Police: Thieves Targeting North Shore

FROM SOFTBALL BROTHERHOOD TO BUDDY BASEBALL BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

HIGHLAND PARK— f you ask members of North Suburban Synagogue (NSS) Beth El about Michael Salberg, they’ll probably remember how he sang and did impressions at the talent show a few years ago. He’s also brought many interesting programs to the NSS Beth El Men’s Club, and had everyone in stitches during his acceptance speech when he was honored as “Man of the Year” in 2011. But when it comes to softball, Salberg takes his job as commissioner very seriously. Salberg along with other members from NSS Beth El started the first synagogue-only league in Highland Park three years ago because “we wanted a league for Jewish men for the purpose of fraternity and brotherhood,” he said. “This year I decided that we should also be about tzedakah, which is the Hebrew word for charity.” The next step was asking the captains from the nine participating synagogues to submit ideas for charities. “We decided on the Friendship Circle of Buddy Baseball in Israel, which allows special needs children to participate in sports with the help of a buddy,” said Salberg. “There is a Buddy Baseball League in Buffalo Grove, which has been a huge success. It’s run by one of my classmates, Dean Klassman and the new Israeli program needed the funds.” To support the Friendship Circle of Buddy Baseball in Israel, each of the 12 teams in the league will donate funds. “My goal is to raise $500 a team, which would be $6,000,” said Salberg. “Certain Men’s Clubs like

man in New Trier’s traditional dress code of a white tuxedo coat and black bow tie, staring unflinchingly out at his assembled peers, showing by example how to step into a nerve-wracking situation and own it. The philosophy he applied to his speech is one he refined over his high school track career, preparing as best he could and focusing in the moment. His sophomore year, running the 1600-meter Fre s h m a n Sophomore Finals at the Highland Park Twilight Invitational, his main goal was to set the pace for teammate Jared Meyer, to help him get his final time down under five minutes. With each successive lap, he focused in on that goal and ramped up the pace a little more. That’s how Clabby came in first, with Meyer right behind him. They both came in under five minutes. Setting the pace is a good way to think of his commencement

address. Setting the pace for his peers to embrace the unknown as they head away from home into their first year of college. Setting the pace for New Trier’s incoming freshman to not simply settle into a comfort zone, to use their high school experience to branch out and try something new. “One thing I addressed to the younger kids is that it’s very normal to be uncomfortable,” Clabby says. “While there’s no way of avoiding it, knowing that everyone is uncomfortable can sometimes ease the tension a little bit. And you’ll eventually be much happier looking back on uncomfortable situations and thinking about how much you’ve grown from them. Try not to avoid, but even seek out those uncomfortable situations.” Next year, Clabby sets off to face his next challenge, studying engineering at the University of Virginia, with his sights set on preparation, focus, and embracing new experiences.

NEWS SOFTBALL Cont. from PG 1 NSS Beth El, and North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, also known as the ‘Torahnados’ are going to match what their teams donate.” When the league began three years ago, Salberg said there were five synagogues and six teams, (NSS Beth El had two teams). This year the league has grown to nine participating synagogues with a total of 12 teams. The teams on the North Shore include North Shore Congregation Israel, Glencoe; NSS Beth El and Congregation Solel both in Highland Park; Congregation Beth Shalom and Temple Beth-El both in Northbrook; and Beth Hillel Congregation B’nai Emunah Wilmette. The other synagogues are in Buffalo Grove, Long Grove and Vernon Hills. Salberg said over 200 players play on the 12 teams. Each team has between 13 to 20 players who range from 18 to 65 years of age. The average age is about 45. “Despite injuries we keep playing because we love playing 12-inch softball. We do allow pinch runners if players are too sore to run,” he added. Some notable players in the league include State Representative Scott Drury, who plays for Congregation Solel, and former NFL player Brent Novoselsky, who plays for Temple Chai in Long Grove. The games were originally played in Highland Park, but once the league doubled in size they had to move to Northbrook for the extra space. “The Park District of Highland Park didn’t have enough fields to

