Room At The 95th in the John Hancock Building in the 80s. Harris said Viti called to let him know that the space was available, and he liked the idea of opening a restaurant in Highwood. “I wanted a simple menu that went back to the basics,” said Harris, who founded the first Mia Francesca Restaurant almost 25 years ago. He shared his philosophy with the Disotto staff, “you might not be the best servers right now, but you’ll be the happiest. I taught them the ‘Five Second Rule:’ look the customers in the eye give them a smile and ask how their day was.” Disotto marks the third North Shore addition to the Francesca’s Family of Restaurants, which includes Francesca’s North at 1145 Church Street, Northbrook, and Francesca’s Intimo at 293 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest. General Manager Edgar Lincoln said they wanted to have a “rustic-wine-cellar-feel to the

years, and corporate chef Dan Harris (Scott’s nephew) has also been with FRG for several years, said Lincoln. Lincoln said Disotto is ready to open its outdoor dining in a gated section adorned with plants and flowers near the front entrance. It’s first come/first served, with no reservations. Lincoln explained that he started as an intern and worked his way up to a manager at a few of the Gold Coast locations, primarily at Francesca’s on Taylor Street, until he left the organization a few years ago. “I came back specifically to do this project with Scott Harris,” he said. Harris began assisting his dad in carpentry after school when he was in sixth grade, but became inspired when he worked with his mom as a dishwasher at a restaurant on the South Side of Chicago. “Stretch the chef at Fox’s Pub took a liking to me, and I opened Mia Francesca on Clark Street when I was 27 in 1992,” he Chef Daniel Harris (left). SOCIALS BENJAMIN MARSHAL SOCIETY’S BIG BEN BASH Photography by Charles Osgood

Benjamin Marshall, the historic architect who contributed to beautiful structures on the North Shore and Chicago, was feted by supporters of the society named in his honor this past May, held at the Drake. Philanthropist Richard Driehaus and Benjamin Marshall Society president Jane Lepauw were keynote speakers, with entertainment provided by the Stanley Paul Quartet, with a special appearance by singer Ava Cherry. The crowd mingled with descendants of the architect, as the event debuted a fourcolor coffee table book on Marshall’s historic work in Chicago, entitled Benjamin Marshall: Chicago Architect.

GOING FOR THE JUGULAR Fauntleroy displayed relentlessness in New Trier’s run to state runner-up showing BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

B

illy Fauntleroy is studying in the kitchen at home. It is where his mother, Mindy, wants him to study. It is noisy there, busy, full of distractions. A college setting is noisy, busy, full of distractions. Mom figures his son — a New Trier senior-to-be and the starting right side hitter for the volleyball team that finished runner-up at state last month — might as well get accustomed to finding ways to block out various degrees of hubbub, while studying, now. Billy needs to take a study break. He pushes himself away from a book or a tablet, stretches his 6-foot-7, 175-pound frame and grabs three objects. “Mom,” he says, “watch this.” The objects in his hands are juggling balls. One is red. One is yellow. One is green. The Billy Fauntleroy Show is about to begin in front of an audience of one, right there in the kitchen. He juggles them traditionally, the balls flying and circulating in front of him and above his head. He later juggles between the legs. When is that circus coming to United Center? And does Fauntleroy have an agent? Fauntleroy, in a way, also got tossed around during the 2016 volleyball season. He started as an outside hitter. He became a middle blocker. He ended up as a right side hitter. “Got bounced around,” Fauntleroy, not at all upset about the shifts, says. “I settled in at right side.” Did. He. Ever. Fauntleroy pounded 223 kills in the spring, including 10 in a three-set defeat of Lincoln-Way East in a state quarterfinal on June 3. His number of kills in the season ranked third behind senior outside hitters Henry Lindstrom (280) and Peter Hindsley (231). None of Fauntleroy’s teammates got more animated and demonstrative than he did after huge kills in huge

