Market Square Improvements Progressing

Dining Al Fresco on the North Shore BY BILL MCLEAN

A

couple of Highland Park residents walk to Abigail’s American Bistro, located in the Ravinia District, and decide to eat al fresco. Why not? It’s 75 degrees, slightly breezy, with a zero percent chance of rain. They sit. They glance at the menu. They hear music. But the tune is not coming from the inside of the restaurant. The band playing at Ravinia Festival can be heard along Roger Williams Avenue. Free water. Free entertainment tonight, too. Bonus. Diners sitting outside in the cozy patio area at Merlo’s, also located on Roger Williams Avenue, also get to enjoy the live music tonight. A conversation at a table halts. Feet begin to tap. “Eating outside here can be an extension of the Ravinia experience,” John Merlo, owner of Merlo’s, says. “Chicago weather is usually harsh, either too cold or too hot. When you’re able to eat outside, when the weather is ideal, you almost feel like you’re cheating the system.”

LAKE FOREST— arket Square’s new courtyard has encountered construction delays and likely won’t be complete until the fall. Also, Starbucks’s move from Bank Lane to Western Avenue also has hit a snag and likely will not open in its new spot until August. Market Square owner L3 Capital announced plans in February to build a new terrace on the north side of the shopping area. It will have one entrance between Forest Bootery and Sweet Pete’s and another off Bank Lane near the post office to provide more outdoor space for people to eat or just gather. Michael Schreiber, an L3 principal, said at the time it would open by June 1. He now estimates an autumn start. Much of the initial work on the terrace requires utility companies to relocate power lines or other connections, according to Schreiber.

“I ended with a cheer [spelling “Scouts,” the LFHS mascot] and that was nerve-racking because everybody was joking that they wouldn’t respond ‘UTS!’ when I said ‘SCO!’” Stern says. “But they did, so it was great.” Between the demands of practicing with the Pom/Dance team and the hours she put toward the efforts of student council, Stern is a big believer of getting involved in all that high school has to offer. “Applying for college especially, they love seeing that you’re involved,” Stern says. “I know people have always freaked out about ACT scores and taking hard classes, but really, getting involved in a lot of different types of things helped me get into college. And you learn from each of those different experiences.” Next year, Stern will be attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she’ll enter the College of Letters and Sciences studying Communications.

People like the smell of fresh air, especially after the long winters in Chicago.” Robert LaPata calls Chicagoland weather “a fickle beast.”The co-partner of Ten Mile House in Evanston knows it can be tee-shirt-and-shorts weather in March and parka weather in June in some years. He also knows the scenery around his restaurant’s al fresco spot (eight-10 tables, 36 seats) enhances the dining experience. “We offer an urban setting on the North Shore for those who enjoy eating outside,” LaPata says. “Our location [Central Street, a couple of punts distance from Northwestern University’s Ryan Field] sits near a very busy street, similar to a street in Chicago. People drive by and see our customers sitting under table umbrellas. Our customers wave to the drivers. It’s vibrant outdoors, exciting.” The summer scene at Bridie McKenna’s in Highwood was inactive for 20 months, beginning in late 2014. Jim Stoecker and his business partner, Steve Saks, bought the Irish pub and restaurant off Green Bay Road, renamed it Ginger’s and opened it on July 1. Stoecker also owns Alex’s Washington Gardens, a restaurant next door to Ginger’s. Unlike many of the other restaurants along Green Bay Road in Highwood, the al fresco section at Ginger’s does not take up sidewalk space; it borders a side of the building, and it’s an expansive layout, roomy enough for 76 patrons. “It takes you back to when you were a kid at a picnic,” Stoecker “When people call asking for office space they ask if it is Class A and if it has an elevator,” Schreiber said. “We’re going to be able to offer that to people.” The office space is part of a plan to make Market Square sustainable for the next 100 years, according to Schreiber. The shopping area is celebrating its first century this year. In other developments in the shopping area, The Daily Grind butcher shop opened July 2 and Schreiber said he is applying close scrutiny to any potential retailers who may move into the space formerly occupied by the Lake Forest Book Store. “That’s a prime spot on the corner next to the new Starbucks,” Schreiber said. “We want the right fit. says of an appeal of outdoor dining. “You don’t hear the clatter of dishes you normally hear inside. There’s also more of a communal feel outside, people more willing to talk, table to table, than if they were inside.” It is a recent Friday evening, not too cold and not too hot, at Ginger’s. Chris and Peggy McNulty, a married couple from Highwood, are big fans of dining al fresco. They strike up a friendly conversation with a pair of strangers sitting nearby, one holding a pen, the other a camera. “Fresh air,” Chris, formerly of Northbrook, says. “That’s a big one, a major reason we’re out here tonight.” “In the Chicago area,” his wife