The league now plays at Techny Park in Northbrook on Sundays, and it’s already into the first quarter of the season. “The Northbrook Park District has done a great job on their quality fields.” Prior to this league, the NSS Beth El Men’s Club had been playing in the Park District of Highland Park’s 12-inch softball league for 18 years. Salberg wondered, “Why couldn’t there by a

NEWS

Four unlocked vehicles and an envelope with $1,000 in cash were stolen from Lake Forest driveways between June 9 and 21, Lepkowski said. They include a Lexus SUV, Audi SUV, Dodge Challenger and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Three of the vehicles were recovered in Lake Forest and Chicago and were returned to their owners; the suspects are still at large. The fourth vehicle was recovered the night of June 28 and is being held by the Chicago Police Department, which suspects it was used as transportation in a homicide, Lepkowski said. In one incident, a Lake Forest resident’s security camera caught someone attempting to enter his vehicle. Commander Lepkowski explained: “At 4:30 a.m. on June 21, 2016, a Lake Forest resident received a call from his alarm company advising him unknown subjects were seen on his security camera attempting to gain entry into his two cars on his driveway. Luckily, both cars were securely locked and the subjects left the area. However, an unlocked white Lexus with the keys inside was stolen from another location in Lake Forest sometime overnight. On June 14 and 15, Lake Forest experienced three stolen cars and three car burglaries. …” Lepkowski has a theory: “They believe our community is safe and feel comfortable enough to leave their house doors unlocked and their cars unlocked because they don’t think anything is going to happen in our town. A lot of people worldwide have the mentality that it is not going to happen to me, until it does. It is a

testament to how safe they feel in our community but we need the public’s assistance in keeping our community safe by locking things up and not being the victim of a crime of opportunity.” Glencoe: On June 29, Glencoe Police Department stated in a news release that the village “has experienced two auto theft cases and two auto burglaries during the overnight hours. Over the same time period, many of our neighboring communities have seen an increase in similar crimes. Both of the Glencoe stolen vehicles were subsequently recovered on the south side of Chicago, along with stolen vehicles from other communities. Several arrests have been made, and other suspects have been identified. This crime pattern is recurring, and the perpetrators continue to target our area because it contains attractive and accessible vehicles. In particular, a majority of the stolen vehicles were left unlocked with the keys inside by the owners.” Lake Bluff: The night of June 16, a 2013 Porsche Cayenne was stolen from a driveway in the 200 block of Norwich Court. The car was believed to have been left unlocked, said Police Chief David Belmonte. The car was recovered later that evening in the 9000 block of South Merrill in Chicago. “It is believed the theft is related to the same rash of auto thefts and auto burglaries which have occurred along the North Shore,” said Belmonte. “Lake Bluff investigators are working with the other agencies to identify suspects, and residents are reminded to keep vehicles locked at all times, keep valuables out of sight, and keep garage doors closed overnight.”

said she wanted to know how easy it would be for an adult to ascend the towers in case she had to pluck one of her children off the climbing apparatus for older children. “You can get up there pretty easily but it won’t be comfortable,” said Hornig. “You’ll have your children in your eyesight almost all of the time,” he added answering another question from a parent worried about seeing children on the play elements. Though there are slight differences in the play elements at the two parks for younger children, the purpose is the same, according to Hornig. “Sometimes kids that age want to play alone and other times they want to socialize,” Hornig said. “It is set up for imaginary play. They could pretend they are shopping or working in a store.” The play area for 2 to 5 year olds will have small slides at Blair but not at Artesian. Artesian will have a teeter totter for multiple users.

One parent asked how many it was built to accommodate. “It’s for four people,” Hornig said. “It’s not like the old teeter totters where you can raise your sister.” One person in the crowd asked if younger children are prohibited from using the play elements designed for the older youngsters. Hornig said they were not. “Five is an age for both but they’re built for different body

dimensions,” Hornig said. “There should be pretty close parent supervision if your 5-year-old is on the 5 to 12.” Another question asked by several people in the crowd of more than 15 at the Blair Park meeting was about the surface. People wanted to know why the ground would be covered by wood chips rather than a spongier, softer material used in other communities.