feated JV team in 2015 and New Trier’s one-loss Freshman A team in ’14. “They’re all competitive guys, very competitive. The facility has six courts, all devoted to volleyball. It can take an hour and a half.” New Trier’s volleyball boys (36-6) lost 25-15, 25-15 to Glenbard West’s Hilltoppers (42-0) in the state title match on June 4. The next day? Fauntleroy traveled to Adversity for a practice. “What a great experience, our team taking second at state,” he says. “I’m going to remember everything about that weekend for a while.” Lindstrom plays club volleyball for Adversity 18 Purple. Ramblers basketball team will miss stylish guard BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

H

e was a treat to watch, a true crowd pleaser. Thus, the Loyola Academy boys basketball team will miss Andre White Jr.’s flair and talent next season. The highly skilled sophomore guard, who brought an unbelievable amount of energy to the court, will not return to the Ramblers. White has transferred to Harvest Christian Academy in Elgin where he will play for his dad, Andre White Sr. “He’s a fun player to watch,” Loyola Academy head coach Tom Livatino said. “He plays the game with a lot of pizzazz.” White has the ability to charge up a crowd. At 5-foot-7, he plays the game at a dizzying pace and in all-out fashion. “It’s a loss for us … his best days are ahead of him,” Livatino said. “He’s got a very high skill set. “And he’s a great kid, a great player. We like him and his family very much,” added the coach. “And now, he’s got a chance to play for his dad. I’m excited for him. He’s got a bright future. And I wish him all the best.” Andre White Sr., who will be in his first year at Harvest Christian (2015-16 enrollment: 144), was an amazing guard at ZionBenton High School. An allstater and four-time all-North Suburban Conference player, he was known for his slick ballhandling and three-point shooting. The same goes for his son. Andre White Jr., who broke into the starting lineup as a freshman, tossed up 110 three-point attempts last winter — and was good on 40 of them (35 percent). He had a nice all-around game: 48 assists (2nd on the team), 31 steals (2nd on the team), 43 deflections (2nd on the team) and 53 rebounds (4th on the team). White especially came on strong during postseason play. He had 11 points in LA’s regional championship loss to Notre Dame 52-50 on March 4. He drained a clutch three-pointer in the waning seconds as the Ramblers put together a valiant comeback attempt. White is playing his summer basketball with Mac Irvin Fire, one of the elite club teams in the Midwest. Meanwhile, the Ramblers are looking ahead to the 2016-17

season. They advanced to the Final Four of their own Rambler Shootout last weekend. After finishing 3-0 in pool play with wins over Libertyville, Ridgewood and St. Viator, they fell to Benet Academy in the semifinal round on June 18. “We’ve been playing very good basketball,” said Livatino, who returns 10 seniors, including Division I prospect Ramar Evans. Evans, a 6-3 combo guard, will be a three-year starter for the Ramblers this winter. He also has been a standout for his club team: Hoop Avenue Elite. He earned all-tourney honors at the AllOhio Nike Super Sixteen tourney in late May. Evans has several visits lined up, including stops at Brown University and Massachusetts Lowell. He will attend the upcoming Holy Cross Elite Camp. Other LA players to keep an

eye on include seniors Matt Lynch and Julian DeGuzman and junior Kevin Cunningham.

HEAVY (LA)CROSSE TO BEAR Lake Forest High School’s Johnston remains upbeat despite tough injury woes BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