adds, “we grasp at the few days we have to eat outside in pleasant weather. We love the ambience at Froggy’s [in Highwood], too. Its patio bar [the Greenhouse], with the brick wall, the greenery … it’s beautiful. It’s like you’re eating in a garden.” It is always a good feeling, that sensation of being transported to an entirely different culture before taking that first sip, that first bite at a restaurant. Settle in at Ginger’s, and you’re a Dubliner for a meal. Take in the atmosphere at Froggy’s, and you hear yourself saying “oui” more often than you hear yourself saying “yes.” Disotto in Highwood, off Green Bay Road, opened in March. “Disotto” means

“underneath” in Italian. The lower-level dining room of the restaurant resembles a wine cellar. About 90 percent of the patio area (for 30 customers, no reservations required) at the front of the eatery is covered, providing respite for patrons on those nights when the temperatures hit the 90s. “The vibe outside is a great one, like it is in our dining areas inside,” Disotto managing partner Edgar Lincoln says. “There is a little more privacy outside. It’s quieter. The plants we put there absorb a lot of the heat. There’s that feeling you’re eating in your own back yard. “Here, though, you don’t have to cook or clean.”

Wilmette OKs Imperial Motors’ Renovation BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM

WILMETTE— mperial Motors won’t be forced to leave Wilmette now that it has received unanimous approval from the Village Board for an extensive facelift to its building. The board’s July 12 decision overturned a negative recommendation from the Appearance Review Board. To create a uniform image for all its dealerships worldwide, Jaguar Land Rover LLC is requiring all franchisees to have a distinct building aligned with the brand. “It’s a very big trend in the car industry that if you are a franchisee you have to have the corporate image the franchisor requires,” Jordan Aron, son of founder Allen Aron, told DailyNorthShore.com. Imperial Motors is a family owned Jaguar dealership that has been selling cars at its location on Green Bay Road since 1953. Its Tudor-style building, located on the 700 block of Green Bay Road between Washington and Central

avenues, is a conglomeration of seven buildings that were acquired and remodeled over time as the business grew. Allen Aron’s philosophy since founding the business is to constantly improve. “We are good guardians of the 700 block,” he said. But this time it wasn’t Allen Aron who wanted to improve the building. It was under specific direction from Jaguar Land Rover that Imperial Motors sought approval of the design from the village. According to their franchise agreement with Jaguar Land Rover, Imperial Motors is required to make a considerable investment and redesign its building following Jaguar Land Rover’s stringent requirements. Not only is the architectural design dictated by Jaguar Land Rover, but also every detail from color, fixtures and materials used, Jordan Aron said. The new plan includes a contemporary design with clean lines and a modern facade with lots of light and large windows. At the village board meeting,

Musings by Mike Lubow

“The Boomerang Effect”

Y

ou’re at the beach around here, and it’s postcard perfect. They don’t call the North Shore a “shore” for nothing. A guy’s playing with his dog in the surf, and they’re having a ball. Dog’s emotions have a “boomerang effect.” They circle back to you. When your dog’s happy, you are, too. You muse

about this, remembering it’s not always that simple... A few years ago you took your young dog to this same North Shore beach to show her some fun and have it boomerang back to you. She hesitated to enter the water, so you gently carried her in, saying “you’re gonna love this.” She was a retriever, a breed born to enjoy swimming. Standing in clear Lake

Michigan up to your chest, you held her, letting her feel the buoyant waves, a taste of fun to come. Then you eased her in so she could enjoy her first dogpaddle. She dropped like a rock. What about the inborn canine instinct for swimming? Don’t count on it! You quickly dove under to grab her. She came up coughing, sputtering, climbing onto you in a no-fun mood. Back at the beach

$19.95 Soup du Jour or Salad Maison ChoiCe of Sautéed Lake Superior Whitefish Almandine or Classic Steak au Poivre or Chicken Casserole Basquaise or Fresh Pasta, Seafood Lobster Sauce

she shook herself and looked up, saying with big eyes: “Why’d you do that to me?” All you’d wanted was to show her a good time. She went on to live a long, contented life on dry land, never interested in going back into the water. You were fine with that. Seems the connection we have with dogs goes beyond just feeling their fun. All their moods can boomerang back at you.