A small portion of the Artesian will have the softer surface and none at Blair, said Hornig, who added the cost is three times as much—approximately $72,000— and was not something that could be done with the budget. “If you spent $72,000 on play equipment you would be blown away,” Hornig said. “It would be the best in the country.” Heiser said there was also open space for future expansion.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

Good Greek! Avli Adds Fast-Casual Option BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

WINNETKA — ast, casual dining is all the rage these days and Winnetka’s popular Greek restaurant Avli Estiatorio is taking note. In May it debuted a sister restaurant, Avli Rotisserie, featuring fast-casual Greek rotisserie. “I’m thrilled to bring a Greek rotisserie to the North Shore,” said owner Louie Alexakis. “The new concept is perfect for fans of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine who want a quick and healthy meal. The delicious rotisserie meats will also be used to provide specialty entrées in the full service restaurant and expand our catering capabilities.” Avli is probably one of the North Shore’s best-known secrets, a full-service restaurant located in the back of the Laundry shopping center that puts a fresh spin on traditional Greek food. It’s ideally situated in a storefront that faces Chestnut Street, and Alexakis expects Avli Rotisserie to likely become the face of the main restaurant. Even before opening Avli seven years ago, Alexakis dreamed about opening a rotisserie restaurant, even going so far as to trademark the name “Skewer.” “I had never forgotten what I wanted to do, serve freshly roasted all-natural foods,” he said. And the focal point Avli Rotisserie is certainly just that. Alexakis

imported a large Rotisol rotisserie oven from France, the most popular model in Europe that is also used by the famous foodie destination Eatily in Chicago. The rotisserie sits front and center behind the counter in the freshly rehabbed space, where a variety of savory meat is slowly roasted in each of its eight separate oven

compartments. The menu offers a range of options, including an herb-crusted chicken seasoned with Mediterranean herbs and spices, a pork Porchetta and house made Gyros. Diners can choose between sandwiches on ciabatta bread — made specially for Avli by Hewn bakery in Evanston — or a mini sandwich

on a small pita bread. Anyone looking for something a bit lighter can opt for a salad such as a classic Greek, a shaved apple salad (a modern take on the Waldorf ) or a classic wedge. “We are starting with the right ingredients and we’ll find out what our customers want and we will make it for them,” Alexakis said.

Indeed, the restaurant will feature chicken locally sourced from Harrison’s Poultry of Glenview, grassfed beef and lamb, and Berkshire pork. According to Alexakis, rotisserie is popular all over Greece and is commonly served as street food. Avli Rotisserie will offer a traditional “street style” sandwich

that includes a large pita with meat, veggies and fresh fries all rolled up inside. “The sandwich is your entire meal,” Alexakis said. It’s hard to argue with that. Everything will be made fresh daily and will be available for catered events. While the Avli Rotisserie will boast its own separate kitchen and staff, Alexakis plans to serve some of the rotisserie as specials at the main restaurant. The space itself is clean and modern, with seating for 24 people at quartz-topped tables and counter service. In warmer weather, Alexakis offers outdoor seating. Three large black and white photographs of Iceland are the focal point of one wall, which diners can contemplate as they enjoy their rotisserie. John Vlahakis, owner of neighboring Zia Gallery and a regular customer of Avli Estiatorio, took the pictures. Vlahakis also imports Greek olive oil through his company Earthy Products, which Alexakis will have on offer at the new restaurant. While Alexakis admits that the soul of the restaurant is Greek, he aims to appeal to all people. Diners can choose their own house-made sauce, many of which will not be traditional Greek fare or a salad. “We are trying to appeal to a range of people,” he said. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. For more information go to www.avli.us.

North Shorts Musings by Mike Lubow

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Let’s Talk Real Estate by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner CRS, GRI

THE SELLER’S DISCLOSURE With every listing comes a form called “The Seller’s Disclosure.” This is a form that every seller must fill out and should be included with documentation. It’s a form that tells potential buyers exactly what they’re in for with the house they’re buying. While the disclosure is a great tool, it shouldn’t be your only tool. Ask the seller if they’re willing to have a home inspection done and if any defects are disclosed, that they’ll be willing to make necessary repairs. The good news is a seller’s disclosure will let you know

“Keeping it short”

O

verheard in a Northbrook computer store: Two guys are browsing laptops. One complains to his friend that he wants to write his life story “on one of these” because the kids might like it some day. But, he says, tapping a keyboard, “I am no writer.” The friend replies, “One piece of advice. Keep it short!” This strikes a chord for an eavesdropper who believes in brevity. Their conversation is getting good...