C

ole Johnston enters a Starbucks in Lake Forest on crutches. It is a Friday morning, a sunny, warm day in late spring. Two days ago he had undergone surgery on his right knee to fix a torn meniscus, a lacrosse injury. His older sister, Sydney, has accompanied him because she can drive a car and he cannot. Cole’s right leg is in no condition to operate a gas pedal and a brake pedal. His voice? Fine. He will use it to answer questions about all kinds of topics for a local publication. The Lake Forest High School senior-to-be was going to play in lacrosse tournaments this summer and teach lacrosse to Lake Forest Lacrosse Association kids this summer and attend varsity preseason football practices this summer. Was, was, was.The 5-foot11, 180-pound lacrosse middie/ football wideout injured the knee in the second quarter of Lake Forest’s 16-12 loss to Naperville Central in the second round of the lacrosse state playoffs on May 26. He won’t be able to give his crutches their walking papers for another seven weeks. He faces four months of rehab. Johnston sits on a chair in Starbucks and rests his right leg on another chair. He should be bitter. He is not. He’d be excused for giving short answers. He gives thoughtful, lengthy answers. He’d be excused for choosing not to smile. He smiles. Many times. “Whatever life throws at you, deal with it, respond to it the best way possible,” Johnston says. “That’s my attitude. That’s how I’m dealing with this. I have a strong support system at home. I have great friends, teammates and coaches.” Johnston moved from Ridgefield, Connecticut, to Lake Forest before his first day of fourth grade. Lax on the East Coast is skiing in Colorado and cotton candy at carnivals. Popular. He handled a lacrosse stick for the first time in the first grade, maybe in the second grade, in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. He threw and caught lacrosse balls with his big brother, Jesser. Not long after Cole landed in the Land of Lincoln and snow blanketed the North Shore, he had one pressing question:

“the smallest and the weakest player on the team,” his son shares. He certainly wasn’t the slowest player on the team. Walt Johnston started all four years for the Leopards. The unassuming freshman was named Lafayette’s Rookie of the Year. Cole Johnston, throughout the 2016 lacrosse season, his junior season, in two words: key player. He ranked second among teammates in goals and ranked in the top three among teammates in assists. The IHSLA named him a second-team all-stater. “A natural athlete, with a really good first step,” Thiergart says of Johnston, named one of four captains for the 2017 season. “That first step of his … you never know where he’s going. He was kind of in the background [as a freshman and as a sophomore]. Not anymore. The older he gets, the more attention he draws, long stick middies always on him. His role will change [in ’17]. I see him leading in a lot of ways and making his teammates even better than he made them [in ’16].” A teammate and good friend, senior-to-be Jack Adams, a long stick middie, thinks the world of Johnston’s athleticism, the combination of speed and body control and instincts often proving too formidable to contain in any sport not involving a certain kind of ball and a hoop. “Cole,” Adams says, “is brutal in basketball. In other sports he’s seen as freakishly good. He’s an allaround great athlete. In lacrosse he’s great at defense, great at dodging, with good moves and a very good shot. Tough, too. He’d never take himself out of a game, even if he’s hurting.” Johnston hurt his left shoulder MIDDIE TO THE MAX: Lake Forest High School’s Cole Johnston will play his college lacrosse at the University of Maryland. in the summer before his freshman PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGE PFOERTNER. year. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

New Theatre Takes Center Stage BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

S

teve Malone, 57 years old today, can still hear the applause. It was for him, a sixth-grader at the time, the scarecrow in a theatre production of The Wizard of Oz at Golf Junior High School in Morton Grove. He had just finished singing, “If I Only Had a Brain”. The sound all those hands were making for Malone? Music, to Malone. Sweet, life-changing music. “I got goose bumps as I listened to it,” Malone recalls over an order of pancakes and a glass of orange juice at Egg Harbor Café in Lake Forest. “That was such a rush. I welled up. A teacher had appointed me to be a stage manager/assistant director for the musical. I was humming a song backstage one day when somebody asked me to audition for the scarecrow role. I got the role. Then I got the acting bug. “I experienced, at a young age, both sides of theatre, backstage and onstage. Backstage was not where I wanted to be.” Malone’s new venture requires a brain and a heart and courage, or The Wizard of Oz hat trick. The longtime Chicagoan is Managing/Artistic Director of Lake Forest Theatre, the North Shore’s newest theatre company. The first production of its inaugural season, The Secret Garden, opened June 10 (and runs through July 2) at John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. Malone’s plan is to stage plays and musicals there for at least a year and build a permanent home for Lake Forest Theatre at a site to be determined. “I did some research and found there was room for 15 more theatres in this area,” Malone says.