BAXTER TRAVELS: John Baxter, a crew boss/strategist, will sail the “Mac” for the 30th time this weekend.

NO SAILS PITCH NEEDED Historic ‘Mac’ race has been drawing devoted sailors for more than a century BY BILL MCLEAN, SPORTS@NORTHSHOREWEEKEND.COM

T

The father could not wait to get off the boat. The son could not wait to get on it. This was an annual Two Family Members Passing in the Night (or Day) following the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. The father was Mark Baxter.

The son, starting at the age of five, maybe six, was John Baxter. “My mom [Kay] and I would head up to Mackinac Island [in Michigan] and wait for my father to finish the [333-mile] race,” John Baxter, now 46 and a resident of Northfield, recalls. “As soon as I could, I would get on

that boat and sleep. That’s one of my early memories of the race.” John Baxter will get on a boat again this weekend, this time for the start ( July 23) of the “Mac”, the 108th edition. It will be his 30th “Mac”. He is the crew boss/ strategist of a Nelson Marek (NM, for short) 68, slotted in

Section 1, one of 23 sections in the longest annual freshwater distance race in the world. Baxter has other stories to tell. So do several other sailors with North Shore ties.

THE SAIL MAKER

John Baxter owns Doyle

Sailmakers Midwest, based in Chicago. He grew up in Kenilworth and landed his first sailing job in Florida, as a seventh grader, after his family moved to The Sunshine State when he was eight. His sail shop boss back then made Baxter take the trash out and sweep the floor. The job

had a perk. “I got to play around with sails,” he says. “My boss, all those years ago … we’re good friends now.” Baxter has sailed competitively all over the world: Australia, Europe, the Caribbean, “sort of all over,” says the father of three

RIGGED FOR SUCCESS: Joseph Haas is a former Chicago Yacht Club Commodore. He’s slated for his 10th “Mac” race. He’ll be a crew member on Infinite Diversion. His Cruising Section vessel won the triple bullet in 2013.

I learn how to communicate better with my crew, how to do things more efficiently. I pick up things. So many little tricks.” The NM68, on which he’ll race this weekend, topped its section at the “Mac” last summer. The performance pleased Baxter — and stunned him. “Shocking,” he says. “The boat was an interesting project. It was built in 1985 or ’86. It had been to Hawaii a few times, undergone a major refit. It made its way to the Great Lakes a few years ago.”

Baxter was a member of an overall “Mac” championship crew in the late 1990s. The field numbered around 300 boats then. He figures he has been a part of 11 other “Mac” section title efforts. “The hardest part of the ‘Mac’?” he says. “Probably at around 2-5 a.m. You’re racing 35-45 hours nonstop, depending on the conditions, and at that time in the morning, you’re tired and usually cold or wet or both.” A “Mac” trophy is named after his grandfather, and another “Mac” prize is named after his godfather. Baxter’s late mom, Kay, served as a Chicago Yacht Club race committee member for 50 years.

The Master Mariner, who died in June, entered the “Mac” 66 times, capturing the overall title in 2011 — at the age of 80. His Turbo entrant, Windancer, clocked a time of 36 hours, 25 minutes and 26 seconds. “I was crewing for him when I met my future wife,” Gustman, who grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, says. “He was incredibly calm, fearless.” Gustman’s boat, Northstar, a J109 “Mac” entrant, finished first in its section and fifth overall in 2014, two years after finishing second in its section and fifth overall. Two of his 2016 crew members are sons Hunter, a Utah resident who turns 28 on July 23 (“Mac” Race Day), and David,

Matthews was eight, all alone on a Sunfish sailboat, when he experienced a baptism by fire on a body of water. His older brother, Curt Jr., had shoved the sailboat toward open water. The startled little brother had never navigated a boat all by himself. “My brother yelled, ‘Figure it out,’ ” Rob recalls. The Sunfish and Rob returned to shore. At the same time, thankfully. He had figured it out. Northstar’s lone female crew member this weekend? In the opening game of the tournament, a 117-32 win over Guatemala on July 13, Boehm played 18 minutes and just missed a double-double (10 points, 9 rebounds). SUNDAY BREAKFAST