“Just type out some short memories,” the friend says. “Five or six lines, max. (You wonder: is the guy’s name “Max?” Or...) And he goes on. “Think of a cool event. Grab it and just jot it down.” The first guy chuckles, seeming to like the idea. His friend says, “Do it again whenever the spirit moves you. Get a bunch of nonboring snippets from a hard life and put ‘em on a hard drive. They don’t even have to be in order.” “Hmm,” the first guy muses. “Keeping ‘em short’ll make ‘em easy to write and read.”

His buddy replies, “Today, your average human has the attention span of a hummingbird.” Then he adds, “When you get a hundred or so, you’ve got a modern memoir. Unless you’re a reincarnation of James Joyce, keep these things short.” The first guy was asking something about who James Joyce is, but his friend was no longer listening. A large TV on the wall was showing a news headline in a crawl at the screen’s bottom, or maybe it was a sports score. No matter. It was an irresistible attention-getter, nice and short.

about any defects or potential defects in a house. The bad news is that if, after closing, something happens that wasn’t listed on the form, and the seller says they were unaware of it, there’s nothing that can be done. This is why a home inspection is a great thing to invest in—as well as asking the seller to include a home warranty. If “Contingent upon satisfactory home inspection,” it’s written into the contract offered, the buyer is provided with options. With a home warranty secured and in place at the time of closing, both the buyer and the seller are protected, with just a little extra forethought and planning going into the terms of closing. Talk with your Realtor®, they’ll explain all your options! For professional advice from an experienced Realtor, call Jean Wright at (847) 217-1906 or email at jwright@jeanwright.com

INSTANT CLASSIC Prassas, Savarie finish 1-2 in 47th Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

S

itting on the grass with a couple of fellow golfers, a few feet away from the 18th green, Chip Savarie patiently waited as Connor Prassas, Justin Choi and Luke Armbrust wrapped up the third and final round of the 47th Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship at Makray Memorial in Barrington on June 30. Savarie, a good-natured kid with a contagious smile, had himself a front-row seat. He had a birdie-eye view. The Winnetka native, who will be a junior at Loyola Academy, had just birdied the 18th hole to complete his third round with a 70, giving him a 54-hole score of 218. But would it be good enough? As the final group came in, Savarie was sitting pretty — if not comfortably. He knew the score. Everyone who gathered near the 18th green knew the state of this affair. Choi still had a shot — but he needed an eagle. As for Prassas, par would not be enough. The Winnetkan, who teams with Savavie at Loyola, needed at least a birdie to force a playoff. The pressure? It was all on Prassas. Or, was it? “I really don’t know why,” Prassas claimed. “I didn’t feel any pressure on 18. I felt it on the 15, 16 and 17. But not on 18.” But the drama? It was real. Prassas, not one to show his emotions on the course, blocked it all out and calmly sank a downhill seven-foot putt for birdie to force “overtime.” Savarie’s reaction? What else? He smiled. “I just knew he was going to make it,” said Savarie. As he lined up for that crucial putt, Prassas was confident but not cocky. He knew he hit it straight and on line. Still, with that downhill slant, it was tricky. “And, the greens were really fast,” said Prassas, who finished the windy third round with a 76 to tie Savarie’s 218. “If I missed, it [probably] would’ve rolled 15 feet away.” Instead Prassas and Savarie, who