“Another source informed me there was room for only four more. As long as there was room for one more theatre company, I was happy. The goal is to put on productions that are familyfriendly. We don’t want parents in the audience putting their hands over their kids’ eyes and ears. I see us eventually performing in a 700-seat auditorium, a good size. I see it looking like a mini Lincoln Center [in New York].” Malone moved from Chicago to Lake Forest in mid-April. His Chicago home had two rooms. His current home, at 6 0 0 Broadsmoore Drive, houses 28 rooms — and doubles as Lake Forest Theatre’s rehearsal space. A fundraiser evening on Oct. 31, “Halloween Masquerade Ball,” will be held there, as will “Holidays Around the World,” 12 nights of holiday singing and merriment (between Dec. 5-24). “We had 42 people in there one day, all over the place,” Malone says. “One made spaghetti for the actors before a rehearsal, and there was a tutor there, helping a kid. I’m excited. More than 300 people auditioned for 240 roles. Good actors aren’t easy to find; I got everybody I wanted. The cast [for The Secret Garden], it’s phenomenal. There won’t be a dry eye around during two or three of the songs. My music director, Aaron Kaplan,

producer called Malone at IU. “I’m in a hallway, in Bloomington, Indiana, on a phone used by other students, and students are all around me, walking by and talking. This is way before the invention of cell phones. I’m listening to this producer, and I hear, ‘Can you get to New York?’ I graduated. I got to New

works with the orchestras at Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South [high schools]. He’s 28 and he’s brilliant. He made a commitment to me for a year. So did my lighting and sound people.” A meandering path, compared to the route Malone traversed to get to where he is today, is a straight one. The student-gymnast-thespian at Niles North High School in Skokie became a business major-thespian at

Indiana University in Bloomington. While at IU he wrote, once a week, for countless weeks, to “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels. He scribbled a skit idea on a 4-by-6 index card each week and stuck a stamp on the other side of it. The hope was to impress Mr. Michaels and land a gig as an SNL writer. Malone waited and waited and waited for a response. Nothing. Finally, a

York. I worked as an NBC intern for three months in the summer. It was a sales development/training internship. They later hired me [in sales], and my salary was $13,500. In New York. That was tough. I had to use all of one paycheck to pay for my utilities.” Malone worked in advertising and sales for WMAQ-TV in Chicago and other network affiliates in the country, including one in Birmingham, Alabama, and

became national sales manager of a nascent network named FOX. Malone turned 35. He wanted to do something else. He owned Citizen Canine, a bed and breakfast for dogs based in Lincoln Park. It was a huge hit, the bark of the town in the dog community. Dogs ate well, slept well, swam in the Citizen Canine pool. “I tell people,” Malone says, ‘I swam with the sharks in New York and with the dogs in Chicago.’ ” He sold the B & B for pooches and then dipped his toe in real estate waters, obtaining his license in 2001. In between showings and closings, mostly in Chicago, he continued to act in community theatre in Chicagoland. His numbers to date, onstage: 40-plus years, more than 85 productions. Look for him to recite lines and entertain from Oct. 7-30, as a cast member in Lake Forest Theatre’s Young Frankenstein. He will hear that music from the audience, again, rounds and rounds of applause inside John & Nancy Theater. The sound will make the Golf Junior High product smile and bow and tingle. “This is a dream come true, starting a theatre company,” Malone says. “And I get to do what I love to do in a wonderful setting. The trees in Lake Forest are beautiful, the lake … also beautiful. The people here, they’re all for the addition of a theatre company. “Every person I’ve met in Lake Forest has been friendly. Every person I’ve met here has been memorable.” Visit lakeforesttheatre.com for performance dates and times, ticket prices and more information.