All in against Alzheimer’s

BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

C

heryl Levin-Folio received the phone call on a Friday afternoon nearly four years ago. A neurologist had some news for Cheryl and her husband, Michael Folio, 56 at the time. Tough news. Michael had earlyonset Alzheimer’s. Michael and Cheryl had been married for a grand total of four months. “I cried when I got off the phone,” Cheryl, now 56, recalls. “We had plans to go out with friends that night, so I didn’t tell him.” She told him two days later, on a Sunday morning. One of Michael’s first reactions in front of his wife was, “You didn’t sign up for this when we got married.” Cheryl’s quick reply: “We’ve never run away from anything; we’re not going to run away from this.” Michael, nearing his 60th birthday, and Cheryl order breakfast on a July morning at Country Kitchen in Highland Park, their hometown. Michael’s Alzheimer’s is in the moderateto-severe stage. We’re at a table near the front window of the restaurant. It’s warm outside. It’s bright and sunny inside, thanks mostly to the expressions of Michael and Cheryl. Michael sports a contagious smile and a perma-twinkle in each eye. Cheryl, animated and wide-eyed, has much to say and can’t wait to share it. They are here to tell a love story. “I met Michael 15 years ago, and he became my mentor [in the real estate industry],” Cheryl says. “I had tremendous respect

for him before I fell in love with him. We are truly friends. He continues to make me laugh. “My husband has always had a personal philosophy regarding the handling of a challenging situation: ‘You have one day, only one day, to be sad or angry or frustrated a b o u t something.’ It’s the day you get to cry, feel depressed, express any emotion you need to express. The next day you put a plan in place.” Cheryl’s plan, the day after that call from the neurologist: learn everything there is about Alzheimer’s. “I went to a bookstore and bought every Alzheimer’s book,” she says, in between bites of an avocado and spinach omelet. “You know what? I couldn’t find any book about what a young person with Alzheimer’s should do to keep the mind stimulated, to slow the progress of Alzheimer’s. We wanted some type of guidance on how someone with Alzheimer’s can live well, and long, after the diagnosis.” Cheryl, a University of Arizona graduate with a degree in psychology, contacted experts across the country and learned more about a disease that was

Cheryl Levin-Folio

discovered in 1906. (Five million Americans today have Alzheimer’s, and an estimated 500,000 will be diagnosed with it this year; only four percent of Alzheimer’s patients are younger than 65.) She parked herself in front of a computer and searched for information she had not gathered in books. The Lincolnwood native and Niles West High School graduate

clicked, clicked, clicked. She read, read, read. The woman who had sought experts became an expert. Early this fall, Cheryl LevinFolio will become a selfpublished author with the launch of The 24-Hour Rule: Living with Alzheimer’s (to be available at amazon.com). “Our hope is the book will be a rich resource for newly

diagnosed patients and a helpful, how-toguide for family members, ne w caregivers and friends who want and need to understand the illness,” C h e r y l writes on the c o u p l e ’s touching website, alzheimerseverydayliving.com. “On every page are practical strategies you can implement at home, away from where you live, at friends’ houses, just about anywhere.” Every morning Michael and Cheryl nestle on a couch at home and view a 22minute memor y montage video. There’s Michael as a young baseball player. There’s one cousin, then another, wishing Michael a Happy Birthday. There’s footage of Michael and Cheryl’s wedding. Michael spends time with a buddy, Lee, three times a week. They work out together, bike together, play tennis and golf together. Alzheimer’s wasn’t a death sentence. More like a let’stackle-this challenge. Now. And hard. And daily. Michael reads sweet reminders from Cheryl before he gets ready to face each day. “Brush your pearly whites,” the list begins. “Put on your

cologne. Dress cute.” She does not sign her name at the bottom of the sheet. She pens three words instead: “I love you.” Wednesdays are art therapy days for Michael, Fridays music therapy days. Michael plays the drums on Fridays. “His verbal abilities get stronger after his music therapy sessions,” Cheryl says, adding her husband is also a participant in a clinical trial conducted by the University of South Florida Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute in Tampa, Florida. “Routine enhances our life and our environment. Routine is good. Structure is good. Interfering a routine, I learned, allows the illness to take control. “Our message to people with Alzheimer’s and those who know them and care for them is, ‘Don’t be afraid of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.’ There’s no need to hide it, either. At first I was scared, yes, because I didn’t want to lose a strength in my life, the man who brings out the best in me. We made the decision to fight this, and that’s what we’ve been doing.” The husband and wife sometimes play tennis. The wife smacks a ball to her husband’s forehand. It comes back. The wife smacks a ball to her husband’s backhand. It comes back. The rally continues, Cheryl looking for an opportunity to end the point, Michael looking to extend it. “He gets everything back,” Cheryl says. “It’s annoying.” Cheryl turns to her right and looks right at Michael. She squeezes his left hand. They grin at the same time. Combatants in tennis, teammates vs. Alzheimer’s.