the way the wind was, I knew scores would be higher. But I didn’t think a 76 would even be close to win the tourney.” The 10th and 12th holes especially were trying for the lanky, 6-foot-2 Prassas. “I just had to keep grinding it out,” he said. On 10, Prassas hit his tee shot too far to the right. It landed by some evergreen trees. But instead of taking a penalty — and with Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) director Brett Dreier looking on — Prassas, with half of his body being hugged by tree limbs, managed to hit the ball of the sticky situation. “Just trying to advance it any way I could,” said Prassas, who ended up a bogie on the hole. “I thought [getting a five] was pretty good considering where I was.” On 12, Prassas hit his drive into a hazard under a Weeping Willow tree. “Just a terrible lie,” said Prassas. But once again, Prassas was able to make the best of a tough situation. He punched the ball out of the brush and hit it just in front of an alluring sand trap. He eventually salvaged the hole by going one over. Prassas avoided the rough on 13 and 15. But missing “winnable” shots with his putter was rough on his psyche. “I wanted to snap my putter into [pieces] on 15,” he said. “But I stuck with it.” Speaking of staying with it? Re-enter Savarie. The first two days of this tourney (74-74) was a struggle for him. Heading into Round 3, Savarie was six strokes in back of Prassas. “I went out there today with an open mind,” said Savarie. “I Connor Prassas chips out of a sand trap while playing in the 47th Illinois State Junior Amateur had nothing to lose. “Connor got me there, too,” said Savarie. “Hopefully, next time … “ Notable: Justin Choi, who will be a senior at New Trier, ended up with a 220 (73-71-76) for fourth place. The highlight of his final round was an eagle on 15. He closed out the hole with a 12-foot putt. “I had a good drive. Everything about that hole went well for me,” said Choi. “I was able to play it perfectly.” Northfield’s Choi, a big-meet competitor, opened Day Three with a tough front nine (41). He rallied on the back nine (35) to give himself a shot for the title. “I started off badly today,” said Choi, who earned all-state honors (tied for ninth) at the IHSA state meet last year after being the medalist at the New Trier Regional. “I missed two shots that I shouldn’t have missed. “But I was able to keep it together and get things right,” he added. Choi was the runner-up at two Mid-American Junior Golf Tour (MAJGT) tournaments earlier this year. He shot a 141 (72-69) at the North Shore Open at Wilmette Golf Course on April 16-17. And he carded a 151 (79-72) at the Shepherd’s Crook Open on May 7-8. Winnetka’s William Nummy (class of 2018) placed 11th at Makray with a 228 (76-75-77). Michael Tanaka (class of 2018) of Wilmette shot a 230 to finish in a tie for 18th, while Winnetka’s Reb Banas (class of 2017) came in tied for 24th (231). Meanwhile, with Connor Prassas and Chip Savarie as a 1-2 punch, Loyola Academy is in good shape heading into in the 2016-17 high school campaign. Other featured players include Jack McGuire (class of 2017) and John Kryscio (class of 2018). According to Prassas, Wilmette’s Bennett Cotten, who played golf for LA as a freshman during the 2014-15 school year (5th in the state meet), is attending the Gilchrist Golf Academy in Florida.

New Trier’s Brecht named to IHSBCA all-state team; Gould, Hall, Woodrow off to fast starts in pro baseball BY KEVIN REITERMAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

P

utting Big Ben on the list had to be a no-brainer. New Trier fireballer Ben Brecht, the Player of the Year in the Central Suburban League, was named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) 2016 Class 4A AllState Baseball Team. He was the lone player from The North Shore Weekend area to earn the honor. The 6-foot-7 left-hander, who was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 36th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 11, finished the spring campaign with a 10-0 record in 12 starts. His earned run average was a sparling 0.55. He finished with 97 strikeouts in 63 innings. Brecht, ranked as the No. 1 senior pitcher in Illinois by the Prep Baseball Report (PBR), throw his fastball in the low 90s. He will play his college baseball at UC Santa Barbara.

Daria Pyshnenko: The rising senior at Lake Forest High School, turned in solid work at the Trials. She ended up with the 21st fastest time in the 50-yard free prelims (25.60) on July 2. She entered the event ranked 39th (25.68). Ingrid Wall: Like Pyshnenko, Wall, who swims for the New Trier Swim Club, did better than her ranking (111th) in the 50 free. Wall placed 99th in 26.34. Jack Mangan: A two-time All-American and Big Ten champion in the 800 freestyle relay for the University of Michigan, Mangan qualified to the Trials in three events: 100 back, 100 free and 200 back. At the Trials, the New Trier graduate was timed in 56.73 in the 100 back (72nd) and 51.33 in the 100 free (77th). His best effort came on June 30, when he placed 51st in the 200 back (2:03.35). Riley Hayward: The Winnetka native, who swims for USC, made it to the Trials in the 200 breaststroke. The New Trier Swim Club alum finished 81st in 2:36.02.

CIRCLING THE BASES| AT THE PRO LEVEL

Charlie Gould: The Lake Forest High School product is off to a terrific start in pro baseball. The third baseman, selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 26th round of the 2016 MLB June Free Agent draft, is hitting .375 with two doubles and eight RBIs in the rookie Arizona League. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Gould, a celebrated player at William & Mary, already has four multi-hit games. His best outing came on June 23, when he had two hits and four RBIs against the AZL Giants. His on-base percentage is .450. His OPS (onbase plus slugging) is .888.

save on June 29. Hall, a Winnetka resident, is a converted catcher. He made the transition to the pitcher’s mound during his sophomore season at Elon University in 2015.

Danny Woodrow: The early numbers are very good for the ex-Loyola Academy standout. SPORTS

HITTING ALL OF THE RIGHT NOTES Multi-talented Edington performed at a high level during New Trier’s state title run BY DAN SHALIN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

W

hile performing in musical theater, recent New Trier graduate Flower Edington lived by the mantra “the show must go on,” regardless of missed cues, flubbed lines or off-key notes. On the soccer field, the show also goes on. However, if, like Edington in the last few months, you suffer a broken arm, require staples in your head to close a wound or are experiencing dizziness after colliding with a teammate, you don’t necessarily go on with it. “That’s the stuff [injuries] I have to accept, if I’m trying to put myself out there and win the ball out of the air,” said Edingon, whose given name is Hana, Japanese for Flower, a longtime nickname she fully adopted in middle school. Flower’s mother Tomo is Japanese. Edington’s game, full of athleticism, energy, grit, craftiness and intelligence, was an important component in New Trier’s success this past spring, as the Trevians captured a third straight Class 3A state title with a 4-0 win over Collinsville on June 4. “When I watch [Edington] do her moves up the field … she even fools me,” New Trier junior defender Sam Urban said. “Her hard work is noticed by coaches, players and fans. My younger sister [who is in seventh grade] once told me Flower was her favorite player.” The versatile Edington was usually the first Trevian off the bench, often playing midfield, but also playing up top and occasionally in the back. She finished the season with three goals and one assist, and had six goals and five assists in her two-year varsity career. But New Trier head coach Jim Burnside said Edington’s impact went well beyond stats. “She was a wildcard for us, a difference maker in the playoff run and for the entire [2016] season,” Burnside said. “She’s a jack of all trades, and I would say master of all of those. “She understands the game and is usually in the right place at the right time, getting to spots as the

play is developing rather than just reacting.” He continued: “[Edington] is so dependable. Two years ago, I didn’t think I would be saying these things. It’s a true credit to what she’s invested in this program and in her soccer abilities over the last two years.”

Shortly after Edington’s sophomore season, she and Burnside sat down for a discussion about her soccer career and goals. A member of the school’s musical theater department, Edington was performing in musicals and trying to keep up with club and high school soccer commitments.

Burnside said he appreciated and admired Edington’s musical talent, but he did not believe balancing both activities would allow her to maximize her obvious potential on the soccer field. He described the meeting as an adult discussion rather than an ultimatum.

Edington told Burnside she was “fully checked-in” to the team and the sport. She still performed in the school’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof ” as a junior. But prior to her senior year, she joined FC United, one of the area’s top girl’s soccer clubs, though her fall season was cut short by a broken arm. She

also decided to skip this year’s musical. While some local high school soccer programs might bend over backward to allow a player of Edington’s talent to do theater and sports, New Trier isn’t just any program. “If I had to choose between this program and another program where I could do that, I would choose this program, hands down,” Edington said. “I’d rather be on this strong team than be in a mediocre soccer program. I was willing to give up that [musical theater] side to be part of this program.” Edington’s increased commitment to the sport included exploring her collegiate soccer options. Last summer, she caught the eye of Illinois Wesleyan coaches during an ID camp at the Bloomington school. Shortly thereafter she agreed to play for the Division III Titans. On the field, Edington improved several skills, including her ability to head the ball. After the graduation of New Trier’s talented forward Maggie Armstrong in 2015, Burnside was looking for players who could win aerial battles at both ends of the field. So, the 5-foot-5 Edington made herself a threat in the air. Unfortunately, doing so also led to a few collisions, one of which resulted in a lot of blood and an early end to Edington’s Senior Night game on May 9, another to dizziness and a premature end to her state championship game. Also on Senior Night, Edington’s two worlds collided when she surprised her teammates by singing the National Anthem before the game. “It was cool knowing that it wasn’t going to be all the theater and choir kids, that it was my own teammates and lot of them haven’t heard me sing for real. They’ve heard me on the bus, but not in a performance kind of way,” Edington said. “It was amazing to be able to bring out that side of me. I really loved that experience.”

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Late Night’s Unsung Hero BY JAKE TAYLOR ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

I

n the world of late-night talk show hosts, there are few names bigger than David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, or Jimmy Fallon. For more than three decades, this talkative triumvirate ruled the scene as the successive frontmen for NBC’s supremely popular Late Night franchise. When Fallon eventually departed for the bright lights of The Tonight Show, what remained in his wake were, at least in talk show terms, some monumentally large shoes, just waiting for a suitable sort to fill them. That chosen man was Seth Meyers, one-time head writer of the flagship sketch show Saturday Night Live (SNL) and the heir apparent to a showbiz kingdom that demanded nothing less than success. Meyers took over hosting duties in 2014 and has never looked back. Meyers was born at Evanston Hospital, and even though he spent most of his formative years in New England, before graduating to the world famous hustle and bustle of New York, he’s never forgotten the city of his birth. “Evanston still has a really special place in my life, even where I am now,” he told The Daily Northwestern in 2011. “The people that I met there have really helped me get to this point.” In June, Meyers gave the Northwestern University commencement address and received an honorary degree from his alma mater. And recently, he was quick to bestow the virtues of his home city when asked about how ambitious people are the United States. “You know, ambition exists everywhere, and on every street corner. I think there’s a different way people go about it. Perhaps in the bigger cities it’s more cutthroat, more ruthless. “I think in Evanston there’s a respectful nod to others trying to get on the ladder. I’m not suggesting people are offering others a place in the queue before them, but striving for recognition isn’t quite so driven at the expense of everything else, and that’s really special.” Illinois often goes uncredited as a state where many of America’s great comedic talents began their lives and careers, and has long provided a fertile hunting ground for Lorne Michaels and his team

in the search for the next big thing on Saturday Night Live. Evanston, in particular, can claim SNL alumni Bill Murray, Joan Cusack, and Tim Kazurinsky as its own, and many more of the nation’s most famous comedians are affiliated with the nearby Windy City. “I moved to New York in 2001,” Meyers explained in an interview alongside long-time friend and former SNL collaborator Amy Poelher, “and the crazy thing about that was the people I watched perform in Chicago— you [Poelher], Horatio Sanz, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch—it was weird to move to New York and be most excited about being colleagues with people I knew from Chicago.” For Meyers, the theater bug bit when he returned to his hometown of Evanston when he attended Northwestern University. “When I first came to school, I pretty much had no plans at all,” he says. “I was initially a radio, TV, and film major and thought that I wanted to be behind the camera, but then I ended up falling in love with improv. I would go downtown and take classes at Improv Olympic, and once I got started, I knew it would be silly for me to be behind the camera when I found I loved performing so much.” Fortunately for Meyers, the perfect vehicle for honing his theatrical urges was waiting for him at Northwestern— The Mee-Ow Show, which he told NBC in 2009 was “absolutely the reason I am in comedy today.” The troupe first took to the stage in 1974, and has since become a staple for the university’s theater and comedy scene. In joining Mee-Ow, the young Meyers could count SNL stars such as Ana Gasteyer and Seinfeld’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus amongst his predecessors. “It was so much fun,” reminisces Meyers. “The guys that did it the years before me were sort of my heroes and I didn’t think I would get a chance to be in the

show, but then I joined, and the year I did it was amazing. Being on stage in front of people— well, it was like a drug. That sort of sold it for me, and I knew it was what I wanted to keep doing.” While he would go on to perform in the various skits and sketches that made SNL a household name—most notably as the co-anchor to Poelher in the “Weekend Update” segment in a prophetic pastiche of his future

role as the Late Night host—it was in a supporting role that enabled Meyers to eventually make his mark. While he has been known to tackle impersonations from time to time, Meyers told Vogue that the start of his SNL career was mired by a sense that “a terrible mistake had been made” and he was unfit to call his fellow comedic co-workers equals. Fast forward just four years, and Meyers was being appointed

co-head writer of the show with Anthony Steele and Tina Fey—a position he went on to hold single-handedly after Fey’s departure in 2006, and which set the groundwork for his career as a hugely successful comedy writer. For him, the pen was as mighty as the sketch. “I’m grateful for that. I can be under the bleachers with Lorne [Michaels] while someone else says something I wrote and feel exactly as good as I could have felt if I was out there saying it.” This is the man who was behind the Sarah Palin sketch that marked Fey’s hugely successful return to the show, the writer who would go on to be the second longest serving member of the SNL cast in its history. Despite accepting his acting shortcomings, the ensemble nature of SNL allowed Meyers to excel behind the camera after all. “One of the great things a b o u t working at SNL is that you’re surrounded by people with all these different talents. I did have those dreams and then, you know, people like A n d y [Samberg], Bill [Hader], and Jason [Sudeikis] showed up and they started doing their thing. And I started thinking, ‘Oh, these guys are better actors than I am.’ When this show came up, I said, ‘Okay, this is the kind of job that I think I could do.’” Recently, Meyers has begun to develop a reputation for more indepth political patter, leading to some areas of the media comparing him to the now-retired Jon Stewart of The Daily Show fame. Having said that, the decision to swap the traditional standing monologue that opened the show to a format that saw Meyers seated at a desk in an echo of his former stint with Poelher on SNL, coin-

cided with Stewart’s decision to hand over the reins of The Daily Show in 2015. “The longer we’ve done this show, the more we’ve tried to focus on politics,” Meyers says. “Certainly, as we enter an election year, politics is going to provide more for us to talk about. The timing is more coincidence… but again, I sat for a long time at my last job. It’s not like this is something I’m doing for the first time. It was nice yesterday. When you do something new you feel some nerves, but once I started doing it, it was muscle memory reminding me that it had been my delivery system of choice for a very long time.” The “stuff that does best” on Late Night, Meyers adds, “always has a point of view” – something more commonly associated to the style encapsulated by Cronkite, Letterman, and Stewart. “The audience respects knowing what hosts believe. They’re not looking for someone who’s inscrutable or a puzzle, so we’re happy to let people know when we’re upset or angry about something or feel passionately one way or the other. That always seems to play better, and that is one of the many legacies of The Daily Show. One thing you worry about is if somebody who’s in line with your politics makes you angry, you don’t ignore it because it’s in line with your politics. You also talk about it. You just don’t want to let anybody off scot-free.” Meyer’s turn as the face of Late Night is going steady, with an average audience last year of 1.5 million. Like Meyer’s SNL career, his talk show tenure has blossomed with time, quietly establishing itself in his own image as a man who is undeniably talented and seemingly devoid of ego. Following talk show stalwarts like Letterman, Conan, and Fallon is a daunting enough task and, two years in, Meyers is doing much more than just keeping his head above water—he’s looking forward to many more years to come. Talk show hosting is a career defining profession—as Lorne Michaels once told Meyers, “there’s no job after it” —but to return to the initial point, although Meyers is angling to cement his place in a bona fide American tradition, he’ll still always be an Evanston boy at heart.
